The summer sun shined down on the boat, the leather seats hot to the touch as the sun positioned itself high in the sky. Luke squinted, pulling the bill of his cap down, giving him some kind of reprieve from the sun.
Jack and Quinn anchored the boat in the middle of the lake, both needing to cool off. They wasted no time, ripping off their shirts and diving off the boat after cutting the engine.
Luke glanced at you, you had Luke’s damp shirt over your head, trying to escape from the sun under the small awning of the boat. “Reapply sunscreen before you jump into that water Luke,” you reminded him.
“Come swimming with me?” he almost pleaded, leaning over and carefully lifting the shirt that was atop your head. He wore a goofy smile on his face, one you couldn't say no to. Your skin was burning, and you were sweating; you should probably cool off.
Within minutes, Luke and you had reapplied sunscreen, Luke still shivering at the touch of your delicate fingers on his back. Your boyfriend dove off the boat, joining his brothers. You made your way into the water as well, swimming around and feeling nice after cooling off.
The sounds of splashing beside you told you that the boys were playing rough again. “Luke you’re going to drown Jack,” you mumbled before dipping your whole head underwater to cool off your body temperature. You felt like you were always looking out for Luke, like a parent. But as Luke would say, you weren’t his parent, just his extremely attractive partner who was just the right amount of bossy.
For a little bit, you felt fine, swimming around, clinging to Luke as he swam around the water with your arms around his shoulders. A throbbing pain came to your head. It could have been from the sun or the lack of water you had drank. “Can you take me back to the boat?” you questioned, needing to get out of the water before your headache got worse.
Quinn chirped you as you got onto the boat and out of the water, the eldest Hughes boy decided you had barely enjoyed the coolness of the lake. Luke swam next to the ladder until you got safely on the boat. “You okay?”
The concern in Luke’s voice made your heart flutter. “Just a headache.”
“Drink some water and eat some of the fruit Mom packed.”
You were thankful for Ellen Hughes, she was like a second mother to you at this point. Which was good, considering you were dating her youngest son. You sipped on the water bottle while slowly eating apple slices. Five minutes after exiting the water, your headache hadn’t subsided one bit, in fact it was getting worse.
The sound of water splashing a bit and the slight movement of the boat told you that someone was getting out of the water and onto the boat. Luke whisked his shirt away from the hot leather seat, leaning over the side of the boat and dipping the shirt in the water. He squeezed the extra water out before coming over to you. “Here, put my shirt on your head. Keep yourself cool.”
You graciously took that wet shirt, the cool lake water making it all a little. “Do you want to go home?” he questioned, searching around in one of the bags containing pain relief. “No, you boys wanted to wakeboard for a bit, I can manage.”
Luke felt bad that you were battling a headache on the boat. A sound of triumph left his mouth when he finally found the bottle of pain relief his mom always packed for them. “Do you want some medicine? It will help the headache.”
Nodding, Luke handed over the medicine which you graciously took. Quinn and Jack climbed back onto the boat soon after. Luke sat behind you, you sat between his legs, and both of you had your legs sprawled out on the seats in front of you while you leaned back on his bare chest, his slightly wet bathing suit shorts giving you goosebumps. Quinn drove the boat. “You need to reapply sunscreen,” Luke reminded as the boat came to another stop as Jack got the wakeboard out.
Your boyfriend gently applied more sunscreen to your body to minimize any chance of sunburn. You weren’t used to him taking care of you like this. “Wanna take a turn?” Jack offered the wakeboard and life jacket to you. “No thanks Jack, (Y/N) has a headache," Luke answered for you.
Jack frowned. “We can go back to the dock, it’s really not a problem.”
“No, no, no! I’m okay, probably just dehydrated. Luke is taking care of me.”
The constant movement and sounds of water just made the headache worse as Quinn and Jack took turns on the wakeboard. You could have cried of joy when the dock to the house came into view. Your body was tired and drained from the hours in the sun and your head still hurting.
“Go up and shower first,” Quinn told you with a smile as Luke wrapped an arm around you to walk with you. Luke got you to his room, letting you pick out a pair of his boxers to use as shorts and a shirt of his. He waited until you got into the shower before going to help his brothers with cleaning the boat up.
You were barely awake on Luke’s bed when he returned with some more water. He told you to drink up and eat some of the snacks he brought up as well before going to shower himself. He didn’t take long, returning to his bedroom, hair dripping wet.
