NaNoWriMo 2017: May 3rd
I got distracted partway through the evening, but I absolutely cannot stay up late tonight, so this is what you get.
Word Count: 1188 Weekly Word Count: 6293 (of 10000) Previous: November (Masterpost); December (Masterpost); January (Masterpost); February (Masterpost); March (Masterpost); April (Masterpost); May: 1st. 2nd.
Canis woke in Malcador’s tent, stirring as the sounds of daylight woke her. The witch had been generous with her after the reading, feeding her and offering her a place to bathe. Canis tended to her companions, and the pair of them patrolled the area, keeping their noses to the ground on Leon’s behalf.
It still took Leon three days to stumble into camp, leading his horse, her sides heaving from strain and exhaustion.
“Sir, what are you doing here?” asked one of the residents of the small camp. “Are you searching for something, because I can assure you--”
“Olwynne,” Leon croaked, and despite the comforting nothingness of Malcador’s presence, she heard the anguish in his voice. “Someone said… I need to see her.”
“I’m here,” Canis said, approaching him. “Leon, what happened to you?”
“I can’t explain it to you,” Leon said, and reached for her with shaking hands. Canis took his hands in hers and drew him closer. She studied his face, and found it alarmingly thin and drawn. “There are two things you need to know. They’re very important.”
“Of course,” Canis said. “...but didn’t you go into that city to find answers to hunt the monster? What is this?”
“No, just listen.” Leon shook his head. “The first thing is that I need you to find me as soon as you can. I need you to bring this with you.” He reached into his coat and pulled out a book, pushing it into her hands. “Don’t open it. Don’t read it. Just keep it with you. That’s the first thing, understand?”
Canis frowned. “Find you, bring this book. Got it. What’s the second thing?”
“The second thing you need to know is that no matter what happens and no matter how this ends, I love you,” Leon whispered. “I’ve loved you for so long that I think my life would end without you. I’m not as strong as you are, so I hope that if the worst happens, you can survive without me.”
“Leon, what--”
Leon bent his head and kissed her hard, and she inhaled sharply. He smelled of horse and of snow, of swet and road dust. He stank of the city and those that lived there, and some strange, unidentifiable scent that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. She gripped at his arms with one hand, the other clutching at the book tightly.
Leon broke from the kiss a few moments later, and he let his forehead rest against hers. “Take care of my horse for me.”
“Where are you going, you damned fool?” Canis asked softly. “Why wouldn’t you be taking your horse. You love your horse. You rode her through an entire desert.”
“She can’t go where I’ll be headed,” Leon whispered. “Promise me.”
“This isn’t like you at all,” Canis said. “Leon, tell me--”
Leon pulled away from her. “I need to go. Remember your promises, remember the things you’ve said.”
Canis reached for him and he evaded, then turned and stumbled into a run. His horse walked a few steps forward and then stopped, exhausted.
“My my,” Malcador said, emerging from one of the other tents. “What seems to be the trouble here?”
“I don’t know, he’s acting so strangely,” Canis said. “His horse, he wants me to take care of his horse, while he runs off somewhere.”
“What a strange man,” Malcador murmured. “Very strange. Did he… give you a book?”
“He said I wasn’t to read it,” Canis said. “Just hold onto it. Does this make sense to you?”
Malcador looked a the title and gestured for her to hand it to him. When she did, he flipped it open immediately, to the front, and then to the back pages. “My my,” he murmured again. “How very interesting.”
“Do you know what he’s talking about?” Canis demanded. “I can’t imagine how writing would cause such an odd stir.”
“Can you read, Wolf-Sister?” Malcador asked, and Canis shook her head slightly. “Then the secret remains.”
“Secret..?” Canis’ eyes widened and she turned. “Leon!”
“Don’t forget your book,” Malcador said, and Canis snatched it from his hands. “Go with caution.”
“Thank you,” Canis said, and whistled sharply. “Fang! Claw! Hie!”
The scent of him still lingered in the air, the horse-smell, the road dust-smell, the city-stink, and Canis began to run, following her nose. It was not difficult to find Leon, it never was. Even through cities, through plains, through mountains, through deserts, through rain and wind and snow, she found him.
