Your character was close to his. They were lovers. So you had to spend a fair amount of time with him consequently. Enzo was a humble and kind man. He was so random and yet so peaceful. Which facilitated the connection.
In the beginning, you thought it was weird that the production of The Society of the Snow had decided to keep more than 50% of the cast for a short film that would promote the movie and create speculation. You didn’t say no because it meant flying to the shores of Spain and enjoying more time with the boys.
So you give in, you take the director’s advice to stick to Enzo and build a connection.
He’s older than you, more mature, more experienced in many ways, but yet you seem to be able to make him laugh.
“Tenés que estar bromeando,” he says laughing.
“No es joda, de verdad me multaron y se hizo un desmadre” you explain giggling, drinking at your water bottle.
Both of you are having a little moment on the beach. It was warm, and it was a free day. The rest of the boys decided to spend the afternoon playing video games and you were not willing to melt watching a TV.
“Recuérdame jamás salir con vos” you roll your eyes.
“Ay vete a la verga, todos saben que soy el alma de las reuniones y fiestas” he shrugged, eating from his sandwich and smiling.
“Si, tenés razón quizá”
“¿Quizá? No, no mientas, Enzo” finally, he laughs loudly.
“Bueno está bien, lo acepto”
“Así me gusta, obediente, mi niño” he blushed. And it made you blush too.
The sound of the waves swiftly colliding makes you feel at peace. It’s been great so far. Filming an action short film, playing the damsel in danger who turns out to be the villain, and having lots of fun with your workmates.
“¿No extrañas tu hogar?” he asks, and you sigh, looking at the sea.
“Trato de no pensar en eso. Dependo mucho de casa, de mi familia. Me cuesta el cambio, pero me adapto rápido” he nods, smiling, and you hate to admit you like how good he looks with his hair slightly shorter.
“Eso es bueno… adaptarse. Aunque cueste… creo que al final es bonito el cambio” you start laughing. Because you remember his Instagram captions and the pauses he always wrote. But he’s think that you are also very pretty, not only the change he mentioned before.
“Si, es bonito el cambio” You keep laughing, and he shouldn’t be smiling so much at you. But you were so funny, you always had something to share and talk about. Enzo was very close about sharing things about him. But with you, he could make an excuse.
So you also stare at him, and you feel your heart start beating faster.
You can’t fall in love with him. But you’re miserably failing.
You look at yourself in the mirror. Your character had a disguise moment, where she had to pretend to be a dancer to get information. So there you are in a bejeweled attire with feathers.
“No mames, qué buena me veo,” you say laughing. Loving how your waist looks and how your hair looks so fluffy. The costume department did an outstanding job of making you look hot
“Como que si… ¿eh?” The annoying twink of Juani had to be there.
“Ponme la de perdió este culo de la Bad Gyal, por favor” Juani starts cackling, already filming you for some random tweet.
“Pero si vos tuviste un ex hace siglos, ya no queda” you roll your eyes, checking on the glitter decorating your eyes.
“Ay, pero no por eso, Juani. Nomás por mamona lo digo” There’s a knock on the door and you turn to see who’s standing there.
“¿Y esa diosa?” You blush, smiling at Fran being the person who knocked at the door before.
“¿Dónde que no la veo?” Of course, Juani had to be an idiot and ruin the moment, but soon he blows you a kiss.
“No es cierto, linda” You roll your eyes and turn back to see Fran giggling. You give him a sweet smile and scratch the back of your neck. He helps you get your robe so you won’t have to cross the whole building with your exhibitionist outfit.
“Tenés escena conmigo” Fran says offering you his arm, which you gladly take.
“Adiós, naco perdedor,” you say to Juani, who starts laughing loudly. As you start walking with Fran across the hallways of the building, you start feeling your heart beat faster. You were going to have a heated scene with Enzo, which made you cringe a lot. First, you appear with Fran’s character in the club which ends with your character tangling up with Enzo.
“¿Nerviosa?” You shake your head, sighing.
“I don’t know…Digo, no lo sé” he nods, as you two walk out of the building to get going towards the set. The shores of Spain were beautiful, Cádiz was warm and it suited your overwhelmed mood.
“Va a estar bien. Que igual si no, nos vamos a dar la vuelta en la noche” that immediately makes you smile. You nod, hugging him.
“Eso me encantaría mucho, Fran” You are on set now. There’s no way back, and when you turn back, you see Enzo, and he’s already looking at you.
You blush, and offer him a little smile before turning away so rapidly. The whole action is watched by Fran and he has his own opinion.
“Has pasado mucho tiempo con Enzo…¿No crees?” You shrug, greeting the makeup staff who are going to retouch your look.
“Teníamos que conocernos a fondo para que esto resultara” he nods again.
“Creo que si se ha dado lo de la conexión” it was weird, because you knew it was true. you had developed a special connection with Enzo. Hours spent talking and having long walks across the beach. The days you decided to cook for the boys and he always was the first to arrive and try to help you set up everything.
“Si se diera la oportunidad… ¿Te quedarías con él?” His question makes you wonder. It took you aback, and while you have full trust in Fran, you don’t know what to answer.
Well, you do know what to answer… but you are afraid to admit it.
“Si… aveces siento que si es con él, Fran. Me hace muy feliz… pero, no creo que Enzo sienta lo mismo” you confess. He smiles, taking your hand.
“Tenés que decirle. Se llevan un par de años, pero… se ven tan bien juntos” he says looking at Enzo.
“De verdad… ¿Tú crees?”
“Es que ve cómo te mira, y/n” In disguise, you turn to your side, and you confirm Enzo is still looking at you.
“Decíle… anda” you smile, a warm feeling growing in your heart. You feel loved, you feel like it might be meant to be. So you plan something.
“Hay que hacer una carnita asada” Fran laughs.
“Pero vos le pones mucho al asado. Jamás había visto uno así” you laugh. Since your type of asado was a northern Mexican carne asada. They all believed it was a great change of style of cooking.
“No lo niegues, Fran. Mi asado es grandioso” he tries to deny it but at the end, he smiles nodding.
“Ey… ¿estás lista, linda?” Enzo asks, appearing with a gorgeous smile. He was wearing a dark suit, his hair looked amazing, very hot.
“Creo que si…” you let him know. After some brief exchange of words with the production, you take your position along with Fran to start filming. And you never miss the way Enzo was looking at you.
Maybe he felt the same.
You started the carne asada before taking a shower and getting ready. Now, everything was ready. The big patio that connected the apartment complex was decorated with a table that Juani and Matias helped you set, with chips, salsas, guacamole, beans, and agua de tamarindo that you had to mix with some alcohol.
Everyone is having fun, and you have helped to serve the food to everyone with Blas. It seemed to be going well, you have a sundress and sneakers on the feeling of the alcohol has you tipsy and you can’t wait to make yourself some tacos with the asado.
You feel someone hug you from behind, and when you turn back, you end up caged around Enzo’s arms.
“Hey… you made it!” You cheer after seeing him, trying to ignore the blush on your cheeks. You hoped nobody had seen the interaction. Or else they would start with cheesy rumors.
“No me lo perdería” you smile, offering him a glass of agua de tamarindo.
“Hice verduras asadas y queso fundido para ti” he wanted to hug you so tightly again after hearing you say that. You had thought about him and cooked specifically for him. Enzo had been in some dilemma, where he questioned if you could be the one. Although, he still had many obstacles to get to you. And he didn’t know yet that those obstacles would draw him apart from you.
“Ehh.. y/n linda, ¿hay más mas cubiertos?” Agustin asks you suddenly.
“Creo que hay servilletas y popotes en el cuarto de lavar. Voy a ver” you say laughing.
“Te acompaño…” says Enzo, which makes you blush again.
“Gracias…”
Both of you walk inside the building, and the laundry room is very near, so in less than a minute he opens the door to let you in. With the distance, you finally are able to distinguish the song playing on the patio. You hum along trátame suavemente playing in the background.
No quiero soñar mil veces las mismas cosas
Ni contemplarlas sabiamente
Quiero que me trates suavemente
Enzo can’t help but think you look so adorable. He remembers the way he had to touch you for the scene earlier. Half of him hated himself for feeling that way about you, and the other half questioned if it could possibly be correct.
“Enzo… no alcanzo las servilletas” When he turns back, he sees you trying to climb the washing machine to open the drawers.
“Así no, chiquita.” He laughs and stops you, making you sit on top of the washing machine while he grabs the bag with napkins and straws inside.
“Ay, si… humillame pues” you complain crossing your arms. He drops de bag beside you, and then gives you a silly smirk, which makes you laugh.
“Nada de eso, sis vos sos bien linda así” You cross your arms, avoiding his eyes. This was the closest you’d been around him. It feels alright like having him close to you was normal. Making you realize, you could get used to his aura being so damn close to you.
I like him…
“¿Tú crees?” You let yourself play a little dumb, pretending innocence. And you have the excuse of being under the effects of alcohol.
Te comportas de acuerdo
Con lo que te dicta, cada momento
Y esta inconstancia, no es algo heroico
Es más bien algo enfermo…
you keep humming the song as you try to keep the conversation normal with the man.
“Si… muy linda vos” The outrageous side of you let your arms get tangled around his neck. And it caught him by surprise but he let himself feel the moment. He shyly placed his hands on your hips, and you squirmed.
“¿Qué estamos haciendo?” He asks, accepting that he was getting lost in your eyes.
“No sé” you admit, feeling how his chest was touching yours.
“Bésame, Enzo…” you close your eyes, and seconds later, you know he’s kissing you. Your fingers trace his hair and it’s so soft that it makes him groan in pleasure.
You let his hands caress the plush skin of your hips and legs as you keep pushing him towards you.
This is it, you are falling in love with him.
It’s one of the last days of filming, but for the past two weeks, you have been spending a sickening time with Enzo. He spent two nights with you, he even agreed to go out to the city just for you. You could say the feeling of falling in love was growing very rapidly.
He made you feel safe and every smile he offered was enough relief for your days. He held your hand once while walking through the crowded streets to not lose you and it felt right.
And you hadn’t seen him in two days because he had different scenes to film.
Until now, where your character holds hands with him as she confesses she’s the villain. You feel the air shift, you feel the distance he’s making and you wonder if it was because of the scene or if he was actually being cold to you. The setting is on one hill with a gorgeous sunset in the background, making the scene very dramatic and tragic for the romantic partners.
“Dime que me amas y me entregaré. Por favor…” your character says. Enzo looks at you, and the look he exchanges with you is sad, making you confused on camera.
“Yo te amo, pero sabes que no podemos estar juntos” his character had to say. And for some reason, you felt like Enzo was actually saying that to you.
“CORTE!” The director said. Everything keeps going on. But for you time stops. You look at him, hoping to find some sense of tranquility. That nothing had changed.
Slowly, Enzo dropped your hand and after a brief look… he walked away.
You spend the afternoon collecting shells. You are confused and slightly sad because filming is coming to an end. You don’t know if Enzo actually wanted to give it a try on distance. Because after the kiss on the carne asada, none of you had given status to the relationship.
But it’s not necessary to keep thinking about it, because you see him walking towards you, and your immediate reaction is to offer him a smile.
“Ey.. te perdiste todo el día” you try to sound calm.
“Estaba ocupado.” He says with both hands inside his hoodie. His hair looks disheveled and he seems tired.
“Entiendo…”
“Volví a hablar con ella” There’s no need to address it, you know who he meant, his ex-girlfriend. You don’t say a word, opting for hearing him before talking.
“Hablamos mucho. Quedamos de vernos cuando vuelva a Uruguay” you gulp, each word hurting you more.
