Another old article saved in a Word document, which I can only find behind a paywall now (but I linked it in case someone does have access to a subscription)
Green Day Rising Metal Mike Saunders, Bam, 28 January 1994 Popcore Ascending? Or Is That Just The First Phase Of 'The Greatest Band In America'?
'We were down in Irvine and Mike was having a pillow fight outside with his girlfriend. He was running away from her, and at the top of his stride he turned around, right into a horizontal beam five feet off the ground – Vhoom...Out cold. So that suggested the concept of ...misery.'– Billie Joe
WHERE IT all it the brick wall for me personally was 11th grade carpool. Four high school boys jammed into a VW bug, or worse, with the AM radio on for about 20 minutes en route to Hall High, Little Rock.
It was the season of the great Bubblegum Wars, that pint in time where the underground FM vs. plastic AM trench wars had reached the point of no return. Kids vs. pigs, rednecks vs. longhairs. Combat was the order of the day, even in music.
In the fall of 1968, the musical lightning rod was 'Chewy Chewy' by the Ohio Express: 'Turn it off' and 'Turn it down' were the majority opinions. I was for sure the only one going 'Turn it up!' The same routine was repeated just a few weeks later with the Archies and the 1910 Fruitgum Co. (the later with the classic top-five hit 'Indian Giver'), and it seems like ever since that point in time 'pop' has been a derogatory term. Something less than…what? 'Rock'?
What does this have to do with Green Day? Well, it’s like this: There’s this real lame tag – 'popcore' (say it once and erase it forever, pul LEEZE) that was kicking around for a while last year and was affixed to the East Bay trio’s style of music. Aw, hell, they’re just a great rock band.
If Santa came and went recently and there’s still no Green Day in your house, here’s a shopping list: 39 Smooth (Lookout!), Kerplunk (Lookout!), and Dookie (Warner Bros./Reprise). Forty-eight killer tracks by this country’s greatest band and, considering that only in the preceding 12 months did its members start to hit drinking age, possibly just the beginning of what could turn out to be an amazing career.
Proof is no farther away than the band’s new album, Dookie, its first for a major label, but proceeded by two LPs and three 7-inch EPs on Berkeley’s Lookout! Records.
Anyone who’s seen the threesome knows they can play like gangbusters; the difference between a tiny indie-label budget (try about $3000 for all 34 Lookout! Tracks combined) and a major-league endeavor is that for the first time you get proof 10 times over on tape. So you get raging guitar sounds and cracking snare rimshots that explode like the early who. Even the band’s chronic shortcoming – weedy studio vocals – has been corrected to an encouraging degree.
"Yeah," volunteers 21-year-old lead singer/guitarist Billie Joe, "for my vocals we used a Beyer microphone, which was used on some of the early Elvis Costello stuff. I’m really happy with the way it came out."
The entire album is a veritable role model for any guitar-heavy rock band. Says producer Rob Cavallo: "In the case of a raw, live-sounding record like this one, what I try to do is capture on the listener’s speakers the whole left-to-right stereo spread – what we heard in preproduction, listening to the band blast away in their practice room. The key to this, in Green Day’s case, is that they have such a focused idea as to what they sound like, and they’re great players in that style."
Specific elements of Dookie’s production style include a live rhythm guitar on every song, singletracked lead vocals only, and all vocal harmonies done by the second-stage voice, 20-year-old bassist Mike Dirnt.
Warner Bros.’ hands-off role, a characteristic of the company in the wake of its Mudhoney "creative control"-type underground signings, was crucial in shaping such a record. "Warner Bros. stayed out of the way and let us do exactly what we wanted to," says 21-year-old drummer Tre Cool. "All I can say is if you can get on Warners, you are one lucky son of a gun!"
The inclination to make a guitar-heavy record was present from the get-go. "I definitely wanted to get a bigger sound," recalls Billie Joe, "something with more meat to it." Which is achieved, in parts thanks to a borrowed vintage 1972 Marshall head hooked up to the same blue Stratocaster Billie Joe’s been battering since he was 11.
The wall of guitar sound was achieved with a live track and just one more rhythm guitar dropped in. "We had experimented a bit on previous records, stacking guitar tracks to try to get a thicker sound," recalls Billie Joe. "But this time with just the two rhythm guitars; we got a better distorted sound."
Like any other trademark-sound band, it’s the deviations on the record that are most interesting. We’ve got three here: 'Pulling Teeth,' 'When I Come Around,' and the album’s first single, 'Longview,' 'Pulling Teeth' leaps out of the album like a K-Tel cut buried in a techno set; it’s the tune Dave Edmunds never had to break his career Stateside. Tight harmony vocals frame a straight guitar-heavy country-rock melody with a conciseness worthy of the masters. Not one wasted word or second.
"We were down in Irvine," recalls Billie Joe of the song’s lyrical genesis, "and Mike was having a pillow fight outside with his girlfriend. He was running away from her, and at the top of this stride he turned ground – vhoom…Out cold. So that suggested the concept of…misery."
'Longview' hits a whole opposite style. It’s something you might imagine as a late’70s FM track, with a loping dumbo beat ("a rumble," suggests Dirnt) not too far off Tom Petty’s 'Breakdown', Lyrics about nothing, really-killing time, punching the cable remote, getting high. A two-chord riff to nowhere, then a basic garden-variety three-chord chorus. The trick is that the whole darn song is a hook. Simultaneously the dumbest and catchiest Van Halen guitar licks panning across the speakers.
"In a way, that song was cheap self-therapy for watching too much TV," recalls Billie Joe. "It was another case of writing about whatever mood I’m in."
Especially near to my heart (I’m from the South, y’all ) is 'When I Come Around,' an unintentional dead-on-evocation of Lynyrd Skynyrd at its top-40 hookiest. With a lazy turnaround beat like 'Sweet Home Alabama', it’s just about five degrees westward of the slightly ‘70s ballads 'Christie Road' and 'No One Knows' from the earlier Kerplunk album.
"On that one, we weren’t thinking country rock, but rather something that had a groove to it, almost like you could imagine having a martini and listening to it at the same time," explains Dirnt.
See, 80 percent of Dookie is in the trademark Green Day raging pop-punk. It’s this deviant 20 percent that makes one suspect they can pull off almost anything they want out of the trash-dump of earlier under appreciated rock styles. A mainstream audience could forge a very, very interesting alliance with this group.
Of the trademark pop-punk onslaught, averaging an airtight two minutes, 30 seconds apiece, 'Basket Case' and 'Sassafras Roots' are two of the strongest numbers. 'Basket Case' was about a friend who’s pretty loopy,' explains Billie Joe, 'but a bit about myself as well – like seeing your own trails in other people where it’s been taken to a total extreme. There are a lot more songs on this record that are about other people’s experiences, even though I might still be singing in the first person.'
The recording of Dookie went fairly fast by industry standards, the music and vocals finished last summer in three and a half weeks (at Berkeley’s Fantasy Studios), followed by an initial mix. The band then headed out on 40-date fall tour with the veteran LA punk band Bad Religion, which enabled them to come back to the project with a clean set of ears. The entire album was remixed with engineering whiz Jerry, Finn who paid special attention to the record’s amazing bottom end. At that point, the band’s 'creative input' reached its most extreme.
"We all three sat there for 10 days straight, 15 hours a day, and listened to every minute of the remixing sessions," recalls Tre Cool. Which is just short of four working-Joe (like me) work weeks without a day off.
Dookie is one of the rawest melodically oriented rock records to show up on a major label in the last zillion years. Usually when bands go from an indie to a major label, the result is a slicker product.
"When I listen to bad rock music occasionally, I just wind up going, ‘What the hell were these guys thinking of?" agrees Billie Joe.
I speculate that there have now been entire generations’ worth of bad drum sounds committed to record. "Huge room sounds on the drum with shitloads of reverb," responds Dirnit. "Flanged drum rolls," adds Billie Joe.
My favorite, rolls across the chromatic-tuned rototoms, comes in a close second.
While most bands with almost 50 tracks into their recording career hit the point of labored songwriting (that old saw about a band’s first album being its best), that hasn’t been the case with Green Day. "Actually, I think I was more comfortable with my songwriting on this record than I ever was before," insists Billie Joe. "I had a real good handle on what kind of melodies and hooks I wanted to come up with. Didn’t rush myself, just let them come out naturally. It was the previous time out, on the songs on Kerplunk, that I was consciously trying to outdo my previous songs."
The variation from Green Day’s uptempo style, now comprising a good one-quarter of the band’s most recent two albums, will continue. "We definitely are going to continue to expand the scope of our material; we don’t want to get into a rut where we rewrite Kerplunk or Dockie over again," explains Billie Joe. "There’s a lot of musical tastes that run through this band."
I did my homework on the band’s "song-about-girls" label (a tag, Dirnt complains, 'we got caught up in') going back to January 1992’s Kerplunk and assigning topics to each song. The tally was girls, four; mortality/meaning of life, three; neurosis/insanity, one; one novelty song; and alienation, motivation, and coming of age, one apiece. Dookie is more of the same, with topics ranging all over the map, the median perhaps being the pissed-off frame of mind of 'Chump' and 'F.O.D.' The girl-songs ratio is down around 30 percent.
The "girl-songs" tag must have sprung from what was the band’s classic 1990 debut, 39 Smooth, written and sung by Billie Joe and Dirnt at the ripe old ages of 17 and 16. A good 70 percent of the album’s songs related to the opposite sex, with the lead off track, 'At the Library', ranking as perhaps the best song ever written by a high-schooler.
One facet of a Green Day performance that’s impossible to capture on paper is the continuous bantering and riposting between the band and the crowd, much of it hysterical.
"It’s all part of making our audience feel like they’re at home, communicating on an eye-label basis," offers Billie Joe.
"See, before a show we’re usually making fun of each other – making a mess by playing baseball with apples or whatever, meeting new people who are funny and have jokes we haven’t heard – so we’re totally stoked by the time we get onstage," elaborates Tre.
It’s safe to say that after two trips to Europe, half a dozen ('at least') full American tours, and over four years of nonstop gigging, performance anxiety does not figure into this band’s equation. "We never have a list, we just make it up as we go," explains Tre.
I offer my theory that no matter how many fans a band has, there are five times as many people who think they stink, and 10 times as many who don’t care.
"I would see it as three different sections: the people who really like you, the people who really hate you, and the vast majority who are totally oblivious," muses Billie Joe.
The vast size of the record industry contributes to making yesterday’s barely gold act today’s 'Who?' (think Britny Fox, Vixen, and a half-dozen gold Loverboy albums). Indeed, if everyone who ever made fun of Motley Crue videos were assembled in one place, we would surely fill the Oakland Coliseum.
Speaking of videos, the world doesn’t faze our subjects – not yet anyway. "We’ve never done a video. They’ve got us scheduled to do one, so for now we think videos are cool," laughs Tre.
"We’re probably shooting the video in our house," adds Billie Joe, the "house" being what appears to be a subterranean Berkeley abode, complete with a tiny band-practice room; it’s not squalid, it’s absolutely slacker). "So…we figure our video concept will be kind of ‘Looks That Kill’ meets ‘Hot for Teachers’ meets 'Rock You Like a Hurricane'," quips Dirnt.
Given the absolutely superb quality of the band’s Warner Bros. debut, the only mystery is that a major label bidding war on Green Day took so long to materialize.
"Warner Bros. was the label initially considering the band," recounts band co-manager Jeff Saltzman. "But it was when Geffen and Sony/CBS jumped in with serious interest that Warners got serious about picking up the band."
Green Day never would have gotten so much done so fast, however, without the astute ears of Lookout! Records’ president and perpetual talent scout, Larry Livermore, who sent the band into the studio two months after first seeing the trio to record an EP called 1000 Hours, which was followed by the 39 Smooth album, which was recorded at the end of 1989 for less than $500.
"I knew Al Sobrante (Green Day’s drummer through mid-1990) from Isocracy, so I knew about his new band, Sweet Children [renamed Green Day six months later]," recalls Livermore. "My band, the Lookouts, were playing a house party up in Mendocino County, February 1989, so I invited Al’s band up to play also. I was so impressed with the band and their attitude, playing just in front of 15 people, that I hooked up with them immediately to record for Lookout! I never had any doubt about their potential, musically. I thought they were great the first time I saw them."

