I was going to make a post like "hey what did Kaiba even do with Chopman after Death-T shut down" and then I remembered that the game ended with the room getting set on fire. I think Jonouchi incinerated the Chopman. What is it with this series and setting people on fire

So thinking of this line from Honda about this being hard to handle for Johji. And then we are immediately on the panels of:

You can see how it's like oh its been hard on Yugi too! But this reaction from Jounouchi is a bit...unusual at first. When you look at it through the lens of what they just went through, the adrenaline from the previous chapter with the chopman, he's in fight or flight mode.

Jounouchi was almost chopped to bits and had to set a man on fire to escape. They're all honestly going through something absolutely horrific. They're all exhausted and terrified. Honda's calmness seems so out of place in a way. Anzu already has a freak out earlier. Here's Yugi and Jounouchi. Honda stays chill, which is interesting.

You know, just before this part, I wasn’t sure how I felt about Yugi solving the problem by leading Jonouchi to the candlestick and coming up with the plan. But Jonouchi’s comment here really does sell me on the team-up.

Kaiba and the Chopman might be aligned, but it’s not like they’re friends - they’re allies of convenience. So naturally, there’s no way their combined efforts can even begin to compare to Jonouchi and Yugi’s teamwork.

And of course, I also have to take a moment to just appreciate these panels, because they really do give a sense of this slow-motion, crushing realization on the part of the Chopman as he ends up doing himself in.

this is fascinating because dm only jou and dsod jou do have different relationships with kaiba! dm has legendary heroes, virtual world, and doma (which canonically has kaiba and jou and yugi sharing another past life??). they all show kaiba’s devotion to mokuba, his awful childhood, an encounter with a virtual gozaburo, and the kaiba corp enemies kaiba inherits. it also doesn’t have death-t, though it still has kaiba hospitalizing sugoroku and ripping up the muto blue eyes 1/2

2/2 while dsod/manga kaiba and jou have death-t between them. but they also have kaiba saving jounouchi in battle city, which dm doesn’t. i think dsod jou would be more cynical about kaiba that dm jou. especially if kaiba no longer has a meaningful relationship with mokuba and is building questionable tech. he would be more likely to hide any romantic feelings and he’d need time to believe in kaiba’s. just a more cautious guy—spontaneity would be self-destruction rather than a leap of faith

Absolutely. I agree 100%! DM Kaijou is often easier to write because they have a longer and friendlier shared history. Throughout the anime, you see Jounouchi warming up to Kaiba on a number of occasions, such as cheering for Kaiba's victory during Noa's virtual world. He is unequivocally on Kaiba's side during that arc even if he's still behaving like a grumpy asshole. They have a shared history of trying to help/save each other. There's an instance of Kaiba seeming to care about Jounouchi!

(There was no way on earth I wasn't going to take a chance not to drop a gif of that.)

Manga verse? Well, Kaiba has tried to kill/maim the gang several times, specifically Jounouchi in the whole Chopman game. And it doesn't seem as if manga Jounouchi ever forgave Kaiba for that (and I don't really blame him, I wouldn't be in a forgiving mood after nearly being chainsawed to tiny bits unless some truly spectacular groveling happened first). Their interactions through the Battle City portion is much frostier than their anime counterpart, even if Kaiba did technically help Jounouchi at the pier. But even after Jounouchi gets out of the water, he doesn't so much thank Kaiba as he says, "Fine, I owe you one!"

Given that, it's fair to say that DSOD Jounouchi is more cynical and cautious in how he views Kaiba. To him, Kaiba likely hasn't made any attempts to improve himself. And Kaiba has definitely never apologized for past transgressions. I personally think it's incredibly hard for romantic feelings to develop between them without having cleared the air. But to be fair to Kaiba, I do think manga Jounouchi can be extra harsh/unforgiving to him. Basically, neither of them has done anything to bridge the gulf of understanding between them.

DSOD occupies a strange middle ground between the two. Because narrative motivation-wise? The movie makes zero sense if it follows the events of the anime. Kaiba's absence from the Ceremonial Duel flashback clearly indicates that it follows the manga ending. Yet everything else about it is very Duel Monsters anime coded, from the character design to the return of the anime voice actor to remastering the soundtrack music from the anime. So it's easy to fold what we know from the anime into it and conflate it as the same universe/timeline.

Talk about your obscure references--the rename of Death-T to Doom-T comes from the Destiny Board Traveler GBA game, where a Death-T map was called that. (But they kept the Chopman XD) I wonder if that means we’ll have a Death-T event in Duel Links in the future.

Ya know. Pretty much every character in Yu-Gi-Oh needs therapy. Just realized this after thinking Mokuba probably went to therapy after the T-Death and saw the rest of the characters…

Lmao yeah. Kaiba pulled a reverse uno and gave his brother his same trauma of the Experience of Death hallucinations (tho for Mokuba, that shit was very nearly real). I could see everyone but Kaiba admitting they need help and going to therapy. I’m gonna start rambling and it’s probably annoying haha, so I’m putting it under a read more. 

I could see it maybe starting with Anzu, for the reason of when she was held at gunpoint by the escaped convict. That’s a really scary thing to go through, especially since the Convict was serious about shooting her. Probably more reasons if you go by the Season 0 anime. Death T might also be a huge factor since she and her friends had so many near-death experiences and, I want to say for at least an hour, thought Honda was dead. That’s gotta have some consequences on her mental health. Same with Yuugi and Jonouchi. 

On the spot, I can’t think of much for Jonouchi outside of Death T. I could definitely see him having nightmares about the Chopman because holy shit was that guy terrifying. He’d probably join Anzu in therapy for that and the hour or so that he thought Honda was dead. 

The same goes for Honda where I can’t think of anything outside of Death T. I imagine he was probably terrified when he was stuck in the cubed rooms and thought he was going to die. Seeing Jonouchi go up against the Chopman wasn't a pleasant experience either. 

Yuugi has so many reasons why he’d be in therapy. He gets beat up on an almost daily basis and was friendless/lonely for a really long time. His blackouts where Yami takes over might also be a reason since it scared him and he had no idea what was happening. Death T can also be a big factor since I think Kaiba did tell him he was doing this because of what Yami did to him? 

Sorry for rambling! I was just thinking about why each of them would need therapy after the first 7 mangas.

Dropping 3 6/6 elusives for 0 mana each that let me draw On Nexus Strike is perfectly fair thank you based Naut.

This deck has SUCH a swing in tempo when it hits Deep.

I was sweating because it was a Noxus-based zerg-ish deck and was worried their last card in hand was another Decimate. No, it was Dario Chopman. He did a mega chop and I lost my Terror of the Tides (go Dario go) but I literally could have won on elusive unit damage alone.

Lure of the Depths is a good card yo. Sure I sacrifice a bit of consistency in getting out my champions perhaps but it makes up for it in clutch power since it gives me a Sea Monster from deck. It let me have a Devourer eat a Tryndamere and well you don’t get your level up boyo. Seems to count as a Last Breath effect? Or is it like a ‘revive’ part of the effect that the Obliterate gets rid of?

I thought having a 7/7 unit that gave free removal on a unit with 6 or less health was strong but removing it from play too? Wow.
