‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Behind the Scenes: How Fashion Defines Each Character (PHOTOS)

Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey (2011-2016) [mod note: on PBS in the US], set that upstairs-downstairs series at a palatial British estate on the eve of World War I. He moved his newest costume drama Stateside to the streets of New York City. Set in the late 1800s, The Gilded Age, which has its second-season premiere on Sunday, October 29 on HBO (streaming on Max), pits the new money of railroad barons against the old money of New York society. The powerful fight for control of the city and use their wealth to measure social success. And dressing for success was its own full-time occupation.

When researching women’s fashion in 1800s New York, the show’s costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone saw one thing clearly: “Their life was a catwalk. There was this enormous excitement” when the ladies trekked the bustling, dusty streets of Manhattan. Her job was to recreate that excitement for contemporary viewers of The Gilded Age.

Fashion as a Sign of Status

Who’s doing all this promenading? Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) arrived in NYC with no money and was taken in by her aunts Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes (Christine Baranski), both living off an inheritance. Then the newly affluent Russells—headed by railroad baron George (Morgan Spector) and wife Bertha (Carrie Coon), who is determined to break into polite society—moved in across the street.

The frill thrills continue in Season 2, especially in a pivotal garden party scene (pictured below) that TV Insider observed being filmed in September 2022 at New York’s lavish Old Westbury Gardens estate. (Westbury House was previously home to an heir of the Phipps family, real-life Gilded Age figures whose patriarch made his fortune alongside Andrew Carnegie at his steel company.) On set was Fellowes, whose smart black suit and tie were the only dark hues around.

Historically Accurate Costumes

It’s a testament to the wardrobe department that the stunning colors of the sprawling grounds nearly pale in comparison to the vibrancy of the women’s period garb. Despite the sepia-toned images in history books, Walicka-Maimone says, those bright tints are decidedly historically accurate. She has a library of more than 35,000 reference images to prove it.

“It’s shocking to our modern eye to see the explosion of color from that period,” she said. Production designer Bob Shaw (who won an Emmy for his work on Gilded Age) was present to share his creative process, which, just as Walicka-Maimone described of her own work, is “deeply steeped in history.”

He does note that, when deciding between “what is correct and what feels correct,” the latter always wins. Creative liberties are taken to “build [character] histories into the costumes,” Walicka-Maimone added.

A Garden Party to Remember

Take Brit newcomers Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr) and his daughter, Frances (Matilda Lawler), for example. Nephew by marriage to Baranski’s Agnes, Dashiell requires more “toned-down” attire suitable for social outings, which contrasts with Season 1’s primarily business and formal menswear.

Dashiell must escort Frances through society in his late wife’s absence. One consideration for Walicka-Maimone: “This is a girl who doesn’t have a mother, so there’s probably extra care from all the other family members in [dressing her],” she said.

Meanwhile, Marian, who Jacobson said is “shining this season and sees herself in [younger] Frances,” will be more open to a strategic marriage. Marian’s “not necessarily cynical” after being jilted by Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel) in last season’s finale, the actress continued, but the heartbreak gives her a “spice and edge.”

Don’t count out the possibility of a romance with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), son of the railroad titan, which was teased last year. Jacobson shared: “They will definitely continue to deepen their friendship.” Old money and new money unite!

On one hand, ToTK not getting game of the year is great.

On the other hand, good god I can't imagine how MAD the fandom and Nintendy are.

Honestly, I think this, combined to the way Aonuma was treated when he did receive the (again, in my opinion well-deserved) award, which was utterly unnacceptable --both for him and for any gamedev who just wanted more than 30 seconds to celebrate their insane achievements in an otherwise very hard year-- might lead to some degree of animosity between the two entities moving forward. Maybe they will move past that, but I don't know a single person in the industry who are happy about how this all went down --from ignoring the open letter about Palestine to refusing to acknowledge the layoffs bleeding talent and leaving them out to dry in a year of record profits, the commodification of gamedev achievements as a platform for more ads and more desperate and gross flirting with Hollywood... A bunch of people are also assuming the 30 seconds rule was explicitely put into place to prevent devs from talking about either topic during their speeches given the amount of buildup and controversies surrounding the event before it even started (I am one of those people), but that it then ended up hitting Aonuma just as much as anyone else might have worsened everybody's relationship to the event...

