VARIGO DAY
i did a sequel to the fairy au because i wanted worldbuilding
Hugo could still place exactly where that stupid blue streak flowed against the rest of his hair. He could still count the freckles that dusted the tip of his nose and the edges of his cheeks. He could just about remember how his lip would curl when he smiled. It was lopsided- the left side of his mouth always pushed up just a little bit more than the right.
He was a shadow, an echo of something he never deserved. He could still feel the rough calluses on his hands lightly scratch across his cheeks. His lips still tingled with the memory.
Or: The bridge connecting the human kingdom of Ingvarr and the fairy kingdom of Corona has been shattered. After being forced into hiding after the events of last year, everything familiar to Hugo was now gone.
And yet somehow, ghosts from his past still manage to sneak their way back into the fragments of a life he had cobbled together. Who knows how much longer he can hold on.

Do you like mermaids? (You should tell us fun mermaid things :3)
HEHE YEAH really like all the different ways u can draw a mer tail, and frills and gills etc. fun mermaid thought: if the girls in H2O have bras made of the same scales as their tales, then are the bras their boobs??? also, H2O: just add water is wayyy better than H20: whatever the other one is. My first mermaid fixation was The Little Mermaid 2, my next mermaid fixation was an anime called Mermaid Melody and it's got songs that slap despite the plot being very cringe now lol. Everything i love i make a mer AU of it. i drew designs for the BH6 characters, i drew fanart for a mer fic au of HTTYD, I wrote a merPeter au for IronDad, i rambled and drew for varigo (hehe >:3). I LOVE DANNY PHANTOM MER AU FIC CALLED 'TREADING WATER'. i got a YA novel from the bookstore and uh i thought it would be good bc the art is real pretty but then in the first or second chapter they described to me how mers have sex and i didn't want to know anything else. I really liked a book called In Other Lands, which i picked up because it had a mermaid on the front, and even though there were no mermaids IN the book (i felt personally attacked), there was gay love in a fantasy setting so that was nice

God okay im so sorry if I'm flooding your inbox (I have sent. A good amount of headcanons oops) BUT another varigo hc, this time it Is what you asked for, that being hurt/comfort
So. I personally hc that Varian has some pretty deeply buried issues with rage. In the show, a lot of his responses to different situations- after shock or panic -IS anger. But this is also, again, Varian, who KNOWS how dangerous his anger is and is incredibly guilty over the damage it's done. So as he gets older he just...refuses to feel it. Pushes it down and hides it, because suffocating it is So Much Less Dangerous than feeling it (in his opinion, at least).
Hugo, once they start dating, doesn't put up with that shit. He admits openly that he's not super good at the whole "talking about emotions" thing, but he Is good at listening, when he chooses to be. So he throws together a little nest, curls up with his boyfriend, and offers to just...listen to Varian Yell. About everything and anything that's pissing him off, and rubs his back through the entire rant. And it /works/, because Hugo even just being there keeps him from getting lost in all of it, and he sometimes even throws in some validation via commentary ("nono, you're absolutely right that was a Dickish thing they did, go off"). And, yknow, the massage is always nice. (And occasionally distracting because has Hugo always known how to do this??? Cause if so it was very rude of him to keep this skill to himself, but back to what varian was saying about the trainee guards-)
Anyway sorry didn't mean to write you a mini novel, hope ur having a decent vibe and/or are at least doing better!!
PLEASE NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR SPAMMING MY INBOX WITH HEADCANONS I love discussing them and reading them it makes me smile... its one of my favorite things to do!!
BUT YES YEAHHHA VERY TRUE...
AND after Varian calms down more, they still talk and distract for awhile to get him in a better mood jic so he's not tired or low energy! Hugo says a bunch of stupid jokes to make him laugh and they always do. He always knows what makes Varian laugh...
Or he can resort to the easy method of kissing Varian's neck and occasionally blowing a raspberry to surprise him. It makes him burst into giggles every time...
It helps Varian express anger more easily... its very good... if he's angry or upset, he just kinda silently grabs Hugo's hands and says something like. "I had a bad day..." and Hugo's instantly on it to help. Varian feels more confident telling him when he needs things like that because he knows he'll feel less stressed after telling him and he'll get to laugh afterwards...

Lingering Sweetness
Chapter 6 of the Varigo Coffee Shop AU! Sorry this is late, a lot of stuff has happened today, but I’m happy I at least had some time to write this! I say this every time but THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT!!!! Now, on with the chapter!
Word Count - 3918
-----------------------------------------
It didn’t take long for Eugene and Rapunzel to show up at the door, the rapping fists on the door interrupting the particularly heated make out session Hugo and Varian were only just starting to engage in. Hugo moved from where he was seated between Varian’s legs and made his way to the door, yawning as he unlocked the main door to the apartment. A purple blur passed him as soon as the door opened, instantly running and wrapping its arms around Varian, who had only just stumbled his way into the hallway.
“Varian, we were so worried about you all night!” Rapunzel cried, her fingers running through his hair and holding him as if he’d turn to dust if she let go of him. His arms proceeded to wrap around her to exchange the hug she’d initiated. “Oh, by the way, I’m Rapunzel and this is my fiance, Eugene. It’s a pleasure to meet you, uh…”
“Hugo.” he stated quickly, confusing Varian. Why did he sound so tense? Oh. From over his sister’s shoulder, he could see the staring battle his boyfriend and brother were currently very invested in. He kinda figured it would be tense - but not THAT tense..he decided he had to do something to break up their battle as fast as he could.
“Guys, we need to talk.” he finally declared, swallowing thickly. The two men finished up their silent battle as they were led by the smaller boy into the quaint living room. He took a seat on the couch, taking his boyfriend’s hand and pulling him down to sit by him as Eugene and Rapunzel took a seat on the other, much to Eugene’s distaste. His hands shook as he kneaded them in his lap silently, his gaze on the floor. How could he start this? He knew what he wanted to tell his brother and sister but...he didn’t know how to word it whatsoever.
