Supplements involving de-oxidizing micronutrients (e vitamin, vit c, beta-carotene and also selenium) can help keep an oxidant-antioxidant equilibrium. Latest books implies rapport involving oxidative status and ALK assay lung function. Objectives To synthesize active understanding of the effect involving vitamin C, e vitamin, beta-carotene and selenium in CF lungs ailment. Search strategy The Cochrane CF and Anatomical Disorders Team CF Tests Signup, PubMed, CINAHL and AMED were searched utilizing comprehensive lookup tactics. We contacted experts involving integrated scientific studies along with checked out research provides of these scientific studies for further, probably appropriate reports. Last research regarding CF Trials Signup: 09 Sept The year 2010. Selection criteria Randomized controlled trials along with quasi-randomized manipulated tests of folks along with CF along with clearly said analysis conditions, looking at vitamin e d-alpha, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene and also selenium (separately or perhaps in mix) for you to placebo or even regular attention. Data assortment and analysis Two experts separately selected studies, produced information along with examined probability of bias. All of us approached trialists to get missing info. Major final results are breathing and excellence of existence; supplementary final results tend to be oxidative strain, swelling, bmi, times upon prescription medication along with adverse occasions throughout supplementing. In the event that meta-analysed, research have been subgrouped according to mixed or solitary anti-oxidant supplementation. Main results Four randomized manipulated trial offers and one quasi-randomized controlled trial were provided; simply a few tests (Eighty seven participants) offered info suitable for investigation. Determined by a couple of trials, there wasn't any considerable advancement in lung function; one test indicated important development in standard of living favouring management, indicate difference -0.Summer points about the high quality involving well-being size (95% self confidence time period -0.12 in order to -0.10). Depending on a pair of studies, selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase chemical significantly increased to be replaced by combined supplementation, mean variation 1.Sixty models for every gr of haemoglobin (95% CI Zero.30 to 2.Ninety days) as well as selenium supplementing, suggest difference 15.30 models for each gram regarding haemoglobin (95% CI A couple of.Twenty two to be able to 18.16). All plasma televisions anti-oxidant amounts, apart from vitamin C, considerably improved upon with supplementing. Authors' conclusions There definitely seems to be conflicting proof concerning the clinical effectiveness regarding antioxidant using supplements within CF. Depending on the data, anti-oxidants seem to lessen quality lifestyle as well as oxidative strain; however, few studies led files in the direction of investigation. Vision 20 Reviews
Vision 20 Reviews - Groundbreaking New Report on Vision 20 for Eyesight
Vision 20 by Zenith Labs is an eye care supplement that, by its ingredients, tries to protect your eyesight.
Vision 20 is a dietary supplement that helps protect your eyes' lens and retina from harmful blue radiation. This radiation is commonly emitted by phones, gadgets, and other things that have monitors. It uses natural ingredients that are found in nature to keep our eyes from going into eventual decline. It contains carotenoids, which are substances that help keep our eye’s lens, retina, and macula healthy.
This, in turn, gives us an abundance of good eyesight, which is essential in our everyday lives. Vision 20 supplement was inspired by the humble Marigold, whose orange coloration was a clear indication of abundance in carotenoids.
Vision 20 supplement can help us see in different ranges, whether near and far. It can also make us see better during nighttime, which is a clear indication of healthy eyesight. According to the official website, it is used by around 9,000 Americans right now, and the testimonials show that the product works full-time. This latest review will show you the supplement's ins and outs and how it came to be. Vision 20 is based on the Bible, and even though you are an atheist, I suggest you continue reading because these are parts of the Bible that are backed up by scientific facts and data. Without further ado, let us jump into it.

Vision 20’s Biblical Relation?
Vision 20 was inspired by the Bible. In the book of Isaiah, a prophet of the same name, helped King Hezekiah by giving him figs. While initially used to treat the boils, this also affected his eyesight. It became blurred as he was consumed by sickness.
King Hezekiah, upon being put and spread upon by mashed figs, not only cured his boils but also improved his eyesight. Why? It is because figs contain high amounts of Retinyl Palmitate, a form of Vitamin A. This has let him see again in not just the spiritual sense
but also the physical sense. This is awesome. Now, we can see how the Bible is relevant even though it is a tool of religion. It is still a historical account, and we know that these document types are dependent on the writer's interpretation. Of course, this makes this Holy Scripture awry the credibility, but it is safe to say that science backs this manuscript up.
Vision 20 Manufacturer
Doctor Ryan Shelton made vision 20. He is currently the Medical Director of Zenith Labs, a company that makes dietary supplements for a living. If we can even observe further, we can see that he is a man of God since he injects lots of biblical sense into his studies.
Zenith Labs comprises health professionals who manufacture a variety of supplements that cater to older people. Other supplements that Zenith Labs make include joint health and anti-aging supplements, which are rich with antioxidants.
Being the head of the whole operation, Shelton is a researcher whose job is to look for progressive, natural health solutions for everyone in the world. While that is a fancy way of saying it, he is a testimony of others' goodwill, having helped hundreds of people already through personal means. Also, being a naturally-inclined researcher, he publishes papers during his pastime. He also puts in dozens of credible sources to the Vision 20 supplement, which means that it should be useful since it was based and made through scientific methods and means. Overall, Doctor Shelton and his team at
Zenith Labs are considered to be reliable, trustworthy, and credible among all accounts. They show their faces in public too, which is a plus sign since they are willing to bet themselves for the product that they made. Now that is commitment and honesty in one.
How Does It Work?
Vision 20 works by bombarding our body with antioxidants and other substances that are beneficial to the eye, such as Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and different forms of Vitamin A. We know that Vitamin A is extremely beneficial for our eyes, so this is a good sign already that this product indeed works. Just take one capsule a day, and you are good to go.
The supplement works by repairing and protecting your eyes against blue light radiation. Now, blue light radiation is commonly found everywhere. It is commonly emitted by technology that we have now. Any monitor that we are looking at right now emits blue light radiation. You might be thinking this is an exaggeration, but don’t you wonder why
your eyes feel tired and itchy after staring at a monitor for long periods? It is because your eyes are being constantly harassed by this radiation that is slowly eating away your eyesight.
Vision 20 takes a step further by protecting your eyes and repairing your eyes with the help of antioxidants found in different sources. Not only does this help our eyes, but it benefits our body as a whole since antioxidants are the essential substances that we need to keep ourselves healthy in the long run. This, in turn, can help us see nearer,
farther, and in the dark. It is beneficial, considering that the sense of sight is one of the most important things that a human must have to live a full, happy, and contented life.
By taking this supplement, you can protect and repair your eyes through natural and organic nutrients. Either these nutrients come from figs or carrots, it does not matter. What matters is the nutrient itself. Dr. Shelton and his team carefully came up with a formula that will help revolutionize your eyesight, and trust me when I say it is useful.

Vision 20 Ingredients
Vision 20 is not necessarily made from figs. Looking back, no pun intended, it was figs that made King Hezekiah well again. If we are to look at this from a scientific point of view, figs are antibacterial fruits rich in antioxidants and Vitamin A. They are a well-rounded fruit to begin with. While King Hezekiah in the Bible primarily suffered boils, Dr. Shelton and his team noticed that his eyesight also improved based on the Second Book of Kings' writings.
Channeling his inner scientific side with his religious optimism, Shelton went on to take the critical component that makes figs good for the eyes – Vitamin A. This vitamin, for the knowledge of everyone, has many forms. Thankfully, Shelton is a research buff and has this knowledge in mind. He went for two of the most potent forms of Vitamin A – Retinyl Palmitate and Beta-carotene.