“¿Entendés, verdad? Vos sos más joven que yo, somos de lados muy distintos… no iba a funcionar” your eyes get watered immediately. Rage invading you and sadness flooding you.
“Decí algo, por favor. No quiero lastimarte…” you laugh, shaking your head. There are some seconds of silence. You need to choose the right words.
“Alguna vez me miraste, sonreíste y pensaste que… tal vez, ¿tal vez pudo haber sido conmigo?” He sighs, looking away, at the sea.
The longer he remains quiet, the more you have the answer. He never felt the same as you, but he never tried to stop you either. He played along.
You just start walking away, hand on an extremely tight grip, the shells and sand irritating the skin on your palm.
“Nunca quise hacerte daño” he yells as you have walked a fair amount of steps away.
“Si nunca sentiste algo por mi, nunca debiste haberme dejado encariñarme contigo.” He lowers his gaze and you feel even more enraged.
“No puedes ni levantar la cabeza. Fucking shame on you…” you spit with disappointment.
“Y jamás debí haber aceptado conocerte tanto” you finally say. Walking away at once and fighting the tears as you try to pass the boys who are playing video games again.
“Ey… ¿estás bien?” Juani asks and you nod, but he follows and once his hand touches yours, you can’t help but collide on his chest, letting the tears fly away silently. Juani doesn’t say anything, not yet, he just hugs you tightly.
The next afternoon, Enzo goes to find you in your room, but he’s surprised by the fact that you’re gone.
“Filmó su última escena y se ha ido a casa” Santi told him.
“¿Cómo?” Enzo is in shock, he just sighs, closing his eyes.
“Se quiso ir antes…”
“Le dijo… muchas cosas a Juani y a Fran” Santi adds, and Enzo can tell what had happened. And of course, he accepted being guilty.
“Necesito hablar con ellos” and with that he lefts.
But the talk didn’t help a lot. He just realized you were gone by the time he was able to be alone in his room again. Enzo was confused and tired and he also just wanted to go home. But as he understands you’re gone and he won’t see you in a long time, he feels a little lost. And empty…
A lot of things change. You grow, you forget, you change. You go back to your normal life, college goes great, and everything is normal until it’s time to give a promotion to the movie and the short film. You kept a lot of contact with Fran, Juani, and Matias, but it won't be the same as if you didn't end up on good terms with Enzo.
About him, you learned he didn't make it with his ex-girlfriend. He was single and apparently good. You don’t hate him, but there’s a lot of resentment. And as the premiere was around the corner, rumors had appeared on the surface of social media. Rumors of you and Enzo, and all the drama. You didn't pay attention to those, but you were expecting at least one question regarding the issue in the upcoming interviews.
You were offered to be dressed by some perfect designer who had similar ideas to you. He made a silk dress in a champagne color for you. With tiny crystal beats and a gorgeous skirt. You loved the dress, it suited you so well too.
So at the beginning of the night, you don’t think about anything but making a good impression on the cameras. All that mattered was the promotion of the movie.
As soon as you arrive at the gala, you start shivering because of your nervousness about seeing your friends again. You were the last one to arrive so you weren’t able to greet them.
And that’s when you see Enzo. He seems fine, in a completely dark suit and his stupid perfect hair. When he finds your sweet eyes, his heart beats faster, you look so perfect. Your hair, your brows, your eyes, the pink lips, everything seemed to make you look so perfect. And he can tell you look older, your childish and plush cheeks are gone, and your short hair too. He remembers all the good memories he made with you and he feels sadness taking over. He missed you so bad after going back home. And he wasn’t able to hear anything from you because he didn’t dare to ask Juani or Fran for example.
“Te ves preciosa,” says Agustin hugging you. You smile at him and thank him. All the boys want to greet you and all is being recorded. The only one you don’t greet is Enzo, who stays afar posing for the cameras. Until most of the photographers keep asking to take a picture of you and the man who broke your heart.
“No te acerques si no querés” Juani advises you, whispering in your eye. You sigh, looking at how Enzo is getting closer.
“Creo que ya no tengo de otra…” you whisper back, pretending to have a big and honest smile on your face.
Enzo exchanged looks with you, and he was able to sense how awkward you were feeling, which didn’t soothe him. So he pretended to place his hand on your back but he never touched you, and you didn’t even glare at him a second the flash hit your face. You ignore the growing pain of having him so close but being so far away at the same time.
They want you to do a little interview with him. So you get close to the cameras to answer some questions.
“Entonces y/n… ¿qué crees que fue lo mejor de grabar el largometraje?” You giggle, easy question.
“Definitivamente que pude volver a estar con los chicos. Fue mas sencillo y podíamos divertirnos con mayor libertad” the woman nods, assuring that she was recording your answer.
“Y Enzo… ¿fue difícil grabar estando en una relación?” You know he didn’t like the question, and you suddenly felt worse or awkward.
“Eh… no. La verdad es que llevo rato soltero.”
“¿Hay alguien que podría llevarte a dejar de estarlo?” He laughs and you just want to run away. You really don’t care, and you don’t want to know the answer.
“Hubo una chica con la que estuve en Cádiz hace casi dos años. Nos la pasamos muy bien y las cosas no se dieron, mi culpa. Me gustaría hacer las cosas bien por ella…” it must be you, and it can’t be. You don’t believe him, you just turn around and look for any of your friends. So when you see Matias making you a sign to join im, you take the opportunity.
“Me llaman por acá. Un gusto, y gracias…” you thank the woman with a smile and leave quickly, knowing Enzo has eyes set on your back.
You won’t cry, but you can’t help but feel so weird about everything. You had been great without him. Seeing him back made you go back to that summer in Cadiz and how great it was your life at the time. But that is gone, and so are the memories you made with him.
Everyone knows you disappeared after the projection of the movie and the short film. You don’t like feeling his eyes across the dark room. You can’t rest knowing the party that followed the projections was going to be very painful. By showing clips of the behind-the-scenes, everyone saying words to each other. You are not in the mood for that. And it’s all because of him. Because he had to be an asshole and not think clearly. You couldn’t even call yourself stupid because he gave all the green lights that actually looked like green flags.
And as you question everything in pajamas, looking at the open balcony of your hotel room with red swollen eyes when there’s a knock.
You drag your feet to the door, and once you open it, he’s there.
The suit is still on, but he has a specific gesture on his face.
People often said looks said more than words, and Enzo was the perfect example.
You tilt your head, reading his face. His face says that he’s sorry, he feels sad, and he’s desperate to have you back. And he frowns after seeing your sad face. Your red eyes and look that said how confused and hurt you were.
So both of you stare for a little longer, literally glorifying each other faces. Remembering the soft touches, all the things you talked together. How happy you made each other.
“Podemos arreglarlo…” he finally says.
And slowly both of you smile, sad and broken smiles.
You open your arms and he immediately goes to hug you. His hands find their way to your waist, his face hidden in the warmth of your neck.
“Tú recuerdo jamás me dejó” and you smile again, closing your eyes, letting your face get comfortable on his chest, letting more tears fall.
“Si es contigo…Siempre fue contigo” he admits, knowing he’ll never let you go again.
____________________________________________________________________________
I already have an idea for a new fic with Enzo that it’s going to be AHHHHH. hint? Everyone loves you, that’s it

Omg omg could we get a story about how Miguel and wife/reader first meet? Like maybe they both meet from high school or reader was watching Miguel play soccer with his friends in college!
Had this one sitting for a while cause I didn't know what to do. UNTIL, hehehe >:D Carneadas. (Mexican style bbq)
Pt 2
If someone would have told you that you'd find your future husband in a friend's of a friend gathering you would've just laugh it off.
Jessica and you were fresh out of college, and to celebrate it, she decided to take you on one of her outings. A suburban area, nice houses loitering around in every corner your eyes turned, a lot of parked cars and of course, people that clumped in the decored entrance.
Lights and loud spanish music were just the spark to create ambience, the true star of the night was brewing in two enormous pots. The smell of food lingered in the air the more Jessica pulled you within the crowd.
"Remind me again, who are these people?
"Friends of friends. Never been in a carneada before?"
"My family does these once a month, just don't get why is there so much people."
"We'll, everyone's for the food, so... yeah. Just have fun."
You greeted the people as your feet took you to the drinks. Beers, sodas, more beers and pitchers of horchata, Jamaica, and some lemonades were placed on the coolers.
Reaching for the horchata, you grabbed a plastic vase and poured yourself some. To your surprise a man, the biggest one you have seen in your whole life, stood next to you, his eyes focused in the different brands of canned beers submerged in ice.
Your hand reached for a Modelo and popped the lid out with one of your rings. The man eyed you with amusement. He grabbed a Corona but frowned upon not finding the lid popper. He was going to take the lid to his mouth and you gasped
"Wait! No. Don't do that."
"I can open them, thanks" His voice deep.
"Mano, si que eres terco." (Man, you're stubborn)
He blinked at your voice and handed you the beer, you just popped the lid with the corner of the table.
"Don't mess up your teeth."
The man seized you, a lax smile on his lips.
"Too late for that" He smirked, revealing a longer than average canine. Your eyes went up in surprise.
"Oh."
The music changed and you took the drinks to then sit next to Jessica. You gave her the beer. Some people danced, others were lining up for the food.
"What were you doing?"
"Just met Dracula."
Jessica tilted her head in confusion and laughed.
"I'm not joking, the man had big ass fangs."
"Didn't know you were into that sort of things, but we don't kink shame."
"Jessica!" Her boyfriend had swooped off her feet and took her to dance. Great. You were ditched.
At first, you refused to dance, but as the music changed, your feet were itching to do so. Another man was brave enough to approach you and ask you for a dance, then another, you danced with Jess and clapped once the song was over.
You went to the drinks again to refresh yourself, this time you got a Corona and took a long swig of it.
"My, that was so fun."
-----
Even though your evening had been fun, you needed a break from the party. The host, Peter, seemed like a very easygoing person. Jessica was his acquaintance.
You went to the kitchen in search for another glass of horchata, even though beers were tasty and reminded you a bit of home, the horchata was simply delicious. There was no glasses, but spotted a pack of plastic cups ontop. Problem, was that the fridge was a bit too high for your likings.
You pulled up a chair, ready to climb ontop when the same large hand reached over and pulled a couple of cups down.
"Thanks."
"Who said it was for you?"
The man from before teased, you rolled your eyes and climbed ontop of the chair to reach for a cup yourself.
"No te vayas a caer, Pitufina." (You'll fall down, Smurfette)
"Cállate, Drácula." (Shut up)
He shook his head with a chuckle.
What a douche
"Lemme"
"No, I can do it."
"Te vas a caer con esos tacones." (You'll fall down with those heels)
"It's not a big deal!"
"-Ta madre, lo que tienes de bonita lo tienes de terca. Bájate" (Your stubbornness only matches your beauty. Get down.)
Your lips pouted, a mild flush sweeping your face. You took his hand and he helped you to get down the chair. Even in your heels, you still looked small.
"You are supposed to say thanks."
"For doing something myself?"
His smile went a bit wider.
"Food's done. Let's go"
"Wait." You poured another glass of horchata
"Didn't know my recipe would have a fan."
"Meh, my mom's better"
Your smile smug as he deadpanned.
"Just bit more of sugar. And blend the rice well. There are some little pieces of it in the bottom."
He was about to protest when a man, similar to him spoke. His brother you supposed.
"Miguel?" He looked between him and you, "Ya está la carne, hay que servir" (Meats done, we gotta serve up)
He then left
"Wanna go critique my food as well?"
"Ohh, I'd love to yeah."
