#that's just my general welsh tag don't mind me
favourite or most interesting wenglish quirks non-welsh people might not know about?
I have no idea what people would be likely to know about or not, so I'm just going to list a bunch, I think.
Inversion! I.e the thing Yoda does! Welsh allows a degree of syntactic fluidity for emphasis, and Wenglish carries this over. "Look at Boris Johnson. An absolute clown, that man is." "I saw EEAAO on the weekend! Magical, it was, just brilliant." This one sometimes can sound almost... wrong, actually, when used by an actual Welsh speaker. A totally normal sentence I have heard my husband say is "So cute, the cat!" instead of "The cat is so cute!" He once looked at a Pomeranian and said to me "So small, the dog!"
Doubling up on the verb to be! Similar to 'innit', but... more. "I'm going to give him a piece of my mind, I am." "He's all tired out, he is." She's been on the go all day, she has." Sometimes this becomes inversion if the speaker drops the first part. So, that last one might be "Been on the go all day, she has."
Double dipping with adjectives! Specifically, adjectives that mean the same thing. English, being a Frankenstinian mash up of eight others, has a much bigger vocabulary than Welsh, and Welsh speakers in the 1700s being forced to assimilate were fascinated by it. So "There he goes, driving around in his big huge car" - a totally normal and not redundant description in Wenglish.
Double dipping with nouns! Same reason. "Whose coat is that jacket?" "Whose shoes are those boots?"
The negative question! I love this one. When asking a shopkeeper, you might say "Have you got any milk?" Not in Wenglish! In Wenglish you say "You haven't got any milk, have you?" (Grammatically, the correct answer to that is probably "Why, don't you want any?", but in reality the answer is "Yes we do" and that's linguistically correct.) Something something Welsh people expect to be disappointed something something.
Expanded words! 'Where' is usually 'where to'. "Where to am I going?" "Where to am I taking the kids?" "Where to have you put Mam Gu's medicine?" Sometimes it can be 'where by', "Where by does she live in Cardiff?"
'Do' gets added in before verbs in some parts of the south east. This comes from a method of Welsh verb shortening, actually. 'Cerddais i' means 'I walked' - 'nes i gerdded' means the same thing, but literally is 'I did walk'. And that's how they roll in Abertillery! "Whenever I go to town I do buy a cake." "Gareth do play rugby on the weekend". (For clarity's sake, that last one would otherwise be 'Gareth plays rugby on the weekend.')
'Look' and 'see' as verbal tags! Used at the end of a sentence for emphasis. "He's done fucked it up, look." "It's easier not to bother, see."
And a whole bunch of Welsh loanwords that get sprinkled in. Plus some English ones that we liked and used indiscriminately; the biggest and best example of that is 'tidy', which is the most overworked word in all of Wenglish. How much did you sell your car for? A tidy amount. Did she hand in the wallet she found? Yeah, she's tidy. How was your blind date? Tidy, yeah, might go for a second with him. Did you enjoy your meal? It was tidy, yeah.
Welsh ones:
Dwt (n) or dwti (adj). Very tiny. "He's a dwt of a boy." "Look at the kittens! I love the little dwti one."
Cwtch, my beloved. Best word. Closest English analogue is 'hug', which we also use, but a cwtch has connotations of being a little fluffy animal tucked cozy and safe into a comfy little space all happy and warm. Can be a noun (a cwtch), a verb (cwtch him up all nice) or an adjective (I love this room, it's cwtchy). There is safety, security and comfort to a cwtch. Lesser used, but it also applies to a method of wrapping your baby into your arm with a shawl (traditional Welsh childcare method: baby stays warm, your arm doesn't get tired, and you keep one hand free), and the small cupboard under the stairs.
Bach - small. Used as a term of endearment. "How are you, bach?" Generally used by someone older to someone younger.
Byt/byti - mate. Possibly where the American English 'buddy' comes from. Used like bach, but between peers rather than older to younger.
Titles. Especially for grandparents! We're still recovering from the lost generation of the seventies and eighties, so it's not uncommon for people to have Welsh speaking grandparents who didn't pass on the language but use the titles. Mam-gu and Tad-cu in the south (abbreviated to Gu and Cu), Nain and Taid in the north. But also Mam instead of Mum.
That's all I can think of offhand, anyway! There will definitely be more.