Once getting these facts laid down, he combined support elements for Vitamin A, and the rest is history for this particular dietary supplement. With a backgrounder on how figs and Vision 20 came to be, let us jump into Vision 20 ingredients' specifics.
The main ingredients are:
Retinyl Palmitate is a form of Vitamin A, which is more suited to the cell
regeneration side. It is commonly used to boost the amount of Vitamin A that a person has in his/her body. Vitamin A deficiency is a thing for people with
weakened eyesight, and having regular dosage of this substance can keep your eyes healthy in the long run.
Beta-carotene. Perhaps the most famous form of Vitamin A, is a carotenoid commonly found in many fruits, vegetables, and whole grains! While Retinyl Palmitate is focused on repairing our eye’s integrity, Beta-carotene is focused on making us less sensitive to light changes and preventing our eyesight from
declining faster than you can say eye degeneration. What is more, studies show it can reduce the risk of breast cancer!
These are the two main ingredients, but our bodies do not absorb vitamin A and its several forms. This has been the case for many years, and with increased exposure to blue light radiation, this rate of less absorption is taking a toll on our precious eyesight. This is why Dr. Shelton added Zinc.
Zinc – This mineral encourages our body to absorb Vitamin A. By taking in Zinc, we can increase Vitamin A absorption rate by three times! Other than that, the primary function of this mineral is to repair and maintain our cells and boost our immune system, hasten our healing process, and boost our overall health.
The next ingredients that I will show you are the support ingredients for Vision 20, all put in to make your eyes better by the second.
Lutein – this is also a carotenoid that is usually found in our eye’s macula and retina. These parts of the eye are responsible for taking in images reflected by the lenses of our eyes. Thus, adding Lutein can strengthen it and prevent
age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is common among old folk. It is also used to treat cataracts and early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Zeaxanthin – this is the carotenoid that actively fights off high-energy light
waves inside your eye. By adding Zeaxanthin, we have an active contender against the blue light radiation that continually bombards us in this modern world. It is Lutein's partner, whereas Lutein fights of the harmful effects of
oxidization while Zeaxanthin fights off outside threats such as mentioned above.
Lycopene – commonly found in tomatoes, this heart-smart ingredient is a potent antioxidant used to protect cells from oxidization and other related damage.
Lycopene is used in Vision 20 to serve as an antioxidant buffer to regenerate the eye’s degrading cells quickly. With nothing to damage them, they can focus on recovery.
Taurine – people say Taurine is only used to make you smart, but that is not the case otherwise. This amino acid can also help produce more cells, which is beneficial for losing his/her eyesight. Lycopene is the shield, while Taurine is the concrete used to build stuff.
Grape Seed Extract – this extract can boost good cholesterol levels and improve
overall blood circulation. It can also boost your immune system thanks to the presence of Polyphenols. While this seems to have no relation to eyesight
improvement, a study from the Molecular Vision Journal suggests that grape seed extract can also protect your lenses from outside threats.
Bilberry Extract – last but not least, there is the Bilberry. This extract is excellent
for blood circulation, gout, urinary tract infections, and more. It is mainly used as an antioxidant, which means it can fight off eye damage from internal sources.

EyeSight Benefits
For one, the Vision 20 supplement has high amounts of antioxidants on it. Why is this the case? It is because Vision 20 also focuses on getting your past eyesight back. Think of it as something that protects and heals at the same time. It is a cool supplement overall. Antioxidants help our cells regenerate and feel young again. By chugging in significant amounts of antioxidants, we only not help our eyes get better, but we also feel better in general since these nutrients will be circulated throughout our whole body.
Secondly, Vision 20 is aimed at making our eyesight crystal clear. Carotenoids such as Vitamin A, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin paired with Zinc can work wonders, and as King Hezekiah’s eyesight got better with vitamin A-rich fruits, yours can be like that too! Overall, Vision 20 gives benefits to our eyes and our whole body as well.
Vision 20 Ingredients Side Effects
With tons of benefits and pros come easily unavoidable cons. We are just going to backtrack a little. The recommended dosage for Vision 20 is one capsule a day. Keep this in mind, as overdosing can undoubtedly show signs of side effects one way or another.
To start, Vitamin A overdose is a nasty thing to have. It is called Hypervitaminosis A.
Isaiah only gave King Hezekiah an ample amount of fig. You should only get an ample amount of Vision 20 too. It can cause bone pain and skin changes. If you do not want
these symptoms, only take the recommended dosage of one a day. We understand that you want your real eyesight back, but please do it in moderation.
Other than this nasty threat, you can also experience other mild symptoms such as
dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach pain, and flu-like symptoms if you overdose. In short, do not overdose, and you will be fine in the long run.
To inform you, too, there is an infrequent side effect from ingesting Lutein and Zeaxanthin. It is not harmful, so it is okay unless you are vain. Your skin can occasionally turn yellow. You should be fine if you are following the recommended dosage. In summary, Vision 20 side effects are only prevalent if you are hard-headed.
Where do you Buy Vision 20?
You can buy Vision 20 right off the Vision 20 official website, which is below.
Official Website of this Eye Care Supplement
There are tons of things to see on their website, and this Vision 20 review just summarized it for you so that you will not have the hassle of going through all those marketing stunts.
How Much Does It Cost Vision 20?
Vision 20 is relatively cheap for an optical dietary supplement of its degree! Typically, each bottle costs a whopping price of $79! This is a shocker, but it is a great supplement to begin with.
However, they are generous enough to give people a discount! Right now, each bottle of Vision 20 only costs $49! That is $30 off than the regular price.
If you feel that $49 is still too much, they also offer 3-bottle and 6-bottle packages worth $117 and $198, respectively. These are super low prices compared to other dietary supplements in the market!
However, shipping is relatively high, at $19.95. If you go for the 6-bottle pack, though, you can have free shipping, so that is cool in its regard. Each purchase of Vision 20 helps a charity named Vitamin Angels, which helps kids overcome their vitamin deficiencies.
Overall Verdict for Vision 20
Vision 20 is one of the best dietary supplements to take if you look for something to make your eyesight better overtime. The blend of the ingredients is outstanding, and it can make your quality of life much better as you get older.
Nevertheless, it is still a dietary supplement and should be taken with a healthy and balanced diet to be fully utilized. Always consult your physician and listen to the professional advice of your doctor. Other than that, always remain vigilant and check the labels first before taking a supplement like this!

Stopping that procedure at any type of age refers training and also determination.
In 2007 Norman Doidge, M.D. published his innovation publication, The Mind That Modifications Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Mind Science. Attracting from the most recent neuroscientific research study, Doidge released various accounts of individuals with "hopeless" mind conditions, injuries as well as ailments who were able to rewire their minds through targeted brain exercises. His accounts give strong proof that the when held belief that the adult brain is hardwired, dealt with, and also changeless is simply not true.

A group led by Torkel Klingberg at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, found that the neural systems connected to functioning memory modification in feedback to training. They determined brain activity in a sample of grownups before and after 5 weeks of working-memory training that included memorizing the positions of a series of dots on a grid, as well as other tasks.

He competes that, "stress and anxiety has damaging results on memory and cognition that can result in long-term dysfunction." However stress and anxiety could be taken care of. Researchers have uncovered that people that take part in tasks such as yoga, meditation, and Tai-Chi that highlight conscious understanding record decreases in stress and also renovations in mood and other steps of psychological health. Even short practices could have long lasting effects if exercised consistently.
