From a Legends (Legend’s) Point of View 2024
Background
From a Legends Point of View (or From a Legend’s Point of View, see what we did there?) is a Star Wars fandom fic event dedicated to celebrating the characters and stories of the Star Wars Legends continuity during and around the time of the Original Trilogy (OT).
Building from the talents of the many writers in the Star Wars fandom, we hope to develop and share a diverse collection of approximately 40 stories of pilots, smugglers, spies, scoundrels, and other characters from the original Star Wars Extended Universe in mid-September 2024.
How It Works
At signup, writers will each pitch at least three (up to five) different ideas for a fic of 5k-10k words to write for the collection. The pitches should focus on Legends characters or situations during the Original Trilogy and must fit the other story and pitch guidelines listed below.
Mods will review signups and assign one pitch from each writer to be written for the collection, with a goal of creating a collection with stories covering a variety of OT-era time periods, characters, and events.
Writers will submit their fics to a collection on Archive of Our Own (AO3), which will then be shared with the fandom.
Schedule
Sunday, April 28: Signups are now open - Use the From a Legends POV - Pitches form here to sign up. (Step-by-step Signup Guidelines available here.)
Sunday, June 2: Signups close
Saturday-Sunday, June 8-9: Writers receive their assignments
Week of July 7-13: First check-in with writers
Week of August 4-10: Second check-in with writers
Sunday, August 11: Final drop out deadline
Sunday, September 8: Assignments due
Sunday, September 15: Collection revealed
(More details under the cut…)
Story and Pitch Guidelines
All stories should be set during or within six months of the events depicted in the Star Wars Original Trilogy films (0 BBY - 4ABY), and set within the main Star Wars galaxy (aka the Galaxy Far Far Away/GFFA).
Stories should focus on characters and/or events in the Star Wars Legends continuity, which can include any characters who appear in the three Original Trilogy films as well as characters from the Legends novels, comics, video games, or other materials.
Shipping guidelines: Stories should not be focused on romance or shipping and should not include smut. References to ships among characters in the story or among other characters are fine, but please limit these to mentions (for ships that do not include the point of view character) or subtext (for ships that do include the point of view character). Within these restrictions, any ships are allowed, regardless of whether they are considered canon in the Legends continuity.
Ratings and archive warnings: Any ratings or tags are allowed, as long as stories are appropriately tagged and follow the other story guidelines (e.g., no smut).
Each writer will submit at least three and up to five pitches for stories they would be willing to write for the collection. Across all the pitches, stories should feature a minimum of at least three different characters and a minimum of at least two different time periods during the OT. To ensure that we include a wide range of characters and stories in the collection, at least two pitches should feature a point of view character who is not one of the Original Trilogy main trio (Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo), and at least one pitch should feature a point of view character who is not another prominent OT character (Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, R2D2, C3PO, Darth Vader), nor a member of the Rogue Squadron “Fab Four” (Wedge Antilles, Wes Janson, Tycho Celchu, Hobbie Klivian).
Stories for this collection are intended to add to the universe of fic we have for Legends; please do not submit pitches for stories you have already written and shared elsewhere, even if they fit the other guidelines.
Signup and Submission Details
Signups are now live! Use this Signup Form to share each of your pitches and provide contact information, including your Archive Of Our Own (AO3) username. Step-by-step Signup Guidelines are available here.
Once all signups have been reviewed, one of the mods will contact you via the information provided to let you know which one of your story pitches has been accepted (your assignment), and will provide instructions on how to submit your assignment to the collection.
We will also provide a signup form for people who would be willing to serve as a beta reader or cheerleader for other writers. Writers can request a beta reader when they sign up, or at any time before the beta request deadline (approximately two weeks before assignments are due). Betas may be available on a more limited basis after that deadline, but cannot be guaranteed.
Mods will check in with all writers twice over the course of the writing portion of the event to see how they are doing and connect them with a beta reader, cheerleader, or other assistance as needed. Please be sure to check your messages regularly and respond promptly to messages from the mods.
If you realize you will be unable to complete your assignment in time, please let the mods know as soon as possible, but definitely prior to the August 11 dropout deadline. That will enable us to reach out to find potential pinch hitters as needed.
Assignments are due Sunday, September 8 at any time. You will submit your fic via AO3, mods will confirm that it follows story and tagging guidelines, and it will be approved for the collection. The collection will be open for submissions a few weeks ahead of the deadline if you wish to submit early.
