Not to knock the ending of The Jersey Devil or anything, (Mulder and Scully's piano love theme, my beloved), but why on earth do they rent a car to drive to the meeting at the Smithsonian ??? It's literally a ten minute walk from the Bureau ??? Am I not American enough to understand this

i transcribed the sonadow bumblekast episode so you don't have to
youtube
hopefully the formatting isn't really weird lol
Kyle: So this time, for Pride Month, we get to address the hypothetical fandom ship that's probably helped more than a few Sonic fans figure out their sexuality: Sonadow! A lot of straight fans probably had Rouge or Sally be their awakening, so don't throw stones.
Ian: True, true.
Kyle: Shadow is not quite in a place where it's easy to imagine him having a healthy romantic relationship. But it is honestly a bit problematic to have one character shift until they're suitable for another, unless it's a mutual situation. How would you execute the character growth for Shadow and Sonic that would most help enable Sonadow?
Ian: There would have to be an understood vulnerability to Shadow, he would have to open up to a degree that makes him more accessible at a personal level, and it doesn't take much? We've seen hints of it throughout his appearances, it would just need to become established, and that I think is all you really need to build that bridge because Sonic is casual and accepting enough as he is, and he's going to allow Shadow to be who he is which is kind of prickly and standoffish as you would have that occasional moment where Shadow lets his guard down and is more empathetic or emotionally available. But otherwise they would both play it fairly cool and aloof I think (lol).
Kyle: Yeah, they're together. What of it? So? Big deal. I like it.  There are obviously a lot of different popular ships in Sonic. In order to make one really stand out, you'd probably need to really spark intrigue on it before pushing the two characters together. How would you arrange the first key romantic spark that was intended to drive the fans towards wanting them together?
Ian: I think it stems more from the characters already having good chemistry. I mean you look at the fandom in general and the fleet of ships that are sailing and all of them are based off of the fact that these characters are fun in their interactions regardless of who we're talking about. So if it were an intention of building something from scratch, for most of the Sonic cast, I think the work's already been done and there's already a great deal of trust and mutual respect between most of the characters. It would just be a matter of realizing that there is more than respect, there's more than kinship, there's a romantic affinity, and for one of those characters to make that realization and start to pursue it in their own particular way.  And then it becomes a question of well, is the object of their affection going to reciprocate? And if they don't, which leads to an interesting story of, now that they are on this path, yeah, they know that this is an option, do they come around to it? Or do they not? Are both characters kind of interested but they don't want to take that first step and so you have that carrot on a stick that is ever so effective for however long you want to run it?
(laughing)
Kyle: There's nothing that gets, uh, Sonic's motor running more than being called a faker. Apparently.
(more laughing)
Ian: Oh, he'll show you how real he is.
Kyle: Oh, no! This is a family show, sir!
(even more laughing)
With that idea fresh in our minds, how would you make it official for the two of them?
Ian: God, if that ever came to pass. (lol)
Kyle: I feel like it would have to be kind of like, understated? Like it would just kind of happen?
Ian: Yeah, I've, they're both so cool and aloof in their own way, I don't see them making any kind of dramatic declaration or ... suddenly turning all mushy and lovey-dovey, it's not who they are. Um ... I, you know, the adventure concludes and they're standing side by side on the hillside looking at the sunset and the wreckage ... and they share, you know, a compliment, and instead of like a fist bump or a "see you next time" and, y'know, one of them runs off ... maybe they throw arms around each other or something and just kind of stand there. Again, they're not gonna be all "mweh mehmehmeh" ... tonsil action, it's, I see them being very chill about it all.
(lol)
Kyle: Also, keep in mind everyone, this is all just ... 'fan ideas', this is probably never gonna happen, it's very unlikely, we're just having fun here.
Ian: It's hypothetical situations that I am approaching as reasonably and as authentically as I can.
Kyle: Yes, yes, just to keep that in mind, just keeping everybody on the same page here.
Ian: I am not endorsing, I am not unendorsing,
I am just answering questions. Everybody simmer.
Kyle: Let's assume that for whatever reason Shadow decided to seek out advice from the following, and whoever he asked has to answer with an honest attempt at the best advice they could offer. How would Professor Gerald, Dr. Eggman, the Commander, and Black Doom advise him?
Ian: Gerald would be the most wholesome and effective, I think. I think he understands people better than ... certainly a lot of his family. Uh, and would advise Shadow to look inward to ask himself what he really wants, and to ruminate on that and then act with caution, you know, don't be hasty on this particular thing. Like all great research, it takes time to get the results that, you know, you want, or the results that will come to be - don't take anything as a given, but don't be afraid to pursue the truth, whatever that may be.  Eggman would scoff at the notion and, you know, sarcastically offer to set him up on a date, making it quite clear that it would all be a trap and an ambush and whatever. The Commander ... I don't see as being a very romantic individual, but I think he might be direct about that, right. He would say that his partner was someone he managed to find for himself, but that was largely thanks to her, and her efforts, because he was kind of clueless about this, but Shadow is also kind of in the same boat so you know, maybe ... at least be aware of your surroundings? If someone is prepared to make that gesture, be ... ready to receive it and understand it for what it is. How do you do that? He's not quite sure how he figured it out himself but you know, he's not good at this sort of thing.  And Black Doom would again, scoff. Love is a weakness, it is a distraction at best, a malady at worst, it is ... an affliction of the mind. An illusion created by inferior beings to facilitate necessary natural processes. You do not need love, you do not need anyone, you are my Ultimate Weapon now go get me them Chaos Emeralds.
Kyle: (laughing) Those damn fourth Chaos Emeralds! They're all fourth!
Ian: (mimicking Black Doom) Honestly, Shadow, what's love got to do, got to do with it. What's love but a second hand emotion.
Kyle: (laughing) Well, we all know Shadow can't resist a dying wish. Let's say in the aftermath of a terrifying evil scheme, Eggman once more had to team up with the heroes to save the world, but he died in the process, leaving Sage and her brothers in the care of his uncle and uncle-in-law. Assuming that if money were real, GUN would pay the kind of money that would keep a classy act like Rouge on staff so the boys don't need to change their heroics too much, how would they do as parents to Sage, Orbot, Cubot, and after a while if she so chose, potentially Belle?
(THIS IS METAL ERASURE >:( whatever he doesn't wanna be part of this family anyways)
Ian: I'm a little lost in the wording on who is acting as surrogate parents here.
Kyle: I think it might supposed to be Sonic and Shadow ... but Rouge is also there? I think?
Ian: Well I mean someone would have to look after the kids because it ain't gonna be them.
Kyle: (laughing) No, I guess not?!
Ian: I mean, Sonic would Sonic would kind of show up for birthdays and events and to check in but he's ... he's not the stay at home dad. He's not the stay in one place dad, he's the dad who gets his steps in, if you catch my meaning.
