Every time I read this comic, I get something new out of it - for one, I just noticed that Hank and Sydren are clearly sharing eye contact in that first panel, and Sydren is gesturing like, dude idk, as if he's hoping to warn Hank or get his help dealing with Abigail running around like a blue arsed fly (or would that be green arsed fly?). The fact that Abigail appears to be steering her entire body by the power of her strong, heroic jaw is just something to behold, tbh. Also, I'd just like it to be noted that Hank's characterisation here is adorable and heartbreaking in equal measure, because this is what he wants to be like all the time. He wants to be sweet and soft and kind and affectionate, he doesn't believe in cruelty or misery, and even though Abigail claims not to have time for him at the moment, how does he react? He reacts with pouty and cute little whininess. He doesn't get his back up, he doesn't get snippy, he gets cute. You will never see him get like this around the X-Men, this is something he only tends to do around his romantic partners, because he's comfortable. He's almost constantly performing, over-exaggerating in some way - usually, it's his intelligence, but here, he's over-exaggerating his 'I'm just a poor Hank in need of love' routine. He's just cute, okay? Something to note is that he also tends to act this playful and 'pay attention to meeee' around Wonder Man, too . . .

The Relics - A Lecture by Dr. Khafra Phix
The Relics are not your friends.
Tumblr media
Oh, to be sure, they were created to aid humanity and to help them progress to a remnant of the glory that they once knew, but an important distinction has to be made. A distinction between the Entities that inhabit the Relics, and the Relics themselves.
The Entities, such as Jinn and Ambrosius, are the personalities inhabiting the various Relics. They’re in the driver’s seat, so to speak. They are the consciousness, the “soul” (though whether the Entities themselves actually have souls is a matter of debate) of the Relics. They handle the nuance of the requests they receive, they’re the creativity behind Creation, Knowledge, Choice, and Destruction.
Think of them as the A.I. operating a supercomputer.
The Relics would not be able to get anything done without their Entities, but the power itself does not come from the Entities, it comes from the Relics. But the Relics are not conscious. They are not sentient. They are essentially machines. Machines on a level beyond anything the human mind can comprehend, powered by divine providence, but machines nonetheless.
Why make this distinction? The Entities are bound to their Relics, a part of them, so why get so specific? There can’t exist a Relic without its Entity, right?
Wrong.
Oh so very wrong.
There is another facet to the Relics which rarely gets commented on. While any one person being able to encounter each Entity and make note of certain patterns is highly unlikely, keen observers will note that each Entity has chains and shackles on their persons. This is not coincidence or mere aesthetic choice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Entities are prisoners.
The Relics are their prisons.
The implication is obvious. Prisons do not come into existence with prisoners. When the Relics fell to Remnant with Ozma those many thousands of years ago, the Entities as we know them did not exist. The Relics were hostless.
So where did they come from?
The simple answer is that we, that is being Doctor Ksenija Sydren and myself, do not know. The only Entity that we have any knowledge of their past on is the Entity most eager to sate the curiosity of man, Jinn. Since the revelation of the secret war roaring in the background of history was revealed to the world during the Fall of Atlas, much research has been poured into this subject. Suddenly, confusing aspects of history and mythology made far more sense.
Jinn has the distinction of being an important mythological figure in her mortal life: Amateru, the founder of Mistral. Usual mythological sources also attribute to her the role of “goddess of the sun, but as we can see, that was a bit of an exaggeration, to say the least.
Still, the revelation that Amateru was a real person who existed and did quite a bit of what her legends claimed was a bit of a smack in the face for historical scholars. But we know all of this because the Entity of Knowledge told us about this and then claimed to be her, along with the tireless work done by Doctor Sydren utilizing her psychometric semblance on the Lamp.
Some have accused Jinn of lying, but all the evidence that we have about the Entity of Knowledge concludes that she is physically impossible of lying. We’ve gathered up records of every question that she’s answered as we possibly could, and then the answers to those questions, and near as we can tell... There’s not a single mistruth among them. Doctor Sydren’s research corroborates the tale as well.
