My head cannon endings for all the Hilda cast post finale (Spoilers for season 3)
Astrid
She remains in her home, never moving away. However she makes sure to visit Hilda often, which has become easier now that she's learned to fly again. She also doesn't get to lonely as she invites the Pooka to like with her and helps him practice shape shifting. When she dies she is buried where the fairy mound once was to be closer to her family.
Raven
He travels the world but always returns to Trollburg, on cold winter nights he joins Hilda and her family for tea and games, maybe the yule lads join in too. On his travels he spreads the story on Hilda far and wide even long after she's gone.
Tryla & Baba
They remain at the mountain most days but do ecompany Hilda on adventures during her weekly visit. They still live there long after everyone else is gone, telling tales of Hilda to the next hundreds of generations of trolls.
Anders
He continues living in Trollburg, working on wall and city maintenance with the bellkeeper. He never gets back together with Johana but he does try and be a better dad to Hilda, including taking her on that camping trip.
Johana
Begins selling her paintings to people, she also starts painting things from her and Hilda's adventures, including the Fae Ilse, which she still thinks about often. When she dies Hilda burries her at the fairy mound with Auntie Astrid, but she keeps a lock of her hair in a locket. One day, in the far future when Hilda has finally moved on she hangs that locket at the remains of the cabin.
Tontu
Just keeps doing what he does mostly. Going on adventures with Hilda occasionally but mostly keeping to himself. He remains in the house for a long time, even after Hilda had died.
Alfur
Keeps writing reports for the northern counties but he also begins working with Gerda and the safety patrol, his days are busy but that's how he likes them. When he dies, if elfs even do, he would be given a funeral pyre by the lost clan and Hilda returns to the northern counties to scatter his ashes.
Louise
Would go on many more adventures with the trio and would start to develop a crush on David, one that David would reciprocate. She would eventually become a wildlife photographer.
David
Started researching entomology and now runs an insect focused wildlife centre near the sparrow scout building, enjoying a more peaceful and quiet life than most of his friends. He also assists the linworm in a construction of a new garden on sparrow scout property, sometimes the two of them and Louise have tea together. He was the first to die out of the four and was buried in Trollburgs graveyard, later Louise would be buried with him when she died.
Frida
Finished her training and became a fully fledged witch. She would take over running the Trollburg library from Kaisa after Kaisa was appointed to the witch council. When they were teenagers she and Hilda started dating but they never decided to get married.
Hilda
She still goes on adventures in her teenage years, it wouldn't be Hilda if she didn't. She and Johanna also practised flying with their fae magic. She always makes sure to keep in touch with Astrid and Victoria. She continues to paint and make music and becomes a freelance artist like her mum. Twig also grows big enough to ride when he gets older. She lived in her apartment in Trollburg until her death. She and Frida were buried together at the overgrown remains of the cabin
Woodman
He's still there, deep in the woods. even after everyone else has long since died, perhaps he tells the tales of a mysterious blue haired friend to spirits to the passersby.
Or perhaps he would tell you that if you walk deep enough into the woods, you could find an old forest glen where a cabin once was, and you can speak to her spirit yourself

HILDA SPOILERS
johanna was about the same age hilda was at the start of the series. this is like if instead of Hilda beginning with her being chased by and then befriending a fearsome troll, it began with her mum inexplicably disappearing forever and us being left to assume she was abandoned
all she wanted was to play and dance and eat pancakes and run around in the woods with her family. and she doesn't even remember. all she has is glimpses of 'what she was like,' as a child, no real memories of how much they loved her to hold onto. and now she's a half-fae adult trying to live a very normal human life with no idea why it's so difficult, why she's always drawn back out to the woods, why her daughter is too. it was her tenth birthday. i wonder if she got any gifts