Musicals Ranked On What Percent of the Cast Album is On My Spotify Top 100
So fun fact about me: I pretty much only listen to musicals. And as a result, my entire Spotify Top 100 is musicals. I also tend to listen to musicals on repeat, so there are only 13 shows on this list. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to see how much of each show was on my playlist, so I compared the number of songs from each show on the list and compared it against the number of songs on the cast albums, then I found the percent. Here’s the results.
13. Matilda (1/26, 4%)
I’m kind of shocked that there aren’t more Matilda songs on this playlist, considering that I would have been in it in April. And yet, only one song ended up on my playlist.
12. Something Rotten (1/18, 6%)
I love Something Rotten a lot, but I don’t listen to it all that often. I actually have a poster signed by the touring cast hanging up in my room at my mom’s house.
11. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (1/14, 7%)
This is one that people on Tumblr might not have heard of as much. It’s an absolutely fantastic show that’s staged as a concert and it’s incredible and I love it. Shockingly, my favorite song from this show was not on this playlist.
10. Frankenstein (2/26, 8%)
I think most people don’t know that there’s a Frankenstein musical. This one is shockingly accurate to the book, which I loved. Something you may not know about me is that I really love the book, it’s just so interesting. This musical even included the letters, which was super cool to see.
9. Groundhog Day (2/19, 21%)
Groundhog Day is one of my favorite shows that ended too soon. It closed on Broadway too early, and then the national tour was cancelled. Even without the pandemic, I don’t think you’d be able to find a production of Groundhog Day that you could watch live.
8. The Lightning Thief (5/24, 21%)
I actually only listened to this for the first time a few months ago, but I think Spotify might put more weight on the later months. I’m pretty surprised that so many songs ended up on here, considering I only listened to the full album a few times.
7. Billy Elliot (4/15, 27%)
I watched the proshot of this back in April or May, and I did not expect to like it as much as I did. When I saw Angry Dance I knew that I had to see this in person at some point. Obviously, I haven’t gotten a chance to see it yet, but hopefully one day I can. Anyway, every time I listen to Once We Were Kings I tear up a bit.
6. Trail to Oregon (5/17, 29%)
And here’s Starkid everybody! I haven’t actually listen to TtO in awhile, but for a while I would listen to it as I fell asleep. I didn’t listen to the full soundtrack during that time, I actually made a playlist with only the songs that I enjoyed listening to.
5. Starship (4/9, 44%)
Okay, so maybe this show is so high on the list because there’s only nine songs, but I still really like this show. I wish there was sheet music for it because I’d love to learn how to sing Life or Status Quo.
4. Apocalyptour (13/22, 59%)
Okay, so technically not a musical. But, it is entirely composed of musical songs, so I say that it counts. I really like listening to the medleys on this album, and it’s fun to hear some different people sing Starkid songs.
3. Hadestown (28/40, 70%)
Yeah. Over 25% of the playlist was Hadestown. All five of my top songs were from Hadestown. My five top artists were all people from Hadestown. According to Spotify I listened to this for a total of 933 minutes. No, I don’t know how I did that. I guess I listened to it on repeat a lot.
2. Tuck Everlasting (18/24, 75%)
Another show that closed far too soon. It’s so good, and I love it, and it’s extremely underrated and underappreciated. I love the album so much. I listen to Time and I cry. I listen to Time Quartet and I cry. I listen to The Wheel and I cry.
1. Moulin Rouge (16/19, 84%)
So I know this one can be kind of controversial because some people thought that it got too modern when they put it on stage. I, however, love it. Shut Up and Raise Your Glass slaps. Crazy Rolling also slaps. I love Come What May so much. Plus, Karen Olivo is Satine, and she’s my favorite actress, so I was doomed to fall in love with this show.
So I also wanted to share exactly what songs are on the playlist, so I’m putting it under the cut. Get ready for a lot of Hadestown. For everyone who doesn’t know Starkid, I apologize for the titles of the songs in Apocalyptour. I did not name them.

SnK Chapter 121 Results

The chapter 121 poll closed with 1,812 responses. Thank you to everyone for participating!
  RATE THE CHAPTER 1,644 Responses
Tumblr media
Welp, it’s official. Chapter 121, the 10th anniversary chapter of Attack on Titan, was the highest rated chapter this year. In fact, in the last two years, the only chapter that scored higher was 112. Bravo, Isayama!
Attack on Titan can’t get any crazier after THAT chapter!” I say for the fourth month in a row, like a fool.
Jesus Christ Im so happy I was born at the time aot was created
Eren is *chef’s kiss* so perfect and well written and scary and amazing. The best character of anything I’ve ever watched or read, I’ll love him for a very long time.
I had to physically lie down, I was that confused.
It was perfect. From the reveal of Eren to Zekes meeting with Grisha. This chapter changed our whole view not just on the characters, but the whole story itself. Simply amazing.
I honestly think this was the most mind blowing chapter since the Basement reveal chapter. To think Future Eren was the one who convinced Grisha at the last second to massacre the Reiss family blew my mind!
This was an amazing chapter. Regardless of what you think of Eren, he has to be one of the most well developed characters in all of manga. I like the direction of the story and can't wait to see what Isayama has in store for our beloved characters.
This chapter solidifies SnK as manga of the decade.
I'm not sure if Isayama planned this from day n°1, but him saying the story is about surpassing the father takes up a whole new meaning: how can your father enslave you when you enslave him yourself?
The next big twist? “Oh-ho, onii-chan, I was the Founder Ymir all along!”
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT? 1,684 Responses
Tumblr media
There were a LOT of moments in this chapter, and a lot of people had a lot of different favorites. The one that seems to stand out the most was the reveal of the Attack Titan’s ability, beating almost every other answer by double digits. Other favorites include Eren reliving the famous childhood scene with Mikasa, the significance of the royal kiss, and Eren breaking free of the PATHS chains. Interestingly, “You haven’t gotten to the part where I eat our old man yet,” and Grisha telling Zeke to stop Eren had a nearly identical number of responses, with a difference of only 2.
I'd choose not have any time travel shenanigans in this franchise if I was asked for an opinion beforehand, but it has been executed really well.
The real question is: could Zeke or Grisha feel the hug?
i want to hug mikasa
WHAT IS “THE SIGHT” (FAN TRANSLATION "THE SCENERY" ) THAT EREN SEES FONDLY? 1,646 Responses
Tumblr media
Oof. The majority (37.2%) believe “the sight” Eren sees fondly is the trampled burning earth, post -rumbling. “His friends living freely”(16.2%)  was the second option followed by “The child from the final panel” (13.5%) in third.
"Something beyond that hell..."
Eren saw his own death. His death is somehow going to be the set up for a peaceful future. That’s why Grisha was so upset. His *actual* death is going to be gruesome af. Definitely more gruesome than getting his head blown awff.
I do not understand Eren at all, so I won't even try to give an answer to this
I think it is possibly a ruse since I am still thinking he has some plan concerning Founder Ymir. I actually still believe VERY strongly that Eren is obviously aiming a future where he can save many. But... For the sake of answering this question shortly: not too sure atm on the ‘fixed’ sight, but I think it’s possible he is seeing a ‘way’ for the Titan curse to finally end. I think every shifter, including Armin, will die still tbh. :P
The rumbling scene we saw in chapter 106, when Eren was smiling
The Walls destroyed and the colossus titans inside freed and marching, but it doesn't necessarly end with world scale rumbling.
I know it may not be moral, and maybe it's not even going to happen, but i REALLY hope "that sight" is the world-scale rumbling actually happening.
Grisha knew about the rumbling, and I don't think that happening nearly as horrified as he looked. My first theory was Eren was going to end the ability of Eldians being able to transform into titans, now I believe he wants the rest of the world to become titans.
The fact of being able to tell to the child of the latest panel "You're free now", we all know that freedom is Eren's weak spot
he saw a jo jo reference
HOW DO YOU VIEW GRISHA’S UNWILLINGNESS TO KILL CHILDREN? 1,673 Responses
Tumblr media
SnK is relatively (in?)famous for its "gray morality" takes. It has been pretty consistent that you probably shouldn't kill children though, and Grisha seems to agree. 41% of you guys admire him for at least temporarily rethinking his plan to kill the Reiss children. 52.5% of you don’t fault him for hesitating, but understand that it was ultimately necessary to achieve the end goal, and 6.5% of you think it was weak given the circumstances.
Seeing Grisha how he talks about not being able to kill kids since he's a doctor and then seeing said kids cheering on their sis to kill him was :((((
Grisha has moved from "ugh, I despise him" to "guess he's slightly better than Rod Reiss?"
WE HAVEN’T SEEN EREN RECEIVE ANY FUTURE MEMORIES, AND HE'S VERY CERTAIN THAT HE'S NEVER BEEN CONTROLLED BY ANYONE ELSE. DOES THIS MEAN THAT EREN IS THE LAST ATTACK TITAN? 1,668 Responses
Tumblr media
Just over 70 percent of you think that Eren is the last holder of the Attack Titan; that’s pretty cut and dry! The next largest group was ‘I don’t know’ at just over 21 percent, with most other responses negligible. It seems that most readers therefore think that, one way or another, the Attack Titan’s path ends with the Eren’s story.
Eren is the Attack Titan. Period.
He's the first and the last.
I think it's just possible that Eren is the only one who is able to have complete control over the Attack Titans abilities. It is mentioned in this chapter that the previous holders of the Attack Titan didn't have full control over it...
What if a more future attack titan manipulated Eren so that he cannot see future memories
I think it's likely, but something Kruger says prevents me from being positive. In chapter 89 "If you want to save them all; Mikasa, Armin and the others; carry out your mission to the end." This could be a message from Eren to Eren, from Eren to Grisha, or from someone unknown to Eren.
IN CHAPTER 1, DID GRISHA SEE CURRENT EREN WHEN TALKING ABOUT THE BASEMENT? 1,673 Responses
Tumblr media
For all these years, we thought  Grisha was just being rude - not even looking at Eren as he promised to show him the basement. Finally, an alternative explanation! 81.5% of us choose to believe that Grisha was looking at Eren - just not the smol Eren of Chapter 1.
WHEN ZEKE AND EREN BREAK CONTACT, EREN MENTIONS ZEKE NOT YET SEEING THE NIGHT HE ATE HIS FATHER. IS THIS SIGNIFICANT? 1,677 Responses
Tumblr media
As much as we've learned about what's driving Eren this chapter, he's still sketchy enough to raise some questions. 59% of you guys think he still has more information to share with Zeke, and by proxy, with us, about the memory of the night he ate Grisha. ~28% think he was just mocking Zeke and the fresh wounds of his reunion with Grisha, and about 12% aren't sure.
Grisha received more memories of Eren's plan, and gave the Attack Titan willingly
Maybe...? Maybe there's something else Grisha tells Eren while injecting him. Something other than the words we've already seen.
It felt like Eren was mocking Zeke, almost as if Zeke bailed out of the memory at a convenient point where he and his dad reconcile to the point seeing the latter's death to Pure Titan Eren later on could have hit him hard.
Oh lawd
THE ATTACK TITAN’S ABILITY REVEALED! WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THIS TWIST? 1,665 Responses
Tumblr media
Despite some initial confusion, nearly two thirds of the fandom (72.6%) are delighted with the Attack Titan’s ability to see the memories of future. However, while not an option on the poll, a significant number of write-ins believe that Grisha was wrong and this isn’t a typical Attack Titan ability at all, but rather the result of Eren entering the PATHS realm.
Totally supported this! As Time-Loop Conspirist! xD
AoT shouldn't be a story with time travel (memory transfer is still time travel in my book)
But I don't think it is the Attack Titan's ability at all?? That is just Grisha's conclusion from his very limited experiences. But we can actually see in this chapter that his conclusion is not true when considering the larger context. The only one who can show people the future is Eren while in possesion of the Founding Titan being in PATHS realm while touching another shifter with royal blood. That are very specific conditions to be met. Without them there is no future memory shenanigans. So while it seems like being able to get glimpses of the future is the ability of the Attack Titan to Grisha, it is only an ability of Eren's Foundig Titan under very strict circumstances. I think any other titan shifter could pull of the future memory thing as well given the right circumstances.
Calling it an asspull means you're a speedreader, Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin by name years before they were born, it gave us a hint at the Attack Titan's power without telling us directly
Grisha misinterpreted this. He's wrong.
Didn't feel like a twist since we already knew since Kruger that it was possible to see into the future. It was just confirmation.
I just hope Isayama develops this time-thing concept a little more, and for it not to be a kind of fix-all-the-plot-holes narrative magic trick.
It's cool but it still made me roll my eyes so hard you could hear it
So if the founder cant do that, does that make the attack titan the strongest there is ?
EREN LOST HIS THUMB WHEN HE BROKE FREE FROM THE CHAINS TO STOP SAND YMIR. IS IT IMPORTANT THAT HE LOST HIS THUMB, OR JUST THAT HE BROKE FREE? 1,671 Responses