4. Exercise your internal kid: Discover a new skill: Mind training does not have to be painful, arduous, or boring. Inning accordance with Norman Doidge, grabbing a new music instrument, learning a language, or trying a new pastime could be similarly as efficient in boosting brain cell development as well as boosting psychological functioning.
Depending on the activity, adults learning a brand-new ability might experience renovations in memory, electric motor abilities, hand-eye control, etymological and also spatial memory, and also lots of other abilities connected to healthy and balanced mind function. Researches likewise suggest that pleasant activities are connected with the launch of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a vital duty in cognition, inspiration, motor control, as well as other crucial functions. It does not matter what you do as long as you enjoy the activity and do it consistently.
5. The power of an excellent evening's sleep: It is not surprising that individuals feel psychologically clouded after a bad evening's sleep. Rest is important for effective knowing, focus, working memory, problem resolving, and focus. 'If you have actually been awake for 21 hrs straight, your abilities are equivalent to someone who is legally intoxicated,' says Sean Drummond from the University of California, San Diego.
Fortunately, the impacts of a poor night's sleep could be treated by a snooze or a good evening of sleep. For those dealing with persistent sleep problems, the solution might call for a change in sleep health. For a better evening's sleep, turn off the computer, cell phone, or other light creating devices 1-2 hrs prior to going to bed. Restriction using alcohol, high levels of caffeine or various other stimulants, specifically in the evening hrs. Trade in your TELEVISION police procedural for a good publication, a mug of organic tea, or a quick yoga or reflection technique. Facts Behind The Top Foods Associated To Fight Cancer Risk .
Tumblr media
The innumerable books and news articles about malignant growth battling nourishments may lead you to figure you can avert this feared ailment essentially by eating better. Too bad, it isn't so straight forward. Whenever you see a feature expressing "Fix disease normally," you should run; Running, truth be told, will be more useful to your well-being than whatever that news article is pushing. There are sustenances related with a lower danger of getting a disease. While that is sure news, recall this depends simply on what goes on in Petri dishes and in mice and in human the study of disease transmission contemplates uncovering, to a great extent all things considered, that individuals who ate A, B and C for "x" years had a y-percent decrease in a malignancy chance contrasted and a bundle of bums who did nothing to remain sound. Along these lines, there are no assurances. Think about that among the main defenders of the macrobiotic eating routine — the grain-and vegetable-based eating regimen indicated to fix disease — Aveline Kushi and her little girl Lilly kicked the bucket of malignant growth, Michio Kushi had a tumor expelled from his digestive tract, and author George Ohsawa passed on at the moderately youthful age of 73, likely of a heart assault. Numerous reasons for malignancy are natural, to a great extent from tobacco, inordinate sun introduction, and working environment risks, for example, compound solvents and exhaust. Shirking is the best anticipation system here. Besides that, on the off chance that you need the chances on your side, the sustenances in this rundown do appear to convey some disease insurance properties. Wine
Tumblr media
Wine — and, specifically, red wine with its high convergence of the synthetic resveratrol from the grape skin — is against malignant growth and expert heart, in any event with some restraint. Liquor can be harmful and is related to liver, bosom and stomach malignancies. Someplace there is parity, however, with resveratrol contributing in some obscure manner to stifle metabolites related with malignant growth development. An ever-increasing number of analysts have turned out to be agreeable lately in suggesting a glass of wine multi-day to avoid disease and advance a more beneficial circulatory framework. In the event that the idea of wine appears to be too radical to even consider including on a rundown of against disease nourishments, consider having that wine with an Italian pasta supper with tomato sauce (high in lycopene, to some degree related with malignant growth counteractive action), sardines and a dull verdant green serving of mixed greens (high on the counter malignant growth sustenance list).
Tumblr media
Cruciferous Vegetables Cruciferous vegetables are those in the mustard or cabbage family, and the rundown is comprehensive. Sadly, generally, U.S. advertises just convey a couple: cabbage, broccoli, kale, and collards. Venture into a decent Asian market for a whole passageway of contributions. These vegetables, in shifting degrees, are wealthy in hostile to malignant growth properties, for example, diindolylmethane, sulforaphane, and the component selenium. The punch accompanies the crunch: Chewing, more so than consequent absorption, discharges these synthetic compounds. In this way, it is imperative not to overcook these greens. Indeed, even intense collards, assuming new, can be cleaved dainty and seared shortly, instead of the conventional southern strategies for heating up the hellfire out of these.
Tumblr media
Green Tea Begin drinking up to a half-gallon of green tea daily, cold or hot, caffeine be condemned. (Tea just has 33% of the caffeine found in most espresso.) Green tea has epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and catechins, as extreme on malignancy cells as they are on the tongue to articulate. EGCG hinders malignant growth development, and stomach and lung disease rates in Japan would almost certainly be much higher considering all the disease advancing salty nourishment and tobacco there. Note that in the United States it is very hard to get genuine green tea. What you are purchasing is green tea drink (sugar, water, and somebody murmuring the words "green tea" over the jug) or green tea blend (a mix of teas to facilitate that normal sharpness of green tea). The most intense green tea originates from Japan; and Asian grocery stores convey numerous assortments, with the best brands being in boxes with letters you can't peruse. Note likewise that dark teas lose solid catechins in the maturation procedure, and decaffeinated teas lose catechins in the washing procedure.
Tumblr media
Vitamin D Nutrient D isn't nourishment essentially; it is a proto-hormone that appears to meddle with disease development. Numerous investigations on people have indicated nutrient D is instrumental in decreasing the danger of colon and bosom malignant growth and improving the survival rates of lung disease. The exact system isn't known, yet most analysts as of late have turned out to be progressively persuaded that few of us get enough nutrient D through daylight or diet. There are not many vegan sources other than eggs and UV-lighted mushrooms. Your most logical option originates from the conduits: catfish, salmon, sardines, or mackerel.
Tumblr media
Folate Folate, and the related folic corrosive or nutrient B9 is a piece of the nutrient B-complex family, which all in all has malignancy preventive properties. The malignant growth folate relationship is unpredictable. Individuals with weight control plans low in folate appear to have higher rates of malignant growth. Diets high in folate don't really counteract malignancy, yet they don't appear to hurt. The absence of folate may empower disease to get the high ground, enabling changes to happen unchecked. Verdant green vegetables, asparagus, beans, peas, and lentils are on the whole commonly high in folate.
Tumblr media
Dark Green Vegetables This class of vegetables covers the cruciferous family and incorporates chard, spinach, and beets (by the excellence of the leaves, yet the red root is sound, as well). These vegetables contain, among different treats, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin — every one of which is incredible cell reinforcements that can square early malignant growth improvement. They are additionally high in folate. Best yet, Swiss chard specifically is incredibly simple to develop in pots. The plant continues giving: You can cut off leaves for a considerable length of time upon months as new ones keep shooting up. Fresher greens are increasingly delicate and more delicious.
Tumblr media
Ginger and Turmeric Ginger and turmeric are about as close as you can get to great tasting prescription. Ginger has amazing calming properties and can moderate disease development. Turmeric, the zest that shapes the base of most curries, is from a root in the ginger family. The dynamic fixing is curcumin, which can execute malignancy cells rapidly, yet in a test tube. Ginger and turmeric improve the kind of most any dinner and accompany an extensive rundown of fortifying advantages. Truly, you can get both ginger and turmeric/curcumin in a pill structure. Yet, pill supplements are normally idiotic American thoughts. Add these to your flavor rack, not prescription bureau.
