I want to think Heavy is completely fine with having to readjust to a new unit system, he just eyeballs most practical things anyways by holding them up and mumbling about how they approximately weigh like a chicken or his kettle bell etc. He's always been living in practical ignorant bliss.

Medic has a peer reviewed meltdown the first time he realises there's no uniformity in "a cup of ____" because every object has different densities. He's diligent about memorising the conversion rates for ounces, pounds, the most common things etc., and recovers ok. He goes through the same stages of grief rage when he finds out about distances and lengths.

Just remember four inches are 10.16 cm and pray no one asks you to specify anything bigger than inches.

Everyone does a mental victory lap when they manage to guess how much Celsius the weather is because they keep forgetting it's Celsius*5/9+32=Fahrenheit, Engineer reminds them patiently.

The true victories are the correct temperature guesses we've made along the way.

One time, a friend asked me if I actually knew how much a tablespoon of flour was in gramms to convince me that metric users also make use of volume based units without thinking about them. But little did she know a heaped spoonful of 405 flour is about 15g and a level tablespoon is 10g.

They claim Oolong just tastes better when it's boiled to 80°C exactly with a Bunsen burner.

Ok so I’m Mexican American (ew america) and my mom was born and raised in Mexico

Yet I’m not bilingual

I’m taking Spanish class in my high school

This is what I think the rottmnt kids are going thru

My mother had to assimilate to get a job here. And I think that’s what rottmnt Yoshi had to do too.

But my mother refused to make my first language spanish, she wanted my life here to be easier.

I think Yoshi didn't want to be reminded of what he left behind.

He used his ninjitsu skills to become a movie star and actively runs away from his heritage from the show.

Not that he doesn't want to be Japanese, or that he wants to forget that part of himself, but he wanted to branch out and be Lou Jitsu, and japanese tradition and culture are not as important to him and his identity as 2012 Splinter.

He ran away from tradition.

I firmly hc that the rottmnt turtle know japanese in the way I know spanish; nothing beside the scoldings and the frustrated mumbling of their father.

"Kuso!" Their dad will yell as he stubs his foot.

"Konoyarou," He mumbles as he talks about a person who screamed at the sight of him.

I hc that rottmnt Splinter has a potty mouth, and because of the all his kids know is how to curse and scold someone in japanese, which you know, they use to insult each other.

The rottmnt kids have to go out of their way to learn japanese, it's an underlying language in their home and a part of their heritage, but they live like third generation immigrants.

As opposed to the 2012 turtles, whose first language was most definitely japanese.

2012 Splinter grew up, fell in love, and lived in Japan for the majority of his life. He loved his heritage and tradition, the only reason he moved to New York was because he was literally running for his life. It was chance that he ended up in America.

In Japanese schools, much like many other schools in different countries, have a class that teaches english bc ya know, it's the national language bc british and american ppl be pissbabies. So Splinter learned english, and like the good student he was, was good at it.

That why for he lived there he could live comfortably and could talk to others (like the pet shop owner), bc he already knew english.

Then he got mutated and four sons lmao.

So he raised them the way he was raised; traditionally japanese. The language, the tradition, the customs, everything.

So all the tmnt teetles are fluent in japanese, and a part of the reason they were not allowed topside before they were 15 is because they weren't done learning english yet.

They often forget words in english, and in the heat of the moment, it's the first language that comes up.

Raph and Mikey's english slang comes from the comics they've read and the movies they watched.

Leo's english mimics basic english textbooks and Captain Ryan's

Donnie sounds like an encyclopedia bc that's where he gets most of his vocabulary from.

TLDR: The rottmnt turtles only know insults and curse words in japanese while the 2012 turtles are bilingual; fluent in both Japanese and English because of the way their respective Splinters raised them.

A ceramic sugar skull I got at a Day of the Dead festival in Mexico when I lived near the border. An old Joe Montana football figure I’ve had since the late 80s. I have another wooden carved figure of “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” in the form of the three 🙈 🙊🙉 monkeys that my late grandmother had at her office for many years. I have a Peruvian fertility statue that I got from my late Great Uncle who was world traveler and artist.

