Thinking about Callum being confronted by a Dark Version of himself that he then refuses (but who is still undeniably a part of him), and how then Viren confronts an Uncorrupted Version of himself who he then accepts as still part of him. And that happens through the mirror for Viren, but for Callum it happens through the cube. And in order to connect to the ocean Arcanum Callum had to accept that dark part of himself, the part that would do dark magic, that would do "anything for his family, however dangerous, however vile". He essentially un-made his s2 choice to deny Dark Callum.

I am so accustomed to seeing the adults in children's media portrayed as antagonistic obstacles for the child protagonists to outwit and overcome. So, I really appreciate how in The Dragon Prince, Callum, Ezran, and Rayla are able to approach and rely upon the adults, strangers even, that they meet during their journey. The specific examples I want to talk about are both from 1x07: the doctor and the mercenary.
When Ezran and Callum meet the doctor, he is genuinely concerned for the boys, even though he can tell that they're not being completely upfront with him. He gives them his hospitality and listens without judgement or reproach while they tell him about the accident with the egg. When he realizes his expertise is inadequate, he keeps his promise not to tell on them, and points them towards hope.
Rayla's meeting with the mercenary is more tense; he is understandably skeptical of her intentions after she chases and corners him in an alley. But when he realizes her sincerity, he heeds her plea for help. His words ("but it'll burn you") and his body language (his hesitation, his worried facial expression) belie his empathy - at least, until he sees that she's an elf, and his prejudice overcomes him.
I also want to give a mention to Villads and Lujanne, who stepped up as mentors/guides for the trio, and offered their assistance, advice, and kindness without expectations of recompense.
In reality, most people are good and want to do right by others(1). The vast majority of the strangers and people you meet are not scheming, nefarious opportunists-in-waiting. If you approach with vulnerability and ask someone for help, they will honestly try to assist you.
I just find it such a refreshing, appropriately wholesome take. Grownups aren't out to get you, kids. As someone who was raised in the "stranger danger" era, I am glad to have tdp's more nuanced and honest version of reality to show and discuss with my own children.

Honestly I think that "Rayla is worse than both Aaravos and Viren combined" is the most fucking stupid and upsetting takes of the fandom. Because, as has been said before: RAYLA WAS A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD TRAUMATIZED GIRL WITH A FALSE SENSE OF DUTY FROM GROWING UP IN A WORLD THAT MAKES MURDER A RESPONSIBILITY WHO MADE ONE FUCKING MISTAKE. ONE. Sure, it was a big mistake. But compare that to the literal remorseless crimes of Aaravos and Viren's abuse, and the fact that he LITERALLY ATTEMPTED TO MURDER CHILDREN TO GET POWER, leaving your boyfriend to deliver justice really is not all that bad. And you know what? She apoligized! She undestands what she did ws wrong, and she fucking actually tried to fix burnt bridges! Aaravos didn't do shit! Viren hasn't talked to his son in years and didn't mention him at all during his redemption speech! Terry literally killed someone and none of you are calling him a terrible person/worse than Aaravos! So fucking leave her alone! Please!