"I need some air. The stupidity in here is making me feel faint."
Kim Pine RP and general Scott Pilgrim fandom blog; Asks always open (unless they get flooded, I suppose)
[Current Event: GAME OVER! RESTART...?]
Blog should be running on central time, I think, but I sleep at weird hours anyway.
Generally asking that you just be decent people, or make your asks exaggerated/obviously part of the bit you're building if you're going a certain direction. If I catch even a whiff of genuine bigotry, though, you're out pal.
NSFW asks tentatively allowed (until someone is a freak about it) [I need to clarify now that I mean this within the rp context: I will field nonRP NSFW asks without complaint. Stop. Bothering. The. Minors.]
Generally fine running separate continuities for Kim, you just need to specify, otherwise I'm working with my current amalgam of canon Kim stuff + blog canon (like anon shenanigans and stuff) (Bonus points if you can name our tag for me)
Theoretical fine with ship interactions, especially gay ones, but DO NOT ENGAGE ME IN THIS MANNER IF YOU ARE A MINOR! Thank you!
Characters I'm not interested in fielding ship content for: Lucas Lee, Hollie Hawkes*, Jason Kim*, basically any evil ex (aside from Roxie,,, maybe Patel,,,) Julie (...?)
Probably more but I don't expect it to be an issue, really- I don't think I've seen blogs for many of these or other characters
*nothing beyond acknowledging canon for Jason, theoretical cool with Hollie actually, it'd just need to be in a specific font, like some of the ones I am fine with but haven't specified- notably, with an understanding that as I write Kim, she could have feelings for Hollie, but after Jason has no interest in pursuing that (so for SPTO or pre-Jason stuff, specify and I'll consider!)

OOC
Hi, welcome to the blog! When addressing me, just call me Pine; if you want to call me Pine in a RP ask, just note that somehow so I understand. I am 23, so please keep this in mind when interacting! My ooc tags are ooc, txt, and art (which I post my art under, obviously, so it may feature RP stuff.) OOC is sort of the catch-all?
I have an AO3 where you can see what fics I'm working on/have written.
Here's various versions of the media and how Hinged I am about them (answer: not very)
Movie: Least favorite Scott/iteration in general; fuck does it have some good lines though. Damnit. (I really do like a lot of aspects of it, but it IS my least favorite.)
Comics: 2 rereads down, favorite version; currently collecting panels for those with requests or questions relative to them (Starting 6 eventually)
Show: Watched twice in full, halfway through a third run! Real contender for favorite version (also, begging for a "They Dated" extended cut from someone please)
Game: Very fun actually! Didn't know I could be good at this type of game; I have notes on most of the item stats for anyone that needs them- gonna start labeling every instance of the named NPCs eventually