The camp had been created by a stream to provide water for washing and cooking, and the land nearest to the water’s edge was worn away from footfalls, making it easy to spot her lover by the stream. He was bent nearly double, breathing harshly.
“Come on, you monster,” Leon muttered angrily. “You Great Beast. Show yourself. I dare you.”
Great Beast? Canis wondered. So he did find answers in that city, but why won’t he tell me anything?
“Come on!” Leon cried. “Can’t you taste it? Can’t you smell it?!”
He must be insane, Canis thought, and took a step closer, then two. Her companions halted and growled, snarling at nothing. Clearly, the city poisoned him and now he’s lost his entire mind.
The scent at the riverbank shifted suddenly, and she covered her nose with both hands: it was rancid, like rotting garbage, like the worst pollution she had ever beheld. Canis fought the urge to vomit and fell to her knees, swallowing repeatedly and trying not to heave.
The creature burst forth from the water, huge and terrible, and her nausea became worse. Leon straightened, staring up at the monster.
“Give me your sssecretsss,” it hissed, and Leon laughed. “Why do you mock me, human?”
“There is nothing else for you to take,” Leon said. “If you want my secrets, you’ll have to take me to do it.”
“Do you think that I will not?” the creature demanded. “Do you think I am beyond sssuch thingsss?”
“I think you’re not used to people who know how to fight back,” Leon said. “So, take me if you dare, Beast. I know you. I know your name.”
The creature reared back and snached Leon up roughly. The strength of it drove Leon to his knees, and tentacles emerged from its sides, snatching Leon up and digging into his skin. Leon went limp as it gripped him, and retreated back through its hole, disappearing beneath the water.
Canis fought against her nausea and hurried towards the water’s edge. She could smell him, and for a moment, all she could do was breathe in and out raggedly as though she could snatch her lover back through scent alone.
When such was not forthcoming, she threw back her head and screamed. “Leon!”
~ * ~
The bowels of the earth are stinking and hot. The air smells like rotten eggs, tastes like smoke, feels like fire but filthier somehow. Glimpses of where he was came in fragments -- a jagged bit of rock here, a pool of shimmering heat there -- before he stopped and was discarded among the captured spoils.

[. . .] Still, it presented a pressing question that has been on many fans' minds for weeks: will Riz Ahmed play Hamilton in the London production of the show? Aside from the obvious reason why this should happen (read: because I neeeeeed it), the idea of this happening is less than far-fetched. The London production, set to open on the West End in November 2017, has yet to make a cast announcement for its leading man — but as the date draws closer and closer, fans haven't been able to help but notice that Lin and Riz have made just enough key guest appearances on each other's Twitter feeds to raise some eyebrows. While it is worth noting that they both have worked in the Star Wars franchise, with Riz starring in Rogue One and Lin penning and singing the Cantina Song from The Force Awakens, their friendship seems to run a little deeper than a galaxy far, far away. What do y'all think, my fellow Hamilton nerds (or, as we affectionately dubbed ourselves, "Ham trash")? Could Riz the next contender for Hamilton, or are we reading far too into this bromance — one that might have nothing to do with Hamilton at all? Let's examine my thesis for why this is happening, and why it should happen if it isn't. [. . .] *Riz Ahmed Has Mad Rap Skills* I mean, yes, duh, if you didn't already know, Riz is not-so-secretly a rap genius. For those of you who jumped on the Riz bandwagon after Star Wars (me, cough, me), you may not have known that Riz MC has been rapping in the public eye since 2006 — his albums Microscope, which he released as a solo artist in 2011, and Cashmere, which he released in 2014 as half of the hip-hop duo Swet Shep boys, both achieved critical acclaim. Basically, Riz could slide into the role faster than he and Lin are sliding into each other's DMs with all those fun inside jokes that WE'RE NOT A PART OF (sorry, I digress). *I Mean, He Was On The Hamilton Mixtape* And because he was trying to kill us all with the awesome, he dropped a Star Wars nod in it, too. Catch him in the remix of "Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)," where he simultaneously raps about his past as an immigrant and basically rips a hole in the fandom universe that demands to be filled with him playing Alexander Hamilton in the London production, lest it fold into itself like a dying star. (It's science, guys. I don't make the rules.) *I Want It Very Badly, And I Am Not The Only One * [. . .]
