Adding a 4 or a 5xl would be absolutely impossible and a complete waste. A unisex 2XL is already a 4XL for women. And as you said a unisex 5XL would actually cost much more, like at least 30/40% more and then fans would start complaining saying they ara fatphobic or things like that.
I wouldn’t be so blunt as to say it’d be a waste but I do think the production costs and therefor the actual sales price would be an issue for many. and it might sound crazy at first glance but I don’t think your 30-40% price increase is far off at all. because it isn’t just additional material consumption it’s additional costs of logistics (fewer sizes to a box, higher item weight etc etc which all adds to costs that then adds to price) also you’re correct; the unisex 2xl does match a standard size women’s 4xl
I do think it’s a real issue not for 28 specifically but in general that larger sizes are so costly to make and many brands can’t or won’t shoulder the additional cost or price hike. (but also we as consumers have a skewed view of what clothes should actually cost because a $10 t-shirt isn’t actually possible to produce without someone somewhere not getting paid for they labour..)
okay this got long haha

ITALY’S COMMUNIST RECIPE FOR DISASTER
Published March 24, 2020 |  By Giacomino Nicolazzo
Montecalvo, Lombardy, Italy.
As I sit here in my involuntary isolation, it was just reported that overnight 743 more people died and 5.249 new cases have been reported. This brings the total cases of infection to 69,176 and the body count to 6,820. We take relief in knowing that 8,326 people have recovered so far. ( Numbers as of 3/24, 8:30pm in Italy.)
Most towns here in Italy, from the upper reaches of the Alps to the ancient shores of Sicilia and Sardenia, while not deserted, are closer to being ghost towns than the bustling centers of tourism, business and daily life they were just a few weeks ago.Stores and shops have been shuttered. Restaurants and coffee shops no longer serve customers. Schools, universities, sporting arenas…even our museums and theaters…all closed. Even the Vatican City has closed its gates and armed patrols monitor the 20 foot tall walls that protect it!
Streets and roads are now empty for as far as the eye can see. Normally they would be filled with crazed Italian drivers in tiny cars and scooters (the ones that sound like demonic insects) darting here and there, reaching the limits of centrifugal force on our roundabouts. In the piazze of our towns and cities, there are now officially more pigeons than people. Many of us know someone who has been infected and recovered. Some of us know someone who did not recover…now they are dead. But everyone knows someone who has been affected by this microscopic monster in one way or another.
Sixty million of us are in lock-down…it is like a war zone here. We are being held prisoner in our own homes by an unseen enemy that sneaked in unnoticed…by most of us. As you will read in just a few more minutes, there were those who knew something like this was coming…or at least they should have.So who is to blame? With all this craziness swirling like a whirlpool at our feet, I just had to find the blame answer. And so I have spent my free time (of which I have a lot in these days) digging and researching. I was literally shocked to discover how this has come to be.I am not going to bore you with talk of Patient ‘0’ who spread it to Patient ‘1’ and how mathematics efficiently explains the rapid expansion of infection. No…I am going to tell you how (as I see it) the virus came to Italy. It has everything to do with communists. Allow me to explain.Beginning in about 2014, Matteo Renzi, the imbecile ex-mayor of Firenze (Florence) acting as the leader of the Partito Democratico (synonymous with the Italian Communist party), somehow managed to get himself elected as Italy’s Prime Minister. To give you a proper frame of reference, Matteo Renzi was so far left, he would make Barack Obama look like Barry Goldwater!
At the same time that Renzi was leading Italy into oblivion, strange things were happening in Italy’s economy. Banks were failing…but not closing. Retirement ages were being extended…for some reason the pension funds were dwindling or disappearing. The national sales tax we call IVA (Value Added Tax) rose from 18% to 20%, then to 21% and again to 22%.And in the midst of all this financial chicanery, the Chinese began furiously buying up Italian real estate and businesses in the North. Now the reason I mention Renzi and the Chinese together is that strange things were also going on between the governments of Italy and China. A blind eye was being turned to the way the Chinese were buying businesses in the financial, telecommunication, industrial and fashion sectors of Italy’s economy, all of which take place in Milano.
To be brief…China was getting away with purchases and acquisitions in violation of Italian law and EU Trade Agreements with the US and the UK…and no one in either of those countries (not Obama in the US or Cameron in the UK) said a thing in their country’s defense. As a matter of fact, much of it was hidden from the public in all three countries. In 2014, China infused the Italian economy with €5 billion through purchases of companies costing less than €100 million each.
By the time Renzi left office (in disgrace) in 2016, Chinese acquisitions had exceeded €52 billion. When the dust settled, China owned more than 300 companies…representing 27% of the major Italian corporations. The Bank of China now owns five major banks in Italy…all of which had been secretly (and illegally) propped up by Renzi using pilfered pension funds! Soon after, the China Milano Equity Exchange was opened and much of Italy’s wealth was being funneled back to the Chinese mainland.
Chinese state entities own Italy’s major telecommunication corporation (Telecom) as well as its major utilities (ENI and ENEL). Upon entry into the telecommunication market, Huawei established a facility in Segrate, a suburb of Milano. It launched is first research center there and worked on the study of microwaves which has resulted in the possibly-dangerous technology we call 5G.China also now owns controlling interest in Fiat-Chrysler, Prysmian and Terna. You will be surprised to know that when you put a set of Pirelli tires on your car, the profits are going to China.
Yep…the Chinese colossus of ChemChina, a chemical industry titan, bought that company too!Last but not least is Ferretti yachts…the most prestigious yacht builder in Europe. Incredibly, it is no longer owned by the Ferretti family.
But the sector in which Chinese companies invested most was Italy’s profitable fashion industry. The Pinco Pallino, Miss Sixty, Sergio Tacchini, Roberta di Camerino and Mariella Burani brands have been acquired by 100%.Designer Salvatore Ferragamo sold 16% and Caruso sold 35%. The most famous case is Krizia, purchased in 2014 by Shenzhen Marisfrolg Fashion Company, one of the leaders of high-priced, ready-to-wear fashions in Asia.
Throughout all of these purchases and acquisitions, Renzi’s government afforded the Chinese unrestricted and unfettered access to Italy and its financial markets, many coming through without customs inspections.
Quite literally, tens of thousands of Chinese came in through Milano (illegally) and went back out carrying money, technology and corporate secrets.
Thousands more were allowed to enter and disappeared into shadows of Milano and other manufacturing cities of Lombardy, only to surface in illegal sewing shops, producing knock-off designer clothes and slapping ‘Made In Italy’ labels on them. All with the tacit approval of the Renzi government. It was not until there was a change in the governing party in Italy that the sweatshops and the illegal entry and departure of Chinese nationals was stopped. Matteo Salvini, representing the Lega Nord party, closed Italy’s ports to immigrants and systematically began disassembling the sweatshops and deporting those in Italy illegally.
But his rise to power was short-lived. Italy is a communist country…socialism is in the national DNA. Ways were found to remove Salvini, after which the communist party, under the direction of Giuseppe Conte, reopened the ports. Immediately, thousands of unvetted, undocumented refugees from the Middle East and East Africa began pouring in again.
Access was again provided to the Chinese, under the old terms, and as a consequence thousands of Chinese, the majority from Wuhan, began arriving in Milano.
In December of last year, the first inklings of a coronavirus were noticed in Lombardy…in the Chinese neighborhoods. There is no doubt amongst senior medical officials that the virus was brought here from China.
By the end of January 2020 cases were being reported left and right. By mid-February the virus was beginning to seriously overload the Lombardy hospitals and medical clinics. They are now in a state of collapse.
