Thank you for your notes, ep 10 seems so fun! Would you mind explaining the plays a bit?

hello there~~ i don’t know when this was sent bc i fell asleep so sorry for the late response! you’re welcome! Ep. 10 was super fun and i’d be happy to explain the plays! uwu

answers below read more for spoiler purposes~

warning: long post

Overall synopsis of both plays:

they are both based on the idea of the Genpei War, which was a Japanese civil war that happened between 1180-1185 (Heian Era).

the main differentiating factor between the OG and Newborn plays is that OGs went with a tragedy route while Newborn had a happy ending.

i can’t go very deep into the OGs’ play characters bc not much was revealed about them aside from appearances and names. but i’ll provide a description for the newborn characters

however, i do know that Hiro and Tenma portrayed the same character: Minamoto and Yoshitsune/Kurou

for historical accuracy purposes, I will not be referring to them by the character name and instead by the actor’s name

OG Play: Yume no Ato (The Trail of Dreams)

it starts off with a “man”(Hiro) asking a travelling monk (Zen) to listen to his story that was happened “hundreds of thousands of years ago”.

along with the “man”’s narrative, it takes you back to his story as a flashback format.

you then see a fight between the shogun’s portrayed by Reni and Yuzo where Yuzo is killed by Reni in the war. Reni then questions why humans fight each other when they’re all humans.

we then see the rest of the Taira clan including Syu (a samurai), Zen (also a samurai), Hiro (main samurai/shogun), and Kasumi (presumably Hiro’s lover (yes, he cross dressed))

Kasumi begs Hiro to take him/her with them to war which almost never happened during that era.

the group eventually begins to lose trust in one another bc they suspected someone leaked their travel routes to the enemy, causing them to get ambushed. Syu eventually suggests to drop Kasumi from the group bc she’s a female.

Kasumi pleas for Hiro to take her with them. Hiro refuses bc he doesn’t want to endanger her, but she pleas even harder and succeeds.

The group was ambushed once again but they realized that no information was leaked, it was all the enemy’s doing. Syu and Zen stayed behind to hold them off while telling Hiro to escape.

Syu was eventually killed in battle, before dying, he promised his rival (Zen) that their rivalry will be saved for their next life. Zen proceeded to fight the rest of the battle alone (with no conclusion)

Kasumi was also eventually killed in war and was dying in Hiro’s arms. Before she died, she promised him that she’ll be reborn a white bird in her next life, where she’ll be able to fly free and follow him wherever he goes. (top notch voice acting btw)

Hiro has lost everybody in the war, as his last effort, he announced his name aloud to the enemies around him, bascially saying that, “I’m right here, if you want to kill me, come get me!” and fought as the lone soldier in his clan.

the play now returns to the “man” telling the story and the monk. the monk is surprised on how detailed the “man”‘s story is, stating that it’s as if “the man saw it with his own eyes”.

the man gives an interesting quote here, saying that: “once upon a time, there were friends who fought together upon this land and talked about their dreams. But now, they are nowhere to be seen, and is only left to rot alone.” which is a direct reference to the OGs with Mankai imo

it is eventually revealed that the “man” was the spirit of Hiro, who was unable to pass on because he was bound by his regrets and guilt for the death of his friends by taking them to war.

the monk had a realization moment, before he helped Hiro’s spirit move on by showing him a pure white bird, indicating Kasumi.

the stage direction eventually shone a light towards the audience, symbolizing that the audience is their “light” where Hiro eventually walks toward and disappears

after Hiro disappears, the monk revealed himself to be the spirit of Zen and he also follows after Hiro towards the light and disappears.

the play ends with an empty stage, as if nothing was ever there in the first place.

Newborn Play: Shinsetsu: Kurou-den (The New Legend of Kurou)

Tenma portrayed Kurou/Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a samurai whose personality depends on his alcohol intake. If he’s drunk, he is very cool, calm and collected, fearless, etc. but when he’s sober, he is a major wimp and scaredy cat.