So here’s what we can glean:
Tumblr media
After the founding of Mistral and towards the end of her life, Amateru happened across the Relic of Knowledge. The Relic, at that point in time, was hostless. Whether it previously had a host that somehow escaped the Relic or whether Amateru became the first host is unknown. Regardless, when the former slave queen touched the Relic... well, something happened. Obviously. The exact process and transformation is not privy to us as of yet, but it is at this point that Amateru vanishes from the historical record and Jinn enters it.
Assuming that the rest of the Relics act like the Relic of Knowledge, that has vast, troubling implications. That means that every Entity was once a mortal who came into contact while the Relic was hostless and became trapped inside, thrust into a role that they likely had no knowledge of. Stuck for an eternity.
As stated before, the Relics themselves are amoral divine machines, likely merely following a sort of programming directive. It does beg the question, though... Is there some sort of screening process for a compatible host? Or is it simply the first sentient being to come into contact with a Relic?
We don’t know.
We likely won’t know until Jinn becomes active again in the next century.
Efforts have been made to approach the other Entities and get their perspective, but the other Relics have been staunchly guarded by their protectors, and rightly so. Still, it makes the scholarly pursuit of knowledge... frustrating, at times.
I know that this is a lot to take in, but I will conclude this lecture by leaving you with this thought to ponder over the weekend:
If the Entities are prisoners, is it possible for them to escape?

@bauwolf continued from here
in that space of time between the boy thanking her in a confused sounding manner, taking the offered box, and then speaking again the jackal’s worry over having overstepped some sort of social bounds had flared up. she was so terrible when it came to interacting with people, honestly mostly of the time she didn’t have the faintest clue as to how she should interact with those around her. and it was only now striking her that, given that they were basically complete strangers, this sort of thing was likely very strange to the boy if not entirely off-putting. anxiety was brewing inside the faunus as she found anywhere other than the other to look, ears flattening slightly and considering her best choice of escaping the awkward situation she’d put them both in- until he asked her name and her ears perked up once more, tone of her cheeks darkening at the embarrassment of having completely overlooked such a basic thing as an introduction.
Tumblr media
” oh ! right ! sorry i- i guess it is weird having a stranger just give you a random box of food. at least i think it would be considered weird ? it seems like it is, at least in this situation. “
and she was not helping her own case in the slightest with her ramblings.
” uh, ksenija. ksenija sydren, student- well, former student of haven academy. as for the flavors, uh... it was strawberry shortcake, red velvet, chocolate, coffee cake, flan, and spiku. the last one is actually from my homeland of vacuo so it’ll be pretty different to all the others, there’s more spices added so it won’t just be sweet. i just thought it might be nice to have something so different from all the others that way you really get a chance to experience a more wide variety. “
hands moved to pull her long, violet locks over her shoulder and run her fingers through them, looking at the box rather than the boy holding them.
” i’m- well i’m sorry if i was out of bounds in going and getting this and basically forcing it on you, it wasn’t my intention to be rude in any way and if it somehow comes off that way then i deeply apologize for my ineptitude. i’m... not very good at dealing with social interactions or really people in general... though i guess by now you’ve probably figured that out. “
Tumblr media
fingers pulling through the thick mane of hair she had brought to rest over her shoulder it clicked in her mind that, though she’d given her own name, she’d completely neglected to ask his own. another social blunder to add to the list.
” um- can i ask what your name is ? if you feel like telling me of course, or if you’d rather not and just forget this whole.... weird.... thing that’s understandable too. “

Abigail Brand is the commanding officer of S.W.O.R.D., a S.H.I.E.L.D. offshoot that deals with defending the Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Almost no details about her personal life have been revealed, but she is known to be 28 years old as of the Skrulls' "Secret Invasion".[2]
Ord and The BreakworldEdit
When an alien by the name of Ord came to Earth, convinced that a mutant was destined to destroy his planet, Brand intervened in order to avoid an interplanetary war. Brand acquiesced to Ord's plan to avert the destruction of his world by allowing him to create a 'cure' for the mutant 'condition'. It was later revealed that the mutant prophesied to destroy Breakworld was Colossus. Furthermore, statements made by Ord suggest that neutralizing Earth's mutant population may have been just one step in an as-yet unrevealed plan.