Okay well I watched the first episode of Blood Origin and honestly my thoughts are:
I just don't understand why people are so resistant to changes/new plotlines/some lore breaking of *recent* franchises but gobble it up when it's older. People telling an untold portion of a common tale is well established in storytelling culture. The first example that springs to mind is Lancelot, who straight up does not exist in original Authorian legend and was a FRENCH invention when the myth spread. Nowadays, most casual enjoyers of King Author stuff don't bat an eye to Lancelot's presence. Lancelot, who comes to mind, because Sapkowski writes said Lancelot to be in love with Ciri, and we're totally cool with *that* but not with changes to Sapkowski's work.
It's really telling that there's such a bigoted negative reaction to this because honestly? The black people so far have been BLACK black, darker than me, darker than even my black family sometimes. I'm enjoying seeing melanin in fantasy don't mind me. And the hair on the sisters is excellent, I'm liking the costuming, and I *really* like Eile.
The accents are kind of all over the place. Both as individual characters but also as the actors themselves. Sometimes Fjall goes from generic American accent to some form of fake Irish to ????european???? and back and it's distracting and weird. HOWEVER I do like the Irish and Welsh accents in high born kingdoms, because too often those accents are for commoners and poverty only, and this sort of turns the trope on its head.
I'm not sure how much I like the pan-Asian vibe I'm getting from some of the props and architecture. Some things look vaguely Chinese while others solidly Arabic while others a weird fusion of Indian and Korean and it's just odd to me. At first I thought it was because of clan structures but then I saw that it's just sort of everywhere. I have 0% Asian in me so I'm not really a good authority to speak on it but it's a weird vibe, a little Orientalist to my eyes. I'll freely admit that I like the aesthetic since I was raised pretty pan-African but I recognize that most continentally grouped cultures don't love that and it's mainly the black diaspora that's embraced it because we don't really have much of a choice.
I STILL feel that doing away with this short-season "but the episodes are an hour long!" nonsense would help pacing so much. Literally every time I thought the episode was going to come to an end, it's been roughly at the 20-25 min mark, which a standard TV episode would have been ANYWAY. So there's not really much point to having this be 4 hour-long episodes when it could be done better as 12-15 20 minute episodes... which would be the eqivilant of a short season while 24-32 is a more "standard" season (instead of 8 hour-long episodes). It gives you more time to flesh the characters and plotlines out while also allowing you the chance to trim some of the long-and-boring content people get tired of watching.
I really do feel bitter that the witcher tags continue to be people making racist and misogynistic memes instead of a fandom happily discussing a pretty strong first episode that introduced a billion fantasy characters of color. It really sucks that black people in fantasy is received so poorly when my inner 10 year old is happy to see people who look more like me having fun with the genre. I long for the day when I can exist in a fandom space and happily discuss my favorite black characters without having to justify their existence every 2 seconds.
Oof that CGI is pretty rough though. Which surprises me because the S2 CGI was not this rough so idk what happened here. That monster in the first episode is, uh, bad. And the background in the weird magicky place is also pretty, uh, bad.
I don't understand why the first witcher being an elf would piss Geralt off except maybe because that means Jaskier knows more about witchers than Geralt does? All of Geralt's iterations- the books, the games, the show, the comics- are pretty chill with elves as long as they're pretty chill with him. He only pursues certain elves and elf-blooded mixed race people when they pose a direct threat to him or his loved ones. Same as humans. So I don't really get that line at all unless, as said, it was more a "wow Geralt's gunna be pissed that I know this story and he doesn't"

being british is not "a fast track to being not decent". if you're not living in britain then your perception is being altered by the fact that the only ones you ever fucking see on screen were born into the 0.1%.
also how did you miss the entire point of that post, the point is that any english actor allowed to have any kind of career these days is the opposite of representative of the majority of citizens. hopefully you're just a kid but if not jesus christ learn to fucking read
i was going to start this with the traditional pleasantries but it seems my general use of sarcasm (humorous or otherwise) on this main for the past 3+ years is lost on you (even though i am trying to give you the benefit of the doubt by saying that you're coming across me for the first time), so let me make it very clear: my ancestors were f*cking enslaved by the UK. there are ancestors that haven't been confirmed except through word of mouth that were most likely f*cked over by the UK in various ways. i think then, in this circumstance, that i have the right to say that the British government in general has done f*cking horrible things. the British themselves have done f*cking horrible things. i am not talking about individual people on the streets and in the countryside just trying to live their lives, i am talking about the entire f*cking system that enables sh*t like this. the British system is not decent. not at all, and if you're steeped in that like a mf*cking teabag for God knows how long, i've found it hard to discover exceptions to the societal bedrock that is racism, classism and white jackassery since we're talking about the same place that, despite giving us Shakespeare and Rickman and Princess Diana (landed gentry aside) also gave us Churchill (took the UK through WWII but engineered a f*cking famine in India bc according to him they 'breed like rabbits'), the f*cking Fiennes clan (Ralph is a JKR supporter), and Charles and Andrew and the rest of the royal f*cking family, so if that isn't a fast track to being not decent then idk what is.
that being said, sure, as cynical of a bitch that i am maybe my perception is less than ideal bc of the 0.1%, but if all of the f*cking people in charge are part of the 0.1% then how tf do you expect me to say otherwise, exactly? the reason there isn't representation is bc the industry sucks ass, which is why the only actors i'm interested in are Welsh and Irish and Scottish—the status quo rn is not concerned with allowing people with a regular 'English' background to have their time on screen, let alone LGBTQ+ and POC. and so yes, the nepo babies are going to continue to have a career, even if they act worse than f*cking paint on a drywall, and the cycle will start all over again, and we can forget about having a f*cking accurate portrayal of the average citizen any time soon, and this goes for the British film industry and Hollywood and Bollywood—contrary to your belief, i am privileged enough to have been able to learn in such a way that i was able to pick up the necessary comprehension skills needed to function meaningfully in this society without being disenfranchised. (PSA: others, i know, have not been able to. that does not make them worth any less.) i didn't know, however, that i was supposed to write an entire essay in the f*cking tags??? to explain that i did, in fact, comprehend??? and to reiterate what was already f*cking there??? i'm sorry??? just bc i chose not to address the aforementioned info and instead indirectly acknowledged that it was correct by emphazing what i did doesn't mean i didn't see it—i literally put a qualifier for the first point you brought up (something like '... if the ancestors minded their f*cking business #and lived their lives like normal human beings'). generational tendencies and traits are a thing, that's why we have a whole subset of American citizens who still think it's alright to use the f*cking N word to refer to Black people
look, i really don't know what side of the bed you woke up on and i'm sorry you felt the need to come into my inbox and bitch about this, but i hope you felt better after sending this and didn't put any of this toxicity into anyone else's space, OK? ty <333