A majority of you (59.6%) think that Eren’s thumb being lost is merely to show how he managed to break free from the chains, and has no deeper meaning. However, almost a quarter of respondents believe that Eren losing his preferred method of shifting is significant going forward (perhaps indicating he will lose his titan powers in the future if not necessarily his life?) Some of you even brought up that it might be significant that this happened in the Paths dimension itself.
I only noticed the thumb when taking this poll.
It’s foreshadowing for sure, lots of focus on that panel. The literal cost for his freedom from shackles was his preferred method of transforming. We can’t tell yet, but Eren lost his thumb in paths land. As far as we know no one has been injured in this place. It could be permanent. Also worth noting that he’s about to touch Ymir with a bloody hand... blood, sins of the past... there’s something there
It’s only important that he broke free of the chains
It’s to show how heavy those chains were. That, or to show that Eren has literally the pain tolerance of the one guy who got stuck in a canyon and sawed off his arm.
Eren losing his thumb is very important, it happened in the paths dimension.
IF YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT, WHAT DO YOU THINK IT MEANS? 1,463 Responses
Tumblr media
Building on the last question, we asked those of you who think Eren’s loss of his thumb important to say why. 57.8% of you think it was an important display of his determination. However, the point was brought up by some of you that the Devil as drawn in the manga and anime only has four digits on his hand!
He can no longer show approval
Grisha stabbed himself in the right hand, the one that led Faye to her death. And now, Eren's left thumb is chopped off, the classical symbol of his ability to lead humanity to salvation/destruction. It might not have any deeper narrative impact than just reminding the reader these Jaegers are at fault for whatever the outcome is, shaped by their own hand.
The devil depicted in the book is shown with only 4 fingers.
Is it too late to say I'm just in this for the fight scenes?
Because we haven't had a gratuitous moment in over five pages.
RATE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: AT THIS POINT IN THE STORY, EREN IS A VILLAIN. 1,673 Responses
Tumblr media
Another point on that gray morality, how many of you think Eren is a villain at this point in the story? 5.5% of you strongly agreed with that idea, 15.2% agreed, but a little less, and 37.2% were neutral. On the other hand, 24.3% disagreed, and 17.8% look at the aforementioned 24.3% disagreers and say, “I’m you, but stronger.”
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ONLY ONE OPTION, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY EREN’S MAIN MOTIVATION IS? 1,662 Responses
Tumblr media
Just over three quarters of you (76%) believe Eren’s main motivation is still Freedom; the alpha and omega of the manga, his driving force as much now as it ever was. Just over 17% of you think that Eren’s main motivation is his friends, a shockingly low number, unless many of you believe Freedom for himself and for his friends is one and the same. Very small numbers of you believe that he is motivated by an external force, such as the will of a Titan, or his country.
I wish Eren showed Zeke the pain the Warriors suffered due to their lack of freedom.
Does Historia fall under friends for Erens motivation?
You can't chain freedom
Eren’s about to have a heated freedom fighter moment and destroy the whole world
I think Eren kind of knows that he is doing a bad thing. We just have to look his eyes during  the Reiss attack to see that he knows he is taking a big risk. But I am sure he does that for his people and his freedom.
ON A SCALE OF 1 TO HANNIBAL LECTOR, HOW MUCH OF A PSYCHOPATH IS EREN? 1,672 Responses
Tumblr media
We got some bombshells this chapter about Eren. Some answered questions, some raised them. Of the 1,672 responses, 78.5% of you, when factoring in this new information, rated Eren Jaeger a 3 or higher on the Psychopath Scale™, with 4 being the most popular rating. 12.4% of you rated him a 2, and 9% rated him a 1.
REGARDLESS OF HIS MORALITY, HOW MUCH DO YOU LOVE EREN JAEGER ANYWAY? 1,672 Responses
Tumblr media
Regardless of any perceived psychopathy, about 56% of you guys still dedicate your hearts to Eren Jaeger. 21.5% of you dedicate like, 80% of your heart to him. ~14% rated their love at a 3, 3.9% rated it a 2, and 5.6% rated it a 1.
DO YOU THINK ISAYAMA'S "EVIL" PORTRAYAL OF EREN IS A RUSE? 1,654 Responses
Tumblr media
We are clearly a fandom divided with almost an equal number of yes’s and no’s. The remainder of the fandom is unwilling to commit but holding out hope. This wasn’t the only three-way split on the poll. The question “Does the ends justify the means?” has a similar result. Maybe there’s a connection.
The thing I love about attack on Titan is that there is no good and evil. There’s more nuance to the characters’ motivations and actions. Eren is not evil. He just is. His actions may be viewed as evil by those adversely affected by him, but I don’t think Isayama is portraying him as evil or as an antagonist. He just is. And I’m looking forward to seeing what it is exactly that he’s fighting so hard for.
Even so after what Eren did to Grisha, of how he persuaded him to remind him his hatred, plus this "EVIL" dye of his persona, I want to believe that this is his only option, it's the sacrifice that is worth paying if that means making reality " that scenario." And it is evident seeing his expression that he does not enjoy doing this at all.
Zeke and Eren are supposed to appear as an angel and a demon on each of Grisha’s shoulders, but neither is fully evil or good, so I’m not sure where Isayama is going with this.
This fandom has been in constant denial about Eren character direction, the reaction to this chapter is another show of that. I cannot wait to see what mental gymnastics they do to justify genocide once the full Rumbling Is confirmed as Eren plan.
If eren indeed become the final antagonist and plans on mass murder/ending the world.... REINER HELOS BRAUN, PLEASE SAVE US ALL.
ARE YOU HAPPY ZEKE AND GRISHA RECONCILED? 1,671 Responses
Tumblr media
Whether or not you like Grisha and/or Zeke, most of us (63.5%) thought the moment the two of them shared this chapter was beautiful. 23.1% are hesitant to jump to conclusions however, and think it is too soon to be certain of the authenticity of this reconciliation.
Grisha's feelings were unambiguously genuine, but it wasn't reconciliation he sought. As for Zeke, I'd say his current full opinion of Grisha remains to be seen, likely even by Zeke himself.
I actually teared up omg they deserve it
I know, I'm supposed to feel good about that moment and probably pity Zeke, but I just don't have it in me to sympathize with a person working hard to euthanize a whole race of people, tragic backstory or not. I do, however, sympathize with Grisha. Constantly struggling with his knowledge of the outside world and the past, struggling to bring his mission to an end because the greater good doesn't seem so great when you have to kill innocent children for it, etc. I'm happy he got some closure with Zeke at least, even if it was just in PATHS realm.
It's nice this moment happened but it still does not erase what horrible things grisha did to zeke as a father
It's nice to see Grisha has redeeming qualities and to see Zeke making a slip of the tongue and calling him dad. I loved how Zeke contrasted with Eren in comparison to Grisha.
Meh. Zeke got closure with his father, fuckin yay. -_-
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ELEMENT OF TIME TRAVEL? 1,669 Responses
Tumblr media
It’s finally confirmed! Almost half of the fandom (48.7%) can get behind Isayama throwing time travel into the mix since he’s been dropping hints since chapter one.  25% of respondents straight up love it, and 9.3% say the concept is growing on them.
Confused, but I'm loving the direction of the story. I was hoping there'd be a sci-fi element to the story, and it seems like we're starting to get it.
I do like the time travel concept but it doesn't fit in SnK universe, imho.
If AoT world indeed works in predetermined fashion it nullifies element of freewill for me. And it kinda cheapens the struggle of characters which is sad. Like, now it's all as if Eren is just following sophisticated instruction. Does that all matter? I hope so.
I'm worried about it but I hope Yams can pull it off amazingly
I don't know how people could think that the Attack Titan's ability came out of nowhere, it has been foreshadowed since literally the start and time loop theories have been going around for years. Not just based on the first few panels either but on Eren instinctively knowing how to use the power, and when Kruger got memories from the future it was pretty much confirmed.
Isn't it more like "mind travel" at this stage?
its interesting but i dont think its as complex or crazy as its made out to be
I really didn't like the time travel aspect as it leads to a paradox. I get that it was foreshadowed, but I just wish it had been handled better. Time travel is easy mess up, and these recent chapters has given me doubts on the story's direction.
Ouch. Please. How??? Why?? I still don’t get it.
Seems to have been woven into the story incredibly well and I do not really see it has time travel.  Instead it seems to be that the memories of certain titans are linked and can trancend time.
ARE OG YMIR'S EYES CLOSED, OR ARE THEY OPEN BUT BLANK? 1,666 Responses
Tumblr media
This chapter provided us with a better look at OG Ymir, but even that wasn’t enough to settle the issue of her eyes. While half the fandom believes they are closed, the other half isn’t so sure, selecting the “Open and blank” or “I’m not sure” options.
TO WHAT EXTENT DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS? 1,649 Responses
Tumblr media
The fandom is fairly evenly split three ways here on the morality question.  Slightly more than a third (34.8%) say that sometimes things can be taken Too Far and there are some lines that should not be crossed.  The remainder of the fandom was divided, with 31% believing that any action can be justified if the outcome is favorable, and 31% being unsure on this one.  There were a ton of write-ins on this one:
Any outcome is justified if you win
Since Isayama introduced us to very interesting topic of time as not a progression of events, but as a big ball of things happening all at the same moment, I think that gives us a cue to think about the artificiality of the idea that some things are just means while others are just ends, and that they are unrelated. Means and outcomes are an item, I don't think it's posible to get a good outcome from cruel means.
In real life: it depends. Here, reading a fictional story: anything goes. You guys take it this too seriously.
I lean pretty heavy into consequentialism, so I do believe in the ends justifying the means, but you also have to be careful that the means don't make you lose sight of the end. Having all the information you possibly can regarding how to reach said end is vital. Eren's ends are possibly noble, but he's working with incomplete information and could easily end up causing something terrible because of this, which is what I think will happen.
*Erwin has entered the chat*
Regardless of my own personal opinions. I do enjoy reading about characters who will do anything to get to their desired “end”
It's completely unethical to kill humans for a 'better future'. That's what Thanos and Daenarys did and they both were villains. It keeps the story spicy but I will could never write off what Eren did, even if he saves everyone in the end.
If it benefits Paradis then yes. If it benefits Marley, absofuckinlutely not
I believe in the end justify the means if it involves saving a lot of people. Not as a personal use, just like Eren is doing.
Depends on the ends and depends on the means. Context matters.
Eh I don’t know. A favourable outcome is subjective and the cost of getting there is also subjective. If I have lines I think should ever be crossed, then why shouldn’t they be crossed? What if my perspective changes afterwards? No one knows how things will turn out in the end.
"No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise."
WHO DO YOU HOPE WINS THIS COSMIC BATTLE? 1,749 Responses
Tumblr media
Morally questionable or not - most respondents (66.6%) want Eren to be successful and carry out his plan. In contrast, only 2.3% want Zeke’s plan to come to fruition. Pretty much everyone else wants both of these problematic brothers to be stopped.
A meteor. Just put them all out of their misery.
Both of them are awful so I hope everybody will join hands and stop them. This way the other characters will receive the spotlights they deserve as well. After all this series shouldn't revolve only around the Yeager bros for god sake. I'm sick of their shit.
Everything is already preordained, Erens plan will come to light. Its just interesting to see how it unfolds.
I hope someone (my boy Reiner needs his redemption, please) stops them both
I just want to know how the story will end. I don't want to have any expectations.
I think Armin will come into play somehow. He was brought back for a reason and that Eren was right when he said Armin would be the saviour of humanity.
I want Eren to just “Win”!⚡️ (But also say sorry in some way to people he has hurt >:()
I want to see eren carry out his plan BUT not because I’m rooting for him just because I have no idea what he’s trying to do now and im confused
I'm still a slave because of my ignorance so I can't make that choice for myself yet.
WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO SEE NEXT CHAPTER? 1,764 Responses
Tumblr media
Once you got PATHS™, you never go back - or at least that’s how almost half of respondents felt. Levi and Hange are certainly missed though, almost a quarter of respondents are hoping to see them next chapter.
Each chapter I get more and more confused by what's going on i'm so confused pls isayama i beg you just leave us on a cliffhanger for like 3 chapters and take us to levi and hange at least that wouldnt have confusing plot points.
MOAR P A T H S and Annie plz
It's about fith or sixth time I'm choosing "levi and hange" when questioned what I'm hoping to see next chapter. Someone go tell Isayama...
Too tired of the Yeager Bros. Wanting my Levi and Hange back.
I *would* like to see what happens when Eren catches OG Ymir, but next chapter, can we please cut away to all of the above?
I hope we get to see Ymir's memories in the next chapter, at least the memory related to where it all started
PATHSland is great, but the travels through Grisha's memories were getting a bit boring. I'm glad we're back in current PATHSland and am excited to see what happens with Eren and Ymir next chapter.
Ugh I just really REALLY want to see Historia after these Path dimension shenanigans. Non-pregnant Historia. Please.
Memories of Ymir the Founder first and foremost. Not holding my breath for a Historia cliffhanger but it would be nice too.
(Guys, where is the Floch option, I miss him)

