While at Dunedin Fine Art Center to hear Ry McCullough’s talk, I was reminded of seeing this work at the USF Contemporary Art Museum last year as part of Skyway 20/21: A Contemporary Collaboration. The discussion was great and touched on a lot of interesting topics, especially around his use of collage.

From the gallery’s wall plaque about Themes for a Left-Handed Pitcher–

Inspired by the perfect game Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitcher Sandy Koufax threw against the Chicago Cubs in 1965, Themes for a Left Handed Pitcher engages compositional fielding of the domestic pitcher and black and white balls in a callback and comparative dialogue between sculptural objects and works on paper. Inviting playful and participatory discovery, the project includes an amplified palindromic sound score and a zine, which are both available to download. Interspersed with abstracted baseball references, the project evokes a change-up between the fabricated and found forms, the known and the unknown.

In addition to his independent practice, he is part of the collaborative project, small_bars, with artist Nick Satinover.

Within their collaborative practice they explore the structural authority of their band name moniker, small_bars. This ambiguous name serves as an all-encompassing banner which simultaneously referencing pixels on a screen, lines of type of a letter press, halftone processes, and the physical clubs and venues their former bands played. As small_bars, McCullough and Satinover are able to generate a collection of collateral materials such as audio recordings, videos, printed ephemera, performative events, and structural arrangements, all of which support and expand the notion of what the moniker suggests. This collaborative effort seeks to use the form of a band-like entity to create a space where the acts of publishing, printing and performance co-exist.

8 ways to celebrate Native American Heritage Month and ART’N Month in Tampa Bay this November

November is Native American Heritage Month and ART’n Month. Here are eight ways to celebrate in Tampa Bay.

1. Watch The Dali’s “Coffee with a Curator: The Cultural Legacy of Native American Artists” on YouTube.

The Dali started November by inviting James Museum curators Emily Kapes and Ernest Gendron to discuss Native American art in the James Museum collection as part of their “Coffee with a Curator” series. In the talk, they share work from contemporary Native American artists Tammy Garcia, Allan Houser, Preston Singletary, and Victoria Standing Bear Conroy, all of whom are represented in the James Museum’s permanent collection.

2. Go see Tammy Garcia, Allan Houser, Preston Singletary, and Victoria Standing Bear Conroy’s work at The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in St. Pete.

I’d be surprised if you didn’t want to see the art in person after hearing about it in the talk (see #1).

While you’re there, don’t miss “From Far East to West: The Chinese American Frontier” which I recently reviewed for Creative Loafing.

3. Experience “Native America: In Translation” via USF CAM.

Wendy Red Star assembled a stellar collection of work from Native American lens-based artists for NYC-based photography magazine Aperture, published in Fall 2020.

Two years later, the collection started traveling the U.S. as “Native America: In Translation.”

Through the end of November, Tampa Bay residents can experience “Native America: In Translation” at the University of South Florida’s Contemporary Art Museum for free (although you will have to drop a couple bucks for parking on ParkMobile).

USF CAM host three special events in conjunction with the exhibition — an indigenous perspectives forum at Barness Hall on Sat. Nov. 4 at 11 a.m., a free film screening of Night Raiders on the lawn Thurs. Nov. 9 and 6:30 p.m., and student led exhibition tours on Thurs. Nov. 30 at 6 and 7 p.m.

4. Attend Creative Pinellas’ Arts Annual Event.

Creative Pinellas’ Arts Annual is ART’n month’s flagship event. This month-long art party + art festival + art exhibition, held at Creative Pinellas in Largo, is the best way to get to know Pinellas County’s arts scene. The party starts Nov. 9, 6-9 p.m.

5. Explore Pinellas County’s arts scene via Creative Pinellas’ ART’n Month scavenger hunt

The second-best way to get to know Pinellas County’s art scene is to participate in Creative Pinellas’ ART’n Month scavenger hunt. The hunt takes participants to art museums, galleries, and public art throughout Pinellas County. All you need do to participate is download the Scavify Scavenger Hunt app on your cell phone, sign up, and start ticking off tasks. I’m documenting the hunt for Creative Pinellas this month, so reach out via social media if you’re participating.

6. Stay in and stream PBS’s Native American & Alaska Native Heritage Month programming. In addition to several documentaries, PBS’s Native American and Alaska Native Month programming leads you into Native American kitchens in “Alter-NATIVE Kitchen” and takes you on a journey of self-discovery with Bezhig Little Bird in the 6-episode series “Little Bird.”

7. Read this month’s issue of Arts Coast Magazine. If you haven’t read Creative Pinellas’ Arts Coast Magazine, now’s a great time to start. It only exists online, but it’s free to read, and it’s organized into categories reflecting the great variety of arts we have in Pinellas County. I wrote stories for the Arts & Education, Literary Arts, and Visual Arts & Film categories this month. But my content is only a small fraction of what’s available to read when you click on the link below.

Top Value Picks for your 2022 Bracket

Sunday night we broke down the favorites to win the 2022 NCAA Tournament and no surprise, top ranked Gonzaga is the most likely team to win at a whopping 26%, the highest percentage since… 2021 Gonzaga was also a 26% chance. The next highest team, Arizona (10%), is also the largest marginal difference between the 1 and 2 we’ve seen. This all feels like deja vu to us, but the Zags are certainly hoping it turns out a little different than last year.