Tsuzuru portrayed Benkei, a samurai who is a friend of Kurou, who is also responsible for switching Kurou’s personalities by providing him with the alchohol. He is a very smart, savage, and strong samurai.

Misumi and Masumi portrays brother samurai characters, Tsugunobu and Tadanobu. They eventually swore loyalty to Kurou after he saved Tsugunobu from dying.

Chikage portrayed Minamoto no Yoritomo, Kurou’s long separted brother and the antagonist of this play. He plots to get rid of Kurou so he can become the sole ruler of the Minamoto clan.

Kumon portrayed Yasuhira, a young master who had to shoulder the burden of his household after the death of his father, the previous master of the house.

Tenma changes his personality several times throughout this play. For my sanity purposes, drunk Tenma (the cool one) will be represented with D•Tenma and wimp Tenma will be W•Tenma.

the play starts with Tsuzuru challenging D•Tenma to a duel as an attempt to get Tenma’s sword as part of his victory collection. He lost the duel and was asked by Tenma to travel with him to see the world together. Hence, the iconic comedic duo was born.

it then gives us a montage of all some of the adventures between Tenma and Tsuzuru.

D•Tenma and Tsuzuru eventually arrives at Kumon’s household to work for them where he was introduced to Kumon through Kumon’s father (still alive at the time)

that is also where they meet Misumi and Masumi and challenged each other to a friendly duel. This is where W•Tenma was revealed to the both of them.

Tenma got the chance to meet Chikage where Chikage wished for them to work together and rule the clan as brothers (ha)

the four of them then went on an expedition together. In that expedition, Misumi almost died (fell off a cliff) but was saved by D•Tenma, that was when Misumi swore his loyalty to Tenma.

the next day, the group went to help some allies who were having a hard time in battle.

unfortunately, W•Tenma wimped out and wanted to escape. This resulted in Misumi getting injured from protecting him. The brothers now had to retreat bc Misumi needs to heal his injuries.

the group now realized that they’ve been banished by Chikage.

the conflict of Tenma having to rely on alchohol to remain strong also surfaced.

when they finally returned to the mansion, the enemy attacked him and Kumon escaped, leaving Tenma and Tsuzuru to fight.

they were outnumbered, so Tsuzuru opted for Tenma to escape first so he can confront Chikage.

W•Tenma didn’t want that, and was hesitating. Tsuzuru was going to force some alchohol in him, when W•Tenma actually fought back for once in his wimp self. This resolved the conflict of Tenma’s personalities and he can now he semi-strong without alcohol (character development whoo)

and so, Tenma went to confront Chikage head-on. They fought, and Tenma managed to escape (don’t know what happened to Chikage.)

Tenma arrived at the sea shore where a raft was placed. There, he met up with Misumi and Masumi, who opted to follow him. When asked about Tsuzuru’s whereabouts, Tenma told them that Tsuzuru went and fought those enemies alone.

just when they all thought Tsuzuru died, he appeared, alive and well.

the play ended with the four of them escaping on the raft and continuing their adventure of “seeing the world” together.

September 18: 1x15 Shore Leave

Shore Leave tonight! Because I need it. I had a lot of thoughts on this because it’s so ridiculous and wonderful.

That planet looks like a giant green screen. Which is appropriate.

I could watch this back rub scene on a loop all day. Fellas, is it gay to want your First Officer to really dig it in there?

Captain going to his quarters to work from home today.

Oh-ho, what is this, the little seen Sulu & McCoy dynamic.

Plant nerd Sulu wants information on all the greenery.

That rabbit is so great. Fun fact I had an LJ icon with that rabbit back in the day.

Honestly this is such a great concept for an episode. Like I don’t have any really deep notes or feelings about it but both as a sci fi idea (a very high-tech ‘amusement planet’ that uses unseen machines that can read your thoughts to manufacture delightful things for you) and an entertaining yarn, it’s so good. I also think the characters are really on point.

