The Stymphs' Symbolism and the Storian's Interference
All right, here's our equivalence:
The Stymphs = Fate
Ok, so, with the girls in book one:
Agatha and Sophie are carried off by a Stymph, and they are thrown into their respective schools. No choice. No say in the matter. They've lost their agency, completely.
They are mastered by a Stymph, by fate. Conquered.
Then, the shift happens. They become the masters of their own fate, in riding the Stymph, in steering on top of the Stymph, into the School Master's Tower.
By TLEA, again, their relationship to the Stymphs changes. They're a little beholden to them and fate, in becoming who they are. Fate and the particular Stymph's original actions, its involvement in their kidnapping, I mean, shaped them both, ultimately. The girls are also beholden to the Stymphs for helping them, by not obeying "Rafal" when they help the archer students and Merlin during the second Great War.
Then, for the prequels:
Who is master of the Stymphs? Rafal, of course.
Yet, Rhian is the "author of own misfortune," or fate.
Rafal is the original master of the Stymphs. In a way, Rafal was destined to become Fate, to become the Balance, had he managed to live long enough to be the One.
Because, he was about to be named the One True School Master, and through the Schools, he would have been master of the Woods' fate, been able to willfully control (or indirectly influence, through the curriculum, the students' educations, and how prepared they would have been, should their fairy tales begin) the fate of all the Woods, all its possible futurities, in theory, to an extent.
But, really, it's the Pen that is Fate, not Rafal himself, when it really comes down to the truth.
However, Rhian disrupted "fate," or the Storian's plans, by being the cause of his brother's death.
And, when he was left with the Stymphs he "inherited," he probably couldn't quite automatically rein them in. I think he had to tame them, or find a literal spell to mollify them with, to get them under his control. Probably symbolically because he was never meant to be Fate or the One in the first place.
And so, of course, Fate's attendants (the Stymphs) wouldn't have followed him willingly, at least, not right away because the ending simply wasn't meant to be, but just so happened to happen nonetheless. (I know the Stymphs' behavior actually must originate from the fact that Stymphs supposedly only like Evers, but I'm looking at this from an angle that's outside of the narrative, and I don't need to rely on the in-universe reasoning at the moment.)
Was there a line after the climax of Fall about this at all? About the Stymphs being disobedient toward Rhian or outright loud and unmanageable, or am I misremembering?
Anyway, Rhian became master of Fate, of the Woods, in becoming the sole School Master. But that only happened when there was no one else left to assume the role. He was the only option, sort of a second-choice. Or, possibly even third, when we consider Pan as the hypothetical third candidate to be the One. Rhian was the default, sadly enough, the lone, surviving one. He wasn't even meant to be School Master, the rightful One, yet he had to be chosen. The Storian was compelled to because there was no one else.
Thus, the "ownership" of the Stymphs and of Fate was transferred over to Rhian.
And remember, once, Rhian was Fate's personal punching bag. He suffered a lot, for his naivete, and from some external causes, like Hook and Vulcan, sort of, even if he was wrongly influenced by the end of it all. And yes, while many events were partly his fault, they also may not have been. The plot could have been the result of very poor happenstance and intersections of the times the brothers lived in, as, we can observe all the turbulence in Rise, during that one particular school year.
Oh! And I wonder if the Stymphs forevermore missed Rafal, their original master? Did they show any signs of missing him? I'm not sure.
But, I am sure that they knew Rhian replaced Rafal because they can read souls, tell them apart, they way they seemed to instinctually read Agatha's, Sophie's, and Aladdin's souls, to know which Schools they belonged to.
I don't think there's any direct evidence of the Stymphs' mourning though. Did they ever screech, or cry out, as if in pain, like deprived animals? I suppose I could imagine that plausibly happening, with how they were left behind...

Clarissa recounting her arrival in first year as a new student at the School for Good: And you Reader?  How was your arrival at school?  *Nostalgic smile*
Reader: To be honest, it was a little arbitrary, the Stymph that dropped me there at least circled the two schools three times before throwing me into one of them by pure chance. I landed at the school for Good.  *Calmly drinks his tea*
Clarissa in shock: How come I've never heard of such a thing?!
Leonora: Wait.... You could have known me and we would be married long before!  Why did you have to fall into the school for Good!?

thoughts on the movie, pt. 2
spoilers ahead (for real this time)
going to make a bullet point list of all the things i noted about the movie
i got up to watch this at 3am est and i have a full day of school today so idk. wish me luck i guess
i think it's a cop-out to make honora mean, actually, because it kind of defeats the point of the whole honora/vanessa and sophie/agatha thing. i know it's easier to exemplify sophie's Evil in the books because we can hear her inner monologue, but she wasn't even that Evil in the movie before they dropped her in the school
like she was kinda bitchy sometimes, sure, but all the "Evil" and "violent" things she did were in defense of agatha so i don't know if that really counts
THEY MADE VANESSA MIXED SO THEY COULD DO THE SISTERS THING. CALLING IT NOW
some lines of dialogue made me cringe too hard. i like the bit with eric or whatever his name was in the beginning but the "god i hate this town" had me foreseeing the reviews
some of the cgi looked fine and then some of it just. looked bad. i think it was really funny how they tried so hard to do primarily practical effects, and you could see it in things like the Trial by Tale, but i feel like it was kind of counteracted by the blood magic storyline? it doesn't matter if your whole Trial is practical effects if half your movie is full of ugly cgi pools of blood and nondescript magical energy blasts
speaking of nondescript magical energy blasts and bad cgi, rafal was so fucking stupid. like what
that fight at the beginning with the kit young duplicates? guys. guys come on. when he said "blood magic" i was like No.
