KlubOutside Q&A 301-400 [Translation]
Translated by @reikorun
Q301.
2022.03.07
The Medallions and the "Sankt Altar" used by His Majesty bore a striking resemblance to each other, is it correct to assume that the Medallions are the practical application of "Sankt Altar"?
A301.
That's correct.
Q302.
2022.03.07
Towards the end of the story, brush pens became used less frequently to express bloodshed compared to the early days, does this have something to do with your art style? I would love to know if there is a reason.
A302.
It became like that because I wanted to draw more detailed blood spray and flow.
Q303.
2022.03.14
What kind of technique is Ganju's "Seppa"? Considering the fact that it can directly interfere with matter and the fact that Ganju trained with Ginjō's group in the final arc, I anticipate that this is perhaps a technique closer to Fullbring.
A303.
He is using a technique passed down within the Shiba clan to unbind the union of Reishi particles thereby dividing the matter into pieces.

The boss-like characters that Ichigo has fought so far, that is, Byakuya, Aizen and Ginjō, all have colors contained within their names, but is there some color related connotation in Yhwach's name?
A304.
In the very early stages of development, Yhwach was given the pseudonym "Yhwach Beltz". Beltz means "black" in Basque.
Q305.

Is Renji's false Bankai "Hihiō Zabimaru" (*Baboon King), inspired by Minamoto no Yorimasa's slaying of the Nue? Renji subdued Zabimaru who is in the form of a Nue and attains the Bankai "Hihiō Zabimaru"; Minamoto No Yorimasa slays the Nue and is granted the famous sword Shishiō (*Lion King). I'm very interested in the pair because they both have these points in common: defeating the Nue and gaining the power (or weapon) called "~King". I would be happy if you could answer!
A305.
It's the first time I'm hearing of this legend. However the similarities are such that I'm not even surprised you would think it's the source. A sword with such a manga-like name exists….
Q306.

Orihime has a food scene in every arc. Examples:
Agent of the Shinigami arc - Red bean paste on a loaf of bread.
Soul Society arc - Meal at Kūkaku's residence.
Arrancar arc - Ice cream eaten with Rangiku and the meal that was almost shoved down her throat by Ulquiorra.
The Lost Agent of the Shinigami arc - Doughnuts.
Thousand-Year Blood War arc - Scrapped bread, some sweet potato-like food.
And more.
Were these eating scenes included to add to her character, or rather, perhaps I should ask if they naturally increased in number because Orihime came to life on her own as the story progressed? I love the scene where she cries while eating doughnuts in the Lost Agent arc.
A306.
I'm realizing that for the first time now that you've mentioned it. Come to think of it, Orihime eats well, huh…. Whenever I draw a food related scene, it is also the moment where I think to myself “I want a soft atmosphere in the dialogue and the scenery”, so I believe that's where Orihime fits in. Besides, it's kind of like, I don't really want to draw a scene where a man eats food, you know?
Q307.

Between Isshin and Masaki, who came up with the name "Ichigo"? My personal hypothesis is that he was born because Isshin protected "one thing = Masaki's life", and since Isshin would probably dislike the idea of his son bearing half of his own name, I reckon Masaki came up with it. However, if there is a definitive answer, I would love to know!
A307.
Masaki is the one who named him. For a long time, I was in two minds over whether or not I should draw Ichigo's naming scene, but I abandoned the idea because it would likely just be Isshin and Masaki getting all lovey-dovey and that's gross.
Q308.
2022.03.21
In my opinion, Ichigo is the most handsome Jump character of all time! From sensei's point of view, are there any protagonists that you think lead a cool lifestyle, or anyone you consider good-looking among the history of Jump protagonists?
A308.
I'm rarely enthused by the protagonist, so I don't have any protagonist in mind. I like Cygnus Hyoga. Somehow, I feel like I've mentioned this before….
Q309.
2022.03.28
If Grimmjow undergoes training, could he attain Resurrección: Segunda Etapa someday?
A309.
He can.
Q310.
2022.03.28
In chapter 2, Ichigo fights a Hollow in Yumisawa Children's Park, is there any connection between the name "Yumisawa" and the Quincy? From long ago, the Ishida family have resided in Karakura Town which is the Jūreichi. I wondered if there is a possibility that words relating to the Quincy are attached to place names? (*Yumisawa - 弓沢 includes the kanji for "bow" - 弓.)
A310.
Huh!? There is indeed a connection. That's uncanny! I'm surprised you noticed because I simply added that connection in the name while playing around with the background details and had no intention of mentioning it at all.
Q311.
2022.03.28
When it comes to something I don't like, but I have to get it done, I have a hard time getting started. What does sensei do at times like this?
A311.
I procrastinate until the very last minute, and when it finally becomes impossible to put off any longer, I'll start with just a little bit of the initial part and then leave it aside for later. Of course, I'm talking about my rough drafts.
Q312.

I thought the lines that Kajōmaru-san delivered were contrasting Captain Kyōraku's speech, but since Kajōmaru-san disappeared earlier than I expected, I've been contemplating the true meaning of his words this whole time. Did something happen in Kajōmaru-san's past?
A312.
Naturally, his lines are meant to correspond with Shunsui's lines, but it's the prelude made for the purpose of setting up Shunsui's speech which is the main message, so I had Kajōmaru say it as he was going to exit the stage early.

I've always thought to myself that if a BLEACH musō style game ever came out, it would probably be so much fun. Doesn't "Shinigami Musō" sound good??? Thank you for your time!!!
A313.
I love Hokuto Musō too, so I think it probably would be fun if there was one. Just imagine Aizen running out from the back of the screen in a 2-player setting whilst blowing away all the trash mobs!
Q314.
2022.04.04
Why did the Shin'ō Academy have its name changed from "Tōgakuin"? (Has their curriculum or philosophy changed?) ×[1]
A314.
Originally it was a school exclusively for Shinigami, however as organizations like the Kidō Corps and the Inner Court Troop were established and classified, the name changed.
Q315.

It's something that I just thought of right now, but is it possible that the Zanpakutō belonging to the early 13th Division were modeled after Pisces and its ruling planet Neptune? Captain Ukitake's Sōgyo no Kotowari may allude to the constellation of Pisces. It is a constellation in which the tails of two fish are tied together with a string (or ribbon), and Sōgyo no Kotowari also has the hilt of two swords linked together with a cord.
On the other hand, Kaien's Nejibana is a three-pronged spear. It is a symbol of Neptune (Poseidon in Greek), the god of the sea who rules over the planet Neptune.
I have a fair amount of confidence in this theory as there is too much overlap, but what do you think? Also, please let us know if there are any source materials or inspirations which formed the image of Captains and Vice-Captains (any others are fine too).
A315.
"Twin fish" is used to represent letters in Chinese literature, from there I kind of imagined it as "exchanging of letters" → "circulation of energy". About Kaien's sword, I suppose that comes from the mental image of combining the whirlpool of the Shiba clan and water from the twin fish. ×[2]

Sensei, can I use the photos you uploaded of your doggie for my phone's wallpaper?
A316.
You can.
Q317.
2022.04.11
I really sympathize with Quilge Opie's line "speech is silver, silence is golden", but I wonder if a line like this is based on sensei's actual experience?
A317.
This is originally a proverb from the English language.
Q318.

I watched Ōishi-sensei's birthday stream! I'm very happy because I was able to see characters from other works being drawn by Kubo-sensei and the process by which illustrations come to a state of completion in real time! Do you have any plans to stream it to your fan club or release a time-lapse? If you are so inclined, please do so!!
A318.
That is Ōishi-kun's YouTube project, so please make a request to Ōishi-kun! ×[3]
Q319.
2022.04.18
What does Honshō Chizuru-chan think about Orihime and Ichigo's marriage?
A319.
Since Chizuru is a free-spirited person, she would think "she got married, so what?"
Q320.
2022.04.18
Kubo-sensei also appeared in Ōishi-san's YouTube archive, I watched the hell out of it (an expression I rarely use these days….) The damask-patterned curtains behind Kubo-sensei were so chic that I took my hat off. What brand is it? I looked very closely at it, but I wonder if it's a front lace style where a damask-patterned lace curtain is hung in front of a thick curtain. I was interested because the curtains were beautiful.
A320.
I forgot the manufacturer but it does indeed have front lace. You're very observant…. ×[3]
Q321.
2022.04.25
When Byakuya fought PePe, he was never manipulated by Love Kiss even though he was struck by it. Is that because the mantle Byakuya was wearing is made of the Ōken.
A321.
That's right. That reminds me, there was no space to draw the reason there….
Q322.
2022.04.25
When the Soul King is first seen, he clearly appears to have limbs, when did you settle on the idea to have him limbless? Additionally, when Pernida Parnkgjas promptly dispatched the Second-Class Divine Soldier he was drawn with a normal left hand, so I don't think Pernida was set up to be the Left Arm of the Soul King at that time.
A322.
With respect to the set up I had in mind, it had been arranged so that normally, Pernida can maintain an imperfect humanoid form, but when they lose themself, they lose the ability to maintain their shape, thus revealing their true form (a left hand), but since it's difficult to understand, I'm thinking it's a concept I can probably do away with. Either way, I wanted to draw Pernida's hood tearing apart when they turn into a left hand.
Q323.
2022.04.25
I wish a Blu-ray box edition of the BLEACH anime would be offered for sale…they were available in the past…I'd like to have something similar to the DVD box which went up to the Soul Society arc….
A323.
I'll let my editor know. Murakoshi-saaan!
Q324.
2022.05.02
I apologize for bringing up the anime, but in the Zanpakutō: The Alternate Tale arc, among the Zanpakutō of the Captains and Vice-Captains whose names had already been established at the time, it was only Itegumo's incarnated form which did not make an appearance. Was this Kubo-sensei's intention? Or is it that the anime staff simply didn't come to you with an offer for Itegumo…?
A324.
Since I have no recollection of ever having met to discuss Itegumo, I think it's likely there were no plans for Itegumo.
Q325.
2022.05.02
What kind of person is Ikumi-san's husband? How old is he in your designs?
A325.
Ikumi-san is single in the main story, and she remarries in that space leading up to the Echoing Jaws of Hell arc.