Kyle: Okay, no, it was more an example of they’re ... willing to pay Rouge ... so they would be willing to also pay them ... so ... but ... I guess Rouge would not be the caretaker. So ... they would have to be the caretakers ... I don't think it would go well! Luckily, I think they're self-sufficient ... for the most part ... (starting to lose it)
Ian: I mean I can't really see GUN letting them off ... interestingly, to anyone. They would be on facility. But it would be Sonic and Shadow weighing heavily saying they're not captives, they're not tech to be assimilated into the greater GUN network, they are wards of your facility, right? Right? Which again, Sonic would be checking in on occasion to make sure that it's going well. And maybe Shadow would kind of become a satellite agent of GUN, just keep tabs on everything, check in on the others to some degree ... but ... we wouldn't have a case of My Two Dads on this one, they're not the parental types.
Kyle: We probably shouldn't trust GUN with child care. Probably not. Even robot children.
Ian: And ... you don't even need them to be a pair to get the kind of ... bickering parental - conflicting parental guidelines in this scenario. Sonic would be very much, ehhh let them stay up, let him eat ice cream, let them do whatever they want, Shadow's like no, they need discipline, you're going to spoil them.
Kyle: Worst fathers ever.
Ian: Belle I ... I, again, I can't really see as a parental role but I could see her as the put upon babysitter. She tries her best to look after them and keep things under control but ... honestly ... they're Egg tech, they're not going to cooperate all that much.
Kyle: ... Yeah ... yeah I guess ... Belle would have to be the older sister and she'd probably end up being the one who does most of the work. Ugh.
Ian: Someone who tried to stop the caper of stealing the Commander's loafer or something. "I'm gonna get in trouble you guys! Stop!"
Kyle: Alright. Shadow is immortal, he will probably outlive Sonic. Unfortunately, given Sonic's lifestyle, that may not be that hard ... although given Shadow's first adventure, it could go either way. Sonic would probably understand that Shadow copes with things like this better when he has a sense of meaningful purpose to focus on. This seems like the type of thing Shadow would project onto his partner if it came to it, so what would each other ... so what if ... so what would each of their dying wishes to each other be?
Ian: Morbid.
Kyle: (lol)
Ian: You're going for the beautiful sadness type of thing I think. Uh, Sonic's would be ... what he wishes for everyone, is to be true to yourself and to live free. Perhaps that be true to yourself ringing a little more resoundly in Shadow's case, you know, don't close yourself off ... again. You know, be free to open up to someone else again down the road, and just be honest with yourself and be free to make that choice.
Kyle: Open your heart, Shadow, it'll be alright.
(laughing)
Dammit! You would do that.
Ian: Yeah, I absolutely would.
(more laughing)
As for Shadow ... he would want Sonic to endure, you know, to just continue to carry on ... to not be defeated by anything. To find a way to escape death and just continue being, because, you know who else can replace him? Nobody. He would want that to endure forever.
Kyle: Yep. Good thing Sonic's got extra lives.
So Sonic and Shadow have gotten engaged, and they're trying to figure out how to approach their family name. Would Sonic take Shadow's last name, or Shadow take Sonic's, each keep their own, or each add the other's with a hyphen? Given Shadow's right to certain other last names, there could be a timeline with a Sonic Robotnik or (losing it) Sonic Doom.
Ian: No, they'd go with their current surnames, and as a sign of solidarity, they would just swap them so it would become Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog.
Kyle: Right, okay, okay ... good, good. Yeah, okay, it'll be fine, as long as Shadow doesn't take Maurice or something we'll be good.
(laughing)
Sonic and Shadow the Hedgehog. No relation.
Ian: We could hyphenate it! Sonic the Hedgehog-Hedgehog! (Shadow voice) Don't make me regret my decisions.
Kyle: Too late, he already does. He already does.  Sonic has a great found family, and presumably in order to get Shadow to a point where he could date Sonic we'd be dealing with a much more Team Dark take on Shadow, who also has that. How would they both adapt to regularly hanging out with each other's found family?
Ian: Uhhh ... The Sonic side of things is always very opening and it's ... open and accepting. And that's ... hilarious ... to the Team Dark side of things, because you can take such advantage of that. I think there would be attempts made on Team Sonic's side to incorporate everyone into the big happy family and eventually it would come to the understanding that, you know, there's appreciation ... there's respect, but there also needs to be distance. It's okay that they only get together for like, the holidays, and then they all keep to themselves. Nothing against anybody it's just, you know, oil and water don't necessarily mix all the time. And the time Rouge stole the Christmas presents ... Knuckles’s still a little salty about that one.
Kyle: Aw. Poor Knuckles.  I play a lot of DnD with my boyfriend, he's big into it and happy to have another person for his DnD groups. Meanwhile I always enjoyed the little bit I got to play, but didn't get the opportunity as much in the past. It is unfortunately, for him, very much a ... forever DM for the group he has assembled. With this new little family we've assembled around the Sonadow pairing, who would be their forever DM? Omega is a war forged Barbarian, right? I mean yes. I mean ... you mean in the game? I mean he could be whatever he wants in the game, but in real life, yes.
Ian: I think you could make a case he's war forged Barbarian in every connotation of the word.
Kyle: Pretty much!
Ian: Uh ... I can't remember how we ... because I feel like this ties into just general DnD, we've been asked this before ... I would think Tails would be the DM.
Kyle: Yeah ... yeah, Tails is the one who has the most, uh ... patience, I think, to really learn stuff. Amy maybe.
Ian: Maybe ... I mean, he would like to construct the campaigns, he would be the better rules lawyer between the two of them. Um, I think he might be a little more of a stickler than Amy, I think Amy would allow for a little more rule of cool, but I don't think Tails would be obnoxious about it, you know. If you roll a one and things have gone very badly, he'd be trying to help you figure out a way around it. It's like, you know, okay, this is a bad situation! What do you see around you that could stop you from being on fire? Or, Amy! Don't you remember you have this particular Scroll of Healing or whatever? I - I haven't played DnD I don't know.
Kyle: I mean, yeah, that exists, it's fine, you got it.
Ian: He wouldn't be a "rocks fall, everyone dies" DM, but he would be someone who's like, no, you can't fudge the numbers, you miss. "How do you mean I miss, I'm right in his face!" You rolled a two, what can I tell you!
Kyle: He might think about "rocks fall, everyone dies" for a second, though, once again fed up -
Ian Every turn, Omega's like "I KILL EVERYONE IN THE ROOM." Even the party? "YES." No, you can't do that! "IT IS IN CHARACTER." I don't care!!!!
(laughing)
Kyle: Oh man, yeah, I mean, I don't know how long it would take for him to get fed up with Monty Python references but ... (lol) Probably not very long. Uh, and it turns out Monty Python is an actual python comedian in their world, and ... (losing it again) I'm here for it. That'd be cool. Time for the coveted Digimon question! I don't know who's coveting the Digimon questions, but alright, I guess Twilord is. In Digimon, there's a concept of DNA digivolution, where two digimon can fuse together. Sometimes this phenomenon creates a mental link between the Tamers and lets them glimpse each other's thoughts and feelings. This admittedly varies a bit so you have a lot of creative freedom on your solution. Assume the two of them were closeted for lack of it having come up yet, from those whose Digimon starters you might've ... you might choose to have DNA digivolve with Sonic's or Shadow's partners ... which partners figure it out from the basic mental connection, and of them how would they handle knowing without being told? I'm assuming that ... like, they have not confessed their love for each other but they somehow use this to figure it out.