idk i guess it just didn't really coalesce for me
i thought i would be able to contend with kerry washington's dovey performance in this movie but i really generally couldn't, especially after they basically decimated the "agatha's been beautiful all along" storyline
she was a little too manic for my taste. i liked her at some points and at other points she was kind of pissing me off
that anemone backstory made me laugh. you go girl
OK A CHANGE I LIKED: i thought gregor charming was corny. i thought opening a grocery store was corny. i thought his whole deal was a bit stupid. BUT HAVING TEDROS KILL HIM?? MY JAW DROPPED THAT WAS SO MUCH WORSE THAN THE BOOK
like having ted kill a random child is bad, obviously, but having him kill a recently mogrified established character was like WHAT
the modern music really fucked it up for me. i think this movie would have been just fine with the score and the special song they recorded for the credits. i think it made it way cornier than it needed to be and i really couldn't forgive it by the end
like you HAD to have a verse of brutal in there? this is not do revenge i thought i was hallucinating
sophie makeover scene demolished (which is sad but whatever) but what really got to me more was the fact that there was no nuance to any of the supporting cast at all? like how are you going to tell me that hester spits sparks in her face one day and then within the week is bowing down to her.
i feel nitpicky but it really is just the basics of a character. tell me why anadil and dot were literally indistinguishable in their character. portrayed exactly the same. sort of hester too.
the soman cameo actually did make me jump. like i already made a joke about this but i did a double take
i think tagatha was cute and i liked how they actually talked more before this but i think this could have been executed similarly while still keeping the whole "agatha is a witch" thing. case in point: they become friends early on, agatha tries to protect gregor-stymph, tedros kills gregor-stymph and gets confused why she's protecting a stymph and comes to the conclusion that "she must be a witch", sophie takes advantage of it to get with tedros, etc. tension. (i might be insane for this so if i am let me know)
i don't think it would have taken much to establish it as the snow ball and the no ball and i think sophie's point would have been more effective if they did
cate blanchett has a nice voice but i didn't vibe with the inconsistent storian narration; it sort of just felt like she was interjecting to explain things to us that the audience at the test screening had a dubious understanding of. like in the tower it was fine but throughout the rest of the movie it was sort of irritating that the movie assumed we couldn't infer what was going on and very rarely did what was going on ACTUALLY require background narration, even if you hadn't read the books
sophie had a very inconsistent characterization in the movie. agatha was consistent but sophie basically switched from good to evil overnight. i understand the point was she felt betrayed and was swayed to evil, but i think the movie made her stupider than she was known to be in the books and underestimated her intelligence, which makes me sad
i felt like the movie utilized a lot of tools to try and explain what was going on to the audience (rafal's monologues, storian narration, dovey and lesso) instead of just trusting that we could understand it on our own so it came off as very exposition heavy but not in like. an understandable way
very frustrated with the consistent erasure of queer characters. hester and anadil confirmed for like a split second in a scene where they dance together at the no ball, but they aren't established enough for the general audience to know that they're queer and it definitely could just come off as best friends
dovesso for a single goddamn second at the end where they look like they're about to kiss and then just go for the most awkward hug in the entire world which just??? really got to me. the whole lady lesso thing was fine, i guess, but i was really hoping that dovey and lesso's enlarged presence in the movie would lead to some depth to their book-based friendship. i know that's my fault for expecting that, but like. i didn't expect "blood magic" either so whatever
part of the problem with the queer character erasure too though is that they were never really that defined in the books (thanks soman) so a lot of it is just really suspicious and doesn't end up REALLY panning out, so they had an excuse to ignore it in the movie
noticed how they made the agaphie kiss at the end very chaste, so that and vanessa being mixed definitely is foreshadowing some sisterhood there
also the line where agatha says "she's like my sister" had me laughing my ass off. they know
i definitely liked sofia wylie the most in this film, but i think sophia anne caruso did the best with what she was given. i think both of them did their best with a rather shallow script.
ANOTHER THING I LIKED: i had my criticism of the no ball scene and i think the ending was rather convoluted and uhhhhh not great in general but i did honestly like the whole "good attacks" thing. i wasn't sure if they were actually going to follow through on the whole good becoming evil and evil becoming good thing but i think they did that well, and sophie's transformation into grand high witch ultimate at the end after her haphazard side-switching was actually okay imo
now did it lead into a stupid-ass castle-crumbling rafal fight? yes. but at least agatha got to fucking STAB HIM WITH EXCALIBUR??? i was hyped. also i thought it was good that rafal explained how he corrupted good and made them vain, that was nice
would have been funny if they did the original book ending but i understand why that wasn't really feasible
overall: mid. that is my review. mid.
i had a good time watching it! i really did! and i read some reviews, and they're about what i expected (which is sort of disappointing but i'll live), but i had a good time and i think that's what really matters here
i'm glad that it wasn't boring and that i'm able to write so much about it and i'll be able to talk about it for a while and follow through on the production of THE SEQUEL THEY MIGHT MAKE LMFAOOOO
THE WORLD WITHOUT PRINCES SETUP????? I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT
hit my limit

How do you think Rhian and Rafal's childhood went? Do you think Rhian or Rafal went through more trauma? Do you think Rhian went through trauma? Do you think something in his past made him the way he is/was? And why do you think Rhian depends on Rafal so much?.
Do you think the Twins past shape them they were they are in Rise / Fall SGE?
I already got my headcanons/theories I want to hear yours.
oh, well, I have some ideas?
Alright, so I think they either were orphans/had no parents and raised themselves mostly, with the exception of a few adults in their lives OR they had neglectful parents. Either one of them or both of them.
I'm saying this based on some observations I noticed. It appears as if Rafal was the one taking care of Rhian. Even when they were children who could barely speak, Rhian was extremely clingy to Rafal. It could easily be the fact that they are twins, and well, were with each other since the very beginning of their existences but also, where are the parents?
No parent is mentioned and Rafal lowkey takes up that role for Rhian.
I have some headcanons, that maybe, they lived in the forest for a long time before becoming School Masters. Perhaps they had like, one or two adult figures who taught them magic, letters, mathematics, and so forth. It could be why Rafal is connected with the stymphs as well. Maybe they even lived close to the Stymph Forest!
Thank you for asking! If you have any other questions, feel free to hit my ask box again or put it in the comments!

„To second chances“//Dovesso oneshot
⚠️!!!!!!SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3!!!!!!⚠️
Clarissa hadn’t noticed the wound at first. She had seen Aric attack his mother and the knife that was dangerously close to piercing her stomach and she had rushed to save her. A few years ago it would have sounded ridiculous to her, an ever saving a never but now, after all that had happened, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world. The good dean would have startled at the ease with which she thrust the stymph bone into the boy’s body if she had been able to think about anything else than getting to her evil counterpart in time but in that moment, the only thing that mattered was protecting her friend.
