lee donghyuck x reader ∗ fluff, angst, comfort, royalty!au, criminal!donghyuck, princess!y/n, fem!reader ∗ length: 3,499 words
“princess y/n! a thief has broken into the castle! we must get you to safety first!” your personal prince, jaemin, comes running into your bedroom. you swivel your head towards him from where you’re sat in front of the vanity.
you place your lipstick down and stand up abruptly, almost knocking over all of your beauty products in the process. jaemin walks up to you and gently grabs your hand, leading you towards the door of your bedroom. “but what are we going to do about the thief, knight jaemin?”
he glances over his shoulder as the two of you quietly make your way out of your bedroom and into the vast hallway. you scan the beautiful paintings encased in gold plating as you walk down the hallway, the full moon illuminating the hallway perfectly, your shadows being easily detected. “worry not, princess y/n. knight jeno and I shall track him down and successfully hand him over to the police in no time. now, follow me; I shall show you to the safest room in the entire castle.”
“yes, knight jaemin.” you whisper, now aware of every slight sound the both of your footsteps make in the eerily quiet hallway. it’s surprisingly calm, you note, as you two approach a descending staircase. unbeknownst to you two, however, the thief is in a hidden view, watching every move the two of you make as prince jaemin opens the door for you to the basement.
“this is the basement, one of the safest places in the castle. there are plenty of traps surrounding the door on the inside, so be careful not to set any of them off. now, I will part ways with you here. knight jeno and I will come back for you when the thief has been successfully ridden of.”
you nod, and he sends a bright smile your way. he closes the door behind him, and you turn to face the basement in front of you. it was very neat, considering it’s a basement, but this was the castle we were talking about here, and the maids made sure to clean every inch of the place. you scan the floor, spotting a tripwire trap right in front of your feet, and another one a few feet away from you. you then take some time to scan the walls, not noticing anything out of the particular.
you let out a deep sigh, and as you’re about to step over the tripwire right in front of your feet until you hear a small ‘thunk’ outside the door behind you. your eyes widen, and you quickly swivel around to lock the door behind you. you carefully make your way across the other side of the room, trying to find a place to hide when you hear something heavy drop on the floor outside of the room.
you curse silently to yourself in your head for not bringing your pepper spray with you, but more importantly, not grabbing your sword on the way out of your room. you hear the lock of the door jiggle, and you hastily hide behind one of the wooden boxes.
the door opens and is shut quietly a few seconds after. they lock the door behind themselves, and proceed to disarm the tripwire traps in a matter of seconds. you don’t dare to move as they approach closer and closer to you, but you’re almost relieved when you hear a familiar voice say: “ah, that’s where you were.”
you look up, meeting their dark brown eyes that stood out from their black and white mask. you shakily stand up on your own, refusing the thief’s hand that laid out in front of you. they chuckle at your reaction and clench their hand behind themselves, using the other hand to smoothly remove their mask.
“you again?” you question distastefully, steadying yourself against the box for support.
it was lee donghyuck, the nation’s most wanted criminal for five years now. you were well acquainted with him; in fact, he was your childhood friend since you two were six. things were different now, obviously, with you rising to the throne after your mother had mysteriously disappeared, and donghyuck lowering down into the depths of the shadows. he was quite the skilled thief, apparently, successfully stealing one of the nation’s most prized jewels. he’s gotten close to getting caught, but fortunately for him, he threw a smoke dust grenade at them, and once the smoke had subsided, he had disappeared into thin air.
aside from the other royals, that he’s visited to steal, you were the only royal he visited with the purpose not to steal. this wasn’t the first time he’s come to visit your castle, get your knights all riled up, just to end up finding you and talking to you for a bit. he’s made it clear what his intention is when he visits you, and it’s far from harmful to you or any of your guards.
“run away with me, princess y/n. I know that deep down, you detest anything and everything regarding the royals, so why would you decide to become one?” is what he had said to you the first time he had snuck into your castle, specifically into your bedroom. you were terrified, to say the least, at his sudden presence that night.
“you don’t know anything, donghyuck. leave me and the others be. I don’t know the exact reason as to why you even had the thought to sneak into here tonight, but I would appreciate it if you would leave, and peacefully if I must say.”
that’s just what he did, but before leaving you, he whispered: “I’ll be back, just wait.”
“ah, disappointed to see me?” he asks with a grin on his face, leaning against the wall behind him. you take a glance around the room, not surprised to see all of the traps in the basement disabled. he did this every time, and even if you weren’t located in what was considered a ‘safe spot’ in the castle, he never failed to find you and make his presence known to you.