Tumblr media
Beans and Lentils Include the previously mentioned ginger or turmeric or both, and you're in for some great, smart dieting. Beans and lentils contain various phytochemicals, extremely bulky to peruse in one sitting, that have been appeared in the research facility to ease back or counteract harm to the DNA, the premise of malignancy. The additional advantage accompanies the fiber, related to a lower danger of stomach related diseases, for example, colon malignancy. The precarious part, for some, Americans, is figuring out how to cook these appropriately. Make companions with somebody from India who can cook, and you'll be astounded how you can overcome quite a bit of your week without hamburger or pork.
Tumblr media
Chocolate Chocolate has persevered through incalculable investigations by researchers resolved to demonstrate this can't in any way, shape or form be sound. Be that as it may, it is sound, given the cocoa-to-treat proportion stays high. Reach for a dull chocolate bar with no less than 70-percent cocoa (frequently spelled cacao), ideally more. The closer to its severe bean express, the better. Once again we see those cancer prevention agents and helpful polyphenols at work. Specifically, there is a class of synthetic compounds in cocoa called catechins, likewise found in tea, that appear to offer insurance against coronary illness, stroke and malignant growth, as per investigations of South Americans who expend the cocoa bean liberally.
Tumblr media
Berries Pretty much any nourishment with word "berry" in it is very sound, with the essential special case being Cap'n's Crunch Berries. Most berries contain ellagic corrosive and other polyphenol cancer prevention agents that restrain tumor development. Try not to get excessively made up for a lost time in one sort of berry and the "best" polyphenol with a name you can't articulate. Concentrate on an assortment of occasional berries and add them to plain, no-fat yogurt.
Tumblr media
Scrumptious Smoothie Take a stab at blending a large portion of the things referenced in this enemy of disease nourishment list into a smoothie with non-fat yogurt or luxurious tofu. You'll be astonished the measure of solid garbage you can pack into a smoothie — flaxseed, wheat germ, and considerably unpleasant vegetables — and still think of something delectable as long as you incorporate berries, kiwis, bananas, stripped carrots or any blend thereof. “The Supplement Industry Is Barely Regulated And It's Endangering Actual Lives...
The baby, a healthy girl with mocha-pink skin and a powerful set of lungs, was being quarantined.
In the middle of the pregnancy, her mother had come down with tuberculosis. She'd contracted the contagious lung infection in her teens, and the illness came back despite preventative antibiotics and regular screenings. The cause: a popular herbal supplement called St. John's wort.
"The trouble is most people don't consider it a medication because you don't need a prescription for it, and so she didn't tell us," Jamshidi told Business Insider.
St. John's wort is one of the most popular herbal supplements sold in the United States. But in 2000, the National Institutes of Health published a study showing that St. John's wort could severely curb the effectiveness of several important pharmaceutical drugs - including antibiotics, birth control, and antiretrovirals for infections like HIV - by speeding up their breakdown in the body.
"It basically overmetabolised the antibiotics so they weren't in her system in the correct dose," Jamshidi said.
The findings on St. John's wort prompted the US Food and Drug Administration to warn doctors about the herbal remedy. But that did little to stem public sale or consumption of it.
Over the past two decades, US poison-control centers have gotten about 275,000 reports - roughly one every 24 minutes - of people who reacted badly to supplements; a third of them were about herbal remedies like St. John's wort.
The FDA defines supplements as products "intended to add further nutritional value to (supplement) the diet". They aren't regulated as drugs - only when a supplement is shown to cause significant harm is it called out as unsafe.
Half of all adult participants in a survey in the mid-2000s said they took at least one supplement every day - almost the same percentage of Americans who took them two decades ago.
Yet research has consistently found the pills and powders to be ineffective and sometimes dangerous.
"Consumers should expect nothing from [supplements] because we don't have any clear evidence that they're beneficial, and they should be leery that they could be putting themselves at risk," S. Bryn Austin, a professor of behavioral sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told Business Insider.
"Whether it's on the bottle or not, there can be ingredients in there that can do harm."
Despite many such warnings, the supplement industry's market is as much as US$37 billion a year, according to one estimate.
Using data from 2004 to 2013, the authors of a 2016 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine estimated that 23,005 emergency-room visits a year were linked to supplements.
Between 2000 and 2012, the annual rate of negative reactions to supplements - or "exposures" as they are known in scientific parlance - rose from 3.5 to 9.3 cases per 100,000 people, a 166 percent increase.
Over that period, 34 people died as a result of using supplements, according to a 2017 study published in the Journal of Medical Toxicology.
Six of the deaths resulted from ephedra, the once popular weight-loss supplement banned by the FDA in 2004, and three people died from homeopathic remedies.
One person died after using yohimbe, an herbal supplement used for weight loss and erectile dysfunction.
Jamshidi said he used to take a daily multivitamin and had even tried an herbal formulation now and again when he was feeling tired or unwell.
But he remembers the moment he became wary of supplements: when the pregnant woman his team was monitoring began coughing up phlegm.
"She had been an incredibly cooperative patient, super engaged and always showing up on time for her visits, taking all of our instructions carefully - just a really good patient," Jamshidi said.
In his opinion, one of the reasons many people end up in emergency rooms after taking supplements is that the quantities of active ingredients in them can vary dramatically.
A 2013 study published in the journal BMC Medicine found that doses of ingredients in supplements could even vary from pill to pill - which poses a significant hurdle for doctors trying to treat a negative reaction.
"There are other medications that can have side effects, but patients come in and tell you the dose, and you can reverse it," Jamshidi said. "But with supplements, you don't know what you're dealing with."
According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin B6 is "likely safe" in the recommended daily intake amount: 1.3 milligrams for people ages 19-50. But taking too much of the supplement has been linked with abnormal heart rhythms, decreased muscle tone, and worsened asthma.
High doses of B6 can also cause drops in blood pressure, the Mayo Clinic notes, and can interact with drugs like Advil, Motrin, and those prescribed for anxiety and Alzheimer's.
"People using any medications should check the package insert and speak with a qualified healthcare professional, including a pharmacist, about possible interactions," the Mayo Clinic's website says.
No matter how colorful their packaging or messaging, all these supplements fall prey to the same problem: We simply do not need them to be healthy.
"We use vitamins as insurance policies against whatever else we might (or might not) be eating, as if by atoning for our other nutritional sins, vitamins can save us from ourselves," Catherine Price, a science reporter, writes in the book Vitamania.
A large recent review published in the Annals of Internal Medicine looked at 27 trials of vitamins involving more than 400,000 people.
The researchers concluded that people who took vitamins did not live longer or have fewer cases of heart disease or cancer than people who did not take them.
Another long-term study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in May divided nearly 6,000 men into groups and gave them either a placebo or one of four supplements touted for their brain-protecting abilities.
The results showed no decreased prevalence of dementia among any of the supplement-taking groups.
Study after study has also found that many popular supplements can cause harm. A large, long-term study of male smokers found that those who regularly took vitamin A were more likely to get lung cancer than those who didn't.
And a 2007 review of trials of several types of antioxidant supplements put it this way: "Treatment with beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E may increase mortality."
Risks aside, research has suggested that our bodies are better equipped to process the vitamins and minerals in whole foods than those in pills.
When we bite into a juicy peach or a crunchy Brussels sprout, we're ingesting dozens of nutrients, including phytochemicals like isothiocyanates, as well as carotenoids.
Austin said that's why "nutritionists recommend people get their nutrition from whole foods, not things that have been packaged and put into a box."
Virtually any registered dietitian, physician, or public health expert is likely to reiterate the advice health professionals have been giving for decades: Eat real food, like fruits and veggies, in moderation, and stay away from processed foods and sugary beverages.
Or, in the words of the journalist and food writer Michael Pollan: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."