Now she was kneeling at Lesso’s side, not caring about the state of her dress or the blood and dirt on her skin. She was solely focused on the women on the ground in front of her. But she hadn’t noticed yet that she was too late and when the other dean lifted her hands from her stomach and they came back red and wet, Clarissa let out a cry of despair.
She gently lifted the taller woman into her lap and cradled her tenderly in her arms. A weak cough came from the redhead and with it came more blood. Shaking hands reached up to the blonde’s cheeks, wiping away the tears that were falling. “Hey, don’t cry now, one could almost think you’ll miss me.’’, Lesso’s raspy voice said teasingly. Clarissa’s agitatedly shot back “Stop talking and don’t say things like that, idiot! You’re not going to die.” But it sounded more like she was trying to convince herself. “Sure, whatever you say, princess.”, the evil dean replied before she had another coughing fit.
Feeling her strength fading, she took the other woman’s hands in hers and looked at her softly, “promise me that you’ll take care of the students when I’m not here anymore”. Noises of protest sounded from above but she kept talking, “and see to it that Hort doesn’t do anything stupid.” She let out a quick chuckle but regretted it when she winced in pain. In a more serious voice she added “I’ll miss you, Clarissa, even though you make playing chess thoroughly unenjoyable. You evers and your stupid luck. It was fun though, I’d like to do it again someday.” “And you will.”, Clarissa said, in tears again. “Don’t you dare die now, Lesso!” “Leonora”, came a quiet objection. “What?”, the blonde asked confused. “My name is Leonora.”, she replied and with her last bit of strength, she squeezed the good dean’s hands one last time before her eyes closed and the strained breathing stopped for good.
Clarissa screamed and she cried for this woman who was not only her college and friend but also someone she had loved dearly for years, yet she never had the courage to defy the rules of their world and confess what would be seen as a great sin by most. And Lesso, no, Leonora being the traditional woman she was… There was no hope for them and now she would never get to tell her, even if she wanted to.
She scooped the lifeless body up in her arms and hugged it tight, like she never wanted to let go. ,,Don’t leave me, I can’t lose you.”, she sobbed against the other woman’s neck. But there was no answer, no heartbeat. This was it, the end of their story, before it had even really begun. The yellow clad woman looked down at her friends pale, cold face and she realised that she would never have what she had dreamed of, would never stand beside her, united in love. Wether she wanted to or not, she would have to let go. “Goodbye, my love.”, Clarissa whispered and she lowered her head to place a kiss on Leonora’s cold lips.
She kissed gently, nevertheless it was a kiss full of emotion and the hope she had felt over the years. Hope for comfort and friendship and love and she didn’t stop kissing her until she ran out of breath and all she could do was cry and keep clinging to this shell of the person she loved, no longer filled with life but dead and limp in her arms. Suddenly she felt movement beneath her. She opened her eyes that she had shut, not wanting to accept the reality of the situation and she almost screamed again.
Tired, confused eyes looked up at her. Clarissa could not believe what she saw and she couldn’t get a word out. “Cat got your tongue?”, Lesso asked. “You’re alive.”, the blonde answered. “Thank you for stating the obvious, princess. I thought you’d have a little more to say about me literally coming back from the dead. By the way, why am I alive?”, the evil dean said and with a rise of her eyebrows she noticed blush on her friend’s face. Oh. “Oh.”, she deadpanned and she felt heat rising in her own cheeks. “You woke me with-“ “true love’s kiss.”, Clarissa stated nervously. Leonora smirked “My, my, do you like me, princess?”. Noticing the other woman’s nervousness, she cupped her face with her hands. “You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this, little dove”, she said and pulled the good dean down to her. She looked in her eyes for a moment, looking for a sign of resistance. “Kiss me.”, Clarissa breathed. This was all Lesso needed. She closed the distance between them and nothing had ever felt so right. What had been separated finally reunited, what was once repulsive became pleasant and everything was as it was meant to be.
“You’re quite eager, aren’t you?”, Lesso teased when Clarissa placed kiss upon kiss on her lips. ,,Excuse me but I think you dying in my arms does justify such behaviour. It’s just, seeing you get hurt… never do that again!”, the blonde replied before she kept kissing her true love. Clarissa smiled against the redhead’s lips. Her true love. That thought warmed her heart. They had been given a second chance. Maybe she could have it all.

It was Thursday morning and Y/N was getting ready for breakfast when she saw something fly past her balcony. She frowned before she walked out to see a stymph flying down towards the dirty water before dropping three people in it. Y/N giggled at that before walking back into the room. "What are you giggling about" Sebastian said as he raised his eyebrow. "It's nothing" Y/N said as she grabbed her brush and brushed her hair out. Sebastian just looked at her for a couple seconds before brushing it off.
Y/N made her way to the great hall when an arm slipped through hers. She looked over to see Althea looking at her while smiling. "The full moon is tonight" she said before wiggling her eyebrows causing Y/N's face to flush. Althea giggled as she rested her chin on Y/N's shoulder. "Are you going to tell me who it is now or no" Althea asked and Y/N shook her head causing Althea to pout. They made their way into the great hall to see Snowbell already there sitting down at their usual table. Althea dragged Y/N over and they both sat down causing Snowbell to look up before smiling. "Morning you two" Snowbell said and the two girls said morning back. The others joined a couple minutes later and sat down at the table.
As everyone was eating their food the door bursts open causing everyone to stop and look up. Three figures walked in wearing black and gold kimonos. Everyone watched as the three walked in and over to were the deans were sitting. "Your in charge of the stymphs right" the one with the medium length hair said and Lesso nodded. "You damn birds dropped us in the water ruining our expensive clothes" the girl shouted and Lesso stood up looked unfazed. "That's unfortunate but I don't tell them what to do I just tell them to simply pick up new students" she said as she looked down at the three of them. Everyone went back to eating except for Y/N who just watched. "What are your names wait no let me guess" Lesso started as she put her pointer finger on her chin. "Eternity, Obsidian and Discord children of Ursula am I correct" Lesso said and Y/N choked on her drink when she heard Lesso. Lesso's eyes immediately went over to Y/N as she watched Y/N's help her calm down. "Yes your correct" Eternity said as she looked back at Lesso. "Thought so" Lesso said before she smirked.