so I finally got done watching S5 of The Dragon Prince and ghgnghghggngh why do I have such a mixed bag love hate relationship with this show (spoilers)
I want to love this show but there's so many things that just don't land and don't work, and yet here I am, hooked once again, because after 8 episodes of cringe humor and weird dialogue it fed me some crumbs of delicious Aaravos content.
I find so many of the accents so goddamn stilted and awkward. The french sun fire elves are the worst. I don't object to french-sounding elves in principle but dear lord does it sound unnatural and strained
SO much of the humor just does not land and the pacing of individual scenes is just ??? ATLA had some very kiddie humor here or there too, and I love the somewhat darker and more mature tone of TDP but jfc it feels like they need to hammer every joke home with so much time that you'd think they were planning for a laugh track
ep 8 and 9 were so much better than the whole rest of the season because once this show lets itself focus on action and drama, it's actually pretty fucking good, but for some reason you need to get through a first half season of awkward goofs.
Terry annoys me so much. Yay trans rep, but why the utterly random coming out out of nowhere (that was S04 I know but I watched it very recently okay) and his whole sounding like a therapist shit towards Claudia, like yes, it could be funny that this random wood elf does aroma therapy on his dark mage gf but everything somehow turns awkward in the execution
The library showdown was generally cool but the framing for why Amaya told them to leave without her was so fucking weird: you have this moment of Dragon Ex Machina, Zubeia wiping away the demon bears with ease, and then suddenly when Amaya is back in the frey after grabbing Bait, they're suddenly out of time and need to leave that instant??? Like I see what they were going for, obviously Zubeia was under real threat from the demon bears, but imo the framing/visualization of that threat did not work at all and I audibly went "WHY" at my screen at the random "you have to leave without me" thing.
That being said there's some shit that goes extremely hard and I'm here for it:
Rayla just fucking dismembering Claudia apparently wtf??
I enjoyed the sexy fish pirate man, I hope he survived getting eaten
I am an utter addict for Aaravos' voice and even the flashback repetitions in Janai's nightmares were legit enough to get my attention again
I am very excited for how someone is going to end up saving Viren's life against his will and I will gladly read fanfic of it
I had the 'our child' thing spoiled by being careless on tumblr but seeing it actually on screen was better than expected, love that for my OTP, toxic af parenthood is just what they needed
I really expected there to be more Aaravos since this show got renamed to Mystery of Aaravos false advertising smh.
They got creative with Dragon designs this season and I support that
out of all the things I found weird and cringe, I am 100% here for Zubaia getting randomly healed by a funky little gnome that calls himself the mushroom mage, 10/10 no notes
young viren hot
Rayla and Callum worked much better for me towards the end of the season when they got more comfortable with each other, love that for them, some delicious drama when the sexy fish man tortures them in front of each other, good for them, that's my shit
Considering all the things I liked about the last 2-3 episodes I feel nitpicky and weird for complaining about the first 7 or so but UGH it was a bit of a pain to get through them tbh. There is so much I deeply, deeply appreciate about what this show tries to do, as a high fantasy kids show with an overarching story, gorgeous visuals and explicit lgbtq and disability rep that I feel like an ass for complaining about it so much, but god damn there are so many things that are just unbearably cringe about it and OH MY GOD I just remembered the god damn "maybe you should express your love like a bee, here just move your tushy like that" scene holy FUCK can someone please give me an edit of this show with about three times the Aaravos screentime and all this second hand embarassment removed

the ability tdp has to never make me hate characters is astounding
i mean i obviously have my blorbos but i literally love every character in this show and that is so incredibly rare cuz let's be real i'm discriminatory and am only drawn to queer teenagers but oml
all the main characters are just perfection and every minor character is immaculate and even the super complicated ones like claudia n avizandum n ???? what the fuck ????? VIREn ?!????!! how they managed to make me feel for him i do not know
and even the straight up assholes are too cool/smoking hot for me to not love them i mean aaravos, finnegrin (he's on the edge,) my lawfully wedded wife kim'dael and that absolute whore slut stupid ass beautiful gorgeous stunning bitch miyana
(karim is the exception i just hate his ass [in a good way show wise])
and what's more impressive is the ships???? aka everything involving claudia aka everything morally questionable??? bc i am The most violent vehement shipper but i cannot be mad. like callum + claudia is wild bc i love them individually so i love them together but i also despise them together but i also LIVVEEEE for the tragedy that is their love. and claudia and terry bc tbh imho terry deserves better and i'm kinda hoping they're not endgame but i'm also not at all angered by their on screen presence in fact i enjoy them what is happening

The absolute retcon that is the unicorn genocide does not and will not count until and unless it appears in the show. You can't just add an entire genocide in your supplementary materials in order to justify another genocide in main canon! That's not how it works. The children subjected to this show aren't going to be buying the goddamn extra lore books. You can't just retroactively make shit up! Why are they doing this?
God, if I see one more person use the unicorn excuse again–

Note to my followers: I'm not pleased with everything in the new The Dragon Prince season but I'd rather die than use the word "critical" because I have war flashbacks about SU crits. So my negativity tag about TDP will be "tdp rant", feel free to block it if you don't want to see it