----
He'd serve the food along his younger brother, you were one of the last ones in getting your portion. He prepped your plate with a little more care, the Birria's consomé (broth) in a side, another little container for the sauces and of course two big loaded quesabirrias and a bunch of different roasted meats.
"Hope it's from your likings, chaparrita"
"We'll see about that, Dracula" You smirked and took the dish, fingers brushing for a moment.
"Provecho" (Bon Appetite)
------
"How was it?" He sat across you once more upon seeing you alone. Jessica had ditched you again. Oh she so owed you this one.
You shrugged with a smile.
"Good? Bad?"
"I'm teasing. It was great. Specially the broth. Thanks for cooking."
He took a swig of his beer.
"De nada." (You're welcome)
"Miguel! Hay que limpiar" (We gotta clean up)
Gabriel's voice boomed behind him.
"Need help with it?"
His eyes stared at you for a moment and pursed his lips, trying to hide a smile.
"Si quieres" (If you want to.)
-----
You had waved your goodbyes and hopped in with Jessica in her car and left. He just then realized that he never asked your name.
Dumbass.

kynesgrove, morthal, and throat of the world for the skyrim asks!
Oooh! Very quick - thank you dearly!
Kynesgrove; What is your favorite non-major city/town/settlement? Oh this is is a kinda tricky one. I'm going to assume this rules out all the hold capitals - even the really smol ones like Morthal - and Raven Rock. Hmmm... I think ultimately it comes down to either Deepwood Vale or Narzulbur. There is something incredibly captivating about the latter - how it clings to the mountainside and is divided between two parts with a narrow rope bridge connecting them. IDK. Its just always been my favorite orc stronghold in Skyrim from an aesthetic standpoint by a wide margin. Deepwood Vale, though. That might be a weirder choice. Like, ok, I get that it technically isnt even a proper settlement (in game). Its a dungeon. But for the Reachfolk living there it really must be a fairly major settlement. I'm gonna use that as my excuse anyway. Its just... ok so very few skyrim dungeons really wow me but Deepwood Vale has gotta be one of my favorite. The progression through it, the feeling of it being a real town to the Reachmen. A settlement and not just a camp. All the intriguing ties it has to cut Reachmen content and then how it was reused as the mainland base of the Icereach clan in ESO. I've just always loved it. I'm a sucker for when TES games jump a small, enclosed, sub-worldspace on you like Deepwood Vale, Blackreach, or the Forgotten Vale. PLUS!! It was actually the dungeon that first sparked my consistant love for the Reachfolk, so it has that going for it!!
Morthal; Do you enjoy exploring dungeons and ruins? Why or why not? Sadly not particularly. IDK, by and large dungeon design never really seems to have been a Bethesda speciality. They do really blend together. Doesnt help that I am so familiar with... well... ALL of Skyrim these days that I can navigate most places with my eyes half shut. That said, when Skyrim hits, it HITS. Definitely has some really good high points and those stick with me. *Cough* See Above *Cough* These days I actually take most of my joy in playing Skyrim more like a weird TES lifesim game. I vibe in towns, hone non-combat skills, run small errands and jobs that don't even touch combat, and just sorta... well... live life like a non-adventurer. Its a weird AF way to approach it, I know, but it sparks immense joy for me. ESPECIALLY with my well honed mod order!
The Throat of the World; How do you feel about "Season Unending"? See this is an especially difficult one because I don't really play Dragonborn characters xD. But ah, well. Ok. From the times I have played through it and conceptually. I really enjoy it in idea, though the execution is REALLY clumsy. Honestly I would adore a peace council option somehow as a side path in the Civil War entirely independent of the main quest. Just sorta jam it in there, somehow. Cant hate it too much, though, since its one of the necessary parts of the (very fiddly) method of entirely ridding Markarth of those dang unkillable Silver Bloods!!

Hiii can I get 3,14,15, and 16 for Felria and 1, 17, and 18 for Valkya? And 19 for both if you're feeling up to it? <3
3. How did you choose their name?
I have noooo remembrance I just. Thought it sounded pretty? I think it was originally something much longer but I cut it down to be simpler and suit her better
14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
-she is very friendly and easy to like, able to get along with anyone by changing her performance to suit them. Most only know her as a sweet and giggly girl, not too bright but kind and gentle.
-Shes a self serving, manipulative and sadistic actress who delights in deceiving others, more than anything relishes the look of betrayal and realization when someone realizes the giggly little simple minded girl is the one flaying the skin from their bones.
15. What is something about your OC can make you laugh?
Imagining martin septims reaction when they realize why she was arrested (dead body bangin). She has an entire sob story planned on how she was a “poor orphan child who had to kill off bandits to save her sick mother and got caught by the guard who roughed her up and stole her family heirloo-” and hes like “so i heard you had relations with a corpse :/” and shes like “ :/ >:/ u ruined the fun”
 16. What is something about your OC can make you cry?
Its not ALL her fault shes like this, she was raised in a daedric cult for mephala when she was very young. Her adoptive mom killed her real mom and dad and took her in when she saw a “spark” in her, she now considers her parents murderer to be more a parent than her real ones, even though she and her “mom” have a playful relationship where they constantly gaslight manipulate and try to murder the other one for fun to see who “wins”.
19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?
Shes a nasty blood drinking dead body bangin  sadistic little thotty with a phat ass. She only worships the night mother, sithis and mephala. When shes drunk her vampire fangs give her kind of  lisp and she reverts to her morrowind dialect so people are like “what in the name of fuck are you saying”
-----------
Valkya
What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?
I remember when I started ESO i had never played a nord in game before so i was like, im gonna make the biggest, most nordy nord to ever exist. And so she was born
17. Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?
Not a lot, but sometimes I regret making her have like 14 siblings and an extended family that breed like rabbits bcs i get them all confused AF. i know she has a hard time remembering too gdfgsdf
18. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?
The dark stuff she wears around her eyes to look cool during battle isnt warpaint most of the time. Its not even eyeshadow. She just takes dirt and blood and whatever shit she can find and smudges it around her eyes. Shes dumb
19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?
Hgdfhgd she fucks everything that moves. She cant go a whole day without flirting with someone, she doesnt even realize shes doing it it just comes naturally. I mean yeah it goes hand in hand w the hero thing; if a giant, big titty super strong warrior woman came in and carried me out of danger while fighting my enemies, id probably fuck her too. It makes for good drama bcs a lot of the time shes on her way a few hours later and theres a lot of pining hearts out there. Valkya simp club

i Also don't know ur OCs but: 1, 4, 5, 8, 15, 22, 23, 24, 25, 33, 42, 50, 54, 56, 61, 73, and 78 please? -drunkmiraak
[[LKdghlkj sorry this took so long!! I got super sick so it sat half-done in my drafts for 84 years. @drunkmiraak]]
Oh boy oh boy oh boy!
So, while I’ve got half a billion OCs by technicality, my main idiot is Azaryne Redoran who takes the role of the Vestige in the ESO story I write with @sinnaroll by the name of Soulbound. (Ima also just casually pass on these questions for her to answer in reply for D'tannen, who is the other main character in this thingy so you can get to know him too!)
Thank you so much for asking!! Here we gooooo~!
1. What is/are your OC’s nickname(s) and how did it come about?
Az’s main nickname is the self-explanatory name shortening from “Azaryne” to “Az”. But D'tannen has kinda stuck on jabbing him with “pretty boy” to the point where it’s basically a nickname lol
Also, in-game plot reasons dictate that the Five Companions also know him by “Vestige”, much to his dismay. It’s what the Scrolls named him by, so the Prophet tends to slip and refer to him that way, and the others kinda do too by proxy for a while. However, after Az makes it clear that he’s really uncomfortable with it, Lyris and Sai specifically make a point not to call him that.
4. What is a noticeable physical attribute of your OC?
So I memed twice earlier before I got to these questions lasdgkh gomen, but my goofier answers are Dorito Shape and Resting Trouble Face
But more seriously, one of his major notable physical features is that he’s pretty much covered in tattoos from his neck down past his waist and starting down his legs. They’re being redesigned from scratch right now because I can’t ever allow myself to have characters that can be adequately represented in game i guess lmfao but here’s the in-game tattoos with some photo-editing for an earlier visual draft on where they might cut off—
Tumblr media
It’s a total personal headcanon but I decided that since the in-game body marking style was pretty clearly influenced by Maori-style kiriituhi, that Az’s tattoos are also highly significant in a similar way. Each piece symbolizes or connects to either his ancestry, or his own life and skills and milestones. His designs weren’t finished, but have the indication of where they were meant to continue as he hit new points in his life. Unfortunately, since his life was cut so short, that’s as far as they ever get.
On a lighter note, he also has pretty big ears?? Lmao
5. What does your OC normally wear? What would your OC wear on a special night?
He likes clothes that are comfortable but flattering. He knows what his assets are and enjoys looking well-dressed – a bit of a remnant from his previous life as a noble.
He tends to favor sleeveless tops and cool-colored fabrics with neutral accents. He particularly likes blues of all shades, and some purples. He’ll also occasionally wear red. On his travels he wears leather armor that fits within these features, and notably has a Khajiiti-style jack because he liked the aesthetic of it when he saw the style in a tailor’s display.
When he’s dressing up, he’ll wear more flowing robe-like attire. He had more reason to do so while he was alive, and at the time it was usually specifically Dunmeri cultural clothing. Over the course of Soulbound, he only dresses up the once so far for a date with Sinna. That takes place in Orsinium, so it’s Orcish formal wear.
Even if the situation’s not a fancy one, though, he’ll usually still wear kohl eyeshadow, which D’tannen gives him shit for, of course lol.
8. How does your OC talk/what does your OC’s voice sound like?
Az’s voice is light, crisp, warm and friendly. It’s between tenor and baritone in range, and the expected Dunmeri accent. He’s well spoken, and you can tell he’s well educated, but his phrasing isn’t snobbish or condescending, and there’s a firm sort of sincerity to his speech, even when he’s being playful.
15. What was your OC’s childhood like?
Az’s childhood was a little complicated in that it came with a great deal of privilege, but also a great deal of expectation. He was noble-born— the eldest son of House Redoran’s Archmaster— so before he was even old enough to have an awareness of the world, his parents had already decided many things about his future.
In spite of both this and the constant pressure of the Redoran philosophy that “a light, careless life is not worth living”, Az had an untamable spirit that continuously tried his parents’ patience. As a child, his impulsivity, tendency to bend the rules, and headstrong defiance on points he fundamentally disagreed with led to frequent discipline, and a particularly strained relationship with his father.
Over time, he begrudgingly learned to play by the rules, but would still disappear from time to time for brief moments of freedom.
He had two younger siblings— Eralane and Meril, and they had very close and loving relationships with each other. Az always did his bes to see right by them, so they felt safe in knowing that he would always have their backs. They didn’t ever keep much from him, as a result, and Meril specifically often looked up to him as a role model.
By the time he was fourteen, he’d been arranged into a political betrothal to solidify clan relations within the House, and it was decided that the two would be married in 16 years when they were both fully grown adults. Neither he nor his intended fiancée were really comfortable with this, but even as young as they were, they knew it was a sticky situation far bigger than just the two of them. So, they quickly established that, future aside, they didn’t feel entitled to each other’s feelings. They would both rather have a straightforward, honest friendship than try to force things between them.
Because of this, there was no tension when other chemistries developed in later years. Instead, they continued to ignore their inevitable marriage, and turned their performative date nights into formally-dressed vent and gossip sessions. Using the expectations put upon them to their advantage as they got older, they also happily became each other’s alibi when either of them needed time away with other people.