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE CHAPTER? 250 Responses
Eren was his daddy's daddy
It has come to my attention that I am too stupid for this manga
Gotta love the irony : Zeke wanting to save eren from grisha's brainwashing while in fact grisha's been lowkey brainwashed by Eren the whole time. Also zeke turning out to be Dad's favourite, who would have thought ? And remember when Eren wanted to die because he learned that his dad slaughtered the Reiss family ? Yeah, didn't age well...
Probabaly one of the better chapters. Much explanation and dialog. Less Titan action and SC flying around. Just how I like it.
Thank fuck Isayama has the IQ of Einstein hopped up on speed, any lesser writer would've fucked up the time travel aspect.
So Grisha is asking his older son, who murdered maaaaany people for the sake of his terrible plan, to stop his younger son from executing his terrible plan and murder more people? The Jeagers are all psychopaths.
Having mixed thoughts about all of this. I've been getting more and more skeptical at each chapter about the direction of this whole arc, and I wonder how Isayama will wrap up all of this in a satisfying manner under a year.
shit wus hapening
Gimme rumbling pls.
I think the roller coaster has just begun
Eren told Isayama to make Reiner suffer
i am patiently waiting for isayama to finish the series and THEN comment whether it was bad writing or not. I just hope he is not writing himself into a corner and pull a GoT ending....
I hate both Zeke and Eren’s plans ( if Eren’s plan truly is the rumbling) . However, if I had to chose one to carry out I’d probably go with Zeke’s. Euthanasia is terrible but if Eren’s plan truly is the rumbling then that would kill almost everyone. At least with Zeke’s plan less people will die. Killing off one race is better than killing off almost everyone.
Eren Kruger telling Grisha that Mikasa and Armin need to be saved despite the fact neither were born at the time makes perfect sense now: it was Kruger's Attack Titan powers kicking in where he received a future vision of when Grisha would pass the Attack Titan to his son. That was the earliest foreshadow I was able to pinpoint regarding the Attack Titan twist, but the title "To you, 2000 years in the future," seems to also tie into this as well since it addresses someone in the future, as if someone from long ago is talking to someone from the future (a future Attack Titan user--most likely Eren)!
this chapter is mind blowing. the moment where grisha reconciled with zeke, i wonder if eren purposely made it to save his father from regret before died and to save his brother from his dead father's shadow.
Since the next chapter is the final chapter of the volume I feel like we will get the conclusion of the path realm arc thingie, it wouldn't make sense if they were going to do a levi chapter at the last chapter of the volume
So far, chapter 50 is still my favorite anniversary chapter. I feel like the actual climax of the story, which is possibly what we heard in the ending audio, will be the chapter that's most likely to be able to top that. I genuinely enjoyed this chapter as well, but I was expecting a bit more out of it than what we got considering this chapter marked the 10th anniversary of the manga's serialization. Regardless of that, this chapter did offer very important revelations that I'm excited to see play out in future chapters.
Look, I just want Eldians of both Paradis and Liberio live freely and happily and I don't want the entire world to be destroyed. Eren wants the first part (at least for Paradis) and Zeke wants the second. Armin save us!
I don’t see why so many fans are surprised about Eren’s behavior. He was 9 when he killed two men willingly. He’s always so full of hate during some of his titan fights. That boy will always prioritize what he personally believes is right in the moment, even if it ruins his friendships. He does care a lot, which is why he’s so passionate about his actions, & that’s dangerous.
I really liked the visuals, I feel like Issayama is having a lot of fun drawing these paths chapters.
The Reiss kids actively wanted Frieda to kill Grisha so why was he even conflicted about killing them, smh
We have Three-eyed raven time travel magic now, won’t be surprised to see Greenseers, Skinchangers or dragons in the future.
I tear up every chapter recently man. every time we revisit old memories, something is revealed or people talk about their dreams. It all just makes me realize how much time has passed and how we’re so close to the end. Fantastic 10th anniversary chapter and a fitting reveal of the Attack Titan’s power. It really highlights how while this is Eren/Grisha’s story, but really it’s the Attack Titan’s. They’re connected through that Titan but simply because of that Titan this entire history can be made. And that’s why the work’s title is also the name of the one thing that drives this story, much like itself, forward. 進撃の巨人
Zeke’s PowerPoint presentation was completely hijacked. There is no objective truth regarding heroes and villains. However, it remains unclear whether what Eren wants is ideal for everyone, eldians or just the people Who aren’t important people to him. I still think the rumbling is bogus. It’s been talked about way too much, if it were to happen where’s the shock? Also it screws everyone over because of how fire tornadoes work.
I wish Eren would teach me 9D chess
You think they have sour cream in paths? (PT:: We missed you!)

1x02 / incorporeal girlfriend
CHARLOTTE:
Hello Violet Beach! Charlotte Cranor-Liu here to keep informing the general public–or, the not-general not-public–about how terrible everything is!
So! Let’s talk.
I’m Char, I’m sixteen, junior at the Corielli Academy For Creative Youths, and your new best friend. Unless, like, we’ve already met, in which case, you already know what I think of you.
So. Where to start? Cuz I got stories. Uh. At fight call today, I hit Andrew Meyer for real, which was pretty satisfying. Cuz he’s the worst? AJ high-fived me afterward, and actually told me where he worked? Which was super satisfying, cuz I got kicked out of the Starbucks for fighting in the alley by it? In fairness, the guy stole tips, it was–it was morally an obligation. But the assistant manager was like, “oh, but now he’ll sue us, and why did you claim to be an employee,” which, like, has she never heard of getting into character to add more feeling to a situation? He would be more likely to give it back if he thought he was stealing my money? Just—whatever. I needed a new coffee-source and now I have one.
But, anyway, AJ took me to the Bean Zone today, which, cool, I didn’t know they were even open. Neither did anyone else, though, I don’t think because it was empty. Which might also be because their coffee is kind of the worst? Still.
I kept AJ busy, though. He used his employee discount, so, I only paid, like, ten bucks total for my thirteen drinks. So. After I was properly caffeinated and his two-hour shift ended, which, I didn’t even know they did those, we started biking to his place, and he–he fell. And I got nervous, and I grabbed his arm to help him up once I was sure he was okay, and when I made contact, the–
Well, Teresa talked about this last time, but the sky went that gross purple color. And I assumed tehat–I assumed that the glow was because of us touching, so I let go, and then–I couldn’t.
And then the breeze that’s always there happened again. And we were back on the road, on our bikes, and we were pedalling. Like nothing happened.
And he said, like, uh, “Nice grip,” or something, and I nodded, because my grip’s pretty nice, and we were just, in, like, a really weirdass situation, so.
Anywho. So we went back to my place and my sister was all like, oh, wow, who’s this, your–censored rude term that disrespects AJ, who is, like, maybe my only friend–and so I yelled at her?
I mean. He’s not my only friend. I–he is.
Why can’t I say that I have other friends? Like–I’m trying to lie, right now.
Um. Okay. Cool. So.
We’ll get to that later.
But, anyway, I did scream at her, yes. Cuz she was an ass. As per ush.
So. Anyway. AJ and I went up to my room and started watching a bootleg of—y’know? If this, like, truth serum thing going on’s a thing, I’m not gonna try to name the show. Cuz it’s embarrassing. I wanted to—no. Okay.
Can’t lie! That’s—
Ugh! That’s so stupid!
Um. What else? I think I saw a ghost during photography today, but that’s just how the woods are sometimes. AJ and I broke into some asshole’s beach house back there for this week’s project, because last year the guy who owns it was a creep to me. But I think that maybe his house is haunted? Cuz there was this, like, weird mist in the living room right by the TV.
But again, that’s just how the woods are. I think. That’s not really my zone. But, of all places in this town to already be haunted? That’s, like, top thirteen spots, natch.
Also: Gregory And Janet Wilson Who Live In The Beach House Development In The Woods From May To September Every Year But Who Live In Virginia Otherwise left three spare keys under the lion statuette in their uglyass overgrown garden. So, there. Make of that what you will.
But. It’s a supernatural occurrence, or whatever you wanna call it, so I should put it on here. The ghost sighting. Not his key location. That’s–that’s just a thing that I know. Obvi.
The mist was, like–it was kind of all-consuming? Like, in that way that people are always all-consumed by beauty, but not really, because I was also having heart palpitations. Or something. Not really sure what heart palpitations are, but, uh. I was overwhelmed by the beauty but also? Very, very afraid of it. I felt like I was frozen in place, like I was being swallowed by it–
And then AJ said, “Are you okay?” and I snapped out of it. I asked him if he saw it, and he nodded, was like, “uh yeah, but, like, we could agree before entering that the woods are super haunted,” and I agreed, but, like, he didn’t seem to get the vibes that I did. Swear to god, I heard horror movie music behind me.
Uh. The Corielli board is meeting tonight, and I’m supposed to talk about the theater program, just–I don’t like talking in front of the PTA, because I don’t know any of their kids, like, logically, I should know their kids. There are maybe 200 people in the high school, and I know most of them. I know all of their faces.
But the Corielli board’s faces don’t look like anybody. Like, literally. I’ve talked at Corielli board meetings, like, seven times, and I cannot tell you what a single parent looks like.
Which might be supernatural happenings also? Nice.
[faux-excited]
Mystery! Intrigue! Cool!
[a pause, a sigh]
At least this truth-curse-or-whatever-the-hell-it-is has room for jokes. That’s, like, legitimately cool.
Um. So, I have to talk to the board tonight, and I think that’ll be—that—shit. Shit, it’s in ten minutes.
I’ll record more later.
[static, and a click. CHARLOTTE is out of breath.]
Okay, I’m back. I’m—holy shit.
So, I think the truth curse is off, but—like, obvi, I’m not gonna—I can promise that I’m not exaggerating.
So, the board. The board.
So, I think I said that they might be paranormal activity? They super are. I’m usually late, when I go to meetings? But I was on-time, and, uh, I was supposed to stay in the auditorium, but I went backstage to check on the set, but. Whatever. I was backstage. And so were they.
The board, I mean.
And they were—they were silent, in a circle, staring at each other. All of them. No one said anything, for a minute—like, I started timing a few seconds in, and it was at least seventy-seven seconds.
And one of them looked up, and just—feedback and sirens came pouring out of his mouth, like during an emergency when you’re watching TV or—
And he looked at me, blinked, and said, “Miss Cranor-Liu, you made it!” and he pushed through the circle, and nobody moved, just—and he grabbed my shoulders, and I wanted to—I wanted to hit him, to—
He just said, “The meeting’s cancelled, dear, didn’t you hear?”
I tried to take in his face, just cuz, and—nothing stood out to me.
And I tried to pull away, to hit him, to—to, like, kick him in his balls, or whatever, and my body just—it froze. And then there was that stupid purple again, and—
And I was outside. And I checked my email, and I didn’t get a cancellation notice, so—uh.
Something’s happening at Corielli. And, uh, I think—four or five of us went to Corielli, like, Teresa and Elaine def didn’t, and Benji, like—I’ve seen him on campus before, like, when I was in middle school, but also, I’m pretty sure he’s omnipresent, so. Who knows, with him. But the majority of us involved went to Corielli, so—like. That’s relevant, I think? Put it on your conspiracy board, next to the seven photos of Avril Lavigne and her dopplegangers. Use green yarn, for, like—for my sake. S’a good color for conspiracy theory boards that you never see anywhere.
I watch a lot of conspiracy theory videos, just to—to laugh at that. Also, they’re so consistent to me? So they’re very relaxing. Good to fall asleep to. Like, some folks need white noise or ASMR or whatever, but a good ol’ Andy Kaufman death hoax ten hour loop, y’know? Or, like, a Sondheim is multiple people one. It exists. You have to look hard for it, but, like, it almost convinced me that there are eighteen of him, so it’s worth it. I watched a seven-part documentary on the moon-landing thing when I was a kid, and that thing just, like—it got me so interested. I’m not crazy or anything. But this is ringing major documentary alarm bells. Maybe I can hit up some clickbait site and they can send folks over here to wrap a nice bow on this whole weird situation.
[beat]
Nobody’s gonna listen to this, like—and AJ’s the only person who’ll care, so, like, might as well talk on here.
Mae Babson the new transfer student is hot as hell. Like—I try not to have crushes, because they’re dumb, and they keep my eyes off the prize, which is to say, y’know. College. My art.
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that feelings are pointless and that we’d be way better off without them, y’know? Especially when those feelings are for really dreamy girls who manage to look, like, at least 70 percent like she’s into girls, even though this is Corielli, so, like, she could be the straightest girl on earth, and also she’s weirdly nice, like—nicer than most people. And it’s kind of annoying how nice she is, like, she—she’s nice to everybody. Even to people who don’t deserve it.
But. Anyways. She’s super hot and I’m kinda sorta in love with her. Whatever. Rant over. I’ll edit that out.
So. Ghosts and mystery and intrigue. Woo.
Y’know, maybe Mae’s caught up in this mystery, actually, cuz—well, she only showed up after all that happened. Maybe she’s, like—maybe she’s a ghost. That’s the nightmare, honestly, being in love with a ghost. Like, second only to her being straight? Worst case scenario.
I could write a solid one act about being in love with a ghost and, like, protag comes to accept that she’s dead and is willing to make this work, but ghost girl’s like, “Oh, too bad, don’t like girls. Sorry, honey!” And that’s the plot twist. Sad ending. A tragicomedy for everyone.
But. Incorporeal Girlfriend and playwriting dreams aside, it is weird that she showed up, cuz—we never get new juniors, especially not midyear? So. It’s not entirely out there that she’s involved. Put her pic up next to the X-Files poster, connect ‘em with red yarn. For love symbolism.
Also, she’s like, otherworldly-ly attractive, so. That contributes to Benji’s alien theory. Also, Benji? I don’t care about your alien theory. Or that you wrote your thesis on aliens. Or that you—
Ugh. Just. The email thread is very long and you aren’t Agent David Duchovny On The X-Files I Don’t Know The Character Name But Oh Boy Do I Know Who David Duchovny Is. Also, use the goddamn group chat? Some of us don’t ever check our emails. And I know you’re gonna call me blasphemous or something for not knowing the X-Files guy’s name, which, yeah, I did that on purpose.
So, um, I was helping out the lighting designer—Ollie, the other day, because if the show looks like shit it’s my fault somehow, and they kept asking me about purple lights. I forgot about this, like—
Wait.
God, I can’t stop thinking about the board, actually. I don’t know why I didn’t say anything. I’m—I’m pretty self-aware, I would have said something. I’m me, for God’s sake, I would’ve said something half-charming and half-assholey, and then I would’ve been kicked out, and I would’ve, uh, maybe tried to pick a physical fight, and then—yeah. You know the deal. I told the Starbucks story earlier. I think—I think they somehow stopped me from saying anything, like—just like that force wouldn’t let me lie or let go of AJ’s hand or fight back—there’s always an inability to do something.
I swear, if this interferes with the show, I’ll fight God. Or whatever force is out there, like—I will press legal charges against fate or destiny or the passage of time or aliens or whatever the fuck. And also punch it.
The lighting designer stuff—that’s just me being paranoid, but the—the board, that’s real, and I’m scared as hell. I’m gonna—I’m gonna maybe do some recon, re: that, get those costume slash makeup design elective credits I’ve been trying for. I haven’t taken the class, because it’s seniors only and also because Ms. Dunkers hates me because her nephew accused me of selling him fake Rent tickets, which, I didn’t know they were fake, so, he can’t blame me, so she won’t let me in her classes anymore. She has explicitly told admin that “Miss Cranor-Liu is not to enroll in any of my electives no matter how much she complains to you.” So I asked admin, like, can I just do a bunch of independent studies, and I think they’re afraid of me? So they said yes.
Anyway.
I’m gonna sneak in on next week’s board meeting as an interested potential transfer student. Need an alias, and you know that it will be Faith Deathstrike. Which is an unfortunate last name, but a badass codename.
So. Uh. I’m signing off. Come to the show, week of February twentieth at the Corelli auditorium, and watch me get possessed by an actual ghost during my solo, or whatever. And if I get ritually sacrificed at the board meeting, now you know what led up to my disappearance! This is basically Serial, now, but in real time, right?
Anyway. Cool. Thanks. Bye.

