homescreen + lockscreen + most recent selfie
tagged by @vyvesvi ~~thank you for tagging me! 💕
lockscreen: It's a painting by Monet, i did a little research and apparently this work is part of a 6 paintings deries of The Japanese Bridge. Oof... I really like it, it's pleasant and calming to look at ~also, listen to no.5 by penomeco, amazing song
homescreen: I hate to put two differents pictures so it's the same from the lockscreen. And uhn i don't have a lot of apps :v
selfie: It is not a selfie or something like that because i rarely take photos of myself, and to look for in my drive it would take ages so... Have my dog, Catarina!!! I had to cut the photo but she was the real highlight! I've had her for three or four years, i adopted her at am adoption fair. And she only has three legs :v
And i'll tag... anyone! If you saw this and want to do it feel free! Say that i tagged you, i'll love to see yours.

i don't even have coherent comments on lizzo's new album. it's so...authentic??? it feels like a conversation and a diary at once, like she's dealing with/has dealt with some difficult emotions but at the same time it's imbued with so much joy??? i love it. and the samples are (deliberately) obvious and perfectly placed, i particularly love the lauryn hill reference 😭 idk if this is cultural but it just feels so...familiar but fresh? like i was just 🥺🥰🤯😭 my entire first listen. definitely a top release this year.

looking ahead
kpop wishes for 2023
i do actually want better for boy groups. this year we saw a lot of freshness amongst girl groups - it seems like we're finally, officially out of the blackpink & itzy inspired edm/girl crush/quirky girl crush phase and while some groups have done this well, i'm glad we're out. in particular we have the return of christian horse girl music with ily:1 and csr, a fresh sound (for lack of a better word) derived from black house and rnb - new jeans and aaa- that's seeing some really effective intermingling with more traditional kpop sounds - fifty fifty. we still have "girl crush" but much more refined with lesserafim. we have pop punk with choi yena (*some men are doing this as well, but overall less than there should've been/many who took it in a "noise music but with guitars this time" kind of way). we have more unique "elegant" concepts with strong beats and hooks like ive and kwon eunbi. we have straight up experimental with billlie. the rise of stayc in general. with many of the top ggs, the sale cutoffs required to be a "top" or "midtier" gg have ballooned (so much so that i'd personally like nugupromoter to change their criteria to be honest) but the men...what freshness has come out of this year? that's not to say AT ALL that men did nothing good this year, or that all bgs all sounded the same this year. but 2022 for boy groups has not been clearly distinguishable from 2021, in my opinion. unfortunately, i'm not sure where to look for the "newness" that i'm hoping for. the companies that i think have some potential all have little reason to actually do anything new: sm (theyre too wrapped up in kwangya for me to take recent releases seriously tbh, they also have no stake in creating something fully new), kq (ateez has a very unique concept, i think they have to prove with their new bg that theyre not a one trick pony), hybe (depends too much on the creative director. trainee A disbanding is interesting because it seemed like the direction they were suited for wasn't very fresh? it was giving skz/early bts/enhypen. i wonder if this means concept change?). groups that have potential but idk: tempest, nine.i, onlyoneof (who are already delivering on freshness but their current project is on its 3rd year so.... (pretty sure its done after january though!)), txt (if they leave this sad angry boy thing behind), smnbg?, boys planet group (although based on the handling of kepler i dont trust them). next wish kind of dovetails with this one:
i think i want more house music. this isn't a prediction like pop punk but i just think it's the right time for it. i don't think that i'll be able to predict the popular sound moving forward but i think there's a lot of space for bgs to step into the late shinee/vixx zone (thinking about view and eau de vixx). very dancey, bass heavy, and mature. more vocals, less rapping. but this is just my personal taste rather than an educated guess
more selfishly, i'd like an actual, good, survival show. no xenophobia, no dozens, no forced drama, no voting manipulation.
more girl groups releasing full albums. i think it's straight up shameful that starship has given ive 3 single albums but they're following the pack unfortunately. why did aespa debut with a fucking single. can we at least pretend to be about the music?
this is going on everyone's end of year lists but truly, no more children debuting. it's not going to happen but what business does a 13 year old have having a job??? it's interesting (and unsurprising) but male idols are debuting at a slightly older average age than female idols it seems. if this "gg era" ends, will it be a reprieve? i don't want it to come to that honestly.