22. Who is/are your OC’s closest friend(s)?
Since arriving back on Tamriel, he’s been shuffling company a lot on his journeys. He’s also pretty introverted, despite being fairly socially adept. He doesn’t have any real connections from his previous life anymore, but has met many people and made casual friends and positive acquaintances with a solid chunk of new ones.
In terms of more serious friendships, D’tannen is honestly the closest, which is kind of incredible honestly laksdhg. But, they travel with each other day in and day out, so there’s a tight bond there that’s developing fast.
He’s also particularly attached to Irvane, who was his first friend since coming back to Nirn.
23. Who are the people your OC surrounds him/herself with?
Along the same lines as I just said above, he’s never in one place for very long right now, so he is constantly around new people. His kind heart and need for hands-on activity means he tends to gravitate toward people he can help in some way or another. His empathy and sense of honor do most of the weeding. He’d rather be around someone who has shown good intentions, even if they are rough around the edges, than someone who rests on the laurels of past deeds and judges others against themselves.
24. Who are the people your OC dislikes/hates?
It’s pretty damn hard to make this list, at least if you have any sort of good bone in your body. He’s really very empathetic and patient, and will forgive so quickly once he feels amends have been made that it’s honestly gotten him into trouble.
But, even with that said, he’s got some strong resentments for some strong reasons… Notably: Mannimarco and his Worm Cult, ol’ Molag Bal himself, and pretty much anyone who allies with them… Malacus is another name that quickly finds its way on the list under “kill unflinchingly” as he becomes closer with D’tannen.
25. If your OC has a soulmate, who is it?
oh my god im so sorry this joke is just right here its too easy to grab i can’t help myself –
Doesn’t a soulmate require… a soul…?
33. What subjects interested your OC?
He’s always done whittling as a hobby, so he’s currently kinda advancing on that in woodcarving. Since he was also trained in maintaining and repairing his own weapons and armor in life, that’s carried over into an interest in actually crafting weapons on his own. He does wind up making his own bow way later on, and even spends a bit of time with the Morkul Orcs in the Orsinium arc learning to do some metalwork.
42. What makes your OC happy?
He’s very attached to his dog Blackjack, and the mutt can always seem to pick him up when he’s otherwise faltering. He loves whittling and tends to carve little objects to occupy his mind. Complicatedly, D’tannen makes him happy as well, lol.
He also tends to have moments where he finds happiness in specific things, but the emotion related feels strange or misplaced. When this happens, it’s usually because whatever he’s experiencing— a particular sight or smell or flavor— is something that ties directly to a positive memory he’s lost from his life before. A sort of unwitting-nostalgia that’s hard to pinpoint or replicate.
As a general rule, he’s pretty easily contented. He lives very much in the moment, which combined with his adaptability and natural optimism, means that he’s usually able to find some small spark of cheer for himself anywhere he goes. He’s always wanted the freedom of life as an adventurer, so if circumstances were different, this would honestly be an ideal life for him. However, it’s pretty dampened by the stress of current events, along with the nagging restless and hollow feeling of having lost his soul.
50. What secrets does your OC have?
This is a bit of a tricky one. He’s not a super open person, but he also doesn’t like to lie to cover things up. However, there are many things about his life at present that he finds he has to dance around giving knowledge of. In some ways, the very nature of his current existence is something he keeps tucked away. It’s not very easy to explain to anyone, so he’s grateful that for the majority of the people he interacts with, direct questions never really come up.
In the second act of Soulbound, however, after he becomes very close with Sinna, Sinna asks him directly for his story. He dodges it for quite some time before finally giving him the details, but he’s kind of nervous at that point to state it. He doesn’t know how Sinna might react. But, he lays it out on the table anyway: He’s not truly alive. He’s what remained of himself after he was sacrificed by cultists to Molag Bal. His soul was stolen, and he has only vague pieces of memories from when he lived. And now, he’s been prophesied to assist in stopping a daedric invasion.
Sinna’s response was heartfelt. But, nobody could blame him for the fact that all he could manage for a brief moment after listening was “Wild….”
54. Does your OC think with his/her head or heart?
Heart… His upbringing tried its best to instill an ability to detach for the sake of duty, but honestly, he’s never been able to. Even when he knows there’s no way he can avoid a difficult situation, and is able to approach it tactically, emotion will be gnawing at him all the while, and he’ll be completely staunch on the things he believes the most if those interfere with the “logical” course of action.
56. What are some of your OC’s strengths?
He’s honestly got a wide range of skills in a lot of ways. He’s a highly skilled archer, and has a very well-rounded set of combat and survival skills that have been hardwired into him since a very young age. He’s also got a great sense of aesthetics, which he likes to express in woodworking and whittling when he can. He’s intelligent, but a lot of his skill specifically in emotional/social intelligence comes from his powerful empathy, and how dramatic swings of circumstances in his life have given him many perspectives to draw from, even subconsciously through the massive amnesia he struggles with. He’s incredibly adaptable. He’s intensely loyal, courageous, and firmly optimistic even through the worst circumstances. He’s got an incredibly strong character to him, and it tends to be both charming and inspiring, even when he doesn’t recognize that he’s producing these effects himself.
61. What is the general impression your OC gives other people?
Honest. Empathetic and selfless. Good-natured, down to earth, and a bit wild-spirited. Patient, incredibly forgiving. Helpful. Playfully charming. A protector. A defender of good.
73. What is your OC’s favorite form of entertainment?
He likes art, stories, nature, animals, and adventure. Crafting from time to time as well.
78. What is your OC’s favorite time of day?
Late morning. The point in the day when you’re up and awake and setting off. The whole day lies in wait before you, and you’re ready to meet it

Mí Flor, Part One Cause I hit Max.
//this is posted on Wattpad, Amino and Archive of our own.
Lance sighed as he fanned himself, trying to cool himself from the hot sun. His gorgeous tanned skin glistened in sweat. He was only in his baby blue shorts, a white crop top that had the words 'BI' written across it in the bisexual flag colors, and a flower crown made from blue flowers, mostly hydrangeas, Blue Delphiniums, an occasional periwinkle flower and bright blue forget-me-nots.
He had spend all morning helping out his mother, Rosa, with the community garden in their city. But is was abandoned at the moment, thank goodness, he'd never be caught dead so unclean and sweaty.
"Lance!" A high-pitched squeal came from the garden entrance and Lance almost completely froze, before he recognized the voice of his hermanita, Violet. The small blonde curly haired 8 year old girl ran over to him and wrapped her small arms around her older brother.
Lance laughed as he pat her back and hugged her the best he could with one arm. "Hey, Vi. What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be with papá?" He narrowed her eyes at her in suspicion.
Violet shook her head. "No! Papi let me come here to tell you something!" She exclaimed, her silvery grey eyes shining brightly. "Qué es?" Lance asked, switching languages. It was a habit Lance could never get rid of. Being able to speak more than one language meant that he constantly switched back and forth with talking in his 1st and 2nd language.
"Tengo uno nuevo amigo! Un nuevo amigo, hermano!" Violet beamed, a grin plastered on her face and her eyes sparkling almost as if the sun was about to come out from in back of some clouds.
"Muy bien, mí princesa." Lance cooed at his sister and affectionately carassing her cheek with a dirty hand. Violet squealed and playfully slapped his hand away. "No haces eso!" She whined, pouting.
Lance laughed, turning away to the red roses he was watering. Next to them were red alstroemerias, marigold flowers, amaryllises, and many more red flowered plants that Lance couldn't identify.
There was a quiet and calm silence before he felt Violet tug on his shirt. "Umm... Lance..." She muttered, her face a bit guilty and Lance's heart dropped a notch and he'd began to fill with worry.
"Yes?" He asked, hoping it wouldn't be that bad. "Umm... My friend is gonna be coming in any minute now... He wanted to see how the garden looked like..." She informed her smile crooked and nervous.
Lance froze and his breath hitched. He was going to be meeting his little sister's new friend in a few minutes at most in these clothes. He felt the shock ware off and he was about to open his mouth and say something, before the doors opened and Lance felt his heart race and lifted his gaze to see who it was, hoping it was Veronica, Luis, Marco, or even his Mama and Papa. But no. It was a stranger. No two strangers.
The two seemed like brothers or at least related in some way. And they were both REALLY good looking it was unnatural and Lance could already feel his cheeks heating up and he hoped they'd mistake it for the sun's heat in his face and his hours of working outside.
Violet grinned and ran over to one of the men. He was tall. Extremely tall. Like taller than Lance tall. He was also extremely muscular and had the tiniest waist ever. He had light gray eyes like Violet's, but his seemed more like storms. He had black hair, but he had a few strands of hairs gathered together on the front of his head that was white and looked fluffy. He seemed hot and Lance would have totally hit on him if he didn't give off some sort of a dad vibe.
Dad vibe guy hugged Violet with what Lance noticed to be a prostatic arm. "SHIRO!" She squealed and the man brightened. The other man however, avoided his brother (? Lance wasn't too sure yet) and Violet. He seemed to be looking at the red flowers Lance was watering.
Lance blushed in embarrassment as he made eye contact with him. He had longish hair, that type that reached his shoulders. 'Mullet!' Lance thought as he looked at the silky black hair. He was shorter than Lance and had the most beautiful purple eyes Lance had ever seen. He kept in a gasp. Despite his beauty, he wore black ripped jeans, a red tank top, and a jean jacket wrapped around his waist. He looked good. Lance decided then thought unpleasantly on how dirty he looked.
Lance awkwardly waved before putting the watering can on the ground and slunged his backpack over his shoulder. He picked up the watering can again and washed the dirt off his hands with the water remaining in the can. He caught sight of the beautiful man's surprised look and smirked.
"Lance!" Violet was suddenly tugging him over to Dad vibed man. He smiled at Lance and Lance nodded in return. "I'm Shiro." The man introduced himself. "Cool. I'm Lance." He replied with a friendly smile. Shiro glanced at his companion. The other looked away though he muttered his name. "Keith..." Lance whispered. "Nice."
Keith blushed as he crossed his arms and hummed in agreement. Lance gave him a grin, brightness, teeth showing and all. It made Keith curse at himself for finding the guy he'd just found out the name of, attractive.
Violet smiled as she hugged Lance's leg. "Lancey! Can we go get something to eat with them!?" She asked excitedly. "Viii!" Lance whined. "I look a mess! I can't just go eat like this! I have to go home and shower. Then you know Mama would never allow us to go out right after gardening. And I doubt Veronica, Luis, or Marco would want to got. They've got their jobs!" He scolded at her. Violet pouted. "What about Papa?" She asked.
Lance shook his head, sighing. "No, Vi. He's been looking after you all day. You need to give him a break." He said sternly. A cough interrupted their conversation. "Umm... Well... We don't mind waiting a bit..." Keith suggested, not wanting to leave just yet.
Lance blinked. "Wait, really?" He asked, surprised that Keith had said that they'd wait. Keith nodded carefully. "Sure... Why not?" He shrugged.
Lance beamed at him. "Thank you! Come on. Our house is walking distance." He said, slipping on a sweater and walked indoors to the office where his Mama was working on the indoor garden. They walked in on her playing Shakira and Lance instantly recognized the once.
"Andale, hijo! Baila conmigo!" His Mama danced towards him and Lance could not ignore the spark of energy pullsing through him.
"And I'm on tonight, you know my hips don't lie! And I'm staring to feel it's right!" Lance sang along with him mother as he dipped her.
She cheered and Lance could hear the whistle his father made from his spot. "Baila, hijo!!!!" He whooped as Lance laughed.
Keith watched with mild interest. He was so beautiful. Anyone would be blind to see it. And the way his body moved. Oh, dear gods have mercy on him. It was enough to make Shakira and Beyonce jealous for days, before they would start worshipping him.