Q326.
2022.05.02
Kubo-sensei, do you often reread the BLEACH tankōbon?
A326.
I usually don't read them at all, so I've almost forgotten everything. It's thanks to posting replies in this Q&A corner that with every round of questions I end up rereading the previous and subsequent tankōbon thoroughly.
Q327.
2022.05.09
Was it intentional that Aizen's origins and past are still largely undisclosed? I'd like to know because I often find myself thinking that there aren't many villains who possess that much charisma whose background remains unknown.
A327.
Most depictions of a villain's past are composed in order to draw out sympathy and a sense of relatability from the audience, and since I don't like that approach very much, I try to avoid it. All characters have a different set of values and I believe a villain is a character whose differences in that regard are so large that they cannot be accepted.
Q328.
2022.05.09
I was always watching out for this with bated breath, but I wonder if the reason Rangiku's breasts don't spill out from her Shihakushō is because she's holding them in place with Reiatsu? Did she actually have a nip slip once where nobody was watching? I'm curious if the reason why her chest is so widely exposed is because they cause her pain or perhaps it's a 'freebie' for others. I love how sexy her chest is.
A328.
I was drawing her with the assumption that she would affix double sided tape to her chest, but I like the idea of her holding them in place with Reiatsu better. Maybe I should use it.
Q329.
2022.05.09
I was surprised to learn that Kubo-sensei's hometown is the very town where I currently live and work (I felt a strong sense of familiarity at the mention of Soleil). So here's my question: roughly where in Karakura Town is the Visored's base located?
A329:
The Visored's hideout is around Spark (the name of a supermarket). I wonder if Spark is still there…?
Q330.
2022.05.16
The 7th volume with Byakuya on the cover begins with the line “We should not shed tears”, but at the time Kubo-sensei wrote this poem, did you already have an image in your head of chapter 502, "Falling Sakura" (where Byakuya is defeated by the enemy and sheds tears)?
A330.
I had no way of knowing where Jump would tell me to end the series, so it's not the exact version I had in mind back then, but I wrote it based on the idea that the tears would eventually be shed.
Q331.
2022.05.16
I would like to know how Yoruichi transforms into a cat. Is it a technique she herself had developed, is she able to shapeshift using a spiritual tool belonging to the Shihōin clan, or perhaps a device or technique developed by Urahara Kisuke? These are the only methods I can think of.
A331.
This is a technique developed by Yoruichi, for the purpose of sneaking out of the mansion whenever she pleases.
Q332.
2022.05.16
Have you ever tried Ayataka Café Matcha Latte? It's extremely popular and delicious.
A332.
Matcha based sweets aren't really my thing.
Q333.
2022.05.23
Where on Earth did Renji get that snazzy shirt with the Zabimaru-like design which he was wearing in the Human World in the final chapter? Was it custom made for Renji?
A333.
It's custom made. That t-shirt is nice isn't it?
Q334.
2022.05.23
On the Squad 10 introduction page in BLEACH 13 BLADEs, it says "Rangiku narrowly avoided having her Bankai stolen", has Rangiku acquired Bankai?
A334.
That's what is actually written there!? It's a mistake. How in the world did a mistake like this get in there…?
Q335.
2022.05.23
I have a question about the Shikai of Komamura's Zanpakutō "Tenken". When looking at the games and the anime, it seems there are two patterns in Tenken's Shikai ability: one where it partially summons Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō and does battle with its arm and sword, and another pattern where it accompanies Komamura's attacks with a mass of sword energy (?) that looks like an enlarged version of his own arm and sword. Which one is considered correct by Kubo-sensei?
A335.
"Summoning the arm of Myō'ō" is correct.
Q336.
2022.05.30
Regarding the resident certificate which is given as a bonus for joining this FC, I was surprised to see that Hueco Mundo was an option. Even in Hueco Mundo there are resident certificates…are there any public offices and such that manage it? If so, did Aizen establish and maintain it? These are the questions I thought about but I'd like to know sensei's opinion!
A336.
You might be able to tell by looking at the signatures, but Harribel is in charge of it and Hueco Mundo has started to become organized after Harribel began ruling.
Q337.
2022.05.30
You mentioned Momoclo in a previous Bambies related question, do you have any favorite idols and such? Did you happen to like Hinatazaka46 through Love it!? Is there someone you're rooting for?
A337.
When I see idols who were season regulars on Love it! appearing in other shows, I naturally start rooting for them. (*Love it! is a variety show in Japan.)
Q338.
2022.05.30
During the new captain's appointment ceremony in volume 74, Nanao-chan, who served as the host, is seen carrying a cane, was this an aftereffect of her fight with Lille? In the same volume, just a few pages before (the scene where she goes outside to call for Captain Kyōraku), it looks like she didn't have a cane, so I was wondering what the true situation is.
A338.
That's right. Either I forgot to draw it in the scene where she calls out to Shunsui or the detail ended up getting lost in the solid paint fill.
Q339.
2022.06.06
Is the reason why Ichigo's Bankai could not be stolen with a medallion because Ichigo's Bankai was mixed with Hollow power?
A339.
Correct.
Q340.
2022.06.06
You served as a judge for the Jump Gag Manga Awards, and I got the impression that there is a high percentage of gag manga among the works you find interesting, but do you have any plans or desire to draw your own gag manga?
A340.
When it comes to me, I just don't have the talent to draw gag manga, so I won't draw it. Gag manga are challenging works and only a select few can draw them.
Q341.
2022.06.06
About the color illustration from chapter 558 (depicting Ichigo and Renji inside a white coffin with a cross on it), it appears to bear a close resemblance to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" music video, is there any connection?
A341.
I drew the white coffin design quite a long time ago and when I saw the Bad Romance music video, I recall being rather indecisive about what I should draw because Bad Romance was released first. Ultimately, I ended up drawing it after some time had passed. That being said, the music video for Bad Romance was incredibly cool.
Q342.
2022.06.13
When the anime commences, will there be a BLEACH game released following Soul Ignition? Not so much an app or something but for game consoles….
A342.
I feel like I heard some rumor like that from my editor….
Q343.
2022.06.13
If the Quincy trace bloodlines, I think Uryū would notice that an Echt Quincy called "Kurosaki" existed until recently, but were there any documents, family trees, etc. compiled by Sōken? If so, did Uryū sense something extraordinary after being admitted to Karakura High school, in particular towards the fact that it was a human with the surname "Kurosaki" who possessed the high Reiatsu?
A343.
Books concerning the Quincy are kept in a locked archive inside the hospital. Uryū is forbidden from going there, nor does Uryū himself want to enter that place so much that he would go to the trouble of fighting with Ryūken. Additionally, the more important books are kept in Ryūken's private room.
Q344.
2022.06.13
I've been wondering about this for a while, but in the color version, Liltotto's clothes in her earlier appearances had long sleeves, is this something that was simply overlooked during your checks? Don't the Sternritter only conform to one style of clothing?
A344.
Really!? I had no idea because I wasn't asked to check that. Her outfit was always sleeveless.
Q345.
2022.06.20
I read on the internet that the heroine of BLEACH, Inoue Orihime, is modeled after Inoue Mayuko from Ushio & Tora. Is that true? Is it also the case that Tatsuki was modeled after Asako?
A345.
I'm not exactly familiar with Ushio and Tora…. Please check for yourself whether it's mentioned in any official statement anyway.
Q346.
2022.06.20
Is it possible for fellow Hollows to make children?
A346.
It's possible.
Q347.
2022.06.20
I was thinking that the "B" and "H" from Jugo and Bazz-B's Schrift are the letters which form each other's names, was this giving us a hint that these two were best friends?
A347.
Of course.
Q348.
2022.06.27
I want Hollow and Dragon figurines!!! Are there any plans to turn them into figurines? Where can I request one to be made for me? I want to line up all the Märchens!!!!!!!
A348.
Is this question based on the premise that I draw all the Märchens!?
Q349.
2022.06.27
Will the effect of Wabisuke's ability be lifted if the Shikai is disengaged?
A349.
It will be lifted.
Q350.
2022.06.27
When Shinigami engage their Shikai, sometimes It will be unleashed by calling the sword's name despite not uttering the release command, is there any difference between this and a situation where they do recite the release command in full? Just like how only those who have acquired Bankai are able to release their Shikai without calling the name itself, perhaps it's not the case that just anyone can do this?
A350.
Only experts can release Shikai without the release command, and even if they can, it will take time for its efficiency to reach 100% after the release.
Q351.
2022.07.04
If members of the Visored have theme songs, please tell us about them!!
A351.
Oh yeah, I guess I've never made a note of that. I'll write about them somewhere!
Q352.
2022.07.04
Please tell us what your favorite BLEACH movie is!
A352.
I like the Ulquiorra fight at the beginning of Hell Verse.
Q353.
2022.07.04
Is the healing ointment that comes out of Ikkaku's sword an original ability of the Zanpakutō rather than something that was added through modification? When I did some investigating, I learned that the Hōzuki plant was used as a medicinal herb in the past, so I thought, maybe?
A353.
It's Hōzukimaru's ability.
Q354.
2022.07.11
I have received my certificate of residence, thank you very much. Did you also inspect the packaging envelope? I have never seen such a stylish parcel before, I was totally blown away…. I'm truly happy that I was immersed in this universe even before opening my package.
A354.
I did inspect it. Isn't the design great? The certificate of residence is also the outstanding handiwork of Ishino-san who has been involved with BLEACH for a long time.
Q355.
2022.07.11
Will the birthdays of the Sternritter members be made public in the future?
A355.
Perhaps it will be revealed in the anime, I can't say for sure.
Q356.
2022.07.11
In an illustration previously exhibited at the Reverse Shibuya event, Rickenbacker was listed as a Broombuggy. His appearance is quite different compared to Marshall and Wordsworth, does this mean that all Dragons people ride are considered Broombuggies?
A356.
Broombuggy is the name of a Dragon species while simultaneously being something like a model number used for Wing Bind registration, so if an individual brings along their own Dragon and it passes the test, they can register it as a Broombuggy.
Q357.
2022.07.18
When designing a female character, how is the bust size determined?
A357.
It's not so much choosing a bust size, but rather it's more like deciding on the overall fleshiness of the character and then making it a size that suits.
Q358.
2022.07.18
The new BLEACH work looks so interesting, I could barely contain my excitement!!! I couldn't help but wonder if there's something hidden in the title, like in BURN THE WITCH, is the missing horizontal bar on the "A" in "BREATHES" simply a design choice? Or does it have some kind of meaning? Please give us a hint!
A358.
I was just playing around with a design for the rough draft and I didn't even really communicate this detail to my editor, but the design more or less gives the impression that the "bolts of Hell have come loose.”
Tumblr media
Q359.
2022.07.18
In the one-shot, there are records adorning a whole surface of the wall in the 5th Division barracks, are those all Hirako's personal belongings?
A359.
That's right.
Q360.
2022.07.25
I read the new BLEACH one-shot. The individuality of each person very much stands out, even down to things like their Captain's haori, has the change in Captain-Commander resulted in a more lenient dress code, personal grooming and so on?
A360.
It's definitely become more lenient. I mean, the Captain-Commander is Shunsui so….
Q361.
2022.07.25
With regard to Captain Unohana's name, was it intentional that by giving her the name "Retsu (烈)", the kanji for "death (死)" can be constructed when parts of her name are combined? Also, if the aforementioned is true, is there a possibility that the details surrounding characters’ naming will be revealed in a future one-shot sequel?
A361.
If "Hana (花)" and "Retsu (列)" are cut in two and then connected together, the result is "death (死)". It was intentional, or perhaps I should say, I did it out of fun but it turned out right. If someone correctly guesses the wordplay in the naming like this, then I may acknowledge it, but I don't think I should be the one to reveal it.
Q362.
2022.07.25
Is the BLEACH one-shot drawn entirely with traditional art mediums? There were some parts here and there that looked like it could be digital, did you use both?
A362.
Illustrations of characters, illustrations of animals, visual effects and lettering for sound effects were all made using traditional art mediums, Anything outside of that is digital.
Q363.
2022.08.01
New Vice-Captain, Rindō, has made an appearance, but where did Vice-Captain Iemura go?
A363.
Given that Atau's abilities were superior, Iemura voluntarily made an application for himself and was demoted to 3rd seat. Even though Iemura was the one to raise the matter of his own accord, he was so depressed that Hanatarō, unable to look on in silence, summoned him back to the 4th Division where he was reinstated. In the end, it seems that the 4th Division, which has a lot of paperwork, is more suited for Iemura.
Q364.
2022.08.01
I read the one-shot! I was like "this is iiiit!" for the first time in a long while and it gave me goosebumps…. Is this strictly a one-shot, will there not be a continuation…? I would definitely like to read the rest!
A364.
I'm not good at drawing when I'm being told to “draw, draw, draw” repeatedly, so I'll consider it once I'm no longer being told to do so.
Q365.
2022.08.01
Was the color spread in the 20th anniversary chapter, drawn digitally?
A365.
The coloring is digital.
Q366.
2022.08.08
How does Ichika perceive Yumichika's gender? We live in a time where gender is a difficult issue, but I'd like to see a scene unfold where he's like "I'm a man" and Ichika goes "what!?"
A366.
She already knew he's a man from the start.
Q367.

In chapter 188, when Isshin-san regained his Shinigami powers for the first time in 20 years, he referred to the Visored in his conversation with Urahara-san. During this scene, Urahara-san who had helped to contain their Hollowfication, acted as though he possessed no detailed information concerning their backgrounds or ideology. Was this information simply not revealed to Isshin-san and nothing more? Or is it that he truly had no idea what the Visored were planning at that time because he hadn't been involved with them since The Past arc, among other things?
A367.
This is because he concluded that there would be more of a benefit towards the management of Ichigo's Hollowfication if he did not divulge that information to Isshin.

I like the sound of Aaroniero Arruruerie's name. What is the origin of this name?
A368.
It's based on the designer Eero Aarnio.

I have a question concerning the phrase "Fill the earth and know your own powerlessness" in Kurohitsugi's chant. In the book of Genesis, after creating man (in the sense that man is the greatest thing ever created), the word of God states “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it." Are the words in the Kurohitsugi incantation modeled after this?
A369.
It's not the case that I used Genesis as a model, though Kurohitsugi's chant itself becomes a chant that speaks about all humanity.

In the new one-shot, Ichigo goes to Keigo's ramen shop and says "everyone came out to eat", but who exactly does he mean by "everyone"? Who else was there besides Mizuiro? Was Chad also with them
A370.
The one in the seat at the back is Uryū.
Q371.

I love Dordoni, so I'd like if you could draw him a lot more.
A371.
Now that you mention it, I forgot to draw new pieces for Dordoni and his group for the art exhibition….
Q372.
2022.08.22
In the new one-shot, Ichika calls Renji "Tō-sama (*father)", but what does she call Byakuya?
A372.
"Oji-sama (*uncle)"
Q373.

Sensei, have you ever seen derivative creations (fanfiction, dōjinshi, etc.) of your own work? Also, what do you think about such creations?
A373.
As long as the fans can find enjoyment in it with one another, they can go right ahead. Please send me male-oriented erotica. Because I read it.
Q374.
2022.08.22
I love the background music from the anime and movies and I listen to them often, was sensei also involved in the music selection?
A374.
It doesn't involve me. This is not because I'm not interested, but because I'm fond of Sagisu-san's work.
Q375.

Aside from nobles, do seated officers live on the road to the seated officers' quarters? Do they live in detached housing?
A375.
Most of them do.

I was incredibly impressed after watching the video of you drawing on KlubOutside! Are you using a tracing lightbox from Bears.Seven? And is it being stabilized by the horizontal pipe behind it? Also, if you don't mind, I would be grateful if you could tell us what's going on with the space on both sides of the tracing lightbox!
A376.
I ended up buying a new ultra-thin tracing lightbox over and over again until I found one that I liked, I forgot the manufacturer's name. I'd be in trouble if it broke…. The space on both sides is chaotically littered with things.