[The Hilda household and Kaisa are having dinner]
Hilda: This is a lovely dinner, Mum.
Kaisa: Yes, it’s been so long since I’ve had a good home cooked meal of this quality.
Johanna: Oh thanks. I have dessert baking but I need to get the last part of it. I didn’t realize that I didn’t have it until it was too late and then you arrived and it would’ve been rude to make you wait longer.
Kaisa: It’s fine, I wish I’d known so that I could’ve gotten it on the way.
Johanna: Oh no no, I’ll deal it, it won’t take that long to pop in the store, if you don’t mind watching Hilda for a bit.
Kaisa: I can do that.
Hilda: I could go instead.
Johanna: No, I don’t want to risk you getting distracted by some creature and you then using what I sent you for to solve the problem.
Hilda: That’s only happened (begins counting on her fingers)………okay, I see your point.
Johanna: I’ll be back before you know it. Take care.
[Hilda and Kaisa say their farewells but as soon as the door closes, Hilda turns towards Kaisa]
Hilda: Just so you know, I have a lot of friends.
Kaisa: Frida and David, I know.
Hilda: No, I mean, Trolls, Giants, Elves, The Great Raven, a Lindworm, just to name a few. And I can call in a favor whenever I need to.
Kaisa: Are…are you threatening me?
Hilda: Are you going to break my Mum’s heart?
Kaisa: No.
Hilda: Then, no.
[Johanna comes back in with a small bag and heads to the kitchen to finish dessert]
Johanna: It’ll be ready soon, so what did my two favorite people talk about while I was gone?
Hilda: I was just telling Kaisa about my friends.
Johanna: But she already knows about Frida and David.
Hilda: Yes, but I thought she should know more about my friends.
Kaisa: Hilda was most informative about them.
Johanna: Awww, my girls are getting along <3

"And my troll mum really did take good care of me."
I love the found family trope so much
And this sorta does confirm that Trylla is kind of like another mother to Hilda, which just makes me 🥺

Anders: What was it like? Being one of them (a troll)? Hilda: Some of it was really fun. The wild part. Running free, feeling like nothing could stop you or tie you down. Anders: That's how I like to live. beat Hilda: And my troll mum did take good care of me. Anders: What about your troll dad? Hilda: I didn't have one. Trolls don't have dads. Anders: They dont'? Hilda: Nope, not even the kind you want around.

I know you don't like the idea of Hilda's father actually appearing, but would you at least be interested in finding out who he is and some other information?
No.
The fundamental reason I'm opposed to anything involving Hilda's dad is because he doesn't add anything to the narrative, and in my eyes, can only harm it. "Who is Hilda's father" is a question that the series doesn't need to resolve, and should never have tried to answer.
For starters, one of the biggest things I like about this show is that Johanna is a single mum and that's okay - it's not entirely swept under the rug, it's acknowledged and she gets judged for it by Frida's parents (because some people are judgemental about non-traditional families) - but it's made clear repeatedly in episodes like The Troll Rock and The Yule Lads that Johanna is the only parent Hilda needs and that there's nothing wrong with her being a single mum; Frida's mum is explicitly a bad person for trying to call Johanna out on it.
But that's not to say Johanna is the only family Hilda has or the only person she needs; on top of her friends she has Alfur, Tontu, and Twig, all of whom are important to her and vice-versa and all of who form part of a really well-done family dynamic. It's important to me, in light of that, that Hilda's dad doesn't matter - he's not in her life and that's all that needs to be said because she already has all the family she needs (this isn't something specific to Hilda, but it's something it does very well - for another example, see Phineas and Ferb. They're brothers and have an older sister and a mom and dad, and the fact that they're actually step-siblings doesn't change that; you don't see people asking who Ferb's bio mom is because it doesn't matter Linda is the parent who's in his life).
On top of that, I think that nothing the show can realistically do would be better than leaving the question open. Hilda is aimed at kids 12-and-under; it doesn't play down to its audience, but by its very nature it can't get into some heavier topics. There's a very loose implication in the graphic novels, and to an extent in the show, that Johanna has some kind of rough past, and that's enough.
Maybe Hilda's father was a horrible person, or abandoned the family; maybe he died and Johanna doesn't like talking about it; maybe Hilda was even adopted or something. Those are all far, far more interesting possibilities than the route canon has chosen to take, but they're also the kind of things I want to see explored in fanworks, not in the show itself. Because it's central to the family dynamic in this show that he isn't in Hilda's life, and that he has no place in her life, and that's okay; Hilda has all the family she needs already.
I have my own headcanons, and I'm choosing those headcanons over Season 3; I hope this puts any questions about why to bed. I'm sorry if this is harsh or negative, but it's how I feel. Please don't ask me anything else about Hilda's father - if you want to be excited about Season 3, that's fine, but it's just not Hilda to me.