Shiro looked down at his brother, face full of amusement. He had been like that when he first went out with Allura. Then they realized they were more compatible as friends. Then he felt it when he met Pidge's brother, Matt. But the feelings were so much larger. So much more sensere and not just a desire to be with someone. He nudged his little brother's shoulder and winked at him. Keith felt the heat flame up his cheeks. "Shut up." He muttered as he continued to observe the family.
Violet had joined in and she was dancing in the middle of Lance and their mother. They struck a pose at the end if the song, each one of them had a hip sticking out. They laughed and Lance hugged his mom.
"Mama," Lance began and Mrs. McClain groaned. "What is it now?" She asked, her voice heavily accented with a Spanish accent. Keith noted that everyone in the McClain family had that sort of accent. Lance's was a bit hidden when he spoke English, but it was obvious when he spoke Spanish that he was fluent in it
"We're gonna go out to eat..." Lance had started again. "Poor su puesto que no." Rosa scolded at him. "Tú sabes que no puedes ir sin banando te despues de estando aquie." Lance immeadatly shook his head. "After I shower." He finished.
Rosa pursed her lips. "Pues.... Muy bien." She agreed and Keith felt a pang of happiness wash over him. "Muchas Gracias, Mamá! Te amo!" He said, blowing a kiss to her.
Rosa smiled, shaking her head. "Ay... Mi hijo." She laughed, fondly looking at him trip over to the brothers Violet had befriended.
"We can go now." Lance grinned as they walked out the door and down the street to what seemed a sure path.
They arrived to a baige house with toys scattered over the lawn. Lance grinned sheepishly. "Sorry. My cousins are here at the moment." He said as he unlocked the door.
You could immeadatly here the shrieks of children and teens running around. They were paying a game. At the same time. Kareoke and Just Dance.
"I WANNA BE LIKE I WANNA BE LIKE MOST GIRLS!!!" One of the teenagers screamed into their mic. She was a female. And it seemed as if her followers were all little boys screaming along to the lyrics as well.
Some cliche One Direction song was being danced my another teenage boy and his minions seemed to be all little girls.
All in the midst of the mess was another teenage boy trying to keep everyone from fighting. "Dios mio!" He cursed.
All the fighting seemed to fade away and was filled with shrieks of happiness. "Lance!""Primo!""Hermano!" Were some of the things said as a pile of children threw themselves at Lance.
"No me tocan!" Lance shouted over their excited voices. The boy who was trying to stop everyone from fighting looked relieved and ready to faint. "Estas bien, Marco?" Lance asked over to him. Marco just sighed and gave him a thumbs up.
Lance then looked over to the heep of kids. "How about a movie?" He asked, calmly. "YAY!!!" They all seemed to agree.
"Cinderella!""Frozen!" The kids looked over at each other with a glare. "How about Tangled?" Lance suggested. All the kids finally seemed to agree as they layed down on the couch as Lance but them a movie.
"Violet. Can you please feed Blue?" Lance called as he instructed Shiro and Keith to watch the movie with the others as Lance got ready. Violet nodded. "Okie!" She exclaimed happily.
"Who's Blue?" Shiro asked, curiously, and quiet frankly, Keith was curious too. Violet beamed at the question. "Blue's our cat! She's everyone's favorite pet." She boasted. "I'm sure." Shiro agreed as Violet dumped a cup of cat food on a dish. "Blue!! Come and get it!!" Violet sang.
When it was about halfway throughout the movie, Lance raced down the stairs. He had a blush on his cheeks, but it seemed... Natural. There was also noticable freckles that dotted his gorgeous tanned skin. Slight curls bounced at the end of his wet hair. "Beautiful..." Keith whispered.
He was wearing one of those short shorts girls usually wore during the summer and a white crop top that showed off his slightly muscled stomach. His shoes were those Galaxy patterned tenis shoes. He also wore and over sized jean jacket. He had a small black and white backpack over his shoulders, that probably held onto his phone and who knows what else.
"Lancey!" Violet squealed as she hugged his legs, giggling and smiling. Keith and Shiro stood up.
"Ready to go?" Lance asked, a small grin lighting up his face.
Shiro and Keith smirked nodding. Lance walked over to Marco and kissed his forehead. "I'll be back. If they misbehave, don't be afraid to call Mama or their parents." He said softly, then walked back towards the others and they went walking towards a nearby diner.

Tale as old as time: ESO Network chats with Disney animator Tom Bancroft
New Post has been published on https://esopodcast.com/tale-as-old-as-time-eso-network-chats-with-disney-animator-tom-bancroft/
Tale as old as time: ESO Network chats with Disney animator Tom Bancroft
Beauty and the Beast. The Lion King. Aladdin. Mulan.
These iconic animated films are part of the story of the famous “Disney Renaissance,” which propelled the studio back to commercial success and critical acclaim in the ’80s and ’90s.
Tom Bancroft played a role in that story too — the artist has 30 years of experience in the animation industry, much of which was spent with Walt Disney Feature Animation. He was an animator on four animated shorts and eight feature films (the films named above are part of that list). He has also worked with Big Idea Productions, creators of the popular Veggie Tales animated series.
During Dragon Con 2018, ESO Network reporters Mary Ogle and Ashley Pauls chatted with Bancroft about his love for art, his favorite Disney project, and the industry shift from hand-drawn to computer animation. Read an excerpt from our interview below and listen to the full interview on Earth Station One podcast episode 437: https://esopodcast.com/the-earth-station-one-podcast-437-the-big-lebowski-live-from-dragon-con/
ESO: Tell us a little bit about your career and how you got started. What was that initial spark? What motivated you to get involved in this and pursue your art as a career?
I think I grew up in a golden age of comic strips. So this is a little tangent-y, but it was not the golden age of animation, unfortunately. When I grew up, mostly in the ’70s, I had a twin brother and we would draw together and what we would draw was comic strips. “Peanuts” was really big with Charles Schulz, and then soon came “Bloom County” and then soon after that “Calvin and Hobbes.” And of course the peak of Mad magazine.
It was all that sort of illustration and comic strips that really fascinated us. But then we had sort of a sub love of live action film, but especially Ray Harryhausen movies, which is stop motion. And we didn’t put it all together to go, “well, we like to draw, we like stop motion — animation seems like a good fit.” It still took a while till just after high school that we really realized [that].
Simultaneous to all that, we were watching Saturday morning cartoons all the time. But the love for Saturday morning cartoons wasn’t really artistic, I would say; it wasn’t like we were drawing “Scooby-Doo” or the “Super Friends.” We also liked comic books too. But kind of both of us looked at that as the impossible dream, because anatomy and things like that — it looked too hard.
But like I said, on the animation side of things, it was kind of a dead time. Those Saturday morning cartoons were pretty popular, but really, it was all about getting it out cheap, right? You look at “Super Friends,” and limited animation and Hanna-Barbera stuff. It was kind of a bad time to want to be an animator, I would say say. Even though there’s a lot of nostalgia for “He-Man” and things like that, it’s just not really well animated. (laughter) I think we can admit that.
[Then] Disney films started to get a little bit better and better. They were on the cusp of having a resurgence. “The Great Mouse Detective” had come out; that’s a fun, cartoon-y, well-animated film. And it was films like that, that really kind of made us go, “Oh, wait a second, you know, this might be the path. It combines a lot of our loves.”
And so we just kind of fell into animation, really. Did a little stop motion animated film for our church youth group, got together a couple friends that also wanted to try animation. And we just sort of taught ourselves. This is before the internet, so we’d go to the library and try and find books on even exposure because we’re literally using a Super 8 camera and shooting these clay animated figures one frame at a time. And so we just needed to learn, but that was close to Ray Harryhausen, so it was within our wheelhouse. We were researching him quite a bit.
Then that love translated to “well, we already like to draw, why don’t we try drawn animation?” And then we found out about CalArts (California Institute of the Arts). We already were living in California, and CalArts is like the animation school in the U.S. It still is, but at the time it was one of the only ones and it was founded by Walt Disney. So we tried for it and got it in, miraculously. And after a year and a half, got an internship at Disney. And that’s what started our career.
Have you done mostly traditional animation? Or have you also delved into computer animation?
Later on in my career, pretty much toward the end of my Disney days, I ended up following my heart in 2000 and joining Big Idea Productions, and they do Veggie Tales. While I was there, I learned CG animation and learned how to do Bob and Larry in the computer. And fortunately, it was simpler; they didn’t have arms and legs.
But it was still tough. I mean, it was a huge learning curve. I’ve always heard, “Oh yeah, computers are just, you know, just a tool.” But it’s a radically different way to animate for someone like me, who had really finally figured out how to do 2D animation after about 10 years at Disney. It felt like I was starting all over again, and it was a tough year.
And I can’t say I loved it; I missed drawing. And so I immediately switched over, even while I was at Big Idea. After animating a little bit, I switched over to storyboarding and then ultimately directed and created the 2D “Larryboy Adventures” show. That was much more a better fit for me.
I left and came back to Disney and did “Brother Bear” traditional animation, and worked on Rutt and Tuke, the two moose characters. And then after that, I started my own company. And so I’ve been pretty much independent for what I call the second phase of my career. And a lot of that has been character design and children’s book illustration, some directing, some 2D animation still too, but a variety of different things. Comic books, even.
You’ve gotten to see both sides, with the hand-drawn animation and the computer. How is the creative process different and what are some of the advantages and disadvantages you feel are in each form?
It’s funny, because a lot of people think that the switch and kind of the death of 2D animation in feature films — here in the U.S., especially — is because CG animation is cheaper. It’s not; it’s the same or more, really, and you almost need as many people too. It’s not like we even save a lot of money in CG animation on how many people you hire, and you certainly have higher equipment costs than ever before. And it’s not even necessarily faster.
The biggest difference between 2D and CG is that there’s a lot more upfront work in CG, and then 2D has more time at the end. Because in CG once they model the characters and get all that figured out, the animation process goes a lot quicker than in 2D, because now they have the model, it’s not going to change. It’s not like it’s going to get revised. And some of that happens, obviously, but they kind of stick to it. And then also, at certain point, once they put the lights in, there’s a lot more automated, what I would call “the ink and paint phase” in 2D. There’s the rendering process that goes a lot quicker, because once they model it, they know the colors and they’re already set.
We can get going a lot quicker [with 2D]; we can get into the animation phase, we can design the characters and all that and jump into animation a little sooner. But then the back end is a lot of cleanup and color background painting. All that is on the back end, and it can take a lot more time.
What was your favorite Disney film to work on, if you can narrow it down?
Oh, it’s pretty easy. It was “Mulan.”
I got to design and develop Mushu the dragon. And so because I was the supervising animator for Mushu on that film, I really got onto the film very early and put a lot of heart and soul into that film, more so than what I was able to on other films.
I did young Simba; I’m very proud of animating young Simba on “The Lion King,” but I worked under Mark Henn who was the supervisor of that. And he had designed Simba and was issuing me scenes and stuff. So I didn’t get to have as much of a say, I guess you could say, in defining his character, just in the scenes that I had, not like the whole character.
How do you approach putting personality into your characters? What things do you use to show a visual representation of that personality?
Some of that is in the character design. There’s certain things like when I was designing Mushu, we knew right off the bat that he was going to be a thin, snake-like dragon because I found out really quickly in my research, in Asian dragons, they’re usually based on snakes and things like that. The dragon in [“Sleeping Beauty”] is a European dragon, and they’re more like a crocodile or something like that. They’re very thick and massive. But the Asian ones usually are skimming across the water or they’re fire dragons. They also are elemental, and Mushu is a fire dragon, which we never mentioned in the movie. But it was part of his design.
