A whole year ago my bf and I started roughly brainstorming a Borderlands x Bullet Train crossover AU that we started looking at again while playing BL3 recently :V

Vasi's (the Son) dad is a bandit warlord weapons manufacturer, and the Twins are bounty hunters more than vault hunters. Something something they're hired to rescue Vasi from a psycho camp that ambushed and kidnapped him n his friends.

At some point in the rescue process the three stumble upon a eridian artefact that inflicts siren powers on Vasi and Tangerine when they accidentally touch it at the same time. Vasi's father is known for seeking out sirens so now the Twins cannot take him back, and are on the run w him from his own family (Vasi is not thrilled at being re-kidnapped, in a way, and makes the process petulantly unpleasant bc what is the POINT without obnoxious enemies-to-lovers Tangerine/the Son)

Instead of an oni mask I was trying to go for smth based off a saurian, the shield design is a call to the slant on the orthodox cross. His shirt is a joke reference to the bloody eyes and momomon glasses from the movie lmao I need to do a side view of the mask to better depict the curvature bc the 1st go at the design is just laid 'flat' so I could detail work it at the time

Doi

Yesterday I told you about the Yulyoch and the danger that it poses. Today? I want to tell you the secret that it hides.

You see, a trip into the Yulyoch may be a one-way trip, but it is by no means a guaranteed trip to the afterlife. When the current rips you away from the world you know, it sends you plummeting down down down, racing you along stone that has been polished into a smooth surface over eons, before dropping you into a large cavern.

Almost 3,000 feet deep into the dirt and stone, you’ll find yourself in a rather large cave system, known to those who call it home as Doi. It’s like a whole other world there, the only true light coming from the bioluminescent glow of the lichen, moss, and vines that cover the walls casting the rooms in a pale blue glow. Mushrooms taller than even the largest Kiall dot the landscape, and from the main cavern you can see 6 smaller offshoots.

The river runs straight through the center of the main cavern, with a sturdy bridge made of stone and clay connecting to the two halves. Running across the river you’ll find 7 different nets, each designed to catch different size items, with the one at the end of the cavern so tight knit that only water can pass. These allow the Doi to collect any and everything that may wash down from above - from supplies to new citizens.

On average, only 3-5 of the 10 or so people who enter will survive the trip from Yulyoch to the cavern, as there is a high risk of hitting your head on a rock or drowning during the trip.

The river disappears beyond the curve of the cavern, but if you stand at just the right spot on the Northern shore, you can spot a small beach they call Hadni - it’s the last place on the river where you can turn back and live in the Doi community. Beyond that point, your odds of survival drop to a mere 5%.

On the northern side of the cavern, you’ll find a handful of small buildings, storage and gathering places. You’ll also find three offshoot caverns known as Raru, Mogri, and Har.

If you enter the Raru offshoot, you’ll be greeted by an almost 2 mile walk to a cave that’s around 2 acres in size, and it gets it name from the Vasi word for dew. Raru is closest to the magma chamber that heats the whole system, and the high temperature and humidity means that the walls are covered in water at all times. A small species of cave bird calls this area home, and it’s a nice place to relax when you need a break.

To the east of Raru lies Mogri, named for the Vasi word for plant/bury. Of course this is where the best soil is in all of the caves, and they manage to grow a handful of crops in the cavern, enough to ensure their community can eat and survive.

Next to Mogri lies Har (Vasi for light or illuminate), and while the other caves are lovely it’s my personal favorite. The rock walls here are made of a rather reflective surface and with all of the bioluminescent glow, this cave is so bright it’s almost blinding at times. The people of Doi have managed to get their hands on seeds from plants from above and they seem to thrive in this small cave. It’s like they carved out a chunk of the world above and planted it down deep below the surface. There are even a handful of chickens in this cave after one person fell in while running from a bear who she’d stumbled across while gathering eggs from her chickens. It was hard, but they managed to hatch a small flock of the birds.

The Southern shore of the main cavern is covered in the large mushrooms, creating a kaleidoscope of colors. These mushrooms provide oxygen and food for the Doi people, and they are carefully managed. On this side of the river, you’ll also find the remaining 3 caverns: Rayi, Ral, and Vikbus.

Rayi (Vasi for safe, steady) and Vikbus (Vasi for life, live) are where are all of the Doi people build their homes. They’re the least humid of all the caverns and while they may stay cooler than the others, their temperature is more stable and with the shorter ceiling heights there’s a lot less echoing, making it ideal for having privacy in small stone homes.

Between Rayi and Vikbus lies the smallest of all the caverns, Ral (Vasi for Hope). Small shrines line the edges of Ral, each dedicated to a different favored deity. As new people arrive with new favorites deities, new shrines appear over time. This cavern is their spiritual home and it’s not uncommon for new arrivals to spend a lot of their time here, looking for peace or guidance from any deity who will listen.

Life in Doi is very simple, and those who call it home tend to be forgiving, not holding your life above against you. It doesn’t tend to take long to find your place in the community, whether that be in gardening, livestock, healing, or construction. Some people find love, some simply find a new reason to keep going. The Doi are a very unique culture, one that I can’t imagine existing anywhere but in that cavern beneath the ground.

