(TS3) Rags to Riches 100 Baby Challenge

I love a good Rags to Riches and 100 Baby Challenge, so I figured I would combine them into one for some additional hardships and gameplay. These are the rules I have made for myself if anyone wishes to use them for themselves.

I do plan on maybe posting some screenshots of this gameplay, so if you’re interested, look out for the tag #foster challenge!

INTRODUCTION

You are a young woman who has been thrown into the world with §0 and nothing to your name – and have been fated to have an insane number of children. It will be difficult enough to provide for yourself, but when you have to provide for 100 children, you'll definitely have to learn to be resourceful. Whatever the reason, I wish you the best of luck!

REQUIREMENTS

Sims 3 Base Game

GOAL(S)

Have 100 babies with different Sims in as few generations as possible.

Have §100,000 in your household funds.

GETTING STARTED

Select a world to live in. You may play with any world. If you choose a custom world, you may have to populate it yourself, so keep that in mind.

Create your matriarch. She must be a Young Adult to start. You may choose any traits and Lifetime Wish.

Move your matriarch into an empty lot of your choosing or bulldoze an existing lot to start. The lot can be any size. Keep in mind you will be expanding on this lot and using it for the duration of the challenge.

Set your money to §0 as soon as you place your matriarch.

RULES

Your matriarch cannot get a job. She must earn money through collecting, fishing, painting, etc. You may enroll your matriarch in a self-employed job since it is based on how much money is earned. You may also enroll her in the Daycare profession (Generations) since it offers a weekly stipend, but keep in mind you will have to care for your own children as well.

You may use your phone. The smartphone update with University Life can offer more options for making money and meeting other Sims through the Social Networking skill.

Babies cannot be aged up until their birthday. Toddlers may not be aged up before their birthday unless they learn to walk, talk, and use the potty. Children and Teens may not be aged before their birthday unless they earn an A in school.

Teens may get a part-time job, help care for the infants, and help out around the house.

You may use any mods you wish. Challenges are supposed to be fun!

If you travel by taxi, you must subtract §20 from your funds for each trip. There are mods that do this for you automatically.

Your matriarch is not allowed to hire a babysitter at any time once the first child is born with the exception of going to the hospital to give birth. You must wait until you have at least one Teen in the house who can care for them.

Your matriarch is not allowed to get married while in the household or move other Sims into the household.

You may not sell the camera (Island Paradise) or time portal (Into the Future) given to you. You may keep these items in your inventory or delete them.

All traits for your offspring must be randomized. You may not choose their traits.

You may not influence the gender of your babies.

No cheats are allowed except for resetsim and moveobjects. You may use familyfunds to set your starting funds to §0 at the start of your save.

Your matriarch cannot have more than one pregnancy from any given Sim.

When your matriarch becomes an elder and is no longer able to bear children, the youngest daughter will continue the challenge. You may choose to move your matriarch out of the household at this point if you wish.

Once aged up into Young Adults, the children must be removed from the household.

If you have Generations, you may not send your children to Boarding School.

You are allowed to go on vacations, but everyone in the household must travel with you. You may not accept the Free Vacation opportunity (Generations).

Pets are allowed in the household. Keep in mind you will have to care for them on top of your children.

Aging must be on. Babies must have a minimum of two (2) days. Toddlers must have a minimum of seven (7) days. Children must have a minimum of ten (10) days. Teens must have a minimum of fourteen (14) days. Young Adults and Adults cannot have more than forty-five (45) days. Elders can have however many days you wish.

You may use one item from Aurora Skies (Head Start Playpen and Local Motion Toddler Walker) per generation to help toddlers learn skills, and you may alternate if you wish.

TIPS

Choose a lot near a fishing spot or community garden. This can help bring in some extra Simoleons without having to travel.

Mind your reputation. Having multiple romantic interest will earn you the "Naughty" reputation. This can make it so Sims will not want to come over or reject your romantic advances. Asking Sims to "Jist Be Friends" after they get you pregnant can prevent this from happening.

Utilize your children. Children can help with fishing, collecting, painting, etc. Teens can help bring in extra income by getting part-time jobs or staying home and caring for the infants. Children and Teens can also help with the chores to keep the house clean.

Give your matriarch traits that can be useful such as Artistic, Flirty, Family-Oriented, Green Thumb, etc.

Use Lifetime Rewards! Fertility Treatment and Extra Creative are good ones.

A sims 3 Lepacy Challenge. About to add in Late night for that! If you don’t know what it is. It’s basically a legacy. But you start with a base game only and every generation you add a new expansion.

The save I've been cheating on you with: A classic rags-to-riches playthrough in Monte Vista with Roberta McKenzie, aspiring Alchemy Artisan, seen here enjoying a breakfast of leftover tofu dog on a fine summer's morning, as one does when one lives in a 4 x 5 shack without even a stove.