"Y/N are you alright" Althea whispered and Y/N nodded her head. Skadi scoffed before she stood up. Y/N's eyes widened in shock and before she could say anything she was being pulled out of the great hall. "Skadi would you stop it's fine" Y/N said as she looked up at Skadi. "No it's not Y/N they shouldn't even be here they should be with their mother" Skadi spat out as their friends followed them. "What's going on" Althea said as she looked at Flounder. "Ursula's kids weren't supposed to come here they were supposed to go to a school under the sea" Flounder said as they looked at Althea. "So this is bad then" she said and Skadi stopped before turning around. "Of course it's bad Althea they could ruin Y/N's life" Skadi shouted causing all of them to stop. They all looked at each other before looking back at Skadi who was shaking with anger. "Someone has to stay with Y/N at all times now" Skadi growled out and Y/N huffed before yanking her wrist free. "That's a little overboard Sky plus I can take care of myself I got powers remember" Y/N said and Skadi was about to speak when Y/N cut her off. "You need to stop being so overprotective of me" she said and Skadi huffed before folding her arms. "I'm just looking out for you" Skadi muttered out as she was looking away. Y/N sighed before grabbing Skadi's hand. "I know you are but at some point I won't need you to" Y/N said softly as Skadi looked at her before frowning. The friends made their way to class after a couple minutes.
Y/N was walking through the garden when she was stopped by someone. "Look who it is" a boy said and Y/N looked up to see Discord standing in front of her smirking. She turned around and saw Eternity and Obsidian standing there smirking as well. "It's a surprise to see you here Y/N" Obsidian said as they stepped towards Y/N who took a step back bumping right in Discord. "Looks like no one is here to save you" Eternity said as Discord grabbed Y/N's jaw from behind. Y/N started panicking and her eyes started flickering causing the three to laugh. "Your little Siren powers won't work on us" Discord whispered into Y/N's ear. Y/N clenched her jaw before head butting Discord causing him to let go. She ducked under Eternity and Obsidian when they tried to grab her before rapidly turning around. She looked at the three who were glaring at her. "You're so going to regret that" Obsidian growled out and before they could take a step towards her, her eyes glowed blue. Before she could use her powers someone put their hands on her shoulders.
"Now what's going on here" Y/N stiffened up when she heard Lesso's voice. Eternity, Obsidian and Discord looked at Lesso standing behind Y/N before rolling their eyes. "I hope you guys aren't trying to kill each other before graduation which is still awhile away" Lesso added as she stroked her thumbs up and down on Y/N's shoulders. "Oh no we were just talking Lady Lesso" Discord said as he put on a fake smile. Y/N clenched her jaw at that and the three just smiled at her. "Well then I think it's time you wrap up your little talk isn't it" Lesso said as she put one of her hands on top of Y/N's head. The two watched the triplets walk off before Lesso pulled away. Y/N turned around and looked up at the Dean who was looking down at her already. "I didn't need your help I was handling it perfectly fine by myself " Y/N said and Lesso raised an eyebrow before smirking. "It didn't look like you were from where I was standing little Siren" she said as she leaned in. Y/N looked down at Lesso's lips before looking away. Lesso stood back up while smirking as she put her hand on top of Y/N's head.
Y/N looked back over when she felt Lesso remove her hand from her head. She saw Lesso walking away before she stopped. "Oh one more thing meet me by the lake tonight and don't be late I don't like being kept waiting" she said before finally walking away.
It was now night time and Y/N was pacing around her room. Skadi was watching in amusement as Y/N paced back and forth. "So you don't know why she asked to meet near the lake" Skadi said and Y/N stopped pacing. Skadi knew full well on why the Dean of Evil asked Y/N to meet near the lake. With Althea and Flounder telling Skadi that Y/N had a vision of kissing someone under the full moon near the lake and when she saw Lesso and Y/N that night she had put two and two together. "Well uh not exactly" Y/N said causing Skadi to roll her eyes knowing that Y/N was somewhat lying. "Just go and meet her what's the worst that can happen" Skadi said and Y/N glared at her. "She's the Dean of Evil anything could happen" Y/N shouted before groaning. Skadi sighed before standing up and walking over to her friend. "Just go would you or I'll drag you there if I have to" Skadi said and Y/N huffed before walking towards the door. She walked out and shut the door behind her causing Skadi to smile. "You guys can come out now" Skadi said and all of Y/N's friends walked out even her Never friends. "She sure is a stubborn one" Osiris said causing the others to agree. They all waited a couple minutes before following Y/N.
Y/N made her way through the halls making sure not to run into any fairies. She made her way out of the good school and headed towards the lake not knowing all her friends were behind her. She walked over to the lake and saw the redhead dean waiting for her. Lesso looked over her shoulder before smiling. She stood up from the bench and watched as Y/N walked over to her. "You're a little late" she said and Y/N started fiddling with her fingers. "Well I was debating whether or not if I should come" Y/N said as she looked out at the lake as it shimmered in the moonlight. "Well looks like you decided to come then" Lesso said as she smiled down at the girl. Y/N looked up at Lesso and raised an eyebrow. "I wouldn't be here standing in front of you if I didn't" she remarked causing the Dean to laugh. "Getting sassy now are we" Lesso said as she took a step closer to Y/N. She grabbed Y/N's chin before leaning down a bit. "Why did you want to meet here" Y/N asked causing Lesso to smirk.
"Just kiss already damnit" Sebastian muttered out. He was about to step out of their hiding place but Leviathan stopped him. "Don't even think about it" Althea said before hitting Sebastian's arm. "I wasn't gonna do anything grand I was just gonna shove Y/N into Lesso" he grumbled out and everyone glared at him. "Not happening" Snowbell said before Skadi shushed them all. "Would you all shut up" she whisper shouted.
