Been drinking a lot of relatively exotic stuff lately; going to try to start actually posting about some of it.

Really interesting one tonight - I trust Allagash pretty implicitly but am deeply skeptical of "Belgian-style" anything brewed, well, outside Belgium. Trappist beers have been in steady rotation lately, and nobody else really seems to "get" the style in my experience.

This is interesting though, especially for the money. Not unlike, say, St. Bernardus Tripel aged in oak for a year or two. Great value at under 20 bucks in PA, not the sort of thing you'd want to crush every day but worthwhile on a cold winter night like this one.

Suitably classy bottle, too, with a proper Chimay-style champagne cork; that counts for something too.

Side by side of Christmas Ales. First up was Breckenridge Brewery Christmas Ale. This is a smooth, malty beer. Next up was St. Bernardus Christmas Ale. Also very tasty but sweeter than the Breckenridge. Was glad to revisit both of these, but overall I preferred the Breckenridge

#Repost @colvinology St Bernardus Abt 12, an absolutely world class 10% Belgian Quadrupel from Brouwerij St. Bernardus (@stbernardus), and the Master Grade 0RX-013 Gundam Mk-V . Hey. This is one of my favorite beers of all time. I've been drinking it pretty much since I got into beer, and it's been a while since I reviewed it, so let's do an update. The nose is dark and malty, with aromas of dark rye bread, molasses, caramel, roasted malts, dried fruit, and Belgian yeast. The sip has a malty smoothness that I've seen a lot of beers emulate, but very few successfully replicate. The sip starts off with a malty, almost sweet brown sugar and molasses flavor, along with just a bit of burnt sugar bitterness. Flavors of raisins and dates pour in afterwards and a nice, hefty hit of rum-soaked rye bread shows up right towards the end. Those bitter flavors stay mild, but linger between sips, where they meet the last of those leftover bread and fruit flavors and melt into a boozy, warming finish. One of the first styles of beer I knew I really loved was Belgian Trappist ales. Bernardus then, has the benefit of not just being one of the best quadrupels I've ever had, but also being freely available literally anywhere with a decent beer selection. I honestly can't think of a bottle shop I've been to in the last 10 years that didn't have some Bernardus on the shelf. What I'm saying is, if you haven't had this one, I'm reasonably certain just about everyone in several countries can go out and basically trip over some. There's not much else to say here; some beers don't age well, but no matter how much my palate grows or changes, A chilly bottle of this always hits the spot. Truly and completely a world class beer. . Oh, and while I have you...kinda bullshit that the Gundam Mk-V was a P-Bandai release, right? It honestly a kickass kit and nobody can't find one anymore. A bit over a year ago we were at St Bernardus. It was our 6th brewery in three days and like the others, it wasn't what I'd envisioned a Belgian brewery to be before embarking on this highly anticipated pilgrimage.

It was a modern building of concrete and glass complete with a parking garage underneath and an elevator. Sitting surrounded by gently rolling fields of hops and other crops - it was a monument to St Bernardus beer.

We had a delicious meal, a couple of beers, and in between corraling our granddaughters, we gazed at Flanders fields on a perfect day.

Recently, I drank the St Bernardus core beers and their taste was enhanced by my memories.

The 6,8,9,12 all were delicious. I even had a jar of pâté bought at the gift shop there. I'd thought to round out the evening with the Abt Christmas beer but alas I didn't have one! THAT will be remedied!

Lol the drinking session above was a few weeks ago. Tonight the remedy.

I've got bacon wrapped scallops in the oven and I'm counting down the last days of 2022 eating and drinking like there's no consequence.

De Paradijskerk aan de Nieuwe Binnenweg, 1937.

In 1647 stichtte kapelaan Bernardus Hoogewerff een nieuwe kerkplek in Rotterdam, omdat de schuilkerk aan de Oppert (HH. Laurentius en Maria Magdalena of Oppertse Kerk) te klein was geworden. Hij deed dit in zijn geboortehuis genaamd Het Paradijs, gelegen in de oude binnenstad tussen de Slijkvaart (later Lange Torenstraat) en de Delftsevaart, niet ver van de St. Laurenskerk. De kerk werd gewijd aan Petrus en Paulus, en stond in het begin ten dienste van de klopjes, maar werd later in 1649 door Philippus Rovenius erkend als een zelfstandige gemeente.

In 1718 werd aan de Lange Torenstraat op de plaats van een te klein geworden kapel een nieuwe schuilkerk gebouwd die een jaar later gereed kwam. De kerk werd ingericht met beeldhouwwerken van Alexander Dominicus Pluskens. Bij het Utrechts schisma van 1723 koos de parochie samen met haar zusterparochie van de Oppertse Kerk de kant van het Utrechtse kapittel, waardoor zij ging behoren tot de Oud-Bisschoppelijke Clerezie (later Oud-Katholieke Kerk van Nederland). Pas toen het gebouw in 1901 een nieuwe voorgevel kreeg was het van buitenaf als kerk herkenbaar.

In 1907 werden er verzakkingen en vermolming van het hout van de galerijen geconstateerd waarna de kerk wegens bouwvalligheid niet meer gebruikt kon worden. Men besloot naar ontwerp van architect Petrus Augustinus Weeldenburg aan de Nieuwe Binnenweg een nieuw kerkgebouw te doen verrijzen. In 1908 werd met de bouw begonnen en in op 30 juni 1910 werd de nieuwe kerk geconsacreerd door mgr. N.B.P. Spit, bisschop van Deventer en pastoor van de Paradijskerk.

De kerk valt op door zijn twee torens in barokstijl die beide 50 meter hoog zijn. Slechts in de rechter toren bevinden zich luidklokken. De eerste klok is in 1960 door parochianen geschonken bij het vijftigjarig bestaan van de Paradijskerk. Tot die tijd had de kerk geen klokken. De vier luidklokken worden met de hand geluid.
