Blacksong's Check-up (short story)
“You’re wrecking my patients’ nest,” Gorsedaisy’s dry-crackled voice cut into Blacksong’s thoughts. The dusty-brown she-cat looked at her dark paws, noticing for the first time that she had shredded the moss and leaves that lined her nest to crumbling bits.
“Sorry,” she mumbled awkwardly. “Do you think…” She wondered if she should speak. She felt so isolated. Ever since she told her siblings she was pregnant, Swanmist refused to so much as speak to her. Lightstream and Brokenwhistle were more forgiving, but stuck to Swanmist more than they stuck to her. If they didn’t share his thoughts to the same extent, they stayed by his side to soothe him in his anger.
Meanwhile, Grebeglade refused to pick a side, and Marblegaze was fearful. She wasn’t angry, but she wasn’t happy, either. The only one in her family Blacksong felt wasn’t mad or disappointed in her was her littermate, Greydusk.
Blacksong wasn’t even sure where the father was. She was sure Buck wouldn’t leave her. She knew something must have happened to him, and she hated not knowing what or if he was safe. Part of her hated that she couldn’t tell him that he was to be a father before he was taken away, while the other part was grateful that he wouldn’t have to suffer the knowledge of being parted from his kits.
…She was going to introduce kits into the world, the world that right now felt so split apart. Her pregnancy certainly didn’t help with her emotions. One moment, she wanted to scream at Swanmist for being so petty, the next she fully believed he was right and that she was the worst sister in the world for breaking her promise of ending the bloodline.
She never even met Redjay! He had died before she was born!
But Gorsedaisy knew him. And she was a medicine cat. Perhaps hers was the best advice Blacksong could receive. “...Do you think I’m doing the right thing?”
Gorsedaisy lowered her paw from where she had been running it along Blacksong’s belly. She didn’t speak for a few heartbeats. “New warriors are always a good addition to the Clan,” she responded, but the words sounded forced.
“But other she-cats are having kits, too. And I promised my family, I agreed that we would never have kits on my life….But I never even met my father. Is it fair for them to be so angry? I said that I wouldn’t, but I was still young, and I don’t want to live in their grief,” Blacksong spoke semi-rapidly.
Gorsedaisy returned to checking her over. “There’s nothing that can be done now,” she replied simply.
Blacksong wished she could be more assuring, maybe actually talk. “Right. And, er, surely blood doesn’t make someone evil, right? I mean, I’m not evil, none of my brothers are and my sister’s not. But they act like I’m doing something wrong…I just want to be a mother.”
Gorsedaisy didn’t look at her. Her gaze was focused on Blacksong’s fur, but the queen noticed the stilled movements and the shadow that seemed to have entered the medicine den. “Your concern is good. You care for your kits already. As long as you attend to them, and keep them on the right path, and…and…You, uh, you should be alright.”
Blacksong narrowed her eyes inquizzically. Gorsedaisy didn’t seem to believe her own words. You’re being paranoid, Blacksong told herself. Her pregnancy was just fogging up her brain. “I do care for them. So, so much. I just wish that my brothers did, too.” Blacksong’s throat tightened. She shut her eyes tightlty, willing the strong emotions away.
“Have you thought up names?” Gorsedaisy asked.
Blacksong was thankful for the change in subject, now that she had gotten a good answer. She couldn’t help but wonder if that’s why Gorsedaisy had asked it, and was grateful for the distraction. “I think so. Ha, unless you have any suggestions?”
“Maybe Spotkit would suit them.”
“Why?” Was Gorsedaisy trying to guess the father? Worry dug into Blacksong’s stomach. Did she suspect the father was a loner?
“I just imagine one would be spotted. Or Red.”
Redjay…
Suddenly Blacksong didn’t want to be here anymore. “So am I good?”
Gorsedaisy looked at her, and only then seemed to realize that she had been checking her over. “Yes. Everything’s fine. Just get good rest and eat lots.”
“Okay, I will.” Blacksong stood up and left the den, but she couldn’t stop herself from glancing over her shoulder at the elderly medicine cat sitting completely still, staring at nothing at all.