The Far-Left politicians sold out and betrayed the Italian people with open border policies and social justice programs. One of the reasons the health care system collapsed so quickly is because the Renzi government (and now continued under the Conte government) redirected funds meant to sustain the medical system, to pay for the tens of thousands of immigrants brought in to Italy against the will of the Italian people.
If you remember the horrible earthquake that decimated the villages around Amatricia, in the mountains east of Rome in 2015, you would also remember how the world responded by sending millions of dollars to help those affected.
But there is a law in Italy that prevents private donations to charitable Italian organizations. All money and donations received must be turned over to a government agency, who in turn is to appropriate the funds as needed. But that agency is corrupt just as are all the others. Most of the money never reached a single victim in the mountains. The Renzi government redirected the vast majority of those funds to pay for the growing immigrant and refugee costs.
As the economy worsened under the burden of illegal immigration, compounded by gross government spending and incompetence, unemployment rose quickly…especially among young people. The unemployment rate for men and women under age 35 is close to 40%.
So more money was diverted from the health care system and used to pay what is known here as guaranteed income. Whether you work or not you are paid here, especially if you belong to the PD! The government simply raises taxes on those who do work
.Let me give you a quick example of the height of insanity to which Italian taxation has risen.
If you live in a building that has a balcony or balconies…and any of those balconies cast a shadow on the ground, you must pay a public shadow tax! I will say no more!
The point I am trying to make here is that not only did the Chinese bring the virus to Italy (and the rest of the world) it was far-Left politics and policies that facilitated it.
This should hopefully be a warning to Americans that while they work to rid themselves of the China Virus, they should just as vehemently endeavor to rid their government of any politician that circumvents the Constitution and ignores the laws of the land…plain and simple.

ITALY’S  RECIPE FOR DISASTER
Published March 24, 2020
By Giacomino Nicolazzo; one of Italy’s most beloved writers.  Born and raised in Central Pennsylvania USA, he lives in a small village in Lombardy where he writes his books.
Montecalvo, Lombardy, Italy.
As I sit here in my involuntary isolation, it was just reported that overnight 743 more people died and 5.249 new cases have been reported. This brings the total cases of infection to 69,176 and the body count to 6,820. We take relief in knowing that 8,326 people have recovered so far (Numbers as of 3/24, 8:30pm in Italy.)
Most towns here in Italy, from the upper reaches of the Alps to the ancient shores of Sicilia and Sardenia, while not deserted, are closer to being ghost towns than the bustling centers of tourism, business and daily life they were just a few weeks ago.
Stores and shops have been shuttered.
Sixty million of us are in lockdown…it is like a war zone here. We are being held prisoner in our own homes by an unseen enemy that sneaked in unnoticed…by most of us. As you will read in just a few more minutes, there were those who knew something like this was coming…or at least they should have.
So who is to blame? With all this craziness swirling like a whirlpool at our feet, I just had to find the blame answer. And so I have spent my free time (of which I have a lot in these days) digging and researching. I was literally shocked to discover how this has come to be.
I am not going to bore you with talk of Patient ‘0’ who spread it to Patient ‘1’ and how mathematics efficiently explains the rapid expansion of infection. No…I am going to tell you how (as I see it) the virus came to Italy.
It has everything to do with communism. Allow me to explain. Beginning in about 2014, Matteo Renzi, the imbecile ex-mayor of Firenze (Florence) acting as the leader of the Partito Democratico (synonymous with the Italian Communist party), somehow managed to get himself elected as Italy’s Prime Minister. To give you a proper frame of reference, Matteo Renzi was so far left, he would make Barack Obama look like Barry Goldwater!
At the same time that Renzi was leading Italy into oblivion, strange things were happening in Italy’s economy. Banks were failing…but not closing. Retirement ages were being extended…for some reason the pension funds were dwindling or disappearing... The national sales tax we call IVA (Value Added Tax) rose from 18% to 20%, then to 21% and again to 22%.
And in the midst of all this financial chicanery, the Chinese began furiously buying up Italian real estate and businesses in the North.
To be brief…China was getting away with purchases and acquisitions in violation of Italian law and EU Trade Agreements with the US and the UK…and no one in either of those countries (not Obama in the US or
Cameron in the UK) said a thing in their country’s defense. As a matter of fact, much of it was hidden from the public in all three countries.
In ‪2014, China‬ infused the Italian economy with €5 billion through purchases of companies costing less than €100 million each By the time Renzi left office (in disgrace) in 2016, Chinese acquisitions had exceeded €52 billion.
Chinese state entities own Italy’s major telecommunication corporation (Telecom) as well as its major utilities (ENI and ENEL)... Upon entry into the telecommunication market, Huawei established a facility in Segrate, a suburb of Milano. It launched is first research center there and worked on the study of microwaves which has resulted in the possibly-dangerous technology we call 5G.
China also now owns controlling interest in Fiat-Chrysler, Prysmian and Terna. You will be surprised to know that when you put a set of Pirelli tires on your car, the profits are going to China. Yep…the Chinese
colossus of ChemChina, a chemical industry titan, bought that company too!
Last but not least is Ferretti yachts…the most prestigious yacht builder in Europe. Incredibly, it is no longer owned by the Ferretti family.
But the sector in which Chinese companies invested most was Italy’s profitable fashion industry. The Pinco Pallino, Miss Sixty, Sergio Tacchini, Roberta di Camerino and Mariella Burani brands have been acquired by 100%.
Designer Salvatore Ferragamo sold 16% and Caruso sold 35%.
Immediately, thousands of unvetted,
undocumented refugees from the Middle East and East Africa began pouring in again.
If you remember the horrible earthquake that decimated the villages around Amatricia, in the mountains east of Rome in 2015, you would also remember how the world responded by sending millions of dollars to help those affected
The government simply raises taxes on those who do work.
Let me give you a quick example of the height of insanity to which Italian taxation has risen.

John Berger, Ways of Seeing (excerpt), BBC (1972)
In the cities in which we live, all of us see hundreds of publicity images every day of our lives. No other kind of image confronts us so frequently. In no other form of society in history has there been such a concentration of images, such a density of visual messages.
One may remember or forget these messages but briefly one takes them in, and for a moment they stimulate the imagination by way of either memory or expectation. The publicity image belongs to the moment. We see it as we turn a page, as we turn a corner, as a vehicle passes us. Or we see it on a television screen while waiting for the commercial break to end. Publicity images also belong to the moment in the sense that they must be continually renewed and made up-to-date. Yet they never speak of the present. Often they refer to the past and always they speak of the future.
We are now so accustomed to being addressed by these images that we scarcely notice their total impact. A person may notice a particular image or piece of information because it corresponds to some particular interest he has. But we accept the total system of publicity images as we accept an element of climate. For example, the fact that these images belong to the moment but speak of the future produces a strange effect which has become so familiar that we scarcely notice it. Usually it is we who pass the image - walking, travelling, turning a page; on the TV screen it is somewhat different but even then we are theoretically the active agent - we can look away, turn down the sound, make some coffee. Yet despite this, one has the impression that publicity images are continually passing us, like express trains on their way to some distant terminus. We are static; they are dynamic - until the newspaper is thrown away, the television program continues or the paster is posted over.
Publicity is usually explained and justified as a competitive medium which ultimately benefits the public (the consumer) and the most efficient manufacturers - and thus the national economy. It is closely related to certain ideas about freedom: freedom of choice for the purchaser: freedom of enterprise for the manufacturer. The great hoardings and the publicity neons of the cities of capitalism are the immediate visible sign of "The Free World." For many in Eastern Europe such images in the West sum up what they in the East lack. Publicity, it is thought, offers a free choice.