“I’m uh...does anyone want a drink?” Hugo asked, standing up awkwardly as everyone nodded in agreement. He scurried to the kitchen after getting the orders - coffee for him and Fitzherbert, green tea for Rapunzel and of course, a vanilla latte for Varian. Rapunzel was lucky he even had tea in proximity of his apartment - sometimes he drank it before bed to help with stress. Nonetheless, he began with preparing the drinks.
Was it always going to be this tense between all of them? Eugene and his wife seemed like lovely people (well, as lovely as she could be after their first meeting has been Eugene yelling at his boyfriend), but they really didn’t hide their distaste with the situation. Maybe it was just him overthinking it all. After all, they were his boyfriend’s family and all he wanted was for them to like him. He bit his lip and sighed, finishing his work on the drinks and carrying them into the living room.
“Thank you!” Rapunzel, ever the literal bundle of sunshine, called out as she graciously took her tea from Hugo and had a sip. “This is perfect!” she declared, shuffling back into her seat as an awkward silence preceded her words. Yet again, Varian was left to try and figure out everything he desperately wanted to say or more specifically, how to word it. He felt his breathing and heart rate quicken as the anxiety started to build. What if they didn’t like Hugo? What if he wasn’t allowed to see the other boy again? What if-What if-
“I’m sorry.” Eugene’s voice echoed through the apartment, plain as day, as he looked over at his brother-in-law. “I was wrong to say no one can change - as me and you are prime examples of that. But you have to understand that I was so...scared of you being hurt since you didn’t show up to dinner, and I immediately assumed you were in danger. It didn’t help that your boyfriend just so happens to be a pickpocket, so it’s...kinda hard to let that slide.”
“Actually, redeemed pickpocket! I don’t do that anymore.” Hugo interjected, curling into himself as Eugene shot a glare in his direction. “Sorry.”
“Anyway, what I was saying before I was oh so rudely interrupted .” He cast another glare in Hugo’s direction, prompting Varian to chuckle. “I shouldn’t have lashed out at you. It wasn’t fair and...ridiculously hypocritical. So...I’m sorry.”
Varian rose to his feet, walking over to him and wrapping his arms around his brother in a tender embrace. He stepped back and locked eyes with Eugene. “I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have left you in the dark about the sudden change of plans or just left the car like that. I should’ve handled it more maturely, but in the heat of the moment, I panicked and just did the first thing that came to mind. So Eugene..I forgive you, and I’m sorry too.” He finished with a smile, bringing Eugene back into the embrace they had previously started. They stood like that for a moment - just content to be in each other’s company, before Rapunzel broke the silence.
“As cute as you two are, which is extremely by the way, your dad is worried sick so we should probably get you home.” she commented, standing and walking to Hugo. “Thank you for letting him stay here last night.” Hugo raised a hand to silence her, a smile on his face as he confirmed to her that it really wasn’t a problem and Varian was a pleasure to have in his company. He shot a wink in his boyfriend’s direction, relishing in the blush that formed on his cheeks and breaking out into laughter when the younger boy punched his arm.
As they headed towards the door, Varian turned and quickly wrapped his arms around his boyfriend’s waist. His head rested on his chest, just below his chin, and his boyfriend pulled him flush against his chest. His locks were twirled around Hugo’s nimble fingers before he pulled out of the hug, gazing up at the man who looked at him with nothing but love in his eyes. He really didn’t want to leave him again, just wanting to relive the night before with the boy he loved, but he guessed things didn’t work that way. “I’m gonna miss you.” he forced out.
“I’ll text you later, darling.” the blonde muttered, placing a tender kiss to his forehead after pushing his fringe out of his face. With one last embrace, Hugo headed downstairs with the others and leant in the doorway with a saddened smile as Varian walked away with Rapunzel. He was going to miss the boy so much. But wait. Upon closer examination, he only saw two heads. So where was...-a hand grasped his arm and pulled him aside in the doorway, brown eyes meeting his confused ones. Ah. So that’s where Eugene was. Interesting. The grip on his arm was akin to a clamp, making his arm go progressively more numb as it persisted. However, he had to make a good impression, he kept telling himself. “Can I help you, Fitzherbert?”
“Okay first off it’s Eugene. Second of all, I’m sure you’re smart enough to know what I’m about to tell you...but if you break his heart, I will get you arrested for your previous crimes without remorse.” Eugene frowned, leaning forward and placing his hands on Hugo’s shoulders. “I don’t think you’re a bad guy, but Varian’s been through a lot. I would say ‘ hurt him and I’ll break your kneecaps’ but, to be honest..if you broke his heart, Varian would probably have that department covered on his own. The kid’s freakishly strong. Anyway. He’s just...he’s my little brother and I never want to see him broken-hearted over some stupid boy. Capiche?”
“Okay, Fitzherbert. I’ve got it loud and clear.” Hugo replied, rolling his eyes in response to the brunette’s rambling. A sigh of relief passed through his lips as the brunette finally stepped away and gave him some air. It wasn’t as tense as he thought it would be, if he was being honest...he thought the man would be more stern with him...oh well. At least it was over now!
“Didn’t I just tell you to call me Eugene?” he commented, though the grin on his face told Hugo that Eugene didn’t really care. “Anyway, kid. Nice meeting you. Sorry we got off on the wrong foot.” He added before waving and walking away to the car, Hugo heading in the opposite direction to go back up to his apartment.
So! He’d just met the family! It went...better than he’d expected in all honesty. If Donella cared about his life other than school, she’d probably have given Varian a hard time. She was like a mother to him, if a mother was cold, uncaring and only kept you because you were smart and could make her more money. That was another thing. He’d have to make sure Donella and Varian never met. If Varian met that woman...boy howdy, that would be interesting. He pushed the thought away, unlocking the door to his apartment, ready to start his homework for today.
Meanwhile, the raven haired boy moved into the back of the car (Eugene had called it ‘Maximus’ as soon as he got it, Varian finding it kind of dumb.) while Rapunzel took her seat on the passenger's side. They shut the doors once they were both settled, Rapunzel immediately turning back to face him with a smile.