I have flame-like shapes on him, and they oftentimes have fish scales. And he’s got a little mustache, kind of a fuzzy upper lip, which is based on a camel. They’re made up of different pieces: his cow ears and horns like an elk or something, although I shrunk them. He’s got kind of a pig’s nose; they’re usually made up of a lot of different animals. And so all of that research went into the design, even a very simplified form. If you look at Mushu, you don’t really guess those things as much. But every single thing on him is there for a reason, even his claws that are like an eagle’s claws. They’re just very simplified and stylized.

Mete canasta Dirk ante Prigioni y en la jugada siguiente Calderón le intenta meter un balón a Amare, que con sus manos de plastilina lo deja escapar (como durante todo el partido).. Though Jackson smartly won't re engage on that postseason promise this time around, and backup center Andris Biedrins received some criticism for not working out with the team prior to training camp (a practice he's kept up every other year of his frustrating Warriors career), talking tough probably will help shake the cobwebs. The Warrior franchise has gotten too used to acting as part of the bunch over the last few years, even with ownership and regime change. And with rookie Harrison Barnes possibly rounding into the sort of NBA talent that could put a team over the top, Bogut is trying to stir the echoes a bit. Klance Fic Rec
Man do I ever read a lot of fics ha..ha…ha… Pretty much all of these are in canonverse, or with slight tweaks. Categorized by rating but otherwise in no particular order. Will be updated occasionally
—General/Teen—
We’ll Make it, You and Me - asexualrey (T/6,421) “Keith, if we make it out of this alive, I’m going to kiss you.” Awhh so sappy and fluffy I love it; hurt/comfort that is so endearing
Time to Intervene - nadagio (T/6,588) The Red and Blue Lions are sick of their paladins bickering all the time so they do something about it. How long does it take for two stubborn boys to break? Lolol this one is a fun read, lions be staging an intervention
Downtime - pairagoose (unrated but I say G/7,158) When the castle needs repairs (following ep Crystal Venom) they are forced to land on a secluded planet and while Keith and Lance are on patrol they discover their true feelings. This is really fluffy :D
A for Effort - amcw177 (T/10,441) The team thinks Lance and Keith need to get their act together. They decide to help speed things up, but heir attempts at matchmaking backfire spectacularly, which Shiro could’ve told them right from the start. Omg so funny I couldn’t stop giggling throughout..the characterization of all the other Paladins sure are spot on
Blaming Space- venpast (T/4,665) in which lance is sick of space and keith is sick of fighting and both of them are more lonely than either cares to realize So much langst and very well written
Dream A Little Dream of Me - exmachinarium (T/1,949) Lance was making out with someone in his room. Which is exactly how he knew it was a dream.
mi casa es su casa - Qitana (G/8,461) “Do you wanna do something fun?” Ho snap this is so good so adorable and yes it is a perfect slow build and so much fluff and asdfghjk happy ending
No Hetero- hayleythewriter (T/1,413) The Voltron Gang plays Never Have I Ever. What could go wrong? And what could go right?? THIS WAS A LOT OF FUN
Red is the Coldest Color - englishcivilwar (T/17,427) In which Lance is an epic fail at flirting, Keith is an oblivious walnut, and the rest of the team collectively groans and sighs. Someone’s gotta come to terms with their crush and it’s real damn fluffy
Can’t Cover Up - dear_chaton (T/2,744) Or the one where Keith battles with feelings, particularly for a blue paladin This is so sweet, going from angst to fluff real quick
Slowly, And Then All At Once - quartetship (T/2,051) He was in love. With Keith. Total fluff
Power-cuts and Sparks - rosacanina6 (T/12,513) Lance had assumed that his evening stuck in the castle with Keith would be highly uneventful. However, space has other plans when a seemingly inexplicable power-cut causes a series of unexpected antics.
Laws of Gravity Need Not Apply - yuu_chi (T/11,117) It’s a difficult thing to go from secretly crushing on your school rival at a distance to sharing a tentative psychic connection with him, an audience of three other people, and an assorted collection of sentient machines. I feel like I’m gonna have an aneurysm with all this build up haha. Emotions, and dealing with the feels and then it finally all comes together (lots of fluff)
Huddling For Warmth - WhisperElmwood (not rated, but I give G/3,162) After ridding a planet of it’s Galra invaders, Keith and Lance literally have to huddle for warmth. Keith is jealous, Shiro is proud and Pidge gets all nerdy. There may also be mutual pining. The description of this planet is way cool (heh) and the klance is really fluffy
Cuddles - dreamcp (G/783) Allura walks in on something a little unexpected. Wow so cute
the path to paradise begins in hell - corydalis (T/3,068) “Were- were you about to-”“No,” Keith lies.“You were!” Lance accuses, his tone borderline hysterical. “You were totally going to kiss me!”
Pick-Up Lines - LC_wolfe (G/2,785) In which Lance uses bad pick-up lines and Keith is oblivious. I have a great fondness for bad pickup lines
joke’s on you, loser - zxrysky (T/5,692) I love the trio banding together so cute
—Mature—
Blueprints - underthesilentstars (M/43,055) WIP “While soulmarks themselves were common, it was rare for someone to have anything other than the name of their other half…and Lance had a red paw print.” Still a wip but it’s so well written and the incorporation of the soulmark with canonverse? SO GOOD
Dumbass and Fishboy - sweatpantz (M/4,954) Lance finally finds something he’s better at than Keith. It doesn’t end how anyone expects. Teaching someone to swim can get real touchy (it appears this work has been hidden :()
Blame it On the Lions- deecherrywolf (M/3,626) They need to bond extra hard in order to fix their damaged lions i love it
Rapid Escalation- lysapadin (M/3,095) Pidge and Hunk finally give Keith a hint to explain Lance’s behavior, and after that, things escalate.
Gay Space Nerds - lexiachieves (M/2,732) Keith goes to rescue Lance who is handcuffed to a tree after retrieving the stolen lion. Hmmmmmm handcuffs
Lonely In Love - Warmybones (M/2,110) He could go, avoid all the temptations that made his breath shorten and his gaze linger for too long, but he felt warmer with Keith. Safer. He belonged right beside him, filling the cracks in his armour and keeping him from crumbling. Damn. This is so soft and fluffy
Bottle Episode - themoistplinth (M/13,014) Everyone is sick of Keith and Lance’s constant bickering yet they still insist that they’re friends. The gang bet that Keith and Lance couldn’t spend three days locked in a room together without hurting each other, and they’re not entirely wrong
Entangled - Purpleneutrino (M/101,859) When Keith found himself mentally linked to Lance of all people, he never thought that it would end in anything but irritation and misery on both sides. This fic is amazing I don’t think I’ve ever finished 100k words faster….Great mind meld fic and I love how all the other characters are so involved (just like in the show of course)
—Explicit—
Acceptable Behaviour - eso(cazzy) (E/3,147) Keith’s chest heaves with the exertion of dueling a killer robot while simultaneously managing to open the air lock door in order to save his fellow paladin’s life, and Lance thinks, Oh, fuck.
Heatwaves on Autopilot - whatthebodygraspsnot (E/56,327) Keith and Lance unknowingly inhale an alien aphrodisiac during a simple resource retrieval mission. Excellent work with the confusion and all that goes with these sex pollen fics haha. And of course there are feelings because I also need the fluff
Imagination is Power - deecherrywolf (E/17,209) “I am greatly offended you think I was offering to perform such an atrocity. No, but I have something that may help you” Lance misses having porn like back on Earth so he’s got an alternative haha
Driving Me Wild - arrafrost (E/7,095) Keith and Lance aren’t able to get more than a few minutes of alone time, sometimes less, and are always interrupted by their teammates whenever things start to progress in their relationship. They are more than a little frustrated and it’s only a matter of time until one of them snaps.
Keep On Coming Back For More - arrafrost (E/3,303) An overconfident Lance boasts that he is better at everything, including kissing. Normally he’s shot down, doubted from the start, so when he’s challenged to prove it… things get a little complicated. Um yeah, their competitiveness knows no bounds lol
Far Away From Nothing - ikira (E/12,552) When Lance is the last of the paladins to be recovered after their separation through the corrupted wormhole, everyone is a little concerned for him, considering how much Lance likes to be around people. Surprisingly, Keith seems to be the most concerned of all. Worried keith can be so sweet awhh
Unconventional Seating - talinor (E/4,697) “What the fuck are you doing?” Keith hissed.“You and your fantastic ass got me into this mess,” Lance told him. “And you’re not moving until the others go.” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
sugar and peaches, frozen mangoes and grenadine - cattchi (E/5,466) it’s their last night on a rescued planet, and Lance is in Party Mode™ but Keith doesn’t want to dance Is pwp and absolutely hilarious lol
Standing in the Eye of the Storm - erisgregory (E/1,828) shameless pwp set in the training room after a fight. They had to let out steam somehow
Something Just Like This - erisgregory (E/1,794) Lance puts himself in uneccessary danger and Keith is having none of that. Like the sweetest pwp you’ll read what the hell lol
Midnight Purple - hiat (E/5,421) Keith is jealous. Lance is an asshole. It works out in the end. So wonderfully descriptive ;D

Kamasi Washington’s Dynamic Apollo Set, and 9 More New Songs
The saxophonist Kamasi Washington and his band had been virtually living on the road for about four years when they arrived in Harlem to play a packed house at the Apollo in 2019. You can tell from this video — excerpted from a new full-length concert film — that the group has not lost the spark inside the material; on this version of Washington’s “Street Fighter Mas,” from the album “Heaven and Earth,” the two-drummer rhythm section pounds out a beat that’s both funkier and more thrashing than on the record — and Cameron Graves takes a lightning-sharp keyboard solo that could make a metal guitarist quake. GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO
Khalid x Disclosure, ‘Know Your Worth’
The sequel to “Talk,” Khalid’s magnificently tentative 2019 collaboration with the production team Disclosure, feels a little too inevitable. There’s nothing really wrong with “Know Your Worth,” Khalid’s brotherly self-help advice to someone who’s being mistreated and underestimated (though the cutesy vocal sample of “What!” does get annoying). But after the opening line, “He keeps leaving you for dead,” there’s nothing — a plot twist, a texture shift, a contrasty bridge — to challenge anyone’s expectations. JON PARELES
Sharon Van Etten, ‘Beaten Down’
Sharon Van Etten’s new single is all deliberation and determination, hovering between dirge — “Your big old heart gets beaten down” — and homily: “Don’t you get beaten.” It’s a subdued anthem that ticks slowly along on sustained synthesizer tones, tolling piano and Van Etten’s high, carefully understated voice, refusing to grieve or exhort, only to claim and hold its place. Maybe it’s an election-year song, too. PARELES
Beach Bunny, ‘Promises’
The bright jangle of “Promises,” by the Chicago indie rock band Beach Bunny, belies much darker subject matter. The singer Lili Trifilio is overcome by a breakup — “Sister said be patient, things aren’t what they seem/But it’s hard to think clearly, you never say what you mean” — and grappling with the void it left behind. In the video, she’s jumping on the bed, flailing. But look closer: She’s having fun, she’s free. JON CARAMANICA
Jhay Cortez featuring Anuel AA and J Balvin, ‘Medusa’
A slickly appealing too-big-to-fail collaboration between the rising reggaeton singer Jhay Cortez — one of the writers of the world-beating Cardi B hit “I Like It” — and the established stars Anuel AA and J Balvin. Cortez’s voice is almost airy, a sharp contrast to Anuel’s gruff antics and Balvin’s clinical poise. CARAMANICA
Lil Mosey, ‘Blueberry Faygo’
Leaked versions of this song have been popping up online since last summer, and have been making their way onto the viral song charts for the last few weeks. Now, it’s finally getting a formal release. “Blueberry Faygo” is the best song to date by the generally unimaginative rapper Lil Mosey. He sounds cheerful, almost childlike, in his boasting. Underneath him, the production is dreamy, built on a tightly squelched sample of Johnny Gill’s R&B classic “My, My, My.” CARAMANICA
Christine and the Queens, ‘People, I’ve Been Sad’
Christine and the Queens — the French songwriter Hélöise Letissier — couldn’t be more straightforwardly melancholy than she is in this ballad. Behind her declaratory vocal lines, it’s all bassy, sustained, 1980s-flavored synthesizers (think “Take My Breath Away”) and quivering strings. She’s singing about depression and withdrawal, perhaps with a partner — “If you disappear, then I’m disappearing too” — and passages in French trace her wounds back to a lonely, misjudged adolescence. But the music insists she’s not vanishing anytime soon. PARELES
Christian McBride, ‘Sister Rosa’
The esteemed bassist Christian McBride was born just after the close of the Civil Rights Movement, so he remembers learning about its heroes by flipping through the copies of his grandmother’s copies of Ebony and Jet magazines from the 1950s and ’60s. For many years he has worked on “The Movement Revisited,” a musical suite celebrating four figures from those pages who inspired him as a child: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Muhammad Ali. The suite, finally released as an album Friday, mixes hard-nosed small-group playing, soaring big-band orchestration, spoken readings from figures like Sonia Sanchez and Wendell Pearce, and choral singing. On “Sister Rosa,” the piece dedicated to Parks, a big band and a choir both savor the deep, mid-tempo swing feel, leaning on McBride’s bass for support as the voices unite in a long, weary drawl, quoting Parks: “I’m tired.” RUSSONELLO
Lido Pimienta, ‘Eso Que Tú Haces’
“That thing you do is not love,” the Colombian-Canadian singer Lido Pimienta chides a disappointing partner, but “Eso Que Tú Haces” — from an album due in April, “Miss Colombia” — is no petty kiss-off. It’s a substantial cultural statement uniting Afro-Colombian roots — rhythms, instruments and, in a video shot in Colombia, group dances — with just enough synthesizer heft to place Pimienta’s music in the here and now. PARELES
Pottery, ‘Texas Drums Pt. I and II’
Pottery is a band from Montreal, but it lays a carpetbagging claim to to punk and psychedelia in the six-minute “Texas Drums Pt 1 & 2.” At first, it harks back to the Clash’s “Rock the Casbah” and a hint of the Rolling Stones version of “Harlem Shuffle” — a grunting, cowbell-thumping, guitar-scrubbing vamp with an electric piano in the mix — and proceeds to get ever more crowded and noisy as singers shout, “All my best friends moved to Texas/All my best friends play those drums.” Of course there’s a phasing-and-feedback interlude, generous dollops of fuzztone, even a key change — anything but the sounds of the present. Hackschooling makes me happy | Logan LaPlante
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be happy. I want to continue to be happy, like I am now.