It is true that in publicity one brand of manufacture, one firm, competes with another; but it is also true that every publicity image confirms and enhances every other. Publicity is not merely an assembly of competing messages: it is a language in itself which is always being used to make the same general proposal. Within publicity, choices are offered between this cream and that cream, that car and this car, but publicity as a system only makes a single proposal.
It proposes to each of us that we transform ourselves, or our lives, by buying something more. This more, it proposes, will make us in some way richer - even though we will be poorer by having spent our money.
Publicity persuades us of such a transformation by showing us people who have apparently been transformed and are, as a result, enviable. The state of being envied is what constitutes glamour. And publicity is the process of manufacturing glamour.
It is important here not to confuse publicity with the pleasure or benefits to be enjoyed from the things it advertises. Publicity is effective precisely because it feeds upon the real. Clothes, food, cars, cosmetics, baths, sunshine are real things to be enjoyed in themselves. Publicity begins by working on a natural appetite for pleasure. But it cannot offer the real object of pleasure and there is no convincing substitute for a pleasure in that pleasure's own terms. The more convincingly publicity conveys the pleasure of bathing in a warm, distant sea, the more the spectator-buyer will become aware that he is hundreds of miles away from that sea and the more remote the chance of bathing in it will seem to him. This is why publicity can never really afford to be about the product or opportunity it is proposing to the buyer who is not yet enjoying it. Publicity is never a celebration of a pleasure-in-itself. Publicity is always about the future buyer. It offers him an image of himself made glamorous by the product or opportunity it is trying to sell. The image then makes him envious of himself as he might be. Yet what makes this self-which-he-might-be enviable? The envy of other. Publicity is about social relations, not objects. Its promise is not of pleasure, but of happiness: happiness as judged from the outside by others. The happiness of being envied is glamour.
Being envied is a solitary form of reassurance. It depends precisely upon not sharing your experience with those who envy you. You are observed with interest but you do not observe with interest - if you do, you will become less enviable. In this respect the envied are like bureaucrats; the more impersonal they are, the greater the illusion (for themselves and for others) of their power. The power of the glamorous resides in their supposed happiness: the power of the bureaucrat in his supposed authority. It is this which explains the absent, unfocused look of so many glamour images. The look out over the looks of envy which sustain them.
The spectator-buyer is meant to envy herself as she will become if she buys the product. She is meant to imagine herself transformed by the product into an object of envy for others, an envy which will then justify her loving herself. One could put this another way: the publicity image steals her love of herself as she is, and offers it back to her for the price of the product. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Publicity is the culture of the consumer society. It propagates through images that society's belief in itself. There are several reasons why these images use the language of oil painting.
Oil painting, before it was anything else, was a celebration of private property. As an art-form it derived from the principle that you are what you have. It is a mistake to think of publicity supplanting the visual art of post-Renaissance Europe; it is the last moribund form of that art.
Publicity is, in essence, nostalgic. It has to sell the past to the future. It cannot itself supply the standards of its own claims. And so all its references to quality are bound to be retrospective and traditional. It would lack both confidence and credibility if it used a strictly contemporary language.
Publicity needs to turn to its own advantage the traditional education of the average spectator-buyer. What he has learnt at school of history, mythology, poetry can be used in the manufacturing of glamour. Cigars can be sold in the name of a King, underwear in connection with the Sphinx, a new car by reference to the status of a country house. In the language of oil painting these vague historical or poetic references are always present. The fact that they are imprecise and ultimately meaningless is an advantage: they should not be understandable, they should merely be reminiscent of cultural lessons half-learnt. Publicity makes all history mythical, but to do so effectively it needs a visual language with historical dimensions.
Lastly, a technical development made it easy to translate the language of oil painting into publicity cliches. This was the invention, about fifteen years ago, of cheap color photography. Such photography can reproduce the color and texture and tangibility of objects as only oil paint had been able to do before. Color photography is to the spectator-buyer what oil paint was to the spectator-owner. Both media use similar, highly tactile means to play upon the spectator's sense of acquiring the real thing which the image shows. In both cases his feeling that he can almost touch what is in the image reminds him how he might or does possess the real thing.
Yet, despite this continuity of language, the function of publicity is very different from that of the oil painting. The spectator-buyer stands in a very different relation to the world from the spectator-owner.
The oil painting showed what its owner was already enjoying among his possessions and his way of life. It consolidated his own sense of his own value. It enhanced his view of himself as he already was. It began with facts, the facts of his life. The paintings embellished the interior in which he actually lived.
The purpose of publicity is to make the spectator marginally dissatisfied with his present way of life. Not with the way of life of society, but with his own within it. It suggests that if he buys what it is offering, his life will become better. It offers him an improved alternative to what he is.
The oil painting was addressed to those who made money out of the market. Publicity is addressed to those who constitute the market, to the spectator-buyer who is also the consumer-producer from whom profits are made twice over - as worker and then as buyer. The only places relatively free of publicity are the quarters of the very rich; their money is theirs to keep.
All publicity works upon anxiety. The sum of everything is money, to get money is to overcome anxiety. Alternatively the anxiety on which publicity plays is the fear that having nothing you will be nothing. Money is life. Not in the sense that without money you starve. Not in the sense that capital gives one class power over the entire lives of another class. But in the sense that money is the token of, and the key to, every human capacity. The power to spend money is the power to live. According to the legends of publicity, those who lack the power to spend money become literally faceless. Those who have the power become loveable.
Publicity increasingly uses sexuality to sell any product or service. But this sexuality is never free in itself; it is a symbol of something presumed to be larger than it: the good life in which you can buy whatever you want. To be able to buy is the same thing as being sexually desirable; occasionally this is the explicit message of publicity, usually it is the implicit message, i.e. if you are able to buy this product you will be lovable. If you cannot buy it, you will be less lovable.
For publicity the present is by definition insufficient. The oil painting was thought of as a permanent record. One of the pleasures a painting gave to its owner was the thought that it would convey the image of his present to the future of his descendants. Thus the oil painting was naturally painted in the present tense. The painter painted what was before him, either in reality or in imagination. The publicity image which is ephemeral uses only the future tense. With this you WILL become desirable. In these surroundings all your relationships WILL become happy and radiant.
Publicity principally addressed to the working class tends to promise a personal transformation through the function of the particular product it is selling (Cinderella); middle-class publicity promises a transformation of relationships through a general atmosphere created by an ensemble of products (The Enchanted Palace).
Publicity speaks in the future tense and yet the achievement of this future is endlessly deferred. How then does publicity remain credible - or credible enough to exert the influence it does? It remains credible because the truthfulness of publicity is judged, not by the real fulfillment of its promises, but by the relevance of its fantasies to those of the spectator-buyer. Its essential application is not to reality but to day-dreams.
To understand this better me must go back to the notion of glamour. Glamour is a modern invention. In the heyday of the oil painting it did not exist. Ideas of grace, elegance, authority amounted to something apparently similar but fundamentally different. Mrs. Siddons as seen by Gainsborough is not glamorous, because she is not presented as enviable and therefore happy. She may be seen as wealthy, beautiful, talented, lucky. But her qualities are her own and have been recognized as such. What she is does not entirely depend upon others' envy - which is how, for example, Andy Warhol presents Marilyn Monroe.
Glamour cannot exist without personal social envy being a common and widespread emotion. The industrial society which has moved towards democracy and then stopped half way is the ideal society for generating such an emotion. The pursuit of individual happiness has been acknowledged as a universal right. Yet the existing social conditions make the individual feel powerless. He lives in the contradiction between what he is and what he would like to be. Either he then becomes fully conscious of the contradiction and its causes, and so joins the political struggle for a full democracy which entails, amongst other thing, the overthrow of capitalism; or else he lives, continually subject to an envy which, compounded with his sense of powerlessness, dissolves into recurrent day-dreams.
