HEY Trigger warning for the new episodes of Our Flag Means Death!
People who have issues with suicide or suicidal ideation being depicted should be careful. More details below. Vague spoilers.
I'm only halfway through ep 2, so I can't speak to all three eps. But there are multiple scenes in the first two eps where someone holds a gun to their head or talks about suicide or it's implied a suicide by self-shooting has occurred.
Also there's a general vibe that there's serious passive suicidal ideation going on, specifically with Ed.
So if you're sensitive to this, ESPECIALLY to suicide by gun, or people threatening to shoot themselves, I'd watch out. I don't think that it will happen at any point in this show, but still...

Baldur's Gate 3 progress report:
I'm in Act 3 with Durge. Lost my grasp on her character a bit in Act 2, and then accidentally locked her out of all origin character romances. So now I'm trying to find fun in having this playthrough go a little off the rails and exploring choices I probably won't be inclined to make on a more "canon" run. Still not really interested in a full on "evil" run, but definitely making some questionable choices here. A heel turn, if only a weak one.
The romance mess:
She was indulging in benefits with Astarion but after that pivotal conversation decided to be there for him as a friend instead.
I feel like Lae'zel woulda been a good route for this run but she didn't want sloppy seconds after the tiefling party I guess? (Also didn't let her ask until after the creche so that's maybe more the problem.)
By the time Wyll took her up on the dance she had other things cooking, and to be honest he didn't really click for me as a character until Act 3. That pout tho :(((
Pretty sure I want to do a Gale romance with my Tav so I swore him off for now. Gale romance as a treat. Look I KNOW I have a TYPE I have a THIRST for NERD CHARACTERS who spackle EGO and BAD HUMOR over their INSECURITIES like NO ONE WILL NOTICE I NOTICE
Wasn't ready to commit to a Karlach romance after the second engine upgrade and didn't wanna hurt her so skipped that lil' exclamation point and the whole thing fizzled.
I thought Shadowheart was still a possibility but nope! Not sure why!
I'm not sure if I haven't invested enough time in Minthara or if I missed the hop-on point there too. Or if glitched because I did the workaround to recruit her
Luckily Daddy Druid is around and horny, so Durge has an outlet for her less dark urges. Because why not.
The heel turn:
After abstaining from tadpoles for the first two acts, Durge flipped and took the astral tadpole, then started snackin' on the ones she tucked away earlier. She's not pushing them on anyone else who objects, but Minthara was jazzed and Gale was curious so who was she to deprive them of cool powers and a gross complexion.
Oddly enough, I had given her heterochromia at some point to turn the eye with the scarring around it white, and it did NOT get the astral worm treatment. She's got quite the look going on now.
The small grip I have on Durge's motivations is that after the paternity reveal she's feeling like bucking authority and throwing some vindictive middle fingers. Not sure where that will lead with the Emperor/ main quest but I do have a feeling Durge will be indulging the misguided goals of her [power] hungry guys.
Other thoughts:
Astarion is an EXTREMELY good character and all around well written and acted. I do wonder if there would be more affection for other characters if their animations were anywhere near as lively as his. He SHOULD be more dramatic than the rest, but idk. I feel like the others have a few good moments sprinkled in (SH fingerguns, Lae'zel describing turning into a mindflayer, Gale's needle miming, etc) but mostly end up... just standing there. Even Karlach, who's idle animations are the least idle things ever.
When I found some in-world text referencing a miniature giant space hamster, I thought it was a Mass Effect reference, not the other way around. I am on the precipice of meeting Minsc and Boo and I am excited.
Pretty sure I'm having a similar banter bug to DAI. Act 1 had tons of banter, but even then I'd have issues where I couldn't actually hear one of the characters, only read what they were saying. In Act 2 there was like NOTHING, and Act 3 has been sparse with the same issue as Act 1. Made Act 2 feel kinda stagnant to me, really hoping it doesn't happen in my next playthrough.

WoT episode 8 ramble:
Ishamael so dumbfounded to be thwarted he sat there throwing pebbles directly at a shield instead of, like, sucking the air away into a vacuum or collapsing the whole tower
Setting up Lanfear to be an inverse foil to Moiraine: I expect to see Lanfear sacrifice herself for Rand and Moiraine become scarily Forsaken-sequence with her willingness to sacrifice everyone and everything else for Rand, and Lan has to save her
Mat’s level up moments so hilarious
Moghedien most best ever Forsaken
Egwain went over to the dark side, super keen to see the repercussions
The Bornhold - Perrin setup was actually GOOD.