Mox(ter) reporting. Some things you might want to know. Or not ┐(´ー`)┌
Things that keep me up at night: The camaraderie of the Autobots in Armada. Japanese punk and rock artists hitting Rs with that guttural growl. Trying to make up transforming figures in my head that don't exist for certain characters and getting pissed the next morning because I don't have them. Only thing stopping me is lack of access to a resin printer.
I am Mox/Moxter and have been a bot nerd since I was an anklebiter. Mostly gung-ho about other stuff like practical effects, costuming, figures/models, 3D modelling, old tech, lizards, and birding. I do art a little too, but I’m not too fond of the idea of putting it out on here quite yet. I mainly study tech communications, visual effects, and language. Couple years of Spanish but also picking up and learning bits of Japanese and Welsh when I can. I apologize beforehand if you see my dumb ass getting long-winded about Tailgate (full reason being too long to explain here).
I’m generally invested into anything related to toy design— mostly TakaraTomy, HasTak, and Sunrise bot stuff is my focus though. I am hooked on the design development surrounding Binaltech and Alternators for better or worse. And wouldn't you know, a bunch of car robots helped me to realize what I should re-prioritize my career track to be; that's the power of my dumb special interest at work
( •̀ .̫ •́ )✧.
Got tired of updating which music artists I like at the moment, but I tend to stick to ELO, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, hip hop, rock, J-punk, ska, funk, and EDM. I don’t mind getting music recs. Delighted owner to my little shit of a gecko. A lot of what I reblog is aesthetic posts, robotic nonsense, and other things. If you want to go ahead and block some of my tags, I’ve got a list of them linked in my pinned post. I try to put alt tags in the majority of images I upload. May need a poke on that though once in a while because I can’t remember everything.
Tumblr media
There will sometimes be 18+ content. It will be tagged or marked under community labels as such. I don’t want complaining when the tools are right there to prune out stuff. Block the tags, block me, or go on your own way.
I have an affinity for and somehow keep crushing on turbonerd robots in STEM and medicine.

It keeps happening.
Ok, but like, Archadis and Airazor too. Birdman, birdwoman? Man, I don’t care... I’m just bi and giddy. If you get bothered by that kind of thing, I will probably piss you off. r/transformers or some specialty forum like Seibertron is probably more your speed.
Don’t be stupidly obnoxious around here; shit-stirrers get Gorg'd:

If you slander bugs, reconsider.
Please do not ask me my pronouns. Like, sorry man, but I don’t know you. At least talk to me for a good while and wait before asking? Just use my name and no they/them-ing me if we aren't all too familiar, that's all I ask.

