Day 10: Politics
Day 10 of the 30 Day Star Wars OC Challenge from @smuggler-captain that I’m doing with @lessdenied! Previous posts are tagged with #30dayswchallenge.
Those of you keeping score at home might have noticed this is two in one day, but I had to play catchup from being sick over the weekend. Enjoy a double-helping of Teh’s cynicism and unhealthy attitudes toward the social contract!
Let’s talk politics. Are they solidly on the side of the Republic or the Sith Empire or are they neutral? What are your character’s political opinions? (Ideas for topics: slavery, the Jedi, the Sith, the Outer Rims, the Dark Council, the Republic Senate, etc.) What issues do they prioritize, and what issues do they ignore? Do they desire to do something to change politics or do they not bother? Do they trust their political leaders?
“Woohoo. Yay. The Republic. Hoorah. Thousands of years of history and democracy and happy smiling people where nothing bad has ever happened. Sure. Whatever.
“Look, I do a fair amount of work for the Republic; their money spends just as good as everybody else’s. And yeah, I’ll admit, usually they don’t ask me to do anything that I’ve got any moral objections to—as opposed to a lot of the work I pick up in the Outer Rim or Hutt Space or even when I’ve dabbled in work for the Empire, back when the Sith and Republic were one big happy Vaylin-fighting family. That’s a, whaddayacallit, an ‘intangible benefit’ of contracting with the Republic.
“And fine, yes, the Republic is objectively a better place to live—particularly as a criminal and a non-human—than a lot of places, starting with the Sith Empire. But that’s not exactly a high bar to clear, amirite? 'The Galactic Republic: Not quite as awful as the face-melting alien-hating slave-taking genocidal shitheads.' Doesn't exactly send me sprinting for my local recruiting station, ya know?
“What I’m not down with is all this fanaticism about the Republic and the Jedi and this almost religious attitude toward them. Yeah, the Jedi try to be good, but at the end of the day, they’re still just people. And the Republic tries to be just and fair, but THE REPUBLIC isn’t actually its own entity wished into being by people’s lofty thoughts about Democracy and Fairness and Equality. The Republic’s a government, which means it’s a bunch of people in power, and people in power always use that power to stay in power.
“Look, I’m not one for grandiose abstract concepts, or pretending that those things are real and tangible. Abstractions don’t help you when you’re in trouble or protect you from people who wanna hurt you. It’s people who do that, good people driven by compassion and conscience. The Jedi and the Republic didn’t invent those things, and you can find ‘em everywhere across the Galaxy, even in the Empire. Same thing with the Sith: They don’t have a monopoly on being shitheads, and the Republic has its fair share of ‘em, too.
“So yeah, call me disillusioned or whatever, but in my experience with politics, it’s worth precisely fuck-all. A government that abandons its ideals when they’re not convenient isn’t worth unquestioning loyalty. (For that matter, no one and nothing’s worth blind loyalty.) I’ll take care of the people around me and trust ‘em to do the same. If the Republic wants to do something good for the people of the Galaxy, awesome. But I’m not gonna hold my breath, ya know? You wanna do something good for your neighbors, your family, your planet, whatever, go do something. Voting for some politician and patting yourself on the back doesn’t actually count as ‘doing something.’”

Favourite Star Wars Characters
So, in no particular order, here’s a list of some of my fav Star Wars characters, because why not:
Ahsoka Tano: In Year 12 (final year of high school), instead of studying like I was supposed to be for my final exams, I decided to watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars for the first time. While I had previously seen the film that came out with the series years prior, this was my first time delving into the actual series. And my goodness, it blew me away. I fell in love with the style quickly despite being put off from it in marketing, and the way it felt cinematic mixed with the music and energy made me wish I had started watching it earlier. However, something I did not expect to like as much as I did was Ahsoka Tano (Yep, it took me this long to get to her). While in the movie she might not have come off as the best character, the way she grew on me, and in the show, really made a huge impact on me. And the way Ashley Eckstein portrayed Ahsoka, with the quippy banter between her and Anakin mixed with the emotion she brought in the more serious arcs just... Just wow. I love her story in TCW, and was ecstatic to find out she would be in SW Rebels to continue her story and man, she’s the best. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader: Yep. The man, the legend, the center of Lucas’s Saga, Lil’ Ani himself. The whole tragedy of him is, of course, a very prominent arc for his character. And man, while people may not like the prequels, the way Anakin falls to the dark side is very... poetic(?) and I love how his mental state is portrayed. Especially in TCW, where you get to see how he interacts with fellow Jedi, where you see how he views the Jedi Order and their rules, how the war shaped his life and - I could go on, but I’ll do that later. I’m just word vomiting at this point.  Doctor Aphra: While quite a new addition to the Star Wars canon, I love her. When I describe her to people, I usually just say “Space Indiana Jones”, but to merely say that is an understatement. She is a rogue archeologist who loves money, and will do anything (including not only messing with the OT trio, but DARTH VADER) to score some credits. But that’s not to say she’s entirely motivated by money. While a bit big-headed at times, she can have that classic heart of gold, but only ends up ruining all of her relationships with those she meets anyway. I just find her to be an extremely fun and complex character to follow. Regardless of whether or not whatever I’ve said makes sense or not, GO AND READ ABOUT THE AWESOME DOCTOR CHELLI APHRA.  Finn (FN-2187): Oh boy, let me tell you that his character was the stand out to me in TFA. Why is that? While in many canon stories there are Imperial agents that do defect and go to the Rebellion/New Republic, having a SOLDIER of all people to defect just amazed me. This is someone who had been kidnapped, brainwashed and then raised by the First Order. With all that, you’d think he’d be a mindless drone like the rest of the FO Stormtroopers. But no. He sees the horrors of the Jakku village slaughter and is traumatised by it, and knowing full well what would happen to him if he was caught, he defected WITH a prisoner no less. And the journey he goes through with Rey when they meet is awesome. He learns he can trust. He sees that there is hope. HE STANDS UP TO TEH EVIL HE WAS RAISED BY. Anyway, Go Finn.  Well, I don’t want to make the longest post with every character, so I’ll probably do some more of these lists later on.