8d creative girl group. i don't think this is happening but i'd love for onlyoneof to have a sister group with the same quality of vision and concept.
more high quality comeback visuals/magazine shoots. looking at the magazine shoots c-pop idols do...i want that for kpop. i also think photobooks have to be wayyy more interesting than they are now in order for me to understand the hype.
more cross group and cross-company collaborations!! i don't like the hyper-insular nature of kpop right now. certain 2nd and 3rd generation interactions (especially the simple ones honestly) just. don't happen now and i find it so odd?
goals for 2023 (as they relate to kpop)
i talk about this a little later but i'd like to write more! i know i have to force myself to do it but it might be good for me to write for myself on a topic that i'm interested in., kind of as an exercise?
i'd like to listen to more jpop. i kind of find it really daunting to get into, but there are a bunch of jpop/japanese artists that i really like and i would like to find more! the same goes for cpop, but a lot of cpop just isn't listed on non-chinese sites.
deconstruct my relationship with kpop. this sounds odd, but i wonder how it's affected my brain sometimes, like watching all of these beautiful skinny people who constantly call themselves fat and ugly while working out 13 hours a day and having an army of personal stylists and plastic surgeons. like that can't be good for the psyche, right? i've attempted before to think about blackness and kpop but not really...thoughtfully? this would be a good time to kind of...manage that, i guess.
the future of this blog?
the short story is that i'm not sure if i want to keep this blog? like i won't delete but i'm kind of just considering how i feel posting here and stuff. i still like tumblr but talking to myself in this way isn't as fun as it used to be lmfao. i think a lot of the people who i used to interact with have gone ia so it's possible that that could have something to do with it. despite this, i'm wary of making twitter my primary social media- it already kind of is, and i don't really think that's the right direction for me, since i think i'm at my best writing long form posts.
another thing i've realized is that i still really like how my blog looks on desktop- maybe i'll try to reduce my tumblr use on mobile and that'll feel better for me? i might like. create a new account on mobile and use this one only on desktop or something.
i do know that i want to try and write more long form content, maybe try my hand at a more journalistic writing style? i think this year i've found myself engaging with lots of aspects of kpop/music as less of a stan and more of a critic? i'm not sure if this is good or bad but this year i'd like to do more writing for myself and this seems like as good a topic as any. i'm not sure if i want that to be on this blog or elsewhere. probably elsewhere. (if at all)
so what does this mean? probably nothing, but i kind of just wanted to record my thoughts.

2022 music recap (3/3?): playlists that defined my year
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(bonus points if you can spot the music videos each background image is from 😗)
i make playlists for a maximum audience of one tbh but i thought i'd share anyways :)
the first two playlists are probably my favorites tbh. i rarely listen to music on shuffle, i just have hundreds (literally) of tiny playlists like these that i often return to. in a sense they kind of approximate albums? idk it makes sense to me.
not to directly contradict myself but 22.1119 & 22.0308 (yes this is how i name playlists) are two of the rare times i will put a playlist on shuffle. theyre just a vibe idk.
22.1010 is actually an approximation of a few different playlists- i knew i wanted cooing, xiso, karencici, and youha on a playlist and i went through like 4 or 5 iterations of the same playlist made on different days lmfao. they connect in my head what can i say.
and i guess this wraps up my 2022 music recap! i have a few more thoughts that i hope i can get around to writing down but we'll see :)
up next?
wishes for 2024

2022 music recap! (1/3?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
soloists:
after a tough battle, i finally settled on my top three soloists of 2022! this was such a great year for female solo artists in all markets. lexie liu and bibi undoubtedly played a huge role in my year, gaining 255 scrobbles and 287 scrobbles from me, respectively. what pushed lexie liu over the edge to claim the #1 spot is the uniqueness of her third studio album "the happy star," which just released this month! fun fact: lexie liu is the only artist to maintain a song in my top 10 for the past four years! it was time to admit that she's one of my favorite artists overall. i highly recommend most of the happy star (i don't personally care for gaia or shanti) but especially magician, fortuna, 3.14159, and ganma.