It is this which makes it possible to understand why publicity remains credible. The gap between what publicity actually offers and the future it promises, corresponds with the gap between what the spectator-buyer feels himself to be and what he would like to be. The two gaps become one; and instead of the single gap being bridged by action or lived experience, it is filled with glamorous day-dreams. The process is often reinforced by working conditions. The interminable present of mean- ingless working hours is "balanced" by a dreamt future in which imaginary activity replaces the passivity of the moment. In his or her day-dreams the passive worker becomes the active consumer. The working self envies the consuming self.
No two dreams are the same. Some are instantaneous, others prolonged, The dream is always personal to the dreamer. Publicity does not manufacture the dream. All that it does is to propose to each one of us that we are not yet enviable - yet could be.
Publicity has another important social function. The fact that this function has not been planned as a purpose by those who make and use publicity in no way lessens its significance. Publicity turns consumption into a substitute for democracy. The choice of what one eats (or wears or drives) takes the place of significant political choice. Publicity helps to mask and compensate for all that is undemocratic within society. And it also masks what is happening in the rest of the world. Publicity adds up to a kind of philosophical system. It explains everything in its own terms. It interprets the world.
The entire world becomes a setting for the fulfillment of publicity's promise of the good life. The world smiles at us. It offers itself to us. And because everywhere is imagined as offering itself to us, everywhere is more or less the same. The contrast between publicity's interpretation of the world and the world's actual condition is a very stark one, and this sometimes becomes evident in the color magazines which deal with news stories. Overleaf is the contents page of such a magazine. The sock of such contrasts is considerable: not only because of the coexistence of the two worlds shown, but also because of the cynicism of the culture which shows them one above the other. It can be argues that the juxtaposition of images was not planned. Nevertheless the text, the photographs taken in Pakistan, the photographs taken for the advertisements, the editing of the magazine, the layout of the publicity, the printing of both, the fact that advertiser's pages and news pages cannot be co-ordinated - all these are produced by the same culture.
It is not, however, the moral shock of the contrast which needs emphasizing. Advertisers themselves can take account of the shock. The Advertisers Weekly (3 March 1972) reports that some publicity firms, now aware of the commercial danger of such unfortunate juxtapositions in new magazines, are deciding to use less brash, more somber images, often in black and white rather than color. What we need to realize is what such contrasts reveal about the nature of publicity.
Publicity is essentially eventless. It extends just as far as nothing else is happening. For publicity all real events are exceptional and happen only to strangers. In the BanglaDesh photographs, the events were tragic and distant. But the contrast would have been no less stark if they had been events near at hand in Derry or Birmingham. Nor is the contrast necessarily dependent upon the events being tragic. If they are tragic, their tragedy alerts our moral sense to the contrast. Yet if the events were joyous and if they were photographed in a direct and unstereotyped way the contrast would be just as great.
Publicity, situated in a future continually deferred, excludes the present and so eliminates all becoming, all development. Experience is impossible within it. All that happens, happens outside it. The fact that publicity is eventless would be immediately obvious if it did not use a language which makes of tangibility an event in itself. Everything publicity shows is there awaiting acquisition. The act of acquiring has taken the place of all other actions, the sense of having has obliterated all other senses.
Publicity exerts an enormous influence and is a political phenomenon of great importance. But its offer is as narrow as its references are wide. It recognizes nothing except the power to acquire. All other human faculties or needs are made subsidiary to this power. All hopes are gathered together, made homogeneous, simplified, so that they become the intense yet vague, magical yet repeatable promise offered in every purchase. No other kind of hope or satisfaction or pleasure can any longer be envisaged within the culture of capitalism.
Publicity is the life of this culture - in so far as without publicity capitalism could not survive - and at the same time publicity is its dream.
Capitalism survives by forcing the majority, whom it exploits, to define their own interests as narrowly as possible. This was once achieved by extensive deprivation. Today in the developed countries it is being achieved by imposing a false standard of what is and what is not desirable.

It’s been a bad week in the fight between fast fashion and the planet. First, Missguided came in strong with the big ‘fuck you climate breakdown’ that is their £1 bikini, which, despite some serious online backlash, sold out almost instantly. Next up, the Environmental Audit Committee confirmed that the government has rejected every single one of the recommendations in its ‘Fixing Fashion’ report they released earlier this year.
Their ideas to tackle issues such as waste, pollution, modern slavery, and over-consumption within the fashion industry included a tax of 1p per garment to be paid by retailers, a ban on incinerating and landfilling unsold stock, environmental targets for companies with an annual turnover of £36million or more and an ‘Extended Producer Responsibility’ scheme that would force retailers to take responsibility for the waste they produce.
All solid ideas that would make big, sweeping changes and transform the industry for the better. But, the government wants to keep their pals rich, so it looks like we’re going to have to sort this shit out ourselves. Here’s how.
CONTACT YOUR MP
The government might have rejected the recommendations, but it doesn’t mean the case is closed (and we all know they love to perform a dramatic U-turn on the big stuff every now and then). After a lot of protest and action, parliament finally approved a motion to declare an environment and climate emergency earlier this year, proving they can and do bend to pressure (even if it takes years). The fashion industry contributes around 10% of global greenhouse emissions and produces 20% of global waste water, meaning it’s closely tied to the issue of climate breakdown – which is proving harder and harder for politicians to ignore. Contact your local MP and tell them it’s important to you, tell them it will sway how you vote, and ask what their intentions are. Make this too hard for them to ignore too.

CONTACT OFFENDING BRANDS, PUBLICLY
Since sustainability has become a buzzword, brands have scrambled to tell the world how green and ethical they are – which would be great if it was true. But once you do a little digging, their claims are normally pretty flimsy and nothing more than greenwashing. Instead of letting brands set the narrative with carefully chosen words, contact them publicly (aka @ them on Twitter) about their ethics, factories, fabrics, and garment workers. Even if they don’t answer, their silence might just say it all.
KEEP YOUR CLOTHES FOR LONGER
The idea that individuals can fix an entire multi-billion pound industry all by themselves is obviously insane, but there are a few things that most of us can do that will genuinely help. Keeping your clothes for longer is a big one. As in, literally make zero effort and leave the clothes you have hanging in your wardrobe instead of getting rid of them.
We spend less money on clothes as a percentage of our household income than we did 20 years ago yet buy 400 per cent more items of clothing and keep them for half as long. Extend the life of your clothes by just three months, and it will result in a five to ten per cent 10% reduction in their water, carbon, and waste footprints. Make that nine months and the figures increase to 20 to 30 per cent. And after you’ve waited for a few weeks, you’ll probably like them again anyway.
BUY FEWER CLOTHES
We know it sounds obvious, but seeing as shopping is practically a default part of living for most of us it can be a difficult habit to break (check out our guide to tackling this). With over 100 billion garments produced every single year, there’s already more than enough to go around, but the massive turnover of trends (plus feeling sad, feeling happy, celebrating, commiserating, being stressed, being heartbroken, being bored…) keeps us buying more and more.
If the fashion industry carries on producing at its current rate, it will account for a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050 but if we slow down, we might just be able to avoid it. It’s worth noting, though, that as much as 30 per cent of clothing made is never actually sold, so supply and demand aren’t always proportional. As individuals, with this in mind, we can only do so much really do need some input from brands and government on this one.
CHOOSE SECONDHAND FIRST
By now, pretty much everyone is over the whole ‘but what if someone died in it?’ horror when it comes to secondhand clothes, so when you do need to buy something, and you’re able to do so, make second hand your first port of call. Scouring charity shops, vintage stores and markets, eBay, and apps like Depop, Vinted, and Vestiaire, before you given in and buy new: not only will it extend the lifespan of the garment and therefore reduce its footprint, it stops another garment entering circulation. And that’s before we even get started on the £££s you’ll probably save.