@ambitiousauthor
--Gorsedaisy changed the subject because she was uncomfortable, not for Blacksong.
--Blacksong having the same shape as Bella-May didn't make it into the dialogue, but I really like the idea! For some reason I thought that Gorsedaisy was guessing how the kits would look, hench the spotted and red comments.

All Together Now
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Computer died and I forgot my charger at work, so posting this from my back-up blog on mobile. First post here, I think?
—Grebe once called Broken her little brother. They’re littermates, and he is the youngest. I imagine Broken was always very sensitive, and his sister was his protector.
—Though he cared nothing for Marblegaze, Redjay did love his kits deeply and was very involved in their lives (Black and Grey not included, he died before they were born).
—Lightstream put up a strong, confident front in front of his Clanmates, but alone with Redjay, he would confide and talk about things that worried him, his anxieties and insecurities. After Redjay was revealed and died, he kept to himself completely.
He is also gay, but never had the Realization until after he died and reunited with a tom friend.
—Swanmist was the first to suggest ending their bloodline, distraught at the pain it was still causing the family. Marblegaze had often failed to fight back in battles, not wanting to shed blood anymore, and got deeply hurt because of it.

Something about Myrtle’s uncle Swanmist and son Stonefern having a similar face, having the same first letter of their name, and one feeling like their friend (Magpie) was the only one who cared about them while the other didn’t show any affection towards their nephew (who as a bonus has a bird suffix)— one possibly desperate for love and the other angry that someone had been born from it is….interesting

Muder boy, his manipulated wife, and their children
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact!
They are presented, left to right, in the order that they were born.
Another fun fact, they are also each seated beside their favourite sibling. Though they all got along very well (at least until Black's pregnancy), Light and Swan were best friends, Grebe and Broken were best friends, and Grey and Black were best friends (though the two latter came from a younger litter).
It was also mentioned on another post that Broken was a very shy kit and Grebekit acted like his protector.
I think I mostly wanted to see Red and Marble together

"We Swore!"
Tumblr media
While Redjay loved all of his kits equally, Swankit had definitely been especially close to him. Because of that, he was the most emotionally affected by Redjay's betrayal.
He was the one to decide they end their bloodline, and his siblings agreed. When Blacksong got pregnant anyway, he was very emotional and furious with her (seen here), and didn't talk to her for a long time.
Though he's a sore subject for everyone, the family knows that with Swanmist in particular, not to mention Redjay or anything that could remotely relate to him.
That's part of why Redjay avoided his nephew. Not just because Blacksong got pregnant despite their oath, but because Myrtle looks so much like Redjay.
It took many moons, years even, for him to fully accept what had happened. He felt incredibly guilty when Myrtlewing was revealed as a murderer, and he would wonder until the day he died if things would have been different if he had just got over himself and showed his nephew some love.
(He didn't openly sneer at Myrtle, but he would avoid him any chance he got and didn't visit him in the nursery. It wasn't because he hated his nephew. His anger was directed at Blacksong and later Grebeglade, and deeper, that anger was truly directed at his father. If Myrtle didn't already have loving adults in his life, then he would have stepped in).