Name Meanings in Severance
Some of these are obvious, but I love name meanings and similar so posting for posterity...
Kier means dark and Eagan means fire, so if you were unsure if he was literally Satan before, be certain.
On a similar note, Lumon means light, Helena means shining light, and Lucifer means 'lightbearer'. On a related but hopefully less Luciferian note, Eleanor, the name of Devon's baby, is a variant form of Helena. Helly's (fake?) last name of Riggs evokes a "rigged system" or game to me.
Mark is named more for the sense of being the "target" of a scam or con, and his last name Scout is obviously evocative of investigation. I think his sister Devon was named more for the unisex tomboyish vibes then any deep meaning. Same with Ricken- his name has that too special/slightly fake quality that suits his vibes, though Hale can mean both "healthy" or "hollow".
Dylan and Irving were probably named more for vibes than meaning as well- Dylan has a very youthful vibe, especially when contrasted with an old fashioned name like Irving. But they do have interesting contrasts in their name meanings- Dylan relates to the Welsh god of the sea (hunting eels anyone?) while Irving means fresh water. Their last names, George and Bailiff, don't seem to have any special significance, meaning farmer and, well, bailiff/officer/manager.
Burt is another light themed name, meaning bright. His last name, Goodman, has an obvious meaning.
Harmony has an obvious meaning, that in context evokes balancing the four humors in the Kier cult. Cobel, meaning rock or famous, sounds very similar to the mythical creature called a kobold or kobalos, which is a sort of hobgoblin or household spirit with an ambivalent nature. Her fake last name of Selvig means seal-cove and evokes selkies, shapeshifting seals who can remove their skin to appear as a woman and marry.
I think Milchick is another vibe name. It just sounds like a substitute teacher or something. It means milk. Same with Graner- the name just sounds kind of scary.
Peter means rock, and Kilmer was a potter's surname, relating to kilns, but while Petey might be meant to evoke a foundation for the start of Mark's journey to the truth, I think Kilmer relates more to Petey being killed then anything else.
There's a few interesting meanings in the Eagan CEO names: Ambrose means honey or sweet. Myrtle is a tree sacred to Venus, sometimes identified with Lucifer as the morning star. Baird means poet. Gerhardt means brave. Phillip means lover of horses, while Pip mean a small seed, and is the name of several variants of apples. Leonora is another variant of Helena/Eleanor, and Jame is an unusual version of James meaning usurper.
Gemma means gem, something precious, and Casey means watchful.
Finally, Angelo obviously means angel, and his wife Gabriela was named for the angel Gabriel, meaning strength of God.
EDIT TO ADD: The closest meaning I could find for Reghabi is open minded and generous!

Insane Thoughts About Les Mis Below
What I truly cannot get over is the absolute perfect blending of the universal and the specific. Like Hugo does this in a lot of his other works, notably Hunchback, but Les Mis is truly a masterpiece in that regard.
Because it is a profoundly universal story, whose theme resonate across time and culture! It's the story of souls seeking salvation, it's a question about what good and evil are, it's an exploration of morality and nurture vs. nature. You can retell it and readapt it easily because the core narrative around which everything hangs- a man is shown mercy upon his release from prison and tries to redeem himself for his past crimes but can never outrun them, and through his efforts causes a series of coincidences that deeply impact his life and the lives of those around him- that's a good story! If I fleshed out that one sentence summary with more plot points, you could still strip them down and reskin them while keeping the outline recognizable, you can shift the characters between context, because it's just a really strong narrative with compelling character conflicts! Further, it's rebuttal of the "great men of history" narrative is STILL one of the strongest- it so perfectly explores how characters are shaped by circumstance, rather than innate traits, and that circumstance likewise is not earned by goodness- but neither is it totally random- but is rather the sum total of many many decisions made by EVERYONE, and that even the smallest and most inconsequential lives can have huge impacts, and that you shouldn't judge others because you don't know their story.
But by that same token- it is SUCH a specific story!! There is a reason it was written at the time it was written and set in the decades of was set- the fact that Valjean went to prison during the reign of Louis XVI and came out AFTER the defeat of Napoleon- understanding just how much the world changed is critical to understanding his character! The unprecedented social mobility of the period is PLOT CRITICAL- multiple character make and lose fortunes multiple times in the span of two decades, the industrial revolution is both necessary for the plot and deeply symbolic (THE FUCKING JET MAKING PROCESS STILL MAKES ME INSANE), nevermind the climactic very specific political conflict at the end of the novel, nevermind the incredibly context specific jokes and references throughout the novel, nevermind the literal ESSAYS on Waterloo, convents, and sewers which are symbolic but also so so SO specific! Aah!! Screaming!!
Truly, you can adapt Les Mis endlessly, and I think it will be a story told for centuries- maybe even a millenia- because the characters and the core themes they are used to explore are so deeply resonant. But you can never completely "lift and shift" the story and characters to a new setting- you will ALWAYS lose nuance in the process- because they are so deeply entwined with the setting and it's history and with each other- and I think that's beautiful.