Understanding the favorites and their paths to victory is only the first step in filling out a winning bracket. Picking the best bracket for your pool means consciously playing against the other players in your pool - you don’t need a perfect bracket. Playing to beat 15 people is very different than 150.

Finding teams that are undervalued - teams that have a real chance of advancing to later rounds but are being overlooked by the average player - is key as pool size increases. The more entries, the more you need to differentiate. At BracketVoodoo we call this a team’s round-by-round odds vs public pick percentage (RbRvPPP). Let’s say you pick a champion that has a 5% chance of winning. However, only 1 in 50 brackets is picking them to win. That gives you a RbRvPPP of 2.5 (anything >1 is considered a “value” pick). In a pool of 50 players, that’s a pretty good pick! But make that same pick in a pool with just 10 people and 19 out of 20 times you are going to be in trouble.

That’s where our Optimization Engine comes in to generate gambits for different pool sizes. We look at data from picks all over the country as well as all of the historical play-by-play data to evaluate millions of bracket combinations and determine optimal brackets for a variety of pools. Here are four teams that our analysis highlighted as teams that could give you an edge in your bracket. These are for standard pool scoring of 1-2-4-8-16-32, unless otherwise specified.

Gonzaga - #1 seed / West Region - The Bulldogs are once again the heavy favorite at more than a 1-in-4 chance to cut down the nets. Not surprisingly, they are underpicked by the public compared to their win probability. Pool players are likely reluctant to hop on the bandwagon after getting burned by other recent “sure thing” picks like 2015 Kentucky, 2019 Duke, or last year’s version of the ‘Zags. But Gonzaga has regrouped and has a favorable path. We think Gonzaga is a very strong pick for pools with ~60 or fewer entries.

Houston - #5 seed / South - Houston looks to be underseeded from our analysis. At #6 in our Power Rankings, we’re having a hard time not picking the Cougers to make a deep run in almost every pool size and type. Injuries to key players, especially Sasser back in December, may be making them undervalued by the public, but our projections take this into account and still aren’t deterred. We see them with about a 1 in 20 chance of winning the championship, while only about 1 in 100 are picking them. In a pool of just 8-10 people it may still not be worth it, but aside from those very small pools they seem like a great value.

Purdue - #3 seed / East - For mid to large size pools, the Boilermakers could make an interesting gambit coming out of their region. More than twice as many people are picking Baylor or Kentucky, but our models indicate their chances of advancing are only about 50% better than Purdue’s, who sit at 14 in our most recent Power Rankings.

USF - #10 seed / East - For pools with upset bonuses or seed multipliers, the 10-seed Don’s could be a valuable pick for 2 or 3 wins. Even in a large pool with bonus scoring, you don’t typically want to try to pick the “right” 10+ seed to make a deep run, but a strategic Elite 8 finish could really help to differentiate your bracket in an upset pool, especially with a lot of entries. We aren’t as high on them as some, but worth taking a flyer on if you get extra points for the “10” next to their name.

Keep in mind, how far you should project these teams in your bracket is a function of your pool specifics, most notably your pool’s size and scoring system.

UCF vs. UConn: “Day After” Musings & Thoughts

Happy 500th UCF Football game!!!! Our Knights capped off a milestone game with a resounding win and Settled the ConFLiCT.

Defense brought it once again. Tatum Bethune had his fourth double digit tackle game of the season. Justin Hodges had an insane interception in the first quarter. Cam Goode got his first career interception. The Knights defense totaled 5 sacks and allowed just 17 points. Solid effort all around.

Mikey Keene looked very comfortable most of the game and made some great decisions, both with his arm and with his feet. Johnny Richardson and Brandon Johnson hit career highs in yards for rushing and receiving respectively. I would argue this was Johnny Richardson’s best game as a Knights so far. One rushing and one receiving TD, he was very solid on his blocks, always seemed to be in the right place. Also, Ryan O’Keefe is now 2-2 with two touchdowns in the season. Talk about dual threat.

I know there are people who look at the score and the stats and say “well, it was UConn”. Well, that is correct, and this is how your team is supposed to perform against a team like UConn. That is not to say it was a flawless performance: there were breakdowns in protection that allowed the Huskies to get two sacks, there were a few three and out drives where the team just did not look in sync. Overall though, this was a textbook thumping and the kind of game our boys needed. Not only did it right the ship after last week’s disappointing loss at SMU, but a game like this serves as a morale boost before Black Friday’s game against directionally challenged usf.

Friday’s game will be the last War On I4 played at the Bounce House for the foreseeable future. Could be the last game played between the two schools for a while if the chips (and the money) fall into place. Two programs heading in completely opposite directions. UCF, a program on the rise, with great facilities, a strong fanbase, moving to a “P5” conference, about to haul in the best recruiting class in school history. Then there is usf, a program in disarray, stuck in realignment limbo, with no place to call home and less people every day to call fans. The karma being served to the bools right now feels so right, as we get to watch a program who did everything in their power to keep UCF out of the limelight succumb into mediocrity and anonymity. You reap what you sow.

As of yesterday, there were less than 700 tickets available for Friday’s game. Make sure you got yours because you do not want to miss the final slaying of the bools in Orlando. I mean, there is not much I need to say: Senior night, Black Friday, at the Bounce House. Be loud, be proud. After all, One Team, One Heartbeat, that means all of us.