bibi is an interesting case- the songs of hers i listened to most, pado and eat my love (2021), are not her most popular (or even her core style). but there's something about them that scream 4.5 gen. if they were released by any rookie gg right now i'm sure they'd be hits. bibi also released an album this year, which i really liked overall! i would recommend the intro (yes, the intro), witch hunt, and motospeed 24. i have to admit that i'm not really a stan, but bibi really impressed me this year!
i have less to say about youha's satellite (currently my 9th most listened song with 48 scrobbles), despite loving it a lot. i just want a girl group to do this style. i want youha to make this her main style. it's just too good- good enough to elevate her to 3rd on my soloists list. "love you more," is her first mini and she killed it, so i'm looking forward to a bright 2023 :)
note: honorable mentions are not in any particular order, i love them all but i need to move on to the other categories lmfao
male releases:
it was a tough year for male artists in my opinion. my only bright spot was my top 3.
xiso/senji and alpha are new discoveries for me! i don't have much to say about them somehow but i would highly recommend you give them a listen! seni oilai (my 4th most listened song with 54 scrobbles) is the first song in kazakh that i've ever heard! the bass is everything to me- it's like this song was designed to take over my brain lmfao. xiso & senji are what i would call part of the onlyoneof extended cinematic universe. they work together a lot, along with haeil (and iiso iirc) and are doing some really cool stuff right on the edge of kpop and krnb.
kb actually held the #1 artist slot in my library with 219 streams for several months before being overtaken by bibi and lexie liu. he still, however, holds the #1 song spot with be free. oddly enough, i don't even think be free is necessarily "the best" of onlyoneof's solo project (that honor goes to junji's be mine) or the best conceptual execution (that would be yoojung's begin). but it is the one that scratched my brain just right. this project is so good y'all TT
gg releases:
i didn't call this one female releases because the soloists would overwhelm the list lmfao. that said, 2022 was definitely a gg year in kpop! oddly enough, despite primarily being a gg stan i actually don't stan any of the monster rookies that debuted this cycle? and i would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite honestly (i might write a whole post about 4th gen later, we'll see). that said, love dive was undoubtedly my gg soty. i don't have scrobble info for it as i primarily listened to it a ton before i got a tracking app, but according to apply music it was my number one song this year. i'd guess that the real rank is probably between 6 and 13.
lesserafim's the great mermaid isn't for everyone but it was certainly for me! another one that i listened to earlier in the year, so apple music has it at #14. i just think it's really unique and i would lovee to see a performance of it. lsf has a bright future and i'm excited to see where they go from here. (i'm also proud of them for not releasing singles lmfao!)
tripleS...i have so much to say about them that i've circled back around to having nothing to say. their first temporary subunit's mini album, access, was really solid in my opinion, but i know it's not for everyone. regardless, i think that the positive reaction to generation was 100% warranted. it's so fun!! i'll have more to say about them in a later post but yeah. my girls. i'm so excited for ot10 debut early next year!
with how much i loved purplekiss' pretty psycho, it's a bit evil for it to now not be in my top 3. i still think it's a great song (my #7 on apple music) but it's aged a lot more than the other songs on the list, including others on the same album. it's still great though, i just wish it had better choreo and was a title.