I’m actually relieved, you thought, but you didn’t want to confess that to him just yet. you narrow your eyes at him, catching the slight bitterness in his response to you. you scoff. “what do you truly want out of me from going this far, donghyuck? what truly motivates you to come and pretend to steal from my castle when in reality, all you do is find me and try to persuade me into running away with you?”
he meets your passionate gaze with his own, gritting his teeth as he takes the rest of his will to even muster up the courage to say the words that come out of his mouth next. “you motivate me, y/n, you’re my motivation in this twisted world. can’t you see that by now? after all of these times that I’ve visited you, have you once thought about why I went through all of that trouble just to see your face? to just talk to you? it’s quite simple, actually.”
you raise an eyebrow, and the room is silent for a matter of minutes as you rack your brain for answers to his question. none pop up, not even as you shamelessly stare at him to possibly light up a light bulb in your mind. “unfortunately, I don’t know why you come all this way just to talk to me. I haven’t thought of it much myself, although if I did, I would probably understand you much more.”
he takes a step towards you and lets out a quiet chuckle at your statement. “probably, but since you cannot figure out the answer by yourself, I’ll just give it to you then: you’re the only person I care about this much in this world, and more importantly, the only person that I have left and that hasn’t been entirely whisked away yet. I won’t go into details just yet into what all of that means, but those are the main reasons as to why I travel all this way just to see you.”
your expression reflects surprise and suspicion, but this is your childhood friend we’re talking about. you’ve known him for years, and not once has he lied to you about an important matter or any thoughts running through his head. you stare deeply into his eyes for quite a while, trying to detect any ounce of a lie in them; however, you cannot detect a trace of dishonesty in his dark brown eyes. “you’re not lying, are you?”
he scoffs, shaking his head side to side to hopefully make the blush on his cheeks dissipate. “y/n, do you really expect me to lie in this type of situation? I have been chased by guards, almost found out twice, mind you, and you think I’m lying?”
“ugh, I don’t know!” you exclaim, proceeding to pace around in the small room. you were too loud, however, and in a matter of minutes, the two of you can hear hurried footsteps coming from all directions. you give donghyuck a worried look, and he can definitely sense your distress from where he’s standing.
he comes speed walking up to you, placing his hands on the sides of your arms. “shit. listen, y/n, I don’t know if I can afford to sneak in here again, after how long I’ve been in this palace for. so, this will be my last time trying to persuade you to come with me, and after this, you’ll never see me again. I would definitely go through everything and more just to see you again, but I don’t know if I have much longer until I’m found out, and for good, this time.”
you can feel the warmth radiating from his hands, and for some reason, his touch makes you shiver. “I- what?” unresolved feelings bubble up in your mind the longer his hands are on you, and it takes all of your will not to go red right then and there.
he smiles at your expression as the footsteps approaching the basement door get louder and louder. “hurry up, princess, you’re running out of time. I can hear footsteps running down the hallway to this room, and if you don’t give me an answer soon, the both of us might just get caught.”
you take one last glance at the basement door, hearing the hurried footsteps coming closer and closer as the time ticks by. You look up at donghyuck, seeing his raised eyebrow as he waits for your answer. you give him a nod, all the memories of the castle rushing through your head as you quietly answer with: “let’s go.”
he genuinely smiles at your response, although he has a tiny hint of surprise in his expression. “as you wish, princess.” he whispers, speedily putting on his mask. as the door is banged down from the knights on the other side, donghyuck wraps an arm around your waist and you two spring into the air, and then into the air ducts of the palace.
you can hear the guards underneath you guys scrambling to find you and donghyuck, and eventually, they leave the room to go look somewhere else. once it becomes quiet enough for you two to talk, you let out a sigh. “holy crap, that was scary.” you whisper, fixing your disheveled hair as he gives you a grin.
“exhilarating, right? now, follow me.” he says as he starts to crawl towards the left of the air duct. you do so as well, trying to keep up with how fast he’s going. he’s definitely used to doing this, you thought, and you wonder how many times he’s had to do this. you close your eyes and shake your head. you could never go through doing this as much as he has.
he glances back at you every so often, and you try your best not to complain about how small of a space you’re in right now, but you can’t help yourself. “ugh, it’s so small in here. how farther do we have to go?”
“depends on where you’re heading to. we’re heading towards the entrance, so it’ll be around ten minutes until we get there.” he responds back, stopping to glance at his map before taking a sharp right. you follow closely behind, accidentally bumping into his back sometimes, which you would mutter a small “sorry” while he would just let out a chuckle whenever you did so.
you don’t know how long it’s been since you two have entered the air ducts, but it feels like forever as your fingernails scrap the metal underneath you, making you internally scream at the uncomfortable feeling. it seems like donghyuck can sense that, because in a matter of seconds, he says: “y/n, we’re here.”
you suddenly halt behind him, peeking over his shoulder to see, in fact, the end of the air duct that lead to the outside. “finally.” you whisper back, carefully watching as he grabs a screwdriver from his pockets and loosens the screws holding the screen. before removing the screen, he peeks through it and, not seeing any guards, he removes the screen carefully and steps out into the garden, helping you out as well. he screws the screen back quickly and you help him set it back in place.
fortunately, there are no guards out here, all of them patrolling the castle to find you and the thief. you stand up and stretch for a minute, relishing in the cool air that hits your skin at the stroke of midnight. donghyuck glances around the garden, spotting a particular bush in the corner that catches his attention.