I cannot stress enough how much we appreciate the love players give to the world and the story of Lies of P. There sure are stories we could not introduce in the game, and I think it makes players wonder if Round8 Studio is willing to unfold those stories in different forms of media. We have received offers from various parties about it already. It is too early to share any detailed plan for it now. However, I believe we can say that the Studio is exploring options to continue the story of Lies of P in a positive way.

Possible inspiration for Maud Beaton?

Someone on the tga subreddit mentioned Winnaretta Singer as a possible inspiration for the character of Maude Beaton so, I decided to look into it. If Maud is a lesbian and she and oscar are headed towards a lavender wedding, Singer would be an interesting source of inspiration.

This is an interview with a biographer of hers. The biography studies music, so a lot of the vid is her recounting Singer's contribution to music through her salon (at 5:17 they get more into her personal life):

If her life really is inspiration for the oscar plot, we could get a rough idea of what the rest of the season looks like if her life really is inspiration for the oscar plot in season 2. From looking at her second husband Prince Edmond de Polingnac's wikipedia, it seems like he was an older gay man who had had long term relationships with men in the past. Edmond was the inspiration of some famous characters and is described as "using his wit to shield himself from sincere emotion". He seems to have started his relationship with Singer after loosing a lot of money due to bad investments.

With what we know from previews and spoilers and what I found online here is a possible shape of the rest of the season. Maud could be a closet lesbian who wants to marry Oscar for his social pedigree and the freedom he offers. They could become friends and ultimately marry to help solve Oscar's financial situation. They may have a mutually beneficial situation with differing ideas on what marriage is about. If this is the case it could be interesting to see where they differ on the topic of having kids (something oscar cites as his reason for wanting to get married).

Anyway those are my meager findings. If you are interested I for sure recommend reading more about Singer and de Polingnac.

Although there seemed to be signs suggesting otherwise, Sega basically announced everything but a new Virtua Fighter at The Game Awards 2023 this past week.

The Washington Post recently interviewed Sega co-COO and Sega of America CEO Shuji Utsumi about the "new era" for the developer as well as what they're looking at for the future of Virtua Fighter.

With the reveals of new entries for Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi and Streets of Rage, Utsumi says these are part of the "treasure trove" of dormant IP he wanted to see revived and is now finally coming to fruition.

Moreover, he says Sega wants to show their "edginess and rebellious mind-set" that the company was known for in its console days of the '90s, which was pretty apparent in the TGA trailer.

So what does that mean for Virtua Fighter?

Well, Sega is apparently aware of the demand, but they don't sound sure of what direction to really take it next yet.

"We are evaluating right now," said Utsumi. "Virtua Fighter doesn't use so many tricks, special moves like in Street Fighter, it's very realistic. How can we make it more dramatic? It's something we're working on."

Interestingly, this is a similar answer that VF Producer Seiji Aoki gave all the way back in 2021, so it doesn't sound like much concrete progress on a brand new title has been made over the past two years.

In potential opposition to Utsumi's idea, however, Aoki noted that the core would need to make sure that old Virtua Fighter fans who've supported the series for upwards of 30 years would also enjoy a new entry that would live up to their expectations.

So it sounds like Sega may need to walk a bit of a tight rope to try and keep their core VF community pleased as well as make something that can appeal to modern fighting game fans who are less familiar with its intricacies.

Sega did just announce a new version of Virtua Fighter 3tb as the first new release for it in over 20 years, and they of course released Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown in 2021.

It seems pretty clear that Sega hasn't given up on Virtua Fighter by any stretch, but it's also likely going to be multiple more years before we see anything substantial and new from them one way or the other.

We are really glad you have decided to study on our UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design this year. You will start the course on Tuesday September 4th at 9.00 in F34. Enrolment will be on-line from 24th August, and you will hear from student services over the next few weeks about this.

We would like you to get started on making work now, on the tasks set out below, which you should bring with you on the first day, with your equipment. Although this is Induction week, you will start making work this week.

You should now have received your sketch book. If not, get yourself a small A6 book, with a cardboard cover, or make one.

Task 1: Fill it with ideas around the theme ‘Order and Chaos’

Interpret the theme in any way you want, that tells us about your interests and experiences.  You might visit a location- chaotic junk shop/ ordered library; look at family life, different landscapes, document a festival, types of music, events in the news, your working day, public spaces. You might focus on one idea and explore it in an ordered way, or you book might be a chaotic collection of different thoughts.  Whatever you like. Use any methods and techniques to do this- draw using fine liner, paint with watercolour, collage using found objects …….  