VOTE FOR CHANGE
Sorry to break it to you (okay fine, this is likely news to no one) but fashion is a huge, dirty, complicated, massively unregulated, multi-billion pound industry. It’s fun and creative and expressive but it’s also 100 per cent serious enough to have a place in political discussion and if you care about its impact, you should vote for change. It’s a pretty new issue on the political mainstage and not that many MPs are speaking up on the subject, but people like Mary Creagh and Caroline Lucas (who are both on the EAC) are stand-out examples. Oh, and the ones who rejected the EAC’s recommendations? The Tories, duh!
ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS
There’s one key difference between brands who are genuinely sustainable and brands who aren’t: the brands who are love to answer questions and the ones who aren’t absolutely hate to. If you’ve gone to the trouble of carefully selecting a sustainable cotton farming co-operative or setting up a fairtrade factory, you’re going to want to talk about it. If you’ve cobbled together a half-arsed paragraph about trying to be ethical wherever possible, you’re probably not. So ask questions all the time. Here’s a few to get you started: Who makes your clothes? Where are they made? What are they made from? Where are your factories? What is your waste policy?
No 1p garment tax, no ban on incinerating/landfilling unsold stock, no environmental targets and heavy reliance on SCAP's voluntary scheme (run by WRAP which has lost 80% of its government funding since 2010). So disappointing. https://twitter.com/CommonsEAC/status/1140861798268252161 …

SUPPORT AND BOOST LEGISLATIVE CHANGE
While we’re waiting for our government to get its act together, you can support and signal boost legislative change elsewhere. Not only will this prove to our government that moves like that are actually popular, it will show other people what’s possible on a wider scale. The Bangladesh Accord, set up after Rana Plaza to keep garment workers safe, garnered massive public support which helped it gain 220 brand sign-ups. And more recently, surging support for the Greens around Europe prompted France to ban the destruction of unsold consumer goods after the governing party made eco-credentials a major part of their manifesto for the European elections. Spread the message on social media! Tell your friends! Shout it from the rooftops if you feel like it! But make it known: change is needed now.
SHARE FACTS, BUT DON’T SHAME
The sustainable and ethical fashion movement is growing fast, but it’s built on privileged foundations and thin white women wearing linen on Instagram have basically become the face of it. Despite the ultra-curated facade, there’s a plethora of obstacles that are often overlooked. Not everyone can afford to start buying organic cotton clothes at five times the price they’re used to paying, for instance, and it’s difficult to find affordable, ethically made clothes that go above a size 16. It’s easy to point the finger at people who shop at Primark, but for the movement to work it needs to be inclusive and understanding. Share the shocking facts and talk about the problems with the industry, but don’t shame individuals. We need to work together on this one!

Ladies Who Launch: Louise Autrup Vinkel of ArtFusion Copenhagen
Art and fashion have always walked hand-in-hand, but Danish fashion brand ArtFusion Copenhagen has taken their intersection more seriously, and literally, than most. They base each collection on original art work created by their co-founder. Seeing the clothes next to the pieces that inspired them showcases the cohesiveness of each season.
ArtFusion’s clothes are easy to wear, with clean lines and timeless silhouettes. They use a surprising amount of color and pattern for a Scandinavian brand, but the result is artistic rather than simply loud or busy. They’re clothes you’ll want to wear season after season, but that will never feel boring.
We spoke with co-founder of ArtFusion Copenhagen, Louise Autrup Vinkel, about creating fashion from art and the importance of sustainability:
When did you launch ArtFusion?
My husband Jesper and I launched ArtFusion in 2017; our first collection was “The Future is Ours” for spring/summer 2018. Jesper had a long career in the textile industry, in procurement and product development. I was educated at the Copenhagen School of Art in painting, sculpture, and poetry. Prior to starting ArtFusion, we had wanted to start a womenswear brand for some time; a creative project combining our interests and passions. Jesper had the production know-how and I had the creativity.
We recently added a new partner who has experience in the fashion industry, particularly sales. I feel that we are now the perfect team: we have complementary skills and a shared passion.
ArtFusion Copenhagen is an expression of art through fashion. Every collection is based on my work in the studio, which gives each collection its own direction and substance. We strive to create original collections that are also high-quality. Our sustainability profile is important to us, and we make sure to advocate for better standards in the fashion industry.
You focus on the cross-section between fashion and art. How are these things related, and how are they different? Do you think people have a hard time accepting fashion as art?
All art forms comes from people with a desire to express themselves in some way. Most design is not meant to be art, and clothing design also has a practical function. For me, the fashion industry is fascinating, because it tells us so much about who we are, and who we want to be. It is a mirror of the tendencies in our society – both negative and positive – and a historical reference. It is a way of communicating with your surroundings, just as art is.
How should a person wearing your clothes feel?
I hope that every woman wearing our clothes does so because she likes them. Because she feels they compliments her personality and make her feel good about herself. I hope our clothes makes her feel comfortable, confident, and ready to take on the world.
Do you think your clothes fit within the Scandinavian aesthetic?
The heritage of Scandinavian design informs the way I see the world. I think, however, that the Scandinavian aesthetic is changing. It’s going from a minimalist, clean look, towards more individual styling, with colors, prints, and more choices in general.
Explain the production process for your clothes; where is the textile sourced, and where are your clothes made?
We produce in India, Portugal, and Ukraine. We have a Danish supplier. We’ve established a strong relationship with our suppliers; we consider them partners who share our vision of sustainability. We try to use mainly nature fibers, so the textiles can last season after season.
A short term goal for us is to move more of our production to Europe. Within the next few years, we would like all of our production to be in Europe.
You are concerned with sustainability. What does that word mean to you, and how do you incorporate it into your clothes and production?
It is vital that the products I make are not only are beautiful and durable, but contribute to making a better world, where we care for both the environment and the people who make our clothes. We need to change our perspective on consuming. That’s why we have chosen to produce only two collections per year.
I see positive changes in the fashion industry happening on a global scale, but it’s happening too slowly. We are trying to create an alternative way of designing; our goal is to be a positive influence in the industry.
All of your collections are inspired by art that you make. That art is also for sale in your store. Take us through the process of creating art, and then using it to inspire a clothing collection. Is that the way you plan to continue designing the future?
I am interested in our perception of the world. Our imagination and dreams. I am amazed by the fact that we know so little about the universe and our souls. I try to create objects that moves in between the known and unknown, where new connections can be discovered.
When I start to work on a new piece, I try to do it in a strutted way, but it never works. Sometimes I have a picture in my mind, when I start to paint, it always come out as something else. I am often surprised by the result. It is a unpredictable process and that is what I love. Just to surrender to the work and forget myself for a while.

