Okay I have decided I never want to work in a dentist office, i was already apprehensive because there would be lots of kids and lots of stranger’s teeth and I don’t really like either of those, but after listening to someone use a little drill FOR EIGHT HOURS TODAY I realize I would not survive a week around the noise

Tell me (and the world :) ) something good about Singer Street. It can be something I know already, if it feels fitting as an introduction of this to-be-awesome story to a larger audience. :)
As you'll have seen, Molly beat you there but I'm very happy to answer a second ask about it and I may even have some new things for you.
The names of my main characters were always meant to be temporary so I'm trying out new ones to see if they fit. So I'll try to introduce them :)
Arthur is the POV character. He's a trans guy who doesn't know yet that he's autistic. He's pretty creative but he struggles with holding jobs and the story starts with him losing his job. His only family is his step-father, and while he'll deny it without blinking, he's very much in love with his roommate Gabriel. He's pretty outgoing even though he struggles with making real friends, and he's sensitive and empathetic.
Gabriel is Arthur's roommate (and landlord). He's autistic and he's a computer programmer mostly working from home. He founded the shared house on Singer Street with his then-girlfriend Manon and his best friend Justin and actually owns the building. He left after breaking up with Manon and met Arthur (and fell in love with him). He's the quiet, introvert type, sometimes too secretive, he cares a lot but he doesn't show it easily.
Justin is the one who manages the house. He's bipolar and has EDS, he uses a wheelchair and he's having trouble because the house isn't accessible and they don't have the money to alter it. He can't work anymore but he's an activist, involved with a bunch of local organizations. He's a bit abrupt at first and he doesn't warm up to people easily, but he's great with the youngers housemates.
Val (short for Chevalier) is one of the housemate. They're nonbinary and they have ADHD and dyslexia. They've just graduated and become a full sign language interpreter, and they're about to move out of the house to live with their girlfriend. They're the life of the party, always positive and sunny, it's hard to tell if they're ever serious, and they love glitter and bright colors.
Mira is the youngest housemate at 19 and she's schizophrenic. She's a student, undecided about her future but she loves history. She has a bunch of sisters and a complicated family history, and she's really trying to figure out who she is outside of that and outside of the stigma of her diagnosis. She's discreet and she tends to make herself small but if you let her she'll talk your ears off about anything history or literature.
How's that?

Gray was right. Both kids were asleep in their arms by the time they got back to their inn, and they didn’t wake when Natsu and Gray transferred them to the bed. Sting immediately reached out in his sleep, grabbing Rogue’s hand and pulling them close. Natsu sent a message to Yukino as Gray pulled the blanket up to cover both the sleeping kids.
“She said to meet her at the market instead of the guild,” Natsu said quietly, frowning at his phone.
“Jiemma’s probably not happy about us visiting,” Gray said. He rubbed his face and yawned. “He did tell us to stay away.”
“Yeah, well, what’s he gonna do? Call the Magic Council?” Natsu rolled his eyes. “He can’t stop us from coming here.”
“He could stop letting them see us, though,” Gray said. “We have to be careful.”

Natsu sighed and sat down on the end of the bed, careful not to disturb the kids. Gray stepped closer and Natsu reached out, pulling him close and wrapping his arms around Gray’s waist.
“They need help,” Natsu said softly. “Like I did.”
Gray sighed, running his fingers through Natsu’s hair. Sting’s outburst had been eerily similar to some of Natsu’s meltdowns when he’d been younger. Gray remembered being both frustrated at Natsu’s constant tears, and jealous that he could show his feelings so freely. It had taken Gray years to be able to cry for the family he’d lost, and Natsu had been the one to show him that his grief was okay.
“We are helping,” Gray said. He crouched down in front of Natsu and ducked his head until they were making eye contact. “Sting’s lucky to have somebody like you who gets how his brain works.”
“But I can’t always be here,” Natsu said sadly. “And it’s not just him – Rogue seemed upset earlier, too.”