“So! Your boyfriend seems nice!” She began to say, leaning forwards in her chair as she spoke. “I mean, you sure know how to pick them! I saw all of the books he has are about engineering and all that, which is honestly very interesting. Also there’s an abnormal amount of green in there. Not that it’s a problem, but it’s just a random observation I made! You should invite him to dinner next week. Anyway, back to what I said, he seems really nice!”
“I..yeah. He is. He’s really sweet once you get to know him.” He added shyly, a small blush appearing on his cheeks. Hugo really was a sweet guy if he wanted to be - always checking on Varian after his classes and messaging him on a night to help him sleep better. Sure, he was confrontational with Nuru and LOVED to tease her, but he knew it was all in good fun. He loved the girl, really.
“Tell me a little bit about him, then! I want to know all about how you two lovebirds met.” She giggled excitedly and looked directly at him with an eagerness he’d grown to love. Sometimes she could be such a hopeless romantic - but she just wanted everyone to find their new dream, as she put it. He didn’t get that, but he ignored that in favour of telling her the story of his and Hugo’s first meeting.
“Well, I was walking back from my classes and there was a really bad snowstorm. At first I thought I could make it home before it got any worse, but after time I decided to duck into the first store I could find - a coffee shop. I took a seat at a booth by the window and Hugo came over asking to sit by me as every other table was full. I obliged and he bought me a drink to say thanks. We talked for hours about chemistry and engineering, until eventually he had to leave. But he wrote his number down on a napkin and when I got home, we texted all night! He even asked me out again for Thursday so, of course, I said yes.”
“On Thursday, we met up at the coffee shop again in the same booth and kept on talking and talking. Hell, Rapunzel, we almost kissed..and I think he just..he’s the loveliest guy in the world, well - to me he is..and I just desperately wish that you and Eugene like him too.” He finished, a soft smile on his face at the memories.
Rapunzel bit her lip and smiled widely. “Varian, I’m happy you’ve found your dream, although you might wanna hide those before Eugene gets in the car if you want your boyfriend to survive this week.” she added, gesturing to Varian’s neck. He hastily pulled up the hood of Hugo’s hoodie and bit his lip, nodding in agreement just as the brunette got into the car. He desperately averted eye contact, finding the touch screen in the car VERY interesting in his embarrassed state.
“Alright kiddo. Let's get you back home.” Eugene uttered under his breath, starting the car and driving down the road. Varian averted his gaze to Hugo’s apartment building, committing it to memory as they slowly drove away. He wouldn’t mind living there with his boyfriend, he pondered, watching the building gradually get smaller and smaller till he could no longer see it. The apartment was scarily small, but that didn’t bother him. It was homey, and reflected Hugo’s personality so well with how it was laid out, organised and even decorated, a unique spin on every room, despite it all being mostly green.
He continued to stare out of the window as they drove, lost in thought. He’d never felt this way about anyone in his life before. He remembered Eugene used to say that as soon as he laid eyes on Rapunzel he knew he’d ‘found his new dream’, whatever that meant. But Varian was sure he’d felt a spark when him and Hugo met. Something strong. Was that what Eugene had been talking about? That he just knew he’d end up marrying Rapunzel one day? Either way, Varian knew that, whatever it was, he wanted more from Hugo. So much more.
Twenty minutes later, the car had stopped and he opened the door. After shutting it, he trekked up the path to his house, jumping up the steps. He turned back, gazing at Rapunzel and Eugene, the pair giving him a reassuring thumbs up as he let out a deep breath and opened the door in front of him.
Immediately, he was met with the sight of his father, his arms folded and a disappointed look on his face. He seemed to be furious despite his mostly neutral expression as he looked down at his son. Varian bit the inside of his chin. Looked like he wasn’t getting off the hook this time.
“You’re grounded.” Quirin stated, point blanc. No sugar-coating, no ‘are-you-okay?’, none of that. Just straight up. Grounded. A frown crept his way onto his face as he stared up at his dad in silence.
“I-really, dad? You’re never even home to ground me!” He responded, rolling his eyes as he moved towards the staircase to head upstairs. The giant figure of his father blocked the way, stepping in front of it and grabbing his shoulders.
“You-Okay so, your mother left and I’m trying to support both of us, which we both knew would include me taking extra shifts! The one night I’m home this week, I get frantic calls from Rapunzel and Eugene telling me you weren’t around theirs for dinner - where I thought you were, and then hours later that you’d just-wandered off into the night! And you expect to not be punished for that?” He exclaimed, his stoic expression replaced with one of anger, gradually building up the more his son argued. “Who even is this boy anyway?”
“He’s just a friend alright? God, just-I’m sorry I wanted to spend time with friends instead of being here alone all night! I just wanted a damn break!”
“Are you sure it’s ‘just a friend’? And what the hell is that on your neck?!” Quirin pulled the boy closer and his eyes widened when he saw the purple bruises scattered all over his son’s neck and throat. “‘Just a friend’? Care to explain how in the hell you got these then?” he gripped his son’s wrist in a harsh hold.
“Let go of me, dad!” Varian stuttered out, tears threatening to roll down his cheeks.
“No, Varian Ruddiger! You explain this to me right n-”
“LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!” Varian screamed out as he shoved his dad aside into the wall and stormed up the stairs, slamming the door behind him and sitting at his desk. He groaned and rubbed his eyes to try and brush away the tears building in them. His dad was never around anyway so why the hell would he care what he was doing and who he was with? He was happy, goddamnit. And now he couldn’t go out and meet his boyfriend for god knows how long...he let out a frustrated groan and pulled out his phone, Ruddiger jumping to sit in his lap as he pressed on Hugo’s contact.
Varian : Heya. I’m officially grounded so...dates may have to wait
Hugo : =((
Hugo : Bold of you to assume that’s gonna stop me from seeing my handsome boyfriend <3
Varian : Im serious, Hugh. I don’t want you to get in trouble
Hugo: mmmmmm okay then sweetie pie.
Varian shut off his phone, placing it in a drawer in his desk and shutting it before resting his head on the desk. Oh well, at least now he had some time to start his chemistry homework. He reached into his bag and pulled out the various different sheets along with a textbook, likely weighing a tonne. He dropped it all onto the desk in front of him, opening it and skipping to the appropriate pages. With a deep sigh, he began to work.
