trying not to talk too much abt the bear s2 but im Really fuckin frustrated that even with everyone demanding that they’re sooo media literate and sooo smart that no one has talked about claire and the way she sparks audience discomfort. like, she feels out of place within the show because CARMY cannot accept that he is getting this good thing—she feels out of place in HIS life. she’s actually crafted to be the ideal girlfriend, with glowy bokeh lighting in a grocery store and beauty shot close ups and a sweet instrumental leitmotif to show to you, an audience member, that she’s too good to be true in carmys eyes. if you’re an audience member, she raises alarm bells in YOUR head because she raises alarm bells in HIS. he literally tells us that—that’s the crux of his final monologue, that he doesn’t believe he can have the life of food and wines best chef and a life of love and human connection. he doesn’t believe he’s deserving of good things because his family has always been so fucked, because nothing he’s ever tried to hold together has held together—except for his cooking. it’s done this way on purpose, to make you feel that anxiety that he feels around this relationship, and to make you question why you feel it too

RICHIE NAT AND CLAIRE HERSELF. ALL CONFIRM THAT THEY COULD EXIST TOGETHER #he just can’t find it. and he won’t find it till he makes peace with himself and his childhood #and figures out WHY he got into this business (he still is trying to prove something. he’s still trying to prove he’s worth it) #edit: INCH RESTINNG YOU ALL TOOK THIS TO SHIPPING AND SYDCARMY. So uhhh s2e6 was FASCINATING and i could pick it apart for daysss but one thing that I was so interested to watch was sugar.

At the party, Natalie wants to handle it. She wants to ask her mother if she's okay, and she wants her mom to say yes. And IMMEDIATELY I thought of this scene in the beef's office in s1e6, when carmy asks sugar why she's mad at him.

S: Plus we never spend any real time together. This place is eating you alive, you know.

C: You always blame this place... you blame the restaurant. You don't blame Mom, you don't blame Mikey.

S: How could I not blame this place?... All of our time, money, work, gets sucked up into this place. The only thing we get back is chaos, resentment.

C: Sounds like Mom.

Sugar puts so much care towards her mom, and her mom spits it right back at her.

Back in s1e6, Carmy tells Sugar sort of the honest and genuine perspective of why it hurts to be asked "are you okay?":

I guess all the time I feel like I'm trapped. Because I can't describe... how I'm feeling. So to ask somebody else what they're feeling, that just seems, uh... I don't know, insane?

But I'm sorry, you're right. I wanna know how you're feeling.

And just... something about sugar resonates so horribly. The way that she desperately wants to be caring and understanding enough to fix the people around her. She needs to make everything right. To the point that she can't acknowledge Mikey and her mom hurt her, because if she does it means she's failed-- as a sister, as a daughter.

She feels the tension in the room and wants to address it, to keep calm and in control, to fix everything. It would be cool for her to learn that she can't, and she doesn't have to. I guess that's what Mikey was trying to tell her, at the beginning of "fishes".

with her, not handling it, it's the best way to handle it.

i think the whole conversation of whether or not claire was a necessary or good character can be boiled down to one thing - she was meant to show carmy love and tenderness. it didn't really matter if it was an old crush or a new person he randomly met, what mattered is that she was meant to say there is life outside of work and it can be nice and enjoyable, and you can explore hobbies, and you can have someone close to lean on during tough times. and it all ultimately led carmy to decide all of that makes him distracted and let people down at his number one purpose which is the kitchen therefore he doesn't need any amusement or enjoyment, he can do without it, as long as he excels at work. and he's been like this his whole life and he never had a family member make him think otherwise, so baby boy will need 5 more seasons of therapy to even consider changing his mind. but i think the purpose of claire was to show what "normal" life with "normal" people in it may look like and for carmy to convince himself that nope he's too fucked up for that

The Bear:

Season 2 I love it. I really love it. It was sublime, brave storytelling. I don't even want to watch another show right now. I just want to think about how amazing that was and how many scary wonderful places Carmy, Sydney, Sugar, Richie, Marcus and crew can go.

Warning: Carmy x Sydney Season 2 Spoilers

The fact that Carmy teaches Sydney the sign language for “sorry” and they use that is doing something for me. One review talks about his kindness towards her this season. Other reviews mention her struggling with his leadership and her recipes. I think they will have huge conflict but will make out the other side stronger and even more bonded as a unit. 

Them having their own language of compassion that may be shared just between them, that’s vocally silent, and intentional really gets me in the feels. How does he know sign language? What occurred to make this a necessary way for them to communicate. What develops emotionally to make them want this kind of touchstone of forgiveness and accountability between them? How will it look visually? I will probably cry at the sight of it.

The Bear Season 2 finale thoughts

Did viewing #2 last night with husband and woke up thinking about Carmy literally getting fridged (in the loosest sense of the term) and being the ranting chaos in the background that his mother was in Fishes and then Richie calling him Donna.