Gray shook his head. “No, I thought that at first, but I think they were just excited. They were rocking in my lap when we were watching the jellyfish, too. The noise seemed to bug them a bit, they kept rubbing their ears, but they weren’t upset like Sting was.”
Natsu nodded as they both lapsed into silence. Gray ran his hands up and down Natsu’s thighs comfortingly, then leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. Natsu smiled, turning and catching Gray’s next kiss on the lips.
“C’mere,” he said, shifting over and tugging on Gray’s arm. The bed was barely large enough for the four of them, but Natsu managed to lie down next to Sting, who made a quiet sound in his sleep as he snuggled closer to Rogue. Gray sighed and curled up against Natsu, immediately relaxing as the tension in his shoulders started to fade.
“I think we need a nap too,” Natsu said sleepily, pulling Gray close.
“Mm.” Gray kissed Natsu’s forehead and wrapped an arm around his waist, letting himself succumb to exhaustion. “Go to sleep.”
~
After that, Gray and Natsu visited as often as possible. Sting was always thrilled, throwing himself into hugs and telling them both a million stories. Rogue was still the more reserved of the two, but over time they started to open up as well, eagerly telling Gray and Natsu facts they’d learned since the last visit – most of them about jellyfish.
“They can make other ones of themselves,” Rogue said proudly the next time they went to the aquarium. “If they fall apart they turn into new ones!”
“That’s gross,” Sting said, pressing his face against the glass.
“You’re gross,” Rogue replied, bouncing on the balls of their feet and sticking their tongue out at Sting. “An’ some of them have teeths.”
“Super duper gross.” Sting looked up at Gray and grinned. “D’galu! Na?”
Gray’s face lit up, just like it did every time he spoke Isvanian with the kids. “Sy’at jant,” he chided with a smile on his face. “Be nice.”
Natsu leaned in and kissed Gray’s cheek, laughing at the blush that crept up the back of his neck. “I like seeing you happy,” he said quietly, kissing Gray’s ear. Gray didn’t reply, just bumped his head against Natsu’s and squeezed his hand.
Dropping the kids off with Yukino after visits was the difficult part.
“Why you can’t stay here?” Sting would ask each time, arms wrapped tightly around Natsu’s neck. “I miss you when you go away.”
Each time Natsu would explain that his and Gray’s families were back in Magnolia, and that they’d be back again soon, but as time went on, it got harder and harder to leave. The last time they’d headed home, Sting’s disappointment and frustration had ended with him yelling at Natsu and pushing him away, refusing to hug him or wave goodbye.
“He didn’t mean it,” Gray said gently as they rode the train home. Natsu lay sideways on the bench with his head in Gray’s lap, eyes closed while Gray ran cool fingers across his forehead and through his hair.
“I know.” Natsu’s voice was muffled by Gray’s sweater. “I did the same thing when I was little.”
“I remember,” Gray said with a small smile. “You told me you hated me.”
“I was kind of an asshole.” Natsu slipped his hand under Gray’s sweater and ran his thumb across his ribs. “I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t mean it either,” Gray reassured him.
Natsu didn’t answer, just sighed and cuddled closer. Gray tucked a wayward strand of hair behind his ear and let a burst of cool magic trickle across Natsu’s temples.
“He’s getting worse,” Natsu said after a while. “I’m really worried about him. Both of them.”
Gray nodded as he looked out the window. Sting’s outbursts had been happening more and more often lately – usually fighting with other kids or turning to shouting and tears as soon as something didn’t go his way. Rogue, on the other hand, never yelled. Instead, they would cry and withdraw if something overwhelmed them, and it could take hours to calm them down.
“I don’t know what to do,” Natsu said softly. “Sting was talking about fighting again today. He’s obsessed with being the strongest.” He hesitated, then added, “He had bruises again, too.”
Gray’s stomach twisted with the same unsettled sensation that happened anytime he saw marks on either of the kids. The first time Sting had shown up to their visits with a bruise on his arm, he’d insisted it was from falling while playing. It wasn’t unbelievable – Gray remembered the myriad of injuries he’d had from roughhousing as a kid – but something about it didn’t feel right.
