At the risk of sounding like a cringe nerd or whatever I think the image of the drivers helmet is pregnant with metaphor to me. It's a protective totem. It's a talisman of ruthless speed and precision. It symbolises this, almost warrior like mentality that the drivers need to embody, something akin to the armour of a knight from the middle ages. When the visor is down it brings a ferocious, remorseless anonymity. It takes away the personhood of the driver and it's all about their dexterity on the track. The helmets are so personal to the driver, evident because of the effort they put into designing it. The helmet is their representation of their self when their faces are no longer visible. They chose the motifs that best represent them as an idea to the people. Lewis' amethyst inspired helmet, because he wanted the helmet to look like something that would be found in a museum many years later, Sebastian's helmet with doodles from his children, Charles designing a helmet inspired by his father's old racing helmet and adding pictures of Jules, Daniel's helmet with the honey badger imagery, Valterri wearing a helmet his girlfriend designed. There is intention in the helmets, they represent meaning making. Oh I am so emotional about it.