Regarding Kyōraku-san's Bankai, Katen Kyōkotsu: Karamatsu Shinjū, if the opponent doesn't put up a resistance (that is, try to rise to the surface) at the Third Act: Dangyo no Fuchi, does it not transition to the Final Act? The story goes that "having resigned themselves to their fate, they hurl themselves", so I thought that if the opponent accepted it, then it would become a lovers' suicide just as the name suggests.
A377.
Not limited to the Third Act, If an opponent dies midway through, it is assumed that the "performer has disappeared", and thus the Act ends there.
Q378.

When I look at sensei's work, the lines appear to be much bolder in the early stages, are your lines something you paid more attention to as a consequence or did you have a change of mind regarding this area? Or perhaps you merely changed your pen?
A378.
The lines became thinner for two reasons: for one, with that early method of drawing, the lines would come out too thick when printed in the magazine, secondly I gained more experience with a pen and it reached a point where I was able to draw faster.
Q379.
2022.09.05
Do you like robots? You are great at creating characters, creatures and fantasy. Someday, I would like to see a robot designed by sensei.
A379.
I'm not interested in robots right now so I don't think I'd be able to compose a good design.
Q380.
2022.09.05
After I saw Ichika, there's something I've been wondering about: what is the growth rate of a Shinigami like in terms of physical age? Does the growth rate eventually come to slow down as the physical body develops in age?
A380.
I'll probably write about this in a Fanbook.
Q381.
2022.09.12
Japanese translations of the chapter subtitles were printed in the Fanbooks, but are there any plans to publish the rest somewhere?
A381.
It was difficult to check them so I don't really want to do it….
Q382.

How tall is Tōshirō at present, in cm? Has there been any change from 133 cm…?
A382.
He's 134 cm now.

2022.09.12
When you were composing your designs for New Sakura Wars, did you decide on the framework of each character? I'm especially curious about Anastasia.
A383.
For Sakura Wars, the request came in with everything already decided down to the names, settings, personality, body type, hairstyles, colors and role, so my job was to draw the actual design of the character using my own art style, that's all there was to it. It's almost like "putting makeup on someone else's child “
Q384.
2022.09.19
Kazui's room made an appearance in the one-shot, what made an impression on me is the fact that it wasn't a children's study desk or the like which adorned the place, but instead it was very simple furniture. Is there some reason for that?
A384.
It's to Ichigo's taste.

I would like to know what foods Kisuke-san likes and what food he dislikes…. If there are any changes between the time he was a Captain and the time he became "Hat-and-Clogs", I'd definitely like to hear about both of those eras….
A385.
His favorite food is rice and the food he dislikes are too many to list. While we're on the subject, Yoruichi has no likes or dislikes at all when it comes to food.
Q386.
2022.09.19
Who came up with the title "WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU"?
A386.
I did.
Q387.
2022.09.26
Is it possible that Engetsu was not originally Isshin's Zanpakutō, but instead a Zanpakutō that once belonged to another Shinigami, like for instance, someone among the Five Great Noble Clans? I was wondering if the reason why no Shinigami connected the dots between Isshin and the Getsuga Tenshō used by Ichigo, was because they recognized Engetsu as a fire type Zanpakutō and were unaware of its ability i.e. "Getsuga Tenshō which gathers Reiatsu into a slashing attack"?
A387.
There are three reasons why the other Shinigami were not reminded of Isshin through witnessing Ichigo's Getsuga Tenshō:
Unlike the one used by Ichigo, Isshin's Getsuga Tenshō is a technique that gathers fire and Reiatsu into a slashing attack which is used at close range.
There are no opportunities for fellow Captains to learn each other's technique names outside of fighting together and training together.
In the Soul Society arc, Ichigo doesn't mention the name Getsuga Tenshō in front of anyone but Byakuya.
Q388.
2022.09.26
A long time ago on a certain program, Morita-san, who plays the role of Ichigo, mentioned how Kubo-sensei had pointed out to him the correct intonation of Getsuga Tenshō back in the early days. Did Kubo-sensei check the intonation of characters' spoken lines and techniques in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, which were implemented in Brave Souls but have yet to make an appearance in the anime?
A388.
I may not be able to check as far as the finer details for Brave Souls. For the new anime on the other hand, I spent several hours discussing and checking as many new names and vocabulary as possible. As long as I haven't missed anything in my checks, it should turn out great.
Q389.
2022.09.26
I would like to learn the particulars of how Shutara Senjumaru got promoted to the Zero Division. What did she (is it a she?) create? At first I thought it might be the Shihakushō, but I can't imagine that a Shihakushō is important enough to warrant a promotion to Zero Division, so I'm thinking it's probably something else.
A389.
It's the Shihakushō.
Q390.

I would like to know how Abarai Ichika-chan rates her father's eyebrows!

She thinks they're the coolest shape in the whole world.

Does Kubo-sensei have a Kanken certificate? (*Japan Kanji Aptitude Test)
A391.
I don't have one.
Q392.
2022.10.03
What is the motive behind Kyōraku Shunsui choosing Yadōmaru Lisa as his Vice-Captain? I'm also intrigued by their relationship. When Kyōraku and Lisa reunite again during the Decisive Battle of Karakura in the anime, Lisa strikes him violently as if in greeting, Kyōraku then says something like "you're looking as cute as ever" and Lisa blushes in response. I'm curious because I think this would never have happened if Lisa wasn't conscious of Kyōraku in some way or the other.
A392.
This is one of those scenes where the checks didn't come to me.
Q393.
2022.10.10
I really love the well-built and good-looking mature men that Kubo-sensei draws, but I was curious about specific areas of the face or body where you exert the most effort when drawing these characters. If I have to pick one character, I would be very happy if you could tell me something about Zaraki Kenpachi.
A393.
All the characters are different in terms of what aspect I pay extra attention to, in Kenpachi's case, I imagine him with "dry-looking, tense muscles on a thin figure with prominent bones.”
Q394.
2022.10.10
Not long after assuming her position as Captain of the 8th Division, Yadōmaru Lisa is seen wearing a Captain's haori which had long sleeves (in the illustration from the novel "WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU" Lisa can be seen wearing what looks to be a haori with sleeves.) However, in the one-shot, it became a sleeveless Captain's haori. Did she have it altered to sleeveless or does she switch between two garments depending on her mood that day?
A394.
Immediately following that, Lisa used the haori Shunsui used to wear after cutting down the length of the sleeves.
Q395.
2022.10.10
The Seireiheki ordinarily protects the Soul King Palace, but do the gatekeepers of the Seireimon also normally protect the Soul King Palace?
A395.
I'll write about this here because it's probably not a piece of lore I'll ever draw, but the areas bordering the edges of the street around where the gates fall have come to be named "Marumaru-mon", they stand guard over the vicinity of those areas. ×[4]
Q396.
2022.10.17
Sensei, how many layers do you divide your work into when drawing an illustration digitally? If possible, I would also like to see a making-of video of your drawing process!
A396.
The number of layers depends on the illustration. All of the original color drawings from the BLEACH exhibition are still available as time-lapses, so I hope they can be viewed somewhere.
Q397.
2022.10.17
Kazeshini's chains appear to be expandable, but how does it shrink back after it has been expanded?
A397.
Shūhei does his best to shrink them back.
Q398.
2022.10.17
Given that Shawlong is the No.11 Arrancar, does that mean he was the first Menos among Aizen's forces to be turned into an Arrancar? In that case, why did Aizen choose him as the first test subject?
A398.
That's because Shawlong himself advised Aizen to try it on him first.
Q399.
2022.10.24
If Moguro Fukuzō from the "The Laughing Salesman" were in the world of BLEACH, who do you reckon would be the character that would likely be targeted by Moguro Fukuzō to have their souls filled?
A399.
Let me see, I wonder who… Shūhei…?
Q400.
2022.10.24
According to Ulquiorra's monologue, it seems that the fully Hollowfied Ichigo had used Sonído which is Hohō for Arrancar. In The Past arc from volume 36, it appears as though Kensei, who had progressed in Hollowfication, also utilized Sonído in the same way when he instantly moved behind Rabu. Could this be an indication that as a Shinigami's Hollowfication spreads from a state of being the mask alone to one where it affects the whole body, their existence grows closer to an Arrancar?
A400.
Correct.
Translation Footnotes:
×1. The "Shinigami Tōgakuin" is a name which appears in Souls character book, page 99. This is the name that is still most commonly used in Rukongai to refer to the Academy.
×2. Kubo is referring to Han-dynasty poems and legends, most notably: Ballad of Watering Horses in a Ditch by the Great Wall. Fish is used as a metaphor for letters sent by families far away as people would place their message in a wooden receptacle shaped like a fish. This receptacle would open down the middle thus becoming "two carp":
From a far land a traveler came and left me two carp. I asked my children to cook the fish and inside they found a silk letter. I knelt long and read the letter. What did that letter say? It started, Try to eat. and ended, I miss you always.
×3. Kōji Ōishi's Birthday stream featuring Tite Kubo:
https://www.youtube.com/live/nTwRin6T3VA?si=TmtttpxOOAdWnRLa
×4. Please note: "Mon" means gate but "Marumaru" is not really a name, marumaru is a symbol (○○) which we use as placeholders when, for instance, there is no name. So it's essentially like saying "such and such gate” until the named gate actually falls and replaces that placeholder.

After watching episode 7 of the new anime something has been bothering me. In the past you have talked about Ichigo's relationship with Yoruichi and from a realistic stand point she's not even his sensei let alone romantic or familial they're just mere acquaintances from a realistic stand point to which I agree fans over blow their bond. So then what's the deal with soul society then? Ichigo (realistically) has even LESS acquaintance with them then the urahara gang minus renji and rukia yet the man acts like soul society is equal to his family. I never understood this love affair Ichigo has with the shinigami. It's so forced that it has always taken away from the plot and made Ichigo's motivations for fighting in the war hollow it even feels like he declares allegiance to them in the soul kings palace rather then humanity. Technically Ichigo has more of a bond with Urahara or Yoruichi yet treats THEM more like acquaintances then his "friends from soul society." Why do you think that is? Thanks
I think it's three things?
The first thing is that it's made pretty clear early on in Bleach (like the first 50 chapters) that as much as they bicker, Ichigo really vibes with Rukia's ethos on a deeply personal level. They also care for each other a lot, in whatever way one wants to imagine that is manifested, which is why both the live action and the musical heavily focused on their interactions and feelings, as does Kubo's own poetry and art (like the "I will pass through even 100 million blades!" spread).
Rukia is the archetypal Shinigami to Ichigo. He even wields Sode no Shirayuki until Byakuya breaks it. (Yes, his first sword is just an oversized Sode no Shirayuki; he's using Rukia's powers and her zanpakutō.) This is interesting because Rukia's mindset is very atypical for Shinigami as a whole, but Ichigo essentially acts like Rukia vouches for everyone else in the Gotei 13. They're good enough for her, so they're good enough for him.
The second thing is that Ichigo has this whole combat empathy character ability thing going on where he bonds with people through fighting them. He claims to be terrible at remembering names and faces but he easily remembers and acts super familiar with every Shinigami he fights (Renji, Ikkaku, Byakuya, and Kenpachi). He feels sympathy for Aizen at the end on that basis. He acts very casually with Ganju and Kisuke. Perhaps most notably, he identifies with Uryū a lot more than Orihime and Chad, because he only comes into more direct conflict with Uryū.
The exceptions are Yumichika, Rangiku, and Tōshirō, whom he's ostensibly familiar with from the week spent in Soul Society after Aizen flees, as he doesn't interact with them much (or at all for the latter two) during SS arc. The two he only sort of tussles with are Gin and Yoruichi, and unsurprisingly, his attitude is still fairly guarded around both of them.
Basically the result of this seems to be that he feels he gets the Shinigami in a deeper way than his human peers. Ichigo is not really particularly good at identifying with people his own age no matter how much shared experience he has with them (like Tatsuki).
The third thing is, like Karin, he hates feeling like a burden or imposition. That means keeping his human friends in the dark, because they can't do anything. That means not bothering Kisuke, because he's presumably working on big brain answers. That means not bothering Yoruichi, because she just radiates intense adult energy. (See also: Ikumi lecturing him on relying on adults.) This means not bothering Isshin. And so on, and so forth. The various Shinigami, he views as "peers" whom he isn't burdening, because they can more or less keep up, and yet they don't really register as authority figure adults to him. It seems like in his mind, they're his battle bros.
Between these three things, I don't think he does have more of a bond with Yoruichi or Kisuke than the Gotei 13 members he kinda knows. He says stuff like, "I'm not one of you, I am a Shinigami!" to Shinji because he really does feel that way. They're just his people as far as he's concerned. He vibes with them.