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Jeff Phillips of Grown Eyewear, a brand that sells wooden sunglasses. Some stats:Product: Wooden sunglasses.Revenue/mo: $25,000Started: June 2011Location: Byron Bay, AustraliaFounders: 1Employees: 5Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?Hi everyone, my name is Jeff Phillips and I am the founder of GROWN® Eyewear. We focus on designing, manufacturing and selling handcrafted & sustainable wood and bamboo sunglasses. We’re proud to say that we are Australia’s Original sustainable sunglasses company too! As part of our mission, for every pair sold through our North America or European shops we fully fund sight-restoring eye Surgery for 1 person or diagnostic eye exams for 12 children through our giving partner in SEVA.Similarly, in Australia each pair sold will fund nutritional needs for orphaned or injured animals through our Australian partner, WIRES.Our average monthly revenue is $25,000.What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?I was a teacher and would find my mind wandering to product ideas in class. I would say I was a good teacher and liked doing it, but it was clear that it wasn’t quite enough. In 2009 I had launched a headwear brand (Beardo®) and it was going quite well, but I had an urge to do something that would do good. So odd as it seems, the idea to create a company that ‘did only good’ came long before the actual product idea.I didn’t know what I was going to sell, only that the profits would go to help others. I was first inspired by a documentary I saw on TV in Australia about an eye doctor named Fred Hollows. He was an extremely selfless man who travelled to poor countries to give free eye treatments to communities in need. People would literally travel for days by foot to see him and he was able to give back sight to many people who had been afflicted by treatable issues like cataracts. That’s where it all started for me. It touched deeply and from there I decided to find a way so that I could give back something. From there I decided that creating a brand based around a high quality and sustainable product would be a great match. Because we were dealing with eyes and cataract issues, naturally sunglasses were an easy product choice, but as mentioned, I wanted it to be sustainable. There was no sense to me in creating a product to give back to those in need while burning oil and pollutants to make plastic products. That is when I started researching fibre and other materials to use. Wood was a good choice as I had seen others in Europe trying it, and by using only FSC certified wood and bamboo I could ensure that the materials were grown in registered plantations and sustainably sourced.Though sunglasses were a seasonal product for most of the World, in Australia it’s always sunny and I knew wood sunglasses were something that others would also be interested in. It seemed to me that the whole world was growing more aware of personal impacts on the environment and the timing was just right.Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing the product.DesignEarly prototypes were a bit hard, my friends and I were running some old CNC machines and they did the trick but we quickly discovered that without the right material and methods, the sunglasses would not be stable. Where plastic glasses can be molded and stamped out perfectly, the handcrafting method of wood sunglasses was a bit trickier and each pair was truly different. We discovered that wood truly does breathe and to create strong sunglasses we needed to cross layer the wood, in at least 4 layers. That would ensure that humidity levels in the areas that we shipped the glasses would have no effect. This was the moment we knew we had something special, that nobody had been able to perfect, but we did!WebsiteTrademarks and startup costs were fairly minimal and the real output was in time, research and trial and error. We setup a shop on Bigcartel, but pretty quickly realized it was limiting. There were a few bugs that kept popping up and our suggestions the Bigcartel for new apps and features that we saw on Shopify were not being responded to. Also we found that reporting sections could be much better to help keep us on track.Shopify seemed to be reading our mind with their improvements and new features so was a good choice and I am extremely happy with the look and feel of the site now.PackagingPackaging was another challenge early on.Everyone selling plastic glasses were using rectangular boxes. We wanted to be different, but we also wanted to rethink this method to ensure strong packaging for online sales. Afterall, you never know what happens behind the scenes at a mail processing facility!I was looking at all kinds of options and designs, but when I was at a local liquor store I had an ‘AHA!” moment. I saw that a lot of wine bottles were shipped in lightweight cardboard tubes. That was it! Exactly what we needed. Lightweight, sustainable and nearly crush-proof.Describe the process of launching the business.I had a bit of savings in the bank and financing was luckily not a big issue, it wasn’t an extreme amount of money, but I had about $15,000 to get things moving. It helps to have friends in the SEO and website field who were happy to pitch in and truly believed in the project.Due to the fact that GROWN® was the first wood sunglasses company in Australia, it was easy to appear in the top search spot for all of our keywords! There was simply no competition! Getting in early like this has also helped retain the #1 search position since launch. I am pretty sure that google looks at both our keywords and age of the site, which helps to keep us at the top.Launching any business is hard though and each one always brings unique hurdles. For us it was just a matter of reaching out to bloggers, news and media who would appreciate the focus on sustainability. Back then, there were a few hot words that everyone was throwing around like ‘Eco-friendly’ and we helped ourselves by integrating some of those trending words into our pitches.A few years after launch things were going pretty good and we were starting to make a name for ourselves. I had a 1962 Holden EK which I painted our logo on and that started getting alot of heads turning too! It was also great for photo shoots.Shark TankI had heard that the tv show ‘Shark Tank’ was filming for its first Australian season and thought that would be a great chance to get a partner and possibly go mainstream.I never got a call and thought they just weren’t interested, but about 3 days before they were set to film, one of the producers called. They said they would like to put GROWN® on a waiting list and that if interested, I would have to fly to Sydney at the drop of a hat sometime over the next 3 weeks.I said “absolutely’ and picked up my sandwich to continue eating lunch. Before I could take another bite, he called back and said I need to pack up and get to the airport!I knew this would be a great opportunity so I got moving! The pitch went great and in the end I accepted an offer from 2 Sharks (Naomi Simpson and John McGrath) who had ties to the World’s largest eyewear retail mogul, Luxottica.I was excited to get into stores like Sunglass Hut, and OPSM, but in the end their contact was simply not interested in getting into sustainable products and we mutually parted ways. That was a bit of a bummer, but the brand had exploded in Australia and thanks to the airing of the Shark Tank Episode, traffic spiked and we had over 24,000 visitors on the site during the first 20 minutes of the episode airing. GROWN® was very popular and the press couldn’t get enough of our story!Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers? We have played with running ads and retargeting and find that most of our customers are coming to us organically, we have the unique opportunity to keep ad costs minimal. This works just fine for us, so we keep focusing on SEO and allowing our potential customers to find us, rather than trying to throw out a wide net. That would cost a lot and let’s be honest, not everyone wants wood or bamboo sunglasses!Specifically, we make sure we know what people are searching for. In Australia for example, potential customers search for ‘wooden sunglasses’ while in North America ‘Wood Sunglasses’ is used as the search term much more. This kind of understanding of our keywords only comes with time and research, and it does change also! We apply the keywords to the site in an organic and non-forced way by integrating into descriptions and page names. While this may seem like SEO 101, there is an art to it and making sure you aren’t too heavy on your keywords or placements. We have 25k fans on Facebook and about 10k on Instagram (@growndesigns) and while the facebook and Instagram algorithm changes has affected every brand, we don’t let it get to us. We never boost posts as we find it’s not effective and we rarely run anything more than a retargeting ad.Our following was sitting around 10k on Instagram but after the airing of our shark tank appearance we gained a lot of new fans who were just interested in following our story. We aren’t focused on the fanbase to be honest. It’s an important method to reach your current fans and customers with paid ads, but by no means as important as it was 2-4 years ago. People are now bombarded with ads on social media and banner blindness is more prevalent than ever. Our goal is to retain existing customers and to make sure their shopping experience is a good one. Sunglasses are a funny item, one day they are on your table, the next they have vanished. Or as one of our customers discovered, running over them with a car isn’t a good idea! While we test our wood sunglasses heavily and even include a lens ball drop test, and a 20 foot free-fall onto concrete, running them over or sitting on them will usually end in tears! We know accidents happen and because we found ourselves giving our family and friend discount to customers who had accidents, I thought we should change the game. That’s why I started the ‘DAMN COVERAGE’ program. It means that no matter what you do, if your glasses break within a year we will give you 40% off a new pair. That is also on top of our regular manufacturers warranty.By doing this, we are happy that our customers are happy and their minds are left at ease if they have another accident! People really like that program and our customer retention has gone up significantly. How are you doing today and what does the future look like? The future looks good for GROWN, we are developing some new sunglasses lines. They will be sustainable of course, but these will not be wood. It’s all very top-secret right now as this has never been done before, but just know that good things are coming! We may revisit putting GROWN sunglasses back into retail shops. We had previously stopped putting them in stores as it opened up a whole different list of issues and was a lot harder to manage. We had our sunglasses in a few chains like Patagonia and Golden Breed, but pulled them out because we wanted to have the ability to offer exclusivity to a large distributor, and we simply couldn’t do that with hundreds of accounts already open.We don’t use Amazon yet but may be open to that in the future as well. We find that our direct and organic search traffic is quite steady, but Amazon may help put us in front of some new eyes too.We get roughly 10k unique visitors a month and a conversion rate of nearly 4%. Over 80% of cart adds end in a conversion, which is great to see, but it’s also telling us that customers know what they want, our site is laid out in an easy to navigate way and that Free Shipping is great for avoiding dropouts. Our goal for the site was to make it easy to navigate, and more importantly, easy to checkout.