It’s Crunch Time and Data Shows the USPS Is Still Experiencing Delays
This article was sent on Tuesday to subscribers of The Mail, Motherboard’s pop-up newsletter about the USPS, election security, and democracy. Subscribe to get the next edition before it is published here, as well as exclusive articles and the paid zine.
Hi everyone, exciting news: Our second zine has been printed and is currently on the way to us, and will be mailed out to subscribers later this week or early next week. This month's edition is about a topic that has always been near and dear to our hearts: Hacking. Since most of our hacking coverage is about things that happen online, we thought it'd be cool to have a snapshot of where hacking culture is, in a printed zine. The issue features stories by Motherboard staff and this incredible cover art by Rebekka Dunlap:

Anyone who subscribes now will also get a copy of our first zine. There are also a few people who have subscribed since we sent out the first zine—we will ship you both zines at the same time.
If you want to get in on the first batch, please subscribe by Friday.
We are now a week from Election Day (somehow!) and mail service in many parts of the country still sucks. Two areas in particular where mail service sucks are Philadelphia and Detroit, Democratic strongholds in key swing states. The Washington Post published an article focusing on mail problems in those two cities as well as other swing states, although the article also made clear they're hardly the only areas experiencing delays.
Mail delays are persisting despite the USPS's carefully worded promises to stop doing some—but not all—of the stuff that made people angry over the summer, at least until the election is over. For example, they stopped dismantling sorting machines but didn't promise to put any back in service (a few recent media reports claimed a federal judge ordered them to put the machines back together; the order merely stated the USPS must do so if it could no longer accommodate election mail which the USPS has long maintained won't be an issue). They said they would not ban late or extra truck trips or overtime but also insisted they never did that in the first place, even though they obviously curtailed them significantly. And the USPS never in fact fully resumed late or extra trips, which still lag far behind pre-DeJoy levels along with overall service. In sum, delays are persisting despite court orders that mandate USPS management knock it off (to use a technical legal term).
Why does mail service still lag its pre-DeJoy levels? And does it matter for tallying votes?
We live in a country in which all votes matter but some votes matter more than others. If you live in a swing state, the marginal value of your vote in the presidential election is a lot higher than mine is in New York. Similarly, mail delays in some parts of the country could have a much greater significance than in others.
Using performance data released by the USPS as part of one of the court cases, I tried to create one chart that summarizes first class mail delivery performance since the beginning of the year. It's a little messy since it's broken down by the USPS's 67 service districts, but I think it tells an important story. Below is a screenshot of the chart, but you can play around with an interactive version of it here (the big swooping outlier that runs off the chart in April is the New York district).
Tumblr media
USPS First Class Service Performance by District
Every chart tells a story, sometimes misleadingly so. But the one this chart is telling me accords with all of the reporting I and many others have done on the USPS so far. So I think it's worth listening to.
The story goes like this: In 2020, two events destabilized USPS performance in different ways. The first was the pandemic, which began in mid-March in certain parts of the country and, in case you haven't noticed, is still going. It destabilized service in specific places at specific times. While this could impact delivery rates elsewhere if it caused key sorting facilities to be short-staffed, in general the impacts were relatively localized. To tell this story in terms of the way the graph looks, it caused some districts to get detached from the big clump of lines that represents the pre-2020 status quo. But the status quo clump didn't change much if at all.
Then, in July, the clump undergoes a "W" pattern, where service tanks, briefly rebounds a bit, tanks again, then rises once more to almost-but-not-quite reach the status quo levels again. This second destabilizing event coincides with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's sudden policy shifts as well as the peak of coronavirus case counts over the summer.
However, I think it's pretty clear this "W" pattern was the result of DeJoy's changes, not coronavirus cases as the USPS continues to argue. We saw throughout the previous months how coronavirus affects mail service, and this looks altogether different.
When coronavirus delays mail service, some districts fall off the clump as case counts rise in that area. That's not what we see in July. Instead, we see a sudden, simultaneous drop-off across the entire postal network. Districts didn't fall off the clump. The clump went into freefall.
What happened afterwards is the most important lesson for today: the clump stopped being quite so clumpy, meaning service performance became more erratic and with a higher variance between districts. You can tell this by comparing the density of the lines in January to that of September. In January, the clump ranged from 85 percent to 95 percent, or a 10-point variance. By September, the clump is spread out from a high of just over 90 percent all the way down to about 70 percent, or a 20-point variance.
In total, the story of this chart is one of an organization losing control. Not just in swing states, but everywhere. Even non-swing states like Alabama and Mississippi are struggling with mail service, ranking towards the bottom of first-class mail delivery.
Which brings us back to the second of the two questions I asked at the top of this newsletter: does the USPS service tanking matter for counting votes? The best answer I can give right now is: probably, but we don't yet know how much.
First, we simply don't know how many people are waiting to mail ballots until the last minute. According to the U.S. Elections Project, there were 47 million mail-in ballots still waiting to be returned as of Sunday. Some of them will be mailed back in the last week. A smaller number of them will probably be mailed back on November 1 or 2. But many likely won't be mailed back at all, with voters either opting to cast their ballot in person on Election Day, during early voting if available, or not at all. Plus, a few states have changed postmarking and ballot delivery deadlines to add some buffer time for sluggish mail service, so even if a ballot is mailed back on, say, November 2, it might be counted in one state but not the other, even if they are both delivered on November 4.
Second, it's not clear whether the overall first-class mail statistics accurately reflect how ballots specifically are handled (which are only about two percent of overall first class mail during these election weeks). The USPS has pledged to make all possible resources and alternatives available to expedite ballot delivery, particularly in the final week before Election Day. How much will they actually do, and to what extent will it move ballots faster and more reliably? This is all yet to be seen.
Third, the distinction between being on time and being two days late has a huge difference in service delivery. According to the USPS, for the week of October 10 to October 16, 97.25 percent of first-class mail was delivered either on time or less than two days late. That's within a percentage point of its performance in January.
So a randomly selected voter within the U.S. would have roughly the same expectation a ballot mailed by Thursday will reach their election official by the end of Election Day with the similar confidence as before the pandemic. But, on aggregate, a one percentage point dip across tens of millions of ballots could mean hundreds of thousands of ballots not getting delivered in time. That could make a huge difference if these delayed ballots are concentrated in just a few key areas like Detroit and Philadelphia. It could also make little difference if they're spread out across the entire country roughly in proportion to the service performance lines we saw above. And, of course, smaller numbers of ballots make bigger differences in outcomes the further down the ballot you go. How much of a difference the USPS will make is one of those things you can only really know by doing the math after the votes are tallied. But I think we can all agree it would be better for democracy if the USPS was functioning like it did in early June.
This Week in Mail
I just sent links on Thursday and not that much has happened since then. Here’s a cool story about India’s postal network. Which reminds me, I’ve gotten a few questions about how postal services work in other parts of the world, how they have handled the internet transition, etc. I will have more to say on this but for now please read this excellent London Review of Books article from 2011.

6 winners from Week 15 of the NFL season
Tumblr media
Jameis Winston and Eli Manning headlined a great week for NFL interception leaders.
The NFL playoff picture is becoming clearer with just two weeks remaining in the regular season. In Week 15, the Patriots punched a ticket to their 11th straight postseason. The Bears saw their NFC North title hopes dashed out like a spent cigarette. The Chiefs strengthened their case as the world’s best snow football team.
The Rams’ blowout loss to the Cowboys somehow clinched playoff spots for the Packers, Seahawks, AND 49ers. The race to the top of the AFC South may have been decided by some delightful chaos.
But Week 15 was about more than just final scores, unlikely turnovers, and playoff fates. As always, Sunday’s action created a healthy backdrop for storylines to develop and crash into one another as the league careens toward Super Bowl 54. There were several winners across the NFL landscape, and they stretch beyond the box score.
So who were the week’s biggest winners?
It wasn’t: Josh Gordon, who is not a quarterback
Gordon has been a useful, if not stellar, acquisition for the Seahawks. The former Brown and Patriot only has seven catches in his five games as a member of the team, but he’s turned those opportunities into 19.9 yards per catch. On Sunday, he was responsible for a 58-yard catch on his lone target of the day.
That wasn’t the only time Gordon got a touch against the Panthers, though.

— Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) December 15, 2019
Gordon, called into duty by an overthinking-it Pete Carroll, took a reverse roughly 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage before uncorking a deep ball to a covered DK Metcalf. He blanked safety Tre Boston in the process, and the underthrown ball was quickly scooped up and turned into a Panthers possession. Carolina couldn’t do anything with the opportunity — Kyle Allen would throw an interception of his own two plays later — but it snuffed out a potential scoring drive in a 30-24 Seattle victory that was a little closer than the Seahawks would have preferred.
Now on to ...
Week 15’s actual winners
6. Younghoe Koo, who is so good at onside kicks he can recover them with only 10 guys
Koo’s introduction to the NFL in 2017 was memorable for all the wrong reasons. He didn’t make an appearance in the 2018 regular season and wasn’t signed by the Falcons to replace Matt Bryant until Week 10. In that short span, however, the former Georgia Southern standout has been solid. He’s converted 17 of his 19 field goal attempts and has made all but one of his extra points.
More impressively, he’s been responsible for two of the league’s seven successful onside kicks in 2019. He would have made it three , but the Falcons decided they’d rather play Week 15 in hard mode.
Well here's a new one! The #Falcons recover a surprise onside kick … but are penalized because they don't have 5 men on either side of the ball. Why'd that happen? Because they only have 10 men on the field. pic.twitter.com/9xui3bVl4b
— Justin Felder (@Justin_FOX5) December 15, 2019
Atlanta’s inability to put the proper number of players on the field for the kick negated its recovery thanks to an illegal procedure penalty for not having enough men on the field. Even so, it was another brick added to the legacy the young kicker is building with the Falcons. The NFL’s onside kick may be a broken play, but if Koo’s behind it, your team somehow has better than 50/50 odds of landing on the ball.
The Falcons, by the way, are now 4-2 with Koo on the roster. They were 1-7 before he arrived.
5. Stephon Gilmore, who Andy Dalton was not prepared to face
Dalton’s return to the Bengals’ lineup was the catalyst behind his team’s lone win of the season. For two quarters, it looked like he may be able to pull off another upset when he led Cincinnati to an early 10-7 lead over the Patriots.
Then Gilmore took over.
Gilmore, a $65 million signing from the typically thrifty Pats back in 2017, has emerged as one of the game’s top defensive backs over the past three years. That was on full display in Ohio.
His first interception gave the Patriots the field position that led to their second touchdown of the day. On the ensuing drive, he decided to give his offense a drive off by jumping all over a lazily thrown out route and taking another Dalton pick all the way to the end zone.
2 + 4 = 6. @BumpNrunGilm0re PICK SIX. pic.twitter.com/GDYGBQf7ih
— New England Patriots (@Patriots) December 15, 2019
In less than eight minutes, Gilmore had forced two turnovers that turned a surprisingly tight game into the blowout most people had expected. He’s now got a career-high (and league-leading) six interceptions on the year and is cruising toward a second straight first-team All-Pro selection.
He’s one of three Patriot defenders with at least five INTs this fall, alongside Devin McCourty and J.C. Jackson — the latter of whom also picked off Dalton twice. On Sunday, that group lifted New England to a playoff spot and a 21-point win, even on a day where Tom Brady threw for just 128 yards.
4. The Cowboys, who finally look like they’d like to win the NFC East
Dallas ran through the first 14 weeks of the season without a single win over a team with a winning record and was 3-7 in its last 10 games. The Rams had primed themselves for a late playoff push by upending the Seahawks in Week 14 and had won five of their last seven. These factors conspired to make LA a slight favorite Sunday afternoon, even in the unfriendly confines of AT&T Stadium.
So of course the Cowboys boat-raced the Rams right off the field.
Dallas crumpled Los Angeles into a ball and then kicked it into the trash in a 44-21 de-pantsing that finally made the Cowboys look like contenders. An often underwhelming defense allowed just seven points in the first 56 minutes before easing up in garbage time. Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott ran for 248 yards and three touchdowns between them. Tavon Austin scored the easiest touchdown of his life:

— Christian D'Andrea (@TrainIsland) December 15, 2019
The win keeps the Cowboys firmly entrenched atop the messy NFC East. A similar win next week against the Eagles would clinch the division title and cool the calls for head coach Jason Garrett’s firing. The question now is whether this can last. Was the 44-point explosion the catalyst to a December rally, or just the next data point in an inconsistent season that’s jumped from highs to lows like P.T. Barnum taking a polygraph?
We’ll know more next week, but for now the Cowboys are looking like they might be more than just a sad-to-watch home underdog in the Wild Card Round.
3. Travis Kelce, who left us all with a massive, unanswerable question
Did you know Travis Kelce, star of E! Network’s non-hit dating show Catching Kelce, also moonlights as a football player? A pretty good one, too!
Kelce was the star of Patrick Mahomes’ snow-bound revival Sunday, catching 11 passes (on 13 targets) for 142 yards in a 23-3 win that flaunted the full power of Kansas City’s passing offense. It was his first 100+ yard performance since Week 2, and it helped him to reach a notable milestone. He became the first tight end in league history to have four straight 1,000-yard seasons.
That leaves us with a very important question. Is Kelce the league’s best tight end? The only other player in his league at the moment is 49ers’ Hulk George Kittle, who at one point trucked Ricardo Allen so hard that it made him laugh hysterically.
George Kittle was laughing as he pancaked a Falcons defender pic.twitter.com/spiHRh72kn
— Kevin Jones (@Mr_KevinJones) December 15, 2019
He also had 13 catches for 134 yards (and a costly fumble).
Last year, Kelce totaled 1,336 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns to Kittle’s 1,377 and five. This year, Kelce’s got 1,131 yards to Kittle’s 888 thanks in part to the injuries that cost Kittle two games. On the other hand, Kittle has caught 79 percent of his targets to get there (Kelce’s at 70 percent). Per SIS, they’ve been similarly effective in run blocking as well.
So who gets the nod? There’s no wrong answer there. If you want youth and a little extra potential, Kittle’s your guy. If you want the game-changer who has put up 33 catches for 425 yards in six postseason games, then Kelce’s the right choice.
2. Eli Manning, who god willing will go down as the league’s perfect .500 quarterback
Coming into Week 15, Manning had a regular season record of 116-117. Daniel Jones’ ankle injury gave him a glorious opportunity to even things out against the Dolphins.
Manning restored balance to the universe when he led the Giants to a victory in what may have been his last appearance at MetLife Stadium. The 2004 No. 1 draft pick threw for 283 yards and a pair of touchdowns while balancing that out with, in true Eli fashion, the bad decisions that led to three interceptions. He started the game with a standing ovation from an appreciative crowd and ended it met by his family as he walked off the field a 36-20 winner.

— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) December 15, 2019
While that threw a wrench in the team’s hope for 2020’s top overall pick, New York’s course to the No. 2 selection and a shot at Ohio State pass rusher Chase Young remains intact. If Jones returns to the lineup and this was the last we saw of Eli, he got to leave his final game a winner while still leaving his team in place to improve in the future. That’s a win/win for the Giants — which is only one fewer win than they’ve had so far in 2019.
1. Jameis Winston, who was his truest self Sunday
For the second straight week and fourth time this season, Winston kicked off his day by throwing an interception on his very first drive. Then, he snapped back to form and threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns ... in the first half alone.
Winston, playing without human cheat code Mike Evans but with a chipped bone in the thumb of his throwing hand, shredded the Lions’ defense like Crock Pot pork in a thorough 38-17 pasting. With 8:15 left in the second quarter, he had more passing touchdowns (three) than the Lions had total yards (two). He finished his day with 458 passing yards and four scores — his second straight game with 450+ yards and four TDs.
No one profited more from Winston’s massive swing than Breshad Perriman. The former first-round pick’s three touchdown catches in Week 15 were as many as he had in his first two seasons in the league.
3️⃣ ➡️ 1️⃣9️⃣ For the third time today, Jameis hits Breshad for a score! pic.twitter.com/4sMnK0QP6m
— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@Buccaneers) December 15, 2019
He’ll have to keep coming up big if Winston’s going to keep this pace. A late injury to Chris Godwin means Tampa Bay might have to play out the rest of 2019 without either of its Pro Bowl-caliber wideouts. That could be brutal for an offense whose running game averaged just 1.7 yards per carry against the Lions.
Winston is still a deeply flawed passer — that early interception was his league-high 24th of the season — but he’s showcasing his value as he plays out the final games of his rookie contract. Performances like Sunday’s shellacking could be enough to convince some needy GM to hand him $50 million in 2020. The way he’s played lately, he could even wind up strapping in for five more years in Tampa.