Long Post of Marius Being Awesome and Respected by Les Amis and Generally Well Liked by Enjolras Because the Jokes Are Truly Getting Old By Now
Enjolras trusted Marius with Revolutionary Matters:
"At the Barrière du Maine there are marble-workers, painters, and journeymen in the studios of sculptors. They are an enthusiastic family, but liable to cool off... There is urgent need that some one should go and talk with them a little, but with firmness. They meet at Richefeu’s. They are to be found there between twelve and one o’clock. Those ashes must be fanned into a glow. For that errand I had counted on that abstracted Marius, who is a good fellow on the whole, but he no longer comes to us. I need some one for the Barrière du Maine. I have no one.”
Marius saves Courfeyrac and Gavroche with good marksmanship:
Before the bayonet had touched Gavroche, the gun slipped from the soldier’s grasp, a bullet had struck the municipal guardsman in the centre of the forehead, and he fell over on his back. A second bullet struck the other guard, who had assaulted Courfeyrac in the breast, and laid him low on the pavement.
This was the work of Marius, who had just entered the barricade.
Marius, still concealed in the turn of the Rue Mondétour, had witnessed, shuddering and irresolute, the first phase of the combat. But he had not long been able to resist that mysterious and sovereign vertigo which may be designated as the call of the abyss. In the presence of the imminence of the peril, in the presence of the death of M. Mabeuf, that melancholy enigma, in the presence of Bahorel killed, and Courfeyrac shouting: “Follow me!” of that child threatened, of his friends to succor or to avenge, all hesitation had vanished, and he had flung himself into the conflict, his two pistols in hand. With his first shot he had saved Gavroche, and with the second delivered Courfeyrac.
Marius saves the Barricade:
Marius had entered the tap-room, and had seized the barrel of powder, then he had taken advantage of the smoke, and the sort of obscure mist which filled the entrenched enclosure, to glide along the barricade as far as that cage of paving-stones where the torch was fixed. To tear it from the torch, to replace it by the barrel of powder, to thrust the pile of stones under the barrel, which was instantly staved in, with a sort of horrible obedience,—all this had cost Marius but the time necessary to stoop and rise again; and now all, National Guards, Municipal Guards, officers, soldiers, huddled at the other extremity of the barricade, gazed stupidly at him, as he stood with his foot on the stones, his torch in his hand, his haughty face illuminated by a fatal resolution, drooping the flame of the torch towards that redoubtable pile where they could make out the broken barrel of powder, and giving vent to that startling cry:—
“Be off with you, or I’ll blow up the barricade!”
Marius on that barricade after the octogenarian was the vision of the young revolution after the apparition of the old.
“Blow up the barricade!” said a sergeant, “and yourself with it!”
Marius retorted: “And myself also.”
And he dropped the torch towards the barrel of powder.
But there was no longer any one on the barrier. The assailants, abandoning their dead and wounded, flowed back pell-mell and in disorder towards the extremity of the street, and there were again lost in the night. It was a headlong flight.
The barricade was free.
Everyone likes Marius, he's respected as a leader:
All flocked around Marius. Courfeyrac flung himself on his neck.
“Here you are!”
“What luck!” said Combeferre.
“You came in opportunely!” ejaculated Bossuet.
“If it had not been for you, I should have been dead!” began Courfeyrac again.
“If it had not been for you, I should have been gobbled up!” added Gavroche.
Marius asked:—
“Where is the chief?”
“You are he!” said Enjolras.
Marius is considered a leader:
Marius, fasting, fevered, having emerged in succession from all hope, and having been stranded in grief, the most sombre of shipwrecks, and saturated with violent emotions and conscious that the end was near, had plunged deeper and deeper into that visionary stupor which always precedes the fatal hour voluntarily accepted.
...He looked on at everything as from without; as we have said, things which passed before him seemed far away; he made out the whole, but did not perceive the details. He beheld men going and coming as through a flame. He heard voices speaking as at the bottom of an abyss.
But this moved him. There was in this scene a point which pierced and roused even him. He had but one idea now, to die; and he did not wish to be turned aside from it, but he reflected, in his gloomy somnambulism, that while destroying himself, he was not prohibited from saving some one else.