Will Riz Ahmed Play Hamilton In London? A Lot Of Evidence Seems To Be Pointing That Way (Bustle)

So I’m a liar. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last. Between some job-related scrambling and a three-day-long headache that ended with a CAT scan and a few many fistfuls of Advil/Tylenol/HeavierStuff, I didn’t manage to get this thing online before the new year swung around.
The good news is, three days in, this year is basically the same as the last, so you can still listen to this. It’s cool. I promise.
I know 2016 was supposedly an annus horribilis -- and we did lose many more musical icons (not to be confused with Mandy Moore, Musical Icon) in a single revolution than we ever should* -- but honestly, if 2016 had ended on November 7th, I think we’d all be talking about the year just past in much different terms. And while I’m pretty dubious that 2017 will be anything but a disaster for our most vulnerable and an introduction to vulnerability for a whole bunch more of us (who hadn’t considered we’d be there, perhaps ever, in our lifetimes), the truth is 2016 itself was actually a pretty good year -- personally, and I think collectively. So while next year’s mixtape might just be a track-list etched by a thousand bent fingernails on the walls of the work camp, this year’s mix pretty fairly reflects what was, by and large, a positive experience when lived from day to day.  I’m gonna miss it like candy.
The seventh** edition of my year-end mixtape arrives in much the same way last year’s did: with maybe six songs that were locks to make this list from the jump, and then a lot of rooting through the 300-odd tracks on my Top Tracks of 2016 playlist***. I’ve, as always, avoided any big pop hits -- otherwise this years list might just be O.T. Genasis feat. Young Dolph on loop -- but I’ve backed away from the tradition of keeping tracks from my Top Ten albums off of the list. Truth is, even when I wasn’t listening to those albums, it was certain tracks from those albums I kept coming back to, and this year’s mix would feel incomplete without them. They’re the anchor pieces.
If last year’s mix trended darker, this year’s feels a little brighter, a little more hopeful. It's not all wide-eyed; if anything, this year’s selections are a little more introspective than the last. But even its denser moments generally offer something to dream on.
It’s also the first mix I’ve made where every track is available on Spotify****. That’s probably largely reflective of my listening habits -- Spotify’s ease of use, and of playlist compilation, led me to spending less time on SoundCloud and the like, because even once you find something good, it’s frankly a pain to grab music from elsewhere and then sync it to Spotify, especially when I often go weeks without touching my MacBook. I do 90% of my personal computing on my mobile now. The medium is the message, or something. (The message, however, is rarely on Medium.)
Enough of the rambles; on with the show.

I’ll be back tomorrow with some more thoughts on the Year In Music and my personal listening habits, and then we’ll get into the business of counting down. I’m not sure I’ll go in quite as deep as I typically do this time around (that aforementioned work stuff, again), but I’m not ruling it out either.
*one of whom will be showing up on my Top Ten in the coming weeks
**You can always find the complete collection of mixes which have appeared on Makeup For The Silence, as well as all the playlists I’ve contributed to elsewhere, right over here.
***I’ve archived my 2016 list and rolled my 2017 one right on top, so if you were subscribed, you should be following 2017 now. If not, follow along right here.
****...for now. Of course, tracks on Spotify come and go on the wind and the whim, so I still strongly recommending downloading. That said, you can stream it here.

Puto, a classic steamed sweet cake that is traditionally made from ground rice, is one of the most well-known delicacies in the Philippines. It is traditionally white in color but can often be seen tinted purple or green in appearance in order to indicate the flavors of ube or pandan. This delicacy is often served with a strip of cheese or a slice of salted egg on top. Puto can also be eaten along with savory viands, especially the Filipino dish called Dinuguan. According to Serna Estrella (2013), the word puto is derived from the Malay word puttu, which literally means “portioned.” The regional variants of the steamed cake take their names from either their appearance or their most notable feature. Puto bumbong, for example, is named after the chimney-like contraption used to cook it, puto seco translates to “dry puto” in Spanish, and bite-sized cakes stuffed with a sweet meat filling are called puto pao as a tribute to the Chinese meat bun that inspired their creation.
