5.7 | Perils of Peekablue

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)

What a roller coaster! 😆 I thought this was gonna be a goof episode that wouldn’t land for me, but it went so many directions!

This is now my FAVORITE Mermista episode. Her getting all butched up for a party just puts her entire manner in a new light, it comes off less “whatever” and more cool and hard-boiled.

I loved the absurd running gag of them tying up more and more people who have beef with Sea Hawk. And then when it’s her enemy, because she set a boat on fire, I was losing my mind. The writing and animating of that sequence just hit pitch perfect for me, I was more into the Sea Hawk and Mermista tension than ever before.

Scorpia’s arc didn’t really strike the iron for me. It was nice that Perfuma was helping her self-esteem, but it felt pretty broad. And her sacrificing herself doesn’t really evidence a change in her character, does it? Her song was super nice though. I love that it was like a perfect constructive use of her propensity for saying exactly what’s on her mind and being kind of simplistic and fumbly with her words.

I LOVED seeing Double Trouble again! Why is that little freak so close to my heart? I love to make fun of Jacob Tobia but they’re knocking it out of the park right here. Just keep rocking that fae little voice, honey! Ugh and the Peekablue form itself charmed me out of my seat. He’s so femininely handsome and his voice had a surprising harshness to it?

It’s so funny to think of Double Trouble trying to sell their services to the full Horde and being like ‘huh… hm… all hive mind clones, huh… well, this is freaking BORING.’

Oh yeah and how about them calling Catra their CASH KITTEN? EXCUSE ME? 😳

As for the other plot, at first I was going to say it was odd how quickly Spinnerella’s chip was discovered, and that it could have been really cool if that plotline actually made you think it was a light one about couples’ issues and missing her anniversary, with a shocking twist at the end! But I love that Spinny was like the decoy before revealing that tons of people are already chipped, including main cast that were completely kept secret. That was so cool.

Ohh, and I loved seeing Catra messing around with Adora in the beginning! I’m going to love her new presence in the cast. She’s so adorably enamored with pushing people’s buttons and making them mad no matter where she is. It suddenly occurs to me that Catra and Adora are a perfect opposites couple. Adora is so serious she’ll be so much fun to bother. But she’s also so earnest she’ll always make Catra feel loved. Shit I’m making myself tear up

The plot overall still has a really strong structure and momentum! This season really knows where it wants to get to and every step on the way feels purposeful.

I can’t believe Catra put down Scorpia’s singing.
