I bought a reprinted copy of the original TCM 2 script, here are my favorite / some of the most notable highlights!

Before I get into the actual script snippets I want to talk a little bit about the scripting process for TCM2 briefly, because it's interesting to me.

In the Making Of documentary for TCM2, writer L.M. Kit Carson describes the hectic and frantic conditions that he had to write this script in, a major factor to this being the strict time constraints they were working under. Due to this, the movie actually began filming before the script had even been finished, and it wasn't uncommon for a scene to be filmed as it was still being penned. Lines and directions would be changed by the minute, and entire scenes had to be either cut or reworked in almost no time at all. For these reasons, there isn't a "final draft" of the TCM2 script, only the original, which is massively different from the version of the film we see on screen.

I won't be posting every change made between the original script and the final (because at that point I might as well just post a PDF), but I'll be noting some of my favorites / the most notable or interesting ones I discovered while reading. If you have any questions about other changes I noticed, or want to know about a specific scene that I didn't cover here, feel free to shoot me an ask and I'll find it for you, if it exists!

Without any further preamble, here are the snippets:

Our introduction to stretch, describing her as a "rangy Sam Shepard sexpot cowgirl," implying that that last descriptor is more literal than metaphorical. Would have liked to see this in canon tbh, even if just as a passing reference.

From the hotel scene - I snagged this one because I liked that it revealed Stretch as a ZZ-Top fan :)

Again from the hotel scene, and another example of this movie's rampant sexuality that I enjoy, lol.

Drayton on the car phone scene - I just thought the "he's a happy guy" / "he's not a happy guy" switchup was funny.

Chop Top's introduction! He's actually got some interesting changes that I'll get into in a moment.

And here it is! Originally, Chop Top was supposed to be Nubbins from the original, given the name Platehead in this version of the script. Interestingly, no mention of Vietnam is made in this version, so his reason for having the skull plate is unexplained.

To end off the first part of this post, the original ice tub scene in full :) I found this version interesting for many reasons, but especially that Bubba's destructive outburst at the end is explicitly referenced as a demonstration, like the sexual behaviour of a territorial animal. Very interesting...

Hi, im a beginner horror enjoyer and im really disturbed by a lot of gore but i wanna understand the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies bc ive heard theyre hugely influential on the genre (rightly so too)

I figured with all this id ask the foremost texas chainsaw scholar i am aware of

Could you tell me the basics, if its gross (im really bad at tolerating gross out horror and gore played realistic), and any fun tidbits?

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was hugely influential on the genre and set the standard for low budget horror and inspired future filmmakers to rely more on psychological terror over gore & violence! It was also seemingly the birth of a lot of horror tropes, like big, masked killers and using power tools for weapons.

Texas Chainsaw's story is inspired by serial killers like Ed Gein and Elmer Wayne Henley. The movie’s director, Tobe Hooper, was inspired by the graphic coverage of violence by San Antonio news outlets and based elements of the plot on murderer Ed Gein, who was a notorious serial killer who made furniture out of human body parts and created a mask made of human skin. The movie’s underlying themes are mostly the horrors of isolation, and the dangers of unchecked capitalism. The movie is also a metaphor for the Nixon-era mayhem and the government’s deceit toward the public during the 1970s. Hooper intentionally misled audiences by claiming that the movie was based on a true story to attract a wider audience.

I honestly don't know how to give you the basics aside from a plot synopsis because I would, hand to God, be sitting here for about 12 hours minimum going into every weird little detail, like the intricacies of bubba's mental issues and being forced to take on a female role for his abusive older brothers, or all the absolutely insane shit that happened during filming. And that'd just be me talking about the FIRST film.

But if you want to ask me more questions or see more Texas chainsaw related stuff you can ask/look over at my blog @chainsawhouse. I just hate to gum up my main blog with this particular interest.

Also, my fun tidbit is that they've recently confirmed that there is a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the works, under the title 'Texas Chainsaw Legacy'! Very fun imo.

 " Shot the iconic Texas Chainsaw Massacre under the swing dolly move this date, August 8, fifty years ago. Story behind the shot: We had shot first week when production decided we needed a shot list. Shut down for a week while director Tobe Hooper shot-listed the movie. First day back, given the shot list when I got to set, and proceeded to set up the first shot. When Tobe arrived he changed everything, and we carried on ignoring the shot list. The second day the same thing. I asked Tobe what was going on? He replied “Oh Dan’l man, didn’t I tell you. I just wrote that to get them off our backs so they’d let us go back to work. We’ll block with the actors on set to design the shots” End of the second-day production realized we were not shooting the shot list, they came down on us hard and demanded we follow the shot list from that point on. On the third day, we shot the swing scene according to the shot list. When we completed the scene and preparing to move on, I had an idea. I explained to Tobe that we have sixty feet of track and a low platform dolly. I was sure I could lay on my stomach holding the 16mm Éclair NPR camera low off of the front of the platform and be able to fit under the swing. I described a shot where the camera starts behind the swing and glides forward following @chainsawgal as she stands and walks towards the house which grows and grows as it overtakes the frame. He loved it and told me to set it up. We started laying track towards the house. Of course, the A.D. got involved and told us we had to move on and could not shoot the shot because it wasn’t on the shot list. Tobe explained that I had come up with the perfect shot to set the tone for the opening of the second act, and we are going to make that shot. He told him “You may fire us and we won’t be back tomorrow, but today I’m the director and he’s the DP, so get the hell out of our way!” I will always remember and respect Tobe for fighting that fight. “All of which I knew absolutely nothing about! I'm laughing as I write. We knew nothing about that war going on between you guys and 'production', or that you'd come up with the brilliant shot. All I knew was that as Dottie was touching up my makeup and keeping me busy chatting me up, out of the corner of my eye, I looked over across the yard and saw you crouched under the slatted porch swing that had been moved to the yard, the very swing I had been told I would be sitting in for my next scene.  There was Daniel, lying on the grass with his camera, not 10 inches from where I was to park my red shorts. I asked Dottie, "Hey, Dottie, what's Daniel doing under the swing with his camera?" I remember Dottie mumbling, "I dunno..." I'd only the day or two prior turned down a 'production' request to do a skinny-dipping scene. "No, thank you." Anyhoo, had I a clue about your tracking shot and the concept, I might have felt a little more confident and not quite as suspicious of the lot of you as I definitely was when we shot the scene. All through it and afterward, I worried about what Tobe had said to me to convince me all would be fine, "Aww, Teri, goddammit!! We're gonna shoot All Around It!!” He'd had enough of my arguing, so I took my seat on the swing with that camera perched on the ground beneath me. ‘…all around’ WHAT was all I kept thinking?? 🤔 I can assure you, I wasn't worried about Leatherface. Not one bit... 👀🎥😏😱, not then, or for the next 13 months when it was released in October 1974. It's an amazing shot and I'm so grateful I was the "Pam" that got to do it!  🏆 Now, I only wish it could be a giant billboard on Sunset Boulevard. Isn't it great no one listened to me At All?!! 🤣 I’m sure audience’s do applaud. I can't share your post here on IG, but I'll share it on Pammie's FB page.