There are numerous regional variations of puto like the Putong Polo which is currently the most popular native dish that originated in Valenzuela City, Philippines. Mang Delfin’s Putong Polo, owned by Delfin Gutierrez Jr., is now one of the most successful businesses in selling puto and other Filipino delicacies. The famous Putong Polo was awarded by the Presidential Awardee for the most delicious delicacy in the year 1920, during a competition that was held in the town of Polo. In 1944, Delfin Gutierrez Jr. got his business roots from his grandparents, Olimpio Gutierrez and Felisisima De Guzman. In 1968 to 1982, the business was passed on with the help of his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Gutierrez and Jesus Gerona. The business has produced several branches around Luzon throughout the years. The owner of the business was able to buy his family a house in Malanday, Valenzuela City because of its huge success.
In order to prepare the Putong Polo, it is essential to have a corn mill to grill the rice, a swet to form the puto and lansungan made from kawayan to steam the puto. Mang Delfin has also provided the list of ingredients needed to make the famous Putong Polo. These ingredients are premium or laon rice (dinorado), sugar (white or brown), baking powder/salt and cheese, and a secret ingredient which is assumed to be in secret for it is their clan’s secret recipe thus, closure is indeed needed. According to Mang Delfin, the first step in making the Putong Polo is to soak the rice for 24 hours. After soaking it, grind the rice using a corn mill while it still wet from the soaking. Then, mix all the given ingredients according to the desired or given measurements. Place the mixed ingredients it on a swet or hulmahan to form it into puto. Place it into the steamer and let it cool. And finally, place it a box. After doing this process, the magical taste of Putong Polo is ready to serve.
Because of the great passion of Mang Delfin Jr.’s family in cooking their specialty, the famous Putong Polo was personally chosen by one of the senators, Win Gatchalian, to be distributed to government birthday celebrants, from Barangay Captains, Councilors, and other employees. Every 2nd of November, a festival was held in order to give acknowledgement for this special delicacy.

Putong Pulo. Food and culture are related with each other. Food is an important part of any celebration in all nations of the world, regardless of culture or region. It plays an important part in how we celebrate. The celebrations that we have and the ways that we celebrate them are affected by our culture, and there are different cultures around the world.
In the Philippines, festivals are celebration of life. It is part of one’s custom, culture and tradition. They are there for us to celebrate. We can divide festivals into three kinds; national, seasonal, and religious. The first kind, the national festivals are celebrated with great patriotic favor. The second represents the change of season that that public celebrates their enthusiasm, and the third marks the religious association of people (Ethnic Group Philippines, 2011). In Barangay Polo in Valenzuela, residents celebrate the feast day of San Diego de Alcala on the 12th of November every year. Together with the fiesta, the town also celebrates the "Putong Polo Festival", a food festival honoring the putong Polo, a local variety of the Philippine rice cake puto.
Tumblr media
Putong pulo is a popular Filipino delicacy, originated from Valenzuela, in the town of Polo. Its main ingredients are Premium or laon rice (dinorado), baking powder, sugar, cheese, and atchuete for coloring. For the procedure, first, soak the rice for 24 hours. After soaking it, grind the rice using a cornmill while it still wet from the soaking. Mix all the given ingredients according to the desired or given measurements. Place the mixed ingredients it on a swet or hulmahan to form it into puto. Lastly, place it into the steamer and let it cool (Aha! Valenzuela, 2013).
There was a competition that was held in the town of Polo, Bulacan, in 1920. A Presidential Awardee of the most delicious delicacy was awarded to the Nieva Family, made the Putong Pulo. After this, it became famous delicacy and many entrepreneurs made this food as their business.
The owner of the Mang Delfin’s Putong Polo, Delfin Guttierez Jr., joined a competition but unfortunately did not got the chance win. He made his loss as his motivation to keep going and try harder to make his business grow. Later on, it became a successful man. Senator Win Gatchalian had personally chosen this product to be specially delivered to the government birthday celebrants, from Barangay Captains, Councilors, and other employees.
According to Aha! Valenzuela, “Mang Delfin’s putong polo success was not just about the buyers, or the puto itself, but it came from perseverance, hard work and faith in one’s own work.”
Certain foods also have symbolic meaning behind them. Long, uncut noodles symbolize long life; Sweet rice and food made from it symbolize the bond between family members. From what I have learned on Mang Delfin’s life, it can also have deeper symbolism; it is being able to continue on trying to do something inspite of difficulties and challenges in life
