I have so many thoughts and feelings about the expressions Angel makes in her brief comic cameo, (and Kazuya’s too!!) but us getting introduced to her like this is utterly heartbreaking!!
We see her one of two ways in the series, both canon and non canon:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serenely peaceful, even in situations where one would expect her to be rattled;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or something ranging from confident focus to righteous fury. (Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was the first game to show us more of an almost frightening seriousness to her and her fighting!)
So when a character that symbolizes hope, and good, and even stubborn unwillingness to give up says something like this:
Tumblr media
It makes us as readers wonder what’s happened? What’s gone so horribly wrong that the universe’s potential purest source of hope looks almost devoid of all emotion?
And then we see it. Then we learn what’s been going on, and why Angel’s here:
Tumblr media
She’s here as a pawn. She’s here for Heihachi’s own desires, to be exact.
(By this point in the issue, Angel’s been referred to as a multitude of things: a mistake, an associate, and a prize- none of which give her the respect that a being like her is deserving of, especially considering her position and level of power in the universe. These put her in the “object” category- which is almost strange for someone who Jin says is “the only being alive who can cure the Devil Gene.”)
But before anyone can stop him, Heihachi initiates what we discover to be a power transfer from Angel to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it hurts.
Even later, after Angel ends the power transfer on account of Heihachi’s (justified) unworthiness, he continues the “dehumanization-“ reminding her:
“Unworthy? I’m worth ten of you. Twenty.”
It’s only after she shocks Jin away from touching her that we hear what she’s been through under him; she talks about having her “wings clipped,” and being “locked in a cage,” both of which she describes as “torture” and “indignity” when all she wanted to do was.. Free Kazuya.
Tumblr media
What I think might say more about how she’s been treated is what she isn’t saying- especially when it comes to her time under Heihachi.
We know Jin’s motives were to find some way to rid himself of the Devil Gene- and Angel represents an opportunity to achieve what he’s needed
But Heihachi has no need for her. He has no reason to hold on to her beyond what he desires. He has no reason to treat her as anything better than an object.
And if Heihachi- who already values her as an object- is willing to commit the almost sacrilegious act of wielding her power by force, then it makes us wonder what else he was willing to put her through in order to reach that point.
What other lines would he have crossed had they not gotten there in time?
It makes me almost wish we had learned a bit more about what went on during her captivity- but seeing her (probably rightful!) frustration at how she’s been treated makes me almost glad we didn’t see it.

𝐓𝐄𝐊𝐊𝐄𝐍 𝟔 | 𝐉𝐈𝐍 𝐊𝐀𝐙𝐀𝐌𝐀 | 𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐀 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐌𝐒.
How I would have liked to see more interactions from them in Tekken 7 or Tekken 8. Although their paths separated after the end of Tekken 6, they are both very similar in some ways.
They both lost someone dear to them, both are reserved enough to talk about their problems. Both have some feud with members of their own family. Let's keep in mind that Jin wasn't exactly very talkative with everyone, only he knew the objective of his plan in Tekken 6 (Excluding Zafina and third parties). When Jin seemingly dies, Nina meets with Lars and tells him that Jin sacrificed everything to defeat Azazel. That it's not her decision to judge Jin for what he did.
That makes me understand that she did empathize with him in some way. Which leads me to theorize that Jin at some point told Nina his true plans, about waking up and taking down Azazel.
In addition, it could be considered that working as Jin's bodyguard was one of the few jobs that Nina completed successfully in all the games in the saga. In the first and second Tekken she fails his assassination missions, in Tekken 4 she does the same for Steve, in Tekken 7 she abandons Heihachi and recently in Tekken 8 she does the same with Kazuya. But hey, at least we have Tekken 6, Blood Vengaence and the comics although the latter two are not canonical.

So I’ve been thinking today about a new au idea I had: RWBY/Tekken.
I tried writing a story about rwby and mortal kombat, but ultimately I had a hard time blending the two universes together. But while I’ve always liked the lore, I’ve gotten into Tekken hard, and believe I can blend the two much easier.
Tekken is a story about generations and so is rwby. So the characters from the first two days will be contemporaries of team strq, while the post time skip characters appear in team rwby’s time. My other big crazy idea: having Ruby be a composite character with Jin. Her father isn’t Taiyang or Qrow, it’s Kazuya Mishima. She has the Devil Gene, the blood feuds with her family members and the ridiculous Mishima hair. As Ruby tries to struggle with the darkness inside of her, I will adapt the insane lore of Tekken to Remnant, and see all the crazy ways these franchises can clash.
Other initial ideas I had include the devil gene being a Grimm transformation, Salem in place of Azazel, the SDC in place of G Corp, Kuma being a bear with his aura activated a la zwei, Paul being a relative of Jaune’s, Penny becoming bffs with Alisa, Qrow and Lee beefing over who gets to be Ruby’s cool uncle, Bryan and Lei being (ex in Bryan’s case) atlesian specialists, and some of the fighters being friends with team rwby at Beacon.
All and all, I’m really looking forwards to this one.