very surprised that people haven't been enjoying talk that talk...i've seen criticism that it sounds like forever 21 music and while i can't say i disagree it's still cute! plus i think they're finally on the way to striking just the right balance between mature and cute/fun, which, imo, has been a struggle since they started their mature era

i have nothing better to do rn sooo... putting my top albums of 2022 playlist on shuffle and providing random assorted commentary
yes, putting them on shuffle kinda defeats the purpose but we move
albums on the list (in order of release/ when they were added):
fromis_9 - midnight guest
mirae - marvelous (pending review lmfao)
onlyoneof - instinct part 2
yena - smiley
apink - horn
stayc - young-luv.com (pending review)
billie - the collective soul and unconscious: chapter one
purplekiss - memeM
lesserafim - fearless
woodz - colorful trauma
class:y - class is over / lives across (they're basically one album idk)
jo1 - kizuna (was not on the playlist at the time of writing and as i was adding them i realized that while i enjoy a bunch of the songs i don't actually have much to say so...enjoy the like ~3 songs i included from this album lmfao) (pending review #3)
tl;dr (the songs i chose to link in order of appearance):
onlyoneof - suit dance
woodz - hijack
class:y - divin into you
purplekiss - oh my gosh
purplekiss - pretty psycho
apink - nothing
woodz - hope to be like you
lesserafim - the great mermaid
class:y - tell me one more time
jo1 - move the soul (from the first take)
purki - cursor || absolutely LOVE swan's voice. i don't follow the group but i always think that when i hear their music
recently read a tweet talking about how onlyoneof really doesn't have filler members, which is why jisung leaving resulted in a pretty drastic change in their style. i really think that's true, but this song also feels like them harnessing their old style a bit and i'm really glad they did.
nayeon - no problem || i really like this dua lipa? kinda vibe she's giving here. (also this album dropped not an hour ago and it's already on this playlist?? and im not even a once?? her power.)
*yena - pretty boys || i forgot how good this song is woww. they really did a great job selecting songs for this album, i'm so excited to see what she comes out with next. also this is definitely a contender for best mini of the year :)
mirae - final cut || definitely one of their best. it's great to witness their bsides improving since their debut.
fromis - escape room || this song just makes so much sense to me. it's at once not a style they've done before but it suits them and fits the logical progression of their sound so much? it feels like it was made for them and their discography
jo1 - walk it like i talk it || not bad at all but their take on noise music kinda gives omega x? it's not my preferred sound from them
billlie - moon palace || this song is cute! it's definitely interesting, but my criticism of the album is that it's a but slow overall. but this track supports the overall tone of the album so well, so i can't fault it too much.
purki - joah
nayeon - happy birthday to you || i enjoyed it first listen but i think im enjoying it even more second listen? the bgm is calm but interesting, it was a good addition to the album without being the same exact style as any other song.
fromis - 0g || their lil foray into city pop i love it! reminds me that i have to listen to yukika's new single lol
nayeon - pop! || sounds very much like a twice song to me, it's good but i cant decide how i feel about that?
the ultimate fakeout lmfao. he made everyone think that he was releasing a punk rock album and then the only hard "punk" song on this album is this one that actually takes more inspiration from hiphop/trap to me? like yeah there's the gritty guitar and the vocals in the chorus but it's definitely not punk rock/pop punk. still great tho lmfao
jo1 - touch! || cute but strange? it's full8loom but...jpopified. love the bass
please give my girls a chance, they need to fund a better album cover artist TT in all seriousness I think this could've at least gotten them a little attention if it was a promoted bside. it fits them all so well (on that note - they really did a much better job than expected coming up with a concept and sound that fits the members' age range). the shouted lines also kind of remind me of prikil's amazing girls. also #giveHyungseoandYukinomorelines2k22
apink - free & love || their brave girls slay
yena - smiley || giving myself a point for predicting kpop's pop punk phase, i don't really think it reached its full potential (seems like summer has brought out house music as the style of choice), but i still saw it coming! i really love this song/album as a really nice blend of bright kpop and pop punk (heavy on the pop). as i said before, her team really did a great job, i hope she sticks with this sound for a little bit.
fromis - hush hush || a lot more fun than i remembered? i like it lol, not sure why i thought it was the ballad?
nayeon - candyfloss || i swear i can hear momo's voice it's driving me a bit crazy
onlyoneof - gaslighting || they're sick for this concept, they pull it off, this song is definitely one of their best post-lovegate (maybe even in general) BUT i am sick of the fucked of relationship concept tbh
mirae - marvelous || justice for lien's lines (yes im aware he has the most. he should have more.) (im never gonna make a standalone post about him but i need his male taeyeonification. normanification. his voice would sound so good in like,,,a soulful pop kind of song? im thinking invu & fair but not exactly. and there are no lien stans to talk about this with rip lol.)