"I think you know why I asked you here" Lesso said and Y/N shook her head causing the Dean to roll her eyes. She wrapped her arms around Y/N's waist before pulling her flush against her body. She watched as Y/N's face turned red making her smirk before she leaned in even more. "Now do you " she whispered against Y/N's lips causing a shiver to go down the girl's spine. Y/N looked down at Lesso's lips before looking back up at her eyes. Y/N thought about it before shaking her head no causing Lesso to smirk as she raised an eyebrow. "You're terrible at lying I can see it in your eyes" she said and before Y/N could speak she felt Lesso's lips on hers. She immediately closed her eyes as she kissed back as sparks flew between them.

So, I made this in the middle of the night, I don't really think it's that good, but I decided to post it
Tw:death, blood, mourning,
It could've been stopped
How had it gone so wrong....
Everything had been good...it was perfect...
Aric...
Sophie....
Rafal....
That blasted fairytale....
*a few minutes prior*
Lady Lesso was scrambling for the dagger, her son doing the same, Lady Lesso kicked him and tried to grab the dagger, Aric grabbed her hair and yanked her back,
The heat of the battle around them, the stymphs flying in the sky, the students on their backs, crashing and flying.
Lady Lesso yelled in anger as Aric grabbed the blade and ran to me,, he raised the blade, Lady Lesso, lunged at him, he dug the blade into her side, she continued to scramble, taking the blade and fighting Aric.
Only to fall, once the cries were silent, the stymphs no longer flying, and the students no longer fighting.
Lady lesso lay in my arms, her blood staining her clothes and my hands.
"Leonora, my name is Leonora" and her eyes closed. Her breathing stopped....
I couldve done more. I should've helped....Why didn't I?
Now the meetings run smoothly, the arguments no longer arise, and the nevers no longer fear the evil deans punishments...
I no longer enjoy my friends presence, I no longer watch her fiery red curls bounce, I no longer hear the sound of her cane and heels clicking on the floor as she walked as I desperately craved.
In my dreams I replay the memory, the memory of where it ended....
If only I acted quicker....It could've been stopped.

-second, writing this a day after watching it for the first time and i don’t remember everything
My favorite parts:
- the little scene where they are eating lunch in gavaldon in the beginning(it was so cute and i loved seeing them be actual friends)
-the wish fish/stymph scene(really well done and also tedros was so proud of himself and agatha just straight up punched him)
-all the little tagatha scenes were so cute and i loved that they built them up a little more(especially when they hugged in that basement area)!!
-hester and sophie’s fight(freya is absolutely amazing and i loved seeing the coven support her)
General Thoughts:
- the pacing was a little off and i wish they had kept some of the original stuff(trial, circus, mirror scene)
- i liked that they added the idea that rafal was purposely working against good by making them vain, it was an interesting addition to the balance between good and evil
- I LOVE GREGOR AND IM SO GLAD THEY ADDED HIM
- lesson and dovey were really fun together and anemone was interesting and i like the idea that she’s a lot smarter than she seems
- however, i wish dovey was a bit more kind and more truly good than the surface level stuff
- the new school master stuff was interesting and i love kit young but it felt a little weird(that might just be because it was so different)
- the acting was amazing overall, but the main trio, hester, beatrix, and gregor were really amazing
- i wish we’d seen more of agatha and the coven, but hopefully we’ll get more if they make a second
- speaking of, i’m glad they left it on a sort of cliff hanger so they could make a second if it does well
- but also, HIS ARROW PIERCED THROUGH DIMENSIONS??
- anyway, overall great movie, cried and screamed multiple times, so so so grateful to everyone that worked on it

SPOILER first thoughts on SGE film pt 1
this will be in bullet point but will be quite wordy, and it's just part 1. also not proofread so fair warning! first time giving Actual Opinions and it's just me spitballing but anyone can take it as they wish
listened to the first 4 songs on the OST when it was released, and after watching the movie, the OST still SLAPS
brutal, however, does not slap. as much as I love olivia rodrigo, brutal did not need to be there. and when the ending was okay, the accompanying modern music definitely ruined the okayness. couldn’t stand the credits and I watched all of it hshshsjks
costumes overall are so good. some were questionable (that initial theory that Agatha's poofy pink-purple dress in the trial by tale was early on in the movie and that it represented her not fitting into good that well yet? I believed that, and yea I don’t think it's symbolising anything now), choices in the makeup department are also questionable (hello Sophie nude lip, cannot get over you + never!Tedros facial scars??) - but overall, loved them I swear. Beatrix and Millicent were my favourites
somehow the characters were more… underdeveloped in the movie than they were in the books. a typical and forgivable choice yes, but why add new *characters* for certain one-liners when you could’ve just given them to the existing, underdeveloped ones?? (Chaddick, hi, I’m so sorry. you too Reena, Anadil)
uhhhh story progression. or rather, story fragments they chose to take away that I find are actually important to understand the twist later on? i.e. the whole nemesis thing and the Good and Evil rules. - like yes I totally get that they wanted to be subtle, that they wanted the viewers to be like “oh wow I totally forgot about that” but MAN. people will not remember smth that just seems like ordinary Dovey Being Good. and the nemesis dreams & symptoms weren’t even mentioned! from a non-fan’s perspective, that one wart was nothing. I dunno I dunno but the impact just wasn’t there
speaking of important lines. actually so disappointed “you were beautiful all along” didn’t make it. I understand why they didn’t dwell on it as it would make the [already 2.5hr long] movie dragging but there probably was some other way that I cannot cite right now
that said, I guess they really wanted to shift the message of the books? from messages about inner beauty and breaking standards, it’s really now focused on their friendship and that gray area between good and evil. which is nice in its own way
hahaaaa I did expect that a lot of class scenes would be cut, but erm. we literally only get 3 classes, and one wasn’t that useful. really thought they’d change the coffin scene into smth else that conveyed the message but guess not. again, dragging movie concerns
how could I forget the point of Sophie being Evil. or was she really? Gavaldon Sophie wasn’t that bad. in fact, she seemed like every other teenage girl until she came to the school. her Evil started to show there at least, esp in Room 66 - but that full 180 with Hester. I did not like that. how did they go from Sophie almost killing both Hester and her demon to Hester suddenly being okay with a truce through facials?? just because Sophie got a haircut?? and started being… less princess-looking? please
I’m aware I’m being too critical and nitpicky now so here are some things I liked
I've mentioned the OST and the costumes BUT OH the set! we've seen it all in stills and trailers but it really is as magical <3 kudos to the set design & production team!!!