Ask Steven Tave, the director of the office of dietary supplement programs at the FDA, why the agency isn't stopping more similar situations, and he'll give a simple answer: "We're doing the best we can."
In 1994, Congress passed a controversial law called the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act.
Tave said that before DSHEA passed, the FDA was starting to regulate supplements more stringently, the way it does pharmaceutical drugs, but getting "pushback from the industry." The law forced the agency to be more lenient.
Before a new drug can be sold, the company making it has to apply for FDA approval, and the agency has to conclude that the drug is safe and does what it claims to do.
"So if the drug says, you know, 'used to treat cancer,' then the agency's reviewers are going to look at it and make a determination that there's evidence that it does treat cancer," Tave said.
New supplements don't face any burden of proof. The agency can review products that add new dietary ingredients when it gets a notification, Tave said, but it doesn't "have the authority to stop anything from going to market".
When DSHEA was passed, Tave said, the bill still made sense.
In 1994, about 600 supplement companies were producing about 4,000 products for a total revenue of about US$4 billion. But that market has since ballooned - today, close to 6,000 companies pump out about 75,000 products.
"We're regulating that with 26 people and a budget of US$5 million," Tave said.
Most unsafe supplements have been found to contain ingredients that aren't listed on their labels - usually, these are pharmaceutical drugs, some of which have been banned by the FDA.
A study of product recalls published in 2013 in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that of the 274 supplements recalled by the FDA between 2009 and 2012, all contained banned drugs.
A 2014 report found that more than two-thirds of the supplements purchased six months after being recalled still contained banned drugs.
"The products we see today have gone way beyond that sort of core group that they were in 1994," Tave said.
"Now they're promoted for all sorts of things - some are long term, some are short term, some are chemicals no one's ever seen before. It's a much different universe than it was at the time."
Austin says three categories of supplements are the "most lawless of the industry": physical enhancement, weight loss, and sexual performance.
"Some of these companies won't identify ingredients that they purposefully put in the products," she said. "Some weight-loss drugs, for example, that have been pulled from the market - we can still find these in the bottle even though they don't put it on the label."
Dangerous supplements continue to seep through the cracks, however.
In 2016, the world's largest supplement maker, GNC Holdings Inc., agreed to pay US$2.25 million to avoid federal prosecution over allegations that it sold a performance-enhancing supplement that claimed to increase speed, strength, and endurance with an active ingredient called dimethylamylamine, or DMAA.
Two soldiers who used the supplement died in 2011, which prompted the Defence Department to remove all products containing DMAA from stores on military bases.
A recent indictment against USPlabs, the Texas-based company that made the supplement, accused it of falsely claiming the product was made of natural plant extracts when it really contained synthetic stimulants made in China.
Earlier this year, the FDA recalled several supplements after they were found to contain unapproved new drugs, and two more were recalled after they were found to contain unlisted anabolic steroids.
In just the past week, the FDA recalled certain supplements and liquid drugs manufactured by a company called PharmaTech because of contamination.
"Consumers have no way to know that what's in the label is what's actually in the bottle or box," Austin said. "There are many dubious companies out there that are willing to take a risk with consumers health and their lives."”

Sometimes you’ve just gotta get away from it all. Living in the city, you get used to the noise, the crowds, and the traffic. As much as I love cities, it’s a good idea to take a break from them, too. Well, if you live in and you’re looking for a road trip from Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, or any other city, I’ve got a plan for you. Head straight to Perth County, for a peaceful getaway where you certainly won’t have to deal with noise, crowds, or traffic.
Where is Perth County? A Perth County Map
Not to be confused with the town of Perth, , Perth County is a large land mass just west of Kitchener, Cambridge, and Guelph. It’s also north of Woodstock and London. If you’re planning a road trip from Toronto, Perth County is about 1 hour 30 minutes or 2 hours from the city, depending on where you’re headed.
Tumblr media
Perth County has four townships or municipalities within it: North Perth, Perth East, Perth South, and West Perth. In this article, I’ll organize these places to visit in for the weekend under these four geographical categories to make your trip planning a little easier. Here’s a map to not only show you where Perth County is located, but also to provide the details of every stop I made on my trip.
Perth County: Perth East
At the heart of Perth East lies the village of Shakespeare, known as Perth County’s antique capital. While you’ll definitely want to hit up the shops in town, there are also opportunities to sample local produce, pints, and pristine nature.
Shakespeare Brewing Company
Tumblr media
Who loves visiting local craft breweries? The village of Shakespeare is home to Shakespeare Brewing Company, owned by husband and wife team, Ayden and Katie. On their travels through Europe, the couple stayed at an old English farm with a microbrewery where Ayden learned how to brew beer. Before long, they started Shakespeare Brewing and the rest is history!
Tumblr media
Staying true to the region, their beer is brewed with locally grown ingredients like barley and 100% grown hops. Shakespeare Brewing supports local agriculture, farmers, and small businesses, taking the concept of “locally made” to the next level.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keeping with the Shakespearean theme, their craft beers are all named for animals and feature those animals wearing Olde English attire. The art on each tall boy can is quite visually stunning. While you should definitely take some cans home with you, I recommend sampling some freshly brewed beer on site. Ordering a flight is a great way to try a few beers to discover your favorites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried the Reckless Rooster (an Pale Ale with a citrus hop aroma), the Bumbling Bear (a blueberry wheat beer) and a special one only available on tap, the Strawberry Vanilla beer. Ayden is always crafting new varieties, so there will always be rotating flavors to try every time you visit. My favorite of the three was the Bumbling Bear because I’m definitely a sucker for the fruity wheat beers.
Tumblr media
Exploring the Village of Shakespeare
Tumblr media
Though the village of Shakespeare is pretty small, it’s one of my new favorite places to go in . Its packed with unique shops with intriguing gifts and things for many interests. A stop in Shakespeare is worth the road trip from Toronto. Its main street has several diverse shops with a main focus on antiques. You can easily spend a couple of hours here browsing the shelves of enticing finds. Here are a few of the best shops in Shakespeare.
Harry Ten Shilling
Harry Ten Shilling is an adorable tea shop in the heart of Shakespeare. If you aren’t able to stay for afternoon tea, browse this store with several Instagrammable rooms and displays featuring local handicrafts, bath and body products, jewelry, gifts and more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The British Touch
The British Touch features all things British, whether you’re seeking your gifts, tea, or your favorite grocery items that are only found in the UK. As we had recently visited Scotland this past year, I had a craving for some Irn Bru and couldn’t resist picking up a few cans of it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Land and Ross Antiques
Land and Ross Antiques is packed with high quality antiques and treasures. They also specialize in custom furniture design and restoration. You’ll find many classic and rare items over a century old that will surely add a special flair to your home. Make sure to say hello to their adorable dog, too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Quilt Place
Are you into quilting or sewing? You won’t want to miss stopping by The Quilt Place! They have reams upon reams of fabric for every project, as well as hundreds of quilting books and patterns. Take a peek upstairs to see a few bedrooms adorned with beautiful quilts for extra inspiration. When making the road trip from Toronto to Perth County and Shakespeare, I’m certain that many quilting enthusiasts make an extra trip here as I haven’t seen a store quite like this one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shakespeare Conservation Area
After browsing the shops of Shakespeare, drive a minute up the road to the Shakespeare Conservation Area to soak up the sights and sounds of glorious nature. The Shakespeare Pond is a great spot for a picnic beneath its shaded pavilion or at a picnic table beside the water.