Soul Society Tattoo Artist AU Meta That No One Asked For: Who Killed Kaien Shiba?
So, you may have noticed Kuukaku and Ganju making an appearance in my most recent Soul Society Tattoo Artist AU comic. That was pretty much planned from the beginning, along with the next one, where they end up doing Renji a pretty significant solid, which got me thinking, how did Kaien’s death play out in this universe, and what role did (or didn’t) Rukia play in it?
See, the fanfic part of this AU (which I know you haven’t seen yet, I’m working on it) opens with Rukia trying to get a dirtbaggy tattoo to piss off Byakuya. Unlike canon Rukia, who entered the Academy barely literate and scrabbling to figure out social norms, this Rukia was adopted by Byakuya as a child, and raised with all the personal attention and high expectations that Byakuya would have given to the younger sibling he never had. Rukia is basically the star of the Academy, and Byakuya already has her twenty year plan to Squad Six vice-captain all mapped out. Except... Rukia’s doesn’t sit comfortably in her nobility. She doesn’t want to uphold the honor of Soul Society and drink fancy wine, she wants to protect people and do good. Mostly, she wants to join Squad 5 with her friends (lolololololol).
Meeting Renji is a seismic shift for her-- she’s never met another person who questioned their own duty to society as much as she has, and through her association with him, she comes to realize that just because she doesn’t like her privilege doesn’t mean she should try to discard it. So, she ends up joining Squad 6 after all, with the goal of bringing a sense of social consciousness to the elites of the Gotei.
I had all of this figured out, pretty much off the bat, but it raised a couple of questions, namely 1) how does Rukia end up on the Living World mission where she meets Ichigo, and 2) who went with Ukitake to witness Kaien losing his fight with Metastacia? What if, I said to myself, what if the answer to #2 was...no one. Ukitake is an immensely strong and ancient captain, and I think that he could have taken Kaien/Metastacia down, but at great cost to his health.
This entire incident is an enormous blow for Squad 13. They’ve lost their Lieutenant and Third Seat, as well as the entire unit that was slaughtered by Metastacia (it’s unclear how many people this represents, but in the anime Metastacia-possessing-Miyako goes through the squad a murders a significant number of people as well). Their captain is effectively disabled for who-knows-how-long. There is hushed talk that Ukitake is going to be replaced (but by who??) or Squad 13 possibly even disbanded. The squad is roundly seen as bad luck, and people are filing transfer requests right and left.
I’ve always headcanoned Ukitake as a family friend of the Kuchiki, and I can especially see him and Hisana getting along. I think Byakuya would have been friendlier with Kaien and Miyako as well (I always make Byakuya 1000% more friendly with everyone in AUs where his wife doesn’t die...which still basically only brings him up to “will tolerate their presence at dinner parties” but anything is an improvement) and I think Rukia may still have done a bit of training with Kaien, since elemental swords run in the Shiba family.
Rukia, who at this point is Third Seat at the Sixth, and basically shadowing Shirogane in the interest of replacing him, decides she can’t allow this to stand, and begs Byakuya to allow her to transfer to the 13th in order to help hold things together until Ukitake can get back on his feet. More than anything else, this has huge symbolic value: the Kuchiki princess and Byakuya’s personal protégé, delaying her own vice-captain’s exam to go do the paperwork of three people at a squad that’s in shambles, because that’s how important she thinks Captain Ukitake is.
It works, it stops the hemorrhaging. Byakuya doesn’t like it, but he and Rukia have come to an understanding that her continued role as stand-in Kuchiki heir hinges on him respecting the things she feels she needs to do. She also ends up taking quarters at the Thirteen, which allows her to get some degree of freedom and also allows her the chance to surreptitiously spend some time in Rukongai with Renji, which is good, because she’s so busy now that she’d hardly get to see him otherwise. (Renji, for his part, is extremely proud and supportive of her choice)
When the comics part of the story picks up, Ukitake is doing much better. Rukia has passed her vice-captain’s exam and is on the cusp of transferring back to the Sixth. Ukitake wishes like Hell he could keep her, but he knows Byakuya has been patient enough. Just for old times, he decides to send Rukia on one last deployment, just a few weeks in the World of the Living, since that’s a thing she’s not likely to get to do once she’s an assistant captain. After all, what could go wrong?

favorite things about my boy Ichigo, lets go:
- wants to protect a mountainload of people; protects a mountainload of people over the course of the series
- momma's boy, loves his baby sisters, Respects Women(TM).
- he's so kind???? he gives bread to that one nameless shinigami kid bc he was tired, he convinces grimmjow not to die so that they can fight each other again (this one was actually hilarious), he heals ikkaku after fighting him, puts up with soul society's bullshit, is tender(tm) with Nel even after finding out she’s with the arrancars, gives kon a chance at life even though literally no one asked him to
- he's smart. he's good at thinking on his feet and using his resources to put up a good fight. When he remembered uryu's advice and tugged on the red string? When he got bankai? When he noticed Renji's little trick during their fight in the SS arc? When he figured Gin's sword out like 2 seconds in after fighting him? Chefs kiss sir
- he's so good to his friends!!!! he meets rukia and he's like "this shortcake will be my new best friend and I will commit treason for her." He met Chad and was like "i will fight for the sake of this Big Peaceful Bro forever." He met Ishida and was like "he is a pompous asshole and a Rival but he is shaped ambiguously and suspiciously in the form of a begrudging friend." He met Orihime and he was like "I will willingly invade enemy territory for this cinnamon roll-shaped human bean and take six shots of cero to the chest for her" and he just??? fucking did it?? he loves his friends so much what a dork
- easily distracted; will fight ganju bc ganju got on his nerves. will fight a worm if it looks at him the wrong way. will fight god.  has fought god.
- Great zanpakuto-shinigami relationship with Zangetsu tbh.
- is a good boy despite the Trauma

Ichigo sighed, feeling helpless. He does worry about not only his safety, but Alexandra’s. He wanted to prevent her from this, but here she is, stuck in his drama.
Sighing, he asked, “where is Alexandra? Is she okay?”
“Didn’t I say shut it?” Renji barked, banging on his cell, “and if you must know, our men probably have her and put her in a cell elsewhere. You and your little friend will face trial.”
“Let her go! She did nothing wrong! It’s all me!”
“Didn’t I say shut it?” Renji banged on the cell again, hurting Ichigo’s ears. “Tell all that to the jury.”
Ichigo’s anger is getting the best of him, his hands clenching into fist. He felt so helpless. His powers were little to nothing. He can’t even fight back here.
Sighing, he sits on the ground and hopes Alexandra is okay.
She needs to be okay.
—Ichigo
"Again!"
" Manus Ignis!" Fire spewed from the love witch's hand, covering the dummies in a powerful, almost pink colored flame. Suddenly all of her goes pink and her long burette hair turns into a shimmering gold. Her eyes are white and icy as she transforms the fire into a staff.
Kukaku smiled over to her brother Ganju. " I think she's almost ready. She has control over all the forms. Flames, water, thunder, wind, and stone. "
Meanwhile inside the soul society, a mysterious figure lurked. " Is the Soul reaper here?" It asks as the shadow morphs into that of a man with poofy curly hair in a short hair style, heavy make up, and a sword at his hip. " Yes, he is here." The 12th captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi replies. " Get him out. I want his power. His hollow power." The man responds with drool coming out of the corners of his mouth.
Ichigo is quickly taken from his cell. " Get off of me, what the hell is going on here!"
Rukia scoffs at him. " You're about to meet the great one." She responds, almost as if in a daze.
All the captains and lieutenants line the room. Suddenly, the intruder or "great one", named Gnulin Riollio joins the room. " Ah...Ichigo Kurosaki. How long I've been waiting for you." He smiles and chuckles.
" Who the hell are you?!"
" You're about to find out my dear boy. I'm going to torture the hollow out of you and control it. Afterwards, I'm going to RULE Soul Society!"
Ichigo's eyes widen. Where are you Alexandra?

