The editors of Xenoanthropology Today humbly submit for the delectation of all participants of the Star Trek Potluck 2021:
The Cake is a Lie
The Significance of Gastronomic Rituals in Groups of Nascently Sentient Emergency Holograms. A Case Study.
By K’xae’Rinn enK’tal of the Greater Anthropological Institute at the Ancient and Venerable Hhon-mak’tih University of Southern Kendris
From the Abstract:
In this paper, I present the results of a month-long anthropological observation of a group of five sentient Emergency Holograms working on a privately owned commercial freighter. Their varied interactions with food and drink reveal a wide spectrum of cognition, ranging from purely pre-programmed Performance (as defined by O’Leary, 2385) to highly self-motivated attempts at Individuation (ibid.). By highlighting these often subtle differences, a clear picture emerges: The consumption of food and drink as well as the participation in gastronomic rituals is not only an effect of emerging sentience in Emergency Holograms, but can even serve as a tool of the same.
Editor’s Note: Due to unforseen technical difficulties that, and we cannot stress this enugh, have nothing to do with the recent tribble infestation of our publisher’s central server halls, this paper will have to be published in several stages. We aim to finish publication before the end of this year’s potluck, but the publishers have asked us to remind our readers that academic journals can sometimes be beset by unforseen crises that cause delays in the release of journal contributions.
Once again, our publisher would like us to emphasize that if there were tribbles loose in their corporate headquarters (which is still an entirely unproven rumour), this would not impact their ability to function in any way. And it certainly wouldn’t be the result of a targeted strike by activists dissatisfied with the publisher’s attitude towards the personhood of artificial beings.
Furthermore, the publishers wish it to be known that they had been planning all along that this special edition of Xenoanthropology Today should highlight recent research into holographic sentience and the legal rights and status of sentient holograms. Any claims of connections between delays in publishing, nonexistent tribbles, and a sudden change in corporate attitudes towards holo-sentience will be regarded as slander and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Thank you for your understanding, Happy @startrekpotluck, and Guten Appetit.

“Fandom is a Potluck Dinner”
Hello friends, it’s that time of year again!
Grab a plate, pull up a chair, and consider yourself enthusiastically invited to StarTrekPotluck2021!
The challenge is to create a piece of fanwork that is food or drink themed, and based within the realms of the Star Trek universe. If you’re interested in joining in on the Potluck, here’s what you need to know:
What do I do?
Pick a type of food or drink, a meal time or a place where nourishment is served/prepared, then create a fanwork around that place/event/object.
It can be any type of fanwork, for example; fanfic, gifs, fanvid, fanart, poetry, podfic. The only constraints are that it needs to be set within Star Trek (any series), and it must follow the theme of food/drink.
When do I do it?
Choose a publishing date between 1st August and 14th August. (Multiple works can be hosted on the same day if necessary. The more the merrier!)
How do I do it?
1. Pick a Star Trek fandom, or a mash-up of Trek fandoms. (Please do not submit crossovers with non-Star-Trek fandoms.)
2.Message this blog with your chosen date, the Star Trek fandom(s) you’ve picked, and the type of fanwork you’ll be producing.
3. Message this blog for any questions / changes etc.
4. Post your delicious fanwork on your chosen date.
5. Message this blog with the details of where your fanwork is posted, and tag your post with #startrekpotluck2021
6. If posting on AO3, add your fanwork to the StarTrekPotluck2021 Collection.
7. Follow this blog for updates!

The editors of Xenoanthropology Today wish to announce the publication of part 2 (of 3) of the popular article
An Excerpt:
While holographic sentience has recently garnered increasing attention from researchers in the fields of computer ethics (see e.g. Ephix and Eriban, Yul et al.) and cognitive science (see e.g. Fimbe et al., Tennox and Tennox), cultural questions have largely been ignored. The only real study of the cultural and behavioural anthropology of pre-sentient and emergently sentient holograms conducted thus far was the seminal paper on Performance vs. Individuation by O’Leary. For her research, O’Leary observed fifty Emergency Holograms on various points of the Zimmerman-Barclay-Scale, acting in non-emergency situations. These might be routine maintenance tasks, discussions with their crewmates* about duty assignments, or even interactions with the crew or each other completely outside their designated operational parameters. O'Leary was able to determine that with an increase in sentience (quantified by an increase of the rating on the Zimmerman-Barclay-Scale), patterns of and especially motivations for behaviour shifted in subtle but significant ways.
---
* The question of ownership in the context of sentient holograms is a highly contentious issue that this paper does not have the capacity to tackle adequately. For this reason, I refer to crewmates rather than using a loaded term like ‘owners’. It is important to acknowledge, however, that the precarious legal situations of many newly or almost sentient holograms is untenable, and we urgently need sweeping reforms that go beyond the lukewarm preservation for the status quo achieved at Ishigaki.
Editor’s Note
We would like to thank everyone who sent their kind wishes in these times of tribulation. Despite our best efforts, publication of this paper will continue to require more time than originally assumed.
Our publishers would like to remind everyone that any images of server rooms with partially devoured cables currently being circulated on the web and used for memes of “spot the tribble” are pure fabrications and in very poor taste. Any delays in the publication process are the result of perfectly normal fluctuations in the academic workflow.
On a more personal note, the editors would like to remind everyone that there is nothing funny about bringing tribble plushies to work and hiding them in break room cupboards. If one more person is sent home with a nervous breakdown over finding a furry infestation behind the tea bags, we won’t be able to publish the next episode on deadline!
Thank you all very much for your patience, and we hope to keep educating you further in the future!