Remember when I told you about the Okini, and I mentioned they were only native to one cave system in Erothe/Feirr? Yeah, this is where I meant. The Okini live in Doi, and keep the people there company. The Okini are almost a thing of legend with how rare it is to see them outside of the Doi caverns, in fact the only time they are seen is when their chosen companion manages to escape…

This post is getting rather long I’d say, so you’ll just have to check back tomorrow to learn about how to escape Doi.

Artemis: Yes, someone has to save the tastebuds in his house. Pretty average but has picked up a lot of different dishes from all his travels. 

Samir: Yes! Like his fc, so good that it could’ve been his job. Just one part of his malewife ability

Bijou: Yes, but prefers for others to cook. 

Asier: No, to be fair, he doesn’t have to eat.

Aspis: Loves to eat but will be in the kitchen too, he cooks very well.

Crowe: Technically he could learn it any time and be good but has not. So no. Have to keep it fair somewhere.

Vesna: Don’t.

Dominicus: No, a hold over of that former rich kid.

Tannim: Honestly, hidden culinary god but no one ever assumes because his stuff ‘looks so basic.’ 

Noita: Unless it’s something long and slow or potato.....no. Generally no.

Kirika: Chef-tier. All of it looks instagram worthy cute. Best at sweets.

Sullivan: Does chucking stuff over a fire count?

Sorin: Yes, he helps run his family’s ryokan so he’s had to learn some of the good dishes. 

Altair: Nope, all these years and not a single bit of cooking done. 

Yukina: Pretty average cook.

Makari: Pft, no. Rich kid, never had to

Arsene: Yes, he had to learn after leaving and is decent at it.

Gisilbert: No, why would he?

Biserka: Only if she is dedicating every ounce of concentration so not really (Wait wait wait, doesn’t that mean that Vasi--)

Nikita: No, also rich kid and has the funds to just...eat at some nice place.

Hijiri: Yes

Beatrix: Yes, has saved a wedding from disaster because of it. Leave nothing to chance. 

Alec: Could but doesn’t, apparently villainy can pay for restaurants every night.

Erdene: Surprisingly, yes.

Kyri: Yes but can’t bake. 

Taehyun: Yes but would never let anyone know so he never has to cook. Anything with wine in it is exceptional.

Jasper: No and it’s hilarious because he has to when ‘babysitting.’

Mikoto: Yep. No one would ask her because they think she wouldn’t. But she is a great cook. Sometimes questionable ingredients or styling though.

“ - oh goodness !! saints, you startled me! ” usually vasilka did the spooking around here, skittish and light-footed as she was. sneaking around was her preferred method of existing in the little palace, as if she hoped people would forget her existence if she acted she wasn’t here. that being said, this hallway was supposed to be safe, seeing as it was part of her quarters in the palace. everyone knew this because the general had made it quite clear there’d be consequences if one dared trespass and spook ‘his’ precious saint. he seemed rather prepared to do whatever it took to keep her here after wearing her down with his centuries long nagging. “ y-you’re not supposed to be here, this part of the little palace is restricted. you’ll get in trouble if someone catches you. ”

i need a break from writing & midterm studying sO here’s some cute self-indulgent rhia/red headcanons:

rhia’s body temperature tends to run pretty cold, so she’s constantly either stealing red’s jackets/cloaks or cuddling up to him (even more so because she often expresses her affection through physical touch)

both of them have very uh. eccentric sleep schedules, for various reasons, but it does mean they can often be found in the kitchen at early hours of the morning, either cooking/snacking and just talking quietly, enjoying the other’s company. philosophical conversations are common for these two! and rhia gets heart eyes every time red starts to ramble

on a similar note, rhia brings red meals when he’s working & doing his research because she knows he forgets a lot. red knows exactly how she likes her khav in the mornings, and will often bring her a cup in bed- especially if she didn’t slept well the night before, due to nightmares or other reasons

one of their favorite ways to hang out is when they’re both curled up somewhere, reading their own books. red runs his hands through her hair and rhia definitely leans into him, and they’ll occasionally say something about what they’re reading- but the thing is they don’t always have to talk, because just being there and taking in each other’s company is enough

red has a habit of absentmindedly kissing the scars on rhia’s hands, and when the weather gets colder/she’s unable to write easily because of the pain, he helps her with anything she needs there. he’s also tried to find spells that help!

when they were kids at the circle, they used to write each other letters and pass notes all the time- both in class and just in general! initially they just wrote them normally, but eventually they switched to writing in code, or hiding their writing with invisibility spells and using specific tricks to show the messages, that also change as they start dating! they rekindle the habit again when they’re rebuilding their relationship in the shepherds, and it’s not uncommon for them to leave sweet letters in each other’s rooms/belongings. (yes this was inspired entirely by one (1) option in the alpha. yes i have a two part fic for this concept planned <3)

rhia is a whole foot shorter than red, so her dragging him down for a kiss isn’t uncommon! she’s also at the perfect height to rest her head on his shoulder when they’re sitting next to each other. however... this also means red can pick her up more easily 👀

they have lots of picnic dates together, and after rhia introduces him to one of her favorite spots, it’s not uncommon for them to be seen stargazing together on the roofs of Haven’s buildings
