A YOUNG CAROLINE
Caroline Hodgson’s story doesn’t begin in Australia but in Germany, where she was born in 1951.[1] At the age of twenty she married George Studholme Hodgson and that same year the couple migrated to Melbourne, Australia.[2] Studholme was reunited with his brother and the two began a short-lived business together before John moved to Sydney.[3] Caroline had formed a close friendship with Studholme’s sister-in-law Elizabeth Jane and the two maintained correspondence throughout the years that followed.[4] Less than a year after their migration, Studholme gained employment as a policeman in Victoria and was stationed out in Mansfield as a mounted constable.[5]
Caroline did not follow her husband and instead remained in the city running a boarding house, under the 1870 Married Woman’s Property Act, she could legally own property separately from her husband.[6] Prior to entering the sex-work industry, Caroline was a member of the middle-class and was well aware of the stigma surrounding prostitution but the lucrative nature of the trade clearly persuaded her.[7] An early photograph (shown above) shows her in a simple dress, resting on the ledge of a balcony with a look of innocence about her. She looks quite young and exudes femininity with her tight locks gathered into a bow and a choker made of velvet adorning her neck.[8]
Caroline was just over the age of twenty one when she launched her first brothel in 1873, in the following decade she purchased the two adjacent properties and all three were located on Lonsdale Street, within Melbourne’s thriving sex work district known as Little Lon.[9] She also owned a home in St Kilda and two cottages in Middle Park.[10] During her separation from Studholme, there were rumours Caroline was involved in a relationship with composer Alfred Plumpton but nothing was ever proved.[11] She had no biological children, her only daughter Irene Hodgson was adopted but rumoured to have been fathered by Plumpton.[12] If that were to be true her adopted status may have been fabricated as a means of protection from scrutiny and shame but it is also possible that Irene may have been the child of a prostitute working for her mother.[13] Caroline kept her daughter far away from the district of Little Lon, Irene lived at her mother’s property on York St, St Kilda.[14]
Studholme and Caroline reunited in 182 when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and she put him up in one of her properties, giving him a peaceful escape in which to spend his final years.[15] Perhaps it was due to his wife’s generosity that Studholme made amendments to his will just two months before he passed, revoking a request for £1000 to be given to Agnes Chatsworthy, his carer, and assigned the sum to Caroline instead.[16] Upon Studholme’s death on February 7 1893 Caroline Hodgson received a total of £1907 in currency, valuables and shares.[17] Two years later, she married again but the union was short-lived and she divorced Jacob Pohl after 11 years.[18]
By 1874 Caroline Hodgson was going by her sobriquet ‘Madame Brussels’, perhaps it was inspired by the city she and Studholme visited on their honeymoon, a reminder of a future interrupted by her migration to Melbourne.[19]

So I wrote an essay on fallout if anyone is interested
Essay 2: Summary and Strong Response
Summary:
In “Fallout 4 Has Aged Beautifully. You Should Play it Again,” published on January 31, 2023, by The Washington Post, Billy Studholme, a writer for The Post, argued that you should play the game Fallout 4 again because of its good graphics, combat system, and crafting system. Studholme (2023) stated that in early 2022, he had revisited the game and that he hadn’t played the game in seven years. He argued that “2015’s Fallout 4 might be the best game in the franchise, and even one of the best open-world role-playing games ever made”. (Studholme, 2023) The author supported his argument with his opinions of the many things he loved about the game.
Studholme (2023) stated that it can’t be argued just how much better the combat system in Fallout 4 is compared to the other installments in the franchise. He claimed that the Gunplay is more dynamic and responsive, which lets you play the game like a first-person shooter. Studholme (2023) said that in other installments of the franchise, it was tempting to use V.A.T.S. (The Vault Tec- Assisted Targeting System), which is a pinpoint accuracy aiming system. The author then specified that in Fallout 4, he could enjoy combat without it.