When adults ask you that question they just assume that you’ll automatically be happy and healthy. We don’t seem to make learning how to be happy and healthy a priority in our schools. It’s separate from schools and, for some kids, it doesn’t exist at all. But what if we didn’t make it separate? What if we based education on the study and practice of being happy and healthy? Because that’s what it is, a practice.
Education is important, but why is being happy and healthy not considered education?
Dr. Roger Walsh studied the science of being happy, what he proposes to come down to practicing these 8 things: EXERCISE - DIET/NUTRITION - TIME IN NATURE - CONTRIBUTION/SERVICE - RELATIONSHIPS - RECREATION - RELAXATION/STRESS MANAGEMENT - SPIRITUAL INVOLVEMENT.
Tumblr media
Much of education is oriented towards “making a living” rather than “making a life”.
My mother felt confident to pull me from traditional school to try something different. I am part of this small but growing revolution of kids who are going about their education differently. And that freaks a lot of people out. But I am thankful that my parents didn’t cave to peer pressure, and they are too.
Hackers are innovators, people who challenge and change the systems to make them differently, to make them work better. It’s how they think, it’s a mindset. We are growing up in a world that needs more people with the hackers mindset, and not just for technology. Everything is up for being hacked! Even education. HAVING THE HACKER MINDSET CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.
So, healthy, happy, creativity and the hacker mindset are all a large part of my education. I call it “HACK-SCHOOLING”.
Tumblr media
I don’t use any one particular curriculum, and I am not dedicated to anyone’s particular approach. I hack my education. I take advantage of opportunities in my community and through a network of friends and family. I take advantage of opportunities to experience what I’m learning. And I’m not afraid to look for shortcuts or hacks to get better, faster results. It’s like a remix or a mashup of learning. It’s flexible, opportunistic and never loses sight of making happy, healthy and creativity a priority.
It’s a mindset, not a system. That is why hack-schooling can be used by anyone, even traditional schools.
What does my school look like? I study a lot of math, science, history and writing. I like writing through my experiences and my interests, while connecting with great speakers from around the nation. That sparked my love of writing. (Not like in school, where I had to write about things that not interested me). Once you are motivated to learn something you can get a lot done in a short amount of time, and on your own.
Hacking physics was fun. We learned all about Newton and Galileo, and we experienced some basic physics concepts like kinetic energy through experimenting and making mistakes. A giant Newton’s cradle made out of bocce balls. We participated in Project Discovery’s Ropes Course, was awesome and slightly stressful. When you are 60 feet off the ground you have to learn how to handle your fears, communicate clearly and trust each other.
Community organizations play a big part in my education, like the program “Being aware and safe in critical situations”. We spent a day with a ski patrol to learn more about mountain safety. The next day we switched to the science of snow, weather and avalanches. Also, we learned that making a bad decision can put you and your friends at risk.
The group “Young Chautaqua” brings history to life. There we study a famous character in history, so then we can stand on stage and perform as that character, and answer any question about their lifetime.
Time in nature is really important to me. It’s calm, quiet, and I get to just log out of reality. I spend one day a week outside all day. At my Fox Walker classes we learn to listen to nature, to sense our surroundings and I’ve gained a spiritual connection to nature. The best part is that we get to make spears, bows and arrows, fires with just a bow drill, and survival shelters for the snowy nights when we camp out.
Hanging out at The Moment Factory, where they hand make skis and design clothes, has really inspired me to one day have my own business. The guys at the factory have showed me why I need to be good at math, be creative and get good at sewing. So, I got an internship at Bigtruck Brand, to get better at design and sewing. The people who work there are happy, healthy, creative and stoked to be doing what they’re doing. This is by far my favourite class.
Skiing for me is freedom, and so it’s my education. It’s about being creative, doing things differently. It’s about community and helping each other. It’s about being happy and healthy among my very best friends. So I’m starting to think I know what I might want to do when I grow up: I want to be happy.

“She Used To Be Mine”
It’s not simple to say Most days I don’t recognize me That these shoes and this apron That place and its patrons Have taken more than I gave them It’s not easy to know I’m not anything like I used to be Although it’s true I was never attention’s sweet center I still remember that girl
She’s imperfect but she tries She is good but she lies She is hard on herself She is broken and won’t ask for help She is messy but she’s kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up And baked in a beautiful pie She is gone but she used to be mine
It’s not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person And makes you believe it’s all true And now I’ve got you And you’re not what I asked for If I’m honest I know I would give it all back For a chance to start over And rewrite an ending or two For the girl that I knew
Who’ll be reckless just enough Who’ll get hurt But who learns how to toughen up when she’s bruised And gets used by a man who can’t love And then she’ll get stuck And be scared of the life that’s inside her Growing stronger each day ‘Til it finally reminds her To fight just a little To bring back the fire in her eyes That’s been gone but used to be mine
Used to be mine She is messy but she’s kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone but she used to be mine.
“Liability” One, two Baby really hurt me Crying in the taxi He don’t wanna know me Says he made the big mistake of dancing in my storm Says it was poison So I guess I’ll go home Into the arms of the girl that I love The only love I haven’t screwed up She’s so hard to please But she’s a forest fire I do my best to meet her demands Play at romance, we slow dance In the living room, but all that a stranger would see Is one girl swaying alone Stroking her cheek They say, “You’re a little much for me You’re a liability You’re a little much for me” So they pull back, make other plans I understand, I’m a liability Get you wild, make you leave I’m a little much for E-a-na-na-na, everyone The truth is I am a toy That people enjoy 'Til all of the tricks don’t work anymore And then they are bored of me I know that it’s exciting Running through the night, but Every perfect summer’s Eating me alive until you’re gone Better on my own They say, “You’re a little much for me You’re a liability You’re a little much for me” So they pull back, make other plans I understand, I’m a liability Get you wild, make you leave I’m a little much for E-a-na-na-na, everyone They’re gonna watch me Disappear into the sun You’re all gonna watch me Disappear into the sun.
“When”
I think I’ve been telling lies Cause I’ve never been in love Everyone falls for the sunshine disguise Distracted by who they’re thinking of
I’d rather date an idea Something I’ll never find Sure, I’ll live in the moment But I’m never happy here I’m surrounded by greener looking time
Am I the only one Wishing life away? Never caught up in the moment Busy begging the past to stay Memories painted with much brighter ink They tell me I loved, teach me how to think
I’ll take what I can get Cause I’m too damp for a spark Kissing sickly sweet guys Cause they say they like my eyes But I’d only ever see them in the dark
I’m sick of faking diary entries Got to get it in my head; I’ll never be sixteen again I’m waiting to live, and waiting to love Oh it’ll be over, and I’ll still be asking when
Am I the only one Wishing life away? Never caught up in the moment Busy begging the past to stay Memories painted with much brighter ink They tell me I loved, teach me how to think
I’m sick of faking diary entries Got to get it in my head; I’ll never be sixteen again I’m waiting to live, still waiting to love Oh it’ll be over, and I’ll still be asking when Oh it’ll be over, and I’ll still be asking when.

I’M SITTING in the Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana during the championship round of the Cuban baseball season in the spring of 1992. One of the grandstand orators so typical of Caribbean baseball crowds is holding forth on topics like who ought to be selected for that year’s National Team, why the manager should have called for a hit-and-run, who wasn’t in position to take a cut-off throw, as well as asides about daily life in that moment of Cuban history. The comment I’ll never forget, though, is not one of the opinions but the punch line: y eso lo sabe hasta un chileno que no sepa donde está la primera base — “and anybody knows that, even a Chilean who doesn’t know where to find first base.”
This was one of my first indications of how much — not just for Cuba but for all the países peloteros, all the baseball-playing Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean rim — the sport of pitcher and catcher, diamond and outfield, fielder and baserunner is perceived as an integral part of their cultures, a piece of what makes their people who they are. Whatever they share with that far-off Chilean, baseball is a part of what makes them distinct. The fact that their national sport happens to have evolved in the northern neighbor is almost an afterthought. I doubt that it was in the mind of that grandstand orator in 1992 at all. Though the word béisbol was imported along with the game, in common speech in Cuba and the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico the game is always la pelota, which is simply the Spanish word for ball.