Tumblr media
Then, take a stroll around the pond to go bird watching, get some exercise, or to simply snap a few photos. I managed to meet a couple of locals who were also having a picnic lunch. It was wonderful to engage in a great chat with them. After making the road trip from Toronto to the country, I thoroughly enjoyed this laid back approach to the day by taking stroll at the pond and leisurely chatting to area residents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TIP: Be sure to bring your sunscreen and your bug repellent while going for a walk at the Shakespeare Conservation Area. It’s always a good idea to protect your skin from the sun and the bugs. Don’t forget to bring your refillable water bottle!
TNT Berries
TNT Berries is a sea buckthorn and blueberry farm where you’ll find the freshest and tastiest berries. They have a blueberry farm where you can pick your own berries when they’re in season (generally around mid-July to August). The blueberries were only starting to come into season when I visited. They tasted amazing right off the vine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Have you heard of sea buckthorn berries? They’re tasty little berries that are a little bit tart. They have high levels of vitamin C, antioxidants, 18 amino acids, omega 3-6-9 and 7, beta carotene, and over 190 phytonutrients! You can add them to smoothies, jams and jellies, or even as an extra flavor in your water bottle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I visited TNT Berries, the sea buckthorn berries were still green. When ripe, they turn a beautiful shade of orange. I recommend that you purchase some frozen berries from Nadia as they’re quite delicious when consumed frozen. When making the road trip from Toronto to the rural communities of Perth County, you’ll want to visit their farm gates and farm shops to sample farm fresh produce.
Tumblr media
Organic Oasis
Organic Oasis is an organic farm and farm store, selling unique and locally produced goods. Owners Jessie and Adam Young come from a long line of farmers, and they continue to explore innovative farming methods for better yields. I went on a guided tour of the farm, including soaking up the breathtaking views from “Happy Hog Lookout.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the farm has animals like pigs and chickens, my main interest lies in their fruits and veggies, as I don’t consume animal products. They have large patches of land for fruits and vegetables in the summer, as well as large greenhouses to extend the growing season. There’s even flower gardens and spaces to encourage Monarch butterflies to survive and thrive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Organic Oasis farm store features locally grown produce straight from their farm, and it’s all 100% organic. You’ll notice signs and labels denoting the products and produce grown on site. There are a few things like avocados and citrus that can’t be grown in ; for the most part, everything comes directly from their farm or nearby local farms.

Where to Eat: Dave’s Diner in Sebringville
Dave’s Diner in Sebringville is a favorite restaurant among locals. I found a couple of items on the menu that were vegan and completely contrasted one another: a healthy garden salad and a big plate of French fries. It’s good to have a little bit of both healthy and not so healthy, right?
Tumblr media
Regardless of what you order, you need to try their fries. They’re definitely some of the most delicious fries I’ve ever had! After chatting briefly with Dave, I discovered that he has a secret blend of spices that make those fries extra special. I asked if he could share his secret recipe with me, but he’s definitely keeping this one under wraps. You’ll have to head to Dave’s Diner to sample the fries and let me know what you think!
Tumblr media
Perth County: North Perth
It’s time to swing up to North Perth for a taste of rural living in Perth County . North Perth has plenty of locally owned businesses in town, as well as a vibrant sense of community. Whether you take a stroll through town or take part in a local festival, you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds as urban meets rural. When making the road trip from Toronto or other nearby cities to Perth County, Listowel is a fantastic destination for exploring a town steeped in rural traditions.
Goats on 86
Tumblr media
Goats on 86. This one is wildly popular with anyone traveling through the area. Just search for the hashtag and you’ll see what I mean!
Goats on 86 allows a local family to share their love for their pet goats and alpacas with the community. The animals live in a very large yard by their home. You’re welcome to pay the goats and alpacas a visit anytime you like. There are dispensers with corn if you’d like to feed them; make sure you don’t feed them anything but this corn. Though you have to pay a small fee for the corn, the family donates that money to a local charity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yarn Factory Outlet store for all the knitters and crocheters in the crowd. As you walk away from the Yarn Factory Outlet shop, you’ll see a couple of walls with spectacular street art / murals to admire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I visited Listowel, it was right in time for the 163rd Listowel Agricultural Fair. There was a tractor parade rolling through town, a classic midway, and an agricultural hall with various ribbons assigned to talented members of the community. I wandered through the fair for a slice of country living. It was also super cute to overhear some local children discovering that they won a prize for an art or craft project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where to Eat: Cowan’s Community Fresh
Cowan’s Community Fresh in Listowel is an independent, small business focusing on local and organic whole foods. They support local farmers, growers and producers in Perth County and . This small grocery store is very vegan-friendly with many vegan grocery and pantry items. There’s always a vegan prepared salad or meal available on hand. I highly recommend trying the avocado salad, which comes with a side of cashew cheese as a topping. Yum!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perth County: Perth South
Perth South has an assortment of activities and attractions. Looking for something sporty? Head to River Valley Golf (which also doubles as a snow tubing attraction in the winter). Looking for history and culture? The Stratford Perth Museum has rotating exhibits highlighting local celebrities and lifestyle. And there’s lots of locally produced food in this farming region, of course. If you’re thinking about southwestern day trips or weekend getaways, don’t miss these spots in Perth South.
McCully’s Hill Farm
Tumblr media
McCully’s Hill Farm is a farm shop that I really wish that I had closer to home. They specialize in homemade preserves, maple products, baked goods, prepared meals, and garden fresh produce. I was thrilled to see a vast assortment of pickles, flavors of relish, unique types of jam, fresh salsa, maple mustard, and many more drool-worthy products.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After chatting with the owner, Dennis, I could see his passion for his market fresh farm operation, as well as creating innovative products for those living in the region. In addition to the farm and farm shop, McCully’s operates school tours for children, a fall harvest festival, and a maple syrup festival in the winter. It seems as though there’s always something fun and entertaining happening at McCully’s! It’s definitely one of my top picks for foodie places to visit in southern , especially if you’re planning a trip to Perth County.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Stratford Perth Museum
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at the Stratford Perth Museum. As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed that the museum was situated inside a historic home with a massive extension attached to it. What treasures would I find inside the Stratford Perth Museum? As it turns out, this museum has a slice of local life that suits many interests and tastes, including music, the arts, local history, oddities, war history, and so much more.
Tumblr media
What makes the Stratford Perth Museum so intriguing? Their exhibits are continually rotating so the museum always stays fresh. You can visit year after year, enjoying entirely new exhibitions. There’s really so much that Perth County has to offer, and the Stratford Perth Museum emphasizes new details and aspects of that local history time and time again. For instance, there are ongoing exhibits illustrating Stratford’s Shakespearean Festival, including artifacts, props and costumes. The region’s railway history and glimpses into Perth County from the early 1800s are also prominently featured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, Perth County is a very important place in terms of Canadian music history. Did you know that three prominent Canadian musicians from Stratford and Perth County performed at the Woodstock festival? This exhibit includes personal stories and memorabilia from one of the most memorable and important music festivals in history.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there’s the exhibit that has drawn thousands upon thousands of visitors to the Stratford Perth Museum from all over the world. Justin Bieber: Steps to Stardom highlights Bieber’s humble beginnings, busking on the steps of the local Avon Theater through his rise to fame. There are hundreds of items, many donated from Justin Bieber’s family or the Biebs himself, including awards, drum sets, clothing, shoes, and even library cards. And in case you were wondering, there are even opportunities for selfies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where to Eat: River Valley Golf
By summer, it’s a beautiful golf course. By winter, it’s a snow tubing adventure park. River Valley Golf certainly has all four seasons covered for fun things to do in Perth County. Even if you aren’t partaking in a round of golf, their restaurant has a great selection of appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches. I ordered a veggie burger with a side of fries that was super yummy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perth County: West Perth
Tumblr media
In West Perth, I explored the town of Mitchell. It’s home to a bustling historic downtown with many shopping options, as well as natural attractions with many parks, trails, and wetlands. If you’re taking a road trip from Toronto and you love adorable towns, you won’t want to miss a stop in Mitchell.