Poor Johanna. The mum is finally updated!!!
Johanna is a tired mum with little to none patience for anything nor anyone and with a drink problem. After the kidnap of Hilda, she had to take care of Baba after not being able to open the entrance of troll country and deep in her core, she knows that Baba wasn't the one to blame, but she sure didn't show that in he way of acting towards the little kid.
NOW, WHICH CHARACTER SHOW I UPDATE NEXT?

woo more mattie sketches
the first one is @ewwgene-fitzherbert’s fault, as usual
sooo context bc my dumb sketches come with lore now:
.
1) ok this one isn’t strictly canon, i just think it’s funny me and dee both like media with vastly different interpretations of a rat king lmao. anyway you can’t tell me that if tlou was a thing in this universe mattie wouldn’t have seen her sis playing it, and heard her talk abt her pal the rat king, and got her lines crossed a little bit
real talk though, mattie would absolutely love the (hilda universe) rat king - the only thing better than one weird rodent is hundreds of them
2) not a ton to say about this one - arwen is sensitive to loud noises, and mattie tries to help her out wherever she can
3) mattie upholds the family tradition of destroying johanna’s reputation
so in johanna and kaisa’s defence...you try explaining to a 6-year-old why your family is on good terms with this one troll and her kid because of a changeling spell that happened before she was born. I think that by this time, johanna’s made peace with what happened in Mountain King and (very slowly at first) formed a natural friendship with trylla, and the habit of hilda and baba visiting each-other has carried on over the years, knitting the two families closer together. mattie knows what a step-sibling is from her friends at school and has connected the dots. she’s definitely implied to at least a couple people that her mum used to be married to a troll
also i got tired before i could finish drawing kaisa quietly trying not to lose it in the bg but she’s there. in spirit

Watched Hilda season 3 and Hilda And The Mountain King and I have thoughts for an au that includes the magic of The Incident(s) combining into one thing and affecting Hilda VERY greatly, I'm gonna copy-paste these texts from my convo with my partner (keep in mind, this isn't the first time I watch this movie)
I kinda wanna see troll! Hilda with her normal human mum, just trying to figure things out.
I wanna see Johanna struggling with Hilda who is so obviously *scared* and I wanna see Hilda break something by accident and just *freeze* and I want Johanna to deal with Hilda treating everything like glass and how obviously distressed the bells make Hilda
I wanna see Johanna try to hug Hilda and I wanna see Hilda hesitate and I want it to break Johanna to see what's happened to her daughter
I wanna see Hilda struggling with awakened Fae instincts due to the magics being connected and I want Johanna to see the difference after Hilda turns back and I wanna see Johanna doubt her daughter and then feel guilty for doubting Hilda who flinches at bells, goes in a trance like state when someone tells her their name, Hilda who can no longer say no to anything because everyone knows her name
Maybe i've consumed too much Danny Phantom content, when I see a non-angsty fandom simply existing, I think of all this 😭
Ok but i REALLY wanna see Johanna tell Hilda to do/not to something and Hilda visibly tries to not obey but is trembling and then locks up and kind of mechanically does it and it just makes everyone distressed
Omg I'm at the scene where Hilda is starting to experience the pain every troll experiences when they hear the bells
She's so scared, poor child :(however. I wanna focus on the part where she says "these things are gonna kill me" and I wanna amplify it, I want her to be SO scared of death. She's in a new body seemingly so invulnerable compared to her human one and I want THIS to be the moment she's sure she will die
I want her to get an intense ptsd flashback when she hears bells as a human. I want them to be just a bit louder to her than to anyone else. I want her ears to be left ringing everything she hears so much as a tink on glass.
I want her to yearn for her life as a troll occasionally because now that she's human again she's bound by so many things and the people around her are telling her to do things and her true name isn't pronounceable to trolls, they can't tell her to do things, she can feel in control of her body in ways she never could as a human
I wanna see Hilda breaking down and yelling for the call of the troll mother because it gave her a sense of connection to the land that she's always had, and still has after becoming human again, but that is amplified as a troll. Then I want her to break down bc the best mother she could ask for is already right there >:]
I want to see a visceral breakdown as Johanna takes care of a daughter who isn't hers (which is canonically happening as I type this, but it's filtered through a children's tv show lens and I wanna see the real thing)
The best thing throughout this whole idea is the (made up) language barrier and the fact that hilda stones-over in daylight
Hilda hiding under the bed from the sun and Johanna coaxing her out, only for Hilda to stone over once she's in the light and Johanna crying bc it's visibly painful for Hilda 🤭
Watching Johanna bang on a wall where a bunch of trolls dissappeared yelling "give her back to me!" At the specific troll who took her daughter is great, therapeutic, I love it. 11/10
OMG FRIDA AND DAVID, I HAVEN'T EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THEM
OMG HILDA AND JOHANNA REUNITE BUT THEN JOHANNA LOSES HER AGAIN WHILE HILDA FIGHTS TO PROTECT HER! THEN THE PROPER REUNION!
Hilda still speaks human?! Nooooo the angst potentialllll
Hilda is openly displaying troll strength without accidentally hurting Johanna and running away crying while Johanna calls out for her as she cradles a broken bone or two, where's the angst :(
OMG HE ALMOST KILLED HILDA
HE'S HOLDING A CHILD HOSTAGE
Hilda is human again
She's also naked as a newborn babe/ref
HILDA STILL SPEAKS TROLL?! THE IMPLICATION THAT SOMETHING IS LEFT OVER FROM THE MAGIC- AUGHHHH