YYH LA EP1 first watch thoughts
They are clearly not trying to make a 1 to 1 recreation. It feels more like an alternate universe. I suspect once people accept this and try to enjoy it as a new original piece of canon media they will have more fun with it. I have fully accepted this so I will not be nitpicking the details here.
!!!!!Spoilers Under Cut!!!!!
I love Yusuke's new death and the early "in your face" approach to the demon insects and Sakyo's plan/chapter black with the sink hole.
Yusuke smoking was more prominent in the manga I think. Glad they brought it back.
Smile Bomb playing on the radio has already made this whole series woth the watch. TY
Yusuke's wake photo is sending me. This poor little autistic boy.
The characters' personalities are very on brand despite minor appearance differences. Yusuke is my favorite performance this episode. Though Kuwabara was a very close second. I didn't think I was going to like the new Kazuma but he really does the old one justice.
Kinda sad Kazuma and Yusuke don't go to the same school anymore.
ALL OF THE GIRLS ARE SO PERFECT
The heaven and hell name drop yeeted me into a little wall ngl. Not sure if that's because I liked the original spirit world after death process more or because of my religious trauma though.
In regards to SW! I'm so glad we get to see Botan as the ferie man in the boat. Also it was way too pretty! How do I vacation there?
Who lives in all of those houses in sprit world!? I need to know. (And maybe make an OC)
So no spirit egg? I am going to miss Puu.
Keiko is the real MVP of this story, per usual.
I wonder if they are going to do Maze Castle with all of these insects or if they will chop up these round worms solely to Sakyo's efforts to destroy the barrier between worlds.
I love how much episode one feels like a zombie flick at some points. The grundy horror additions are really working for me. And these stunt performers look like they were having fun.
Sakyo really looks like the perfect Naraku.
I'm so fucking hyped that we got to see Kurama and Hiei fight in ep1. And the artifacts look super cool.
Wish the fight scenes (the whole show really) was a little more in focus, though.
I kinda want a multiverse crack fic where the anime and live action casts team up f9r a joint mission now

I was a fool to expect anything of Seed. I watched just a portion of a camrip and it felt just like more of the same.
Couldn't finish because I was laughing so hard at everything. Fucking embarrassing to watch.
I'll watch in dubbed in English because this only deserves to be heard with Ed and Double D, it was that level of nonsense.
Who the fuck dressed Lacus for the final battle? That's got to be the most unerotic sexy bodypaint in the world. Crying from laughing so hard
That climax did not deserve Meteor playing over it
The Z'gok reveal was fun, but just like for BF Try, cool scenes and Kenichi Suzumura can't save you from being ass
God I hate movies.

Spoilers for episode 10 of The Magnus Protocol
Current theory: The creature breathing at the end IS Jon “speaking” through the tapes. He had sent emails and statements to Sam to lure him to the institute to “set him free”. This is why the [error] voice actor was Beth Eyre, because she gave a statement in the Magnus Archives, it’s a tape that he can speak through. This is how Jonathan Sims can still win please please please

finished shadowbringers msq (pre-patch quests) and
the cutscene going into the dying gasp was so epic. but then the post trail cutscene...was that really it for emet-selch?! was that the send-off for one of the best villains? at least ardbert got his moment that was really sweet.
patch quests up next so who knows what’ll happen. BUT STILL, it was just so underwhelming IMO!! but don’t worry, my wol will remember you sir.
regardless i can see why many people consider shb their fave expansion. emet-selch’s va kills the role and makes him such a good villain, the g’raha tia reveal (even though i got spoiled on that and they drop so many hints) because its not that he chooses to reveal himself but the hood just flies off, ULTIMATE ARDBERT REDEMPTION ARC - he grew on me so much. Finally getting more ascian lore. getting to amaurot and realizing emet-selch recreated a whole fucking city, one that he loves and mourns so dearly....