Shop at Jillian’s
Tumblr media
Jillian’s is an absolute gem of a home decor store in Perth County. People travel from all over to shop at this boutique, and I can see why they come from far and wide. Jillian’s is such a beautiful store with home furnishings and decorations that I haven’t seen anywhere else. They have dozens of various displays featuring their one of a kind items to suit all styles. From colorful cushions to artsy pots and planters, you’ll be sure to find that special something that would look right at home in your home. It’s one of the best places to go in for home decor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
West Perth Wetlands
Tumblr media
After you take a little walk around downtown Mitchell, make your way to the West Perth Wetlands, also in Mitchell. These 65 acres are a total paradise for nature lovers, including hikers, walkers, photographers, and bird watchers. There are 3 rehabilitated ponds, 10km of walking trails, and over 4700 different kinds of plants. A portion of the trails are accessible for wheelchairs, scooters, and baby strollers, while other sections are a little bit more rugged. When you enter the wetlands from the parking lot, there’s a fabulous wooden viewing platform where you can soak up the beautiful surroundings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most importantly, this is a natural habitat for many species of bird species and wildlife. You can find over 200 different species of breeding and migratory birds at the West Perth Wetlands. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot some of them! The stunning nature in Perth County is totally worth the road trip from Toronto, Hamilton, and other cities.
Where to Stay in Perth County
Tumblr media
My top pick for where to stay in Perth County is the Forest Motel, just outside of Stratford. I had an incredible two nights’ stay. This motel is a destination in itself for its natural surroundings and amenities alone. It’s the best place to stay when you’re taking a road trip from Toronto to Perth County for the weekend, a few days, or longer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the Forest Motel, you’ll stay in a warm and cozy private room with an en suite bathroom, flat screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, fridge, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker. Breakfast is complimentary each morning, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyone who stays at the Forest Motel receives free access to the property and its activities, including 32 acres of forest and trails, a private lake with canoeing and kayaking (I even saw a blue heron while kayaking!), lakeside bonfires, BBQ grills, and snowshoeing in the winter. The staff are lovely and very welcoming, and you might also be welcomed by the resident swan family, too! If you’d like to meet the swans, they waddle up around 5:00pm each day for their dinner, and I was lucky enough to arrive just as they were quacking for their meal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Be sure to book your stay at the Forest Motel for amazing service, a comfortable stay, and to take advantage of the complimentary outdoor adventures. I chatted with guests who return to this accommodation year after year for one of the best southern getaways. If you’re looking for places to visit in for the weekend, plan your trip to Perth County and be sure to stay at the Forest Motel. Be sure to read more reviews by fellow travelers.

Limiting adjectives RESTRICT nouns rather than DESCRIBING them. They can point out a specific object (the cat, this house, my car) or set a numerical limit to it (two dogs, the third book). This, some and first are all examples of limiting adjectives. In this guide, we'll discover what limiting adjectives are, what types of limiting adjectives exist, and how to use them. We'll provide a lot of examples and exercises. Read on!
What is a Limiting Adjective?
Collins English Dictionary defines a limiting adjective as "one of a small group of adjectives that modify the nouns to which they are applied by restricting rather than describing or qualifying."
Descriptive Adjectives and Limiting Adjectives: What is the Difference?
How to tell whether an adjective is descriptive or limiting? They both modify a noun or a pronoun but still there’s some difference. Descriptive adjectives - as their name implies - describe places, people and things relating to their color, size, shape, and the like. They add meaning to the noun or pronoun that they modify and come right before it. For instance, in the phrase “a new car" the word “new” is a descriptive adjective as it defines the noun “car” and describes its age or state. Some more examples: The fat boy teased the small kids in the park. ‘Fat’ is a descriptive adjective, it modifies the noun ‘boy’; ‘small’ is a descriptive adjective, it modifies the noun ‘kids’, both of them relate to size. The attractive guy fell off his black horse. ‘Attractive’ is a descriptive adjective, it modifies the noun ‘guy’, it relates to appearance; ‘black’ is a descriptive adjective, it modifies the noun ‘horse’, it relates to color. I think he’s pretty short for his age. ‘Short’ is a descriptive adjective, it modifies the pronoun ‘he’; it relates to height. In a sentence, more than one descriptive adjective can modify the same noun. Look at the following example: Green leafy vegetables contain minerals and vitamins. ‘Green’ and ‘leafy’ are adjectives that refer to color and shape and describe the noun ‘vegetables’. Bright orange vegetables contain beta-carotene. ‘Bright’ and ‘orange’ are adjectives that refer to color and describe the noun ‘vegetables’. Limiting adjectives, or determining adjectives (often classified as determiners), limit the meaning of nouns or pronouns they modify. They tell "which one," "how much," "how many," or "whose." For example, notice how the limiting adjective ‘four’ in the following sentence restricts the meaning of the noun ‘women’. Four women were talking in the street. The word ‘four’ is a limiting adjective as it limits the noun ‘women’ to definite numbers. The tiny kitten chased two mice into the barn. Since we're talking about a specific kitten here, we use the definite article ‘the’ and restrict the meaning of the noun ‘mice’ with the word ‘two’ - only two mice. Consider different meanings of limiting adjectives: WHICH ONE? I liked that haircut. ‘That’ is a limiting adjective at is restricts the noun ‘haircut’ meaning a particular haircut and not any haircut in general. You should read this lesson. ‘This’ is a limiting adjective at is restricts the noun ‘lesson’ meaning a particular lesson. HOW MUCH/MANY? The three boys in the car are my brothers. ‘Three’ is a limiting adjective which refers to number and modifies the noun ‘boys’. There was little sugar left in the pot. ‘Little’ is a limiting adjective meaning ‘not much’. WHOSE? I forgot my hat at home. The speaker restricts the meaning to his own hat. Did you see Meg’s book? The speaker means the particular book that belongs to Meg.