The dragon prince season 4 rant(spoilers from like line one)
There's a lot of ppl complaining rn about aaravos only getting one scene but I think this was very well done for two reasons. One is fandoms love puzzles. Finding all the pieces, seeing what goes together and figuring out what the final picture is. But once they're done with the puzzle they move right onto the next thing to solve. They'll either not appreciate the work the crew puts in after solving the puzzle(I've done this in the past with shows like gravity falls- trust me I know) or just treat it as another show and move on to the next hyped up thing. There's also fans who's reviews/ reactions I've seen on yt and LITERALLY IN SEASON 2 they said "this guy's cool but once you know the mystery and big reveal he's kinda boring" IN SEASON 2!!!! SO YEAH NO WONDER TDP CREW ARE ONLY GIVING HIM SO FEW LINES.
Secondly the show is titled "mystery of aaravos" not "discovering aaravos" or "all about aaravos". "Mystery of aaravos". What kind of mystery reveals itself at the start of a new chapter in the show? And yeah yeah it's season 4 but season 3 wasn't "mystery of arravos" it was the dragon prince. We didn't get most of tdp clues until the end of season 3 / during the hiatus excluding maybe things like the elarion poem? Idk when that came in could've been season 1/2 as that was when we first saw the ancient book I believe right? Correct me if I'm wrong I need to rewatch the show. Also side note the show is definitely not a long show. I work full time 10-6 night shifts Mon to Fri and I still binged it all in 8 hours the Sunday after guy Fawkes night. So yeah even if aaravos only gets one scene so what? It's not like we're sitting through 40/50 min eps to get a crumb of hot elf man.
Tumblr media
Oh right yeah tdp is made by a lot of atla crew so they know what they're doing when they only keep the big bad in one major scene (which he slayed in btw) it's not just fanservice
Tumblr media
As fun as the fanservice is Aaravos' tiny scene is a great display of his power(which we've seen little regarding the extent it can go btw esp with a non consenting host) and raises many questions for us to theorise on(like is Aaravos' a monster fucker?/j... Unless). The crew knows how to stir the fandom and indeed were probably predicting this dissapointed response when they made Aaravos' scene. Yet they kept it this way bc that's how you reel in the old fans and even viewers. With puzzles and mysteries and hidden clues. It's also a good way to keep casual viewers who may miss the hidden clues on their toes. Even if most of the hints and clues fly over their heads they'll still think "why is this guy fallen?" "What does he gain from manipulating people this way?"(which is a whole debate of its own after elarion's poem).
So tldr: the breadcrumbs we get of aaravos are intentional and a lot of people don't get that

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts of people wondering how Janai is not completely fluent in KSL or doesn’t “know as much as she should”, and I wonder how many of them have actually tried to learn any languages later in life, especially with a high profile job, and when they may not be language inclined. So buckle up, because do I have a rant/explanation for you.
First of all, she’s a queen after watching her sister get murder, and her home become unliveable. She has had to find a place to stay, build that city of tents, figure out food and supplies, maintain peace between two formerly opposing races in order to rebuild, write peace treaties etc. All the while having to deal with the grief of losing her sister. It’s a miracle that she has time for herself and Amaya, especially when you also consider that Amaya is a General of a different kingdom and has duties of her own to achieve.
If you say “Well Kazi is there to teach Janai whenever Amaya isn’t there”, it’s true, yet you don’t think Kazi has other duties outside of teaching KSL? It also doesn’t change Janai’s need for sleep either. Kazi still must’ve taught her much of KSL, since Janai is able to read it fluently.
Which leads to my next point: reading KSL and “speaking” KSL are two different things, and both are difficult to do. There are plenty of people that can understand a language but have little to no capability to speak it. KSL is no different, and is arguably harder. We are conditioned to speak with gestures and facial expressions unique to our culture and personal quirks. To consistently and consciously break that habit to speak KSL is hard to do - just like it is to speak another language. You have to decide what the other person has said, think of your own response, and then translate that response into that language, and speak it. On top of that, languages, including KSL, have verb structures which determines what order you speak in. Japanese is V3 (Verb 3), which means that they end a sentence with the verb. An example: in English, we would say “I walked to the shops.” In Japanese, that sentence would be “To the shops I walked.” when translated back into English. And all languages have exemptions and quirks and are a pain in the arse to remember.
Janai, despite her busy schedule, has managed to successfully learn what Amaya is saying to her, allowing them to communicate via KSL reading by Janai and lip reading via Amaya. Janai is also shown to utilise KSL whenever she can, including during moments where she was going through strong feelings, which is hard because she, naturally, vents through words and reactionary gestures rather than KSL. That was my initial annoyance to; with Janai looking down or away when talking, however that’s how people naturally talk and when she did that in an emotional state, it’s just her reverting back to instinct, which is okay. It’s like speaking a sentence in one language and using your native language to say a word you don’t remember in the initial language. Also, Janai has three fingers and a thumb, and can’t sign specific words like usual because of it, yet she still manages to work around it. That alone proves her devotion, and she won’t stop learning.
Also, take into consideration on how Janai learns. She may be more inclined to learn by observation than by doing, or she focused on reading Amaya first because it was more important to understand Amaya first instead of being able to speak it. Amaya has managed most of her life by lip reading others, because KSL isn’t common, so she can understand Janai. That’s why it was more important to Janai at the time to understand Amaya. Then, when she could, she focused on learning to talk to Amaya in her language, in KSL.
I learnt Japanese in high school for five years, and even then, I could only speak rudimentary Japanese, sounding similar to a child. I could understand what I read more than what I could hear, picking up only key words and trying to understand what they were saying. If you think it’s so easy to learn a language inside and out in two years on top of a high power job, then by all means give it a try. Some may even be successful at it if they’re wired that way. Yet even then, it’s extremely hard to do.
My biggest gripe about these comments though is that most of the complainers more than likely have seven year old unfinished fanfics on their computers that haven’t been even touched in as long (no hate here - I have the same except even older), and think that they can talk shit about a woman that managed to put all her time and effort into understanding and communicating with her fiancé into two years and still produce more of a result. They manage to communicate in their own way every day, and through that, they still found love and happiness. And that is most important.
I’d rather talk about their overall cuteness, especially the “two cakes” talk - I kept screaming from the adorableness of it all