Sitting in his room alone and trying to do his homework was a particularly stressful task when all he could think about was how the blonde’s arms had wrapped around him the night before. How nice it had felt to be in his arms, how bitter his lips had tasted as they’d kissed...he just wanted to see the boy again. He was addictive. Everything about him was. From his laugh to the way he’d make Varian flush with even the slightest of touches. He needed to see that boy again. Just as that thought appeared, the sound of rocks clinking against his window broke him out of his trance. He strode over and saw Hugo, a wide smile on his face and a mass of pebbles in his arms.
“Hey hairstripe!” he called out, beginning to climb up the side of the wall - using the lattice his dad had installed countless years ago. Hastily, Varian opened the window and allowed his boyfriend to enter his room. “I know you’re gonna yell at me, but I had to see you again-” Hugo started, Varian kissing him to shut him up.
“My dad will kill you if he finds out you’re in here. I’m not even kidding.” Varian whispered, loud enough for the other boy to hear. Hugo seemingly didn’t care, lifting his boyfriend into the air and pushing him against the wall. He trailed kisses along his neck, leaving light bites as he did. Varian’s hand rose to his mouth, him biting it harshly to prevent himself from moaning. God, Hugo knew how to kiss. “Hugo, I’m being serious-”
“Hi being serious, I’m Hugo.” he replied smugly, moving to place a kiss on his boyfriend’s lips as he cringed at the terrible joke. “Relax, Varian. He won’t know I’m here. And before you ask, Nuru let me know your address so I could surprise you. I just had to see you again, y’know?” he tilted his head cutely before placing his boyfriend on the floor and laying on his bed. “Nice place, by the way. Though, I’m seeing a distinctive lack of green..”
“Oh shut up, green can’t be everyone’s color.” Varian rolled his eyes in response before joining his boyfriend on the bed, resting his head on his chest and tracing circles on it with his finger. This was nice - it being just them. He closed his eyes, content in the moment before Hugo stirred beside him. “What?”
“You wanna talk about what happened with your dad, or is that a strictly ‘you-and-him’ kind of situation?” Hugo looked down at his boyfriend, an eyebrow quirked up with a concerned expression on his face. God, he loved this boy so much.
“Well, he grounded me, as you know. And he saw my neck, no thanks to you.” Varian began. “He kinda...figured out we weren’t just ‘besties for life going and spending a night at one another’s apartment for a game of smash ultimate’”
“Yikes. Sounds like he thought you were looking for a different kind of smash.” Hugo joked, Varian’s face contorting into a look of utter betrayal as he stared at the boy above him. Never mind. He took it all back. The dad joke was hard enough to deal with, but this? This was crossing a line.
“Oh, shut up.” He muttered, rolling his eyes and trying to suppress a laugh at Hugo’s betrayed expression. He could be so funny sometimes. Only sometimes though. The thought made him chuckle slightly.
Hugo retaliated by pulling Varian into his lap with a wicked smirk on his face, peaking Varian’s excitement. “How about you make me shut up, hairstripe?” He challenged as his fingers dug into Varian’s waist, only adding to the pure excitement he was feeling at the moment. Varian murmured ‘with pleasure’ before leaning down and locking lips with his boyfriend in a passionate and rough kiss.
One of Hugo’s hands moved to the back of his head, the other squeezing Varian’s waist to ground him while he was on cloud nine. The younger boy’s hands rested on his boyfriend’s chest as he took in the taste of blueberry in the blonde’s mouth, exploring it contently. His hands twisted the cloth he was gripping, before they both let the kiss slow down, fading into small pecks on the lips and little giggles.
After a while, Hugo propped himself up on his elbows and gazed into the other boy’s eyes. He shook his head, seemingly to clear it before clearing his throat with a smile on his face. “I’m gonna give you a choice. So, we can either stay here for tonight..or I can take you out to where I originally intended.” he said, sitting up and looking down at Varian. His raven locks fell into his face, Hugo promptly fixing it by tucking that hair behind his ear. “I don’t mind either way.”
Varian thought for a moment. A night out would get him into way more trouble. But only if he got caught. It was risky as hell too. What if they didn’t get back before Quirin went back to work? He glanced down at Hugo’s face again and smiled. It would be one hell of a risk, but he did wanna spend time with his boyfriend…screw it. What did he have left to lose?
“Alright. Let’s go.” he decided, sitting up and packing his bag with essentials. With a nod of confirmation, they began their journey to leave the house. Hugo climbed out of the window before he did, Varian joining him soon after. As he reached the bottom of the lattice, Hugo grabbed his waist to steady him as he stumbled forward. A smirk appeared on the blonde’s face, barely visible in the low lighting they were now exposed to. He took a second to place a kiss to the taller boy’s lips before they both headed off into the night, hand in hand.

In which Hugo Nearly Fights a Toddler
Hugo's main rival for Varian's love isn't a suitor. It's a child. A slightly bratty royal child.
I meant to repost this as like, fully available on tumblr, but im a moron and just reposted the link from last night. rip. I am also now taking Varigo fic requests! See my other oneshots here
-
Hugo didn’t hate all children, it’s just… he hated the one that he knew.
Varian insisted he was being ridiculous, but what did he know? He was her uncle, it was his job to like the little brat. And she certainly didn’t help, with her clinging and yelling and crying, and how Andrea stole the last crepe at breakfast the other day when he clearly called dibs!
The hatred was mutual, too. Anytime Hugo and Varian were together, Andrea would grab onto Varian and drag him away from Hugo. And everytime, without fail, she’d turn and stick her tongue out at him! He always stuck his out in return, of course, because what the hell else can he do? Fight a literal toddler for his boyfriend’s hand?
With Andrea’s 5th birthday came a slew of the festivities Corona was famous for. Dancing, singing, music, the whole shebang. Hugo would’ve been glad to spend it like all the rest: holed up the Library, only coming out to steal Varian from his royal duties and drag him back to their room and not leave until late the next morning, when he would smugly announce Varian wasn’t feeling well and wouldn’t be attending the day’s ceremonies. And he usually scheduled that day to be the final festival day, when the closing ball happens.