8 Types of Limiting Adjectives
As you have already seen, different parts of speech can act as limiting adjectives. There are eight types of limiting adjectives:
Tumblr media
Types of Limiting Adjectives - GrammarTOP.com Don’t worry, we’ll outline them all below. Articles as Limiting Adjectives To restrict the meaning of a noun, we can use articles. They are the most commonly used limiting adjectives, and, besides, they are the shortest. ‘The’ is called a definite article because it points out nouns more specifically. Consider the following examples: The boys and girls ate huge pieces of cake. Here, we talk about particular boys and girls. Although we mention them for the first time, we know who we’re talking about. My father enjoyed the book you gave him. We use ‘the’ to define or identify a particular person or object. “A” and “an” are called indefinite articles because they refer to non-specific nouns. We use them when we talk about any one person, place, thing or idea. Use “a” before consonant sounds: a bag, a cup, a uniform. Use “an” before vowel sounds: an apple, an excuse. Consider the examples: I wish I had an umbrella. Since we're not talking about a specific umbrella here, we use the indefinite article ‘a.’ There's a position available in my team. The job will involve some international travel. In the first sentence, we're talking about a position in general and we use the indefinite article ‘a.’ When the position (or the job) is referred to a second time, we use the definite article ‘the’ because we're referring to the individual position that has already been mentioned. Let's summarize: we use ‘the’ when you want to refer to a specific thing. And we use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when you don't need to identify a particular item. Possessive Limiting Adjectives The possessive adjectives, as their name implies, modify nouns by showing possession or ownership. The possessive adjectives are: my, your, his, her, its, our, and their. They answer the question ‘WHOSE?’ For example: Was your grammar book expensive? In this example, the possessive adjective 'your' modifies the noun 'book' to specify whose book it is. We sold our dune buggy yesterday. Here, we use the possessive adjective 'our' to show that the buggy belongs to us. Some more examples: The bookstore sold his favorite book.He gives his baby a candy. After many years, they sold their house. Demonstrative Limiting Adjectives Demonstrative adjectives are used to modify a noun so that we know which specific person, place, or thing is mentioned. In other words, they demonstrate which thing the speaker is describing. This one or that one? For example: This tie is too tight. In this example, ‘this’ modifies the noun ‘tie’. So, we know which tie the speaker is referring to. These puppies are very playful. Again, the limiting adjective ‘these’ points out to some specific puppies. There are four demonstrative adjectives in English: this, these, that, those. this and these indicate that the items are fairly close in space or time, while that and those show the items that are further away. Use this and that before singular nouns and use these and those before plural nouns. Consider the following examples: Can you help me to move this box? In this example, ‘this’ modifies the noun ‘box’. The use of 'this' indicates that the box is close to the speaker. How much is that bag? Here, the speaker is referring to the bag which is far away. Some more examples: He lives in this house. They’re going to renovate those buildings. Note: Do not confuse demonstrative pronouns with demonstrative adjectives. They are identical, but a demonstrative pronoun stands alone, while a demonstrative adjective qualifies a noun. That looks good. (demonstrative pronoun)That film is awesome. (demonstrative adjective + noun) Indefinite Limiting Adjectives Indefinite adjectives offer general information about the amount of the noun they modify. They are: some, one, none, all, any, whole, such, other, and another.  They answer the question ‘HOW MANY or HOW MUCH?’ but they don’t show exactly the amount of something. Consider the following examples: All children will be taught to swim. How many children? - All of them. Can you grab some milk on your way home? Here, the word ‘some’ doesn’t point out to specific amount but gives us enough information that we know we should get milk. Several people witnessed the event. In this example, the indefinite adjective ‘several’ modifies the noun ‘people’ because the specific number of people that have witnessed the event isn't given. Some more examples: Teresa didn’t each much lunch.I don’t have any money.Lena had other plans. Note: Don’t confuse indefinite adjectives and indefinite pronouns. They look similar but function differently. Indefinite pronouns take the place of nouns. While indefinite adjectives modify nouns, they do not replace them. Consider the following examples: I don’t have any money.I don’t have any. Here, “any” is used as an indefinite pronoun and adjective. The first sentence uses any to replace an item (money, perhaps), i.e. it is a pronoun. The second sentence uses any as an adjective to modify money, answering the question, 'How much?' Interrogative Limiting Adjectives Interrogative adjectives ‘what’, ‘which’ and ‘whose’ modify nouns and pronouns in questions. They are similar to interrogative pronouns, but, unlike the latter, they can’t stand on their own. Consider the examples: Whose performance did you enjoy most? In this example, ‘whose’ is an interrogative adjective that modifies the noun ‘performance’. What wooden table should we get for our living room? Here, ‘what’ is an interrogative adjective that modifies the noun ‘living room’. ‘Wooden’ is a descriptive adjective that further describes the type of table being sought. The important point to keep in mind is that interrogative adjectives stand for the thing we do not know. Which hat is Paul’s? Here, we want to know specifically the hat that belongs to Paul. Some more examples: What mark will they give us?Which one is the delicious food in this restaurant?Whose turn is this? Cardinal and Ordinal Numbers as Limiting Adjectives Numbers (cardinal or ordinal) can function as limiting adjectives telling HOW MANY. There are quite many of them - one, two, three, the fifth, the 250th, etc. An unlimited number. Consider the examples: The three girls in the car are my sisters. Here, ‘three’ is an adjective referring to number and modifies ‘girls’. The torch requires two AA batteries. In this example, 'two' is a cardinal adjective that counts the number of batteries needed to use the torch. Numbers can be ordinal and cardinal. Cardinal adjectives are adjectives that modify the noun by numbering it (stating how many). Ordinal adjectives indicate the position of a noun in a series. Consider the following examples: We spent three months living and working in Tunisia. In this example, the cardinal adjective ‘three’ modifies the noun ‘months’ and states the exact period of time. This is the third month we are trying to get the project. Here, ‘the third’ is an ordinal adjective that indicates the position of the month, meaning that there were two months before it. Proper Adjectives Proper adjectives, like all adjectives, modify nouns, but they are different from other adjectives because they are formed from proper nouns. They are easily recognizable as they are always capitalized, e.g. Japanese food, Russian opera. They are often made from the names of cities, countries, or regions to describe the origin of something, but they can also be formed from the names of brands or individuals. Consider the examples: I love Italian food. Here, the proper adjective ‘Italian’ is formed from the proper noun ‘Italy’ and modifies the noun ‘food.’ In other words, ‘I like the food that comes from Italy.’ I’m really excited to use my new Fuji camera. In this example, the word ‘Fuji’ is the name of the brand but, when put before a noun, it becomes a proper adjective: ‘Fuji camera’ = ‘camera from the Fuji brand.’ Note: A proper adjective is usually formed by adding an ending to the noun. The most common endings are -ian, -an, -esque, -like, and -istic: — Portugal - Portugese, Island - Islandic, America - American, etc. However, sometimes we don’t add any endings to a proper noun to make it an adjective: — Berlin festival, Canon camera, etc. Some more examples: She has a real London etiquette. The Fourth of July is an American holiday. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. Nouns Used as Limiting Adjectives Sometimes nouns can be used as adjectives to define or describe another noun. They are put directly before the noun they modify. For example, in each of these phrases, the first word is a noun but here functions as an adjective modifying the second word: chicken pie, country government, book writer, Sunday picnic, bicycle thief. Compare: Ask the coffee machine guy if we need more coffee. Here, the phrase ‘coffee machine guy’ means ‘the guy in charge of the coffee machine’. My English teacher said my grammar was brilliant. In this example, the word ‘English’ acts as an adjective modifying the noun ‘teacher.’ The phrase means “a teacher of English”, telling us what the teacher teaches. Consider some more examples: The computer exhibition is on Sunday. Can we go to the bicycle shop today? What is your profession? I’m an article writer. Read the full article

Where does civic engagement come from? You will probably not be surprised to learn that the answer is “your parents” (who, in most cases, would give similar scores to your own). However, you probably will be surprised to learn that they passed these attitudes on to you genetically, rather than by being a good role model. Ancient Israel stood out among its ancient Near Eastern neighbors precisely because its legal traditions assume that the entire community is responsible for the welfare of the poor and vulnerable. In the epilogue to the Code of Hammurabi, the king of Babylon pledges to take care of the widow and the orphan—yet those vulnerable people are not protected by the body of the law code itself. In the Law of Moses, by contrast, the widow and orphan are explicitly protected by legislation (Exod 22:22) and given economic provision in the law code (Lev 19:9-10; Deut 24:17-21). Moses also mentions “the poor” (Exod 22:25; 23:6, 11) and “the aliens” (Exod 23:9; Deut 24:14), classes of people not even considered in any other ancient Near Eastern law code. While ancient Babylonians certainly considered it a nice thing to take care of vulnerable people, they never legislated it. For them, taking care of the vulnerable was a matter of personal responsibility, and the community should be left out of it.

Today, many researchers believe that they are five core personality traits. Evidence of this theory has been growing for many years, beginning with the research of D. W.