This is partly @foreverasimmer's fault for starting one of her saves there and reminding me how much I love Monte Vista. I had planned to play my final planetary legacy generation in Sunset Valley, but seeing as that one will be Jupiter, maybe MV would be more fitting.

Rosie dreamed of a nice cold shower breaking through the heat of the summer’s day. Just a nice, cool sprinkle to wash off the sweat. The cold water splashed across her face and blew up into her nose —

“Pluh — ugh! Pluh!”

Yeah, that wasn’t a dream. It was the horse sniffing her face after having taken a drink of water from somewhere. Where had she even found water??

Rosie sat up, hastily wiping the oat-and-hay-smelling dribble on the inside elbow of her shirt sleeve. She glared while the mare stared off into the middle distance, still dripping, like a dramatic, majestic moron.

They had walked all night, as far as Rosie’s combat boots would go. She had once thought they were her most comfortable shoes. Now she wished she had worn the old sneakers she’d used in high school gym.

The mare didn’t seem at all fazed. The farther they got from the track, the happier she seemed. Maybe she was just glad to be walking somewhere other than an exerciser. 

They left the road when the sun started to come up, when cars would be able to spot them and reports to police made. There were enough twists and turns and canyons in this part of the state that they could get out of sight pretty easily. But as the sun rose, so did her worry for her equine companion.

Maybe she shouldn’t have done this. Maybe the mare was better off with the horse beater. At least there she had food and water. What was she thinking?? She was probably going to get them both killed—

The mare moved again, whacking her muzzle up against the side of Rosie’s head as she did. This horse had absolutely no notion of how big her head was – and, seemingly, no notion of how precarious their position was, either.

“That was fair,” she told the mare. She’d made the decision. The only thing to do now was to live with it. The mare probably hadn’t been trying to say that, but the reminder to get out of her head and pay attention to what the horse needed was a good one either way.

She reached into her backpack for the hoof pick and brush she had brought. When her cell phone came out with it, she shoved that into her back pocket habitually, too. She stood, but the mare’s demeanor had changed, and even with her limited experience, Rosie could tell.

“It’s okay,” she told her, holding the tools up for the mare to see. “I’m just going to clean you up. See? No big deal.”

The horse reached out to sniff and blow the huff of air out. Though still tense, Rosie thought she looked receptive enough. She got closer.

“I’m gonna try your hooves first, okay?” she continued, though she hardly knew why. Maybe she just thought her calm and explaining voice might help the mare feel less cagey. Like she wasn’t hiding anything. It would make her feel better, even if it did nothing for the horse.

She reached for the mare’s shoulder and moved her hand down the back of her elbow and leg, not bending over until she had to. But as she stretched, her shorts pulled over her backside, and suddenly, her cell phone buzzed in her back pocket.

The mare reacted so quickly, Rosie couldn’t even adjust. She pulled her leg out of Rosie’s grasp and bolted, knocking Rosie to the ground in the process. She didn’t go far; a few feet away she turned and faced Rosie. Her ears were flattened and the whites of her eyes flashed as she stared at Rosie, blowing sharply in warning. She stamped a front hoof threateningly.

Rosie didn’t even attempt to stand. “Hey, it’s okay,” she said, holding her now empty hands up. When the mare’s ears flashed forward curiously and then back again, Rosie took the opportunity to reach slowly into her back pocket and pull out her phone.

“Look,” she offered, and threw the phone a few feet away from her onto the grass. “No more phone. Okay? It’s gone.”

It took several minutes, but Rosie took her time. She sat with her hands raised and empty, not even attempting to stand. The mare took long moments to inspect her, and at any slight movement from Rosie, she would raise her head and go back into threatened mode. But luckily, Rosie had nowhere else to be. She just waited, watching the mare for any cues that she was downshifting into a less heightened state of wariness. When at last the mare let out a heavy blow of stress and began to look at the grass for a tasty morsel, Rosie slowly collected herself and stood.

She picked up her phone and immediately switched to Settings, turning off every instance of vibration she could think of, and then turned off the device again entirely. Her jeans must have pulled across a button tightly enough to turn it on.

She turned back to watch the mare, who even now kept one eye on Rosie. Her owner must have used a buzzer during training, a small device that shocked the horse to spur them on faster. They were illegal during races, but it was a lot harder to spot them during training. And once the horse expected them, you didn’t really have to have it on you during the race to make them afraid you were going to use it. Her cell phone vibration only sounded like a buzzer, and the mare had become aggressive.

She’d never really had a strong opinion about them until that moment, figuring they might be useful for stopping aggressive colts or breaking up fights or panicky moments. But to use them so often and consistently that a horse would spook at even the suggestion that she might have one?