Ian: And really ... Digimon ... it's not asking about the Digimon themselves, it's acting as Sonic and Shadow are the trainers, right.
Kyle: Right.
Ian: Uh ... The hardest question of this is who is more obtuse between the two of them ...
Kyle: (LMAO) Yes. That's the answer.
Ian: Shadow ... in general ... might be a little quicker on the draw ... so he would make the realization and that might prompt him to ... open up ... whereas Sonic just already kind of took it as a given, it wasn't really a realization to him, so he didn't really think much of it.
Kyle: I guess ... Yeah, I guess that kind of fits. I guess that fits.
Ian: (Shadow voice) Once we were linked, I cam to a realization ... and well, now that I know it's reciprocated, I guess I can say I'm really into you.  (Sonic voice) Oh yeah, I already knew.
Kyle: (laughing) Yeah, everyone's into me. No, no that's not what I mean -
Ian: (Shadow voice) It means you don't have a romantic bone in your body.
Kyle: (LOSING IT me too dude) I think the idea ... apparently .. I'm getting word that the idea behind this question was that they haven't told anyone yet, and their friends find out this way.
Ian: Ohhh, okay.
Kyle: Okay. Well here's the thing ... Most people in Sonic's world are very accepting and everything, so I don't think it would ... be a big deal? (lol)
Ian: Yeah, I mean, if anything ... the biggest reaction would come out of Amy. There might be shock she found out ... Well, shocked at first, but if she found out, and they haven't really opened up to each other yet about it, she would go hardcore matchmaker.
Kyle: Oh, no! (laughing)
Ian: Like, if they both feel that way, and they aren't being honest with their affections, ohhhh no no no, she will not let that stand. Nope. She will move heaven and earth to see love realized.
Kyle: (laughing) Even if it's not Sonic loving her, I guess, huh? (more laughing)
Ian: Disappointed, sure ... but, y'know, fine. What she wants is for him to be open and true with himself, and true with others. Love is a powerful force in the universe, and she will see its will done.
Kyle: Yeah (lol), she is a true ally, yes.
Ian: A real intense ally.
Kyle: (laughing) Kind of frightening.
Ian: Again, put down the torches and pitchforks, this is a hypothetical, this is for funsies. Let it be.
Kyle: Yes, let's have some fun.
Ian: Moving on, he's got a question for you, Kyle.
Kyle: Alright.
Ian: So in terms of romantic progression for fictional characters, you would say that after the romcom where the parents get home together in the sitcom where they all have to live their lives together ... can you please pitch me three episode ideas for the up and never coming sitcom, The Hedge Hogs, for me to rate?
Kyle: Oh, no. Uh, I didn't read this before we started! Uh ... hm ... come up with these on the fly ... um ... I'm like, not great at that. Let me think here ... Let me think here …
Ian: Let me help you out.
Kyle: Okay, hit me.
Ian: Fast and the Furious ... they both run out to get takeout quickly and they deal with incorrect orders.
Kyle: Okay -
Ian: Becomes a conflict of their personalities where Sonic's like hey, I'll take the pickles off! And Shadow's like he said no pickles.
Kyle: Okay .. ! (laughing) Yeah, that's good. That's good. Um ... Hm ... hmm ... God, I really am bad at this (lol). I feel like there has to be one where they're trying to drive somewhere and they can't decide ... they'd like get lost, and then one of them is like, you don't need directions - it'd probably be Sonic, Sonic would be driving and he refuses to ask for directions, and Shadow's like trying to get him to pull over and ask for it.
Ian: (Shadow voice) Please, pull over.
Kyle: (laughing) Yeah, yeah ... I mean, that's another trope of sitcoms. (lol)
Ian: Here's one for you ... Surprise Control - Sonic and Shadow are each trying to prepare a birthday surprise party for the other, not realizing that, son of a gun, they share the same birthday! No, they've never actually discussed this or put it together. Hijinx ensue.
Kyle: (laughing) Do they, actually? - No, nono, Sonic Adventure 2's like a few days before ... but, you know, it's funnier if they do.
Ian: Rouge is the first one to figure it out and she runs interference to make sure nobody clears it up for them.
Kyle: (laughing) Yeah, yeah, I like that one ... Alright, let's see -
Ian: Turns into a big blow up where they're both angry that neither of them knew what each other's actual birthday was, and then the tension is broken when Omega pops out of the cake like Marilyn Monroe. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE TWO OF YOU.
Kyle: (laughing) And then ... he sets off the fireworks. Which are actually just …
Ian: Omega, not inside the HOUSE- !!!!
Kyle: (LAUGHING) Which are actually just more DAKKA.
Ian: Has to be inside an apartment complex so Eggman can pull a Newman(?). "Hello, Sonic."
Kyle: (losing it) Ohhh, nooo ...
Ian: "I hear you've got the prime time cable package. Mind if I come in to play games on it?" ... Yeah, sure I guess, it's fine - "COME ON KIDS, HE SAID IT'S FINE!"
Kyle: (still laughing) Oh, no ....
Ian: Orbot ... Cubot ... Tribot ... a few Egg pawns ...
Kyle: (laughing) Uh, who's the Kramer in this situation? (laughing) Knuckles?
Ian: Big the Cat.
Kyle: Okay.
Ian: Exact same mannerisms.
Kyle: OKAY. (laughs) Yeah, okay.
Ian: You know, mid conversation busts down the door, (Big voice) Froggy? Froggy, where are you?
Kyle: (truly shitting it now) Oh, no ... Oh, no ... Oh nohoho ... The episode where Shadow's parents all come over for the holidays ... All four of them ...
Ian: (cackles) (Shadow voice) Why do I have so many parents ...
(laughing)
(Black Doom voice) Now, we shall air our grievances on this festivus ... Shadow, finish the bowl.
Kyle: (losing his mind)
Ian: (Black Doom voice) Festivus ... is for the rest of us ...
Kyle: Oh, boy. Oh boy. Terrible. I love it. I love it ... Alright, I think that's enough.
Ian: It certainly is. Happy pride month to all of you celebrating. Be good to yourselves, be good to each other, and we will see you next time.

