Did you know that "Alternate Universe - Formula One" is a canonical tag on AO3? To the tune of about 400 works? About a quarter of them are AUs of the recent F1 grid, but apparently an awful lot of fandoms have at least one person who wakes up one day and decides to put their blorbos into race cars.

For this year's @theterrorbigbang, I decided that I was going to be that guy for The Terror.

I have had the great good fortune to once again have @awhbeans as my collaborator, and she has done an absolutely amazing job—I don't know how she manages to pull these images out of my head and make them a reality in her illustrations, but she absolutely did and it's beautiful. Here's a tiny teaser. For the whole amazing thing(s), you gotta go look.

Anyway, it was fun to merge my two chief hyperfixations: a TV show about the destructive hubris of empire and compassion and brotherhood in the face of certain death on one hand; on the other, handsome men driving very fast cars. I've spent a lot of the last few months reading loads of F1 nonfiction, plus watching a lot of old race footage (because of course the only way I was going to write a modern AU was to pick a setting that requires at least as much research as canonical historical fiction) and hopefully it's all paid off.

A Terror Sci-Fi AU  |  Part of The Terror Big Bang 2022

The remains of the Discovery Ship Terebus are found in a region of space where they’re not supposed to be. A region of space where nothing is supposed to be.

Per navy protocol the ship has consumed itself in an attempt to generate enough power to keep the crew - locked in stasis - alive until they can be rescued. After over twenty years there’s almost nothing left of it. Only seven pods out of 24 remain.

Seven men, trapped inside their dreams.

Stasis is meant as measure of last-resort to hold out a few weeks. Months at most. Not decades. After so long the minds inside those bodies might be empty. They might be insane.

If the truth of what went wrong with the Terebus and its mission is ever going to become known, someone will have to try to coax the survivors back into the waking world. A trusted friend. A kind and handsome face.

Sir James Clark Ross is an old man now, and fragile. Fate has given him one final chance to save the friends who sailed away without him into the dark, all those years ago. He has to try.

When John Irving was steeling himself for another dreadful weekend in the Swiss Alps, he only thought he'd have to deal with integrating George's new boyfriend into their strange group. Nothing could have prepared him to have the same new boyfriend's ex-boyfriend crashing the party and turning his whole life around. When Cornelius Hickey decided to crash Billy's new fake life so he could get his boyfriend back, he never expected he'd have to learn how to ski or, even worse, care about another self-centred prat.

Despite months of upheaval and being dubbed a "vile deviant" for writing kissy fanfic, I did it: my fic for this year's @theterrorbigbang, Something Rich and Strange.

Harry Goodsir's life, imagined as a garden of forking paths. It's 1848 and he is dying in a tent on King William Island. It's 1849 and he is having yet another tiresome argument with the administration of Surgeons' Hall over funding for the museum while he waits for his friend Edward Forbes to return from the Arctic. It's 1854 and he's serving in the Crimea with James Fitzjames. It's 1861 and he is collecting butterflies under the watchful eyes of asylum orderlies. It's 1870 and he is walking on the beach near Fife with his children. It's 1886 and Silna holds his hand as he breathes his last. All of these things are true.

A Terror Sci Fi AU

Bridgens was of course terribly worried about poor Commander Little. But worried as they were, it didn’t stop them from sneaking a plum cake onto the tray with their Henry’s tea. Commander Little wouldn’t begrudge a steward spoiling their favorite crewman now and again, but Bridgens was unfortunately installed with a healthy dose of shame and preferred the Commander simply not know about it.

They found Peglar at the sail controls, down in the hold. They found him, in fact, with his feet up on the console, snoozing.

As shame and guilt aren’t the same thing, Bridgens didn’t think twice about pushing Peglar’s feet off the console so he woke up with a snort.

“Babe!”

“Only you would be caught napping when your beloved mylar’s already in the red,” Bridgens told him with a swat on his shoulder. They set the tea tray down and gave Peglar a kiss on the forehead to make up for the scolding. “Will you retract it soon, do you think?”

“Hmm? Nah, it’s fine,” Peglar said, noticing the plum cake. “We’ll find a good spot just on the inside of the chamber to settle and wait out the tide shift, nice and safe. Oh wow where’d you get that?”

“Never you mind,” Bridgens said with a wink. Peglar grinned at them and raised his chin for a kiss, and since there was no one else around and Commander Little was still in surgery, Bridgens didn’t mind indulging him.