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous? It pays to get things right the first time and not rushing to market, though you don’t want to develop a fear of launching either. I’ve seen both! Make a plan when you first start out, it could be a full business plan or just a list of goals for this launch. I find this helps to look back on, to see how far you’ve come and to keep you on track.Be stubborn in your pursuits, but not so stubborn that you won’t humor the idea of changing paths if something isn’t likely to work.As for skills, I find that the basic skills are useful to monitor your sales, and make sure you are hitting targets. Also a working knowledge of design, photoshop and photography can be really useful, especially early on.Photoshoots are not cheap and by knowing what you want, it can help you negotiate a good shoot rate, and cut out a lot of wasted time and energy. Good photos are very important and I think having a strong idea about style will help solidify the brand image. What platform/tools do you use for your business? We use Shopify as mentioned, fulfilment is managed in house and we have no smaller items which warrants an upsell feature, though this is something I think is valuable if you can implement it.We use MailChimp for our emails as they are clean to design and affordable. We don’t discount our products often, maybe once a year, but when we do, our customers are very willing to buy. That is something I think a lot of brands do to much. If you discount your product a lot, you are basically saying that you have too much stock or you’ve overpriced to begin with. It can look terrible if not done right. What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?I really was inspired by Tim Ferris’ The 4 Hour Workweek. It’s got a not of insight and tricks of the trade. Some of the resources are a bit outdated that he mentions, but it’s very relatable for any entrepreneur and I find it opens my mind up to other possibilities and other ways of doing things. It gets you thinking a bit laterally.Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?If you are looking to start out online, you should remember that simple is better. When designing your website try to make it as clean and smooth as possible. That goes for product design, packaging and ads too. Simple is better and trial and error is the key, so keep testing. Some issues I see are things like spending too much money before you have even started selling.Take a chance and follow your gut. If you have an idea and you really do like it, chances are other out there will too. Go for it!Where can we go to learn more?growndesigns.comfacebook.com/growndesignsinstagram.com/growndesignsLiked this text interview? EU-funded POWERSTEP project looks at increasing net energy wastewater treatment using current technology
Credit: Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin gGmbH
SOURCE: CORDIS
BERLIN, GERMANY, NOV 28, 2018 — Municipal wastewater treatment in Europe consumes the energy equivalent of around two power stations per year – but could actually be generating the energy of 12. The EU-funded POWERSTEP project demonstrates how to make this more than a pipe dream.
[Native Advertisement]
Whilst much of the European wastewater treatment industry, with incremental energy efficiencies, is looking to achieve energy neutrality – where treatment generates the same amount of energy as it consumes – research indicates that the level of ambition could be much higher.
Studies point to the fact that processing sewage at treatment plants could already offer a new source of renewable energy, without compromising performance. In fact, it has been calculated that the potential chemical energy contained within European municipal wastewater is about 87 500 GWh per year.
The EU-funded POWERSTEP (Full scale demonstration of energy positive sewage treatment plant concepts towards market penetration) project set out to show just how it is possible to achieve energy-positive wastewater treatment plants without any other external renewable energy sources, by only using the power of sludge.
The overall POWERSTEP concept could be achieved, drawing on lessons from six full-scale case studies, spread across four countries, of each essential process step. Benefiting from the involvement of industry partners, the project was able to move to large scale demonstrations, paving the way to quick market roll-out and supporting the business plans of participating technology providers.
Integrating technologies POWERSTEP was set up to integrate the various individual technology assessments developed in the case studies pre-dating the project. This enabled the researchers to streamline whole processes such as treatment scheme modelling and design, global energy and heat management, carbon foot printing and integrated design options.
The key first stage of the POWERSTEP wastewater treatment plant concept for enabling energy-neutrality, or even energy-positivity, is carbon extraction. The extraction of carbon rich sludge (with an 80 percent extraction rate possible using POWERSTEP technology) allows a strong increase in biogas production.
In terms of improved treatment methods towards this end, the team investigated enhanced carbon extraction (pre-filtration), innovative nitrogen removal processes (such as advanced control, main-stream deammonification, duckweed reactor), power-to-gas (biogas upgrades) with a smart grid approach, heat-to-power concepts (thermoelectric recovery in combined heat and power units, steam rankine cycle, heat storage concepts) and innovative process water treatment (nitritation, membrane ammonia stripping).
As Dr. Christian Loderer explains, “Across the EU, wastewater energy self-supply – that is biogas production for electricity production – is at very different levels. In some countries such as the Netherlands and Germany, self-supply is high but not reaching the energy-neutrality of 100 percent (except in very few cases). Other countries, especially in Eastern Europe, have very low self-supply, missing 50-80 percent of the energy-potential of their wastewater.”
This highlights the fact that there are a number of barriers to be overcome. One is that biogas from water treatment is currently not yet accepted as a quality renewable energy, in comparison with biogas from energy crops. This is despite the negative side-effects of biogas from crops such as the creation of corn mono-cultures, excessive fertiliser application and nutrient release into the aquatic environment. Conversely, biogas from sewage sludge does not have these negative side-effects.
Contributing to the circular economy POWERSTEP, with its practical examples of how to best produce renewable energy from wastewater, significantly contributes to EU efforts towards transitioning to the circular economy, guided by ambitions for sustainability across society, the economy and the environment. This fact was recently underlined by the Director-General of the European Commission’s DG Energy, Dominique Ristori, who described POWERSTEP as, “extremely well placed when considering the priorities of the Energy Union.”
Furthermore, with the electricity to run treatment plants costing around EUR 2 billion per year, the savings could be pronounced. Dr. Loderer contends that if municipalities were to follow the POWERSTEP approach, EU citizens would also directly benefit with reduced energy bills.
“Energy-neutral wastewater treatment is not illusionary anymore, we have shown that it is absolutely possible now with commercially available state-of-the-art technologies,” as Dr. Loderer says. And with the Altenrhein Waste Water Treatment Plant in Switzerland now equipped with a full-scale Nitrogen-recovery unit, which had been studied in detail by the POWERSTEP partner EAWAG, momentum is literally building.
Looking to the future Dr. Loderer adds that, “Energy-positive treatment, up to 140-170 percent, is also possible but still requires more work on technology reliability and economic viability, for full-scale systems to be rolled out.”
In the immediate term, as a proof of concept showing that the technology works for the small as well as large scale, the team is in discussions with key industrial partners from the project on how to establish a network of small wastewater treatment plants which will partly implement POWERSTEP approaches.

German Company Bayer Approved to Buy Out Monsanto: “A Marriage Made in Hell”?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by Paul Fassa Health Impact News
The recent Monsanto-Bayer merger has been approved by both American and European continent authorities, merging two of the world's top seed biotech companies and producers of genetically modified seeds.
Bayer, a company based out of Germany, is a name most often associated with aspirin in the United States and around the world. But even before this merger, they already hold a huge market share of seed production.
Tumblr media
Bayer is somewhat constrained in developing their GMO products, as Germany bans the cultivation of GMO crops. Most of Bayer's GMO development is done in the USA, and by purchasing Monsanto, they will become, by far, the largest GMO company in the world.
This has prompted some to refer to the Bayer-Monsanto merger as “A Marriage Made in Hell.”