Shattered Chains of Fate Ch. 13
End of an Era
Ichigo was going to kiss Yoruichi for teaching him how to move so damn fast.
Or maybe just buy her a bunch of over priced cat food.
 Yeah, that sounded better.
Something to show her that he appreciated what she’d done when she had drilled him between bouts with Zangetsu when he was learning his new skills and techniques. It was more or less like a second ascension, this Bankai he’d learned to use.
(One day, all in all, and he had shattered so many swords even EMIYA would have been hard pressed to keep pace with him, before he finally found the right ones. He had to. After the show they'd put on Rukia was scheduled to die in just one day, barely enough time to prepare a scaffold.)
If she hadn’t shown him how to use reitsu to launch himself off the ground and really move faster, he would have never gotten there in time. He would have never arrived in time to see Gin, the man who had attacked him at the Shiba house, half covered in ice and a man next to him completely coated while Rukia stood over a bleeding Renji.
Ichigo had barely noticed she’d been pulling on his powers again. Yet there she stood, a perfect white blade held in steady hands, and determination pinching her brows.
He came just in time to see Kyo shatter her zanpakuto into snow flakes with his bare hands and hit her with the roughest kido Ichigo had seen yet before grabbing her by the horrible red collar that was still stuck around her throat.
“Hey!” Ichigo shouted, levelling his sword point at him. “Drop her.”
Frantically, he searched Kyo’s eyes for that flash of recognition from before. There was nothing. Just calm, flat brown eyes. It was just like when they’d first met, only this time Kyo is a much better liar. He looks docile, even though he’s holding Rukia by the neck. Mild and kind.
Ichigo isn’t fooled. He hasn’t been fooled by Kyo for a long, long time.
“Ichigo Kurosaki. You’re quite the interesting one. Sad to say you’ll have to tell Kisuke that your mission ended in failure.” Kyo waves his hand and chants a spell and light smashes into Ichigo from all sides. It’s the same spell Byakuya had used in the human world, just a billion times stronger. Kyo rips the ribbon off of Rukia’s wrist and Ichigo’s power fades from her, leaving her in the simple white kimono.
Ichigo paused, frowning. He is loath to attack Kyo without knowing more about what he’s doing here, or where he’s been. Is he the captain that had ‘died’? It sounds like something he would do. He’s smart enough to fake his own death.
“What does he have to do with this?” Just because he opened a gate for them?
Kyo smiles, a smug phantom, and Ichigo realizes suddenly that he’s been chasing on thread on a tapestry the entire time.
He’s completely missed a bigger picture.
“Did you not wonder why Gin came to visit you? Or knew where you were? It was because I knew you would arrive in western rukongai. I even had him waiting at the gate for you, in case you charged in. You see, I knew you would have to use the Shiba canon. With such a dramatic entrance-”
“It left you free to move around without anyone noticing,” Ichigo cut in. He narrowed his eyes. “You used us as a distraction. Was it you who brought Rukia back, to lure us in? Why the west?”
“In part,” Kyo tilted his head, the smile still in place. “And the west was simple. That is where Urahara Kisuke’s referencial residence is, you know… oh.”
Ichigo grit his teeth. His temper was starting to flare, and with it so was his reitsu. Urahara had been using them for something. Kyo was using them for something. He wasn’t a damn puppet!
“I was under the impression that you were his subordinate. That you came here on his orders. I see now. So he told you nothing at all about what was happening here, or who I am or what I might be doing. I bet he didn’t even tell you about what he needed Rukia here for.”
Ichigo listened with half an ear as Kyo explained about the limits of shinigami powers, and the only way to break through them. The only way that Kisuke had ever found to break through them.
Hollow hybrids. White masks. Holes in the chest. Still shinigami. Rukia was just a container, and a hiding place.
Ichigo grips Zangetsu tighter. He stands somewhere between the present and the past. America and seireitei blur together and he struggles to piece apart the Kyo he knows and the man who stands before him, cold smiles and distant dreams. He is insubstantial and untouchable.
The bindings on his arms tighten.
Without warning the world explodes under a massive sword stroke from-
 A werewolf?
 *
A day before the execution, after they have been freed by a wanna be porcupine,Uryu wonders if he’s ever admired so or been so afraid of a girl that chases butterflies before.
Orhihime had changed somehow during the fight they’d had with Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Before that she had skittered around fights, even when they’d first been attacked. Uryu had vowed to protect her, but somewhere between the explosion at the start and the wall of gold that signalled the end of the fight she had changed.
Oh, she was still kind. Still gentle. She treated their former enemies with care and healed them back up to their fullest potential. She greeted their strange, rambunctious new allies with smiles and delight.
But when it came time to fight she didn’t hesitate anymore. She picked her target and put them on the ground, missing limbs most of the time. She hadn’t killed anyone since the Mayuri, no one else had deserved he guessed. At least not in her mind.
But she was vicious and determined when she had to be.
She was also, apparently, a frightening hand to hand fighter.
Uryu watched with muted horror as she and the little pink terror cleared the way for the rest of them to march up the hill, where Ichigo was.
“Geez,” Ganju scrubbed his hand over his head. “Why are women so damn scary all the time?”
“I wish I could tell you,” Uryu winced in pity when Orihime slammed someone into a wall with enough force to crack it.
She turned to them with a bubbling smile. “Let’s go! We need to hurry everyone!”
“Yeah,” Yachiru bounced at her side, blood on her tiny knuckles. “Let’s go lets go! Maki Maki let’s gooooo~”
Aramaki gave a long suffering sigh. “It’s not the worst nickname she’s given me… Okay, it’s a le-”
 “To the right!” Yachiru declared.
 “...we’re gonna be late.”
 * *
The werewolf lasts a total of twelve seconds before Kyo goes right back to monologuing. Ichigo almost pities him.
“Of course, once you were here,” he said with only a small under current of smugness, “I assassinated the entire Central 46.”
Ichigo stares at him, and starts laughing.
 He can’t help it.
After everything Kyo had told him before about the way this place was run, he’d finally offed them.
Maybe I shouldn’t have told him to ask Robin how to commit a coup?
He can’t help feeling it's partially his own fault, and entirely justified. If no one even questioned the orders sent out they were clearly just as power hungry and arbitrary as Kyo had described, all those years ago.
“Sorry, sorry,” he waves his hand as best as he can, feeling hysterical and worn out in all the worst ways. Somewhere under the betrayal is the twisting need to understand everything. This hogyoku, trapped inside of Rukia, was some kind of super powerful object. He’s getting sick of those.
“Sorry,” he says a third time and finally manages to get himself under control. “Okay, so your grand plan failed. Give me Rukia and we’ll all go our separate ways. Or, no,” he holds up a hand to stop Kyo from speaking. His mind turns. He still knows Kyo. He still knows how he thinks, even if Kyo doesn’t know him anymore. “You’ll have a back up plan.”
Kyo looked mildly miffed at being interrupted.
 “You’re impertinent.”
“You know that old man said something like that when I told him to grow a brain, too.”
“...My point stands. All the same, you’re right. There’s another way. Another method developed by Kisuke Urahara. “ Kyo held up a small cylinder and tapped it on Rukia’s chest. A hole opened up.
Ichigo twisted and thrashed. A burst of energy shattered the bindings at last, but by the time Kyo had already pulled out something from Rukia’s chest. Small, faintly glowing and blue.
The energy hit him suddenly. Unshielded, unfettered energy.
The curl of fog. Electricity along his skin. Children lost in the river. Sorrow. A desperate wish for change.
Kyo pulled his fist back to strike Rukia. Ichigo lifted his left hand, pouring power into it. He’d done it a million times before. He’d never done it alone. He’d never done it as a ghost.
 “      Gandr!    ”
Kyo freezes. Ichigo darts forwards, his hands outstretched. He gets knocked off course at the last second by Gin’s zanpakuto. He ends up stumbling, and wasting precious few seconds while the spell holds. He doesn’t have time to think of the how or the why, only that it works, but now he only has time for one.
 Rukia or the Hogyoku.
 Rukia or the _______
It’s not even a question. He snatches her off the ground and rolls to protect her body.
He comes to a stop hovering above her, Zangetsu raised in defense.
Kyo twitches back to life a heartbeat after and looks at him with new eyes.
“An interesting kido, I’ve never seen it before,” he says idly. “You really should have taken the Hogyoku. It’s much more valuable than one girls life. Even a noble one.”
“I don’t give a shit about any of that. Kings or rebels, gods or demons, the only part I care about is if they’re my friends. You should know that!”
 “Should I?”
The words bite harder than anything else. Ichigo actually flinches.
He opens his mouth to say something before a blur shoots out of nowhere. Yoruichi lands with a knife to Kyo’s throat.
No, he’s not Kyo anymore, is he?
 * * *
Kisuke hated having to make the call. He really, really did.
He wanted to have faith in Ichigo, but he was no fool. He knew he needed to be prepared for the worst case scenario. He knew that Ichigo, as bewildering of a child as he was, could still fail against Aizen.
 Probably would fail.
But he needed Ichigo for other reasons. He needed him stronger. He needed him more motivated. He needed him to see first hand just what he was up against, and how desperately they needed to put a stop to it.
Ichigo wouldn’t forgive him for his trickery. Another sin Kisuke could live with.
He did have to wonder what was going to happen to Ichigo now. He’s already lost faith with his father. If he hadn’t already he soon will lose faith in Kisuke, and Yoruichi too.
What will happen to an already isolated boy when he’s further pushed away?
“It’s heavy,” Ichigo says, his brown eyes dark and distant. The brilliance he’d displayed during their spars is gone. The vicious gleam and the near recklessness on him is gone, tempered and stamped down.
“Heavy?” Kisuke repeats, eying this boy. Perhaps not as much of a boy as Kisuke had thought. He’s seen eyes like these before.
     “The weight of their lives.
So he makes the call and he gathers the army, scant as it is.
 * * * *
Kon likes this guy, and the lady too.
She’s    terrifying, and she nearly killed him the first (and only) time he tried to cop a feel, but the second she met the girls she basically adopted them. Kon would have left them in the spare house, but neither of them was letting him go anywhere without at least one of them.
They have a trick where they go invisible, it makes it easier for every day life.
The guy is fun. He’s agreeable and gentle, and he doesn’t mind people watching with Kon. Even if he would rather go fishing most days. He’s kinda weird, too, and he insists that Kon practice fighting regularly. Ichigo’s body knows what he’s doing, if nothing else.
They wile away the summer days while waiting for Ichigo to return.
 * * * * *
They’re surrounded by people. Enemies and allies, all of them focused the man Ichigo had once called friend. A man he would have trusted with his life.      Had    , trusted with his life.
Blades gleam in the sunlight and fury weighs heavy across the battlefield. Rukia lies beneath him, her strength vanished, and one man comes to stand between them. His hands are red and raw and his hair is faintly damp but Byakuya puts himself between the pair of them and the traitor.
“He’s surrounded. It’s over now,” Byakuya says surely.
“Don’t be an idiot,” Ichigo cuts in. He raises to his knees, then his feet. “He wouldn't come this far without a back up plan.”
The sky splits open. Ichigo hates it when he’s right.
Beams of light encompass the three traitors and throw everyone else aside. They’re untouchable inside of them, and menos grande hover at the mouth of the tear, floating through it. Dragging them up and out of reach.
There’s a buzzing in his ears. Fury roaring under his skin.
“No one starts at the top.”
     “I was born in the-”
“From the very start, no one has stood upon the heavens. Not you, not I, nor even gods. However, that intolerable vacuum has come to an end. Henceforth...I shall stand upon the heavens.”
All Ichigo can think as he watches      (Kyo)     Sousuke get swallowed by a hoard of menos and darkness is just what the      fuck    happened in the last two hundred years?
“Farewell shinigami, and Ryoka. You were… interesting.”
Brown eyes watch Ichigo, and Ichigo alone as the darkness closes in around him.

Mysterylover watches Bleach episodes 38-39
mysterylover123
1. I think I’m starting to lose track of who’s with who and who’s in the gang right now. So to try and recap: Ruki’s in prison, Renji’s half dead, Ichi, Ganju and Hano are fighting some guy whose name I don’t remember, Chad is fighting some guy; Momo girl is freaking out over the death of Glasses Guy (Aizen), and Hime and Uryu apparently decided this arc was boring and left.
2. Ichi is actually scared of this guy? That’s a first. I guess the Tsukoyomi fear stuff really got to him.
3. Ichi freaking out over Chad potentially being dead (lol sure he’s totes gone for good) is sweet. Though how Chad’s gonna survive this is beyond me, that’s a lot of blood.
4. Is beardy guy still being chauvinistically “leave the killing to the men” towards glasses girl? God Soul reaper society is the freaking worst.
5. Hey Hime and Uryu get to cameo for two seconds in Ichi’s little “finding my fighting spirit” flashback! Yay! 2 seconds of Hime. I’ll take it.
6. I have to ask, is this miniboss Ichi is fighting actually important? Like, a recurring character? Should I be paying close attention to what he says or is he just another obstacle?
7. How many times is Ichi gonna get fatally stabbed and almost die in this arc? He better have some good health insurance.
8. Oh we’re doing the Mad Men/Vertigo thing again huh? Weird corpse looking Ichigo thing shows up. Uh. What is going on? Is this like that Dragon Ball episode where Goku fights a doll of himself?
9. So what we seem to be doing is teaching Ichi a lesson about treating his Sword as an ally and not just a tool. Is the sword sentient? I find the magic rules of Bleach very confusing.
10. The subtitles credit WhiteHair Ichi as “Hollow Ichigo”. Ooh boy am I intrigued by that. Tell me more. HollowIchi. Your lips are disturbing to me but I looove your sinister voice. Excellent.
11. Oh goddamit the episode ends with whatshisface being all “This isn’t even my final form”. Please tell me this isn’t gonna be a full on Freeza fight where 5 minutes are like an hour. But anyway Pink Evil little girl has evil aura so I love her. Please let her fight someone in the gang. I need that, I need that so much.
12. OMG we’re going Full Hohenheim with the Sword Rules in this fight. (I love Ichi with white eyes here.) I’m totally expecting the villain here to go “Working with Swords is just a cheap tactic to make Weak Fighters stronger, quit embarrassing yourselves” and Ichi to break out into a chorus of Stronger Than You. Or I would if the episode didn’t end with him getting fatally stabbed again. Jeez, like I said. Dude better have good health insurance.