Unfortunately, since this was Andrea’s birthday, he was stuck fulfilling the whims of the brat princess, and all she wanted for her birthday was for her Best Uncle Varian to attend a ball for once and dance with her.
Which meant no sneaking away from the festivities, no stealing his boyfriend, no fooling around and weaseling their way out of royal duties.
The worst part was that Varian was willing to do it! It’d be one thing if they got to share in their hatred of nobility and all the stifling activities it entailed, but Varian was more than happy to agree for Andrea’s sake. He was weak to her puppy eyes.
“Seriously?” Hugo had complained to her. “We could make you like almost anything.”
“No!” Andrea had stomped her little mary-jane clad foot, the perfect image of a spoiled princess. “You always hog him!” She’d whined.
“He’s my boyfriend, that’s my job.”
“Well you’re fired!”
Varian had laughed himself to tears when Hugo told him that.
Here’s hoping any kids they had wouldn’t be as spoiled…
Hugo had mentioned that off-handedly once, and once they all got over the shock of Oh my God Hugo wants to marry Varian and have kids, Varian had been quick to argue otherwise.
“Babe, you will literally drop whatever you’re holding to hug me. Like, let it crash onto the floor,” He’d laughed. “There is no way you won’t spoil our kid silly. You’re just jealous of Andy.”
“I am NOT!”
And it’s true! He was definitely not jealous of a child. Not jealous of how Varian was willing to ditch Hugo for her, or how he let Andrea help him with their lab experiments even if she often ruined them, or how he’d gladly make toys for her but when Hugo asks for something it’s always “Hugo, we’re not building a death ray security system, that’s a terrible idea.” or “No, I’m not getting you a bow and arrow from the market, you’re just gonna try and hunt Eugene down.” Not that Varian doesn’t get him stuff, quite the opposite. It’s just not the stuff that he needs.
(He doesn’t actually need it, he just likes being dramatic for dramatic’s sake. That and it makes Varian laugh.)
Anyway. The point is Hugo is being forced to go to a birthday party ball and he hates it.
Well, that’s not entirely true. Varian looks breathtaking with his hair slicked back and teal work outfit swapped for a more formal beige suit. Hugo was pretty satisfied with his own attire too, choosing just a simple white dress shirt and black pants. He wasn’t the center of attention tonight, and he’d like to keep it that way. If he had to play nice with a bunch of stuffy nobles and diplomats he might actually explode.
Thankfully, he was allowed to play the part of Varian’s arm accessory, a part he adored and took very seriously. Could you blame him? Varian was a hell of a catch, with his enchanting baby blue eyes and adorable freckled face, and his hands were so soft and sleek despite his day job. He wasn’t the only one who noticed Varian’s good looks, clearly.
One noble, whose name Hugo didn’t care nor want to learn, had been eyeing Varian whenever he passed by, and he passed by often. The guy didn’t even try to hide his glances, looking Varian up and down hungrily. Every time he walked by, Hugo couldn’t help but squeeze his arm around Varian a little tighter, and Varian would simply hum and rest his head on Hugo’s shoulder for a moment.
“I gotta go find Andy,” He muttered, letting go of Hugo, but not without a chaste kiss on the cheek. With that, Varian slid into the crowd, awkwardly trying to avoid small talk with the other nobles in attendance as he went. Varian hates these events just as much as Hugo, he just does a better job at hiding it.
Speaking of shitty nobles, here comes that guy again. He’s wearing the red of Ingvarr, black hair slick with gel save for one stray hair on his forehead. His face is etched with a smirk, not unlike a cat about to snap the neck of its prey. He skulks up to Hugo with that smarmy look and Hugo represses the urge to sock him in the face.
The noble looks Hugo up and down like he’s debating whether or not to eat him. “Ah, I see your little bird has flown away for the evening?”
“He went to go find the princess,” Hugo bites out, his eyes turning to scan the ballroom for either Varian or Andrea.
“Sure he did.” Clearly, the man didn’t believe him. “I don’t believe I know who you are, though I doubt that’s a problem.” Oh bitch he did not just do that. “Lord Ricket. And you are Lord Varian’s servant, I presume? Obviously that rose of Corona wouldn’t choose to be near you otherwise.”
His laugh was high pitched, as if the laugh escaped him on accident. God, this guy was everything Hugo hated about court. Varian, a rose? Please, the guy may seem small and delicate but was a walking disaster, anyone who spent more than 5 minutes with him knew it This is exactly why he didn’t want to come-
His steaming anger was cut off by a small hand slipping into his, warm and soft.
“Hugo,” Andrea whined, the u sounding more like an oo sound. Hugo would die before he admitted it was cute. “Uncle Varian needs you.” She tugged on his arm, trying to get him to move with all her little baby strength. It didn’t work. She simply stood at an angle, hair falling to the floor.
Hugo blinked. He’d never seen Andrea act like this to anyone but her parents, grandparents, and of course Varian. Her face was scrunched up with the effort of trying to move someone a good five times her size.
Lord Ricket blinked in shock at the little intruder. Recognizing the princess, his dark grin turned into a neutral frown and slunk back into the crowd of bodies. Andrea let go of Hugo’s hand and fell onto the floor with a soft thunk. Her dress spread out around her like a blanket, undoubtedly getting dirty.
“I hate balls,” She grumbled.
That got his attention. “You do?” He honestly expected Andrea to love this. She thrived on being the center of attention, and this would be no exception. The first of the new generation, all of the older royals loved to crowd her and shower her in praises, and she seemed to eat it up.
“Yea!” She yelled, raising her arms over her head, but making no movement to get up from the floor. “Everyone’s super boring, it’s all ‘nice to meet you’ and ‘I like your dress’! I don’t even like dresses, they’re itchy!”
Her complaints… they sounded so much like his own. The stuffy atmosphere, snooty rich people, awkward clothes, these were the things both he and Varian hated about balls, and it’s why they avoided them at all costs. The only thing that made these things worth his time…
...was Varian.
Hugo remembers his first ball in Corona. He’d been miserable. It was judgemental noble after judgemental noble, looking down at him because of his heritage, his past, his unorthodox relationship. If Varian hadn’t been there, Hugo would not have lasted 20 minutes without throwing an alchemy bomb.