Because we intend to reveal these stories as a collection, please hold off on sharing or promoting your story until the full collection is released on September 15. After that time, please promote your story and others in the collection as much as possible!

hi! how did you become a fan of oscar and what do you like about him the most?
Hi Nonnie,
Thank you so much for your ask 🥰 I am actually pretty new to the Oscar fandom myself as I hadn’t even heard of him before 2020.
It all started with this precious cutie:
Tumblr media
You probably couldn’t call it love at first sight, because it took me at least five minutes, but after starting to watch “The Force Awakens” out of sheer curiosity, I somehow ended up watching the whole sequel trilogy in one sitting. At the end of which I had hopelessly fallen in love with Poe. So I had to check out who this amazing actor portraying him was. I watched “Inside Llewyn Davis” and fell in love with Llewyn. I watched “Triple Frontier” and fell in love with Santi. I watched “The Promise” and… I think you get the picture 😆
What do I like about Oscar the most, oh boy… let’s start with his absolutely incredible and out-of-this-world acting abilities? He is not only a chameleon when it comes to his outward appearance; the range of diverse roles and complex characters that he has portrayed is just mind-blowing!
He can sing AND play the guitar (and I mean *really* play the guitar!) and I really love his voice. This may sound a little weird but his voice has a kind of soothing effect on me.
The enthusiasm and passion he brings to each of his projects, you can really see that he loves what he is doing.
The way he uses the publicity surrounding his projects to raise awareness for certain issues and at the same time not making a big deal out of the fact that he does so (I hope this makes some kind of sense to you).
I know it’s always a little dangerous to talk about loving certain character traits of a celebrity, because at the end of the day they are a stranger and their “opinions” may just be part of a well curated image, but I love the way how he teases topics that you just know will get certain people’s knickers in a twist (like the gender fluidity of BB-8).
The way how he openly shows his love and admiration for Elvira. And not just when they are posing for the cameras. In the interviews discussing “The Letter Room”, there were so many proud husband moments and even if it should turn out that they had all been for show, they still melt my heart.
He just seems to exude so much warmth.
He can be such an adorkable cutie.
His talent for faking accents (yepp, I really love Steven’s accent, sorry).
This is going to sound hella superficial but I just really really love his booty his soulful brown eyes and his curls and his smile.
I’ll probably think of a thousand more things the minute that I post this, but in the meantime I’d like to play an uno-reverse-card and ask you how you became a fan and what you like about him (only if you’re comfortable with answering that, of course 😊)?

Ugh ok it’s late and I might regret writing this to someone in the morning but I’m genuinely upset now bc my brother just went on a tangent abt how shipping irl ppl is awful and disgusting but crankiplier (markiplier and crankgameplays) is right next tss for me rn and I almost told him yesterday and I’m really upset that he thinks something I enjoy is revolting. Is it actually that bad like should I actually stop? I don’t post anything abt it so I thought it would be fine and I know it’s not real and not gonna happen so it should be fine right? But then why does everything think it’s so awful. I know the real people don’t care for it but they don’t hate when people do it for funsies right? I just feel so bad now like am I actually a bad person? I always seem to have problematic ships and so I have no one to talk to about it but myself which is already kinda hard, but to think that I’m hated by ppl bc I think certain people can be cute together. Can you help me understand please, like should I stop? -🧸
Hi 🧸 Anon,
This is a very grey-zone question so I think it would help to go over a general range of all the kinds of IRL shipping that take place and talk about each one.
It’s also a hotly debated topic and you can find people for and against it all over the internet, so you might want to read through more opinions as well.
First off, the umbrella opinion seems to be that shipping real people together is not cool, because it can make those people very uncomfortable.  Celebrities are already a lot more exposed than most people and their fans opinions can have a big sway on what content they produce and what directions their work takes.  So, learning that huge numbers of their fans think they should be dating someone or other can be stressful, not matter how they actually feel about that person.
Some celebs take this information in different ways.  Thomas Sanders and Jon Cozart apparently thought it was funny and leaned into their ship by making a video about their compatibility.  But I recall a talented Loki cosplayer a while back who was very offended that fans were shipping him with another cosplayer and hated all the comments he got about it.
(There is also the side factor of people we see in media or online not necessarily showing their true personality, but actually a persona they create for their content.  Deep analysis of those personas as if they were the real person can sometimes make those celebs feel incorrectly portrayed or misunderstood.  For example, this is tied to why fanders, and Thomas himself, have made a point to clearly distinguish between the real Thomas and Character Thomas.)