Give me: dadsolas and Jack Harper Must Die 👀
YESSSSSSS
wip title game
dadsolas
dadsolas is just kinda the placeholder title in gdocs for a little piece i'm drabbling out, it's sort of a soft quiet meditative piece with desolas hanging out on the porch swing at his and valis's new house in otoris shortly after they've moved in (so around 2172; by the time of exdiff in 2183+ they're pretty well settled into it) at sunset with his (at the time) youngest child, baby galenia, sleeping on his belly. i say "meditative" cause it's mostly des just lying quietly and observing the world around him and thinking about what brought him there and how things have changed from How They Used To Be before they moved and the chaos of shanxi and its immediate aftermath. i'm kinda using it as stress relief, work's stressful don't panic just sit here on the porch with big brother contemplating life and cooing over the baby it's all gonna be okay
quick snippet, for funsies:
The new house out on the prairie took some getting used to. It was bigger than their flat in Cipritine, big and sprawling and all one floor to hug the ground tight and keep itself safe from the wind's foul tempers. Desolas couldn't hear what everyone else was doing anymore, not unless they were all close together. He couldn't fall asleep to the drone of traffic outside, or wake up to the upstairs neighbors doing their morning PT. When he looked out the kitchen window, all he saw was a sea of plant life stretching from the edge of the garden to the line of trees a good two-minute sprint away. They'd had to finally break down and get an SUV to get around instead of walking everywhere. If they needed to get to base, it was a hefty drive away, and he'd told his superiors they were better off sending a hover for him. It was too spacious, too isolated, too quiet.
The sunset was nice, though, he supposed. And the porch swing. Val had been right about the porch swing.
The kids liked having a backyard, too, and he did like seeing them chase each other around and investigate all the plants and local animals that lived in or wandered across their new stomping grounds. The last owners had been an older couple who kept to their garden and didn't do much else, and Valis was happy with keeping it that way, and the local conservation laws were pretty stern anyway, so they had all kinds of things roaming around that he'd only gotten to see in pictures when he was Taniria's age. It was good for their lungs, Valis had reminded him, and their growing bodies. Turian kids needed to run and leap and play-hunt at their leisure, and it was better for them to do it in their natural environment.
He inhaled, long and slow, letting the warm summer dusk fill his lungs with evening blooms and nocturnal prey. No eezo-burn of skycars, no mingling gunsmoke-blood of strangers he couldn't see. Fresh air wasn't so bad, really. Maybe he'd missed that, in all the years since he'd been away from home Ifura remote bases.
Jack Harper Must Die
jhmd is the final major story installment of my big no-reapers au exponential differentiation! without spoiling too much, because the twist in the itlog climax is very sexy of me and i have to keep some secrets, two years have passed since the end of in the land of giants, and the galaxy is on the brink of war. the hegemony and the alliance are at each other's throats, the galaxy is reeling from [REDACTED], interspecies cooperation is at an all-time low, and in the middle of it all is cerberus, stirring shit up and causing problems on purpose. the illusive man, now the sole leader of the organization after the deaths of ben hislop in 2183 and eva core in 2184, has thrown off the mask of benevolence and slammed the pedal to the metal on the bus to crazytown. matteo shepard has spent the time chasing leads and solving problems around the galaxy as a full spectre in their own right (with the help of jack nought and a couple other friends they pick up as they go, of course).
and just as tensions are spiking ever-higher, with word of human colonies rallying to cerberus's banner and fighting back against their alliance governance (and whispers of the alliance turning to outside sources for help suppressing them, including the much-feared turian hastatim, only further fanning the flames), the leader of charon squad, cerberus's elite squad of human experiments that attacked eden prime in 2183 and [REDACTED] in 2184, is ready to talk - but only to shepard. but when shepard arrives to hear what viktoriya has to say, they learn she's disappeared instead, taking their best possible lead for finding jack harper once and for all with her.
so off they go to finish things, one way or another. their team is splintered and needs to be reunited: garrus is a stay-at-home dad to twins with ambassador rennis and reluctant to leave, saren is retired, nihlus is in a remote outpost in terminus caring for his injured mother, morinth is... somewhere, and so on and so forth. following a hunch from their last interaction with viktoriya, shepard seeks the arterius brothers out on palaven, only to find desolas has been deployed on a top-secret mission and promoted valis to brigadier general in his wake to prevent her from following. so they follow the trail: find desolas to find viktoriya to find harper. along the way, they make new friends (like rising star james vega) and recruit old (avitus wasn't going to let his best friends have all the fun without him), and puzzle out exactly what harper's grand master plan is - and learn hidden secrets about the history of the galaxy they never anticipated.
the whole thing is building towards the grand dramatic final confrontation between harper and desolas, finally resolving their conflict from shanxi one way or another. neither is the same man they were 29 years ago, but in different ways: desolas has calmed and settled with time and distance (and lots of therapy), where harper has grown bitter and hateful. desolas made the choice and active effort to move on and be the better man valis wanted him to be, while harper has let himself dwell on the past and obsess over it. the last of the secrets around what happened at shanxi come out whether they like it or not; it's a clash of titans, and when the dust clears, the face of the galaxy will be changed forever.

Fluffy Alphabet A-Z
Sano Manjiro aka Mikey
Tumblr media
Note: Thank you so much for 100+ followers. I wouldn't have been able to get his far without your support. I'm super overjoyed and glad that you guys take the time to read my writing. I love you all very much as promised I hope you enjoy the fluffy alphabet! 💗
A ctivities - What do they like to do with their s/o? How do they spend their free time with them?
> Mikey likes to go for rides on his CB205T and he likes to bring you along. He just loves the feeling of the wind passing and your presence behind him. Maybe sharing some snacks while you both watch the sunset or the starry night sky, talking about random things. He just generally likes being around you even if you're both just sitting in silence.
B eauty - What do they admire about their s/o? What do they think is beautiful about them?
> He admires your determination and strong will. Since Mikey is mentally weak, he admires those traits in other people. No matter what you'd always be there to scold him or comfort him. It reminds him of his older brother.
C omfort - How would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?
> Mikey instantly knows if you're feeling down, he just senses it. He'll bring you somewhere where they could both be alone maybe a park or he'll drive somewhere and sit you down. Mikey won't force you to tell him what's wrong but if you do he'll be listening intently. He's not the best at comforting people but makes sure to let you know that he's here for you.
D reams - How do they picture their future with their s/o?
> Now this is a hard topic to answer. Mikey has pictured a future with his s/o, living in peace after all the rush during his teenage years. However, he doesn't see it happening because he knows it's best if he keeps his s/o away from him in the future.
E qual - Are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?
> I'd say he's both but mostly on the passive side. He lets you take the lead since he doesn't know much about being in a relationship. He'll be given advice and teased by his close friends but he'll keep their words in mind.
F ight - Would they be easy to forgive their s/o? How are they fighting?
> Mikey is pretty stubborn and doesn't like losing. If it's a petty harmless arguement, if he's wrong then he'll muttering an apology to you and completely forget about it. It's difficult to get into a serious argument with him unless it's something concerning him or Toman. Say the things he needs to hear even if himself doesn't agree with you. Then he'll leave to give himself space and think about things. Be patient with him because eventually he'll come around.
G ratitude - How grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?
> Mikey is very grateful for you being by his side even though he thinks he doesn't deserve it. He appreciates every gesture you do for him from the big things and to the little things such as making him lunch or fixing his hair or just being by his side when he feels he's losing himself.