Known Victims: Grebeglade, Lightstream, Swanmist, Tadpolekit, Songkit, Birdflank, Blacksong, Greydusk
Victim Profile: nieces
Cause of Death: killed by Myrtlewing
Cautionary Tale: ??
Story:
Brokenwhistle pushed his way into the nursery, frowning when he saw his sister. Grebeglade- once so large and happy- had withered to almost half her size. Her fur was dull, and there were bags under her eyes.
She looked up and smiled. “Hey kiddo. Did you come to see the kits?”
Brokenwhistle reluctantly nodded, shuffling his paws anxiously.
Grebeglade moved, and the sight made Brokenwhistle recoil. These were not kits. That much was clear. They were shaped somewhat like kits, but their fur was patchy and thinning, and their still-closed eyes bulged out.
“Those aren’t kits.” He whispered.
“What do you mean?” Grebeglade asked, but her brother was already gone.
His head felt like it was full of wasps. He knew that those kits weren’t right, why couldn’t the others see it? What were they?
He slept poorly that night, dreaming of golden eyes and a smiling tom.
“Those kits bring death.” The darkness hissed. “They’ll kill you and your kin.”
The next morning, he went straight to the medicine den.
“Myrtlewing, I have a question.”
His nephew looked up, confused and surprised.
“Brokenwhistle, right? What do you need?”
Brokenwhistle’s ears flattened. “First I need to know that you won’t tell a soul I asked this. Swear it on Starclan.”
Myrtlewing took a step back, ears flat. “What’s this about?” He asked. Brokenwhistle saw his fear, smelled his fear, like a sulphur haze.
He would tell, he would tell, he couldn’t be trusted.
No one could be trusted.
Brokenwhistle went to his favorite place to get away from all the noise, all the horrible noise.
He wandered and wandered further and further away from camp until he came to with a small Windclan patrol staring at him. The scent of blood was thick in the air, but he couldn’t remember what the blood was from. All he heard was the smiling tom, whispering in his ears.
The Windclan warriors escorted him back to camp, speaking kindly- almost like they were trying to calm a confused elder.
After that incident, he was put under watch. Not formally, but everyone watched him. He could feel their eyes on him. And the things in the nursery were getting bigger, while Grebeglade was getting smaller.
The breaking point was when cats started dying. Fleetsong, Bluefeather, Fallendust.. after each death, The monsters grew bigger, as thought they had eaten the very souls of the missing cats.
On the night of the gathering, he stole the creatures, carried them all the way up to the Two-leg farm. He dropped them in the small lake that horses drank out of, then fled the clans. He didn’t want to be around when his siblings learned what he did.
Additional Information:
--Submission by @ambitiousauthor
--The kits were normal, just premature.
--Myrtlewing not even knowing his name is so in-character.
--The fact that Myrtlewing was the one behind it the entire time, the nephew he didn’t suspect..

