We Don't Talk About Alma❓❗
I hope no one's done this. Like I'm going insane with this idea. I'm serious.
Basically, after Mirabel's ceremony, after everyone had left and the family had gone to bed, she doesn't immediately go to Bruno for a vision. She kind sits in the candle room and looks at the candle. And what does she figure? It's her fault Mirabel didn't get a gift.
Now you might think she thought it was because she out pressure on the family, but that's not it. She doesn't even think about it. The candle flickered in her hands. So her logic is she must not be fit to be the candle her, she did something wrong. So when she's sure everyone's asleep, she leaves the candle in the nursery, telling a sleepy Mirabel to watch over it, and leaves. How she ends up in the walls I'm not sure. Casita probably showed her and she saw it as a chance to be with her family but not hurting the magic, so she stays in there.

Mirabel is out in charge of the candle. It was left in the nursery. Mirabel didn't really hear Alma that night, as Alma was telling her a lot of stuff, but she did hear the last part. And then that was the last anyone say of her. Literally, Mirabel was the last to see her, and then was gone. The next, Mirabel's door reappeared; she was holding the candle. This was because Alma, technically speaking, stepped down from being the candle holder, so it went to the next one in line; which was Mirabel. Of course the family was ecstatic, and another party was being planned. They hadn't even actually realized Alma was gone. Mirabel didn't reveal what she heard last night yet and everyone in the family kind of just assumed Alma knew and was around. Even though...no one...saw her???
Anyway, it isn't until townspeople start coming to Casita that someone asks "Where's Alma?". That prompted the family to search for her, on the DL of course. Mostly the adults, the kids were having too much fun playing in Mirabel's new room. When they couldn't find her, they didn't quite announce it. Once the party was over and the kids were asleep, they went looking for her all throughout Casita more throughly. Bruno was the one who finally noticed that Alma's door had gone dark. And when they went in, it was like no one had been in it for years. It was dark, dusty and there was scorch marks in certain places. The candle room looked abandoned, and the actual candle had been placed in Mirabel's room.
Kids found out later on and Mirabel's told everyone what Alma said to her the night of her birthday. Dolores couldn't even find Dolores; she said she could hear something but she wasn't entirely sure if it was her or not. Morale was made candleholder, but didn't step up to the role as leader until she was about 10. Courtesy of her parents.
Though, Antonio, afyer learning about gifts and what not, had a, very rational actually, fear that Mirabel would just disappear like Alma did. Other family sort of have a fear of that as well. Mirabel assures the family, and more importantly Antonio, that she wouldn't of course.

Also Alma's line the The Family Madrigal is changed.
"My Abuela Alma-"
"We Don't Talk About Alma!"
"...One day they she saw the candle flicker, and then she suddenly disappeared."
Tumblr media
The thing is, it was implemented not because they didn't like her, or because she was weird. It was because it made the triplets sad to talk about her. Pressured or not, that was still their mother, and they loved her, so when she just uped and disappeared, it was kind of jarring to them. So, Agustín and Félix told the kids not to talk about Abuela near them, and then the town kind of picked up on it. Kind of an unspoken rule. Antonio has no idea who she is, and Luisa, Camilo and Mirabel barely remember her. They were too young.
No one knows why she left. Dolores can’t properly hear her, and Bruno’s visions never make sense.

Do you think that I'm "We don't talk about alma" instead of bad luck like bruno they call her wicked witch? Or witch in general? "A FIVE FOOT WITC-"
Nah cause who tf do Camilo think he fooling 😭 he went up to Dolores one day and was like how tall was Abuela and Dolores lowkey snorted and was like "oh she was like 5 foot 3, she wasn't as tall as you might think."
But yeah, witch probably 😭 idk why, but it was probably some salty people in town, not really the family. Alma wasn't that bad, but she's not exactly there to stop anyone for talking so. It kinda, unfortunately, sticks.