I'm ashamed of myself for forgetting about fighting games 😳 but yes, Lilith being way into Tekken or Soul Calibur feels very right (it's the intergenerational trauma and blood feuds). ⏹️
She's one of those players who knows all the combos and does has them to kick ur ass if u even so much as try to attack her like she's soooo annoying to play against, she's the terror of the online scene

|| Alright, migraine is not being kind enough to shush but I can fully think about this new direction T8 is leading Nina in and jot down more thoughts. :
First off, I'm honestly concerned about Nina's character being done justice. At first glance her working for Kazuya is a really out of character move considering her past trauma with him, her companionship with Jin, and her subtle tendencies in leaning towards fighting for the good of the world. And an out of character move like that after the injustice done to her in the recent anime that shall not be named (and them even referencing it in Xiaoyu's trailer)... big oof. Huge clumps of salt being rubbed into a open wound. I'm swimming in salt water and there's blood attracting sharks 🫠
However, we have seen Nina work with Kazuya in the past as well, in the noncanonical Street Fighter X Tekken. — Nina worked for Kazuya and assisted him in his search for Pandora, only to turn around and betray him by revealing she was working for Jin the whole time, and was trying to get Pandora for Jin's benefit. And I firmly believe one of the only ways they can pull this off while staying true to Nina's character, is if she pulls a similar stunt as she did then.
The only other option I could think of is Nina could be working for him against her will somehow, but seeing how she behaved in her trailer? It seems unlikely. Honestly she appeared almost.. more at peace in her trailer. She even smiled more than usual. It wouldn't make sense.
But otherwise??? This move makes no sense at all. — And another thing, where is Anna? Her usual move in instances like this would be to pull the opposite of her sister in order to try and one up her. In this case, that would be assisting Yggdrasil and the rebellion somehow. Okay, fine, until you remember she's kinda responsible for Tougou's death???? That wouldn't make any sense at all either? So where is she??
Was my theory about the wedding fiasco being a set up correct? Is that part of the reason Nina's working there to begin with, to find answers so she can put her and Anna's feud to rest? Is Anna just going after her or possibly even Steve in the meantime and that's part of why Nina's willing to go to these unusual lengths? Who knows!
While secondly I love how my Queen is likely going to be part of the main plot again this time around, I will not stand for her entire character and possibly Anna's as well being altered just so they can be a plot device and possibly discarded again.
So to end things, so help me, if you fail Nina again I will go canon-divergent, Harada, Murray you watch me 😤
Final side note tho : I'm not going back and remaking Nina's icons again just to remove the zaibatsu logo. You can't make me 🙃 No but might do it for her T8 icons cause there's not too many of those, but otherwise hi I will cry. ☹️