Victim Profile: cats he could manipulate, his brother
Cause of Death: blinded by pepper spray, hit by a monster (car)
Cautionary Tale: ??
Story:
His caretaker was almost always busy. With five kits running between her paws, and a young queen that needed help with her kits, how could she not be?
Hawksplash was a caring she-cat, and she loved her grandkits dearly, but she could only do so much. Giving all kits enough attention to keep them happy and alive was enough work on its own, but to keep them all happy, alive, and with a lot of personal attention? All while she was grieving for her son? It was simply impossible.
So Pipitkit found ways to entertain himself. More often than not, that ended up with something that got him into trouble. Leading a patrol of kits out of the camp, making a game of ‘who can hide in the warriors den the longest?,’ tricking the younger kits into eating ‘berries,’ which were rabbit droppings.
But there was an upside to all of them, and that was the more trouble he got in, the more attention he got. With a reputation as a troublemaker, Hawksplash had to keep an eye on him, more than the others.
However, he found out pretty soon that that wasn’t as great as he thought it would be. Initially, he created trouble for the attention, but he came to like it, and now that he had attention, it was harder pulling off those things he liked.
Stars, he was bored.
As an apprentice, he had some more freedom, but there were still rules, like how you couldn’t go out without a mentor, how you had to wake up early and go to sleep early.
He did it because he felt like it. It was easy enough to talk the other apprentices into sneaking out of the camp with him--and talking those that refused into keeping their mouths shut.
They crossed the border and raided the Riverclan camp. Well, they did. As soon as no one could see him, Pipitpaw returned happily back to camp, feigning shock when the young cats were returned by a very angry Riverclan patrol.
Luckily, no one was willing to rat Pipitpaw out. They couldn’t without getting themselves in trouble. The apprentices who stayed knew and said nothing, the ones who left listened to a denmate and attacked another Clan on their own. So many of them were already hurt. It would just be mean to get another one in trouble, wouldn’t it? And it would be wrong to risk Pipitpaw’s training now that Riverclan was angry with Windclan.
These were the points he made to them. Even when Flashpaw succumbed to infection following her injuries, he made sure they kept quiet, that is while he wasn’t being nuzzled by Hawksplash for being ‘such a good Clanmate’ for staying behind.
But there was another, very critical point.
Flashpaw was dead because of him.
That was the most fascinating thing of them all.
It also made him curious. Flashpaw was dead, yet he convinced her littermates and denmates not to detail to anyone why. They had to just live with the guilt of knowing, having that regret trapped inside with no way of relieving it.
So, so fascinating indeed.
He found out soon enough how lies could slip from his tongue like honey. Two moons before he was due to become a warrior, with more freedom now, he convinced Applepaw, Flashpaw’s brother, to practise a secret move with him to impress their mentors.
Their movements became smooth as they did. Then one day, without warning, Pipitpaw switched his movements. Applepaw was caught off-guard, not expecting or prepared for Pipitpaw’s paws around his neck.
Pipitpaw was oh so horrified when he found the body.
But it wasn’t the first time a cat has mysteriously died in the Clans. And why would anyone suspect Pipitpaw, who hadn’t caused trouble since he was a kit? Stars, he was one of the very few who stayed back when his denmates went and attacked another Clan!
He never thought of hurting his family before, but his littermates weren’t idiots. Ashfoot especially.
The tom couldn’t talk to another cat without Pipitfeather there by his side, and he wanted to turn on his brother over something he couldn’t prove?
Pipitfeather tried to talk him out of it, but Ashfoot wouldn’t listen.
He chased him through the moors. Ashfoot’s higher speed almost allowed him to get away, but his paw slipped into a hole, breaking his leg. He had cried and begged for help. Pipitfeather made sure to make it quick, and smashed his head onto a rock.
Pipitfeather, much as it saddened him to do so, buried him, then ran back to camp in a panic, saying how he couldn’t find Ashfoot, how he had told him that he wanted to become a kittypet, but he didn’t think he was serious.
When asked why, Pipitfeather let it ‘spill’ that Ashfoot had admitted to accidently killing Applepaw, and couldn’t let himself live as a warrior when Applepaw could never receive his name.
That was the only thing in his life he ever felt bad for.
He couldn’t hurt anyone else for several moons. When that time passed, he killed Whiskhill, sister to Applepaw and Flashpaw. Then he moved onto their mother.
After that, he told the apprentices that were talking about how the Clan should attack Thunderclan that they definitely should listen to their leader and definitely shouldn’t attack the Clan on their own, even if they were already so well trained, and there were a lot of them, and Thunderclan wouldn’t fight back too hard because they were all apprentices....
That attack proved more fatal than the last. Two apprentices died at the scene, another slipping from life as they dragged her back to the moors.
Pipitfeather found it amusing, but it wasn’t as entertaining as it used to be.
So he shook things up, trying new things. Killing Clanmates, cats from other Clans, loners, kittypets.
Kittypets were the easiest. They had no survival training, no knowledge of how it was like to fight for survival until it counted.
But he didn’t count on the fact that they knew things he didn’t. He didn’t see, for example, that strange Twoleg using a small, rounded object to spray something at an aggressive dog, making it back down.
Of course when this killer began to prey on them, they would fight back.
Pipitfeather unknowingly chased a tom to where a group was hiding, ready to pounce. They held him still as they aimed the object, held the flap down with a tooth, and released.
It wasn’t enough to kill him, but it certainly was enough to blind him. He wobbled away, disoriented, unsure where he was going, and in too much pain to pay attention to any of his senses, even if his vision could work.
He wasn’t aware of the Thunderpath, or of the monster barreling towards him.

--They ‘used’ a pepper spray, but couldn’t kill him with it and could only do so much with it as cats. Hence, the car.
--Also possible they stumbled with the pepper spray and he almost got away.
--He’s beefy in spite of being the runt, so his shy siblings look to him for comfort.
--I imagine Whisk, Apple, and Flash are the kits of the queen Hawksplash helped.