News: Major Bitcoin Bull Indicator / Binance Mainnet Launched: Get Prepared
Tumblr media
What’s up every body and welcome back to field mining there may be a lot on the crypto information entrance in these days and we’re gonna take a seem at all of them and at the forefront and the major we’re gonna talk about this golden cross that every person is speakme about in reality we just crossed it and it signifies relatively bullish habits and once we take a seem at what’s sensible and now not realistic in phrases of expectations and in different information we bought Vitalik saying let’s increase staking rewards for Ethereum someday we additionally got the CFTC chair saying or hinting at what’s in all probability delaying Bakkt for Bitcoin and on high of that we’re gonna take a really deep seem at through Binance chain it can be simply launched live in these days and there is a lot of alterations I ought to beware of for illustration new addresses and also what the BEP-2 token we’re gonna take a look at intensive appear at that in latest episode so ensure you keep for that and with all my videos that you may skip straight to the section you’re inquisitive about so what you want to do is you need to move and scroll down to the top comments and click on the time for his or her remark the subject you are concerned about everything of course blanketed right here is my personal opinion now not financial advice and we bought quite a bit to duvet at present so let’s get into it let’s off through taking a seem on the markets and the markets are flashing a bit bit inexperienced to trap us in so we bought Bitcoin at five thousand 5 hundred and sixty that’s certainly an all-time excessive for this yr we started off this yr with three thousand 700 and it can be getting pushed up quite loads and there’s plenty of pleasure as good on reddit considering that what we’re seeing correct now what each person is relatively excited for is this golden pass formation on Bitcoin and what persons are pronouncing is this is a important indication for to off the bull market so in phrases of technical analysis what’s the Golden cross what does it imply whoa it can be these two traces crossing one of the vital white line representing the 50-day relocating usual crossing with the 200-day moving typical and what quite a lot of humans are viewing this as is that it is a shift in market conduct sort of the formal shift back into a Bullis mentality and if you seem at very deeply and also you see plenty of these crazy articles I right away saw this one got here to mine analyst predicts Ethereum to hit 2000 after impending golden pass and we see various these articles just lately simply to clickbait every body into studying dumb and a variety of the foundation at the back of it is certainly headquartered on this guy called science guy so science guy in the event you guys don’t know he is been making beautiful correct predictions of when bullish behaviors comes and he is been predicting the tip of the endure market coming this month so on April 24th there was type of like additional adjustments he is been pronouncing yet between April 30th to made a fifth it can be been flopping a little bit but he’s seeing a major upswing for the cost of each Ethereum and for Bitcoin and this is what’s getting every body so excited so in the event you appear at reddit we received shit row insane noob I simply maxed out all my bank cards purchasing Bitcoin now there is definitely various pleasure principally with regards to shitpost on reddit for me individually i’m still taking my historical stance which is dollar cost typical and in general that is considering of my previous expertise due to the fact that I sort of remorse vastly no longer buy a extra Bitcoin back when it was once in 2012 and Bitcoin was once ten bucks I mean on the finish of the day whether or not I bought it at $10 $12 might be even $15 it can be a enormous gain my heart’ll in the end in phrases of other factors to get excited for crypto we bought crypto to crypto quantity surging via 70% in march so this is a file launched with the aid of coin examine and in their march assessment they stated that there’s a tremendous broaden so 70 percent for crypto to crypto trade and forty seven.5 for total crypto alternate sparked quantity they may be all increasing showing that there’s multiplied healthy interest for trading cryptocurrencies in terms of aetherium Vitalik is asserting that he needs to expand the return on funding for staking sooner or later for aetherium so easy methods to fully grasp this desk is as such so on this side now we have Ethereum stakes so the more Ethereum there may be staked the more annual issuance the extra a theorem that is created but also the max annual return for staking can be decreased given that you are variety of spreading that reward over quite a few ethereum state overall i am most likely very excited for when a theorem does make that transfer to proof of stake it’s much cleaner for the atmosphere and in addition it does imply that there may be more lockup for Ethereum so now the one question is when would arrive and we will still have got to wait to see that now this caught my eye over the weekend which is Serena Williams four-time Olympic gold medal for tennis she’s investing into coinbase because the title reads now at first when I first saw this i’m like what’s the cause I mean Serena’s identified for beating at tennis but not at Crypto or investment funds what’s a monitor record what’s her history but upon extra inspection of this text we realized that she definitely invested or started investing with her Serena ventures in 2014 so that is surely earlier than that major crypto Rises and she or he i am investing coinbase so that’s actually you know lovely excellent track record so that is an honestly nunu’s per se but alternatively it’s only a disclose present previous investments which included coinbase and she definitely made it go in there subsequent up now we have bed tracks they’re denying that there are any North Korean users on its platform so how did this all occur is when you consider that the brand new York department of financial services they’re accusing metrics of having inadequate insurance policies for anti money laundering now vetrix is flat-out the 90s and i surely see quite a lot of authorities doing more to exchanges someday now money laundering is quite bad however truthfully focusing on crypto exchanges is solely the effortless prey because the biggest sources of cash laundering are the centralized banks I imply just recently Deutsche financial institution’s been raided for money laundering we received JP Morgan to consistently been quality for money laundering as good we without doubt received to stop it but honestly I feel they’re looking at the flawed people just chase right down to a centralized banks in finding them no longer just in finding them however move your banking licenses if their money laundering it can be relatively simple as that and let new avid gamers come and diminish that centralized corruption that we now have on the rumor mill there is this rumor passing around that vacant cocks might be robotically submitting collectors for compensation what this means is that potentially in the event you didn’t bounce by way of the entire loops to file for misplaced money in mt.Gox you continue to would have a risk so that is really pretty cool for me in view that surely i’m a sufferer of empty cocks and i did not file all of the types incorrectly on time so there is a possibility that folks could get that so we will ought to maintain our fingers crossed now onto some greater stuff for adoptions so that you could now keep with Bitcoin on Amazon good no longer directly with Amazon but there’s a new plugin achieved by way of a corporation known as moon that permits you to use the Lightning community to pay for Amazon items in phrases of how you utilize it when you’re buying something on Amazon what will occur is on the cost page the plug-in will show a separate kind of slide to pay with the Lightning network and you can scan the QR code to pay instantly with Lightning network utilising Bitcoin all right I got click on baited into clicking on this article which is CTF C chair giancarlo guidelines out what’s retaining backs future Bitcoin futures now we now have all been hyped about again considering that it can be a new way for men and women to get into trading Bitcoin and it is been stalled so what above all did he say did he supply any signals good it seems to be with the custody a part of Bitcoin so correct now how the backed rash it holds its Bitcoin it appears that is inflicting a little little bit of trouble or hiccups with CTFC approval so we do not really be aware of exactly when this will get accepted I feel that is lovely usual we’ve visible multiple delays on backed so we variety of expect further delays except for like you understand it’s ready now on to the final subject which is finance and there may be quite a few foremost understanding here in particular if you’re or conserving B MB or utilizing B MB and likewise if you’re interested on this News: Major Bitcoin Bull Indicator / Binance Mainnet Launched: Get Prepared
Tumblr media
What’s up every body and welcome back to field mining there may be a lot on the crypto information entrance in these days and we’re gonna take a seem at all of them and at the forefront and the major we’re gonna talk about this golden cross that every person is speakme about in reality we just crossed it and it signifies relatively bullish habits and once we take a seem at what’s sensible and now not realistic in phrases of expectations and in different information we bought Vitalik saying let’s increase staking rewards for Ethereum someday we additionally got the CFTC chair saying or hinting at what’s in all probability delaying Bakkt for Bitcoin and on high of that we’re gonna take a really deep seem at through Binance chain it can be simply launched live in these days and there is a lot of alterations I ought to beware of for illustration new addresses and also what the BEP-2 token we’re gonna take a look at intensive appear at that in latest episode so ensure you keep for that and with all my videos that you may skip straight to the section you’re inquisitive about so what you want to do is you need to move and scroll down to the top comments and click on the time for his or her remark the subject you are concerned about everything of course blanketed right here is my personal opinion now not financial advice and we bought quite a bit to duvet at present so let’s get into it let’s off through taking a seem on the markets and the markets are flashing a bit bit inexperienced to trap us in so we bought Bitcoin at five thousand 5 hundred and sixty that’s certainly an all-time excessive for this yr we started off this yr with three thousand 700 and it can be getting pushed up quite loads and there’s plenty of pleasure as good on reddit considering that what we’re seeing correct now what each person is relatively excited for is this golden pass formation on Bitcoin and what persons are pronouncing is this is a important indication for to off the bull market so in phrases of technical analysis what’s the Golden cross what does it imply whoa it can be these two traces crossing one of the vital white line representing the 50-day relocating usual crossing with the 200-day moving typical and what quite a lot of humans are viewing this as is that it is a shift in market conduct sort of the formal shift back into a Bullis mentality and if you seem at very deeply and also you see plenty of these crazy articles I right away saw this one got here to mine analyst predicts Ethereum to hit 2000 after impending golden pass and we see various these articles just lately simply to clickbait every body into studying dumb and a variety of the foundation at the back of it is certainly headquartered on this guy called science guy so science guy in the event you guys don’t know he is been making beautiful correct predictions of when bullish behaviors comes and he is been predicting the tip of the endure market coming this month so on April 24th there was type of like additional adjustments he is been pronouncing yet between April 30th to made a fifth it can be been flopping a little bit but he’s seeing a major upswing for the cost of each Ethereum and for Bitcoin and this is what’s getting every body so excited so in the event you appear at reddit we received shit row insane noob I simply maxed out all my bank cards purchasing Bitcoin now there is definitely various pleasure principally with regards to shitpost on reddit for me individually i’m still taking my historical stance which is dollar cost typical and in general that is considering of my previous expertise due to the fact that I sort of remorse vastly no longer buy a extra Bitcoin back when it was once in 2012 and Bitcoin was once ten bucks I mean on the finish of the day whether or not I bought it at $10 $12 might be even $15 it can be a enormous gain my heart’ll in the end in phrases of other factors to get excited for crypto we bought crypto to crypto quantity surging via 70% in march so this is a file launched with the aid of coin examine and in their march assessment they stated that there’s a tremendous broaden so 70 percent for crypto to crypto trade and forty seven.5 for total crypto alternate sparked quantity they may be all increasing showing that there’s multiplied healthy interest for trading cryptocurrencies in terms of aetherium Vitalik is asserting that he needs to expand the return on funding for staking sooner or later for aetherium so easy methods to fully grasp this desk is as such so on this side now we have Ethereum stakes so the more Ethereum there may be staked the more annual issuance the extra a theorem that is created but also the max annual return for staking can be decreased given that you are variety of spreading that reward over quite a few ethereum state overall i am most likely very excited for when a theorem does make that transfer to proof of stake it’s much cleaner for the atmosphere and in addition it does imply that there may be more lockup for Ethereum so now the one question is when would arrive and we will still have got to wait to see that now this caught my eye over the weekend which is Serena Williams four-time Olympic gold medal for tennis she’s investing into coinbase because the title reads now at first when I first saw this i’m like what’s the cause I mean Serena’s identified for beating at tennis but not at Crypto or investment funds what’s a monitor record what’s her history but upon extra inspection of this text we realized that she definitely invested or started investing with her Serena ventures in 2014 so that is surely earlier than that major crypto Rises and she or he i am investing coinbase so that’s actually you know lovely excellent track record so that is an honestly nunu’s per se but alternatively it’s only a disclose present previous investments which included coinbase and she definitely made it go in there subsequent up now we have bed tracks they’re denying that there are any North Korean users on its platform so how did this all occur is when you consider that the brand new York department of financial services they’re accusing metrics of having inadequate insurance policies for anti money laundering now vetrix is flat-out the 90s and i surely see quite a lot of authorities doing more to exchanges someday now money laundering is quite bad however truthfully focusing on crypto exchanges is solely the effortless prey because the biggest sources of cash laundering are the centralized banks I imply just recently Deutsche financial institution’s been raided for money laundering we received JP Morgan to consistently been quality for money laundering as good we without doubt received to stop it but honestly I feel they’re looking at the flawed people just chase right down to a centralized banks in finding them no longer just in finding them however move your banking licenses if their money laundering it can be relatively simple as that and let new avid gamers come and diminish that centralized corruption that we now have on the rumor mill there is this rumor passing around that vacant cocks might be robotically submitting collectors for compensation what this means is that potentially in the event you didn’t bounce by way of the entire loops to file for misplaced money in mt.Gox you continue to would have a risk so that is really pretty cool for me in view that surely i’m a sufferer of empty cocks and i did not file all of the types incorrectly on time so there is a possibility that folks could get that so we will ought to maintain our fingers crossed now onto some greater stuff for adoptions so that you could now keep with Bitcoin on Amazon good no longer directly with Amazon but there’s a new plugin achieved by way of a corporation known as moon that permits you to use the Lightning community to pay for Amazon items in phrases of how you utilize it when you’re buying something on Amazon what will occur is on the cost page the plug-in will show a separate kind of slide to pay with the Lightning network and you can scan the QR code to pay instantly with Lightning network utilising Bitcoin all right I got click on baited into clicking on this article which is CTF C chair giancarlo guidelines out what’s retaining backs future Bitcoin futures now we now have all been hyped about again considering that it can be a new way for men and women to get into trading Bitcoin and it is been stalled so what above all did he say did he supply any signals good it seems to be with the custody a part of Bitcoin so correct now how the backed rash it holds its Bitcoin it appears that is inflicting a little little bit of trouble or hiccups with CTFC approval so we do not really be aware of exactly when this will get accepted I feel that is lovely usual we’ve visible multiple delays on backed so we variety of expect further delays except for like you understand it’s ready now on to the final subject which is finance and there may be quite a few foremost understanding here in particular if you’re or conserving B MB or utilizing B MB and likewise if you’re interested on this 12 Cruelty-Free Makeup Brands to Add to Your Makeup Bag
Hiya Gorgeous!
Do the labels on your go-to makeup products make you do a double-take? What ARE all of those impossible-to-pronounce ingredients, anyway… and are they safe?
If you’re a makeup lover like me, you might wonder if you’ll ever find healthier alternatives that work just as well as your go-to brands. Because when it comes to makeup, terms like eco-friendly and vegan haven’t always gone hand-in-hand with professional quality. But don’t put your brushes away just yet—beautiful cruelty-free makeup DOES exist, and that’s exactly what we’re talking about today!
As a kid, watching my mom do her makeup was one of my favorite activities.
I’d join her in the bathroom every morning—perched on the toilet, transfixed by each and every brushstroke. She was the glamorous teacher and I was the eager student.
My fascination only grew when I got one of those 70s Barbie styling heads, remember those? She came with her very own makeup palette: bright red, baby blue and pea green (gorg!!). I practiced on her all the time—poor Barbie had her fair share of makeup mishaps. Luckily, she was a very patient customer.
It wasn’t long until I started begging my parents for my first lip gloss, which was a big N-O until I was 13. But you probably know by now how I feel about that no word… So I’d sneak my Barbie palette onto the school bus and do my bold makeup when she wasn’t looking. And let’s just say it was bold enough to garner more than my fair share of sideways stares!
As I evolved over the years, so did my taste in makeup.
My career as a professional actress and dancer motivated me to refine my skills, and I learned a thing or two from the incredibly talented makeup artists I worked with along the way! Today, I feel most like myself with a more natural, toned-down look. And when I’m working from home, running my business and leading my unicorn team from my laptop, I prefer to let my skin breathe and just be me—totally makeup free.
But don’t get me wrong, I still love makeup! It can be a wonderful creative outlet and way to express ourselves. I’ve just learned that I don’t NEED it to feel beautiful or confident, and neither do you!
I’m also a lot more conscious about the cosmetics I do and don’t use.
Since going vegan and better educating myself about my carbon footprint, I pay much closer attention to what goes my makeup, as well as how it’s tested and its impact on the environment. To be honest, sometimes I’m still taken aback by the nasty junk hidden in our personal care products. Not to mention the brands that continue to use animal testing… what?!
I have good news, though—cosmetics don’t have to come at the cost of your conscience! The cruelty-free makeup brands I’m about to share are changing the face of the beauty industry by making kinder products without sacrificing quality.
12 Cruelty-Free Makeup Brands to Add to Your Makeup Bag
1. Thrive Causemetics
Every single product from this fabulous brand is vegan and cruelty-free. But that’s not all, Thrive Causemetics also gives back with every purchase. That’s right—every single product sold results in a donation to support domestic abuse survivors, women fighting cancer, women seeking a path out of homelessness or women veterans. You can learn more about Thrive’s mission here.
In my makeup bag: The Brilliant Eye Brightener and Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara make my peepers shine!
2. Milk Makeup
What can I say? I’m a sucker for cruelty-free with a side of cute branding! But Milk Makeup’s products aren’t just beautiful on the outside—they’re also vegan and cruelty-free. They even have a list of ingredients they promise never to use up on their website!
In my makeup bag: The Kush Fiber Brow Gel is super easy to apply and gives my brows a polished yet natural look. And the Flex Concealer provides comfy (not cakey!) coverage all day long.
3. Mineral Fusion
You might have spotted this EWG Verified brand at Whole Foods or your local health food store, which means you don’t have to make a separate trip to restock on your faves! All of Mineral Fusion’s products are cruelty-free and made in the US, and you can check out a list of vegan options on the FAQ page on their site.
In my makeup bag: I love Mineral Fusion’s vegan nail polish in the shade Tiara— it always makes me feel like a queen!
4. Beautycounter
This cruelty-free makeup brand is raising awareness about something we don’t hear much about—issues with the mica industry. Mica is used in a lot of cosmetics, but it’s often not responsibly sourced (learn more in the informative video here). I love seeing brands use their platforms to educate consumers! Check out Beautycounter’s vegan makeup options here.
In my makeup bag: This Velvet Eyeshadow Palette is full of gorgeous statement shades with fantastic color payoff. And the Sheer Lipstick in the shade Petal is one of my all-time faves!
5. Cover FX
I dig Cover FX for a lot of reasons, but the diverse shade range they offer for foundations is at the top of my list! Many makeup brands exclude folks, especially people of color, by having really limited shade ranges. I support brands like CoverFX because they’re committed to inclusion. Their products don’t come cheap, but it’s worth the investment if you can swing it!
In my makeup bag: The Natural Finish Foundation and pretty much everything else for that matter—did I mention they’re 100 percent vegan and cruelty-free?
6. EcoTools
EcoTools proves that sometimes it IS a good idea to put all your vegan eggs in one basket! They’ve got one mission—making vegan makeup brushes that look, feel and work even better than the alternatives made with animal hair. They also use recycled and renewable materials like bamboo. Even their packaging is made of tree-free paper. EcoTools brushes are also affordable, what more could we ask for?!
In my makeup bag: The Ultimate Shade Duo for my eyes and the 360 Ultimate Blend set for my face!
7. Juice Beauty
This brand lives up to its name by using botanical juice concentrates instead of water as the base for their makeup and skincare. That means their products don’t just look great—they’re also packed with antioxidants and other vitamins, as well as good-for-you phytonutrients and hydroxy acids. Turns out juice is more than just a delicious drink!
In my makeup bag: The Phyto-Pigments Last Looks Cream Blush in the shade Flush is a gloriously smooth pop of color for my cheeks!
And more cruelty-free brands for your makeup bag!
I don’t have them all on hand at once (like I said, my makeup routine is pretty minimalist these days!), but here are some more notable cruelty-free brands that deserve shoutouts!
8. e.l.f Cosmetics makes some of the most affordable vegan and cruelty-free makeup out there. I like their 16-Hour Camo Concealer and the Charcoal Hydrogel Under Eye Masks for a soothing treat!
9. W3ll People’s Hypnotist Eye Pencil is a longtime love of mine (if you’ve been following me for a while, you might remember that it was also featured in my What’s in my Makeup Bag post back in 2017!). It creates the perfect cat eye for date night… meow!
10. Axiology makes cruelty-free, vegan lipstick in knockout shades. I haven’t yet, but I can’t wait to try one of their Sheer Balms!
11. Urban Decay is always expanding their vegan options—their Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluids are incredible!
12. Anastasia Beverly Hills has some great vegan highlighters—I’m a big fan of the Sun Dipped Glow Kit.
Conscious Cosmetics 101
I hope you saw something (or a couple of somethings) that you’re excited to try! You might also be wondering how to find and evaluate your own cruelty-free faves. And lucky for you, that’s what this section is all about! These must-have tips will help you navigate the makeup aisle with ease.
Cruelty-free vs. vegan
Many folks assume that if something is labeled as vegan, it must also be cruelty-free (and vice versa). But these terms each have specific implications and are often used independently. Cruelty-free cosmetics have not been tested on animals, whereas vegan cosmetics don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients. I know it can be confusing, but just being aware of the difference will empower you to make buying decisions that align with your values!
Animal testing
We covered what cruelty-free means, but I want to be crystal clear: animal testing is a hard no in my book, end of story. Many cruelty-free makeup brands are doing just fine testing their products on humans, so as far as I’m concerned, there’s no excuse to keep hurting innocent animals. Some countries still require animal testing before products can be sold, but I prefer to stick with brands that prioritize kindness over profit.
Greenwashing
It’s cool to be eco-friendly these days, right? Many brands really do care about the environment, but some just see green… as in money. Trends like these open up opportunities for brands to capitalize without actually changing their practices.
Watch out for products that use generic terms like “natural” or packaging that gives the appearance of sustainability without any legit certifications or proof to back up their claims. Same goes for brands that claim to be organic—the FDA doesn’t regulate that term for personal care products like it does for food, so you might need to do a little digging. Knowledge is power, toots!
Certifications
We know that labels can be misleading, so what’s the best way to find products you can really trust? Certifications, baby! There are many options out there, such as EWG Verified, NSF Certified, Certified Vegan and Leaping Bunny Certified. You’ll come across a variety of logos and stamps of approval in your cruelty-free makeup search, so I encourage you to do your research and seek out the certifications that resonate with you most.
Please keep in mind that certifications can be cost-prohibitive, especially for new or smaller brands. If you don’t see the certification you’re looking for, consider asking the brand for more info about their practices. Any company worth its salt will be happy to fill you in. And you never know, maybe your feedback will motivate them to pursue a certification!
Supply chains
This is an issue that trips up many cruelty-free makeup connoisseurs, so it might come up for you as you learn more. Vetting brands can get really complicated when you take into account where they get their raw materials, because suppliers aren’t always required to adhere to the same standards as the brand itself.
But trying to trace every last ingredient in your cosmetics back to the source can be incredibly frustrating, so I don’t recommend it! The best thing you can do is stick with brands that offer plenty of info about their products. Trust me, companies that go the extra mile to ensure consistent standards across their supply chain want you to know about it. And you don’t have to rule out the rest—tell brands you love that you want more transparency. Your voice is powerful!
Trusted resources
You might be wondering how to keep track of all these details, not to mention how much research you’ll have to do next time you need new mascara! But don’t fret, dear one. This isn’t about knowing every DO and DON’T off the top of your head. Instead, the key is finding a trusted resource to help with some of the heavy lifting.
For me, that’s the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep Database. It contains hazard ratings for nearly 70,000 products and 9,000 ingredients on the market… Can you say wow? All you have to do is enter a new brand you’re considering or an ingredient you’ve never heard of in the search bar and ta da—the info you need to make conscious choices, at your fingertips!
Enjoy your cosmetics without compromise!
I shared a lot of info today, so give yourself time to process and learn more about the causes you care about most. And as you explore the world of cruelty-free makeup, please remember that your worth is not defined by your appearance. You are kind, smart, sensitive, loving and everything in between—that’s what matters. Have fun with your makeup but more importantly, have fun with your life!
Your turn: What’s your favorite cruelty-free makeup or personal care product? Or if you don’t have one yet, which brand from my list will you try?
Peace & conscious cosmetics,