Having Varian by his side to help him adjust his collar, gag at the nobles who tried to flirt, mock the petty arguments, those were what made formal events passable. Is that why Andrea wanted Varian here? Not to steal him for herself, but so she could have a like mind help her power through this? It was her first formal birthday ball, after all. This was technically Andrea’s introduction to court beyond hiding behind her mother’s skirts, hence the big fuss.
No wonder she wanted Varian here.
Hugo sighed. He felt like a total jerk. Well, he knew he’d been a jerk to dislike a toddler, but it felt justified. Now, not so much. Andrea’s arms were still stretched over her head, and Hugo leaned down to grab them in his own. With one quick motion, he pulled the little princess upright.
“Come on, let’s go find our favorite alchemist,” He said, and Andrea’s face lit up. Still holding his hands, she pulled him through the crowds, letting Hugo look over everyone’s heads to find him. It took a few minutes (how many people did Rapunzel invite?), but they finally spotted Varian chatting with Ricket, who seemed much more at ease. Varian, on the other hand, seemed very annoyed, his eyes flashing with rage. In any other situation, they guy would’ve gotten decked by the shorter alchemist.
Hugo and Andrea shared a knowing look. For all her bratiness, the girl was incredibly perceptive and smart. After all, her taste in people was impeccable.
“Uncle Varian!” She called, speeding up and making Hugo trip slightly as he tried to keep up. Said uncle’s face lit up considerably at the interruption, brightening even more when he saw who she was dragging around.
“Hey you two,” He grinned, and Andrea let go of one of Hugo’s hands to grab onto Varian’s. Reaching over the princess, he gave Hugo a peck on the cheek. “I was just talking to… Rickey?”
The lord’s face turned an ugly purple. “Ricket.” He gritted out. “I do believe I’ve been introduced to your…”
“Boyfriend. Not a servant.” Hugo supplied, grin stretching across his face.
“Yes, it was lovely to meet you… and you as well, princess, I’m honored to meet you.”
Andrea grinned a toothy smile. “I’m not.” Varian’s shoulders shook with hidden laughter.
The noble looked like he was struggling to swallow a grape. He at least had the manners to bow to Andrea before making his leave once more, hopefully for good. Varian hummed, leaning his head on Hugo’s shoulder and glancing down at Andrea.
“I see you two are getting along now?”
“For now, yup.” Hugo popped the p. “And I do believe you owe this young lady a dance? For shame, Varian.”
“Alright, Alright!” Varian lifted his head off of Hugo, and the taller mourned the loss. “I’m gonna need you to let go of her hand, though.”
“No!”
This shocked them both. “No?” Hugo asked.
“You gotta dance too!”
“Oh, now we can share him?” Varian smacked his boyfriend, but otherwise didn’t dispute the claim.
“Just for tonight.” The princess said, puffing up her chest as if she was making a royal decree, clearly copying her mother. She pulled the two of them back onto the dance floor, boyfriends grabbing hands as they went. The three were now forming a small circle, moving in time to the upbeat song now playing.
“Hey Andrea,” Hugo murmured. “You were kidding about the just tonight thing, right?”
“You can have him on weekends.”
“Wha- if anything I need him on weekdays!” The two bickered over custody the rest of the night, the sound of music and Varian’s laughter filling both of their ears.
So maybe Hugo didn’t hate her. But she was still a brat.
Good thing she had Hugo to guide her.
...He was so gonna recruit her to prank Eugene.

Chittercida Knockoffs
There's a few that Varigo didn't mention that I think are fairly similar? Judge for yourself
http://mishelk.deviantart.com/art/A-D-O-P-T-O-P-E-N-656776568
http://chittercida.deviantart.com/art/90-Interstellar-614338963
- Debatable, most of the design is covered in long black fur but the striping and gradient on the side, head and overall palette look 'borrowed' from the chitter
http://mishelk.deviantart.com/art/A-D-O-P-T-C-L-O-S-E-D-655994465
http://chittercida.deviantart.com/art/71-Pretty-Poison-610055510
- I'd say very very similar. Horns, skull, ears same, markings taken basically entirely, also took the piercings/jewelry?? and tongue colour.
Also possibly a fairytail knockoff??
http://mohnot.deviantart.com/art/adopt41-closed-664455138
http://cheepers.deviantart.com/art/Fairytail-Auction-4-Closed-581044075
- Very debatable, but I've come back to the comparision a few times. Smaller but? popiular species I think
It KILLS ME that I do actually enjoy some of the art of Mohnot + Mishelk, but if I can't tell what's original and what's stolen/'borrowed' I'm not going to buy/commission them intentionally
Which is unfortunate as they do some nice outfits and ornate stuff

drama supper
Hi it’s me varigo. tbh I was super stalking this blog when stuff came up about me and mohnot, really interested to see unfiltered opinions and trying to decide whether or not I was being too sensitive about the whole situation. Honestly, I’m not ok with mohnot and what they’re doing AT ALL and I haven’t done anything about it because 1, I had faith that copying me was a phase and they’d find their way eventually and 2, I have Big anxiety. But I’m over it. Here’s the story. It’s kind of long so you could just look at the images and decide for yourself how you feel.
-
Last summer I got a few concerned notes about these adoptables who’s skull faces were similar to mine. I’m not possessive about skull face creatures, people made them before me and people will make them after me. I am possessive about the specifics of my art. It’s small stuff, but it’s /my/ stuff.
These are the adoptables One thing I really can’t stop myself from saying is that these designs are kind of hella? But I feel like I can’t trust any of mohnot’s work based on my experience and the experience of others. If you’re interested, I could bother another artist they’ve definitely “referenced” and see if they still have the screencaps.
Side by side of their adoptable and one of mine. Obv not traced but also obv referenced. They even included the structural line across the bridge of the nose that I hadn’t erased.
