#i had an uncomfortable realization this afternoon#i think part of what makes me uncomfortable with more...intimate versions of mckirk is because the age gap there#is similar to the age gap between myself and two of the people that abused me#of course i recognize that the context is wildly different there#two consenting adults vs one minor being incredibly inappropriate with a much younger minor who was unable to consent in any way#but i think even just that very minor piece of pattern recognition is enough to get my hackles raised#because it's not about the characters themselves there has been nothing in bones character to ever indicate that kind of malice#its nothing to do with the actual ship or characters it's literally just the age gap that every once in a while just makes my insides squirm#i dont think i would have ever had the realization at all if i hadnt had a nightmare about jim being attacked and assulted last night#bones wasnt even in the dream it was just a couple of older officers but it kept replaying in my brain till i wrote out the aftermath#and getting him patched up and it was the context of jim going through a similar trauma to mine and coming to me for help#that i connected the dots#i mean within in the context of how i usually write bones jim didnt want to tell him at first becaus i write bones as being an sa survivor#and jim didnt want to trigger him in all of this so he asked me for help instead#but writing him going to someone closer to his own age over some closer to the age of the people who hurt him kind of connected the dots#it's definitely a me issue and its not actually anything to do with the characters or the ship in general#its just a really unfortunate happenstance

fic writer asks: 9&10
Thank you so much for these, Leni! 💙
9) What fic meant the most to you to write?
I loved writing a bit less broken, my first completed Final Fantasy VII fic and the most direct thing I've published yet dealing with the asexuality spectrum (I've done a demisexual Bones fic, but hadn't used a specific spectrum label in the text of the fic; this was the first fic where I had someone talk about labels outright).
My experience of figuring out I was ace was a bit different than most people's--I never felt like I was broken or wrong as such, because for me realizing I was ace was me sorting through a lot of compulsory allosexuality and being like, oh wait. I don't feel that attraction, I never did, and I used to pretend I did without even realizing it because I wanted to fit in, and I don't have to do that anymore. Realizing that was so freeing and put so much of my life into context I had never had before. Part of why Cloud meant so much to me as a character was that his arc progresses along similar lines; he thinks he is one thing, finds out later he very much is not, and then has to put himself back together again into who he really is. As someone who figured out in the past few years I'm queer, ace, and probably ND, I was like "yep, same," and Cloud's writing already has such strong ace vibes I knew I was making it my headcanon. I loved writing a fic where someone who feels like they don't fit anywhere finds out that they're wrong and that there's a word for it and other people like them out there. It's a feeling I've fortunately gotten really familiar with and I love writing about it.
10) What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?
Out of the fics I finished and posted this year, I was so glad to post my Trektober piece, i knew a man who was afraid to love! McKirk inspiration has been harder to come by than I would have liked this year, but getting it back and doing a fun piece--twice as long as my usual length, too!--was such a fun time, and I was so pleased so many people liked it. Next year I'm hoping to finish some of the others I started for that month 😂
Of the pieces I'm still working on, I'm writing a Vashwood fic I'm super happy is coming along so well; it's close to cracking 5k words and still isn't finished, which is long for me! It's the most consistently inspired I've been for a while; I went into it with only the vaguest ideas of the conversations I wanted characters to have and sitting down and having the dialogue really flow and be peppered with details I hadn't really thought about consciously is so great. I'm really excited to finish it out soon and get it posted for folks to read.

ST:TOS 101- The Man Trap
Tumblr media
Here’s the thing, if we’re not supposed to ship Kirk with McCoy and Spock, then they shouldn’t have done so many soft gaze/smolder close-ups of Shatner when he was looking at either men. I don’t remember that happening a lot with women. I guess we’ll see as the rewatch continues.
Either way, let us talk about the episode where McCoy brings the boys around to meet an old flame, and it does not go to plan. And I will be sneaking in a few of my old graphics, just because.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m showing this first shot just because I like to see Uhura up front occasionally as well as seeing Spock in the captain’s chair. Yes, I will add in a shippy cap later for those of you who ship it. The second shot is to show that there are some changes from The Cage, and one of them is that they upgraded their big screen TV.