“Maybe we should say something,” he said.
“To who?” Natsu sounded miserable. “We don’t have any proof. They both tell us it was accidents, Yukino won’t talk to us, and nobody’s going to make a move against one of the most powerful guilds in Fiore. And if we try, it could make it worse for them.” He sighed. “All we can do is keep visiting, and I feel so useless.” He rubbed his face with the back of his hand. “I miss them already.”
“I know,” Gray said, tipping his head against the window and sighing. “I miss them too.”
~
Their next trip to visit the kids started with a job gone wrong.
“I thought the job poster said it was one monster,” Gray hissed as he jumped backward, barely dodging the venomous spittle that flew through the air. He held out both hands and shards of ice flew from his fingertips, shredding through the group of snake-like monsters that were attacking them.
“Technically it was one monster,” Natsu said. He tossed a fireball down the hill into the center of the snakes, and Gray wrinkled his nose against the smell of burning flesh. “At least, until it turned into… that.”
The writhing mass of snakes hissed in unison. Half of them were blackened and burned in piles on the ground, surrounded by prisons of ice. The remaining ones quickly slithered together, making a squelching sound as they solidified back into one creature.
“Fucking hell,” Gray muttered, firing bolts of ice at the creature in an attempt to pin it to the ground. It snarled at him, opening its mouth wide and showing off teeth that were nearly as long as his arm.
“Go for its head!” Natsu shouted, scrambling down the hill as he blasted it with bursts of flame. It turned away from Gray, bright red eyes tracking Natsu’s movements as he leaped toward it. Gray quickly narrowed his magic into a spear, exhaling and focusing on the monster’s throat before firing.
The monster screamed in rage and pain as the lance pierced its neck. The ground underneath Gray trembled and he stumbled forward. Before he could catch his balance, something heavy slammed into him and knocked him onto his back.
Gray grunted in pain as he pushed himself up on one elbow and tried to focus on what had hit him. It took him a second to realize it was the end of the snake’s tail, tipped with a set of razor-sharp barbs. He blinked slowly, then looked down at himself. Blood dripped from five deep wounds that ran directly across his chest and stomach.
“Gray!” Natsu’s panicked shout filled the air and was quickly followed by an enormous blast of fire. The tail flailed a few times as the creature shrieked in pain, then dropped to the ground as everything stopped. Natsu appeared at the top of the hill and dropped to his knees next to Gray, quickly tearing off his shirt and pressing it to the wounds on Gray’s chest. Gray hissed in pain, grabbing at Natsu’s wrists.
“You’re gonna be okay,” Natsu reassured him. His hands shook as Gray’s blood quickly soaked through the shirt and started to stain his hands. “Hold this.” He took Gray’s hand and held it against the makeshift bandage. “We have to stop the bleeding.” He yanked off his scarf and folded it carefully, then pressed it against the wound as well. Gray’s vision swam as he gritted his teeth against the pain.
“You can cauterize—” He gasped as a wave of nausea hit him, and he quickly rolled onto his side and threw up.
“What the hell?” Natsu gripped Gray’s shoulder as he vomited again, shaking at the heat and sparks of pain that were quickly flooding his body. “What’s wrong?”
“Think it’s… poison,” Gray managed. Natsu swore as he carefully pulled back the corner of the shirt. The edges of the wounds were a dark purple color, and black coloring spread out from it in strange patterns across Gray’s skin.
“Shit.” Natsu covered it back up, wrapping the ends of his scarf around Gray’s torso and tying it off. “I can’t cauterize it if it’s poisoned. We have to get you to a medic.” He pulled out his lacrima phone and quickly sent a message to Yukino – Gray’s hurt, get a doctor to the inn. Please. Then he shoved the phone back in his pocket and shifted so Gray was behind him.
“C’mon,” he said, trying his best to be gentle as he maneuvered Gray onto his back. “You’re gonna be okay.”