It’s so good that Theodore Sturgeon could put that back rub scene in there and no one even noticed.

“Stardate.... something.....uh, point three.” I laughed, I really did. Stardates do not and never have made sense and I like that even Kirk is so tired at this point he’s like “yeah whatever.” Mood, Sir.

Kirk is canonically a workaholic. He’s the kind of guy who checks his email on vacation. Who answers emails at 11pm. With his husband next to him like to rest is to rest jim!!!

“On my planet, to rest is to rest.”

Kirk thinks he’s so cute. He’s looking really handsome today himself, but Kirk always looks at his best when he’s got his heart eyes face on.

“A crewman’s rights end where the ship’s safety begins.” We need that on a poster today in 2020 for Reasons.

Love how unamused Kirk is and how amused Spock is. Ya got played, son!

Oh, look, it’s a random gun. Too bad Chekov’s not here to claim it. (He’d love this planet btw.)

YFIP: Captain Kirk. Cancels shore leave mere minutes before it’s supposed to start.

Gunshots!! Sulu found the gun! And he’s so excited! And then Kirk takes it away like the Mean Dad he is.

One thing I wonder about this planet is at what point do the objects, people, etc. cease to exist. Do they just eventually wander back to the trapdoors and.... get recycled? Do they have this built in? Is that not... weird? Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: Shore Leave. And do the inanimate objects have to be returned?

I love this Kirk Academy back story and we were robbed--ROBBED--of it in AOS, fight me on this. “I was downright grim.” Bullied by an upperclassman?? Who liked playing dumbass pranks?? Sounds like enemies to lovers, slowburn, 20k, to me.

Love how absolutely deranged Finnegan is though.

Yeoman Barrows’ rape fantasy.

Kirk stops to a pick a flower! To romantic music!! He is so soft and I love him byeeeeeeeee.

And then the flower reminds him of his Academy girlfriend Ruth. Who is uh obviously played by a woman in her 30s and yet hasn’t aged a day in 15 years so 19 year old Kirk with an older lady y/y?

Love his confused face while she’s kissing him though.

He’s so dazed as he calls McCoy and then just kinda... gives up lol.

Bones, too busy flirting to remember the white rabbit he’s supposed to be chasing. Don’t say “a whole army of Don Juans”!!!

His eyeshadow is also on point today. He’s so shameless, trying to not-quite-watch her as she changes into the Princess Costume. No one ever remembers how flirty McCoy is but he IS.

Oh look, a big kitty!!! Very beautiful and nice.

Sulu lol, just casually thinking of samurai. Bet he wishes he still had that gun now.

Spock having a hard time beaming down reminds me of that meme “Now I will always be a child of two worlds.”

Spock’s thought process is hilarious. “Our transporters were about to stop working so I thought, hey, how about I strand myself too--just to be with you, Jim.”

McCoy and Barrows holding hands.

They’re supposed to spread out but Kirk and Spock go together obviously.

Oh no, the knight! I’m sure Kirk told Spock not to shoot bc he knew his phaser didn’t work but it still looks like ‘I got this baby.’

There’s no one to say “He’s dead Jim.” :(

Barrows shouldn’t feel guilty; it was Bones’s fault for conjuring the knight in the first place by saying the word “knight.”

Lol can’t Sulu run the tricorder? Like the obviousness with which they switch out Sulu and Spock so K and S can have their moment is... Something.

“Are you saying that this is a plant, Mr. Spock?”

Lol just poking the dummy in the face.

“Funny air vehicles.” Don’t have planes in the 24th century I guess?

Don’t say strafing run!!

When Kirk thinks of the Academy, he thinks of Finnegan first apparently. And now begins an incredibly long fight sequence. I actually like the TOS fights in general quite a bit because they’re SO choreographed. So for me they are more fun than fights now, which are such a mess I don’t even know what I’m looking at. But even so--this one is VERY long.