H onesty - Do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?
> Mikey doesn't hide things, if you ask him something he will directly answer you. He has no trouble talking about a past event since it already happened. Even though he doesn't want you getting involved with Toman, he still tells you about how they're doing or what they're up to. The only things he wouldn't share are his true feelings and his dark impulsivities since he doesn't want to scare you.
I nspiration - Did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? Like trying out new things or helped them overcome personal problems?
> Just by being by Mikey's side you are a positive influence on him. It will take a long time but little by little he tries to open up about his true feelings and tries to rely on you more. Everytime you sense he's distancing himself, you would have to drag him back and knock some sense into him.
J ealousy - Do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?
> Mikey is definitely the type to get jealous easily and his childish tendencies tend to come out. If he sees you getting too friendly with someone he'll keep staring until he's had enough and say "(Y/N) is mine, hmph!" With a cute pout on his face. Be sure to coddle him afterwards because he might give you the silent treatment.
K iss - Are they a good kisser? What was the first kiss like?
> Mikey has no experience whatsoever. He has no idea how kisses work. It'll be super rare to get a kiss from Mikey since he's not used to being affectionate. If you're lucky he'll peck you on your cheek or kiss your hands occasionally. Your first kiss with him wasn't planned. Both of you were alone and you were just admiring him as he talked and pressed a light kiss on his lips. He was instantly shocked by what you did as he traces over his lips with his fingers but inside he's feeling all warm. He never knew kisses from you would have this kind of affect on him.
L ove Confession - How would they confess to their s/o?
> It took long time for Mikey to realize that what he felt towards you was more than just friendship. He confessed this to Draken and he replied "huh, obviously you like them you idiot. Hurry up and go tell them." In which Mikey replies by telling Draken to do the same for Emma. It happened when he came to pick you up from school one day on his motorcycle and brought you to the riverside. "I finally understand what I feel, (Y/N). I like you... You don't have to give me an answer right away, I'll wait however long it takes..."
M arriage - Do they want to get married? How do they propose? What would the marriage be like?
> Another hard topic to answer. When Mikey fell for you he fell hard. As much as he wants to spend the rest of his life in peace with you, it won't happen. That is until he goes through "certain changes" and let's say he did. You'll be riding with him on his motorcycle on Christmas until he stops at a certain place. He'll start talking about his past and the times you've spent together. Then talking about how much he appreciates you and thanks you then pops the question. The wedding will be small and privately held with only people close to him and you are invited.
N icknames - What do they call their s/o?
> It is known that Mikey gives nicknames to those who are close to him. It depends on what your first name is. He'll most likely you use the first syllable of your name plus -chin, -cchi or -chy. Only when he's serious will he use your real name.
O n Cloud Nine - What are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?
> Honestly, it can be really hard to tell unless you really observe Mikey. You would notice he stares at you longer, or everytime your name pops up in a conversation he's interested. Draken is definitely the first the notice this change in Mikey and teases him for it, while Mikey denys it. The others will slowly start to notice this too. Especially, when he bought an extra taiyaki and gave it to you. Takemichy's jaw dropped at the scene.
P DA - Are they upfront about their relationship? Do they brag with their s/o in front of others? Or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?
> Mikey won't be announcing to everyone that he has an s/o. However, if someone asks he'll answer honestly. I wouldn't use the word "brag" but he will say nice about you to others. For Mikey, intimate gestures such as kissing are only between the two of you. If someone catches the both of you, Mikey wouldn't be pleased.
Q uirk - Some random ability they have that's beneficial in a relationship.
> You wouldn't have to worry about anyone trying to flirt with you or trying to hurt you not when Mikey's around. Mikey cares deeply about you and would give his life to protect you. You wouldn't have to worry about other people trying to flirt with Mikey either since you already have his heart, he'll simple brush them off. He's loyal.
R omance - How romantic are they? What would they do to make their s/o happy? Cliché or rather creative?
> As I have mentioned earlier, Mikey has no experience with relationships. You would have to teach him things. Still there will be moments that might seem simple to others but to you, you know it's a way Mikey shows his love for you. For example, draping his jacket over your shoulders or buying an extra snack so you could have some too. If he's not busy with Toman matters, he would want to spend his time with you.
S upport - Are they helping their s/o achieve their goals? Do they believe in them?
> Mikey would genuinely support your dreams and passions, telling you to never give up on them. He believes in you with his whole heart, and he knows you would be able to make your goals come true.
T hrill - Do they need to try out new things to spice out your relationship? Or do they prefer a certain routine?
> He would like to try things he never experienced before with you, like taking pictures at the photo booth or going shopping for matching keychains. That being said, what Mikey likes the most is the constant reassurance that you're here for him. Routines like going riding on his motorcycle or just talking with you, it what he like most. He's scared that one day you'd leave him so these mundane routines assures him.
U nderstanding - How good do they know their partner? Are they empathetic?
> You would think Mikey is the forgetful type but he actually pays attention to things. He'll notice you eyeing a certain item in a store or if you're lying to him. He genuinely cares about you and would like to know everything about you, even the shameful parts. Mikey has a hard time with emotions, he may not fully understand your troubles but he'll assure you that he'll be there for you.
V alue - How important is the relationship to them? What is it’s worth in comparison to other things in their life?
> For Mikey to actually want to establish a relationship with someone. It means he sees you as an important person in his life. However, certain things would have to come before you such as his family and Toman. It is something you would have to understand when dating Mikey.
W ild Card - A random Fluff Headcanon.
> Whenever he looks like he's spacing off during Toman meetings while he is paying attention to what's happening his mind can't help but wander towards you. About what you're currently doing or if you're at home safely. Before he starts the engine of his bike, or has nothing to do he fiddles with the keychain on his keys. It's the matching keychain you both have.
X OXO - Are they very affectionate? Do they love to kiss and cuddle?
> Mikey is not known to be the most showy when it comes to showing his affections. It's the little things he does for only you, that shows how much he cares about you. Mikey secretly likes the affection you give him even if he denies it. It surprises him everytime you hug him or kiss him but he never stops you or tells you to stop. Just don't do it in front of Toman. Even if he doesn't want to, cuddle him as the big spoon and it'll make him really happy. Since he's so used to keeping a strong facade, cuddling with you gives him the impression that with you maybe he doesn't have to do that.
Y earning - How will they cope when they're missing their partner?
> Mikey will still act as the strong charismatic leader of Toman, where nothing fazes him. He won't outwardly show that he misses you but you can tell by the way he fiddles with his matching keychain or stares off into the distance that he misses you. He might even unconsciously blurt a quiet "I miss (Y/N)...."
Z eal - Are they willing to go to great lenghts for the relationship? If so, what kind of?
> Mikey is willing to give his life away to protect you. Just you being with him is dangerous enough who knows who might be out to get him and easiest way they can do that is by getting you. If your safely is at risk even he likes you he would have to break up with you, keep you away from the danger. Because he utmostly cares about your well being and if anything happens to you, it will destroy him.