~
It took almost two hours to reach the city.
“We must be getting close,” Natsu said, trying to keep his voice steady as he shifted Gray on his back. He slid his arms under Gray’s thighs to nudge him further up as Gray made a soft sound of protest. “You still awake back there?”
“’m fine,” Gray insisted, words slurred. “I can… walk.”
“Uhuh.” Natsu rolled his eyes. “Last time I put you down you fell over.”
“Did not.”
“Wanna try again?”
Gray was quiet for a second, then let out a quiet groan of pain and pressed his forehead to the back of Natsu’s neck. Even Natsu, who ran naturally hot, could feel the feverish heat of Gray’s skin against his, and he cursed under his breath. Gray was barely holding on, arms looped loosely around Natsu’s shoulders, and his breathing was ragged and uneven.
“Hang on, Snowflake,” Natsu said softly, sighing in relief when they crested the hill and the outskirts of the city appeared on the horizon. “Look, we’re almost there.”
Gray didn’t reply, just shivered, and Natsu flared up his magic just enough to keep him warm as they walked. It took nearly twenty minutes to reach the gate, and by that time, Gray was unconscious. Luckily, the inn where they were supposed to meet Yukino and the kids wasn’t far.
“The doctor is here,” said the innkeeper when Natsu stepped through the door. She gestured to the first room in the hallway, and he ducked inside, sighing with relief when he saw Yukino, Sting, and Rogue, and an unfamiliar woman in medic’s robes.
“What happened?” the doctor asked, gesturing to one of the beds. Natsu laid Gray down gently, making an apologetic sound when Gray groaned in pain. His face was pale, and the makeshift bandage on his chest was soaked with blood.
“A monster.” Natsu rubbed his face as he slumped down on the bed next to Gray. “It was like… a snake, sort of. Or lots of snakes. It’s dead, but it hit him with its tail.”
“A nagehi,” the woman said as she pulled back the bandage to expose the wound on Gray’s chest. It was still bleeding sluggishly, and the black marks had spread across his ribs and up to his throat.
“This isn’t good,” the healer said, pressing gently at the skin around the wound. “The nagehi’s bite is usually deadly – I’m honestly surprised he’s survived this long.”
“Can you heal him?” Natsu demanded. He took one of Gray’s limp hands between his and squeezed it.
“I can try.” The woman put both hands out, closing her eyes for a moment as a greenish light emanated from them. Natsu held his breath as he stared at the magic and held Gray’s hand tightly. After a moment, the healer pulled back and shook her head sadly. “The poison has spread too far,” she said, voice gentle. “There’s nothing I can do.”
“No,” Natsu whispered, leaning closer and touching Gray’s cheek. “You have to—there has to be something. Someone.” He looked over at Yukino, who was staring sadly at him from where she sat with the two kids. “Wendy,” Natsu said, looking back at the healer. “Wendy could fix it, she just—she’s in Magnolia, can you—”
“I’ll try to contact her,” Yukino said, pulling out her lacrima phone. She whispered something to Sting and Rogue, who stayed on the bed while Yukino stepped out of the room.
“He won’t survive that long.” The healer touched Natsu’s shoulder, and he shrugged her hand off angrily. “I’m so sorry,” she said again, then quietly left the room.
Everything around Natsu slipped away as he stared at Gray. An ache spread through his chest, pulling the air from his lungs until he couldn’t breathe. He brushed a sweaty strand of hair from Gray’s face with trembling fingers, shaking his head in disbelief. Gray couldn’t die. Not here, not from this, not—
“I can help.” A small, quiet voice snapped Natsu out of his pain, and he looked up to see Sting standing on the other side of the bed. Rogue wasn’t far behind him, staring over Sting’s shoulder at the mess of blood and venom on Gray’s chest.
“Sweetheart,” Natsu said, voice breaking. “I know you wanna help, but you can’t—”
Sting ignored Natsu and stood on his tiptoes, holding the edge of the bed and carefully reaching up to touch Gray’s chest. Gray made a pained sound, shivering violently as the fever wracked his body with chills. Natsu’s eyes widened when Sting started to glow with a soft, white light.