Imagine in wdtaa, one of the triplets overheard someone calling Alma a witch, that'd be a mess. Also, since Mirabel is the candleholder, does she also act as leader of the Encanto? If so, how does she handle those responsibilities, including the whole Mariano debacle
Yeah they are not having it 😭 they hear a lot of things about Alma, and "witch" or "bruja" are not one of the acceptable ones. Expect to be banned from Julieta's stand, nearly being struck by lightning and then Bruno giving you some wack vision. They won't get physical, but they will be VERY passive aggressive, especially Julieta. It's not something you wanna be caught saying, especially around the triplets.
Mirabel does indeed act as leader. She's actually considered the new heart of the Encanto. Alma was the old one, but she is obviously not there, so Mirabel is consider the new one. New Edition. She doesn't really start taking on responsibility and tasks until she's around 10. Before that, she was kimda guided by the triplets. But they changed a lot of the rules, made it so the kida didn't have to work so much--which led to a more independent and less needy town btw. Alma is lower not ok with it, but a few years in the wall does something to you and she gets over it.
She handles them well by the time she has to though. She's pretty well liked by the villagers, and she doesn't assign a bazillion chores to her family. And since Alma left, Isabela dropped the perfect act after 2 or 3 years. She only kept it up because she thought Alma would be back and she would have to go back, but after that 3 year mark, she officially was over it and was able to do her own thing. Dolores also never was in her shadow, so she was able to get close to Mariano (with Miravel's help.)
SPEAKING OF. There's none of that marriage stuff, all that crazy kooky stuff. They were kids when Alma disappeared, so it was never really established. Señora Guzmán tried, but the idea never stuck. So Dolores was able to get closer. Mirabel was just happy to see Dolores happy, so it was fine.
Tumblr media
Also the murial in the town. Mirabel's holding the candle now. Alma is kinda shrouded and hidden behind the triplets. Not entirely blocked out, but she's standing behind them, not as relevant.

wdtaa aU: the cracks are still happening but with another type of trauma, or did they competly dissapear after alma left?
They do happen, it’s just not as manu cracks. They are still there. But it not out of the family growing distant, it’s like. Fear almost?? Fear that something something will happen to another. Fear that if they say something wrong or do something wrong, one of them will leave or disappear. Now, their biggest fear is Mirabel disappearing. Of course, they won’t directly say it, but she can tell. Them not taking and properly communicating causes cracks.

🌻Oh boy, you've done it now! You guys made me reread "Whatever it Takes", and the updates that have been done since I last read it have my mind thinking, lol. So, in that fic, Camilo masquerades as Alma often thanks to ger being locked up, yeah?
What if there's an AU, kinda a combined one with that aspect and "We Don't talk About Alma"? Alma saw the vision, blamed herself, and ran into the walls. The triplets are freaked out, and when Bruno reveals what the source was, they think to themselves "Maybe if we get the Encanto to a better state, one without her worst influences, she'll come back". So, much like your original WDTAA, they make the villagers rely on them less, treat them better, etc.
However, the siblings know how the villagers will act without Alma. They've seen says where she was sick or tired and she didn't go into the streets, and it was always stressful. So, they first pretend that she's feeling sick, then after a certain point, they occasionally have Camilo shapeshift to look like her. Most of what he does is similar to "Whatever it Takes", but without the things that he reacts well to being murder and poisoning, lol.
Also, this was the less angsty thought process, tbh, without Alma actually dying... Don't think of AUs while making red sauce, kids.
NAH CAUSE...YOUR SO REAL FOR THAT. LIKE ITS SO COOL❗❓
ANYWAY. I think this is. So rad. Homegirl dipped and suddenly everyone’s like. What now. Course Julieta takes the reins. And good for her on that tbh, at least her logic somewhat makes sense, you gotta give her that. Alma always seemed adamant on the encanto being perfect so. Putting it in a better state might get her back. Out with the old and in with the new 🤓
What it isn’t cool is how the villagers act even if she WAS sick 😭 how many times do you think Alma was sick. But she didn’t say anything and went out like nothing cause the villagers wouldn’t stop whining like babies 🤨
I LOVE THIS IDEA SO COOL <3333
The villagers when Alma starts acting weird (it’s Camilo):
