No point dwelling on it. Focus on what you can do. Not what's already come to pass. You just have to keep going... Keep trying. You'll get there in the end.

a Venn diagram of the girls <3
(corrections very welcome)
notes:
not sure about the exact timeline so Syl might not be a teenager currently. oh well; they were both teens for a while tho
i don't actually know if Ghirra met Lourna. I assume she would have at least post-starlight though.
i resisted padding the graph by including their signature color scheme but mentioned it here so
Chancey and Ghirra both appear in TFS, Avon and Syl are mentioned but do not appear outside of ms ireland's writing
i'm not sure if Syl is confirmed as a lesbian out of universe (such as Vernestra was confirmed aroace) and i know she was originally meant to have a bi love triangle. but i think the text supports reading her that way
i wanted to include the surname similarity but couldn't figure out a succint way to phrase it lol
i suppose Chancey wasn't kidnapped per se but she definitely didn't think she was free to leave so i'd count it

Still stuck to the fact that, in The Eye of Darkness audiobook, Elzar says "I l-" at the end of his message for Avar.

It's so weird reading characters referring to phase II era technology as "ancient". That word has an actual specific meaning in our world, referring before the fall(ish) of the western Roman Empire. You wouldn't call an early printing press ancient unless you were being hyperbolic. In other settings I expect at least like a thousand years. Porter you were alive when the technology you're thinking of as ancient was in service!

Really loved The Eye of Darkness. I come into reading any THR stuff wanting to like it so that helps, but this novel really takes the cake as one of the better ones in the series for me.
It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, especially if you aren’t content with the plot going slowly. This is very much a novel about spending a lot of time with the characters instead of jumping to many different events. But I think the novel does an excellent job of building the setting for the entire phase, establishing why the Nihil are a formidable opponent going forward, and makes the pov characters (Avar, Porter, Elzar, Bell, and Ghirra) work really well. I love them and their struggles. I don’t think I’ve loved Avar or Porter more than now.
Unlike Phase I where each novel was built around a singular disaster/Nihil atrocity, this one is more about world building for the Occlusion Zone and how the characters work around (and within) it. There’s still a lot of tension and none of the time spent is filler. I’d reread it immediately if I had the time.