apink - my oh my || bodyrolling with feeling
lesserafim - fearless || i don't know that i think this song is *great* but it's certainly a statement, i like how conceptually strong everything is ( the relationship between the song, their name, and their album cover? it's very cohesive). if you've seen chuang i kind of think of this song as a final chuang song (like the song the final group performs immediately after their names are called with tear tracks still on their faces lmfao). but,,,an ideal final chuang song? it's pretty simple to sing and dance and it would make such a cool statement for a final gg. too bad chuang is dead hahahahahahhfnkjsdbfjbjfaju
yena - before anyone else
the ideal slow song because it's still fun! i also respect their commitment to saying "purple on the top" on every album
lesserafim - sour grapes
yena - vacay || tbh this little slow/calm song section that shuffle has given me is eating
class:y - feelin so good || this song is cutee, just wish hyungseo had more lines (although the line she repeats 80 times is very pretty)
i feel so strongly about this song that i've circled back around to having nothing to say TT. it's amazing, it deserved better choreo, and it should've been a halloween comeback. this song could stand alone as a single.
jo1 - love & hate || when i did my discography listen on twt i described it as onlyoneof x tan...not quite the perfect description overall but it's very accurate for the chorus. favorite on the album not including stuff that was carried over from the prev mini
stayc - butterfly || listening to this with new ears lmfao. i was trying to think of why it suddenly started reminded me of black ppl music (like in the chorus and general beat) and then i realized that it kinda sounds like the internet's come over? idk, im enjoying it
*class:y - shut down || one of the best recent debuts idc what anyone says! my daughters fr (except hyungseo, we're besties)
billlie - gingamingayo || cute and experimental, my only wish is that the album kept this vibe. also billlie has so many servers i love it
*purki - hate me, hurt me, love me || feels like it should be on an album with lovesick girls
nayeon - love countdown || probably one of my favorites, if not my favorite on the album. also these wonstein industry plant jokes are hilarious (but for real though who is he and why is he getting all these big 3 collabs lmfao. his part is really good i just dont understand the connection)
jo1 - real || tbh they have so many songs in this style that they all kind of blur? but outside of the context of their discography i do like it. unrelated but i do find the sections a little awkward
stayc - i want u baby || what i'll say about this album - the bsides are conceptually very clear and suit the group's image well. but as a person who doesn't love slow songs i'm kind of on the fence about the album. but in terms of cohesion, and once again, conceptual clarity, stayc is definitely one of the best groups out there. still figuring out if they're for me though (i like their tts a lot though!)
mirae - seven pages || cute but not great?
class:y - classy || in all honesty i'm probably giving this song a pass because i want to support them lmfao. but i do actually like it too! but i mightve turned it off early if i wasn't already a fan. also, it goes almost without saying but this is even more of a chuang ending song than fearless, it's giving "she's a bonbon" and "we are into1" lmfao tencent please put the into1 song on apple music please please pleaseeee
jo1 - algorithm || peak noise music from them minus "cheese on the trap c- c- cheese on the trap" like ??? shut up??? TT
*yena - lxxk 2 u || probably my most listened song on the album, the pop punk vibes are even clearer here, i love it
apink - holy moly || you know what...this album is kinda like elegant brave girls? a lil class:y classy retro throwback party and im very into it
billlie - a sign ~ anonymous || another cute, chill/slow song. this is a late realization but i guess that's the other thing ggs are into this year. also im holding myself back from mentioning gwsn lmfao
fromis - DM || another song i listen to a lot. i've said this already but this is truly the perfect transitional song from their fun concept to a mature upbeat concept...wait...will their music sound like this apink album in a few years? i'd be okay with that actually. also hayoung dozen to designated whistle note-er transformation is something that can be so personal,,,
apink - single rider || don't remember where i ranked this one when i did my album listen but i'm quite enjoying it
jo1 - dreaming night || no idea what this song is actually about but it sounds happy/yearning? idk more bgs need to get on this
stayc - young luv || fits their concept incredibly well. i don't have anything new to say but i do enjoy this song
best song on the album, the only song that stands next to her is red carpet and everyone agrees, mwah
surprisingly my favorite on the album? it isnt really like me to like such a slow song but i got this one first listen for some reason, no idea why. that gif of the green man...frog...cryptid...thing dancing is what plays in my head when i listen to it, no idea why but i'm vibing
class:y - surprise || it doesn't sound current to me, but it's grown on me A TON. but it still confuses my brain. why did they choose this as a prerelease song. (also i like the final group but hyunhee and yunseo must be recognized for their service in the original version. also i miss yooyeon but the group's concept would probably be different if she made the lineup. that might've been better though since she had so many fans...)
