When I think about my evolution, I think of my mother; she has been the force of womanhood through my entire life, and I cannot thank her enough for all the sacrifices she made for us to exist as we exist today. I also credit pioneers like Grace Jones, Erykah Badu, and Kelis, who have done the work and shared a wealth of information. Merely existing every day as a black woman in this country is a form of activism. Cardi B is an activist; she’s my feminist icon.

How important is the fashion side of your music? I think that visual art in all aspects is super important to me, whether it be throughout the creation of my videos or my album artwork. Creating strong visual representation of not only myself but, again, black women, and getting to see us as avant-garde beings in a world that sometimes puts us in a box is really important to me.

I remember having so much perspective about my voice, and how to use my voice, at such a young age—whether it was through dance, poetry, or coming up with different projects. I guess I always felt a yearning to communicate—I had a lot of things to say. And I appreciated y'all's patience in the house during all of these different phases. They were not ever very introverted, quiet phases.