Your own hair was still wet and unbrushed as Luke climbed into the bed next to you. His fingers began massaging your head gently, easing some of the headache pain. “You feeling better?” he questioned. You simply nodded, letting sleep take over your tired body.

Lake House Memories
I am currently at Luke’s family lake house for 10 days. It has been a month since I have seen Luke in person so I was really looking forward to coming. The Therapy is the Thing
A year ago this month, I was out wakeboarding with friends in Long Island when I took a spill. When I went down, I was racing out on a wide arc almost ahead of the boat pulling me, doing at least 50mph. The board's edge caught the water, and when I went down, my left arm flew above my head in a way I'd never felt before. Never in 45 years of taking nasty spills. It flew above my head with zero resistance, as if nothing was attached.
The pain set in immediately and lasted for weeks. Then months. Definitely something torn in there. I could barely move it above my head, and I was too weak to do my usual exercises or yoga. Pulling a shirt on was painful. But it wasn't scary. And I knew what to do. I'd been here before.
I tore my right rotator cuff when I was in my late 20s. A week of sports abuse and a terrible fall right on my shoulder (which probably shoved a bone through the muscle) resulted in a 100% tear of one of my four shoulder muscles. This was confirmed years later with an MRI, when the pain became unbearable. I basically just lived with a bum shoulder for over a decade. I could no longer throw footballs or baseballs with friends. I had to play frisbee left handed. I figured it would always be that way.
When I was sailing through New England in my 40s, the pain got so bad I couldn't lift my arm at all. Putting on deodorant entailed placing my right hand flat on a table, taking a big step away from the table to open my armpit, rolling on deodorant, taking a step back.
Putting on a shirt looked like a Harry Houdini routine in reverse.
I went to see a doctor and an MRI confirmed that one of the four muscles was missing. Retracted up into my shoulder. They could go in, pull it down, cut a notch in a bone, and screw it into the bone. I would have to immobilize it for 6-8 weeks and then do 4-6 months of physical therapy. And maybe I'd get 90% of my strength back.
We scheduled the surgery. I sailed north with one arm.
On a wharf one day, I met a newlywed couple and made small talk. The bride was a physical therapist. I mentioned that I'd just gone to meet my new PT and that I was having surgery soon, which was going to put a half-year pause on my circumnavigation.
"The therapy is the thing," she told me. "Not the surgery."
I asked more, and she explained that the surgery didn't do much. The muscle would tear right out of the screw if you relied on the surgery to fix you. It's the immobilization and the gradual strengthening of the other muscles using the bands and exercises the physical therapist would lead me through. If I wanted to, I could skip the surgery and just do the PT. I'd get the same or even better results.
This sounded insane to me. Here was a 20-something fresh out of school telling me the opposite of the best shoulder doctor in Boston, the guy who works on the Celtics' shoulders. But I wanted to believe her. And I realized something: it was free and easy to test her insane idea. The surgery was months out. I bought some bands and started the exercises my PT told me we'd be doing after the surgery.
The first round of exercises are ridiculous, that's how injured I was. Put a band around a doorknob, hold it in one hand, and step away from the door. Step back. Repeat 15 times. Rest. Do it again. Stop when you feel any pain worse than the resting pain. Now face a different direction and do it again. Repeat.
As the days went on, I was able to step further away, putting more resistance in the band. After a week, I was doing exercises where I moved my arm instead of having to carry it along with my entire body. One morning I lifted my arm away from my body to put on deodorant. A week later I was getting a shirt on and off without looking like a circus act. What the hell was happening?
It turns out the other three muscles can take over the rotation duties in the shoulder, but they have to learn from scratch. I was teaching them. Within four months of getting in a band routine, I had full strength back. No pain. I went back to throwing baseballs and playing disc golf. I got in the best shape of my life, and it didn't take surgery. All because of a chance encounter on a wharf one day.
So when I tore something in my other arm, I didn't panic. I also didn't resign myself to years of discomfort or feel like I had to give up my lifestyle. I just gave my shoulder some rest and began the band work. Once again, I got back to 100%.
The challenge, I've realized, is forcing ourselves to do the PT when we don't have the cost and pain of surgery to scare us into a routine. Which leads me to another thought: what other things in life could we improve if we had the equivalent of surgery to force our hands?