@ambitiousauthor would Lightstream, Swanmist, and Grebeglade still be warriors at the point of Rainstar’s Burden (or even alive), or would they be elders? Greydusk is younger than them, but he retired early (and is still rather old)

Shadowclan allegiances after Alder and Myrtle I guess
Tumblr media
very rough because I made it in a rush
Important Note:
--only features cats who are ALIVE and IN SHADOWCLAN. The deceased or gone or not on, as it’s mainly to show who’s left.
Also know that it doesn’t include Swanmist, Grebewing, or Lightstream as I’m not entirely sure if they were still in Shadowclan at this point or if they left.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So here’s some stuff about each of them (or at least those that I have background relationships on):
--Russet and Blaze had Birchcloud (deceased) as a doner. Bird and Lion’s brother is Flickerpine.
______________________________
--Grassbloom and Elderchirp are Fernpaw’s littermates.
--Their names go E F G, and are all named after plants.
--Their suffixes are both things that Fernpaw loved (cricket chirps and watching blooming flowers).
--Both Flicker’s littermates and Fern’s are around the same age, as they were both young apprentices when the revelation occurred.
--Grass and Lion would have kits, as would Bird and Elder.
______________________________
--Runningcloud (Alderstar’s apprentice) and Silverwhisker (sister of Dawnmoth, a victim) would later have a several litters of kits.
--Silverwhisker was Rainstar’s apprentice.
______________________________
You know Blacksong and Greydusk, Myrtle’s mother and uncle and who are also too old to have more kits even if it would help the Clan grow (not that they would want any).
______________________________
Molespots likely won’t have any kits to grow the Clan, as he’s much older than the other options. Maybe unless he finds a loner or kittypet around the same age that joins the Clan.
He was also Alderstar’s mentor.
______________________________
Hollyclaw is into girls, so she won’t be passing on any genes either
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
One of this cats would have been Rainstar’s deputy! (remember that they would have died before becoming leader and would be replaced by Snowstar -- who will likely be a kit of one of these couple’s litters).
None of them are not connected to Myrtle or Alder in some way.
It would either be Mossflake (mother of Myrtle’s victim),
Russetnose (mother of the cat who decided to follow in Alder and Myrtle’s pawsteps and also the bio father of her kits was killed by them),
Blazepad (see Russet),
Molespots (Alder’s mentor),
Hollyclaw (Alder’s half-sister),
Silverwhisker (sister of their victim),
Runningcloud (Alder’s apprentice)
it really goes to show how difficult it is to move on when you’re so connected
(btw the rest are either too old or were apprentices when Rain became leader and therefore could not have become deputy).

Background:
She was born after her father died, after everyone knew what he had done. When she was still young, her older siblings made a pact to never have kits, to never pass along the monster she never met's blood.
She understood, or maybe that is what she told herself because she never thought of a life that wasn't beneath the shadow of a killer, or because she was still so young when the pact was made, she had no idea just how much it would affect her, and how much she would find herself needing to get away from the constant need to prove her worth.
That is why she found Buck so interesting. She left food for the skinny, bony loner once every day until she was caught. Then they continued to meet up, face-to-face this time, and her feelings of sympathy for the starving cat gave way into genuine love. Maybe the love was truly all for him, maybe it was just for the tom that thought she was amazing, with no clue of who her father was or the restrictions thrust on her by her siblings.
She hadn't meant to get pregnant, and after a couple days of shock, she became happy. But when she went to tell Buck, he was gone.
She never believed he had left deliberately, instead thinking that something bad must have happened.
Her siblings, all but Grebewing and Greydusk, were furious with her, and when her little son was born, it was only the two that bothered meeting him at all. Greydusk, her littermate, was especially helpful, treating his nephew as though he were his son, playing with him, guiding him better than any father could.
She was proud when Myrtlepaw chose to follow in the path of a medicine cat, privately sticking her tongue out at her older siblings for giving up on him before he was even born. She comforted him when he grieved a close friend or lost patient, and she was happy to see him become close with Aldereyes, and then Grousemane and Hootpetal.
And when Fernpaw's mentor returned to camp, her mangled body in his jaws, and announced that it had been Myrtlewing that had killed her, presumably along with the rest of their missing Clanmates and who knows who else, something inside of her broke.