Daytona Bike Week is presently in full-swing, so it’s probably a little late for you to make this year’s event. It’s entirely possible that won’t bother you. If you’re like me, events like Daytona often carry a pretty bad reputation in your mind – chauvinism of all kinds perpetuated by fat, old white guys. But after attending last year’s gathering, I’ve had something of a change of heart and now feel that every motorcyclist should attend an event like Daytona at least once.
TENUOUSLY LINKED: How to Save Motorcycling in 5 Easy Steps
Taking place in Daytona Beach, Florida, in early March, Daytona Bike Week is the unofficial opening of the riding season in the United States. Folks living in more northerly parts of the country will be looking at the snow outside their windows and feeling such a claim is a bit ambitious, but remember that there are a hell of a lot of Americans south of the Mason-Dixon line (and the imaginary line that continues west along the same latitude), and many of them are already wearing T-shirts. If it’s warm enough to play baseball, it’s warm enough to ride a motorbike.
Never mind the bikes; Daytona Beach is worth visiting just by itself.
Like many events of its type – eg, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Laconia Motorcycle Week – Daytona Bike Week started out as a racing event. Back in 1937, a handful of moto nuts got together to duke it out over 200 miles on a 3.2-mile course consisting of beach and public road. These days, the races are held at Daytona International Speedway. The firm-sanded beach, stretching in either direction as far as the eye can see, is now untroubled by motor vehicles.
‘It’s not just fat, old white guys.’
Roughly half a million people attend Daytona Bike Week each year. And last year, I was one of them. I came as a guest of Harley-Davidson, who flew me out to crash its Street Rod and watch the first contest of American Flat Track’s inaugural season. Despite the fact I ended up sliding across a Florida highway at 70 mph, the three days I spent at Daytona were amongst the highlights of 2017 for me.
RELATED: Popularity of Flat Track Booming: Can Indian, Harley Take Credit?
That’s not just because Harley knows how to do a press event. Or because I was able to wear short sleeves on St. Patrick’s Day for the first time since 2003. Or because I got to hang out with ultra-awesome moto-journalists like John Burns, Lemmy, “Goober” Joe Gustafson, and Ron Lieback. Though, certainly those things played a part. But one of the biggest reasons I look back at that event fondly is that it helped me to change – or, at least, adjust – some of my very negative opinions about motorcycle events like this and the people who attend them.
‘Merica, y’all
The fat, old white guys were there, of course – many wearing three-quarter helmets and ferrying their equally mature and generously proportioned wives on American-flag-festooned Gold Wings and Ultras. But, firstly, why are we hating on these folks? I mean, take a moment to think about the root cause of your anger toward fat, old white guys. Is it because they have committed the sin of aging? Is it because they have more money than you? Is it because they think differently than you in a country founded on the belief that people who think differently can still get along? Is it because they are of your parents’ generation? Is it because you can feel yourself turning into them?
And, of course, if you interact with these graybeards face to face you discover that, by and large, they’re pretty cool. OK, the “brother” stuff feels a bit affected, but, hey brother, are you really going to shit on somebody for trying to be nice to you? Fact is, these guys are bike nerds, just like you.
Carrying on from that thought, it occurs to me that events like these are the Comic-Cons of motorcycles. One of the clichéd criticisms waged against Daytona/Sturgis-type attendees is the assertion that they are all a bunch of dentists and accountants dressing up as land-pirate bad boys. Wandering around Daytona Beach, I suddenly thought: “Well, so what if they are? Who am I to judge?”
Spot the rogue Yamaha Super Ténéré in this sea of Harleys
I mean, FFS, y’all. I’m a sucker for the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, where I will straight-up dress like an actual pirate. Or sometimes a pirate in a kilt. Because that makes all kinds of sense. And it’s definitely 100-percent historically on-point with medieval times. And the Britishy accents that people put on at Ren Fest are totally believable, and all of it – turkey legs and cloaks and tankards of Schell’s and jousting – is representative of how I live my life 24/7. Or… ah… maybe not.
In making this comparison in my mind I realized I don’t have firm ground to stand on if I try to criticize someone who wants to pretend that he or she is tougher or more rebellious or wilder than their minivan and suburban ranch home might suggest.
Secondly, it’s not just fat, old white guys.
Main Street at night
Watching the impromptu parades that roll up and down Main Street each night, I saw a whole lot of young white guys, as well – only a few of which were fat. Most were riding sportbikes with New Jersey plates, wearing flat-brimmed baseball caps and transporting Jersey Shore-like girlfriends who were Snapchatting from the passenger seat. There were also black dudes – considerably more than I would have ever imagined, since I had thought events like this were all leather chaps and sexism. Many were riding the most amazing and cartoonish baggers you’ve ever seen: sparkle-painted, enormous-wheeled mobile pieces of art equipped with 300-watt stereos. Their bikes’ lung-rattling bass was outmatched only by the mobile music festivals that were the blinged-out Slingshots.
RELATED: Polaris Slingshot Adds Roof, Becomes Even Less Like a Motorcycle
Visiting the various events taking place around town I ran into genuine outlaw motorcycle clubs, motocrossers, hipsters, weirdos, scooter geeks, and every other kind of person who’s ever thrown a leg over a motorcycle. With all this spinning around me – this huge, ridiculous, and disjointed mess of humanity that had rolled into this spot beside the Atlantic Ocean – I couldn’t help but begin think: “Actually, this is kind of… cool.”
Maybe “cool” isn’t the exact word I want there. I mean, I’m not sure I would make an effort to go to Daytona Bike Week again, but I am so very glad I went at least once.
Even though I write and think about all kinds of different bikes every single day, I’ll admit I can get a little too lost in what I like. And then I can get a little too lost in thinking that because I like something it must be the right thing to like. Being at Daytona helped me correct my thinking. It was a chance to see and interact with hundreds of thousands of people who ostensibly share the same passion as me – motorcycles – while not necessarily sharing my exact vision of it. Being reminded of just how varied motorcycling really is made me appreciate it all the more.

A fine example of Busa brilliance
One of the highlights of large biker events is the opportunity to test ride all kinds of bikes.
Are Daytona Bike Week or Sturgis not really your kind of thing? You should probably still go at least once. Daytona Bike Week is presently in full-swing, so it's probably a little late for you to make this year's event.