What if a doctor cut us open, put us in a sling or cast, and said the only way to get back to 100% is to write 1,500 words a day until that novel is complete?
Or the only way back to 100% is to spend an hour a day meditating?
Or the only way back to 100% is to sit down with a friend or loved one every day to have a talk that's deeper than the one before?
What if we had expensive, painful surgery, and our physical therapist said the only way to fully heal was to hug at least ten strangers a day and hold them until you felt both your bodies sag against each other?
Maybe the surgery isn't needed.
The therapy is the thing.

This ask list will be first, and then this one! Here comes Valentine's first public appearance, only about an hour after she appeared in my brain with nothing but a name.
Also, this just occurred to me right this instant, but Valentine is a member of Deadweight Company! She's a computer technician.
12. What’s their ideal vacation like?
Val wants to get away from the war and out into somewhere tropical and sandy and warm. She likes a stereotypical beach vacation. If she were American, she'd be on a plane to Florida to drink fruity drinks and read and go wakeboarding. It's what she deserves she is under a lot of stress.
12. What do they wear to sleep?
She is a sexy queen so she wears a big tee-shirt and underwear to bed. Love that for her.
21. What’s one secret of theirs that could potentially ruin a relationship they have?
Hmm this is a tough one. I haven’t really thought about her darker aspects yet, but I think she has a lot of shame. What I mean by that is I think she has a lot of things she keeps under lock and incredibly ashamed key, even if they’d be pretty innocuous to other people.
I also think she’s done some shady things working in intelligence and security, and she’s crossed a few lines that might make people see her in a different light if they knew.
Basically, I have vibes, but nothing specific yet.
21. Who is their favorite music artist?
Spoja Spat (Space Doja Cat) (I’m not sorry)
I think she generally likes club-type music, the kind of thing you hear in the background of tiktoks or at bars where they play extremely basic music (affectionate). She and I both have incredibly basic tastes lmfao
24. Do they have any phobias?
Bugs. Slimy things. Invertebrates as a group. I think she probably didn’t encounter many on Kamino, and now she spends most of her time in space, so she considers invertebrates to be things that need to stay far away from her, lest she kill them. Penchant hears her cries of invertebrate-induced anguish and comes running to save whatever unfortunate bug she’s found.
24. Are they a crier?
Nope. She’s been referred to as a “stone-faced bitch.” That was maybe a rude way of putting it, but she’s cool (verging on cold) under pressure and she keeps her emotions on a pretty strong lockdown. Most of my ocs suffer from Big Emotions because I also suffer from Big Emotions, but she’s the exception. It’s not really that she represses a lot, but she just doesn’t get as wound up about things as, say, Faie.
She cries sometimes, but she’s quiet about it. It’s usually reserved for grief or pain. She’s certainly not an angry or happy crier.

You’ll Never Walk Alone ABBA T Shirt
We lived a 3 hour drive from my grandparents so when my dad finished work on Christmas Eve we would pack everything into the You’ll Never Walk Alone ABBA T Shirt and set off for Yorkshire. No motorways back then. Green fields turned moorland until we finally went over the Pennines, Stanage or Holme Moss, and begun the final leg of our journey through soot blackened mill towns reaching my grandparents’ house at around 8pm. At about 9.30 a plethora of cousins and aunties and uncles would turn up an we would set off to go carol singing with other members of the congregation and band from their local chapel. Along the route we would be greeted with mince pies, slices of Christmas cake and chunks of cheese even the odd glass of Sherry or mulled wine for the adults. We belted out all the old traditional carols, my favourites being While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night which we sung to Cranbrook (Ilkley Moor) and also Christians Awake. We naturally sang O Come All ye Faithful but only after midnight were we allowed to sing the final verse of Yea Lord we Greet Thee. Shortly after midnight we called it a day. Many of the adults slightly ‘merry’ from a surfeit of Sherry!

All the atmosphere might have washed away by the solar wind . Even now due to solar wind 100grams(not sure of the number) of atmosphere of mars is washed away per year. So even if we now emit green house gases there they are going to be washed away and become useless. But its not happening to earth, because the solar wind cannot reach till the atmosphere , our magnetic feild stops it (yes we first need to pray for that magnetic feild looking at a compass needle).