stayc - 247 || im enjoying this a lot more than i think i did initially lmfao?
woodz - i hate you || as said previously: fakeout of the century, but i respect it! makes perfect sense for the korean market, i only wish it had gotten more promo!
purki - intro: illusion || i love a good intro, what can i say? good intros and interludes can really elevate an album for me (as long as they're not there to fluff a "full")
onlyoneof - ultimate bliss || glad they left the noise behind for these bsides, i was missing melodic onlyoneof. i appreciate how onlyoneof can do really interesting and complex slow songs
billlie - believe || fully believe that they decided their fan name would be bellieve or whatever it is because they already had this song in the drafts. i also really love tsuki's voice in this song (and i think sua sings part of the chorus? i love her singing voice so much, siyoon too)
mirae - amazing || with mirae songs, the raw talent of their members (mainly LIEN, siyoung, JUNHYUK, and khael) really saves their music for me. that said i do actually like this song but those four...their voices can save a lot for me lmfao
one of my favorite songs of the year and it makes me sick that it came from hybe lmfao.
apink - dilemma || actually not my favorite from them. i love the verses but not the chorus? also, just noticed that this uses the same sample as mamadol's wooah hip? it kinda took me off guard lol
onlyoneof - skinz || stockholmed myself into thinking i kinda enjoy this song. i caught myself kinda dancing to it and was disturbed
*lesserafim - blue flame || another win for yunjin lesserafim
stayc - run2u || i've said this a million and one times but. i played that twitter leak over and over and over for literally 2 hours. i was obsessed and i feel bad that the stayc girls arent getting the streams they deserve from me. but it was just too good
if they promoted this song i wouldn't have to stand outside and promote class:y on the street corners. but alas
lesserafim - the world is my oyster || kind of corny but it could make a great performance if everyone serves face
woodz - better and better || me enjoying all the slow songs on this album...it needs to be studied
nayeon - all or nothing || another possible favorite from the album, i liked it first listen. also i swear i heard mina at some parts 😭
*purki - memeM || i'm not usually a noise music girl but this really got me idk. this really was a great album wow
stayc - same same
so this is very much cheating but alas. i don't care for some of jo1's songs but something magical happens when they take their best vocalists and have them sing the whole thing live on the first take. like their vocals are just soooo good, the clarity of those first take mics really elevates...everything. it is kinda hilarious that their management said "six of you are not allowed near mics that are on" which i respect actually. sometimes idols are better seen and not heard ToT anyways it would be cheating to link it since its not even a 2022 release but junki's version of their song voice on the first take is sooooo good i love his voice so much,,,but they really did cut 10 men from the song lmfao? iconic
*apink - red carpet || needed them to promote this wayyy harder its so good????