“Don’t be mad,” Sting whispered, refusing to look at Natsu. “Please.”
Natsu stared as the scales along Sting’s temples and cheeks started to shimmer, bright and iridescent. The magic flowed down his arm, pulsing out of his fingers and sinking into the skin around the wound. The black marks immediately started to recede, pushed away by the bright, healing light.
“Holy shit,” Natsu breathed, leaning against the edge of the bed as he watched the magic flow through Gray’s entire body. When it touched his temples, the pained look on his face faded. His gasping breaths evened out as the shivering stopped.
Natsu reached out to touch Sting’s hand, but Sting quickly flinched away and backed up toward the other bed. His magic faded, leaving him red-faced as he stared at the floor.
“Hey, it’s okay,” Natsu said gently as he stared at Gray’s chest, amazed to see scar tissue covering what had been a devastating wound only moments ago. “You... saved him.” He looked back up at Sting, who was holding his hands behind his back and looking like he might cry. “What’s wrong?” Natsu asked, pushing himself off the bed and crouching down to Sting’s level.
Sting just shook his head. There was a soft touch on Natsu’s arm, and he turned to see Rogue standing next to him, giving him a serious look.
“Sting can fix it when we’re hurt,” they said. “but he’s not allowed ’cause its not strong.”
A flash of rage coursed through Natsu and he had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep himself from growling. That fucking asshole. He turned back to Sting and held out his hand.
“Sting,” he said, keeping his voice as soft as possible. “You aren’t in trouble. I promise. I’m so happy you’re here, you did such a good thing.” Sting peeked up at him but didn’t look convinced. “You are so strong and so amazing. You saved Uncle Gray’s life.” The words caught in his throat and he swallowed back tears. “I’m so proud of you.”
Sting looked at Rogue, then back at Natsu, his expression somewhere between uncertain and relieved. “I’m not supposed to,” he insisted.
“That’s fuc—” Natsu cut himself off, taking a deep breath. “I don’t care what anybody else says. Uncle Gray was very, very sick and he could have—he might have died, if you hadn’t helped. And you saved him. That makes you so, so strong.” He held out both arms. “C’mere. It’s okay.”
Sting chewed his lip for a second, then took a small step forward. When Natsu’s fingers touched his arm he flinched, but he quickly darted into the embrace and pressed his face against Natsu’s shoulder. Natsu held him tightly and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
“How did you do that?” Natsu asked after a second, pulling back from the embrace and pushing himself to his feet. He helped both kids up onto the bed next to Gray, who was still unconscious. His expression was peaceful, and the occasional glimmer of white magic swirled under his skin.
“I maked it good,” Sting said seriously. “The black stuff was yucky and I can fix it.” Now that he knew Natsu wasn’t angry, he seemed to relax a little. He touched Gray’s forehead carefully and closed his eyes. “It still hurts so he’s sleeping but the bad stuff is all gone.” Then he shifted closer to Gray and curled up next to him, resting his head on Gray’s shoulder and keeping his hand over the scars on his chest. Rogue copied him, cuddling up to Gray’s other side and putting their hand over Sting’s.
“You’re a healer,” Natsu said softly as he pulled a chair next to the bed and settled down in it. “Like Wendy.”
Sting’s brow furrowed in a pout. “I can fight, too,” he insisted. Natsu was about to reply when Yukino poked her head back in the door.
“I talked to Wendy,” she started to say, then trailed off when she saw Gray’s peaceful face and scarred chest. Her eyes widened, flicking between Natsu and the kids.
“Did you know?” Natsu asked. “About his magic?” Yukino shook her head slowly as she stepped toward the bed. Sting refused to look at her, just curled up tighter against Gray.
“Sting did this?” Yukino asked softly.
Natsu nodded. “He saved Gray’s life.”
A calm descended over the room as Yukino leaned down, brushing Sting’s messy curls out of his face and kissing his forehead. Natsu’s heart ached at the uncertainty on Sting’s face, and the anger from before resurfaced.