This Merger Has Been Called “A Marriage Made in Hell” by Environmental Activists
Monsanto has a history of being accused of toxic destruction, lies and cover-ups, threats and harassment against farmers falsely accused of violating patent rights, and patenting non-GMO seeds that they have simply purchased, all as part of an alleged effort to literally own the world's food supply.
Monsanto was involved with spreading toxic PCBs, until banned by governments, and causing illness, death, and deformed births with agent orange sprayed during the Vietnam war, which they refused to take responsibility for on behalf of Vietnam vets, forcing the U.S. Veterans Administration to eventually create a fund to compensate veterans damaged by agent orange. (Source)
Monsanto is also responsible for the world's most widely sprayed herbicide, glyphosate. Glyphosate is currently on trial around the world for causing various diseases, and in a case in the U.S. they are being accused of fraud, and covering up harmful studies suppressed for years that links glyphosate to cancer. (Source.)
Bayer is primarily a pharmaceutical company, the largest class of criminal organizations in the world in terms of fraud lawsuits filed and settled. (Source.)
When Bayer tried to jump into the lucrative cholesterol-lowering statin drug market, their product, Baycol, was ineffective and caused serious side effects prompting a whistleblower lawsuit from a former employee. (Source.)
According to DrugWatch.com, Bayer has:
faced its share of litigation and scandal from product liability suits, false marketing claims, Nazi ties and selling HIV-tainted blood products to hemophiliacs in the 1980s.
Public Perceptions more Friendly Toward the Bayer Brandname than the Monsanto Brandname
Bayer's main international headquarters is in Leverkusen, Germany. German law requires that shareholders vote on such mergers through acquisition simply because the standard acquisition merger may result in splitting or devaluing shares.
Some analysts think Bayer CEO Warner Baumann went to raising capital for a full cash purchase of Monsanto with loans to avoid that shareholder vote. The public perception of Monsanto is worse than that of Bayer.
They also mention how borrowed capital is now relatively cheap. This approach does not require a shareholder vote that could spoil the deal. (Source)
The Monsanto brand will be gone. The name of the new company's agrichemical and seed division goes to the buyer and becomes Bayer Crop Science according to CEO Warner Bauman.
Bayer's business success has mostly relied on its pharmaceutical production, which will retain the Bayer brand name. As is typical of most pharmaceutical companies, its pharmaceutical history has its dark moments with serious adverse effects and deaths.
But the negative public perception of Bayer's agrichemical business is not as widespread and dark as Monsanto's.
So now Bayer can assume a more wholesome position than Monsanto's reputation. CEO Bauman has promised to not use Bayer's better EU perception for pushing GMO products on Europeans. But those opposing the merger point out this would now grant one chemical company more control of the food supply.
Anti-GMO and environmental activists seriously doubt Bauman's statements are anything more than public relations double-speak. The fact that so many have opposed this merger in Europe with 50,000 emails and 5,000 letters is testimony for these agrichemical giants ability to sway governmental decisions in their favor. (Source)
In order to appease governmental monopoly concerns on both sides of the Atlantic for final acquisition approval, Bayer has been forced to divest much its own vegetable seed and agrichemical division by selling most of its agrichemical and seed assets to German-based BASF, a multi-national chemical manufacturer that also sells pesticides.
But all the Monsanto products remain, including Roundup and Roundup Ready seeds, terminator seeds, and crop plants with their own built-in insecticides. Bayer is retaining all of its prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical production business and some of its agribusiness they were not forced to sell to BASF as part of the agreement with EU officials to allow the merger purchase.
While there has been some speculation about why Bayer is buying out Monsanto, there have been other more chemical manufacturing company mergers happening with less fanfare lately. Dow Chemical and Dupont merged last September to become DowDupont. Earlier this year (2018) ChemChina and Syngenta merged to become ChemChina-Syngenta. These three mergers will now control most of the world's seed supply.
Tumblr media
There have also been other buyouts and mergers among the major chemical companies' subsidiaries and other smaller companies. It's the trend, a trend that's creating monolith chemical corporations that can influence governments, research centers, and the media even more than ever.
Monsanto Brandname Gone – But Not Its Products
On the public relations front, the most conspicuously disliked Monsanto brand will soon be no longer visible. Syngenta has also become less conspicuous with its merger to ChemChina after creating flaps among it tainted U.S. organic and conventional farmers crops from their unregistered, closely-located, GMO testing fields.
Ironically, there were also heavy losses sustained by USA farmers from the losses of corn exports to China after that nation canceled all corn from the U.S. due to Syngenta's release of an unapproved GMO strain into Chinese ports. (Source)
What else concerns anti-GMO and pesticide activists is the looming possibility of newer pesticides, since more and more glyphosate-resistant weed growth has occurred over the years. Even worse is the prospect of these poisonous chemical companies controlling the world's food supply by controlling seeds that aren't even genetically modified.
Monsanto Merger with Bayer: 3 Companies Will Soon Control 60% of World's Seed Supply
Weed resistance to glyphosate, over the years, has been leaving many Monsanto-contracted farmers with the dilemma of having to buy GMO Roundup Ready seeds that are modified to accept Roundup's glyphosate (and other ingredients). In addition to being contractually-bound for purchasing those seeds annually, they are bound to purchase Roundup as the herbicide.
But the continuing rise of weed resistance forces them to buy more herbicides other than Roundup, while continuing their contractual obligation of buying Roundup Ready seeds. It's an upwardly expanding expense cycle.
This and other strong-arm tactics Monsanto has used to enforce its contracts and protect its patented seeds have tainted the Monsanto brand among many farmers.
Financially, Monsanto has run into regional legal resistance to its latest dicamba herbicide XtendiMax while genetically modifying seeds for crops that are dicamba-resistant.
Farmers concerns and complaints about dicamba's tendency to vaporize in warm weather and drift as a gas, to adversely affect plant crops cultivated by conventional and organic farmers in a regional proximity, has forced Arkansas and Missouri to ban its use in 2017.
A farmer class action suit is filed in the Missouri federal court alleging Monsanto knowingly created this drift situation to force farmers into contracting for dicamba-resistant seeds to avoid the catastrophe of losing their crops from dicamba drift. Lead class action suit plaintiff, Forest River Farms, claims:
“Monsanto's monopolization and attempted monopolization of the seeds market stymies competition, hurts producers, and harms the public at large, [invites into the class action] all individuals and entities who directly purchased seeds containing Monsanto's dicamba-resistant trait [to avoid dicamba drift].” (Source)
youtube
Monsanto is also under more financial duress as increasing individual, class action, and local governments have filed lawsuits for health damages against Monsanto for Roundup ever since its main active ingredient, glyphosate, was declared a probable carcinogenic by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
New “Digital Farming” Technology Will Create More Control Over the World's Food Supply
Now we are faced with double trouble with this merger. The crown jewel of Monsanto's satellite farmer network has become part of Bayer's acquisition. It could be considered the Big Brother of Agriculture, as it becomes a tool for farmers under seed and pesticide contracts with the newly-merged conglomerate. This system is being referred to as “digital farming”.
Ostensibly touted to be a boon for farmers under contract with Monsanto, now Bayer Crop Science, digital farming centralizes food production even more. Centralization always makes it easier for the few to control governments, regulatory agencies, and the media for their exclusive agendas.
Now we have doubly centralized trouble with this latest merger of Monsanto and Bayer that purposely wants to crowd out organic farming with its ownership of so many crop seeds.
The toxic chemicals these merged companies produce find their way into human bodies at the top of the food chain. Banning GMO agriculture is the only way to prevent a complete takeover of the world's food supply by companies who profit from producing poisons.
Let's hope this trend takes a turn in the other direction before it's too late..