You were successfully avoiding him, not wanting to act like an idiot in front of the guy until Billy accepts to be your date for a fancy gala you're forced to attend. The night was going well, even better when he sneaked you out to go to the beach. But a gang of criminals breaks into the party, kidnapping the heirs to the wealthiest families, which includes you. So, for your safety, your parents want you to stay with Billy, living in his apartment until the criminals are caught. And that could take weeks, maybe even months.

California Never Felt Like Home
Even though he's not going anywhere any time soon, you hook one leg around his waist, just to pull him a little closer. “You're my prisoner now.” You mutter, sleep still clouding your voice.
“I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.” He answers, placing kisses all over your face.
“The good part is that we'll have all the afternoon to ourselves.” You giggle, moving to lay on your back with Billy hovering over you.
“I'll take you to see the sunset on that beach you like. Completely desert.” He says in a low voice. “If we survive your parents.”
“We already did.” Kissing him, you move to lie on top of him. “It'll be at this super expensive, fancy restaurant, so it means they won't yell at me or put on a show.”
“Sometimes I think you should consider what you're giving up.” He gets sad suddenly, sighing. You know what he's thinking about, and it will take time for Billy to see and understand this is what you really want.
“I'm giving up a huge house I never felt like it was mine. Lots of money that never brought me happiness.” In between the words, you place kisses all over his face. “But what I'm getting...? God, it's amazing.” Sitting up, you straddle his hips. “I got real friends now, and a home. And an awesome boyfriend who doesn't compare to the assholes on my parents' list.”
“I'm so happy I'm around to see the good daughter rebelling.” He sits up too, strong arms encircling your waist. “You look so good, little rebel.”
“You're just saying that because I'm wearing your shirt.” Wrapping your arms around his neck, you raise an eyebrow. Yesterday, you decided to pick one of his shirts to put on instead of your regular pajamas.
“Babe, you look good on everything. But I gotta admit seeing you wearing my clothes is very hot.”
Smiling, you can't help but blush. “We still have a few hours, so I think we can maybe make out for a while?” Biting your lip at his smirk, you giggle.
“Starting the day off with good ideas already.” He mutters, holding you up and throwing you back on the mattress. “This is the first day of the rest of your lives, you know that, right? Because I'm never letting you go. Unless you get tired of me.”
“I don't think I'll ever get tired of you, so yes...” Caressing his cheek, you take a deep breath, the sunlight illuminating his face. “The very first day of the rest of our lives.”
•••
The morning bliss had to be interrupted. But, as you sit across from your mother at the restaurant, you don't feel scared, or nervous. You feel perfectly fine. You're not dressed for this place, you can see it in your mother's eyes, but you don't care. You like the clothes you're wearing, and your mother's disgusting stare makes you chuckle under your breath. Making yourself comfortable, you ignore the silence. Nobody is saying anything, and your father has been staring at Billy as if he could kill him with his stare.
“So... I believe you want an explanation.” You start, cupping your hands together above the table. “Billy and I are dating. And I'll be living with him.”
“Is it some kind of joke?” Your mother interrupts, leaning closer. “You can't possibly think I'll believe you'll do that.” You're about to say something when she raises a hand, and you shut your mouth. “I get it, (Y/N). Billy is good looking, he has this appeal, he's different from the guys you're used to, rougher around the edges, I get all that. But this? This is insane.”
It's only a matter of time for the insults to begin, you're aware of that. “That's not all, mother.” You add, not even considering giving her a proper answer. “I'm not going to course Law anymore. I'll look for something I actually like. And go to the public University.”
“What the–”
“I have a good job now, at a store of diving equipment and I love it.” Cutting your father short, you raise your voice just a little. “That's my life now. I'm not going back to the house, but I want you both to know that I'll visit, of course, and you can visit me whenever you want and–”
“I'm not going to let you throw your entire life on the trash because of the freaking pool guy.” Your father's voice storms out, making a few people look your way. He does seem a little embarrassed, but definitely angry. “This man–” He points at Billy, and you hold his hand under the table. “–he can give you nothing. Nothing. What do you have in life, Hargrove? I shitty job, a tiny apartment. Do you think you can provide to someone like my daughter?” There it is. The insults. And, knowing exactly what Neil told Billy, you won't let your father treat him this way.
“You wanna know what Billy gave me, father?” Smiling, you begin. “He gave me a life. I never felt truly happy, never. Not in our mansion, or those fancy galas, or wearing fashionable clothes. Never. But with the pool guy, as you call him, in his tiny apartment with his lowlife friends? I finally felt something. I finally felt life was worth living.”
“Alright.” He slams his fist on the table, glancing at your mother, a mean smile on his face. “If you insist on doing this, I'll disown you.” He giggles, a hand half covering his mouth. “You won't see any cents from me anymore. Is that what you want?”
He looks like he got everything figured out. Exchanging a stare with Billy, you can tell he's worried. Does he think you'll fall for this? Squeezing his hand a little and smiling, you try to reassure him. He must feel awful, seated here, and listening to all this shit. “I–”
The waiter comes and you're cut short, waiting for your parents to order whatever they want to eat. “Oh, finally. We'll want Muffin Pan Shrimp Ragoon. Thought I'll give my kid one last decent lunch at a decent restaurant. What do you think?”
Seriously? “I can't eat that.” You think it's so obvious, but by the look on your father's face, he doesn't get it.
“What? Do you want to order something more expensive as a goodbye to your good life?”
“She's allergic to shrimp,” Billy speaks for the first time, his voice strong and deep. Both your parents look a little surprised, but soon enough recognition comes to their faces.
They completely forgot, but it doesn't bother you. You're happy Billy actually remembered it. You only mentioned it once, at the gala. “It's alright, though. We'll have lunch by the beach.” You tell them, smiling at Billy.
“Let me guess...” He dismisses the waiter with a gesture of his hand. “Sandwiches and soda?”
“Actually, yes.” Exclaiming, you stand up, and Billy does the same. It's over. You told them what's gonna happen now, and they have to make peace with that. And if your father wants to change his will and cut you out of it, so be it. “I made them myself and they're delicious.”
“For goodness sake.” Your mother mutters, running a hand through her hair. “Honey, please think this through, alright? Your house will be opened whenever you want to come back.”
“Thanks, mom. I will visit, I promise.” That said, you smile at them before turning away, hand in hand with Billy, walking away from the table.
“You better wipe off your bank account, (Y/N), because you'll never get a penny from me again!” Your father yells, and you simply wave at him, not even bothering to look back.
When you're outside, you feel light-headed, relieved. “This wasn't as bad as it could be.” You breathe out, walking to where Billy parked his car, a block away.
“Did he mean it? About disowning you?” He sounds serious, despite the smile that's on your face.
Turning around without letting go of his hand, you start walking backward. “I don't give a damn.” Speaking slowly, you wink at him, stopping suddenly and letting him come closer by himself before grabbing the collar of his shirt and tiptoeing to kiss him, sweet and slow.