The resolve that had waned when she first woke up solidified as Rosie watched the mare watching her. Her hand tightened around her cell phone.

“No more buzzing,” she assured the mare, or maybe herself. “Not ever."

Honestly, I'm relieved. This game was still looking so rough and I'd feel much more comfortable with a June release than this coming out in 6 weeks.

I was watching a video from SatchoSims* and he talked about how LBY is more just a compilation of gameplay features without any gameplay and he definitely pinpointed my main issue with the game despite my excitement for it. I just don't know what I'm going to DO or what I will want to do because they haven't really done a good job of explaining the rules and structures and goals of the game (aka what the game is about).

I'm still excited for it and will definitely play it in June and am eager to check out the modding tools but yeah, what are we doing?

The Sims was a time management game. You had to figure your shit out and meet your basic needs all while juggling other mini challenges and responsibilities and TRY to become successful which would then unlock cool shit to buy or do that you would have the time to do because the money and rewards and perks you grinded for allowed you to do it.

And then TS2 improved on that by focusing on interpersonal relationships and making that more complex so that Sims felt more unique but also had to focus more on mental health and well-being and the drama that comes with interacting with other people.

Then TS3 took that even farther by basically unleashing chaos all around you with an open world so you have less control over what is going on so while you are grinding away to create a dream house for the Sim you want to marry and grow old with, you head over to the park and see your future spouse making out with some asshole in zebra print pants! And then on top of that, they deepened skills and hobbies so Sims have soooo much to do so that life goals are so much more diverse (though I will admit this came at the expense of interpersonal relationships). People often say that they wish TS3 had TS2's hobby system but in my opinion, it not only does but it's infinitely much better than TS2's. I would argue that TS3 at its core is a game about hobbies and interests.

I love that LBY seems to be wanting to improve on TS3 (because TS4 definitely didn't) and give us a true life simulator but I still don't understand what the game is about. They show off how many traits they have and how we can mod in our own traits but what do the traits means? If a character has a Difficult Childhood trait, how is that going to affect their ability to form relationships, fall in love, be a good parent? They said we could have truly homeless characters to play Rags to Riches challenges. That's awesome! Can we see that? How does the economic system work? Could it be integrated, for example, where household taxes and bills actually go towards community development? Like THIS is gameplay. I don't want to see another treasure trove video or someone doing work tasks. Those are features, not core gameplay and if it is then I'm afraid Rod Humble is making TS4 competitor, not TS3 which would be a shame.

*I don't know if I like him or not, but he has good viewpoints compared to the other high-profile Sims 4 YouTubers who at this point are practically on the Maxis payroll desperately trying to pretend that game is interesting because it literally pays their bills 😭😭

Moonlight Falls was a small town where the locals seemed to be close-knit. They all seemed to know each other, meaning she was quickly recognized as a new face. It felt like all eyes were on her when she ventured to Sam’s Market Diner to sell her fish. Most of them merely glanced at her as they went about their business, but she could sense the judgement they seemed to be passing.

Only a couple of townspeople bothered to introduce themselves. Dulcie suffered through probing small talk, offering up only simple responses without going too much into her story. Thankfully the people she talked to seemed friendly.

I'm alive!!!

Hello in 2024. Easter Sunday has always been my Simmer's Return time for some reason. Holy shit my bio still says I'm 19.

I'm not even sure if anyone still follows this blog anymore. I MISSED the community so badly, I missed sims, and I missed writing sim stories. This blog turns 11 in June and it's so surreal to realise this, honestly.

Where have I been? Well, mostly sinking the past 4 years into the terrible, terrible game known as Destiny 2 over at @flowers-of-io and writing fics for it on AO3. I'm 23 now, BA of Journalism & Media Studies, and I work in a newspaper. This is my rags (13 yo Simmer with broken English) to riches (well, still below minimum wage, but at least they PAY ME for WRITING!!!!) story.

I'm happy! I think it's important to say, because over my time in this community and running this blog I've gone through some of the darkest periods of my life, and I want to make a statement that Things Change and Hope Exists. I'm in a long-term relationship, living on my own, doing a job that I love, and pursuing therapy that helps me immensely. And I write every day. I'm happy.

Am I back? Maybe; that depends if my TS2 gets a grip and stops crashing randomly every now and then, because I've given up on trying to battle with my laptop to stop overheating when I so much as open TS3. Am I going to finish Postcards from Nowhere? I'd love to, but we'll see about that as well. I'm incredibly emotional to be posting here again if I'm being honest. This blog has been with me for almost half of my life and it's so odd to be coming back having left it half-desolate, feeling almost like a stranger in my own home. I truly hope anyone is still here.

And even if not, it's good to be back. I missed you.
