Frankenstein My AR-15 Please!!!
We live in a world of seamlessly endless options when it comes to our firearms. Particularly the AR-15 platform where just about every major firearms company except for a few like Glock and Beretta have jumped into the AR-15 weapon platform with their own variant of the most popular rifle in the U.S. and maybe even the world next to the AK-47. Many people and I’ve been quality of this as well, demand that all of the associated parts be that from the same manufacturer when assembling their AR-15 rifle. Some people feel that it provides better worth in the long run, better matching components or even a better functioning rifle. But I am here to tell you that not every manufacturer has the best of every single part. So dare I say it, give me that Frankenstein AR-15 rifle!
Tumblr media
When people look into assembling an AR-15 rifle, they will look towards Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, Geissele, SOLGW and Aero Precision to name a few of the available manufacturers over at Brownells. Some of these manufacturers are known more for some of their individual parts rather than the rifle in it’s entirety. Case in point would be Geissele. Long before Geissele started producing their own complete AR-15 rifles, their claim to fame was their triggers and their rails. Geissele has some of the crispiest triggers in the game, with a pull weight, single or 2 stage and reset for pretty much any trigger discipline there is. Their rails are know to be bomb proof without the fear of rotating under extreme stress. Aero Precision on the other hand has been know for their unique M4E1 receiver sets that have the look of a billet aluminum receiver, but without the billet price. In previous years they were know for solid receiver sets at a budget price point. Little know fact, but many OEM receivers are produced by Aero Precision for other companies.
Tumblr media
So what reason would you want to Frankenstein your AR-15 build? You can draw from the strengths of the companies above and put together the best of the best! A number of the builds I’ve completed for myself and others, I’ve done just that. Using a trigger assembly from Geissele, installed on an Aero Precision receiver set with a SOLGW lower parts kit and rail and barrel assembly from Daniel Defense. Charging handle and furniture set from Bravo Company. And iron sights from another company such as Troy or Midwest Industries.
Tumblr media
A Frankenstein AR-15 rifle isn’t just a rifle with a bunch of different parts thrown together, but rather a specific taste and desire in the end result and performance. So long as the parts are good quality parts that are within spec, you should have a great functioning rifle that’s as good or better than a factory built or home built rifle using all parts from a single manufacturer. And at the end of the day, it meets your specifications and demand for the AR-15 rifle that you’re assembling. I believe the days of looking down on an AR-15 rifle that’s not factory assembled or all from a single manufacturer are long gone. So bring on that Frankenstein AR-15!

Thoughts on SOLGW rifles?
Son’s makes a pretty solid gun. Only issue I’ve ever had with one was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen with an AR. The buffer spring rusted so much that it broke.

AR-15…Do You Really Get what You Pay For?
Having been tinkering with the AR-15 rifle platform for almost 2 decades now, one question I constantly get asked by people that are new to the platform is whether it is worth it to spend so much money on an AR-15 rifle? Do you really get what you pay for? My question back to them has always been what is your budget? As most all of us question what we’re willing to spend on an item, this has always been my first question. My second question is what is important to you? For example, what is the purpose of the firearm? How would you like it setup as far as optics, handguard, trigger and sights? Many people truly have no idea what they want, so I typically will show them some of my rifle setups and gauge their interest in one direction or another. Most people I deal with appreciate this approach and it truly helps them understand some of the different configurations and can help them make up their mind.
Now back to the question of do you really get what you pay for. This is probably one of the most debated subjects when it comes to anything that’s tangible, we value and spend our hard earned cash on. The AR-15 firearm platform has such a wide range in prices in today’s world, starting from the $300-$500 price range all the way up to $4k-$5k. So do you really get $4k worth of performance out of an AR-15 costing $4K and do you really only get $500 worth of performance out of a $500 AR-15? In my opinion, that answer is truly found somewhere in the $1k-$2k range. You do get a lot for your money in that specific price slot. Think of a lot of the mid to upper tier rifles offered by BCM, SOLGW, DD and Geissele over at Brownells. All of these rifles come generally with a good trigger, hard use barrel/BCG and nice handguard/furniture. Now this isn’t to say that you get so much less with that $500 AR-15. They are very good starting points to figure out what’s ultimately important to you. Lower end rifles from S&W, Stag Arms and Aero Precision can be good values too, you just don’t get some of the added benefits of a nicer trigger, hard use barrel and sometimes the furniture is lower end on the quality or materials used.
Tumblr media
So my experience has been all over this price spectrum. I have higher end rifles from Noveske and Geissele as well as some lower end rifles from PSA, RRA, Spike’s Tactical and Aero Precision. My experience with the lower end rifles have been, they usually get parts swapped out to bring them up in status. Whereas the higher end rifles are perfectly fine in their “as purchased” setup. This of course is one’s personal preference and is another one of the beauties of the AR-15 platform is the ease of changing out most common parts to improve or enhance the firearm.
So at the end of the day, it’s all up to you and your wallet. But I will add that outside of the $1k-$2k arena, you enter into a state of increasingly diminished returns on your investment. Whatever price you’re looking at spending, be sure to check out Brownells and their incredible inventory of AR-15s and other firearms.

Henlō everybōrdy!
Welcome to Guerilla Gear Lodge. We are a complete resource for reviews, opinions, articles, stories and all around information concerning the outdoors and tactical lifestyles.
Here at GGG, we appreciate the experiences of those rugged, legendary warriors, explorers, adventurers, and outdoorsmen/women that came before us. From areas such as the Hudson Bay in the colonial era, to folks like Chesty Puller, we believe that it is important to study and remember the rough edges that our country is founded on, and to glean any knowledge we can from these larger-than-life, often mysterious people and places.
We also will be doing reviews on as much gear and guns as we can. Coming up soon, within the week, will be a review on the brand new T-Rex Arms rifle sling. We are also working on an article concerning the mounting of knives to chest rigs and plate carriers. We are going to look into the history of carrying gear on our chests and bodies, and do an in-depth survey of Mongolian war tactics and how this highly efficient conquest empire became so dominating. We also have some hikes and adventures planned, and we will be posting photos and experience reports of these in hopes of increasing interest of modern tactical shooters and gear enthusiasts in the benefits of getting outdoors in the traditional sense. We will be doing some bush crafting and camping, fishing, camp cooking, and general cool stuff like that.
Other interesting upcoming events will be documented as well, such as tactical classes we attend, and our start into the endeavor of rock climbing. One interesting topic we will discuss, is our personal skill level when it comes to firearms training, mountaineering, survival, etc. These skills will be discussed, and each time we attend a class, we will document what areas we feel we have improved in after the training and experience we receive. You will be able to grow with us, and we hope to document a realistic timeline you can expect to “git gud” at something based on our experiences.
Another topic we will delve into will be home defense. There are many facets to a well protected abode, and we hope to look into some of this and go over some stuff that you may not have thought of yet. Preparedness is key when it comes to protecting your castle and your family.
We look forward to all of this and we are very excited for what lies in the future! Join us here at Guerilla Gear Lodge, grow with us, offer your input (we would love to hear it!), and remember, keep it crispy!

Got some trigger time this weekend and got to break in my @saviorequipment Specialists36" - Double Rifle Case which carried my @sonsoflibertygw blaster. It’s a great case with a solid carrying handle, shoulder strap for side carrying and two shoulder straps for carrying like a pack.