This was the first time anything like this had ever happened to me, but idk. I think I handled it as well as I could.
sorry about the weird order, they deleted the conversation as it went on. I just didn’t want to let the copied skull thing go without having done anything. The people who bought the designs at least had a right to know, I think? They didn’t reply after 3. In hindsight, “I don’t want this to be more complicated than it has to be” sounds way more threatening than I meant for it to. I just meant I didn’t want to have to go around noting people and then have mohnot deny they referenced my stuff. Which is what happened anyway so whatever.
I omitted usernames but if it’s needed, I’ll ask them if they’re ok vouching for me. One buyer wasn’t happy with the similarity and the other one already knew. Mohnot refused them refunds which is her right I guess. Wasn’t really a big deal.
These adotables went up a little while after that. The species is a little too close for comfort but I would have let it go. It’s the fact that mohnot had stolen from me before stacked on top of the stolen (or referenced, idk) designs and palettes. and not 2 b petty but ‘son of mars’ is a name i’ve used for one of my adoptables in the past http://varigo.deviantart.com/art/Tiny-siren-flatsale-closed-547974600 which someone else said to me was probably done to spite me. I don’t know, I just thought it was weird.
This time I was annoyed and I made a journal asking people not to buy these adoptables. I deleted the journal a little while ago because I thought they were done.. referencing my stuff and I didn’t want to needlessly besmirch them, but please believe that I was gentle as All Fuck and asked people not to comment. A couple people did anyway but I was mad and of the mindset “If I can’t stop mohnot from stealing my stuff, I can’t stop people from getting mad about them stealing my stuff”. You can fault me for being too salty. I was really, really salty. The adoptables were deleted.
These adoptables went up a while after that: http://mohnot.deviantart.com/art/adopts-batch-closed-655965431 Honestly… not too bad? The anatomy is, again, a Little too close for comfort considering my history with mohnot, but, again, I WOULD HAVE LET IT GO, EXCEPT there was now someone else with a similar style also referencing my designs.
obvious:
http://mishelk.deviantart.com/art/A-D-O-P-T-C-L-O-S-E-D-655753678 (theirs) http://chittercida.deviantart.com/art/77-Swamp-Lord-612040451 (mine)
http://mishelk.deviantart.com/art/A-D-O-P-T-C-L-O-S-E-D-655994465 (theirs) http://chittercida.deviantart.com/art/71-Pretty-Poison-610055510 (mine)
debatable:
http://mishelk.deviantart.com/art/A-D-O-P-T-C-L-O-S-E-D-655572763 (theirs) http://chittercida.deviantart.com/art/76-Monster-Under-the-Bed-610057203(mine)
http://mishelk.deviantart.com/art/A-D-O-P-T-C-L-O-S-E-D-656741770 (theirs) http://chittercida.deviantart.com/art/103-Champagne-Supernova-626537324(mine)
Didn’t help that mohnot left comments on their profile. I figured they were friends.
I made a quick journal, agian, just asking people not to buy the designs. This journal was maybe a bit crass and short, I didn’t feel like preaching like last time. I just said, “these make me uncomfortable, don’t buy them”. Mohnot sent me a note this time.
I highlighted bits that confirmed that they had lied to me about not referencing my work in the past. As you can see, I wanted to communicate that I didn’t like the similarities but I’d be willing to drop it.
Can I point out that I’m being way nicer than I need to be?? I’m literally complimenting them because fuck it, they make some really cool designs! But like I said earlier, how can anybody know what’s original and what’s been referenced from another artist? That’s speculation, don’t take it to heart I guess.
Deviantion linked in the note: http://ospone.deviantart.com/art/Adopt-NUMBER-2-620895283 tbh I’m really confused about this part, because I /know/ for a fact that she had left a sarcastic comment on this deviation along the lines of “how dare you steal from varigo, you scum!!1” obviously mocking me and the people who were defending me. But comments can’t be deleted and there aren’t any hidden comments, so i honestly don’t know what happened there. You can trust me on that or not, maybe someone else who saw it can vouch for me.
Anyway, that was the end of that. Journal deleted /literally/ minutes after I posted it.
Then the drama on this blog happened and I read everyone’s opinions and the general consensus that mohnot was not stealing from me, and I got a little salty because I have proof that she was, but I was going to let it go. Her species seemed to be going in it’s own direction so I thought eeeh fuck it.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!
http://mohnot.deviantart.com/art/Carvitalium-676880425 (hers)
This was uploaded just a little while ago. Her species reference sheet is, again, too close for my comfort. The layout I could let go but a lot of the artwork is referenced from my species sheet and I’m just not ok with it.
http://varigo.deviantart.com/art/Chittercida-651789351 (mine)
And now I see that she’s not going to stop. Like… listen, it’s not the worst thing in the world. idk maybe she’s bullying me because I’ve been such a puss through the whole thing. Maybe she likes that I keep coming back to this, but, not trying to buy your pity, I’m anxious as hell and I don’t know what the right thing to do would be. I guess… I just want people to know I’m unhappy with it. And I just want people to know the history behind this so they can come to their own conclusion. You read the whole thing and you’re not on my side? Honestly, that’d be fine. Just so long as the facts are all out there in the open.
I hope this filled your drama quota bc tbh I feel a little refreshed after letting it all out. Cheers. I won’t judge you if you still like mohnot’s stuff. I will be a little salty though. But whatever.

Unintentional Love
Okay this is meant to be day 2 of Varigo week but I am behind so here you go, first kiss scenario - im so sorry about how late this is, im a few days behind and im upset about that too. anyway, i hope you enjoy.
------------------
Varian, in every way, shape and form, was done with Hugo and all his bullshit. Like seriously, this guy couldn’t be more annoying even if he tried. Varian made this all very, very clear to the other, so it came as a massive surprise when he got a text asking for Varian to be his fake boyfriend and date to prom.
The boy had made fun of him relentlessly: never hesitating to make a quip about his hair or tease him for his close friendship with Isla and Nuru. The blonde was constantly looking for different ways to make fun of him, but deep down Varian knew he wasn’t being serious. Though, the teasing was...less than fun for someone on the receiving end. He certainly wasn’t the worst, but he wasn’t the best whatsoever. Far from it.