And VERY homoerotic.

“Jim baby.” “Sweet Jimmy boy.” Resting on top of that cliff in a ‘draw me like one of your French girls’ pose. Kirk’s shirt just like.... REALLY randomly ripping right the hell off.

“You couldn’t find your head with both hands.” ???

I love this Irish tune. Apparently this was the first ep this composer worked for and I think he did a really good job all around! I rarely notice music but I did in this one and always in a good way.

Spock’s makeup is great as usual. He and Kirk are on the same expository wavelength.

Spock, don’t say the word “tiger”! You can clearly see it is on a leash lol. Lots of gratuitous touching as Kirk and Spock run away. My mom and I agree that Spock liked the tiger, though. He does like cats and big animals like iChaya.

All the crewman line up except for Angela. Really dropping the ball there.

Love how the amusement park manager shows up just after Kirk told everyone not to think about anything. “Okay, who imagined the man in green robes?”

Spock’s posture and expression.... so good. He clearly loves the idea of an amusement park, and, given that he describes it as a place with “many fascinating things” to do/see, I think he would, canonically, love it.

“The more complex the mind, the greater need for the simplicity of play.”

THE MUSIC WHEN MCCOY SHOWS UP WITH THE GIRLS OMG.

He’s such a slut. One whole love interest plus TWO imaginary showgirls? Tone it down Mister.

I can’t believe one of the girls goes to Spock. He’s like “What do I do with this?” Then hands her off to Sulu because Rodriguez is already helping Angela move on from her dead husband. So now Sulu gets two ladies.

Spock doesn’t need any more shore leave, because he got to spend some time with Kirk, solve a mystery, and see a tiger. That’s all the fun he needs!

The last scene was pretty unnecessary (except that I guess without it, it kinda looks like Kirk is just...leaving the Enterprise for his old girlfriend lol) but at least we get the awkward implication that Kirk, McCoy, and Sulu had a lot of sex, and some random fake laughter.

(Sulu absolutely canonically had a threesome.)

Next up is the Galileo Seven, a Classic TM Spock (and Spock & McCoy) episode.

aikatsu on parade episode 9 spoilers (even better than I expected....!)

we’re already on ep 9?!? it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long.... also I’m really excited for this ep, I love venus ark

lmao YES Ichigo just ran through the door after them. as expected of a protag!! great!!

throw them in the brig!! ...does VA have a brig? I feel like we’d’ve def seen it in stars if they had so maybe not. maybe neo venus ark has a brig though (hi I just woke up)

no brig.... a closet. there’s musical instruments stored in there... if this were a different show, they’d start a band while waiting to be returned to the shore.

sis!! Saya was there to research (interdimensional?) rumors of aikatsu pirates but also got caught. she can join the band

Bon Bon Voyage... heck yeah I love this song. bet it’s the ed too

:o so Mikuru is already there and acquainted with Elza somehow! oh. bc Elza appeared in Mikuru’s flower shop to steal her for VA... was it aikatsu pass magic? did she just sail there??

Saya says the experiment is almost over, that soon Raki will be able to travel freely btw aikatsu worlds without needing to use the special pass. this doesn’t especially answer anything, but at least it confirms that’s what her goal was in giving the pass to Raki...?

Mizuki appears on a speedboat! (where did she come from?? the same universe??) Elza declares that everyone must follow her orders and fight to the death for the right to leave the ship! why did she have to throw a table knife. that’s gonna be an expensive repair

Raki has to win against Mikuru and Mizuki... what a fool I was for imagining for a second that we’d see a Raki-PP-Ichigo song. anyway when not if she loses, Elza gets to do whatever she likes with them... so forced to join neo venus ark, right? but then they go through the aikatsu pass door so it won’t matter, right?