“alright, y/n. follow me,” he insists, taking a step before stopping in his tracks. he swirls around to face you, getting a full look of your lavish appearance and confused expression. “wait, we need to disguise you real quick. here, take my jacket, it’ll make you look a little poorer. mess up your hair a little bit, add some dirt to your face, and you’ll look like an ordinary homeless person here!”
you give him a deadpan expression as he ruffles your perfectly styled hair. “there’s no way I’m putting dirt on my face, donghyuck. your jacket will cover my face enough, so let’s get out of here already.”
he smirks at your assertion. “ah, that’s the y/n I know and love. alright, let’s get out of here for good, then. follow closely behind me, okay?” you roll your eyes, but you follow him closely nonetheless.
he leads you to a bush in the right corner of your palace’s garden, and when you look carefully at it, you can faintly see a part of it trimmed off. “is-is this how you sneak into the palace?” you murmur, gawking at the idea of how dirty your outfit will probably get in the process.
“unfortunately, yes. if I tried to sneak in anywhere else around the palace, it would look even more suspicious than this. knowing you, you’ll probably hate this, so just bear with me for a bit, okay?” he pauses, giving you a glance before you nod at him. “good. I’ll peak my head out to see if anybody is out there, and if I give you a thumbs up with my other hand, that means it’s all clear to go. if I give you a thumbs down, that means that it’s not clear to go. we have to move fast though, okay?”
you gulp as you plant your hands on the ground beside you to crouch down to donghyuck’s level. “got it.” you whisper, watching as he flashes a reassuring smile your way before he faces towards the bush again, using his right hand to move a part of the shrubbery aside. he takes his time to place his head inside the hole of the bush, not wanting to attract any attention from the outside world.
he takes a few minutes to glance around, and, not detecting anyone of authority outside, he gives you a thumbs up with his left hand, making you clutch onto his hand as he quickly moves the two of you through the bush and into the town outside of your palace. he places a hand around your waist, gently leading you away from the entrance of where you resided. when the two of you are into a more secretive place, like an alley, he removes his mask and stuffs it into his leather crossbody bag.
“we’re finally out of there. how does it feel, princess?” he breathes out, wiping the sweat away from his brow as he gets a good look at you; your outfit is certainly dirty, your hair looks horrendous, and the lipstick you had on your lips is all smudged.
“it feels… different. I’ve been out of the palace before, obviously, but not with the intent of running away. what do you have planned next for my escape, donghyuck?”
"my next plan is to find a carriage driver to drive us back to my town, named Apoia. it's quite a few hours away, unfortunately, so it would be wise of you to take a nice nap on the way there, considering that it's around, what? one AM?" he states, finding a neat spot to sit on. he glances to his left and right, patting the spot to his left, which you walk over and sit comfortably beside him.
you check your watch, confirming that it's past one AM. "yup, you're right. we should probably get going, though. the guards are on high alert knowing there's a thief around, and especially because I've gone missing."
he snickers, using his right hand to shake any dirt out of his hair. "yeah, we should get going. I'm just resting for a couple of minutes until we continue our adventure... y/n, you should fix your hair up since I messed it up earlier. here, take my handkerchief and clean yourself up, then once you’re done, we’ll get going.”
he hands you his light blue handkerchief, and you take it into your hands before he hands you his light blue handkerchief, and you take it into your hands before wiping your face down with it. while you’re at it, you flatten down your hair with your hands and attempt to run your fingers through it, which doesn’t seem to work that well, unfortunately. you accept the fact that you’ll have to walk around with this messy hair, and hand donghyuck’s handkerchief back to him.
“I’m ready, donghyuck. let’s get out of here, and for good, this time.” you declare, hearing him stand up suddenly beside you. he reaches his hand out to help you up, and this time, you willingly grab it, allowing him to help lift you up from off the ground.
“you stole the words right out of my mouth, princess. let’s leave, once and for all.” you grin as you squeeze his hand before letting go, making him internally groan at the loss of warmth from your hand. he distracts himself from peaking out from the alley, luckily catching sight of a carriage driver waiting for someone to come along. he glances back at you, not expecting your face to be so close to his that he almost trips over nothing. “l-let’s go.” he murmurs, nodding towards the carriage driver a few feet away.
the two of you approach the carriage driver, and while donghyuck is trying to haggle a good price for the ride, you study the surroundings around you. dark brown houses were placed on both sides of the road to your left, and the road stretched out for many miles, until you reached a certain point, of course, then you had to travel by boat to get to particular towns. you’re brought out of your daydreaming when donghyuck nudges you and says: “y/n, we’re about to leave. I’ll help you into the carriage.”
you allow him to help you into the carriage, his hand resting on the small of your back lingers as he moves past you, sitting down on the seat in front of you. the carriage driver shuts the door behind you two guys, and hastily makes his way to the front of the carriage. in a matter of minutes, you can hear the sound of a whip, horses neighing, and the bumps of the rocks under the carriage as the vehicle starts moving.
“it’ll be a while, y/n, so it’d be best to start sleeping now. I know you probably have a lot of questions for me, like I do for you as well, but for now, we’ll wait until we get back to my place. I’ll wake you up when we get there.” he barely hides a chuckle as he hears you yawn and sees your eyes droop down.
I hope I made the right decision leaving with him, you thought, before drifting off to sleep.