During the rewatch, one of the funny moments is when my daughter glanced at the screen and was convinced that Starfleet was too cheap to get pants that fit. It took me too long to figure out where she was getting that idea.
Tumblr media
In case you can’t see where she got the idea, she thought the phasers were pulling down the waistbands of Kirk and Darnell’s pants. I had to tell her that those were sash/holsters and not actually their midriffs showing.
Tumblr media
My daughter felt the need to point out that these were not flowers, instead they were a sprig of wheat. But I do like that we get full on McKirk flirting. Yes, I will be spending this post talking about this particular ship. I cannot help it. It colors everything I see in this episode. For example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
McCoy sees Nancy as she was when he last saw her: 10 years younger than she should be. Darnell sees some random woman from a pleasure planet (and is very rude and disrespectful about how he announces it). Meanwhile, what does Kirk see?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He sees Nancy looking probably about the age she should be. Now, this could mean Kirk is attracted to distinguished looking women with greying hair… or he just really wants reassurance that McCoy isn’t going to leave him for someone younger and prettier. You can guess which one I choose to believe… though I wouldn’t argue against that other one either.
I will not be posting screencaps of it, but I am still disgusted that Kirk just reached into the dead man’s mouth. Apparently, in the future, no one knows better than to go around poking and proding dead bodies with their bare hands. I’ll ignore the question of how the fuck he knew there would be something in there given that he wasn’t shown to be looking at all, he just honed directly onto that poor guys mouth. I will also ignore how obvious it was that the actor was opening his mouth wider.
Side note: I’m impressed with how commited they are to making sure everyone in the outdoor scenes looks like they’re fresh out of a sauna except, it seems, for “Nancy.” I’m wondering if that’s just because it’s an actress, or because the character is a freaking salt vampire. My daughter said “both.”
One of these is strictly for the Spock/Uhura shippers, while the other is for me because both drama and damn but Nichelle is stunning in every scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When McCoy finally figures out that Darnell died from a sudden loss of salt, the follow scene occurs that I love:
Tumblr media
I love it both because of how flirty Kirk gets with McCoy as well as the faces McCoy makes and the way he says “error.” Also, poor Spock stuck in the corner forced to watch as these two idiots flirt with each other next to a dead body. You know, I think I need to figure out the coloring I used on this set because I think I like it better.
Tumblr media
Yes, this is actual dialog from the show. It makes sense in context, but still… Also, this next one is just for me:
Tumblr media
This is the bit that really bothers my daughter:
Tumblr media
Not only does Rand grab a piece of celery and take a bite, she also just puts it back and carries on like it came that way. Is Sulu just supposed to be eating after her? Are they really that close? While I don’t love that they had Rand being ogled earlier in this scene, or the fact that she’s essentially a glorified go-fer (my daughter isn’t happy about that either), I do enjoy this scene. Only half the reason is because that plant is just a freaking person wearing a decorated glove.
Tumblr media
I just needed to put these together to ask… why does the salt vampire have to come across as a bit creepy? I get that it’s just biting its knuckle… but still, it’s screaming “I shouldn’t be trusted alone with anyone.”
Tumblr media
Yes, I figured out what coloring I used, or, more specifically, what coloring I skipped. I could go back and redo all the caps, but I’m too lazy for that. I will redo this one for the Spock/Uhura shippers, though:
Tumblr media
This set is for me and any other McCoy/Kirk shippers:
Tumblr media
Apparently, the salt vampire isn’t just in it for the salt. It needs that lurve.
Tumblr media
You need to understand, one of the things this show is loved for is the ridiculous physical aspects. What do I mean by that? Why, the odd version of zigzag running that Kirk does. It wouldn’t actually keep him from getting shot, but it is amusing to watch how his lower half moves much more than his upper half. Also, I just really like how this set makes it look like Spock is trying to take Kirk alive if you don’t have the context.