So, what form does the shipping take anyway?  If it’s just thoughts in your head - a headcanon - no harm no foul.  It sounds like you’re in this category.  The celebs can’t read your mind, there’s virtually no way anyone will ever become aware that this ship is taking place in your head.  Your thoughts are your own and you shouldn’t feel bad for having them.  This is like Level 1.  But what if it went further?
Level 2 - innocent posts / chatter
From your example, Mark and Ethan do appear to have a very close friendship in their videos together.  So it’s not a big jump to see a new video and comment on their friendship or closeness, and maybe you tag it “crankiplier”.  Ships can be platonic, too, of course.  Pretty innocent, just recognizing things they’ve actually done together, thinking it’s sweet, and chatting with other fans about it.  It might not be the intended focus of the video, but their personalities and friendly chemistry is part of why they’re great to watch together.
Level 3 - fan-edits / art / fiction / and statements
This level is the ultimate grey-zone because of the broad sweeping range of content it encompasses.  Redraws of scenes people have actually been in, edits or video compilations of people’s interactions are pretty safe.  But art and fiction that are creating entirely new events get iffy.  Those celebs didn’t really do those things.  Now the fan is developing the relationship beyond what is really there, and should be reasonably cautious.
Special attention to the word “statements” - When fans say things in the comments section or directly at celebs like, “you two should ---” or, “when are you two gonna ---?”, it’s creating a clear potential for that person to feel pressured and uncomfortable.
Level 4 - NSFW /
NSFW suggestions, writing, and art are very questionable!  People doing this should be prepared to highly curate who has access to their work, because hate will come out of the woodwork.  And if the celebs in question found it, there’s a high chance they would be disturbed and offended, and it may cause them to speak out against it and the poster.
Level 5 - Toxic.
All the levels before now are still grey, albeit some more than others.  But this level (that I just made up) represents the denial of facts.  While shipping can often build off of what was already there, a toxic level of shipping denies all contradicting information and tries to force its own narrative.  Think of celebrities who are actually in relationships already, but the ship is for a different pairing.  Toxic shippers will hate the real relationship, sometimes even send hate to that S.O. and promote the failure of the person’s real life relationships in favor of the ship.  That’s just wrong and it’s veering right into harassment.
(And coming back to the point about personas, a person might have a relationship that their fans don’t know about, because they keep their private life separate from the persona they present.  Fans can’t know everything about a person, and therefore might cross the line without realizing it.  The only way to prevent that is by not being so aggressive about a ship in the first place.)
Shipping IRL can stir up a lot of strife in a fandom, because everyone has different boundaries and because it has a high potential for going too far -because it has gone too far, too many times, and people, fans and celebs alike, remember dealing with the fallout of those events and how weird it made things for everyone.  Some creators even leaving their work behind to get away from it.  When a particular celeb has stated they are already in a monogamous relationship with someone else, or they don’t like being shipped in general, their decisions should be respected.  Aggressive, pushy obsessions of IRL ships like in Level 5 should be avoided altogether just to be safe.  The celeb’s life is not ours to control.
All that said, freedom of speech means you can say whatever you like, and if that means promoting an IRL ship in various forms, then you could do that.  But other people can also tell you they don’t like it, or hate it even.
There will always be people who hate you, or hate groups you’re in, for all kinds of random reasons.  People are just too diverse for it to be any other way.  So long as you aren’t hurting anyone (e.g. actively and thoughtfully examining your actions to prevent hurting people) then you do you, friend.

So, what is the deal with tumblr's weird beef with Pixar's new movie Coco? I see a lot of people complaining about it and I don't get why
That’s actually a really interesting subject, because there’s quite a lot to unpack there:
1: Earlier into the films production, Disney tried to trademark the phrase “Dia de los muertos”, the Mexican name for the Day of the Dead holiday that the movie is based around. Naturally this resulted in justifiable outrage and disgust from Mexican citizens and fans at a company trying to trademark a holiday that holds great significance to their culture. Thankfully Disney quickly backed down after realizing how stupid they had been, but it still left many people bitter and weary of how the movie was going to turn out.