Gregor Charming. cute. when I saw/heard his name, I remembered seeing it on the OST but I hadn’t listened to it yet. I liked the short character buildup, comedic timings and all, and actually showing the viewers how messed up the school can be with his “expulsion”. also it makes the whole Tedros killing the just-mogrified stymph even more jarring for Agatha
Tagatha! adorable babies. I liked their friendship. definitely the same, if not a little more than what was shown in the books. you can really see how Agatha gets comfortable with him, as does Tedros - cute inside jokes. love that. AND A KISS - I cackled when Tedros said he loved Agatha at the ball. It was a very book!Tedros move and I approve
Trial by Tale was fair. it’s made more minor and more swift but the point was taken across
Anemone's more complex personality and background BIG YES! You go Michelle Yeoh
I also liiiiked The Never Ball! Sophie turning up as a hag, the whole Nevers become Evers and vice versa, and the fight that broke out between the schools. Very nice, very good, and the modern music here was g
the whole cast really, but Sofia Wylie and Kerry Washington in particular. I love them. The way they portrayed Agatha and Dovey was straight out of the book imo, but they made it their own at the same time. Obsessed.
can't think of anything else atm bc I went out and am tired as heck but would rate 7/10! enjoyed it well minus the qualms I mentioned that's it for now? will make a pt 2 when I've really processed everything tomorrow

The Good, the Evil, and the Volcano
I've been watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996), as per a recommendation from @rosellemoon, (Thank you, by the way—I've really been enjoying it!) and had a thought based on the season three finale, "The Good, the Bad, and the Luau."
The premise of the episode was that Sabrina had an evil twin, Katrina, and both twins were put on trial, to determine who was the good one as a matter of life-and-death.
There were three "trials"/testimonies in the episode, if I recall correctly, and the twins had to bring forth evidence of their goodness.
To loosely interpret what happened: whomever was found to be the evil one was to be sent away, a fairly benign punishment. Yet, it actually turned out that the evil twin would be pitched into an active volcano as a human sacrifice, to cleanse the pair of its shadow. (Hold that thought for a bit. I will circle back to it later!)
Ok, now to transpose this into the Endless Woods:
Unbeknownst to the brothers, the stakes of the trial are much higher than they first believe, worse than they were initially led to perceive by the impartial Gnomeland judge who lied to them, so as to preserve the integrity of the examination.
One fateful day, Rhian and Rafal are brought to trial, to determine the true content of their souls and thus, their fates, accordingly, probably in a version of the Endless Woods that wants to purge itself of all Evil, being more dystopian than it already is.
In the episode, Katrina passes one of the tests with flying colors, and things originally look bleak for Sabrina. As far as Rhian and Rafal go, the plot could look like this:
Rhian is performatively Good, and he's far better at looking Good on paper than Rafal is, for all intents and purposes. Yet, the question is: how much of his Goodness is sincere? Appearances can be deceiving and not everything is as it seems. Just, keep those classic adages in mind.
And, even if Rafal is renowned for his Evil all throughout the Woods, he tries his hardest to win the trials, and so too does Rhian.
They have ample reason to try after all—neither of them wants to be cast out of the Woods, consigned to a magicless existence. And, more importantly, neither of them wants to be the loser on principle, because that would mark them as the inferior twin for the rest of their days.
Anyway, by contrast, Rafal's reputation does not serve him well, and whenever he does Good, it's for selfish reasons. His motives are often more visibly selfish than Rhian’s reasons. Albeit, Rhian's reasons for doing Good are also just as self-serving, just more subtle; they revolve around vanity more than Rafal's power-hungry drive for tangible gains does, at the very least.
Thus, during the first of the trials, Rhian had a lifetime of clearly Good Deeds to show for himself, and Rafal had... nothing. And, Rhian exhibited compassion during a spontaneous act of kindness.
During the second trial, Rafal won by acting quickly under a high-pressure situation, leaving Rhian as the loser.
Now, during the third trial, Rafal had a better answer than Rhian's in response to the prompting from the judge: to recall something Good they did for another during the last 24 hours. (Luckily for Rafal, hours ago, he had done something that qualified indirectly as a Good Deed: he had been thinking over a riddle the Kingdom Council had given him to solve, and the Stymph screeches outside had finally gotten to him. He decided to confront the birds, and Humburg, who looked to be the source of their agitation from Rafal's view, as Rafal didn't have all the information available. The Stymphs had been starving, made irritable by their prolonged suffering, and Humburg was suffering from back pain, groaning on the ground, being pecked. So, Rafal cast a spell to silence the Stymphs, providing them with food, but he only did it to "mute" them, in a sense, in order to shut them up, so he could properly concentrate, and get back to his riddle promptly. He also decided to "help" Humburg by petrifying him temporarily, but even if that was a crude, scornful "solution," it did technically alleviate Humburg's back pain!)
Later, however, it turned out that when Rafal's answer about the aforementioned Good Deed was reviewed in more depth, it was found to have been driven by impure intentions, disqualifying Rafal's evidence, meaning Rhian, was, by default, the victor of the third trial, and had won 2/3 of them, fair and square.
So, it came to be that the moment of the sacrifice had arrived.
Both twins were told the truth of the matter, that the actual punishment for being Evil was to be thrown into deathly, red-hot lava. And, it was the Good twin's noble duty to bid his Evil twin farewell and perform the send-off.
The judge commanded Rhian to push Rafal into the volcano, and he does! Miraculously, without question, Rhian obeyed the authority at hand.
Rhian said, "Okie dokie!" with unusual cheer, and shoved Rafal over the edge to his demise, secretly relieved that he had the chance to continue living. (Rhian was willing to sacrifice his brother because he's cowardly and didn't want to die himself.)