God House and Wilson really were "It's rotten work" "Not to me. Not if it's you" AND "It's rotten work" "Especially for me. Especially if it's you" simultaneously.

My #1 post of 2022
HAVE YOU READ THIS BOOK??
Saw a post about "formative gay books from your youth" which set off my third fruitless quest for a YA novel I read once when I was like 12 and has lived rent free in my head ever since. Objectively, as an adult, when I reflect on the scenes it burned into my neurons, I acknowledge it was probably not that great. But it made 12 year old me have insanely complicated feelings and it's MADDENING I can find no trace of this novel.
I've searched several times over the years, and just tonight spent an hour going through Amazon, WorldCat, Google Books, Goodreads, and like three other book search databases to no avail. My last hope is that someone on Tumblr has also read this novel and recognizes it.
If any of the below ring a bell, PLEASE let me know!
Young adult novel published prior to 2008
Set in a Houston art school. I might be having false memories that it was specifically the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
Centered around two boys- an extremely shy visual artist and a very confident but secretly depressed writer.
Very shy boy might've had selective mutism? Definitely had a strained relationship with his family
At the beginning of the novel, shy boy has to submit a portrait for admission to school. He initially draws a caricature of himself wearing art like armor, but his mom laughs at him and tells him he misunderstood the instructions and he was supposed to write a personal essay. Shy boy struggles with this.
There was a weirdly vivid metaphor about social anxiety being like being eaten by wolves? There was also a very vivid description of being a puppet or marionette.
There was a conflict over shy boy wanting to do cartooning but having to learn painting instead?
He was initially intimidated by confident boy, but confident boy sees his cartoons and really likes them
As they get closer confident boy opens up about feeling crushed by pressure and expectations of others, conflict with his family as well? He may have been self-harming?
They keep their friendship a secret and it's either extremely homoerotic or confident boy was explicitly gay. I do not remember clearly. It gets very intense and shy boy is conflicted and uncomfortable about the secrets he's keeping.
At the end of the book, confident boy kills himself in a way that looks like a tragic accident. He intentionally overdoses on medication that induces a heart attack, but injects into a healing injury on his arm so there's no puncture marks. He leaves a suicide note for shy boy, encouraging him to be himself and be a great artist, but to tell no one confident boy killed himself because he doesn't want his family to be upset?
Shy boy is traumatized and initially keeps the secret, but at the end of the book opens up to... Someone. One of the teachers? It ends on a bittersweet but hopeful note that now shy boy is opening up and is forming healthier relationships.
As an adult, this summary sounds rather maudlin, but I remember being really struck by the writing style as a kid, especially the imagery and descriptions. I just feel crazy that this book really affected middle school me and then seemingly disappeared into the ether. If you have any idea what I'm talking about, PLEASE let me know!