The Red Tie That Binds - Part 1
Tumblr media
Pairing: Byakuya Kuchiki x OFC
Summary:
"An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch of tangle, but it will never break."
Yoshina Shihoin, younger sister of Yoruichi Shihoin, has history with Byakuya Kuchiki, Captain of Squad 6 and head of the Kuchiki clan. What happens when they meet after 100 years apart on opposing sides?
A/N: I posted this initially on my primary blog but decided to continue posting it here instead. So here it is. REVIEWS ARE ALWAYS APPRECIATED! Thank you! <3
Part 1 - Reunion on the Bridge
Tumblr | AO3 | Fanfiction.net
“Scatter,” the command reverberated through the air stifled with saturated spiritual pressure. Hanataro’s eyes widened.  They had all just witnessed the devastation that followed Captain Kuchiki’s Shikai release. Ganju’s blood, mercilessly spilled, still stained the bridge. Even as Rukia gasped in fear of what would befall Ichigo, something just was not as it should be.
Byakuya Kuchiki only had a split second’s warning before a strip of white clothing effortlessly wrapped around his Senbonzakura, effectively halting his Shikai release midway.
“Yoruichi,” he murmured in recognition, seeing just who has landed as gracefully as a cat on all fours in front of him. The former head of the Shihoin clan, Yoruichi Shihoin.
She rose to her feet as elegantly as she had landed. She glanced back at her old pupil, an involuntary smirk playing at her lips. “It’s been a long time, Byakuya.”
But Byakuya was not even looking at her anymore. Instead, his eyes were intently focused on someone directly behind Yoruichi. The woman standing right in front of the Ryoka boy. It couldn’t be... he thought in disbelief. But it was. The midnight black hair, the exact same shade as the demon-cat’s, twisted up on her head hiding its length. The whisky amber eyes apprehensively glancing his way unconsciously seeking recognition. There was no denying it. It truly was her – Yoshina Shihoin.
Memories threatened to overwhelm him but he resolutely composed himself. A century had drifted them apart and he was no longer the hotheaded boy with emotions bubbling on the surface that he was back then. He had a law to uphold. Nothing, not even his past, could distract him from his conviction and duty.
Wordlessly, without even a word of acknowledgment of the new arrival, Byakuya turned away. “Yoruichi Shihoin. I haven’t seen your face in a while. You’ve been in hiding for over a hundred years. I thought you were dead.”
Though the words were uttered monotonously with no feeling behind them, they came across as if it was an accusation. At least that is what it felt like to Yoshina so she took it as such. The words were directed at Yoruichi but she knew they were actually meant for her.
From the moment Kisuke and her sister had dragged her into this whole fiasco with Ichigo, Yoshina had dreaded this very confrontation. She had played it over a countless times in her head – how he would rage at her, maybe fight her even. She never expected the Byakuya she had known to let her off the hook easily. She had expected his hotheaded temper to burn her but this was beyond any scenario she could have ever imagined. This cold indifference. He didn’t even acknowledge her. Though the pale angular face framed by stark black hair was familiar, the slate grey eyes that had dismissed her felt like they belonged to a stranger.
She took a moment to truly look at him. The white captain haori begrudgingly made her proud even though they were on opposing sides today. The kenseikan on his head meant that he was now truly embracing his noble heritage and the weight of what came with it. Of course she already knew everything there was to know about him. Like a sponge, she had absorbed every little bit of information about Byakuya Kuchiki, captain of the sixth division, and the 28th head of the Kuchiki clan. She told herself that it was in preparation to know all she could about her enemy but she couldn’t truly lie to herself. A hundred years had passed and yet a day hadn’t gone by when she had not worried about him or thought of him.
Now here he stood, right before her eyes, in flesh and blood, purposely ignoring her. I’ll fix this Byakuya. Once all this is past us, I’ll fix it. I’ll fix us, she swore to herself. Yet seeing the unyielding steel in his eyes, she wondered if they ever could fix what she had once broken.
The drug administered directly to Ichigo’s bloodstream made him unconscious instantly. Yoruichi hauled him over and flash stepped away taunting Byakuya. In a glorious move that made it evident once and for all just exactly who was the Flash Goddess, she lifted off to the roof.
“Go, sister,” Yoshina called out. “I’ll hold him off.”
Finally, Byakuya met her eyes. “You?” The snort of derision and disbelief was implied though his dignity did not allow him to truly let it out.
“Me,” Yoshina replied resolutely.
From above, Yoruichi addressed him. “Three days. In three days I shall make this boy stronger than you. Until then, consider the fight between you two postponed,” she declared. “Feel free to give chase if you wish,” she said glancing down at her sister effectively blocking Byakuya’s path. “But Yoruichi Shihoin is not about to be caught by the likes of you.” With that last taunt, she disappeared.
Byakuya shifted his focus to the younger Shihoin. He pointedly glanced at her waist, noting the absence of a Zanpakuto as if to ask how she even hoped to battle him without one.
She met his emotionless gaze. How many times had she stared into those grey eyes? She’d seen the calm sea in them, the stormy clouds, and the smoky confusion. She knew those eyes like she knew her own. Except maybe she didn’t. She couldn’t read those eyes anymore. Maybe there was nothing in them for her to read at all. So hard. So indifferent.
“I don’t need a Zanpakuto to fight you, Kuchiki,” she responded to the unasked question.
He sheathed his own to even the battle ground. Or perhaps he simply didn’t think her worthy of even using the sword against her. Deeming her too weak to even truly put up a fight. Never underestimate your opponent, Byakuya. First lesson your grandfather ever taught us, she mentally chided him.
Without warning, she flash stepped to his right intending to punch him on his side. He barely saw it coming but just in time, he shifted, evading her blow. He made a grab for her extended arm to counter but she stepped away putting distance between them once more. All in the span of a split second.
“You have improved,” he commended. He hated the involuntary sense of pride that laced his words. He crushed it before it could show.
She smirked at him. The twist of her lips so familiar. He hated it too. “So have you,” she replied.
His eyes couldn’t help it. They briefly glanced at the red ribbon that was twisted around her hair. His hair tie. So that had survived 100 years though their friendship had not been as lucky. He remembered that day as clear as if it had just been yesterday. The day she stole that tie. Their last day. The day he told her that he was going to marry her.
“Hado number thirty-three. Sokatusui,” he uttered, firing the kido without incantation.
For a moment, she did nothing. Time slowed. The blue fire came at her until it was blocked by a ball of red flame. The two cancelled each other out. “Hado number thirty-one. Shakkaho.”
His eyes widened. Unbelievable, he thought to himself as he realized that she had fired kido at him not just without the incantation but without even the saying the name of the spell.
“Amazing,” Ukitake’s voice reached Byakuya’s ear. “This is unprecedented. I’ve never seen such skill before.”
Byakuya ignored the older captain as well as the knowing smirk on Yoshina’s face. He couldn’t help but be impressed with her skill but he hid it well. Besides, he shouldn’t be this surprised anyway. She had always had an affinity to kido that he could not even compare to. With enough practice, he knew she would master it. It seems she had.
“I’ve been practicing,” she said, unable to hold back a grin.
His face showed no emotion. “So it seems.”
Right before his eyes, she disappeared. He sensed her right behind him just before he turned to face her. The punch she had aimed for his back hit his face. He stepped away instantly. She had landed the first strike.
Her eyes widened with disbelief as his smooth pale aristocratic cheek reddened with blood. She had cut him without even meaning to. She glanced down at her hand to notice that the clan’s ring on her index finger had a trace of his blood.
Her obvious shock told him that she had not intended to hurt him. In the split second it took her to recover from her misplaced guilt, he flash stepped bridging the distance between them until they were mere inches apart.
Her mouth opened in a gasp. They were so close, yet so far. So many years between them. So many words unsaid, so many things unfelt. How many times have they sparred against each other? Yet she knew this was different. This time, the fight was real. This time, they were truly on opposing sides.
His hand was right in front of her heart, index finger pointed forward to the center. He thought he could hear the crescendo of its beat. She knew before the words even left his mouth that she wouldn’t survive this. Not straight to the heart. Not this close.
“Hado number four. Byakurai,” he said, grey eyes staring into amber.
The pain hit her hard. Excruciating and numbing at the same time. She had been so focused on him that she hadn’t even noticed. He had shifted his hand in the very last second to hit her shoulder instead.
The lightning pushed her back away from him. Clutching her shoulder, feeling the blood wet her palm, she refused to glance at the hole that must obviously be there.
“You missed,” she told him flippantly in a lightness that completely belied the true fear she had felt a second ago.
She met his eyes. Finally there was some emotion in them – an accusation. “You were holding back,” he reproached her.
She pointedly looked at his sheathed Senbonzakura. “So were you.”
In an instant, she lifted off and in a flash step that would have made Yoruichi Shihoin proud, she was gone.
Byakuya stared after her. She was gone as unexpectedly as she had arrived, unaware of the turmoil she’d left behind. Something pricked him inside. He couldn’t tell if it was the ice in his veins or the fiery rage she ignited.
Years of resolution, indifference and carefully crafted separation. A century of convictions. All shaken in the wake of one slip of an amber eyed witch. How dare you, Yoshina Shihoin? He cursed her.
All these years he had thought there was nothing in him that felt anything intensely. But today, he felt it. He felt the rage boil his blood in reminiscence of his younger days. He felt the hate. He felt it. He felt it with a passion he’d never thought was possible.
Part 2
More Author’s Notes:
My OC, Yoshina Shihoin, is Yoruichi’s younger sister. She’s shorter and slighter of build, with caramel skin, long violet-black hair tied up meticulously in a bun, and amber/whiskey colored eyes just like her sister. She dresses quite similar too in a black body suit that hugs her figure and does not restrict her movements in anyway. I don’t want to give more away because you’ll find out who she is and what powers she has along the way.
“Yoshina” loosely means good, virtuous, charitable, and kind. It also means apple tree but obviously that is not relevant so we are going to ignore it. It may also refer to flowering cherry tree. *wink wink* What an unexpected coincidence?!
I will try to keep the originals in character as much as possible but I will take liberties where creativity is necessary.
Reviews are the fuel that drives the writing. Please review!! THANK YOU!
This is completely new territory for me - Bleach I mean. So any feedback would be much appreciated!!

BLEACH - Name Games(?)
I was asked about zanpakutou stuff.  I don’t know that many have names and kanji choices that super jump out at me at a glance, but the ones that do come to mind all seem to have references to Buddhist icons that I’m sure don’t come across in English very well.  I tangentially touched on that when talking about Mayuri while doing my rambling series of posts about shinigami names, so I figure that'd be my entry point.
I don’t know that this will amount to a lot of posts, but if I had to pick one to start with the obvious choice would have to be Urahara Kisuke’s zanpakutou, Benihime.  It has a lot of wordplay involved that doesn’t come across in English all too obviously, plus a little religious reference tacked onto the very end.  I remember this being kind of a well circulated bit of trivia back in the 2000s but I don’t know that it’s persisted after all this time, so hopefully this isn’t too obvious to people.
Tumblr media
The name itself, Benihime[紅姫] is written pretty straight forwardly as 紅: ”Crimson”/”Deep Red” and 姫:”Princess.“  The release call okiro[起きろ] generally gets translated as “Awaken” which is accurate, but “Get up” works as well, but technically it can also mean “Stay awake,” but that’s really more a semantic issue for English, in Japanese the phrase is used identically in either situation.  In the context of Benihime being only the second shikai we ever see (after Zabimaru) it seems like a concealed sword being told to “Wake up” makes the most sense, but there’s a bit of a case for “Stay awake” that I’ll get to a bit later...  (Also worth noting real quick is that this kind of “rousing” verb is specifically about being awake -vs- asleep, and doesn’t extend to the English colloquialisms relating to “[sexual] arousal.”)
Tumblr media
Also, it’s never directly referenced, but both in cane form and in shikai form, Benihime has a unique blade shape that suggests that the sword blade has been broken; It lacks the distinctive Kissaki[切っ先]:”Point-area” of a katana blade, and the blade’s Hamon[刃文]:”Wave-pattern” doesn’t follow the edge of the blade properly at the terminus.  This plays into the themes well go on to address, so keep that in mind...
But the fun comes with the various techniques Urahara uses with Benihime over the course of the series.
Tumblr media
The one we get almost immediately is Nake[啼け] which the English translations erroneously called “Scream.”  But the Japanese use of the word, as far as I can see, refers to “call (out)” or “bark” or “chirp” generally in reference to an animal noise or to make noise like an animal.  It can also mean “sing” as an extension of the same use but in reference to bird song.  But as a bit of colorful language it’s commonly used in the context of smut and romance to describe little gasps, whimpers, and yelps.
The “Scream” translation seems to have been taken from the Chinese use of the word, which is similar to the Japanese, but includes the additional animal sound “Howl” and by comparison can refer to “crying (loudly)”, “wailing”, and “weeping.”
A curious detail is that when Urahara first uses this to defend from Ichigo’s newly discovered Getsuga Tenshou technique, Benihime produces a red shield, and it’s actually hard to notice at a glance, but the blade of Benihime is dripping with blood as a result, even though neither Urahara nor Ichigo actually got cut by it.  However, when Urahara uses this a second time when defending Ichigo from Yammy, there is no bleeding blade effect.
This shield is also later given the name Chikasumi no Tate[血霞の盾] written as “Shield of Blood Mist.” This all works to reinforce the association with the “Crimson” aspect of the name specifically with blood.
With the same “Cry!” command Urahara can also use his own zangeki projectile, like Getsuga Tenshou.
Kamisori[剃刀] is just the word for “Razor,” it appears to produce the same effect as when “Cry” is used offensively rather than defensively.  It’s possible Kubo chose to retcon “Cry” into being defensive only and renamed the attacking move as “Razor.”  It was never made especially clear...
And Tsuppane[突ッ撥] which is a weird construction of “Stab”/”Pierce”/”Prick” and “Reject“/”Exclude” but it’s a homonym with Tsuppane[突っ撥ねる] meaning “Reject“/”Spurn“/”Turn down.“  These two can be tabled for now as well, but they’ll fall into place by the end...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, Shibari[縛り] means “Bind“/”Restrain”/”Tie up” but it’s specifically the shorthand name for the Japanese method of rope bondage sex play.  And in conjunction with this Urahara uses Hiasobi, Benihime, Juzutsunagi[火遊 紅姫 数珠繋] which breaks down as 火遊: “Fire Play,” "Crimson Princess” again, 数珠繋: “Prayerbead Chain.”
So, if it wasn’t clear where we were headed with all of these, Blood, Crying, Razors, Spurning, Rope Play, Fire Play, and s Chain of Beads might seem all over the place if you take them at face value, but the central theme being evoked here is BDSM.  Which lend an extremely curious tone to Urahara’s character.  More over, there is the broken blade imagery I mentioned before.  Back in the day I had sort of wondered if maybe breaking his sword had been part of Urahara’s exile*, but the state of the blade never got properly addressed, and even the exile would just sit on the backburner for years...
Tumblr media
*At the time, I associated it with Kuukaku and Ganju’s similarly severed blades, but they also weren’t ever addressed.  The impression I’d gotten from the overall designs had been that when the Shiba family were stripped of their shinigami nobility status their zanpakutou were all broken as a means of rendering them incapable of ever effectively fighting back against Soul Society.  I also just kind of assumed there would be a similar explanation for Yoruichi’s conspicuously absent zanpakutou.
But there’s an extra detail in this...  We know how zanpakutou work: a Shinigami imprints their own soul onto a blank sword, their sword spirit develops in their inner world, and through meditation they can commune, negotiate, and make peace with their sword.  At the highest levels of that mutual understanding they can summon their swords out into the world, first as shikai and then as bankai, increasing in power and finesse the better they understand their sword spirits and thus themselves.
We see distinctly, in the case of Yumichika, that an inability to make peace with their swords can result in sub-optimal powers: Yumichika has his intentional misnaming of his sword and partial release; Zaraki has his entire inability (at first) to call on his sword at all; and Ikkaku and Shuuhei both have disagreements with the attitude of their swords --Ikkaku calling Houzoukimaru lazy, and Shuuhei being uncomfortable with Kazeshini’s bloodlust.
But we know that Ichigo took a short cut to forging this deep lifelong friendship with his sword, and the fact that the two aren’t in sync and don’t communicate with one another well is a repeated hurdle for Ichigo.  Thanks to Urahara’s special doll Ichigo just summoned Zangetsu directly into the outside world, requiring zero meditation or self reflection on his part.  And Urahara used this same method, to achieve bankai in just 3 days.
So, Urahara rushed his bankai training, his blade is broken, and its techniques all point to a BDSM theme.  The way I always saw this was that it sounded like Urahara forcibly subdued Benihime instead of ever negotiating with her.  His sword is broken because he broke it himself as part of asserting dominance over it. (not unlike how Mayuri broke his own shikai as a form of punishment after the Szayel fight)  And it lined up with a lot of the ongoing ominous tones surrounding Urahara all throughout...  At least until he just kind of vanished during the long drag of the Arrancar Arc, before being hurriedly shoved into the Arc finale.
So when we did finally get his bankai reveal in the Blood War Arc, some things fell into place rather neatly, but others felt a little out of sync with everything else...
Tumblr media
Viz translated Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame[観音開紅姫改メ] as “Opened Red Princess Neo” which isn’t strictly speaking wrong, but it communicates nothing of importance.   観音開: doesn’t really have a clean English equivalent, but it refers to what I can only think to define as “opening outward in two pieces from the center.”  Specifically this tends to reference double doors, or similar but not explicitly door structures like windows or shutters, etc...  It also refers to filleting a fish or dissecting a body in an accordant manner: with a central incision with two flaps peeled back from it. It’s the term used for a “Butterfly cut” in cooking.  Benihime is just “Crimson Princess” again, no alternate kanji or homonym play like some other bankai, plus 改メ: which is a suffix indicating “revised”/”modified.”
There’s also what I assume was intentional wordplay here where the  観音 in 観音開: “double-door” is the name of the Japanese Buddhist god(dess) Kannon.  Kannon (based on the Chinese Guanyin, who is a highly modified interpretation of what was the Hindu Avalokitesvara.) is worshiped as a goddess of infinite mercy.  So  観音+開: might imply something like “Opened Kannon”/“Kannon Unlocked”/”Empty Kannon” evoking imagery of the Goddess herself opened up on an operating table, tying back to the specific physical feature of being opened up from a center line, like double doors.
So the actual vibe of the full name is something like...
“Dissected Goddess-of-Mercy: Modified-Bloodred Princess”
Which has some wild and sinister implications, not dissimilar to Mayuri’s Ashisouji-jizo.  They share tones of corrupting or defiling the divine, and specifically gods of mercy and protection, distorted and mutilated.