48. What is a hobby you’d like to take up? I’d love to get a shop set up and work with either metal smithing or making resin art, maybe even metal restoration. Don’t know that I have any skill for any of it but it looks interesting and fun.

50. How does one make you smile? Others smiling and being happy does the job for me. It’s truly contagious.

So why, then, did The CW clean house this season? The blame isn’t squarely on network CEO Mark Pedowitz. Broadcast’s longest-tenured network topper reports to a board comprised of execs from Warners and CBS Studios, who for years have played a vital role in programming decisions. For example: While Dynasty has had the distinction of being broadcast’s lowest-rated scripted series for years, revenue from the reboot’s international sales and the Netflix deal kept it on the air for far longer than its linear numbers deserved. So after five seasons of living life on the bubble that included a wild history of casting changes, why did time run out on Dynasty and so many other CW favorites?

Blame streaming. And mergers. And The CW’s impending sale.

Warners and CBS Studios — now overseen by newly merged Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global — ended the Netflix output deal in 2019 to help boost their respective streaming platforms, HBO Max and Paramount+. Foreign sales, too, have dried up as those rights need to stay in-house as both platforms continue their global expansion in a bid to compete with Netflix and company in the streaming wars. That’s a loss of billions of dollars in revenue, making shows like Dynasty, for example, no longer profitable.

Without those two revenue streams, and amid new corporate ownership, the free lunches are officially over as both of The CW’s corporate parents are in active sale talks with station group Nexstar and other potential buyers.

While The CW is expected to look considerably different next season — expect more low-cost foreign acquisitions and unscripted programming — the network’s most-watched originals are all returning. The CW gave early renewals to seven of its eight returning shows, all of them among its highest rated. Sources say Pedowitz wanted to bring back the Greg Berlanti-produced DC Comics dramas Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow but Warners no longer wanted to pay the leases on the studio space, which expired May 1, and prompted April 29 cancellations. Plec’s Legacies was also said to be a financial decision made by the studio.

Legends and Legacies, along with Charmed, In the Dark and Roswell, New Mexico all were part of the Netflix output deal.

And before anyone can start a petition for the unfortunate shows that met their early demise this week, keep in mind that HBO Max and Paramount+ can’t save those lucky shows that were able to stay on the air as long as they did because they were part of the Netflix deal. Sorry, Legacies, Legends, Dynasty, Charmed, In the Dark and Roswell, as Plec said, “Today we mourn.”

Corporate greed destroyed CW. Paramount Global and Warner Bros wanted to compete with Netflix so badly that they made CW (a network they owned) unwind their Netflix deal.

I had wondered for the longest time why Batwoman was on HBO Max instead of Netflix and found out it was because CW ended their output deal with Netflix. I knew then CW was in trouble -- true enough a year after I learned about it, CW announced it's being put on sale.

Another thing I learned about HBO Max's/Warner Bros Day and Date release in 2020 and the outrage it caused among filmmakers is that Warner Bros putting their 2020-2021 movies on HBO Max meant the filmmakers/studios couldn't shop around their movies to other streaming platforms and would actually make less money. Because going straight to HBO Max meant WB would just be paying itself and at a lower cost too.

This is basically what happened with CW, CW used to have a sweet output deal where they just churn out shows regardless of ratings because Netflix and foreign markets would pay handsomely for the shows. The moment Paramount Global and Warner Bros decided to compete with Netflix and turned their eye on CW, was the moment CW was toast.

Because Paramount Global and Warner Bros were never going to pay CW the kind of numbers Netflix was willing to pay.

(Mind you, this was before the market corrected itself and Netflix's stocks fell to more reasonable figures-- which unfortunately triggered Netflix going around like a headless chicken because they've just been focusing on acquiring customers and not retaining them. Again, corporate greed).