Tumblr media
Obviously more happens in this episode, but there are two things that I think actually matter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I get that Kirk is supposed to be frozen/hypnotized, but the salt vamp is moving extremely slow. It adds up to make it look like they’re competing for most campy actor in scene award. The second cap… It’s hilarious because, not only is it very obvious that neither actor makes contact with the other, but it also looks like Spock is holding an invisible bat.
End of episode tallies (details by daughter)
UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR: 04 (Darnell’s unnecessary comment about the pleasure planet, Uhura overtly flirting with Spock, Rand stealing a singular bite of Sulu’s lunch, Starfleet crew overtly ogling Rand. The salt vampire, not being Starfleet, is exempt from this counter.)
Starfleet Are Cheapskates: 01 (McCoy has no blanket :()
Reasons Why Enterprise Needs a Counselor: 01 (McCoy had to kill a creature that looked like a woman he cares for)
Early Episode Weirdness: 01 (Spock claims Vulcan has no moon)
Final thoughts:
Me: It's got enough cheese to keep me happy with enough McKirk flirting to keep me coming back for more.
Daughter: It's a much better introduction to the series than The Cage. It's also very cheesy in a fun way.

Here's a question: what do Chris and Phil think of Jim with Spock and/or McCoy? Considering phil/bones and chris/spock worked together, and since pike seems protective of Jim, I think there's possibly something may be interesting there but I wouldn't know what.
(Note: This is gonna be all McKirk, because that’s my jam; it’s also all gonna be rooted in my “horizons” universe, because I can’t not, so YMMV headcanon-wise.)
Early in their relationship, Chris, like many people, kind of writes Jim off as a playboy. Don’t misunderstand me; Chris gets that Jim’s obviously not a womanizer, because A) manipulation is not in his sexual toolbox; B) anything without enthusiastic consent is as repugnant to Jim as it should be to anyone with a soul; and C) a minor detail, but women are not the only gender on his agenda - but he does play the field, and enthusiastically so. Accordingly, Chris’ only hopes for Jim’s love life are that he stays safe and doesn’t get his heart bruised too badly.
This changes, seeing him with Len.
Chris and Jim share a passion for command, exploration, and pretty ships. Phil and Len share a passion for medicine. Those two dyads work together in professional contexts and develop unique bonds on the basis of those shared passions. However, personality-wise, it goes crossways: I think Chris and Len have eerily similar personalities, and my conception of Phil is, in many ways, very similar to Jim.
Jim and Phil are brilliant and shiny, relentless optimists, extroverts, believers in the inherent good of people, those unafraid to take a risk for the greater good. Chris and Len are also undoubtedly brilliant, but sharply introverted, far more cautious, and much more wary of getting hurt, or of getting people they love hurt. (See: Pike’s office scene in STID. Prime example.)
Sexually, Jim and Phil can do casual. Chris and Len cannot. They have tried, and it backfired, epically.
All four of them have similarly fucked-up relationships with love. Jim’s clusterfuck of an upbringing means he wouldn’t know love if it bit him in the ass. Len doesn’t trust it post-divorce. Phil associates it with pain, having loved for seemingly forever and not been able to act. And Chris no longer trusts himself to love without fucking it up somehow.
Chris is not a tactical genius for nothing. He sees patterns.
Chris sees pieces of himself in Len.
Chris sees bits of Phil in Jim.
Chris sees tons of his relationship with Phil in Len and Jim’s relationship.
Chris knows how he feels about Phil, and, well, extrapolation is not difficult.
Oh.
So, to answer your question: Chris and Phil both see what’s between Jim and Len before Jim and Len are even up to acknowledging it to themselves. They watch Jim and Len take care of one another, watch them have one another’s backs - and watch them look at one another when the other isn’t looking. They know that that relationship is different for all the same reasons that Chris and Phil are different - there’s something in there that defies explanation, but that serves as a firm assurance that everything’s gonna be okay.
(It’s love, but nobody’s using that word yet.)
Chris and Phil champion Jim and Len getting together. So when the younger two finally pull their heads out of their asses, there is celebrating.
(Though not so much as when Chris and Phil finally do likewise.)