2: You heard of The Book of Life? It’s another movie based around the same holiday released about three years ago. It was generally well received by critics, but had something of a broken base reception among audiences for a variety of reasons, and made just shy of $100 million at the worldwide box office on a $50 million budget, making it only a very modest success at best. Though it has a passionate fandom especially here on tumblr.
Part of that has to do with the fact that it was directed by Jorge Gutierrez, a talented Mexican director and animator probably best known for creating the Nickelodeon show El Tigre. He’s a nice guy from what I’ve seen and very passionate about his culture and his works.
Tumblr and many social justice advocates are very passionate about pushing for a wider range of diversity in the media, and that includes behind the scenes and supporting the work of minority creators in Hollywood and the entertainment Industry in general (And understandably, it is an important cause).
So when Pixar announced the release date for a film also based on the Day of the Dead holiday, directed by a white man, fans of The Book of Life and Jorge became immediately salty over the prospect, since with Pixar’s pedigree even if the movie turned out not well received it was all but guaranteed to make WAY more money and get far more publicity from both the general public and the animation community than the Book of Life did, maybe even having a shot at winning best animated feature Oscar due to the academy’s bias towards Disney and Pixar due to their general disregard to animation as a legitimate art form worthy of their attention.
3: Disney have a very shaky history with representing non-white groups of people and cultures, many of their classic and even recent movies featuring offensive stereotypes or just downright racist stories, the most well known example being Pocahontas, a movie where if you know anything at all about the real life person it’s story is “Based” on, you’d… be pretty insulted, to say the least.
They’ve gotten better at this to an extent this century, Moana for example despite some complaints was pretty well researched and the filmmakers clearly cared about doing their best to respect Polynesian culture. But a lot of people are just suspicious whenever Disney release a work vaguely like Coco made by a white director and mostly white crew. The fact that it’s specifically Pixar making the film doesn’t alleviate this sentiment, since they’re owned by and heavily connected to Disney.
This also ties in with the previous point, where Book of Life fans and people who want to see more support for movies about Mexico and their culture by actual Mexican creators feel embittered about the situation with Coco, to the point of calling it a rip-off based on any even coincidental similarity they perceive between the two films.
Disney did recognise this, and brought on a Latino co-director in Adrian Molina, and a number of high profile Latino consultants including the CEO of the Mexico Heritage Corp Marcela Davison Aviles to help make sure the film was as accurate and respectful to Mexican culture and the traditions behind the Day of the Dead holiday as possible, the director and crew already having done extensive research to have achieved this from the start of production.
This helped alleviate some people’s concerns, but for many the damage was already done and among many here on Tumblr there was lingering resentment both from Book of Life fans and many people who just felt that a film about Mexican culture should have been the work of Mexican creators from the start. So the movie had a hard time winning over much of it’s detractors pre-release.
And, while I think there’s more I could add and probably I don’t know about, I think that covers a lot of the main points.
From what I’ve seen, Coco has been unanimously well received in Mexico upon release, and despite the attitudes of his fans Jorge Gutierrez loved the movie, and was very excited about having multiple animated movies about an important holiday from his culture being made (A sentiment echoed by many Mexican people and fans as to why the complaints about being a rip-off of Book of Life just from being based around the same holiday were unfair and jumping the gun, since how many movies do we have about Christmas and Halloween?).
So, it looks like things turned out fine regardless of the controversy. Now, I haven’t seen the movie. And I’ll say upfront, I’m a white-British guy who only has a basic knowledge about Mexico and it’s culture. I can’t tell you how accurate and respectful the movie is, whether it features any problematic elements or stereotypes and any of that. I probably wouldn’t be qualified to comment on that even after watching the film.
If there are Latino fans who have watched the movie, and are very passionate about their culture and how their people are represented in the media and they take issue with anything in the final product, I won’t argue too hard with them.
I will say though that a movie like this being made, and the way it’s been embraced by the people it’s representing, is a very important thing for Mexican people. We need more movies based on and which lovingly embrace and celebrate that country and it’s culture, now more than ever maybe with the rising anti-immigrant and anti-Latino sentiments in the United States, especially with President Crazy Steve and his “Let’s build a wall to keep those rapists out of our country and save our jerbs!!” nonsense.
It’s important for non-Latino children to see movies portraying Mexico and it’s people in a positive way, and maybe even more so important for Latino children to see themselves in the media as the heroes more often than they do currently, especially those of immigrant families.
So, with the film now released and the very positive reception it’s got, you know… maybe we can all just calm down a little and accept this as a victory?