RULES

you must fill the book by the first day of term- week beginning 4th September.

you can incorporate photographs, but this should NOT be a photo album.

do not take 6 hours on each page!  Vary the time you spend - 1 hour to 1 minute.

take risks- try something new; make mistakes.

the book should tell us something about you as a person, your interests and experiences

You can also use your Tumblr blog to post 3d, film and photos if you like.

Remember to bring the book on the first day of the course!  It will be the start of work for unit 1.

TASK 2: set up your Tumblr blog 

The UAL Art Foundation Diploma at Derby College is delivered through a number of methods, but central to the programme is the Tumblr blog.  Assignments and tasks will be set on this blog, along with tutorial information, UCAS information and assessment details.

You will also be required to have your own Tumblr blog, which should be set up by the first day of term.  On this, you will post photos and videos of your work and it’s production, evaluate your work daily, and post links to artists research and so on.  Staff can track this on a daily basis and it becomes the keystone to your course.

Please set up your own Tumblr blog.    

1. Set up a Tumblr account and create your own Art Foundation blog.  It should be a new blog for Art Foundation, and NOT your own personal blog.  Call it a name we can recognise as being you.  Have fun designing how your site looks.  There is a tutorial to help you set this up.

I guess that's it for The Game Awards 2022. It's still kind of early in the night. Maybe I'll watch SuperButterBuns' VOD of her reactions. I wonder if Professor Thorgi did a reaction stream.

Anyway, here are my remaining reactions that I let pile up instead of posting as I typed them.

6:47 PM 12/8/2022 Oh. Oh? What's this? Big stage performance with big fantasy staging elements? o Halsey Lilith? So many costumed cloak people and a big demon in the back of the stage? Nice. Ooh. Big architectural thing. O.o Wait. Blizzard? Is this Diablo? Y'know, I never looked into what the story was about in Diablo. Are normal humans travelling into hell? Is hell invading Earth?

6:52 PM 12/8/2022 Best Audio Design. God of War Ragnarok won. I'll be honest: I didn't know who to vote for. But I was so tired of car racing sims and military shooters winning this category, even though I know they do painstakingly gather the realistic sounds. I just wanted some recognition for a fantasy series that has to make up sound effects for creatures that don't exist, magic that doesn't exist, etc. I think that type of creative sound design is much more impressive these days. At least to me.

6:59 PM 12/8/2022 I need to note something. Normally, TGA feels too padded with repetitive trailers, that it feels more like an ad show. But tonight hasn't felt like that at all. Normally, award shows feel so annoying whenever they try to have presenters appear on stage or point out stars in the audience, or especially when they have banter/skits. But none of that has felt annoying to me tonight, astoundingly. I guess it's different---effective when you care about the people taking up the time in the show. Even the devs that I've never heard of, you can feel how important all this recognition is for them. Normally, they get overworked and never recognized. So all of this, this awards show, feels special, whenever the camera turns to them, gives them stage time, gives them a chance to talk, etc. It's nice.

7:09 PM 12/8/2022 Also Keegan Michael Key is doing a comedy skit on stage, and normally I hate those at award shows, but this is nice. Y'know what really helps? This audience is so interactive. The cheering and reactions really help avoid any sense of awkward silence, waiting for jokes to be funny/entertaining. Keeps things flowing. Also the fact that the presenters/banter/skits tonight have been few, but also talking about things I'm actually interested in, when it does get used in the show, really helps. Is toad's mushroom cap a hat?...or not? Hm...???? ^o^ (But also maybe I haven't noticed the banter I'm not interested in, because I'm too busy typing/posting through it. lol)

Both in terms of interesting AI support during gameplay, and for narrative. The protagonist isn't really alone. Angsty, but still emotional support too.

Oh, it's Crash Bandicoot. He did Tweet something yesterday that put everyone on alert. I didn't know they're covering the mascot wearer's face now. Good choice. That was fine for short commercials decades ago, but I don't really want to see a real man's face through Crash's teeth in an awards show's lighting. Because of the circle indentation/patch in Crash's teeth, I can't tell if they covered his human face at the last minute, or if it's purposefully visible as a joke.

But I did a little research for this aspect of the nominees. And there was one game that said it could be played by blind players, and I was just just blown away. THAT is an accessible videogame!