He’s not allowed.
It’s not strong.
I’m not supposed to.
Natsu let the anger simmer as he watched the kid’s joined hands rise and fall with Gray’s slow, even breaths.
You are strong, he thought. And I’m going to get you away from that asshole if it’s the last thing I do.

I’ve gotten some asks regarding Sia’s Music Movie and my thoughts on it.
I’m not going to answer them directly because a few were off anon and a little rude, and while they might not be worried about people knowing who they are, I don’t want to promote their blogs or send any hate towards them or myself by showing their blog names. But the gist of them were, how can I support a character like Newt, played by an allistic actor, but not the character from Sia’s movie, also played by an allistic actor? (I don’t know how they would have known that I don’t support Sia’s movie, but whatever, the assumptions were correct.) While the questions may not have come from a nice place, I do find it an interesting thing to think about, and thought I’d try elaborating. So here I go.
I think what really helps is headcanons. People headcanon characters as all kinds of things all the time. Autistic, ADHD, Trans/NB, other LGBTQ+ identities, Disabled, and even POC headcanons are everywhere. They are all great, and it’s a lot of fun for the people who have them.
If a character in a television show or film isn’t marketed as something, or casted as something, but the audience identifies a characteristic about them as this or that, it doesn’t matter who the actor is or if the actors themselves are this or that, all that matters is the character.
It’s a much different story if it’s the other way around.
Newt was not created to be autistic. So the fact that they hired a non autistic actor to play him is very acceptable. Eddie Redmayne plays the character as autistic because he believed after reading the script that that was the truest interpretation of that character. Because of his acting choices, it at least seems, that the writing for the second movie and acting of the younger version of Newt were influenced more towards an autistic version of the character.
?Music? (I think that’s the name of the character and the movie) was created to be an autistic character. There is no interpretation to be made. She is autistic, full stop. Why would you even think of hiring someone who isn’t autistic to play her? I don’t care if you only have an actor pool of 3 people to choose from. Pick the best of those 3 and go. If none of those 3 are able to act in your production because it is too distressing, make it less distressing for them! If you can’t make it less distressing rewrite the film.
Babies play babies, dogs play dogs, but you think an autistic person can’t play an autistic person?!? It’s so insulting to me that entire productions can work around the schedules and needs of young children and animals, but the minute an actor needs certain accommodations for a disability or neurodivergence or something like that, they all of a sudden can’t think of any way that they can work around it.
They do this because it’s easier, cheaper, they don’t really care, and they know they can get away with it.
There are many autistic actors out there. I bet several of them can dance too. I bet you could even find quite a few nonverbal or semiverbal autistic actors who can dance. And even if you couldn’t, you could work around them not being able to dance. Stunt doubles and cgi exist!
TLDR;
One version is
audience: “hey this character is autistic”
writers: “you know what? That wasn’t our initial intention, but you’re right, and should say it.”
The other is
writers: “this character is autistic, but the actor isn’t because we were lazy”
audience: “then you did a bad job”
writers: “shut up”
Side note: I think non autistic people can play autistic characters, and play them well. A truly good actor can play anything. “Can” being the important word there. Because “can” is not the same as “should”.

W.I.T.C.H. Reboot! W.I.T.C.H. Reboot! W.I.T.C.H. Reboot!
hi love! so, with the plethora of reboots kicking around mainstream media these days, its no surprise that the question of a w.i.t.c.h reboot has been broached by its fans. i have so, so, so many thoughts and this, but ill divide them into three categories for the purpose of brevity: firstly, general thoughts on what i would like to see if a w.i.t.c.h reboot is on the cards; secondly, what i would like to see in a live-action w.i.t.c.h reboot; and finally, what a decent animated reboot of w.i.t.c.h might entail. this is not an exhaustive list so please feel free to add onto this if youve any more thoughts! without further ado because jesus, we might be here a while….