Tabula Rasa
I’m a bit late for my own damn fan event, but it’s still the 29th somewhere! This is set in the DSM continuity, before any of the other standalone KuuKuya works. (Ratio Decidendi is about a month or so later, perhaps up to 7 weeks later.)
For KuuKuya Weekend Day 1: Angst [Argument]: Kūkaku finally addresses Byakuya having tried to kill Ganju during the invasion of Soul Society. ≈2,060 words.
The fire in the irori hearth had almost died to coals and embers when Byakuya carefully set a new log atop them, tending to it for a moment.
Kūkaku narrowed her eyes slightly in consideration of him partaking in manual labor, but quickly dismissed it. She'd noticed early on that he had a tendency to engage in hosting duties directly when they were alone together, rather than calling on servants. It still struck her as atypical, but it was nothing unusual for him. She drew the throw blanket about her shoulders tighter and took a long sip of her tea.
They were in one of the Kuchiki manor's many chashitsu—this particular tea room was relatively small, intimate, and relaxed in comparison to some of the others she'd seen, but no less ornate. The floors were a rich, warm cherry wood that was as much red as brown, and while the shōji doors were unadorned, the fusuma walls were painted with intricate cherry blossoms in whites and pinks. The tatami mats were oddly luxurious, and plush sitting cushions were scattered about.
Kūkaku knew the theme was rather common for Byakuya's estate, but it hadn't escaped her notice that the execution was more intricate than usual. It was clearly a room he liked. She'd gathered up several of the cushions for herself, along with a throw, and lain on her right side close to the irori for the warmth it threw off while they had their late-night snack of spicy wakame udon and tea.
She'd once more tried to puzzle out what was up with him and seaweed, but she made no further progress on the diversion, and her thoughts had turned to darker things. There'd been nothing ceremonial about the meal, and they'd largely eaten in silence.
Byakuya soon finished maneuvering and ensuring the log caught fire to his satisfaction. "Are you cold?" he asked. It was only a slightly more chill than usual winter for Soul Society, but they were in the middle of a cold snap. Given her attire and reticence to leave that evening, it had neither been difficult to guess she wanted nothing to do with it, nor any great burden to accommodate her in the depths of the manor. Her company had remained frosty, however, and given her current behavior, perhaps it wasn't that the cold had somehow seeped into the residence.
Kūkaku slowly shook her head, her eyes not deviating from the fireplace.
He watched her for a short time, and then followed her example, considering the flames. It'd long since become clear to him that there were two ways of getting her to do something she didn't want to: coaxing her with subtle appeals to responsibility, or challenging her. He didn't have the need, the means, or the desire to do either at the moment, and so he did nothing. It was evident something was on her mind, but the silence wasn't oppressive—even if it became such, he could withstand it easily.
Things went on in that fashion for some time, the fire quietly crackling between them.
"This is kind of absurd, you know," Kūkaku eventually said.
"What is?" Byakuya calmly asked.
"This. Here. You and me. A Kuchiki and a Shiba in a cozy room, having a snack together in the dead of winter."
He pondered the matter for a moment before closing his eyes and taking a sip of tea, finishing off his cup. When he opened them again, he said only "Yes." It was kind of absurd, and yet, there they were nonetheless.
Kūkaku's gaze flickered up to meet his as a frown creased her features. She returned her focus to the fire, but sat up and crossed her legs, squaring herself off against him. Long seconds passed as she considered what to say. His past with Kaien and Isshin, while pertinent to her line of reasoning, wasn't really what was bothering her. It was window dressing.
The Kuchiki had always stood for order, and the Shiba had always stood for change. They had formed one of the two axes of the Five Great Noble Houses, and had always been competitive and antagonistic, just like the Hasegawa and their materialism stood against the Fujita and their intellectualism. Only the Shihōin were different, for their concern was simply survival and continuity—though they would probably argue that they didn't stand apart from the others at all, but rather enabled their existence and competitions in the first place. It didn't matter at any rate. The interplay between the Kuchiki and Shiba was ultimately the same as every other dance between reactionaries and revolutionaries—but it had a personal tinge.
Kūkaku briefly recalled Ichigo comparing it to the Capulets and Montagues during one of their talks. He'd had to explain Romeo and Juliet to her and had summed it up with 'Basically, they died because their families hated each other.' Her expression grew hard and flinty as she thought about that, but she had her honor.
"You tried to kill my little brother," she said, her delivery slow and deliberate.
"Yes," Byakuya said. There weren't any special circumstances like with Rukia and Kaien that could be said to have caused a misunderstanding. He had tried—albeit not particularly hard—to kill Ganju. The wounds he'd inflicted had been fatal—and he'd deliberately made them painful. He could hardly deny the accusation.
Kūkaku focused on him.
Byakuya watched her steadily. The turquoise-green of her eyes was often tranquil, and was sometimes cold, but at that moment it was hotter than the coals in the hearth.
"And you tried to kill my cousin," she continued.
"Yes," he repeated. His treatment of Ichigo was even less disputable.
There was a long quiet as Kūkaku stared him down. The matter with Ichigo was plainly resolved—she didn't have to seek some sort of justice for him. Rather, she invoked him to make a point: "But you tried to kill Ganju specifically because he told you he was a Shiba."
Byakuya was imperturbable. "Yes."
The din of the hearth suddenly seemed rather loud in the silence that followed. After awhile, Byakuya looked down at it. He poured himself a cup of tea and sat before looking at Kūkaku once more. "I told him that 'My sword was not made... to kill pests like you.' He persisted, and soon said 'I don't know how it is with you nobles, but a coward that could be scared away by something like that... does not exist in the Shiba family!' And so, I decided to take him seriously."
Kūkaku's focus roved across his face, taking in the set of his features. He looked utterly calm. If he was lying, there was no tell for it that she could see. She had known then—and knew just as surely still—that there was no possibility of Ganju going against a taichō and surviving, let alone winning. And yet, if Byakuya had wanted to kill him for sure, he easily could have. Was he trying to say that...
It was a rather difficult and complex social formulation. There was no particularly good way of saying 'I decided to allow your younger brother to save face, considering your formerly esteemed background and our mutual familial animosity, by trying to kill him with a fraction of my power rather than merely maiming them like a peasant, yet I also did not try excessively hard.' To announce something like that wouldn't smooth out any tension, even if it was direct and honest.
And then there was the fact that she hadn't wanted him to go along with Ichigo and company, yet she had also permitted it. She was responsible too.
Byakuya narrowed his eyes before closing them and drinking his tea in a single long sip. He set his cup aside and looked Kūkaku right in the eyes. A beat passed. "Three days later, on the day Rukia was to be executed, I fought my fukutaichō. He used his bankai, and I used mine. My remarks to him afterwards were 'Be proud, as someone who, after being struck by this power, is still able to retain the form of his body.'"
He left it unsaid that, considering their relative disparity, the same could be said of Ganju surviving his shikai. He couldn't take back the events—they had happened. But they were also a product of the circumstances. He had been following orders, but he had also been operating on his own feelings. Still, things had changed—he had changed—and so, he could earnestly say "It was an unfortunate meeting."
Kūkaku's eyes lingered on his for quite awhile, until she looked off to one side. That wasn't really quite 'I'm sorry,' but she didn't expect to hear that from him, and almost didn't want to. Things were rarely simple. She had already decided, as with Rukia, to forgive him if he showed any contrition. It was easier, in most ways—Ganju was no worse for wear.
The crackling fire was once again the only sound in the room, but it once more seemed pleasant and nurturing, rather than like some call to or remnant of conflict.
Her thoughts had just turned to gratification that, unlike Rukia, he said nothing more—even though that seemed utterly predictable—when the ruffle of his uniform drew her attention.
Byakuya stood, elegant as always, and made his way over to the tea room's mizuya, going through its supplies with practiced ease.
Kūkaku made a point not to watch him until he returned.
He picked up his cushion and moved it to the side to the left of where he had been sitting, so he was next to her around the square of the hearth. There was a muted thump as he set a bottle down onto the tatami between them, and then the clack of two crystal snifter glasses being deposited next to it.
She regarded the bottle with suspicion and confusion. It was also made of glass and was shaped like a cone, the sides of which had been dramatically tapered inward. The stopper was ornate and made of gold, with a spiral running down around the bottle. There was some Latin script on the side, but she couldn't read it. "What's this?" she asked, looking up at him.
Byakuya had just sat down and began to efficiently open the bottle, pouring for both of them. "Cognac, Frapin Cuvée 1888."
Kūkaku's look became dubious. "Eh?"
"Liquor from the Living World. It is blended, but some of the spirits in it date from even before that year." He didn't bother mentioning its rarity or expense.
She knew that it had just turned 2003, by the Living World's reckoning, so that made it... that was before Kaien had even become a fukutaichō...
Byakuya picked up his snifter, cradled it in his palm, and made a point of showing it to her. "Hold it like this. Your hand will warm the glass. The aroma is important to enjoying the drink."
Kūkaku considered him for a second before doing as he had with her own glass.
Once she had it aloft, he toasted her. "To Kurosaki Ichigo."
She blinked and thought for a moment, then resolved herself. "To Kuchiki Rukia."
Byakuya clinked his glass against hers and brought it to his lips, inhaling and taking a slow drink.
After a moment of indecision, Kūkaku did the same. It was nothing at all like sake or shōchū. It was powerful, slightly sweet, and riotous, yet smooth—complicated in scent and taste alike, smelling of dried fruits and nuts and more besides, yet tasting of citrus and vanilla and flowers. The only words for it were rich and heady, and she felt its warmth all the way down into her belly, submerging the heat of old grievances and suffusing every extremity to make both it and the cold alike mere memories.
He had already paused and watched her as she finished.
She pulled the snifter away from her face, in a bit of a daze. She liked her drink, but this... "This is..." It was very new.
"Would you care to finish the bottle with me?" Byakuya asked.
Kūkaku's eyes tracked onto his and she nodded. It wasn’t that big of a bottle, and if she had too much and fell asleep in a place such as this... Well, there were worse places to be.