Welcome to the fun sequel to my last post on Angel in Blood Feud- featuring our special guest star, Kazuya!! A lot of his expressions and actions are just as interesting to look at!
Kazuya's a character that we all know and love- he's been a major face for the entire franchise since its beginning, and he's one of the characters that we know the best! Barring Tekken 3, he's been in every single game- and as we watch him lean further and further into the Devil Gene, we watch his beliefs solidify to an almost unshakeable degree. This shows more as he ages, and in the emphasis placed on his outfits- shifting from more of a "dojo-ready training" look to elegant, almost king-like suits.
Kazuya's expressions throughout the games reflect this, and we know him very well. He's battle hardened, and he's been that way for a very long time. He scowls, he frowns, he glares- and that's only if he's deemed something important enough to glare at. Most other things are meaningless- he is a man on a mission, and he'll stop at nothing to achieve what he aims for.
The only two times we see him smile, (at the very beginning, and at what could be the very end of his character arc), it's for something that he's done that solidifies his own strength. (Tekken even used his latest smirk as a callback to the original, in the very first teaser we got!)
youtube
So when we learn in the first issue that Kazuya's main goal in finding Jin is killing him- we're not surprised. It's what he's been after even in canon, and we know there's no paternal affection. (At least not any that he wants to display.)
Tumblr media
But in their first interaction, Kazuya's interactions with Jin are a little different. While we don't know much about what Kazuya truly thinks of Jin (besides snippets of him either wanting to extract his portion of power back, or taunting Jin for giving into Devil Jin), this Kazuya openly accepts and acknowledges Jin as his son- even if it's his way of trying to taunt Jin's devil form out, and looking forward to the "fight" that side of Jin will give him.
Tumblr media
As we move through the comic, we learn that Jin is looking for something called "Artefact 333"- something that we later find out is Angel. And we've also learned that Kazuya is having visions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Visions that are getting increasingly frequent- and visions strong enough to give him nosebleeds. Kazuya believes these visions are from a spiraling Jin who's losing control of his own power- and in the brief glimpse we're given, this one in particular contains a Devil Jin mid-lunge, a silhouetted winged figure (that we can infer is Angel herself), a cackling Heihachi, and an unnamed woman holding something that looks like a scientific instrument.
The next time we see Kazuya, after his initial confrontation with Jin, it's when he learns that Jin is in search of Artefact 333. And despite not yet knowing what the artifact truly is, Kazuya decides to root around in Zaibatsu files for it on his own.
We know that Jin and his team make it there first- and we discover that Artefact 333 is Angel: previously captured by Jin, and now subject to Heihachi's desire for power.
But for Kazuya, this revelation comes in a bit of a different manner.
Tumblr media
"...I thought she was lost!"
Kazuya gets what we can only assume to be his final vision- and his words manage to give us just enough information to fill us in while leaving gaps to make us wonder.
The image of Angel fighting Devil Kazuya fits perfectly within her ending in Tekken Tag Tournament 2- and he knows enough about her to recognize her purpose for being there, and when she disappeared. It's enough to make the reader wonder what he'd thought- had he thought himself too irredeemable for her to help? Had he thought she'd fully abandoned him, or been snuffed out by the rising corruption in the world?
(Another interesting quote is from Anna- it implies that she also knows about Angel in the comic's timeline. Whether that's from seeing Angel herself, or being told about her by Kazuya later, Kazuya doesn't seem to worry about Anna knowing.)
Kazuya's next actions say more than his words. He'd come for Jin, and Jin alone- he had no other reason to be there. But after learning that Angel's inside, and that she'd been calling for help...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His entire focus shifts. He eliminates Paul after asking him where Angel's being held...
Tumblr media
Bolts away from the outside battle- and away from a now-temporarily-dead Anna..
Tumblr media
...And arrives just in time to save Jin, and enter the battle against the ascended fighters that Angel has resurrected. He even refers to Jin as a Mishima- something Jin might not accept, but a strangely uniting phrase for him to say. This means accepting Jin fully as his own blood.
Somewhere after learning that Angel was here, Kazuya's motives changed entirely. He had no reason to stay after learning what was going on. He could have easily left, and allowed Heihachi to eliminate Jin for him. He could have waited for the two of them to tire themselves out, and end them both without a moment's hesitation.
But he didn't.
Tumblr media
Angel sees that too.
Out of the three Mishima men here, two have imprisoned her against her will- and no matter what Kazuya and Angel's association was in the past, he joins the fight solely to get things under control. She looks almost surprised to see him- another expression that isn't the norm for her. She could be relieved to see him, and to know that he wants nothing from her. It could be a reminder of a time that was a bit more hopeful.
Things continue, and the battle heightens. Once the resurrected fighters are all defeated, and Jin embraces his Devil form, what does Kazuya do?
Tumblr media
He watches.
Out of all the remaining parties, it's Kazuya that stands closest to where Angel is. He doesn't fight, or enter his own devil form- which he can summon upon will, as opposed to Jin.
Even when Devil Jin frees Angel, and the two begin their battle in the sky, he doesn't join. He doesn't take advantage of Jin's shift in attention, nor does he chase them. His work is done.
And when the battle is over, and both Jin and Angel are nowhere to be found- he leaves. There is no battle with Heihachi. There is no waiting for Jin.
Tumblr media
He gets back in his car- stares out the window in contemplation- and exits our view of him within the Blood Feud comic. This is the last time we see him.
Like with Jin in canon, Kazuya never explicitly says his thoughts on Angel, or how he feels about her. One would think with his quest to obtain power that he'd hate everything she stood for- or even that he'd be resentful towards her for trying to free him from the very gene that gave him his demonic powers.
But the major shift in his actions say something else entirely, without him having to say a word. He cared enough about her to competely disregard killing Jin, something he'd more than likely been planning for ages, and fight for the purpose of calming things down enough to free her. Her power does not, and cannot, belong to Heihachi.
It's enough to make some readers wonder just how evil Kazuya Mishima really is.

If You Need to End a Backlog, You Call Wonder Woman.
-Vidja Games:  Got Tekken 7 and beat the story mode.  Little disappointed that the characters not related to Heihachi get shafted in that regard (okay...a lot disappointed), but I’m still having a ball just playing a new Tekken again.
-Comics:  Tekken: Blood Feud #1; Teen Titans: The Lazarus Contract Special #1; The Flash #23; and Cable #1.
-Movies:  Wonder Woman.
-TV:  Most recent episodes of Lucifer and Gotham.
-Anime:  Anti-Magic Academy 35th Test Platoon; Assassination Classroom seasons 1-2; and the most recent episodes of Yowamushi Pedal: New Generation, Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor, Sakura Quest, Love Tyrant, My Hero Academia 2, and Tiger Mask W.
Had I not started Assassination Classroom, my weekend would’ve been consumed by Tekken 7.  Both did prevent me from getting caught up on all the anime I’m watching this season.  Also, if you haven’t seen Wonder Woman, go.  Go see it now.
Tumbl on.