I just choked on my soup what the fuck!! what the fuck!! Raki and Ichigo are going to perform together bc Elza left a loophole in her competition rules!! I can’t believe this day would come so soon I’m so excited what are they gonna sing!! ahhhh

Rei proposes that maybe Elza set up this crazy competition in order to see the moment when Raki is forced to evolve by the stakes and the legendary idols surrounding her! sounds like something Elza’d do.

I knew they’d do suncatcher bc ocean and it’s similar to Bon Bon Voyage and the ep title and stuff but if it isn’t my least fav Mizuki song. I love her voice in every other song but this one is just. not great

omg they even got a unit name!!! Lucky Strawberry!! exactly what Johnny-sensei would name them... I hope they’re both in Pisces coords....!!!!

they’re.... not. oh well.. I’ll just record that version at the arcade for myself. but they are still super cute together!! I’m glad they went with Akogare Customize too, the lyrics are good for Raki (actually really good for Raki and Ichigo together, now that I’m thinking about it).

oh man I really loved that stage..... currently Ichigo and Raki are my 2 fav aikatsu MCs so it was really wonderful to see them together 💖 I was right to be excited about this ep........

not good enough for Elza, though (or the audience, but there was literally no way they would have written that Raki won that competition, even paired with Ichigo). she orders just Raki alone to immediately leave NVA before going to fawn over the others.. typical Elza, haha. I’m really excited about this too though, bc now we know Raki’s next PR! it’s a Venus SPR, just like Elza... that means she’s going to somehow earn Elza’s approval first. I’m really curious how she will.

anyway... Mio is suddenly able to get phone calls from the friendsverse immediately before they all warp there in Mizuki’s space-time boat. so the Aikatsu Convergence has almost completed... idols from the 3 schools are together everywhere. Raki’s pass is constantly glowing? obv aikatsu is presenting this as Saya’s Evil Plot for dramatic reasons, but is it actually going to end up being a bad thing? I can’t imagine that it would... the abrupt change from middle of the ocean to Star Harmony canal was sure something though

what, no Bon Bon Voyage? oh well, Precious is one of my most fav aikatsu endings ever though so it’s ok (now that’s a good Mizuki song!!)

BWAHFHUHAH just when I thought it was all over, suddenly in the aikatsu aphorism:

Mikuru: “There sure are a lot of flower beds on Neo Venus Ark!” Rei: “Mikuru, enough of that. Would you dance with me?” Mikuru: “Huh?! You’re making me blush.”

...this is ofc just to make a pun on the saying hana yori dango (substance over style), hana yori dance (dancing over flowers). thanks.

I’m pretty sure, like 99.99999999% sure they said the title of the next ep is ‘Aikatsu Top Dan’ (the aikatsu elite), but I did hear Aikatsu Top Gun first........... idk what’s happening except it involves HIBIKI AND HIME-SENPAI AND Elza AND Mizuki, so I’m predicting it’s gonna be my fav ep. also Raki is a kuroko? is it a drama ep....??

Dream: Silent Monk Jean Luke Picard

I dreamt of an alternate backstory for Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Captain Jean Luke Picard.

I think that there was more to the beginning of the dream (vaguely a Star Wars feeling, and snips of Doctor Who’s (Matt Smith) Doctor and River Song). I don’t remember it, though, so we’ll start with the most vivid part.

During the first frosted day after the Winter Solstice, a small parade leaves a city that’s encircled with a stone wall several stories tall. At the front of the parade sits a young woman adorned with a long, mostly white, and East Asian looking robe. I think she was carried on an open litter, but it could have just been a fancy seat on a decorated cart. The precession eventually reaches a small open area in a nearby forest. Inset into a stone wall or cliff covered in vines was a wooden door, the old style with iron across it and a ring instead of a doorknob. Someone reverently lifts a piece of debarked log that was in a cart right behind this young woman. Walking over with it in both of their arms, protected like a child, the person gently places it before her. Staring at it for several seconds, she eventually shakes her head “no”. The person then picks up the rejected log and repeats the act a few times, rejection following each one. Eventually, someone goes up to the young woman and whispers to her that they have no more logs. She looks disappointed, then motions them to start the process again. She settles on the second this time around, countenance somber. She then finally speaks, announcing to some “Silent Monk” that they have brought wood for his fire and that they pay him respects. After a long moment, the door opens wide, but no one can be seen. And with that, the parade turns back to the city and leaves.