After her involvement in this plan became known to the X-Men and to then-S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, Brand faced a board of inquiry to answer charges against her conduct. She defended her actions on the grounds that averting interplanetary warfare was a responsibility so great as to justify courses of action that would otherwise be considered immoral or illegal. This defense seems to have convinced the board as she was subsequently still in command of S.W.O.R.D.
Despite the antagonistic relationship she and Fury demonstrated toward each other, she was considered a Fury loyalist by Fury's then-successor as S.H.I.E.L.D. director, Maria Hill. Brand made no effort to hide her dislike for Hill, and no further contact between the two has been shown.
In a final attempt to draw Breakworld's forces away from the Earth, Brand had the X-Men (including Colossus), Ord, and Ord's ally Danger teleported aboard a S.W.O.R.D. starship and travel to the Breakworld itself. Ord, with the assistance of Danger, was able to contact his homeworld to alert them of Colossus' location, not knowing that this was all part of Brand's plan. Despite their past differences and Brand's continuing high-handed attitude, she attempted to work with the X-Men to find a solution to the crisis. However, Breakworld forces caught up with the S.W.O.R.D. vessel before Brand had predicted they would, forcing the X-Men and the S.W.O.R.D. strike team to use the ship's escape pods to finish their journey to the Breakworld. Once on the surface, Brand and Henry McCoy (Beast) teamed up and became separated from the other X-Men, at which point they were forced to take shelter in a small cave to avoid a device that was altering the weather to subfreezing temperatures. To McCoy's astonishment, Brand used some type of superhuman power to generate enough heat to keep them alive.
After meeting back up with the rest of the X-Men, Brand, Beast, Wolverine, Armor, Shadowcat, and their new ally Danger were part of an assault on the Breakworld's doomsday device before it could be fired at the Earth. During the ensuing battle against Breakworld soldiers, Brand dove into the path of a laser blast meant for Beast. Severely wounded, she explained to Beast she did it since as a genius he had the greatest chance for disarming the weapon. Her last words to Beast before passing out were to "save the damn world already."
Eventually Brand regained consciousness and rejoined the team. As McCoy tended to her wounds, he noted her rapid healing. When he attempted to draw more information out of her, Brand countered by revealing an intense sexual attraction to him. The X-Men and surviving S.W.O.R.D. strike team members headed toward the site where Colossus was prophesied to destroy the Breakworld, but Brand's team was attacked by Breakworld forces. When Brand was captured and threatened by several Breakworld men, she killed her attackers after revealing that "Brand" is not her surname, but a sobriquet referencing her powers. After the Breakworld mission ended, Brand offered McCoy a job with S.W.O.R.D., stating that she needs someone who will question her actions and help her avoid making mistakes. She reiterates her sexual attraction to him, telling McCoy when he brings up the fact that he's a "blue, furry monster" that her father, an alien, was one as well.
Ghost BoxEdit
Brand is called in for a consult when the X-Men come across a Ghost Box they find in Chaparanga Beach. After explaining that a Ghost Box is a device used to travel between parallel worlds, she and Cyclops argue because Brand believes, when it comes to Ghost Boxes, it is S.W.O.R.D. business, whereas Cyclops thinks it is mutant business. Brand backs off but informs Scott that the minute this investigation 'goes south' to give her a call. When Beast questions how to define their relationship, Brand says she is his Xenophiliac Experimentation Partner, prompting Beast to say she is his girlfriend.[3] She later fires a two-zettawatt laser from S.W.O.R.D. headquarters that destroys the Ghost Box and Forge's headquarters of Wundagore Mountain at Beast's request.[4]
Secret InvasionEdit
Brand is present at The Peak, S.W.O.R.D.s headquarters, when it is destroyed by a Skrull posing as Dum Dum Dugan. Due to an emergency suit, she and a few other S.W.O.R.D. agents are able to survive in space long enough to witness the arrival of the Skrull armada in Earth space. She later is able to board one of the Skrull armada's ships by breaking into the exterior. After making it to the control/camera room, she witnesses the death and destruction the Skrulls are causing all over Earth, which makes her shed a tear. She is discovered by a Skrull youngster and a guard, who subsequently points his gun at her.[2][5] She outsmarts the guards and kills every Skrull on board. She frees their prisoner, the hero Mister Fantastic, who takes her to the Savage Land. She sees that all of the "Earth heroes" who had crash landed there were actually Skrulls.[6] Brand later flies the Avengers to New York to participate in the final battle against the Skrull forces.