If it were anyone else, Varian would’ve immediately declined his offer - spent the night like he planned in his room with Ruddiger playing some video game before having dinner with his dad and heading back up but...well, Hugo was offering some good perks. I mean, full payment for his suit, ticket AND $200 anyway? It was insane! All to hold some insufferable blonde’s hand for  a few hours and dance with him! It was like a deal of a lifetime!
Needless to say, Varian was all in at the mention of money.
All he could think about as he donned the black jacket and buttoned up his teal shirt, reaching out to grab his black tie, was the sheer amount of lab equipment he could get with what Hugo was offering. Even the thought of it made his mouth water as he finished fixing his tie, taking a moment in the mirror to fix his appearance slightly before Quirin’s voice rang out from downstairs. He rushed downstairs, eager to get the night over with so he could finally get his hands on some more beakers and test tubes, tucking his hair behind his ear. “Hey, you ready to go?” Hugo asked from his place in the hallway and Varian’s, standing at the bottom of the stairs, mouth went dry.
Hugo stood in his hallway, his hands in his pockets with a black jacket, dark green shirt and black tie, matching Varian’s attire. Blonde hair was tied up in a ponytail with a smug smile on his face, showing off his undercut and his green eyes glanced up at Varian from behind his obnoxiously large glasses. Had his eyes always looked that bright? His cheeks began to heat up slightly before he shook his head and smiled. “I’m..yeah. Yeah, let’s go.” His voice shook as he walked beside Hugo towards the door and into the cold air of the night.
“Thanks for this, goggles.” Hugo muttered as they drove towards their high school, his hand on the steering wheel and eyes ahead. No sign of insincerity was present in his voice, Varian could swear he saw a red flush on the other’s cheeks. “You...really didn’t have to. But you did. And I appreciate it. A lot.” Hugo confessed as he tapped his finger to the song playing through the old car’s radio - it sounded like something by The 1975. Of course Hugo would like them.
“It's no problem. After all, now you owe me two hundred dollars so..” he started, breaking out into a little chuckle. “I don’t mind helping you out every once in a while, Hugo. Just don't make it weird.”   “You’re the one who will make it weird, goggles. I mean, your face is weird enough so-” the blonde laughed as Varian punched his arm, back to their familiar banter and teasing. It was comfortable. Nice. He bit the inside of his cheek as he watched the other boy get lost in a fit of laughter, tears building in his eyes and the smile on his face being wide and infectious. Wow. He really could be beautiful sometimes.
  Wait, what?
Varian leaned back in his seat, gazing out of his window. Well, he knew Hugo was an attractive guy - having many boyfriends and girlfriends in the short time Varian knew him. What he lacked in looks, he made up for in personality. Varian swore he certainly was...a character. Hugo’s sarcasm was excessive and his ego was just as large as the stupid glasses on his nose, but..he was funny, and when he was sincere with people, it was the sweetest thing Varian had ever experienced. Like when he was ill and Hugo kept delivering care packages of work, lab supplies and candy to his house anonymously. Varian only found out it was him when Nuru let it slip - the man in question’s face going bright red as he stuttered excuses.
The car halted and the click of Hugo’s seat belt broke him from his train of thought. “You coming?” Hugo questioned, Varian nodding frantically and working to undo his seatbelt with slightly shaky hands. Usually he wouldn’t go to events like these, the mere thought causing crippling fear to him, but he felt safe with Hugo and the money was worth it. Nevertheless, he took Hugo’s hand in his and began to walk inside happily.
As soon as they walked through the double doors to the gym, the music instantly surrounded him and filled his brain, the bass pounding through the floor and shaking him to the core. Couples danced around them, giggles leaving their lips and drinks in their hands as they swayed on the dance floor. Subconsciously, Varian shuffled closer to the boy beside him and snuggled into his arm, gripping onto his arm as though it were his only salvation in the world.
“Hey, I’m gonna go get us some drinks.” Hugo yelled out over the music, carefully pulling his hand away and ruffling Varian’s hair, the smaller male slapping his hand away. Hugo laughed as he headed into the sea of people and, once again, Varian stood alone in the middle of the hall waiting.
Everything was going fine until Leon decided to step over. Leon who was the biggest homophobe in the school and hated gay people with a burning passion. He was just as passionate as Varian was with his sciences, which was….wow it was excessive. He didn’t get it. Why did the kid hate people so much? It made no sense. Oh well, he was sure Leon wouldn’t bother him at all - he hadn’t done anything wrong.
  Well he was wrong.
It all happened far too fast. First, Leon had yelled out his name, then he ran over, ‘tripping’ and tipping the punch all over him while their peers laughed and ridiculed him the whole time. His cheeks flushed in discomfort and anxiety as the laughing continued, rushing out of the doors to the hall as tears rolled down his cheeks.
There he sat on the wall, covered in punch and hugging his knees as music blared from inside and vibrant, neon lights flashed, also from the building. He couldn’t believe Leon would do something like that to him - just because he went to prom with a guy instead of a girl. It sucked - the fabric of his shirt sticking to his skin awkwardly and smelling of a rancid mixture of fruit and alcohol. Silence surrounded him until the hall doors swung open and someone took a seat beside him on the wall.
“I’m sorry about what he did. I didn’t know.” he sighed apologetically, Varian glancing over at Hugo as he lit a cigarette and took a drag from it quietly. The moonlight hit his face perfectly, showing off all the sharp angles of his jawline and the tiny constellation-like freckles that were littered all over his cheeks. He was beautiful - and Varian knew it.
“It’s okay, Hugh. Really.” He replied, fiddling with the bottom of his shirt quietly as he bit the inside of his cheek, sighing. “He’s just an asshole.”
“No-you don’t understand.” Hugo began, his voice taking on a nervous tone as a hand threaded through his hair, pulling on the individual strands. “I just...god, Varian..I wanted to ask you to prom, but...I didn’t know how. I just..really like you, goggles. I really, really like you.”
A smile drifted onto V’s lips as he stared at Hugo in amazement. “I like you too, Hugo.” He whispered under his breath, placing a kiss on Hugo’s cheek gently before the other turned his head and pressed their lips together, their only company being the stars in the sky and the pittering rain falling from the dark sky.