Rafal and the Ever witnesses present stared in slack-jawed, wide-eyed horror at how Rhian had publicly exposed his sudden, seemingly newfound capacity for Evil.
Then, Rafal toppled, almost plunging straight into the hot, molten lava below, but he managed to latch onto the cliffside by Rhian's feet, and when he regained his bearings, whilst still dangling precariously over the fuming, burning crater, he vengefully seized Rhian's ankle and pulled. And, he didn't pull himself up. Instead, he intended to drag Rhian down, shouting that he would take Rhian down with him, even if it was the last thing he did!
The judge observed these ongoings, and heaved both twins back over the edge, back onto solid ground, saving them. He then announced that no Good twin has ever had the heart to do away with his Evil twin, in the history of all other twin trials preceding this... exceptional outcome, but while this would, under ordinary circumstances, mean that he should pronounce the victim the Good twin and the one who followed through with his unethical order as Evil, this time, it was... rather hard to tell them apart, especially when accounting for Rafal's outburst, his equally murderous reaction toward Rhian's act, being petty retaliation and all.
Neither had passed the Volcano Test, a harrowing final test in disguise, which had devolved to become more hazardous than it was originally designed to be.
So, the judge concluded that both twins were Evil.
Consequently, he issued a court order for them to be closely monitored for signs of "reformation" as they returned to their daily lives, once again, having outlived a pretty surreal experience for the ages. In fact, in hindsight, the case was interpreted by a law clerk to mean that, incidentally, they had proven themselves more a danger to each other than a threat to the Woods at large.
The END.

AGATHA FREES THE WISH FISH BECAUSE *SHE* WISHES FOR EVERYONE TO GO HOME?? NOT BECAUSE SHE CAN GRANT WISHES?? I’m going to lose my mind. MAYBE it’s better thematically at showing she’s truly good, but ugh... still, not my favorite. And with her not being a grouchy ass to everyone it just weakens the display of how good she is.
And it’s fucking “Gregor” being a stymph instead of having the gargoyles and having the stone hand melt into a human hand AND having Tedros be furious at Merlin’s Menagerie burning down?? God I’m going to explode. Literally everything has been stripped down to its bare bones to make room for the fact that it’s a movie and not a TV show at this point, I feel. Ugh.

Can you do a quick spoiler free review? I can’t watch the movie till Friday lol
i'll compile a bunch of my spoiler-free parts of the review because i am currently in ap lit but i don't want to leave you hanging
i think fans are going to be both excited and disappointed by the movie because on one hand, favorite characters! some favorite scenes! on the other hand, it's just not an awesome movie lmfao
plot decisions made to retrofit the story for a script ended up weakening the overall quality of the movie, and i think the characterization of some characters in the script was inaccurate in a very distracting way that also ended up weakening the performance of whatever actor was playing the role
the general audience is going to feel VERY queerbaited (basically a return to fandom circa 2013-2015) and i've already seen some of that sentiment, specifically in a review from the guardian
i LOVED seeing the practical effects especially during some prominent action scenes, but i think the amount of cgi they ended up using anyway was disappointing considering it's what most reviews have been mentioning even though paul said he was trying his damndest to avoid it
despite all this i do think the main young cast (sophie, agatha, tedros, beatrix, hort) did the best with what they were given and i liked seeing them a LOT
i also still think the physical set design and costumes were GORGEOUS. some scenes are really very beautiful, and the cgi isn't always bad (the stymphs are mostly passable, and i think the wish fish scene turned out really beautiful)
overall, very mixed feelings

Thoughts while watching the new School for Good and Evil movie
Btw spoiler for the Book:
Gavaldon looks good
Baby Sophie and Baby Agatha
Reaper my beloved
Seeing Agatha and Tedros absolutely hate on each other is the funniest thing ever if you know that soon later, they’re literally opsessed with each other
I absolutely love movie lady lesso
The school master is quite funny
Agatha is so fucking beautiful even in her gavaldon outfit.
On that note, the dresses and outfits in general aren’t how I imagined them but they’re still absolutely amazing. Outfit Departement poppef off
Hort is amazing. His looks. How he acts. Amazing.
Hester too. Both their castings are 10/10
Gregor my beloved, he just wants his own grocery store plz
“Well I failed beauty class”
“What part did you fail”
“Smiling”
Sophie randomly kissing someone💀
Tedros accent
Kinda would like Agatha and Tedros to have more banter but them talking is kinda cute. They skipped a stage and went immediately to how they interacted after the Trial by Tale
The blue forest isn’t blue :\
I hate movie beatrix. I also hate book Beatrix, so no issue
Awww Gregor is a Stymph :(
“Why don’t you go summon a clif and just off it”
HESTERS DEMON IS SO GOOD
Liked the wasps being included but not rlly that it was actually Rafal
“You’re not allowed to kill anyone until after graduation”
Plz don’t tell me Lady Lesso has a thing for Rafal. At this point Rafal is like the Forests whore. Plus she actually fought Rafal and wasn’t rlly fighting for him
Lady Lesso believing Sophie is gonna be powerful like she does in the books
The wish fish scene cgi is soo well omg
The lil girl😭
NOOOOOO GREGOR FUCKING DIES MY BOY JUST WANTED HIS GROCERY STORE
Hah get smacked Tedros
Great they now actually hate each other as they should have
LADY LESSO LOOKS SO FUCKING HOT IN JUST HER SUIT WITHOUT HER JACKET THING SHE IS WHAT I MEANT WITH “I LOVE WOMAN IN SUITS”
Tedros my dude why are you constantly trying to talk to Agatha, are you perhaps… IN LOVE
LESSO PUTS THE KEY THROUGH THEIR FREAKING FINGERS I-
Really liked the “everyone has their unike colour of fingerglow” better
SOPHIE IS OWNING OMG AND “You should see me in a crown” IS THE ONLY FITTING SONG FOR THIS WHOLE SCENE
“Nothing distracts me” MY ASS
I want to have a wingman as good as Agatha
Ohhoho Hester vs Beatrix
“Sophie we can do this, we’re good enough, we’re strong enough to protect each other” boy you’re gonna get your heart broken
Liked the version with the annual trial by tale better
Pumpkins aren’t fun didn’t you learn anything from the roses sophie
Yes Agatha help your future husband