I really hate that they didn't let us make a real choice.
As always in mainline pokemon games, we're presented a dialogue "option" which is really just a choice between two ways to say the same thing. But for the first time in my pokemon playthroughs, the lack of choice was immersion breaking for me, because I would not fucking say that. Don't force me to say that. I don't want to, don't make me.
But in order to progress the game, there was no other option.
Fangames have well and truly proved that it is very possible to have games where the plot changes depending on your actions, so I really hope that someday soon the Pokemon Company starts implementing the same.
I just really wish they'd implemented it for the Teal Mask. I hated that. So much.
Spoilers bc I want to go more in depth with this than vagueblogging under the cut.
----------
Listen, what if they had implemented it? It could have been so easy.
If you choose to lie, you get to be better friends with Carmine but you alienate Kieran. You get the exact progression that happens canonically.
But. If you chose to tell the truth? You'd alienate Carmine, while becoming better friends with Kieran.
It would go from sparks to a flash fire - Kieran is glad that you were a good friend and told him, but he was eavesdropping - he knows that Carmine was going to lie to him and tried to make you do the same.
They argue - of course they do. They rarely do anything else.
Kieran says why wouldn't you tell me? I'm old enough to keep a secret if I have to, but we shouldn't have to keep it secret - you know I love the ogre- don't you love me?
Carmine says of course I love you - I want you to be safe, the townspeople would get so mad if you tried telling them, they would hurt you - how can you love some ogre you've never even met more than you love yourself?
Because it's not about being safe, or loving myself, Kieran shouts at her, it's about doing what's right! If everyone only cared about being safe instead of doing the right thing, then everyone would be a coward!
Don't call me a coward. Carmine storms off.
Kieran apologizes that we had to see that.
Grandpa tries to shuffle us past the awkward moment - well, I can get this mask fixed up, but I'll need some special crystals for it.
We make our errand runs, only to discover that Carmine, in her fury and blind rush to prove her bravery, has taken the mask and run off. We find her yelling angrily at the statues of the Lousy Three, the mask forgotten at her side - when we try to talk to her, she whips around and says what? Here to insult me some more? I'm no coward - I'll prove it! As soon as I beat you, I'm going to the ogre's den!
We have a battle, we win. As her final pokemon goes down, Carmine glares at the ground and her hands curl into fists. I'm not even strong enough to win against you - I'm never good enough!
In a moment of frustration, she punches the shrine - and the Lousy Three come back to life. The plot ensues as it does in the canon timeline.
At the end of it all though, Kieran agrees sadly that even though he really would've liked to have Ogerpon on his team, her choice of trainer matters. We'll just have to make sure to visit plenty!
But Carmine.... I want to prove that I'm not scared. I'm not scared of the ogre. And I'll prove it, by having it on my team. I want to battle you! I've gotten stronger since last time - if I win, let me catch Ogerpon!
She doesn't win - was never going to.
In the end, Kieran sees us off back home cheerfully, with an apology that my sister couldn't make it. (She said she had homework, but she's sulking, I think.)
Back in their childhood home, Carmine's bitter anger grows. Not good enough. Never good enough. I have to get stronger.

I just read Naomi Novik’s final book in her Scholomance trilogy, The Golden Enclaves. This was the first book I’ve read in I don’t know how many months, possibly since last winter. Historically I’ve been a huge reader, usually a binge reader. I’m in an odd lull from it now, and pretty much only watching things. A flip from the previous two years when I lived on fanfic and romance novels and could barely watch a thing.
Overall I liked it, and the whole series! My appreciation of this book was more intellectual than emotion, but I’m not sure if that’s the book or just my current state of mind. I have many thoughts about it, which I may eventually write something about. Particularly about the way she writes romance, and the role it plays in her stories, across her original fic and fanfic. And also about how she mapped the magical world onto the mundane.*
Mostly I’m posting this as a time stamp of when I read it, since I found going back through my blog useful when trying to reconstruct my watching life. And also as a note to self about what I was thinking of.
(This reading was triggered by the post someone reblogged about how there is a recurring character in Supernatural fanfic named Naomi Novak.)
*on the enclave politics of the magical world: I kind of wish she’d made it either less of a match for the cities and international politics of the real world, or more so, and leaned into the political allegory. As it was, it felt too much like relying on stereotypes as a shortcut.
on romance: I found Orion completely uninteresting as a love interest, although fascinating as a concept and a narrative foil. His boring personality was partly the point of the character—what happens when someone really is the hero, and only lives to slaughter monsters?—but it also made it hard to understand why El loved him, or to feel emotionally invested in her grief for him and her performing impossible feats just to save him. Intellectually I understood them, and they make for great storytelling, but I personally didn’t care much about his fate. And then at the end I realized that he performed the same role as the flat generic female love interests in so many stories about male heroes. Where they exist to be saved but aren’t fully fleshed out on their own. (thequeenofsastiel, I won’t tag you in case you haven’t read these books, but it’s making me think of our conversations about women in media.) Someone to motivate the protagonist, to be rescued. (I do also have many vague thoughts about all the interesting things she was doing with Orion and El (and both their mothers) that wasn’t romance, but I have a headache and don’t want to write anymore.)
Which made me look back to the other two novels of hers that I read, Spinning Silver and Uprooted, and in those the male love interests of the young female protagonist are similarly sidelined and… not necessarily one-dimensional exactly, but underexplored. They’re both significantly older than the protagonist, and the story of the romance is really a sideline or an afterthought. I know many people were bothered by the age gap in Uprooted, but as I recall it didn’t bother me because it felt like the story was about the protagonist growing up and coming into her power, becoming someone who was an equal of the old man wizard at the end. Like in so many stories where the hero gets the girl, the "romance" isn’t about him, it’s symbolic of the journey she went on… not a reward exactly, but also more about her than him. In Spinning Silver the romance is even less fleshed out—she goes into the woods with the fairy king (or whatever he was, I read it long ago) and they come out married. My reaction to that was mostly huh? It more or less made sense for the story, but she gives so little explanation of why and how they fell in love that it felt jarring.
If these three books were all I’d read of hers I’d assume she simply wasn’t interested in romance. The fact that 2/3 of the love interests are so much older and given so little page time reminds of that story (not sure if it’s true or apocryphal) about Louisa May Alcott being told she had to put a romance in Little Women and, in irritable defiance, making Jo fall in love with a boring old man. But much of her fanfic is romance, and when she puts it in I can usually feel the love and attraction between the characters, understand why they want each other. Which makes me curious about why it’s so different in the three published novels I’ve read. Is she less interested in het relationships? (I’ve read very little of her mf fan fiction so far.) Does it get in the way of the stories she wants to tell about young women? Is it something about the way she’s using YA genre conventions?
It does feel a little weird talking about her work on Tumblr where I know she has an account (which I even follow) but presumably she isn’t doing name searches out here.