(I’m not sure how I know that the logs were brought by the attending parade members--maybe one per family?--but it might have been someone narratively explaining it?) From there, the scene goes to the Enterprise with Captain Picard and Riker, etc. They’re stopping at some planet, probably for “shore leave” or something similar, based on what I remember of people saying. Picard is being... weird about this planet for some reason, though... Like, more pensive and broody. Still, he makes his way down via the transporter like the rest. The crew ends up, however, in a strangely familiar looking place. An old European-esque city with stone walls several stories tall... except that it’s now spring or summer. (I felt like maybe around the equinox?) Eventually, Picard makes his way out of the city, alone, and wanders down the same path as the parade had on that cold winter day. He makes it to that same grotto, looking on it with an expression of memory.... And then the story shifts to that cold winter night again. Something unseen picks up the debarked log, bringing it into the fire lit room, door shutting behind. With the closing, a man appears, no longer invisible, and it’s Picard. From there, I get a mix up of events and information; I don’t really remember what came in what order and how... but I’ll try my best. Picard was raised by 3 witches--his mothers. They encouraged him to become the Silent Monk because the position extends the lifespan of a human somehow. Because they’re witches, they have long lives, but for some reason couldn’t extend his (perhaps it’s a species related thing). The downside to being the Silent Monk is that you aren’t allowed to be seen or heard by most people. There are exceptions, which his mothers actually qualified as, but I feel like the special cases were... powerful... Like, the Silent Monk could only interact with “godlike” beings. Whatever they were, they’d apparently have an indicator based on their clothes to show he could talk with them. Anyway, a woman ends up in his clearing, he sees that her clothes match the thing that indicates he can interact with her, and he lets himself be seen by her and strikes up a conversation. They talk over a long period of time, end up falling in love, and then he proposes to her. It’s then that she breaks down and confesses that she’s a con artist, thief, and prostitute, crying and apologizing. He just goes “As long as how you acted and talked with me was genuine, I still want to be with you...” So he decides to leave his role as the Silent Monk... which infuriates the witches. The longer you remain the Monk, the longer your lifespan is extended, so leaving that role means leaving a potential for immortality... So they set a trap for the fiance, setting a curse on her after she transports back down to the planet from some business in space. The curse traps her in flux between materializing and “being stuck” in the transport. It essentially, SORT of preserves her in time, but his fiance is stuck in an agony of being pulled apart, yet reconstituted. To top it off, the mothers then comment about how “the baby” will be fine as well... revealing that she’s 5 weeks pregnant at this time. The mothers then tell Picard what they did and that they’ve already moved her onto a ship to send her far away until he completes a certain amount of time as the Silent Monk. He tells them no, then goes to figure out how to join Star Fleet in hopes that a combination of luck and his long lifespan will allow him to stumble on his fiance once more. His long lifespan ends up being a huge factor in how he was able to become the Captain of the Star Fleet flagship, apparently, btw. Things start to fall apart in my memory here, but I do know he manages to find out that his fiance has been back on this planet the whole time. He gets to her and finds that she’s not heavily pregnant because the curse only SLOWED her aging; it didn’t completely stop it. I also vaguely remember something about the Q being the reason her clothes were “right” for him to talk with her. Like, he stopped time and altered her attire right before Picard first saw her because Q knew Picard and her were meant to be? Something like that. Then the dream shifts from being, like, a 2 Part Star Trek TNG ep quality to grade school play... and it’s even more confusing. Like, I don’t know if Picard managed to save her? Slightly break the curse? If the curse was wearing down on its own and she actually found him? Not entirely sure, but I like to think he breaks the curse.