Kinda sad how everything feels rushed but it’s understandable since you can’t pack a 600 page, slowl development book in a 2,5 hr movie and not cut or rush everything
Rafal looks like a very gay Dracula and I’ve been saying that ever since his pics got released
Don’t know what I’m thinking about the whole blood magic thing
“Do I look like I give a Shit about smiling” ANEMONE GOT A PERSONALITY YAYYYYYY
Yo they made Lady Lesso a reader why
Sophia Ann Caruso made an absolute amazing job at portraying Sophie especially witch Sophie
“She’s like my sister” bestie I don’t know how to tell you this
Agathas ever ball dress could’ve been a bit more spectacular. Like her entrance in the Circus of talents was breathtaking and the gown she wear at the ball in the movie isn’t really doing it any justice? She’s still very pretty tho
“You are my true love” “oh my god you’ve got the worst timing” heheheh
“I’m here with Agatha” No he’s not” plz she just wants to go back to her graveyard
Why does the never ball looks so much more fun
Yooo the arrows turning into daisy’s was also in the book wasn’t it
HESTER IS SO HOT IN HER RED DRESS
NEVER TEDROS HOLY SHIT
Tedros rlly keeps getting slapped
Nooo Rhian :(
The story line that Rafal influenced good is kinda odd, I liked the book line better cause it kinda makes more sense idk? Like, the storian is an entity that’s I guess thousands of years old and it made the brothers immortal in the first place and gave them their powers so how is Rafal able to influence it if it’s power is so big. It made more sense that he thought he’d be able to rule over it but can’t and good wins because of true love
They Put aspekts of the third book in there (Never after)
Gay Dracula is dead yay
Lady Lesso and Professor Dovey could be an amazing couple
“Hi there” “My heart belongs to another” heh screw you Beatrix, in germany we call this ‘gekorbt’
Tedros face is like “ yes plz stay I love you”
Their kiss is nice but I’m a sucker for a slow burn and making them kiss in the second book and make it so special was nice
THE ARROW AT THE END EUDJRHICNRJCJRJSIFNRJXKHFIDNFJZKBDUEICNTHSIZBFIFIRNHSYIFNR THE PEOPLE WHO READ THE BOOKS SHOULD FREAK OUT RN
So my final opinion:
Pretty good movie, not too book accurate, casting was overall fitting. I did miss some stuff like the Circus of Talents or the Trial by Tale being an anual thing between students but I understand that it’s not easy to back everything included in a book into a movie. I wish they would’ve included the whole Sader part but again, probably time issues. The movie did feel kinda rushed but again book into movie is hard. But overall I really liked the movie especially because so many things were close to how I imagined them while reading
But obviously the books are always better

Was school for good and evil good? Did you read the books and/or just watch the movie?
lemme see... I actually did enjoy it. I've read the books, up to the first book of the sequel series. And some of what they did, I liked, and some I bristled at. I'll put it in the cut, but what I will say here is that I think there was just too much they had to do for a movie - I think it would've served better as a limited series or tv show.
Number 1: Sophie
Sophie... they defanged her. Part of the fun of the story is that she's Evil all along, and there is no true effort to hide it - she's callous, spiteful, and cruel, and she constantly throws Agatha under the bus for her own benefit, while Agatha is truly good, thinking about others and doubting herself. Sophie in the movie is shown being a better friend to Agatha (which I like), but she is a terrible person, and I wish we got more of that. We lost a little bit of her characterization with the Lunchtime with Sophie and with her becoming a Nemesis to Agatha. I think Sophia Caruso did a good job, I just wish there was MORE to her character.
Number 2: Agatha
I really like that they cast Sofia Wylie. (Although, I have an issue here - they do absolutely nothing to "pretty her down" to make her parallel transformation to Sophie make sense, other than make her curly hair a little more managed, which is a little problematic. I wish they had put circles under her eyes, or made her seem at all unkempt other than having big hair. I did like the change to Agatha, the way she was more about nobody being Pure Good or Pure Evil, but human. I just wish we got more time with that. I feel like this Agatha wasn't a whole lot like the book, but I liked how much they played up her empathy.
Number 3: Changes, for Good
I really liked the Gregor character they added. If the little girl Wish Fish Mogrif didn't hammer the point home, the stymph being Gregor was horrifyingly effective at portraying the dark side to the School. I liked that the School Master was a little more involved. I even liked Charlize Theron's Lady Lesso. I really enjoyed the "do I look like I give a SHIT about smiling?!" moment.
Number 4: Changes, for Evil
I didn't enjoy the way Rafal and blood magic were played up. The way it is in the movie, it kinda removes all Sophie's agency, like she was manipulated into Evil, when she should have been Evil all along. I didn't like that Sophie didn't kill the Beast in the Doom Room. I didn't like that Agatha didn't get a transformative moment like Sophie, where she got a fake makeover to realize she didn't need it at all. I didn't think much of Tedros and the Tedros/Agatha relationship here. It just didn't feel very interesting or fun. Tedros didn't really have much to learn, either. I think Kerry Washington didn't do so great as Dovey. I was expecting more of a stable, grandmotherly type than a manic, flip-floppy person. Lady Lesso's story was told way too early, and for no reason. Part of the themes of the series are the ways relationships between people overcome the overarching forced binaries of Good/Evil, Boy/Girl, and Old/New. Dovey and Lesso are supposed to be models for Sophie and Agatha, trusting each other more than Good and Evil. Here, Lesso is just on the School Master's side the whole time instead of freaking out that Sophie is unleashing war in the school.
Number 5: School
There was so little actually in the school! No lessons, no Agatha excelling at Good AND Evil magic, no Sophie being naturally good but bad at work, and no real learning or the Trial By Tale. It also refused to give me the awesome scenes of Agatha using her smarts to get by - she never gets to cross the boundary between schools by outsmarting the binary, which would have fit even better with her new characterization. And we got too little time with the side characters to care about them in the final fight.
So really, I think we needed a series to meet all the side characters and get attached, learn the most about the school, and have more time for Agatha and Sophie's character journeys.