I was going to go to bed, really, and then I saw that ep 8 of Moonlight Chicken was up...yeah I wasn't sleeping.
So I've watched it now.
As I expected/hoped it was basically entirely fluff. And, yes I think that's what was called for and yet I'm somehow a little underwhelmed?
Me working through my feelings about it under the cut.
IDK IDK I feel like the last episode was a little messy. Like, I'm happy enough, I like where it left everyone, but it didn't hit PERFECTLY for me. Or possibly just a bit of a letdown after the tour de force of ep 7.
That's just my initial emotional reaction. I think partly because they covered SO MUCH time in this ep, months and months we don't get to REALLY see a lot.
It does feel a little strange HOW VERY grudging they were with the kisses, not giving us any real kisses for Heart/Li Ming and only the very last scene for Jimwen.
Actually I think I know exactly what it is. I feel like we didn't get to see the transition from Wen "waiting" to be let in to the moment he is let in. Like we have ep 7 where they are right on the brink. And then it jumps a lot in time and the next thing we really get is Jim introducing Wen as his boyfriend. So it feels like it happened offscreen, that moment we've been waiting for.
Because they are SO coupley this whole episode and I just don't buy that they just....don't kiss until that last scene? Like months of handholding and cuddling? I don't know if that's how we're meant to interpret it. I don't think so. Because of how the kiss happens. Wen doesn't react like it's a huge deal. Just a sweet kiss on the couch.
So we don't get to see the moment that holding back gives way, when Jim finally gives the okay. Or if that is what that moment was supposed to be, it was not clear. IDK. IDK.
On one hand I get it. This last episode was juggling a LOT of stories and stuff to wrap up. But I feel like...Jimwen got a little short shrift of it in the end.
IDK, I need to sit on it some. I intend to write a rec post for the show tonight sometime, and my mixed feelings about the final episode don't change the fact that I loved it and want literally everyone to watch it. I guess I just really wanted it to be perfection...

YYH LA EP 5 THOUGHTS
!!Spoilers Under Cut!!
Oh wow! That's a lot of roundworms.
Gasp! Is this Toguro's Back story?
Hahahah!!! The Black Black Club is fleeing
Kaiko is my fucking hero for throwing that fire hydrant.
Damn Koenma! Didn't know you could do that.
I want to know how Sakyo came to know about Koemna in this version of the story.
Love the last Bet
I recoiled when Toguro punched Kurama in the face. They are doing a wonderful job at making these fights look painful.
ET crawling on the ceiling is so good. But how dare he call Genkai ugly!!!!!
Toguro's final form is just as disturbing as I imagined.
I do love how obvious they are mak8ng the parallels between Toguro and Yusuke's triggers to unlocking power.
Kuwabara's sacrifice was OK, but I feel like they had time to do it better. If someone hadn't seen YYH before they wouldn't understand how deep that was. I should have been moved to tears. I cry very easily to begin with. Also Toguro calling the cast Yusuke's friends feels underwhelming due to the speed of the show. But Netflix wasn't going to give them more than 2 seasons so I understand the reason behind the rush.
Lol Hiei, after not having that deal with Shigure, still refusing to tell Yukina he is her brother is so him. Little tsudere bastard. <3
So glad they kept Toguro choosing the "worst hell". That kind of self hatred and punisment was integral to his character.
I said this before but I'll say it again. Young and old Genkai is so fucking beautiful.
Kurama playing peace keeper while hiei is being an overprotective brother in the end is funny.
The music was very good during the whole show.
I'm sad we never got to see Jin, Touya, and Chuu. They were such fun characters.
The Toguro Brothers were a little too easy to beat for my taste. I don't feel like they grew enough as fighters or characters to haven beaten a B class demon. I hope they make next seasons stakes harder to overcome like in the anime. And I still want Genkai to come back to life.
The end where the seagul was pecking at ET's head had me deep belly laughing. The only time I laughed aloud durring this show. I need a gift of this!