“What the– (Y/N)?” Someone calls and since you do know who it is, you keep kissing Billy for a while longer. “Holy shit.”
It makes you giggle when he pulls your closer, deepening the kiss. But eventually, you have to breathe, so you break apart, a smile on your lips.
“Care to explain why the hell you're making out with the pool guy? In public?” Daniel says as you turn to face him. He has a girl with him, but you don't know who she is. He seems better, given the time he spent held hostage. “Have you lost your mind, girl?”
Sighing, you roll your eyes at him. You have a lunch date on the beach, and you don't wanna waste any more time with meaningless people. “Yeah. I'm dating the pool guy.” You tell him, shrugging your shoulders. “Actually, I'm in love with the pool guy. And now I work at a scuba diving store, so you can come up with some kind of name for me too, but you wanna know what? I don't give a damn.” Pulling Billy harder, you start walking again. “I'd love to say that we'll be seeing each other soon, but we won't. So... Goodbye, Daniel.” Turning on your heels, you leave the couple behind.
The drive to the beach is short, and instead of sitting on the sand, you chose to seat on the hood of his car. Which he now calls Lily, and you peacefully eat the sandwiches and drink the soda. You wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world. The ocean, the sunlight, the fresh wind messing with your hair. The simple food, the hood of his car... And him. Billy is certainly the best part. Having him here is indescribable, and knowing you'll go back home with him is even better.
“So... Will you help me chose something to major in?” You ask as he helps you climb off of the hood, taking your hand and starting to walk down the beach.
“Actually, I have some fresh news coming straight from Jason.” He says, a bright smile on his lips.
Furrowing your eyebrows, you stop to look at him. “What news...?”
“Mr. and Mrs. Heeler, from the store.” Billy starts, putting a strand of hair behind your ear. “They want to retire and they're thinking about passing the store over to you and Jason since they don't have any relatives. If you both agree on being associates.”
“Oh my God!” You exclaim, tiptoeing to crash your lips on his. “This is amazing.”
“Please act surprised when Jason tells you.” In a sudden motion, Billy reaches for your thighs, pulling you up and wrapping your legs around his waist. Using his shoulder for balance, you giggle. “He didn't want me to tell you but I couldn't resist.”
“This is just awesome. This is...” Taking a deep breath, you take a look at the ocean. The sound of the waves crashing is low and calming, and the way the sunlight reflects on the water shines like liquid silver. Then, you look at Billy again, his smile warming up your heart. “I love you.” You haven't said it yet, but it feels like the right time. And this is how you feel. You've never been in love before, but you know how this is how it feels. Like someone owns your whole heart. “I'm not sure if you feel the same but I just need you to know that–”
“I'm completely in love with you.” Billy cuts you off, bouncing you up a little and making the way back to his car. “I have been for a while and that scared the hell out of me.” When you reach Lily, he puts you down on the hood, remaining in between your legs. “But now... I'm sure of it. I want a life with you. A future.”
Blushing, you smile, your forehead touching Billy's. “So that thing you said about me getting to pick the kid's names...” You tease, placing a kiss on the corner of his lips.
“I mean it, if...” Pulling away from a little, he locks eyes with you. “If you don't pick something silly like the name you insisted on giving my car.”
“It's not silly!” Playfully, you try to push him away, giggling when he grabs your sides, tickling you. “Alright! Alright!” After a while you manage to stop him, his hands going back to your hips. “We'll pick names we both like. How does it sound?”
“It sounds like we're talking about kids even before getting married.”
“What?” Furrowing your eyebrows, you try to process what the hell he just said. “Sorry, I thought you heard you talking about...”
“I never felt like the type for marriage but, God, I want to marry you,” Billy exclaims, connecting his lips to yours.
You have a lot to say, a lot of things to ask, but you surrender to the kiss instead. This is all the answers you need. His lips on yours, on this paradise on Earth.
California never felt like home because home isn't a place, but a person. Billy is your home. Wherever you are, if he's with you, it's the right place. Nothing else needs to be said. The life you had before vanished like smoke in the air, and this is even better than everything you could ever dream of. Not all the money in the world can buy this moment, and you don't regret a thing. Love is far more important, and now that you found it, nothing will make you let it go.

Your writing gives me so much life. (Especially the chronic pain one! I personally struggle with CMP) They're so great I'm love- ah, when you have the time, how would the dads react to dadsona being a mortician/undertaker? Thank you!
I’m glad you like my little stories so much! That means a lot to me. I myself suffer from Fibromyalgia, so the chronic pain one was dear to my heart.
The prompt fill doesn’t contain any disturbing scenes, but, naturally, there is talk about dead people. The Robert one mentions an instrument I would strongly advise you not to google unless you’re not bothered by stuff like that. So, now that that’s out of the way, please enjoy!
🥃 Telling Robert about yourwork was pretty easy. Thing is, he didn’t believe you. The second time, he didn’tbelieve you either. The third, he congratulated you on your dedication to yourstory and toasted (with non-alcoholic beer) to your funeral home, in a tone ofvoice that made clear he didn’t believe you one bit. So, you decided to showhim. “What, did you pay the workers to act like you’re a co-worker?” You shootRobert an unimpressed look and park in front of the funeral home. “Do youreally think I’d pay that much money for something like that?” He raises hiseyebrow at you. Okay, yes, you probably would. You stick out your tongue andlead him inside. “Now, don’t let anyone know I’m doing this, but I don’t thinkanything else would convince you. You can watch me embalm a body.” For thefirst time since you told him about your job, Robert looks unsure. But he nodsand obediently puts on the gloves and other protective gear you hand him over, and follows you into the room. At the first sight of the dead body, he freezes.“Are there hidden cameras?” You snort and take out your tools. The moment you take out the needle injector and get ready to use it, Robert says“Nope” and leaves the room. You put aside your tools and follow him, a bitworried he would get sick or worse. He’s in the corridor, leaning against thewall and looking a bit green, but he seems to be fine otherwise. He looks up asyou approach and groans. “Okay, I believe you. Jesus Christ, kid, what thefuck.” You take off your gloves and pat his shoulder.
🍸 You stand back as you watch Joseph lead thefinal prayer that would bring the wake to an end. At first, you were surprisedto see him, but now you’re just giddy to approach him afterwards and see hisreaction. So far, all conversation between him and your funeral home had gonethrough one of your staff – he doesn’t know what you do for a living and peoplealways react differently, so you are curious to see. Once the family members ofthe deceased all had left, you push off the wall and walk up towards thecasket, where Joseph is packing up his things. You clear your throat and takesmall delight in his startled jump. He turns. “Crackers, Y/N! Don’t scare melike that. What are you doing here?” You grin and spread your arms. “What, canI not be in my own funeral home?” Joseph does a visible double take. His facegoes through a number of emotions – confusion, wonder, realisation – before settlingon surprise. “I didn’t know you were a funeral director.”“It never came up. I tend to avoid talking about it, most people freak out. Imean, sure, I admit it’s kind of creepy to prepare and deal with corpses on adaily basis, but not that much,” you say with a shrug. Joseph nods and adjusts histab collar. He looks very dashing all in black. “I don’t think it’s weird atall,” he assures you. “I think it is great people are willing to perform thoseservices. Speaking of—“ He wraps an arm around your waist and gestures towardsyour office. There are some things I want to go through again regarding thefuneral.”