back to Hilda (I’m obsessed again oops). The way it drops hints about things is great. Like the massive beast in the first season being mentioned in the Tide Mouse episode and then continuing to pop up. The weather lady being eerily good at predicting the weather. And don’t forget the biggest and most important one: that maybe trolls aren’t monsters at all. Which truly comes to a head in the movie.
but I also like that we see so clearly Hilda’s mum try to support her. She can’t see alpha at all, but just trusts Hilda that he exists. She believes Hilda about the great raven before seeing it. And what’s important about this is that it’s so heart breaking to see them struggle in the second season. With her mum struggling to support her wild and adventurous nature but wanting to keep her safe. Ugh so good.

just finished Hilda Season 3
lee!hilda ler!johanna ler!trylla
Overtime, Johanna and Trylla managed to make peace of what happened in regards with the changeling swap. They both sat for tea attempting to hold a conversation with their language barriers, Hilda was normally there to translate. Wait where is Hilda? Where is Baba?
"It's quiet, too quite" said Johanna standing up and putting down her tea.
Trylla wearily looked around for them, normally when Hilda disappeared, it was a bad thing. Suddenly they heard a thud. The two mothers than to the sound to find their two children roughhousing. It first started with Baba playfully shoving Hilda and as most siblings end up doing they began play wrestling. Hilda had Baba down and the two were giggling uncontrollably at the silliness of their situation. "Where did all this energy come from" pondered Johanna.
"Ever since Trylla gave me this lollipop, I feel like I could beat up a tiger" Hilda went on proudly.
Johanna side eyed Trylla for an explanation. Eventually after some struggle, Johanna learned that humans may act differently with certain Troll foods and in this case, Hilda had a huge sugar rush and had enough energy to run a mill.
Hilda and Baba came to a stop in their scuffle and hugged.
"We stayed a bit too late, so I'm wondering if we could stay the night" asked.
Johanna looked towards Hilda who translated that Trylla agreed.Trylla just put down Baba to sleep and now it was Hilda to be tucked in, but the girl was being a bit stubborn.
"Hilda, its time to sleep" said the brunette fairy.
"But Mum, I'm not tired at all"whined the blue haired teen.
"You're acting like a baby" stated Trylla, just then a light bulb popped up.
"If you're gonna act like a baby, I'll treat you like one" Trylla declared with a smirk and hands shaped like a claw. Johanna didn't quite get the memo until she saw the clawing motion and so did Hilda who tried to get away but was immediately picked up like a small cat.
Before Hilda could protest her hands we placed above her head, large stone fingers carefully tickled her ribs and her mum's hands tickling her sides and stomach prompting the blue haired fairy to squeal and her laughter echoes amongst the cave. The two mothers' plan was to tickle all the energy out of Hilda. Trylla's fingers trailed up to Hilda's armpits and Johanna went under Hilda's shirt to scribbled her nails on her daughter's stomach. Hilda threw her head back and dissolved into cackles and snorts.
"Tickle, tickle, tickle" Johanna cooed.
"NOHO TEAHAHSING"Hilda managed to get out in her fit of laughter
Johanna knew that it would take a while to tire out Hilda so she decided to speed up the process by blowing raspberries into her daughter's quivering tummy. Hilda weakly tried to tug her arms away but it was no use, she was stuck their laughing and honestly she didn't mind it too much, but she was running out of breath.
"STAHAHAAHAP"shrieked Hilda, who got what she wished for. Hilda was picked up and placed in her sleeping bag.
"Alright Hild-" Johanna was interrupted by the sound of small snores, indicating Hilda was asleep.
"Good Night Hilda's" Johanna whispered softly as she put a kiss on her child's forehead.