Screw Writing Strong Women
“Women shouldn’t be valued because we are strong, or kick-ass, but because we are people. So don’t focus on writing characters who are strong. Write characters who are people.”

Do we think moonshadow elves make note of what phase of the moon it is when they're born. I think it'd be neat if Rayla was born under the half-moon.

I’m sorry to be rude but if you’re not excited for Sol Regem to be back in the plot I don’t trust you.
His story in Season 2 has been one of the most complex and interesting and as either another antagonist or uneasy ally he’s great for the story they’re telling this season.
Tumblr media
Sol Regem is the perfect representation of the conflict between humans and elves going too far on both sides. Further considering that Aaravos helped humans learn dark magic THE THING THAT STARTED THE CONFLICT THAT LEAD TO HIS BLINDNESS bringing him back is a wonderful choose if they choose to explore that plot point.
But even it they don’t the fact they’re setting up a Viren redemption that contrast beautifully with Sol Regem’s personal philosophy of humans being unable to change after all these years from his trauma.
And the potential of meeting Callum and Rayla again! Seeing a human use primal magic! Possibly fighting the Dragon Queen if she doesn’t get uncorrupted, BECOMING CORRUPTED HIMSELF? GETTING MANIPULATED BY AARAVOS!
There is no way for them to mess Sol Regem up. I don’t care if you think he’s rude or annoying he’s one of the most important characters to being into this story for the magic and human conflict they’re building.

It's so weird to me when some people shit on Rayllum because main boy x main girl is "cliche". Like yeah It's the most common thing with fictional couples but does it matter as long as It's good written? As I see it‚ cliches aren't bad as long as they are well done and these two are. I would rather have the main boy x main girl any day that a main randomly falling for someone at the end without development at all just to be "original" because I have seen it in some media and It's just… Ugh. I don't care about breaking a cliche I care about a good written relationship.

After watching The Dragon Prince s5
I realized All this stuff we've been doing to ourselves, bottling up our feelings and living with a mentally unhealthy routine, saying that "It's easier somehow". We're like Claudia. Performing dark magic because it "Has to be done" to save her father, protect her family. And she didn't win in the end. Her spells always failed after a while. And what happened to Viren, embodying dark magic his entire life and realizing the truth only at his death. You get what I'm saying? The stuff that humans aren't supposed to do to themselves is like dark magic. We gotta try primal magic. Callum found a way. There's always that pure way. Primal magic will probably save you from the bottom of the ocean (or the bottom of your shower). Primal magic is expressing your feelings, acknowledging what needs to be acknowledged like the inability to control everything in the ocean. Dark magic is going to eventually kill us. Let's figure out how to use primal magic.

Aaravos has every right to be pissed off at Viren.
“You ungrateful bastard! I gave you power! Put you on the throne! Made you king! Gave you your very own magical army! Gave you even more power! And then after your dumbass gets killed, I brought you back to life! Oh did I forget to mention that I carried your baby?!! A baby that I made for the sole purpose of you not having to sacrifice your own kids! Just so that I could bring you back to life for good! And this is how you thank me?!!! FUCK YOU!!! No wonder your wife left you!”