After the InvasionEdit
Beta Ray Bill visits Agent Brand aboard the rebuilt Peak seeking information on the whereabouts of Galactus. Brand confirms that S.W.O.R.D., as well as similar agencies of other species, share sightings of Galactus among themselves. Brand gives Bill the information but stressed that the world eater must never find out who gave him the information lest Galactus seek revenge on Earth. She also approaches Jessica Drew to recruit her into S.W.O.R.D., which she accepts. On Jessica's first mission, Brand sends her to Madripoor as well as giving her an alien detector.[7]
S.W.O.R.D.Edit
Brand along with Beast and Lockheed star in a 2009 five-issue S.W.O.R.D. series written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Steven Sanders.
In the volume, Henry Peter Gyrich manages to take several notable aliens into custody such as Noh-Varr, Adam X, Jazinda, Karolina Dean and Hepzibah as part of his effort to remove aliens from Earth, including Brand and Lockheed themselves. When the Peak and S.W.O.R.D itself are invaded by the Drenx, a race of brutal aliens, Brand, McCoy, Lockheed and their ally Death's Head manage to defeat them, reversing Gyrich's actions and getting him dismissed from the organization. It is also revealed Brand has a half-brother who is green and furry.[8]
Abigail Brand is seen helping Magneto to hide in the aftermath of the Avengers vs. X-Men events. She is also revealed to actually be a genetic mutant as well having inherited her human mother's X-gene. Abigail Brand was later murdered by one of Legion's multiple personalities while saving fellow S.W.O.R.D. teammate Sydren who was telepathically musing at the fact that Legion was getting more confident when he was merging his multiple personalities into his main personality. She was vaporized by a laser beam from that multiple personality leaving behind only a severed hand causing the Beast to mourn the loss of his girlfriend.[9] Brand was restored to life when Legion later altered reality.[10]
When Thanos invaded Earth during the Infinity storyline, S.W.O.R.D. was held and occupied. In desperation, Brand sent the Guardians of the Galaxy a request of help. This worked and Rocket Raccoon, Peter Quill and Gamora helped Brand free the station of intruders and restore vital defense systems. They were assisted by the mysterious help of Angela, a warrior of uncertain origins.[11]
Brand develops a friendly relationship with 'Broo', an intelligent, friendly Brood mutant alien attending the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. She attends as his 'parent' for graduation ceremonies.[12] Brand deals with being overtaken by an alien symbiote when S.W.O.R.D. is overtaken by the symbiote

where they get married
I feel like a courthouse or on The Peak and for some reason Sydren officiates because he’s totally legal to do so.
when they get married ( ie what time of day, what month and season etc. )
Probably like the middle of the night because they had to do it in a hurry for some reason.
what traditions they include ( do they get married under a chuppah and crush a glass, garter toss, ‘something borrowed, something blue,’ etc. )
Nothing.
what their wedding cake looks like
Abi does not care about cake. Justin wants a cake, because...it’s cake. So, he gets to choose and goes for a double layer chocolate/vanilla cake.