billlie - overlap (1/1)
*mirae - juice || definitely one of their best songs, probably their best bside? actually it's this and new days i think. i should listen to this more, i forgot about it lmfao
class:y - super cool || hmmm. the chorus is a bit addictive but this song isn't great. the processing on their voices during the verses is a bit odd, but then there's way less done to chaewon's voice during the prechorus so it's a bit jarring? and they let my girl jimin (love her, girlie can SING) do a screaming high note TT like she's so good but she has had 0 training (like literally, which makes her even more impressive tbh), why didn't they help her out with that one thing...also i can't pick out hyungseo's voice at all :(
jo1 - stay || truly one of their best, a true feel good song to groove to. it fits them so well, it's f8, the bass, the beat...yeah. yeah. they do other styles well but this song definitely stands out to me
the end, i don't know if i'll ever do this again but it was fun! i think one of the things i rate on when i'm listening to an album is cohesion so it didn't really make sense for me to do it this way? but i'm glad i recorded my thoughts anyways lol♡

2022 music recap (2/3?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
concepts:
this was a good year for good concepts, and i hope it improves even more next year! onlyoneof's "be" series really held it down, with the standout in my opinion going to yoojung's begin. this sounds extremely dumb but the song and the music video are at peak conceptual, thematic, tonal, sonic and lyrical harmony. like the song and mv are explicitly about beginnings, yes, but something about the song also sounds like the start of something new. they're insane for that oml. i am once again asking everyone to watch the be series start to finish once the last installment drops on january 4th. i won't be mad if you mute beat i promise but the mv is still nice.
i feel like i've been raving about lexie liu's album, the happy star, and it's rollout too much but. please watch fortuna and magician (tw death, tw flashing though, be careful!!). i can't fully explain what i liked beyond the story, but i just think the whole thing is really well done. i especially love how the ganma mv is her cleaning up one of the sets from fortuna/magician. it could just be because i love this album dearly but i even love the 3.14159 mv thats just her walking around in interesting sets (kind of a fake one shot style). idk. it makes sense to me.
love dive is my favorite gg mv of the year! i won't spend too much more time on it but yeah. it's impeccable, and i liked the vibe of the teasers too. I hope they bring that energy again for their first album, that's the quality that i'd expect for what's shaping up to be the next huge gg.
albums:
i need to post this and run away tbh, it's to the point where i'm not even fully sure that i agree with myself. i don't have the time/energy/patience/will to go through each album one by one but i would strongly recommend all of the selected songs that i put on the righthand side :)
debuts (in order by rank):
generation was a perfect debut we love to see it! a friend and i were talking about what makes the music video unique despite containing pretty conventional themes and we decided that it felt a bit more true to the "female gaze," which was great to see. i'm so excited to see where they go :)
i don't love ador as a company (that gaslighty statement is still sooooo crazy to me) so i don't really like talking about new jeans very much despite enjoying their music. i'm not sure who paid everyone to say that hype boy is their best song when attention is right there. the girls who get it get it! very solid debut mini. i hope ador is more careful with their concept in the future- ditto seems like a good start. i will be keeping an eye out for them moving forward!
tan dududu - somehow the last hope for men??? it's toooo good even if the bsides are pretty weak. dudududu isnt really a song you listen to and get hooked in my opinion, but it's an instant classic that'll never get old (in part because it takes a lot of inspiration from more classic american (read: black) rnb sounds). this group also has an older average age, which i love to see. their most recent mini, walking on the moon, was also very good, it gives got7/full8loom to me. my two wishes for them are 1.) to define their sound better and 2.) better album art.
fifty fifty's higher was like a sleeper agent and i found myself enjoying it more than anticipated at each listen. i LOVE their main vocal's tone. i need them to never ever ever do a song like log in ever ever again.
i was so impressed with yena! i wasnt an izone stan but i watched her debut on a whim and it really got me (it didn't hurt that her concept felt like the culmination of my "kpop-punk" predictions nearly two years ago at this point). her whole album is incredibly solid, and yueha did a fantastic job figuring out a unique concept that suits her. while i wasn't a fan of smartphone, i will definitely checking out her music!
throwbacks:
i won't say much here, even though it should technically be the biggest section. pado and eat my love (2021) were two of my biggest songs this year, they actually fit right in with new jeans and fifty fifty in my opinion. this year was the year i finally opened my eyes to taemin- i've always liked him, but for a few months in there criminal and advice were on repeatt. i also love the thirsty instrumental!
wayv...what to say about wayv. i'm truly hoping for the best from them but they worry me sometimes. i don't really trust their company to continue to pour into them unfortunately. but hey, at least i still have moonwalk! moonwalk is one of my favorite bg songs of all time and it's likely to stay that way for awhile :)
up next: playlists that defined my year!