A Random thing I wrote lol
About Hilda and her Mum.
Johanna stopped only looking down.
'This is it.........I'.
Johanna broke down falling to the ground and tears rained down.
'She is in there and I can't get too her.......Hilda'
She said hitting a fist into the ground.
Hilda heard her mom's cries she couldn't move she was trapped in this stone room .
She took her troll fiats beating on the walls but no mark was left.
'Mum I am coming please wait'.
Hilda could feel rage fill in her.
'Let me go please so I can save my mum' .
'But I am your Mum now' the large troll stepped out.
'No Johanna is my Mum'
'No Hilda I am your Mother now'

I don't think this is what they planned when the trolls were first written, but I was watching Hilda S2 ep1 (The Troll Circle) and the way the trolls were treated really felt like a parallel of some sorts to how neurotypical people (especially teachers and parents) act to neurodivergent people (especially autistic children). Think about it. The only real "defenses" the humans have against the trolls are ones that unfairly harm them, the bells and the spray. Instead of protecting anyone, all they do is at best annoy the trolls and at worst hurt and enrage them. On top of this, when Hilda tells Alhberg that the bells don't do anything, he agrees. The humans use the trolls' anger to vilify them and make the humans look like heroes for "dealing with such horrifying creatures". This is very reminiscent of adults using methods such as shouting or ABA punishment as a way of getting autistic children to be obedient, but all it does is send us into a shutdown. This makes the adults more angry, which makes us feel hopeless and lash out, and nothing gets done.
On top of this, when you think about it, the trolls are never the first to attack. In the pilot, Hilda was chased because she had tied a bell to the troll's nose. She had essentially tied a torture device to a sleeping creature and ran away when it wanted her help. When the school was "attacked" by a troll in episode four, it was just because David had taken her baby and she wanted it back. The trolls almost always act out in self-defense because they can't communicate their wants and needs.
As well as this, think back to how the troll mum swapped Hilda with her daughter. She wanted her troll child to be human, so she could have a better life. This is very similar to parents making their children mask so that they won't be discriminated against or bullied.
Also, as just a side-note, the only humans that actually show any compassion for the trolls are characters like Frida, Hilda, Johanna, Alfur - in short, characters that I see as being heavily autistic-coded.
This isn't very concise but you get my gist.