This also means, unfortunately, as much as my heart wants it, there are no saving Legacies because Paramount Plus and HBO Max are the reason why Legacies was canceled in the first place. Netflix is also having its own problems, so there's a very slim chance for a save from there.

It's also a bitter pill to swallow knowing the reason why Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman were canceled was that Warners couldn't be bothered paying the lease on studio space. That's it. The whole reason.

Warners. Didn't. Want. To. Pay. Studio. Space.

nate is the second youngest of five children (two older brothers – brian & james, one older sister – heather, and a younger sister – beth) and was born/raised in reno, nevada. his dad has retired but owned his own appliance repair business. nate's mother was an emergency room nurse, but she has also retired. his parents now both live in a retirement community in north carolina so they can visit the beaches in the summer season. his eldest sibling inherited the hackett home back in reno, where nate's comic and fan memorabilia collection is stored.

since there were five kids in the hackett house, it was always kind of a whirlwind. there were always birthdays happening, friends tromping through the house, holidays with extended family, and fights over room/toy/clothes sharing. the one thing that nate had to himself was his love of all things geeky.

none of his other siblings shared his interest in various comic books, card/tabletop games, and movies. he was free to explore those interests all on his own.

every week, nate would use his lunch money to buy new issues of comics being serialized. he would draw, at first, by tracing the panels in comics that he found the most intriguing. he branched off to drawing his own heroes and villains, writing storylines for them, and stapling together stacks of printer paper he had turning them into "comics."

the same store where he bought his comics in reno also held various tabletop gaming nights where nate met many friends who shared his interests.

nate got his first job as a sophomore in high school at the comic shop, it was where he spent most of his time anyways so he might as well get paid to be there.

when it came time to decide on after high school plans, nate's dad was urging him to take on the family trade of appliance repair. already, nate's two eldest siblings were working on the family business. one had gone to technical school to become an electrician and the other had done training in general appliance repair while apprenticing with nate's dad.

his third eldest sibling had disappointed nate's mom and dad by leaving nevada and going out of state to study communications. they wanted to be a journalist, not work for the family's appliance repair business.

nate was about to disappoint them just as much, he applied not only for technical schools but out-of-state colleges as well. the university of new mexico gave him a hefty scholarship, and the opportunity to study visual art, but to appease his parents he chose instead to go to central new mexico community college to study heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR).

he loved new mexico so much, though, that he made the decision not to return home after completing his associates. his parents were upset at his decision, but were still proud of the fact that he had chosen to pursue the family's trade with appliance repair. he made the move to roswell after living in albuquerque from the time he was 18 to the time he was 24. while in albuquerque he was working as an appliance repairman but he honestly hated having to constantly zip around from house to house everyday just to do his job. he made the decision that he wanted to work somewhere stable.

when he saw the lunar laundromat in roswell was hiring, he thought it was the perfect fit. he had the skills to fix the washers and dryers when they went down, but he was also could sit at the counter and read comic books during the downtime he had. he could also work on drawing his own comic.

currently his paycheck goes to four things: rent/bills, groceries, comics, and art supplies.

he still does some freelance repair work for extra cash on the side. but, you'll mainly find him at either the lunar landromat, forbidden planet, or at home.

personality wise: nate is real geeky, he appreciates a good pun and rarely takes anything seriously. he will gladly ramble on and on about anything and everything that is related to his favorite subjects (art, comics, magic: the gathering, pokemon cards, the star wars franchise, the warner bros monsterverse, and other weird old movies)

his favorite color is a red-orange, he frequently wears his red-orange windbreaker and a las vegas 51s baseball cap. he prefers dc to marvel, especially because his favorite series is swamp thing. he is most proud of the fact he owns swamp thing #1 with a 9.6 certified guaranty company (cgc) rating. this means it is in near mint condition and alone is worth approx. $1k. he also has a personalized autograph from len wein (the original writer of the series).

he frequently drives to comic cons in the western states (primarily CO, NM, AZ, NV, and CA). for his 18th birthday, his parents bought him VIP passes for san diego comic con which was like his dream come true.