Studholme (2023) then went on to talk about the new crafting system the developers of the game implemented. Sudholme claimed that the cool stuff that can be found in Fallout 4 had uses for the player. He went on to say that “Wonderglue is adhesive; Deathclaw hands are leather; Toy cars have screws”. Everything that you can pick up in this game would have a use in crafting, building, and more. (Studholme, 2023) Moreover, these things could be used to make the new Missile turrets or gun mods, things that the past games of the Fallout franchise have not had. Studholme (2023) also said that there were wild ingredients in the Commonwealth wasteland that could be made into consumables like drugs that give special abilities. The developers of the game had built upon the crafting system in past games to make the current system that the game Fallout 4 has now.
The last point that Studholme (2023) wrote about was the game's graphics. He claimed that “Fallout 4 is just plainly a beautiful game”. (Studholme, 2023) Studholme (2023) argued that the graphics were crisp, stunning, and much more. Everything had a story to tell. It could be the skeleton soldier who was leaned up against a tank with his pistol in his hand. Or the fragments of notes and information that could be found on paper or computer terminals. Finally, Studholme (2023) argued that seeing the fantastic graphics, the improved crafting system, and the overhauled combat system really “Elevates the experience enormously.”
Strong Response:
Although Studholme (2023) argued that Fallout 4 may be one of the best role-playing games, Fallout 4 is just a mediocre game based on what I have played in the game. Fallout 4 did not meet my and many others' expectations. The other games in the franchise have had better stories, dialogue options, gameplay, and more. The graphics were mediocre, the combat system is one of the game’s weak spots, and the crafting system was confusing.
When Fallout 4 was released in 2015, the game was highly anticipated. The trailers for the game were great, hyping the story, factions, and, most of all, graphics. The last game, Fallout: New Vegas, was released in 2010 and had been optimized for low-performance consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Fallout 4, however, was optimized for the new Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which were high-performance consoles. The game developers had even created a new engine to support its new graphics. But my expectations, along with many others, were crushed. The game looked grainy; the character's hair looked like straw or dry ramen noodles. The wasteland felt dull, tree leaves were made out of 2D pictures, and shrubbery looked fake. Many people believed that the graphics were so bad that mod makers in the community decided to take making good graphics into their own hands. Mods after mods were released by community members to make the game’s poor graphics better. While the game had decent graphics for its time, many other games were released around the same time as Fallout 4, like Assassin's Creed Syndicate, which have much better graphics.
Another point that Fallout 4 disappointed the fans of the series was its combat system. V.A.T.S (Vault-Tec- Assisted Targeting System) had been a critical point in every other game but was completely changed in Fallout 4. V.A.T.S. was the system that allowed the player to make shots on specific body parts. In this game, V.A.T.S no longer froze your enemies so you could get a critical shot on them; they were running at you in slow motion. Long gone were the perks where a Mysterious Stranger or a Lady of Luck would come to help you at random times in V.A.T.S. Now, they would never, even if you had both perks. Critical shots were now built up instead of based on where you shot your enemy. Critical shots no longer killed your enemies; now they just did more damage than a standard shot. In other entries in the series, combat was built upon V.A.T.S., but in Fallout 4, it is easier not to use the system than to use it.
Crafting had been done very differently in other games than in Fallout 4. Crafting had been optional in the games, unlike in Fallout 4. Crafting benches had always been a thing in every game, but now, to be able to fix any items at all, you needed to have every single different kind of crafting bench the game had to offer. You could no longer use the things in your inventory to fix it while in the inventory. You would now have to travel to a specific crafting bench to fix it. If you didn’t have the materials to build the crafting bench in your settlement, you would have to find one or forge for the materials to be able to create one. This crafting system encourages picking up junk items in case you need them to make something. Junk items were heavy; they added weight to your inventory and would make you over-encumbered. And in a game that required you to keep weight off your back so you didn’t lose stamina, this crafting system made it really hard to do so. Crafting could have been made so much better if the developers had put most of the crafting into one interface instead of multiple.
The gameplay of Fallout 4 could be one of the best in the series if the graphics were updated, the combat system was restored to old, and the crafting system was condensed. The game itself has a great deal of content that is worth playing but is blurred by these issues. The storyline is decent, and the non-player character interactions are excellent. The voice acting for the game had been better than any of the other entries to the series before Fallout 4. A confusing crafting and combat system will affect how people play the game and steer people to other games. But for a game to be great, it needs to please the player's eye, be easy to play, and be simple enough to be understood.