They Deserved Better (No Ships Edition)
So, it’s been a year since Bleach ended. I remember coming back from work feeling depressed af because of my crappy job, and I got home excited, thinking I was going to see something incredible, but no. Kubo fucking trolled me with his shitty ending. I’m still sorta angry about it. So I decided to make this post about things that should have happened or should’ve been explained, no ships edition.
1. Yhwach VS The Six of Hearts
Okay, I know I’m not the only one who expected more of that final battle. What we got sucked, to put it simply. I had envisioned something more hardcore. What I wanted to see was all of Ichigo’s friends joining him in battle. Chad should’ve been there, along with Orihime and Rukia. Just Renji there with Aizen was terrible. Picture this: Ichigo and co. go follow Yhwach. They have a plan: they will keep attacking and try to find his weak point. Orihime is on the back, protecting them with her shield. Ichigo is in the middle, fighting actively against Yhwach. Rukia, Renji and Chad fight on the sides. However, they keep losing. Aizen helps them like in the manga. They start falling one by one until only Ichigo and Rukia are left. Rukia activates her bankai, and manages to freeze Yhwach for a short period of time. She falls. Yhwach starts unfreezing himself, and then Ishida appears like in the manga. Together they defeat Yhwach. The six are victorious. There’s a heartfelt apology from Ishida, and then everyone saying there’s nothing to forgive and that they’re always gonna be friends. This also helps complete Urahara’s speech of leaving everything to Ichigo and Rukia. Rukia freezing Yhwach gives Ishida enough time to arrive.
2. What’s with the new Soul King?
Aizen would’ve totally tried to become Soul King, but got stopped by Kyouraku. Now, they need a new SK, and I think maybe they’d use Ukitake. He gets to say goodbye to everyone, and instead of dying, he becomes SK. This isn’t ideal, but at least it solves a plot hole (the novels don’t count).
3. Isshin meets Rangiku and Hitsugaya once again.
I feel like they needed closure after the flashback. I think Isshin would’ve been happy to see them again. Also, imagine Hitsugaya’s surprise when he realizes Ichigo is his former captain’s son. I imagine there would be a lot of emotions involved. We needed Isshin telling Hitsugaya he’s proud of him for becoming captain. We needed some Rangiku and Isshin shenanigans as well.
4. Shiba Family Reunion
We missed big time Ichigo talking with Kukkaku and Ganju, as cousins. And Isshin interacting with his niece and nephew. I’d totally laugh at Ganju’s expression when he realizes Ichigo of all people is his cousin. A talk about Kaien would’ve been nice too. Which brings us too...
5. Rukia and Ichigo coming clean.
Rukia told Ichigo that when he was ready, she’d listen to his story. I feel that after everything, Ichigo speaking about his mother to Rukia would’ve given him some closure. It was one of the things which remained opened. With the realization he’s a Shiba, Rukia could’ve talked about Kaien and her role in his death. That would’ve made the two Memories in the Rain arcs come full circle.
6. Ichigo telling his sisters and friends he’s a shinigami.
I think this was long overdue and we never saw this happening or even given mentions of it. Karin totally knew, but it’s one thing finding out, than Ichigo telling her himself. Keigo, Mizuiru and Tatsuki always suspected too, but I think it would’ve been better if Ichigo told them himself as well.
7. Kon.
Look, I don’t care if we saw Kon briefly at the end. He should’ve been there, just as a nod to the very first arc. Kon was very important in that first arc, more than Chad, Orihime and Ishida. He should’ve appeared again. I don’t care how, but he should’ve been there with Rukia and Ichigo. Where was he?
8. Yoruichi’s, Urahara’s, Grimjow’s, Nel’s, and Kira’s fates.
Kubo should’ve dedicated at least a panel to show what happened to them. I still don’t even know if Kira’s alive. Last time we saw him, he was fighting with a gaping hole in his body. Is he alive? What happened to him? If he died, how did Rangiku, Hisagi, Hinamori and Renji, his closest friends, react to his death? What about Rose?
9. What’s going on in Hueco Mundo?
We needed to see if Harribel was freed from her imprisonment. Also, wouldn’t it have been great if SS and HM came to an understandment? With new leadership from both sides comes new relationships. Ichigo and Nel could’ve been great ambassadors for each side. Things not moving forward didn’t make sense, and left us with a sense of despair.
10. Hisagi’s Bankai.
We were robbed. Hisagi was robbed. We needed to see it. Hisagi needed to prove himself. Hell, he should’ve rescued his captain and friends. It would’ve been awesome.
11. A Hinamori and Hitsugaya conversation.
After Hitsugaya’s ultimate form, and after everything that happened between them in previous arcs, I feel that they needed to talk. Their relationship was given a lot of importance in SS and even in the Arrancar arc, but we never got closure from them. I’m not speaking in a romantic way, just in general. Hitsugaya even became stronger because of her, as hinted in chapter 423. Also, Yukio hinted at that in his battle against Hitsugaya, but we saw nothing about it again.
12. Whatever happened to Yukio and Rukia.
We saw them briefly, and then nothing else. I know they weren’t very important, but still, they were reintroduced at the end, and then Kubo promptly forgot about them again. He just got me curious to what they are up to these days, along with the surviving fullbringers.
13. Ichigo’s Powers.
There’s something that still isn’t clear. Did Ichigo lose his powers at the end or not? Yhwach took his Hollow and Quincy powers, which essentially made up his Shinigami powers too. So why was he still able to use his powers to defeat Yhwach? After his sword broke again, revealng Zangetsu’s main form, did it keep working? Did he slowly lose his powers again like when he used Mugetsu? The last chapter sort of made me conclude he lost them altogether, and became a normal human. Yet, in the RR novel apparently he went and could see them just fine. So what’s the truth? Did he or didn’t he lose his powers?
14. Ichigo continued being a Shinigami.
This isn’t about ships or anything, this is about Ichigo and his journey, the hero’s journey. By all means, he should’ve stayed as a Shinigami, not only because narrative-wise it makes the most sense, he enjoyed being a Shinigami and was miserable as a normal human in the Fullbring Arc. You cannot end Ichigo with being “happy” as a human, when in the previous arc we knew he was very unhappy and risked it all to become one again. If that had happened in the first few arcs, then maybe I could give you that ending, but this happened in the arc previous to the last one. It doesn’t make sense not having Ichigo still be a Shinigami. It even makes more sense if, after high school or after college, he moved to SS. His family would’ve understood. Ichigo never expressed a desire to be a doctor, not even once. His ending doesn’t add up no matter how you try to justify it.
15. Ishida not becoming a doctor.
Again, no matter how you look at it, Ishida becoming a doctor makes as much sense as Ichigo becoming one. They don’t precisely follow the same patterns as their parents. Ishida didn’t want to be a doctor. His true passion was sewing. He should’ve been a fashion designer or literally anything else but a doctor. Perhaps he wouldn’t want to be a Quincy after the war, I give you that, but becoming a doctor isn’t justified.
16. Ishida having a heart-to-heart with Ryuken.
Ryuken was a very shitty dad towards his son. Now we know he hated Quincies after what happened to his wife, and how his dad died. However, he still needed to apologize to his own son who was driven to do rash actions thanks to Ryuken’s lack of explanations. Even their last interaction was cold. I know Ryuken isn’t like Isshin, who is much warmer, but still, even Byakuya, who was a bastard to Rukia, apologized to her at the end of the SS arc. Ryuken should’ve apologized. Period.
17. Chad’s career.
It’s been said before but I’m going to say it again, Chad should’ve been a professional boxer due to his promise of using his fists to protect, not to get money. He felt pride of his roots because of his abuelo. He should’ve honored that promise, which is an important part of Mexican values, and even Japanese values. What he did isn’t honorable. Besides, he was a gently person through out Bleach. I think Chad was better of as a teacher. I can picture him teaching box at a gym, showing people how to protect themselves. Maybe working with children.
18. Orihime actually having a career.
Orihime was robbed through out the series. She started as a fun character who happened to like the MC, but was more than that. She was introduced as a quirky but intelligent girl, kind and compassionate. Her powers were never truly developed, and it was her time to shine, she didn’t accomplish anything worthwhile. Lastly, her character was reduced to being “the girl who loves the MC”, and that’s it. Even in the end, her only “price” was marrying Ichigo. There was nothing else for her. What the hell? I know many fans like to quote her “five lifetimes” speech, but you always miss an integral part. She says that if she could live five lifetimes, she’d like to become a teacher, an astronaut, or a baker. How is it she didn’t study any of them? Because of lack of funds, as the novel says? With her grades, she could’ve gotten a scholarship. These are just excuses because maybe WSJ and others don’t want to admit that the only thing Orihime accomplished was marrying Ichigo. Fuck that. She should’ve gotten to study anything she wanted. Hell, Orihime would’ve been a much better doctor than Ichigo and Ishida with her powers. She was tender enough to be a teacher.
19. The SS not rebuilding the Sokyoku.
I don’t know what was going on with Kubo when he wrote that, but it was a massive fuck you yo the SS Arc. It’s like nothing changed at all, which was not the path we had been taking with the manga. Things were already changing in the SS. Even Rukia thought so in the Fullbring Arc, saying it was Ichigo who had changed the SS, he managed to change a system that had existed for thousands of years. Rebuilding the Sokyoku totally symbolizes that things are back to the way they used to be before Bleach started. Ichigo’s journey meant nothing at all. Not only did he stay a normal human, but the system that almost killed Rukia applies today. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t make sense either. Imagine how Rukia feels? She was almost executed! The SS shouldn’t have rebuilt it. If anything, they should have started changing many things, including how the souls at Rukongai are treated. One would think that knowing many of the captains and lieutenants used to live there, they would try to make things better. They were on their way to changing, they shoudln’t have reverted.
20. Kazui shouldn’t have defeated Yhwach.
For me, that was the biggest fuck you in the entire manga. Yhwach was the man that killed Yamamoto, the Captain Commander of the Gotei 13 and the most powerful Shinigami. Yhwach killed many Shinigami. Yhwach consumed most Quincies. Yhwach was the guy who could travel between time and space. You’re telling a little boy defeated him with just one touch? I mean, maybe Yhwach disappeared because Kazui was an anomaly that wasn’t meant to exist. Stil, maybe they should’ve defeated Yhwach in some other way. I don’t know, maybe by using Ishida’s powers which were said to be the only ones that could defeat Yhwach? Why Kazui? No, it should’ve been Ishida in his own arc. Also, it’s a little weird that was the happiest day in Ichigo’s, Ishida’s and Renji’s lives. I can think of many other circumstances that could’ve brought them ultimate happiness but that day.

They take a while to make and coming up with the ideas was a process. I encourage you to enjoy and if you wish to make your own, you are totally allowed to use these or simply take ideas. It is a long post as it has 50 Black and 150 White cards.
Have a good one!

Believe it or not, I think the end is in sight for the ol’ Bount arc. I’ve fallen behind again, but I hate not finishing what I start, so here we go:
- We’re back in Soul Society again
- The Bount blew up the Penitance Tower, and I immediately said “who did this” in my best Tumblr voice, and then Ukitake immediately said “who could have done such a thing?” and I have not stopped laughing about it. Also, later, they made a bunch of shinigami rebuild it, like straight up masonry and shit. It’s like, “I went to shinigami school for this. I had to memorize all those kidou. I coulda just gone to trade school.” There’s even a part where Nanao, I think, has some actual dialog along the lines of “The men are getting really good at brick-laying.”
- The Bounts try to foment rebellion in the Rukon, and it’s extremely an episode of Kenshin, right down to the fact that about a quarter of the Rukongonians just look like mutants
- Ganju gets boars for everyone! Ichigo refuses to ride his and gets lost in the woods. ORIHIME LOVES HER BOAR. At one point, she does a hockey stop on her boar. I hope she got to keep it after this episode, like Viggo Mortensen and his horse from Lord of the Rings.
- There was an actual good episode, where Rukia has to fight a Bount by herself in the middle of Rukongai, and she doesn’t have her zanpakuto, and it’s just Rukia being super-hardcore and using a shitty sword she found on the ground and defending some homeless children and she keeps getting up after she gets trashed over and over and I was *here* for it, until Byakuya ruined it by rescuing her at the end. Also, that episode had too much Lilin, which is to say, Lilin was in it.
- Speaking of ol’ Nii-Sama, one of my favorite running gags in my writing is to have someone ask Byakuya for some extremely trivial favor and then have him refuse, and *it happened*. Ichigo asks him if they can go fight Kariya together and Byakuya’s like, “Naw.” Then later, they are fighting Kariya simultaneously and Byakuya refuses to try to avoid hitting Ichigo with Senbonzakura. The man is true to his own #brand, I will give him that.
- Hey, remember Renji? Renji sort of weirdly comes and goes throughout the Bount arc. He’s been gone for a while, when Hitsugaya starts talking about...going over to his house? While making sort of a weird sexy face?
Tumblr media
OBVIOUSLY, I got super excited about this, we’re going to see Renji’s place! It’s gonna be awesome! Does he have a foosball table? That weird chair Worf had on ST:TNG? So, what, exactly does Renji’s place look like? Behold:
Tumblr media
It’s...the woods.
My husband: Does Renji live in a van down by the river?
Me: Do you think Byakuya convinced him that there’s no on-base housing for Vice-Captains, and he commutes all the way from Rukongai?
Anyway, apparently, the reason Hitsugaya wanted to meet up with Renji was to drag him, because the following exchange occurs, basically word for word:
Hitsugaya: Go do this thing.
Renji: Sure.
Matsumoto: Hey, didn’t you just break your sword again?
Renji: I don’t need my shikai to beat up a bunch of Rukongai thugs.
Hitsugaya: What if you meet a Bount?
Renji: . . .
Hitsugaya: Maybe you could run away.
Matsumoto: Oh, DAMN.
- Rantao finally shows up and she is a stone cold bitch and I love her so much. She shoots Kariya with a kidou shotgun of her own design. Why didn’t Aizen recruit her?  I’m gonna go ahead and assume he tried and she told him to fuck right off. I want to marry her.
- There’s a barbeque at Squad 10, for some reason. Also, I am extremely obsessed with the shitty green couch in the Squad 10 offices. It looks exactly like the couch in every engineering grad student office in the world. Did Isshin find it on a curb? You know that 9 out of 10 times Hitsugaya comes in the office there’s some vice-captain sleeping on it and it’s frequently not Matsumoto. Renji spent half an episode sitting on the back of it and you know Byakuya won’t let him nap in his own office. I think it may be spiritual inverse of Aizen’s Hueco Mundo couch. There was some actual plot going on this episode, and I talked over it the whole time, screaming about how I hoped everyone just camped out in Hitsugaya’s office with like four lieutenants sleeping on the couch, and friends, that’s how the episode ended. Honestly, that’s how Bleach should have ended, too: Everyone napping on Hitsugaya’s grad student couch.
(okay, they were actually sleeping on the floor, I still claim victory)