Remembering 'From Parts Unknown'

Back in the late 1990's there was this strange little hole-in-the-wall comic shop in Sydney called 'The Land Beyond Beyond'. One day Lili Chin excitedly rushed into our animation studio with a new magazine she found on their shelves. But not just any magazine; a magazine ENTIRELY about MASKED WRESTLERS!!!!

We had been dabbling with a new idea based on lucha libre - something called 'Lucha School' - and to find that someone, somewhere had brilliantly, passionately and accurately documented everything you had ever wanted to know about this genre - a genre I might add that hardly anyone outside of Mexico knew about - was mind blowing.

But there it was - 'From Parts Unknown' - brainchild of Keith J. Rainville, straight out of Massachusetts to the world.

FPU ran for a good number of issues with great distribution until the early 2000's when - as KR himself said - "the world caught up". It was always brilliantly put together, always telling you something you didn't know, always opinionated, always inventive, always inspiring and always funny.

The site is still up if you want to read the first two issues online. For me it hit its stride around issue #3 and soared until the end of its run.

darren barnet & he&him/ cis male ‷ watch out , kaito “kai” lazlo has crash-landed into roswell !! they look thirty and celebrate their birthday on the fifth of march. they are from roswell, new mexico, reside in tripp’s trailer park  and are currently working as veterinarian. one thing you should know about them is they love looking up new conspiracies about the universe.‷ 

aanya and ricardo lazlo were married two years before they had kaito lazlo (prefers to be called kai), the eldest of the two lazlo children. the lazlo family was always a very laid-back kind of family. as long as both children were doing well in school, nothing lower than a B, they were pretty much free to do as they pleased within reason. it was a perk that kai had always taken full advantage of; plus, it helped that he also loved school. from a young age, he loved learning, and he was quick to pick things up. he was speaking at a much earlier age than most babies did, and even in kindergarten, he was asking questions that a second or third grader should've been asking. he was a curiosity to his teachers and a proud example for his parents, but all in all, he was just kai.

despite how he could excel in school that never stopped him from going a bit overboard with gaming, comics, science fiction television, crime podcasts, and so much more stuff that he loved to indulge in whenever there was a moment. sometimes he would stay up all hours of the night going hard on a new level of call of duty with some mates, screaming so loud, he'd sometimes wake up his parents and then get a light scolding to get off the game and get rest. but when kai wasn't diving into games or books, he visited the local record shop in town. nothing fascinated kai more than music and its history. after school, you could often find him hanging around feel good records.

as much as he loved his life in roswell, kai often thought about what life outside the town was like. he dreamed of a day he'd get the chance to get up and leave. during his college years, his second year to be exact, he met someone who kind of made him feel like he had left roswell in a way. she captivated him from the beginning with her dazzling smile and warm gaze; it was safe to say that kai was a goner. unlike him, she had come from london and had traveled to plenty of places. egypt, paris, turkey, everywhere he could only dream of going. they would spend hours just talking about her trips around the world, the best and worst parts of it all, and she would often ask him questions about himself too. even though they had an off-and-on relationship after they turned twenty-two, they never had any ill feelings towards each other.

at the age of twenty-five, everything for kai changed in plenty of ways. both his parents passed in a terrible car accident during winter, it was all over the roswell paper, and that same year he found out his girlfriend (then off) was pregnant. it felt like he barely had a chance to process his parent's death before he had to put on a happy face and suddenly accept and focus on the fact that he was about to be a father. as stressful as it all felt, kai did not stop working hard for a future that could be bright for his family. what he didn't realize, however, was that his partner did not share the same vision. the moment little clementine was born and able to be taken home, kai awoke the following day to a crying baby and a letter from the mother stating how sorry she was. she had noted in the letter that her feelings were deep for her friend april. for that, he was not upset with her; he was upset that she could abandon clementine the way she did.

picking up his broken pieces, kai quickly stepped into his new father role. he had ZERO idea of what he was doing, but the man tried. it wasn't all bad. in all of this, kai had a good friend who helped him throughout everything (WANTED CONNECTION). even if sometimes clementine's piggy tails weren't precisely the same level, she was a happy little kid, and he wouldn't change anything for the world. 