So, I figured I could maybe do one of these intro posts as well ...
About me :)
That's me:
My name is Alexandra, I'm female and mainly use she/her pronouns, however I think I'm also okay with they/them.
I'm legally an adult, even though I still often can't quite believe that yet (my exact age is in my bio because I would probably forget to update it in this post).
I speak German and English fluently, I also know a little Spanish. I have an interest in learning new languages, so far I've started to learn tiny bits of Russian, Japanese, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh!
~~~
My blog:
I originally made this blog mainly to post my art, however over time it turned a bit more into a selfship blog. Nowadays I post/reblog mostly selfship art and imagines/writing, but also "regular" stuff from fandoms that I like, and occasionally just some random memes or cute/funny things.
Some fandoms I'm in (more or less, I'm usually not super active in the sense that I engage a lot with other people - I'm sometimes kinda shy to approach/interact with new people - , but I enjoy these franchises): Star Wars, Hogan's Heroes, Phineas and Ferb, Warrior Cats, Pirates of the Caribbean, various cartoons and animated series (Gravity Falls, Amphibia, Trollhunters, The Dragon Prince, The Penguins of Madagascar, ...) and probably some more that I'm currently forgetting about xD Feel free to ask about them!
I selfship mainly for fun and for comfort, to me it's a kind of selfcare/selflove. I generally feel comfortable with sharing f/os, especially the ones that I'm not very focused at right now. However, I might not interact much with someone who has headcanons about them that heavily contradict with mine or just makes me somehow uncomfortable. Otherwise feel free to interact so we can gush about them together^^
You are allowed to reblog everything unless stated otherwise!
~~~
Tags I use to keep my blog organised (or at least attempt to):
#selniasart - my own art
#selniaswriting - my own writing, will probably be mostly x reader stories, headcanons or f/o imagines
#selniasoriginal - any other form of original content that doesn't fit into the categories above (memes etc.), basically anything that's not a reblog
#others' creations - art or writing made by other people
#asks for selnia - as the name says, any asks that I get
In theory I also have tags for my main f/os (mentioned in the f/o section), however I'm really not sure yet if I'm going to use them consistently or just stick to the character's names.
Also just fyi I started implementing my tagging system in February 2023, so most things before that (except my art) are unfortunately not tagged systematically!
~~~
Self shipping:
I have made a carrd for any information related to my self ships. This includes an overview of my fictional others, a short description of my self-inserts, as well as an introduction to their relationships. I have only started making it in summer 2023, and it's still a work in progress as more info will be added over time.
My self-insert is usually called Selina (or variations thereof, like Selena), I have different versions of her for different universes. I don't mind if you use her name to refer to me as well.
"Disclaimer": My taste in fictional characters doesn't reflect my taste in real-life people (especially in regards to their age, since most of them are a lot older than me), also many of them are villains/have done questionable things and I wouldn't support their actions in real life.
Current main f/os:
Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz (2nd Dimension) [Phineas and Ferb] | Tag: f/o: 🚂
Hector Barbossa [Pirates of the Caribbean] | Tag: f/o: 🏴‍☠️
Davy Jones [Pirates of the Caribbean] | Tag: f/o: 🐙
The Horned King [The Black Cauldron] | Tag: f/o: 💀
~~~
DNI:
Basic things that you find in pretty much everyone's DNI criteria like racists, neonazis, LGBTQ-phobes, pedophiles, zoophiles etc., I think you know the drill. If you are any of these or otherwise a problematic and gross person please stay away. Basically just don't be an asshole or be unnecessarily hateful/harmful towards people who just want to exist in peace. (Also I'm not too familiar with the whole "pro-shipping" debate or what the exact definition of it is, but I'd rather not interact with adults who ship with children characters, or people who glorify/romanticise topics like pedophilia, incest, abuse etc.)
Other than that I don't really have any specific criteria, but if you're hateful against selfshipping or shame people for having "cringe" interests, this might not be a place for you either.
All in all, as long as you're a decent person you're welcome to stay, I'm really just here to have fun and talk about my favourite characters :)

Additional info:
Most of the stuff I post/reblog is suitable for general audiences, and I generally don't mind people of any age following me (unless maybe you're under the age of 13, but then you shouldn't be on Tumblr anyway).
However I won't completely exclude posting/reblogging adult content, but I will try my best to tag it appropriately with tags like "nsfw", "nsft", "explicit", "spicy", "suggestive" and the like. If you don't want to see these things, I suggest blacklisting these tags, especially if you're a minor. For my own posts, I will also always put a "read more" link and a warning before the actual content, so it isn't right in your face and you can decide on your own if you want to look at it or not. [By now I do have a dedicated side blog for adult self ship content as well. I'm a little secretive about it, but I tend to share the @ every once in a while.]
I also have a roleplay side blog for my Pirates of the Caribbean OC/self-insert: @selenafinley-rp Feel free to follow there too! :)

I may edit this post in the future in case I feel like there needs something to be changed.