003: Hilda
Tumblr media
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character: She's my favourite character of all time. I don't think I can understate that; I love Hilda with all of my heart, and I haven't been this attached to a character since I was about 14 XD
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Frida primarily, but I also like poly Hilda/Frida/David and I have a couple of crossover ships for her :))
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Johanna - when their relationship is firing on all cylinders (see The Bird Parade, The Troll Rock, The Black Hound, The Deerfox, or The Yule Lads) they have one of if not the best parent-child dynamics in all of media. Johanna isn't perfect, but that's part of what makes her such a good mum; she accepts when she isn't and makes up for it; and Hilda's not perfect either but she still loves and supports her. I can really only think of one other series that handles a parent-child bond as well as Hilda does, so it's something really special to me. Also Alfur and Tontu my beloved :))
My unpopular opinion about this character: I have like 3 of these but I think probably the biggest relevant one atm is that her dad has zero place in the show, at all. Some things are just better left unsaid; Johanna is a single mum who does the best she can for her daughter, and as a parent, she's the only one Hilda needs; any answer they could give about her dad (and I know exactly what answer they are giving about her dad) undermines the whole dynamic between them unless the concretely say that he's not in her life and doesn't matter, which they won't. There's nothing they could say about her dad (within the tone & target demographic of the show) that would be better than the implications of him not being mentioned. Hilda doesn't need a father, she has plenty of blood and found family to take care of her, and who she is shouldn't be dependent on some hitherto-unseen extra character. I think Season 3 has decided to introduce him because of all the questions about him, and I think it's a mistake that this show will struggle to recover from in terms of quality and meaning.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I've written it more times than I can count and I have two more ideas at least, but Johanna acknowledging she was too harsh on Hilda and that their arguments in Cauldron Island/Fifty Year Night/Stone Forest were her fault. We're past it now, and it seems Johanna has gone back to the character I love, so hopefully this won't be needed, but I still wish it had happened.
Favorite friendship for this character: Frida and David - actually I think David specifically he is such an incredible friend and he really deserves the world. Also Twig :))
My crossover ship: Erin from The Secret of Black Rock, Aster from Aster & The Accidental Magic, and I could see her having a one-sided crush on Greta from Greta and the Giants. Non-romantically, I have given her sibling dynamics in various AUs with both Simon Laurent and Hazel from Infinity Train and I am deeply attached to both of them.

Have any thoughts about first-time parenting shenanigans with Hilda, Frida, and baby Frankie? It's cool if you haven't thought of anything, I was curious and like hearing your thoughts!!!
(Sorry this took so long! I've been very busy and it's been so hot here that words just weren't working for me for a bit. Gonna bulletpoint these bc it's still too hot to think too much.)
Over-vigilance and over-thinking. How much is too much coddling? When should they start letting Frankie cry throughout the night to learn how to sleep alone?? When do they transfer him to an actual bed???
Because Frankie is the child of a witch and a Familiar/Troll Changeling, he's a bit... odd. He starts eating solid foods a lot sooner than regular babies because a) his teeth come in earlier and b) said teeth are sharp, due to the Troll DNA. So it's a bit of a struggle because should we let our baby eat these things so soon?? Eventually they figure out teething with ice cubes spelled to not break into dangerous shards is the best method.
That baby moves. Frankie learns to walk really quickly (I, myself was only crawling for around two weeks before I was on my feet) and just. Gets everywhere. Both Frida and Hilda have to both run to catch up on time.
Superstrength! With Troll heritage, Frankie is very strong, for a human. Baby-proofing involves magic in order to make sure he doesn't break into the regular baby-proofing.
Neither of his mums really know if he's more sensitive to the sun because of said Troll heritage? He can't turn into a Troll himself, but is he more prone to sunburn?? Hence, giant baby sunhats when outside and lots of sunscreen.
This baby has so many chaotic aunts and uncles and family friends. Believe it or not, I think Kaisa would be the most responsible babysitter out of the lot. Frankie thinks she's the bee's knees and she can always distract him from a tantrum with magic. Uncle Tontu is more likely to think bringing a toddler into Nowhere Space is a good idea. (Hilda: YOU BROUGHT MY BABY INTO A MAGICAL MAZE DIMENSION AND THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA???)
Less shenanigan-y and more wholesome, but family hikes! They've got one of the those baby carriers for your back that one of the two mums will put on and go for hikes in the Wilderness. Frankie loves these, and is absolutely enamored by all the wildlife.