NOW he lives in one of the bigger trailers in tripp’s trailer park. clementine is seven and attends the local roswell elementary school. he went on to become a vetenarian. another habit he had, one clementine seems to have picked up, is bringing home any animal in need and nursing it back to health. now he just gets paid for it. he's very laid back and gentle when it comes to handling all the animals in his care and delivering any sad news to the families of the animals. clementine can sometimes be seen hanging around the animal hospital whenever he can't find a babysitter for her and it seems as if she will also be following in his footsteps of taking on the business as she often enjoys being his assistant and caring for the animals in any way she can. 

personality:

 super laid back, chill vibes, peaceful kind of guy. he’s proud to be a papa bear and if you let him he’ll probably go on about clementine for hours. he loves a good party and will sometimes find a babysitter so he can go out to a local house party a friend is throwing or the local bars. he’s there for anyone who needs it, whenever they need it, and is always ready to lend a helping hand. 

sexuality:

bisexual. he thinks he is anyway. he’s never actually been with a guy in any way, but he hopes to one day explore that part of him.

Im finally home. My mom visited and whisked me away on a two day shopping trip, as she's often opt to do whenever we get together. Ignoring her pleas and how I should totally abandon my home and come live with her again with my sibling, because they miss me terribly, it was a nice outing.

I don't normally go to the city much unless I need to buy bulk dry goods or emergency supplies, so it was a nice distraction. I got some cute summer clothes, that Instax Evo camera I've been eying, Tama Pix, and a thermal printer for journaling. Just stuff I've been debating on letting her buy for me since December. I'm not a fan of her taste in clothes for me, I kinda hate white, but I let her pick at least one item for me. So now I have a white summer dress that I'll probably use underneath my black one.

We discussed our yearly summer vacation plans. I'm really looking forward to it this time. We haven't vacationed since 2019, when that global mess hit. I can't wait to go to San Diego and San Capistrano. I miss the ocean and camping. I miss the Hotel Del Coronado we used to stay in. And I miss the road trip getting there! No, really! I love the long drive through small towns, finding weird tourist traps, and seeing some neat landmarks. Reminds me of my childhood and when I eventually left home after high school to go exploring on my own. There's this sense of discovery. We plan on leaving in June but if the labs don't let me go - since summer is busy season for research - I might just go in May instead.

A lot of natural disasters have been hitting the state, so if we can't enjoy Southern Cali, we'll just go up North instead. Maybe visit my hometown. I'd love to visit the aquarium and go kayaking. Weird coincidence though, every year I use to visit Cali, not a single natural disaster hit. I was always a bit paranoid of wildfires or flooding, yet we never experienced it when over there. My mom tells me I'm a lucky charm. That's why New Mexico has been enjoying good conditions since 2020, we even had the lowest mortality rate during the peak of covid. Lol nah its coincidence. Maybe some higher power is looking out for me.

Right now I just want to relax, but I also have to put away the stuff I bought, and I'm hungry, and I need to do a report for work tomorrow. Sigh.

@starblue2406 I'm also so sorry I haven't gotten to that drawing I promised you! I'm just not happy with my sketches or linear, I want to make it into a comic panel but yeah...no excuse. I'll do it tomorrow!!

Book Signing with Lisa Hodorovych

It’s not every day that we do a BOOK signing. Usually it’s graphic novels, comics or something with more pictures (y’know - for those of us that don’t do words good haha!) but Lisa Hodorovych is a local author and friend of East Side Mags and we support our friends so she’s coming by with her 2 books that are sure to put the shake in your boots!