☕ “You know,” Mat says after handing you yourdrink. You’re in the Coffee Spoon; Pablo is manning the till and it is slow, soMat joins you at your table and sits down. “You never told me what you do for aliving.” You hum against your cup and set it down after inhaling the sweet, sweet scent of caffeine. Having a boyfriend who owned a coffee shop is thegreatest thing in the world, next to Long Haul Paranormal Ice Road GhostTruckers. It means free drinks and more banana bread than a single personshould have. “Please don’t freak out,” you say. Immediately, Mat looks worried. You reach across the table and put a hand on his. “It’s nothing bad or illegal. Most people just freak out when I tell them.” You can practically see the cogsand wheels start turning in his head. He always furrows his eyebrows and frownswhen he’s thinking hard, it’s cute. “Are you a plumber?” You snort into yourcoffee and shake your head. “No.” He hums. “Crime scene cleaner?” Again, youshake your head. Mat looks at you, probably trying to picture you in a varietyof weird professions. You decide to take pity on him. “I’m a mortician. I own afuneral home the next town over.” Mat’s eyes widen and his lips form an ‘oh’.For a few moments, he doesn’t say anything. When he does, it’s clear he’ssearching for words. “That’s…” You tap his knuckles and chuckle. “You can saycreepy.” He blushes at being caught out. He turns over his hand so he can takeyours in his and lace your fingers. “It’s pretty creepy, baby.”
🌹 You don’t know why you never told Damien aboutyour job. After your visit to the graveyard where he told you of his views ondeath, you should have stopped worrying about his reaction once he found out,but old habits die hard and so, it’s by accident that he finds out. You weresitting together in his garden, enjoying the sunset, when your phone rang. Someonedied and their body needed to be picked up and taken to the funeral home. Afteryou hang up, you turn to him and try to think of an excuse that doesn’t involvethe phrase ‘dead person’, but it’s late and the words flow off your tongue. “Dames,I haven’t told you about my line of work yet and there’s a reason. Most peopleget freaked out and I was afraid you’d also react like that. But I just got acall and I have to go. I’m a mortician and own a funeral home. Someone died andI need to pick up the body.” Damien is silent, looking at you with the samecalm expression that he has most of the time. It helps you calm down. He’sstill leaned against you, he doesn’t seem grossed out at all. No, there’s aglimmer in his eyes… “Can I come with you?” Your mouth falls open. That’s areaction you didn’t expect, at all. “I won’t get in the way or touch anything Ishouldn’t touch, but I find it fascinating and would like to be witness to yourwork. I wish you had told me sooner about your profession, darling, but I dounderstand.” You stutter out a “Sure, come along” and get on your feet. Hekeeps on surprising you, even after all this time.
🎣 The topic of your profession comes up after thefirst time you visited Brian at work and got introduced to his co-workers. You’rein his kitchen, cooking his latest catch, when he speaks up. “In case youcouldn’t tell, the people at work really like you.”“Normally, I hate meeting new people, but with them it kind of felt like Ialready knew them. Probably because you told me so much about them beforehand.”Brian chuckles. “I also told them a lot about you.” You playfully grumble aboutbragging boyfriends who like to show off with their partners. After a pause, you say “Though I also tell my staff a lot about you, so I guess we’re even”and laugh. Brian grins. “So when I visit you at work, they’ll greet me like anold acquaintance?” You fall silent for a moment and turn down the stove beforeturning to face him. “Yeah, about that…” Your tone makes him frown. He reachesout to wrap an arm around you and searches your face for a reason why your moodchanged so quickly. “You might not want to come visit my work once you hearwhat I do. I’m a funeral director.” Brian’s eyes go wide and he pales visibly. He swallows hard and rubs the back of his head with his free hand, laughingnervously. “Oh. So you… I… that’s kind of creepy, isn’t it?” You shrug; itstopped being weird decades ago. “I still want to see your workplace. Just… nodead bodies anywhere near me, okay?” You let out a breath you hadn’t evenrealised you were holding and lean up to kiss his chin. “I promise. No deadpeople.”
👟 ‘Hey bro, I have to postpone our workout sessionlater today. Just got a call from work. I’ll drop by yours as soon as I’m done.’Craig’s reply comes after a few minutes, more hearts – he stopped writing outemoji some time ago and started actually using them right – than words butreassurances that he didn’t mind none the less. At half past seven you walkover to his house. You don’t get to knock – he’s opening the door before youeven raised your hand and pulls you close against his chest. You smile and wrapyour arms and legs around him as he lifts you and carries you over to thecouch. “Bro, your text got me thinking.” You hum and gesture for him tocontinue while getting comfortable, nuzzling into your very buff and still verynice-to-cuddle boyfriend. “I have no idea what you do for a living.”“You went to college with me, Craig. You were there when I graduated.” Hegently elbows your side. “That doesn’t mean you actually ended up working inthat field! Or maybe you switched professions somewhere down the line. There’sno way I’m just going to presume, bro. So, did it work out?” You kiss his cheekand nod. “I actually own my own funeral home now.” Craig grins down at you. “That’sgreat, bro. I’m happy you got to do something with your degree.”“Unlike you, Mister ‘let’s study whatever sounds the easiest’?” Craig purposelybrushes his finger over that very sensitive spot that never fails to make yousquirm. “Shut up.” You narrow your eyes at him in a challenging glare. “Makeme.”
📖  “So, earlier today Ernest told me somethinginteresting. He claims to have seen you drive a hearse. I’m not sure whether hewas lying or telling the truth, you never know with him, but I thought I’dbreach the topic with you anyway, in case he takes his joke any further. If it’sa joke.” Hugo looks at you over his glasses and puts aside his book. You stealanother piece of cheese off his plate and eat it with a cracker. “Not a joke. I’man undertaker, own my own funeral home. Does that freak you out? I canunderstand if it does. Not everyone’s comfortable knowing someone handles deadbodies.” Hugo pushes up his glasses, giving your question serious thought. “Itdoesn’t freak me out as much as I wonder why anyone would want to do that for aliving. But it’s your choice, so I respect that. I know I would never, everwant to do something like that, but then, you probably feel the same aboutbeing a teacher.” You offer him cheese from your plate in silent appreciationfor what he said. You two settle back against each other, your back to hischest, and he picks up his book again. Comfortable silence descends on you likea soft cotton blanket. “There’s something else you should know,” you say and Hugoraises an eyebrow. “I only had to drive around with the hearse once, today, soI know exactly when he saw me. You might want to ask him what he was doing outof school at ten in the morning.” Hugo curses and sits up. “That little—“