Yet the game’s origin matters too. Baseball has a place in the complicated love-hate relationship, power dynamics, understandings, and misunderstandings between those south of our border and ourselves. Some two decades later, I was reading through two collections of Dominican short stories, all related to baseball. One story was by the poet Alexis Gómez Rosa, who spent many years living and writing (in Spanish) in New York. In “The Real Thing” (titled in English), Gómez Rosa tells the life story of a radio announcer who got his start by imitating the play-by-play of legendary announcers such as Buck Canel and Rafael Rubí, calling imaginary games from the Dominican leagues and the US World Series, speaking into a guava branch instead of a microphone. In the story, baseball and its metaphors are entwined with Dominican political history, the US invasion of 1965, and the announcer’s eventual death at the hands of a corrupt Dominican officer. I was also struck by the aptly named “Sacrifice,” in which Sandra Tavárez draws on baseball and its terminology for a contemporary dilemma of gender, as a woman has to decide whether to stay on the island with her boyfriend and his two baseball-obsessed teenage sons or follow her diplomat parents to a life abroad. Attending a ball game turns out to be the test. José Bobadilla’s “The Strange Game of the Men in Blue,” meanwhile, is an imaginary foundation myth, the introduction of the sport to an unnamed Caribbean country by the US army — which is not how it happened at all.
The question of how it really happened brings us back to Cuba. The earliest baseball games in the Spanish-speaking world took place on the island in the mid-1860s, when it was still a colony of Spain. This was two decades after the game had evolved out of British and American predecessors such as rounders and one o’ cat in the environs of New York City. The sport came to Cuba primarily via middle- and upper-class Cubans returning from study at Fordham and other Catholic colleges in the United States. Its rapid spread throughout the island was due in part to the fact that the new sport arrived just as long-simmering sentiments against both Spanish colonialism and slavery were erupting into open rebellion, sparking the Ten Years’ War (1868–’78) that pitted an uneasy coalition of Cuban planters, other white Cubans of all classes, free people of color, and escaped slaves against the Spanish imperial army. Both then and in the decades to follow, Cubans latched onto baseball as a modern, democratic, healthy, sportsmanlike, and distinctly non-Spanish entertainment, one that baseball’s boosters explicitly contrasted to the bullfight that they condemned as old-world, old-fashioned, bloodthirsty, hierarchical, and unfair.
The sport soon spread among people all classes and origins. Professional teams were founded in the cities of Havana and Matanzas, and makeshift clubs flourished from docks to sugar mills throughout the island, while publications such as El Pitcher and El Base-ball covered and promoted the game. Spanish authorities tried on a few occasions to ban baseball completely, but in vain. By the 1890s, a visiting Spanish poet reported that “[e]veryone was at baseball — men and women, old and young, masters and servants […] I had a presentiment that Spain had died for Cuba.”
When the final Cuban war for independence broke out (1895–’98), Spanish authorities again instituted a ban, and this time professional ballplayers were among those who flocked to join the rebellion. Three members of the pitching staff of the Almendares Azules became rebel army officers, as did players from the other clubs. Emilio Sabourín, player-manager of the rival Havana club, was arrested for his pro-independence activities and exiled to a prison camp in Spanish Morocco, where he died.
Thus, by the time US troops intervened in the Cuban-Spanish conflict in 1898, baseball was already firmly established as the island’s nationalist pastime, however North American its pedigree. When the yanqui troops ended their occupation of Cuba in 1902, the Platt Amendment (inserting a perpetual US right of intervention into the new Cuban constitution) was seen as an imposition they left behind. La pelota was not.
The Cuban struggle for independence also facilitated the sport’s introduction to neighboring countries and peoples. From the 1860s to the 1890s, tens of thousands of Cubans left the island to escape Spanish political repression or economic devastation. Some settled in Tampa or New York, others in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the Atlantic coasts of Mexico and Venezuela. As veteran Venezuelan sportswriter Juan Vené has put it, Cuba was
the cradle of the those who played the major role in introducing baseball to the rest of our countries […] that [Cuban] blend of indigenous Tainos with Spaniards and African blacks, living ninety miles of Caribbean waters off the coast of Florida, those cheerful and talkative Caribbeans, extroverted and emigrant as people who are born and grow up on islands tend to be.
Sugar planters or sugar mill mechanics, doctors or dockworkers, students of professions or professional shortstops, they brought baseball knowledge, equipment, and especially enthusiasm to the cane fields surrounding San Pedro de Macorís and the streets of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, to the Yucatán Peninsula and the port of Veracruz in Mexico, and to Venezuela and Puerto Rico as well.
In Venezuela, therefore, the game was already well ensconced when, in 1902, the first series between a local team and one from outside the country was played: the Caracas team club versus crew members of a US gunboat, the USS Marietta, cruising the Caribbean in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War. The sailors won the first game 16-3, and Caracas won the second 27-17, thanks in part to a grand slam by Cuban shortstop Emérito Argudín, a former Havana college player who had arrived in 1898 and founded a weekly newspaper devoted to the sport. The game was played near the ship’s anchorage in the port of La Guaira, in an improvised stadium where, according to Venezuelan baseball historian Javier González, “vendors sold fish patties and sugar water with lemon, and great quantities of beer were drunk in the makeshift stands.” The victory in the second game, especially, “unleashed an unprecedented enthusiasm for baseball in the state of Vargas,” the future home of the legendary La Guaira Sharks.
Only in Panama and Nicaragua did baseball have purely North American roots. The sport probably came to Panama (then still part of Colombia) via Americans crossing the isthmus during the 1849 California Gold Rush, or in the following decade with US railroad builders, travelers, and crews. Nicaragua, most likely the last Spanish-speaking country to take up the sport, seems to have acquired it, fittingly, from the cradle of the “New York game.” In Bluefields on the Caribbean coast, a lumber exporter named Albert Adlesberg sent back to his home town of New York City for baseball equipment, and by 1889 he had launched several teams.
From then on, the sport was deeply enmeshed in the region’s culture, and sometimes its politics. Always, of course, the victory of national teams in international tournaments was an occasion for intense national pride. Cuba was the perennial powerhouse, but Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic vied fiercely for Caribbean-wide titles too. During the tie-breaking final game of the 1941 Baseball World Cup (a Caribbean event long preceding the current Baseball World Classic), all schools and most shops in Venezuela were closed, the national government cabinet meeting was postponed, and the entire country listened to the radio broadcast from Havana. The victorious Venezuelan underdogs, the first such club to win a national championship, enshrined ever-after as the “Heroes of ’41,” were received with a valedictory address and poem (“Romance del Campeonato”) by the popular writer and politician Andrés Eloy Blanco.
Two rather more partisan examples of the sport’s role in internal politics come from opposite ends of the political spectrum. In the 1920s, in the wake of the Mexican Revolution, Yucatán’s popularly elected socialist governor Felipe Carrillo Puerto undertook radical reforms to break the stranglehold of the region’s plantation aristocracy and empower the Mayan-descended farmworker recently freed from their condition as serfs. The Socialist Party’s base organization created a special sports section headed by a teacher of baseball, provided team travel subsidies to further break down the isolation of the countryside, distributed over $20,000 worth of baseball equipment, and organized ball clubs in more than 70 percent of the state’s communities. Team names included Emiliano Zapata, The Martyrs of Chicago (after the executed Haymarket demonstrators), and Red Yucatán. The sport was linked to ancient Mayan games played in the ball courts being unearthed in the ruins of Chichén Itzá and other sites, and again it was contrasted with the bullfight, a symbol of the Spanish conquest and the pre-revolution era.
On the right, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo organized a famous all-star team in 1937. After renaming Santo Domingo as Ciudad Trujillo in 1936, he was determined that the city should not lose another national championship to either Santiago de los Caballeros or San Pedro de Macorís. Therefore he decreed that for the 1937 season two rival teams of the capital (think Yankees and Dodgers in 1950s New York) should be combined into a single team, Los Dragones (Dragons). He gave the general manager unlimited funds to hire talent from all over the Caribbean as well as stars from the US Negro Leagues. The result was a powerhouse Dragones team managed by a Cuban and made up of Americans, Cubans, one Puerto Rican (Pedro “Petrucho” Cepeda, father of future San Francisco Giants’s great Orlando Cepeda), and a sole Dominican. The players were frequently monitored by armed guards, and once before a crucial game they were jailed overnight to keep them away from the city’s bars and other temptations. Ciudad Trujillo narrowly won the championship, the dictator won bragging rights, and the relieved foreign players (including Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell) left the next day.

In North America, aside from the classic 1888 poem “Casey at the Bat,” baseball has found a literary home mostly in novels. In Latin America, by contrast, there are practically no baseball novels, despite the number of prominent novelists who have been great baseball fans — Mexico’s Juan Rulfo, Cuba’s Leonardo Padura and Arturo Arango, Nicaragua’s Sergio Ramírez, and Puerto Rico’s Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá. Baseball does play a certain role in Padura’s Heretics (primarily in the form of a ball signed by the legendary Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso) and in one climactic scene of Rodríguez Juliá’s The Pool (where a boy and his father attend a game in the San Juan stadium, and a microcosm of class, race, and international hierarchy emerges before the boy’s eyes).
One reason for this lack of novels, I suspect, is that, for a long time, Latin American high culture looked toward Europe while its popular culture, at least in the Caribbean and Central America, looked toward the United States. So writing about baseball was no way to make one’s literary mark as a “serious” writer. Similarly, the publishing big shots and tastemakers resided in Madrid, Barcelona, or Buenos Aires, not in baseball capitals like Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas, or San Juan. Also, to the extent that US baseball fiction could have influenced Latin American writing, the dominance of Spanish publishing again raised an obstacle. According to the late Mexican dramatist Vicente Leñero, author of the one-act plays Aut at Third and Fielder of Destiny, the translations he encountered, done in Spain by translators as remote from the game as the emblematic Chilean who didn’t know where to find first base, were laughable at best.
There is a stronger tradition of baseball poetry, including the Cuban Nicolás Guillén’s long elegy to the star pitcher and position player Martín Dihigo, the Mexican Alberto Blanco’s epic “La vida en el diamante” (“Life on the Diamond”), and Nicaraguan Horacio Peña’s book-length Poem for a Man Called Roberto Clemente. But what has saved Latin American baseball fiction is that prose writers and poets too have allowed their passion for the game to be expressed in short stories.
I had read a few such stories by Sergio Ramírez, published in the United States in Nick Caistor’s translations in the 1980s when Ramírez was Nicaragua’s vice-president in the first Sandinista administration. What set me off in a search for more was finding, at the Havana Book Fair in 2014, an anthology of 26 Cuban stories called Escribas en el Estadio (Scribes in the Stadium). While all touching, in some way, on baseball, the stories covered the complete gamut of styles and themes in contemporary Cuban writing. There were five or six that I especially loved, and I wondered what else might be out there in the other baseball-playing countries. That’s what led me, finally, to editing and translating Kill the Ámpaya!, a collection of 18 pieces from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, and Nicaragua, published earlier this year by Mandel Vilar Press, which includes most of the writers mentioned above plus others such as Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro, Rodrigo Blanco Calderón, Carmen Hernández Peña, and more.
Speaking of publishing, let me end by pointing out the crucial role of at least one case of Latin American state support for the arts. In 2008 and 2009, observing that “baseball has been an inseparable part of Dominican national identity” yet there had been an “almost inexplicable absence of a body of writing that would make use of literary situations that emerge from this sport,” the Secretariat of Culture of the Dominican Republic sponsored two prize contests for such stories, the winners of which were later published in the two collections I mentioned at the outset of this essay. The title of the first book, Jonrón 600, honors Sammy Sosa’s career home run total having exceeded that milestone. The second volume, published in 2012, looks to the future rather than the past. It’s called Círculo de espera, which means “on-deck circle,” encouraging us to imagine the writers of the near future rubbing dirt into their hands, taking their warmup swings, getting ready to step into the box and hammer out more literary clutch hits.