….who smashes cake into whose face
Abi smashes cake into Justin’s face. She didn’t even want the stupid cake.
who proposed to who first
I see Abigail doing this, but with a motive.
who walks down the aisle and who waits at the altar ( or neither )
There’s no walking. Get it done and over with.
what their wedding dresses / suits / other look like
Abi is definitely wearing her normal green/black stealth suit thing she wears and Justin has on a grey suit.
what their wedding colour scheme is and what sort of decor they have
Nothing. If it’s at the Peak, well, there’s space stuff there. So space stuff.
what flowers are in the bouquet ( if applicable. bonus: what do the flowers mean? )
Abi says flowers are pointless.
what their vows are ( eg poetry, traditional, improvised etc. )
Abi just follows along with whatever she needs to say. Justin gets kinda mushy.
if anyone’s late to the wedding
It’s an impromptu wedding, so no.
who’s in the bridal parties / groomsmen / other
Once again, Abi says it’s pointless but some of her co-workers want involved so they just get on either side.
what their bridal party / groomsmen / other are wearing
Whatever they were wearing when they showed up.
who gives speeches at the reception ( bonus: what do they say? recount a sweet memory or two between them? tell an embarrassing story? )
There is no reception. This is not a normal marriage/wedding.
who catches the bouquet( s )
Flowers are stupid, remember?
what their wedding photos are like ( are they sweet, with the couple holding hands or kissing or ~gazing into each others eyes~? are they silly, with a snapshot of the ‘cake-smash’ moment? or are they artistic, with one of them facing the sunset or holding their bouquets? )
Justin honestly wants pictures and Abi wants no part in it so he’s just taking selfies and trying to catch her looking somewhat happy. He wants memories~
what sort of food they have at the reception
No reception but they just eat whatever is in The Peak cafeteria and it’s awful.
who cries first during the ceremony
Justin.
how wild their reception gets ( who dances the best, who gets drunk first, etc. )
n o n e.
what their rings are like
Abi probably would have like a black silicone band and Justin would have a classic gold band.
what sort of favours they have ( heart shaped sparklers, mini champagne bottles, personalised candy etc. )
N a d a.
where they go for their honeymoon
Justin insists that they actually go somewhere. Abi agrees but she’s a sneaky bitch so she takes him to some planet that she has work to do on.
something memorable that happens during the party / ceremony ( do they run out of ice and someone goes to get it in full formal wear on foot, does anyone fall asleep in the middle of the party, etc. )
Abi swears at Sydren. A lot.
who officiates the ceremony
Sydren
what song their first dance is to
Abi doesn’t dance.
who gives who away as they walk down the aisle
Abi gives herself away because she belongs to no man.

Fun fact - Hank McCoy was replaced by a cartoon character for that very first panel. Not well circulated, that piece of knowledge, but the stand-in did great work, I think. Honestly, part of the reason that S.W.O.R.D works so well is that it's basically part workplace comedy, part Star Trek space adventures, part superhero dramatics, and starting off with the tried and true 'the boss' wastrel family member turns up to cause problems' sitcom plot is a ton of fun when it's someone as uptight as Abigail Brand. Absolutely love Sydren hiding behind his pad in that very first panel. The Drenx also feel like a subtle take-that at every science fiction alien race with incredibly unreasonable demands that our heroes have to try and peacefully engage with despite the fact that at some point you just have to kick someone in the teeth and say, no. Props to Steven Sanders' expression work, I love his version of Sydren. He's gonna deserve a medal by the time we're done. Incidentally, Lothi is totally one of those white guys with dreads in alien form. I will not be taking questions at this time. What I do want to talk about, though, is how ridiculously broad-shouldered Hank is! The shoulderpads alone look like they're three times the size of Abigail's! And the damn hippie has his long blue hair just cascading over them. I'm into it.

there are times still, if she’s been over-working herself and not gotten proper rest or has been taking in too many visions, that the lines between what memories are her own and those that aren’t will begin to become blurred and she’ll lose a bit of her sense of self. it’s always rather frightening and overwhelming when this happens and often she’ll need to take down time in order to sort through all the images flooding her head. she has a journal filled with memories of her own that she’ll read during these periods in order to help better reclaim her sense of who ksenija sydren actually is.