general thoughts:
a w.i.t.c.h live action reboot should largely use the comics are source material. while the cartoons are beloved by many including myself, i reckon the good parts of each should be combined to be thematically consistent, fix plot holes etc. but the comics should be the bible here
the target demographic of younger women and girls would need to be established early on by the producers (personally i would love to see a slightly more mature, w.i.t.c.h college AU where the target demographic could be teens/young adult women and girls, but more on that later). this isnt to say that young men and boys would be absolutely excluded as an audience, but misogyny is alive and well in 2019, and our voices as women need to be uplifted. this is exemplified by the fact that caleb was given far, far, far too much screentime in the cartoon so that the show could reach a young, male audience, and his characters was mangled by chauvinistic tendencies. thank u, next.
i have my own preferences wrt to ships, but i think we can all agree that introducing male characters as mere plot devices for drama/conflict only to put them ‘on a bus’ when theyre no longer useful is just plain bad writing. this is a critique levelled both at the cartoon and comics, but largely the comics (see: Eric)(rip in peace).
i also believe that sticking to the conventions of a particular genre, or hybrid genre, would be preferable if a w.i.t.c.h reboot were to take place. some shows get it right, but I’ve seen a ton of shows go off the rails when they try to be a fantasy/comedy/crime/drama/horror/sci-fi/occult/soap-opera extravaganza all in one. i reckon a YA fantasy drama with comedic moments, something with a similar vibe to Shadowhunters or The Shannara Chronicles, could work really well. if we’re talking animated reboot, something with a similar tonal atmosphere to The Dragon Prince or Into the Spiderverse, would also be great
this shouldnt even need to be said but please, for the love of god, no musical episodes (heres looking at you, Riverdale).
i think i speak on everyones behalf when i say that, irrespective of the age demographic of the show, LGBT rep in w.i.t.c.h would be amazing. irma/cornelia have always been a practically canon fan favourite, but cassidy and nerissa’s relationship is definitely more than strictly platonic, so that could be developed upon too. trans/nonbinary!will is also a popular headcanon that could work. once there are lgbt heroes, and not just lgbt villains, i think we’ll all be happy.
similarly, seeing some neurodivergency in the characters could also be great: elyon dealing with pts after the fallout with phobos; irma struggling with adhd in school or college; hay lin and taranee also exhibit some traits of anxiety in canon. autistic!will would also work, and someone else in the squad is bound to be affected by depression given its pervasive nature these days.
much and all as i adore the guardian outfits, i think there would need to be a few changes made. the midriff-and-leg-baring get-ups, though very cute, become very jarring when you realise the characters are meant to range in age from 12 to 14. i dont have any specific thoughts on how improvements could be made, but lengthening hemlines could be a start. if anyone has any more thoughts, i’d love to hear them!
of course, there needs to be women in the writers room, lgbt people in the writers room, poc in the writers room, people with neurodivergencies in the writers room, etc. we all know what happens when writers rooms lack diversity, and it sure as hell aint pretty.
body diversity was something that was tentatively approached in the comics (irma is curvier than the others, at least in her mundane form), but eschewed almost entirely in the cartoon, with all the girls maintaining similar heights and waifish proportions. it would be worthwhile, not to mention realistic, for the girls to go through some body-image hang ups. maybe will is insecure about her ‘underdeveloped’ body, or maybe taranee longs to have the same curvaceous figures as other dancers her age. i think if they were to go for a message of body positivity, irma, loud and brash with no fucks to give, should love every inch of her fat body and encourage the girls to adopt her 'devil-may-care’ attitude. the patriarchy be damned.
one flaw with the comics AND the cartoons are that they dont really explore the worldbuilding a lot. we do spend some time on meridian in the comics and the cartoon, but largely from the perspective of either elyon, or caleb and the rebels. i wonder what a day on meridian would look like for the average meridianite peasant? what do meridianites do for fun? what language(s) do they speak? what are their religious/spiritual belief(s)? what are the styles of dress dictated by? meridian is based on medieval societies, and a caste system is suggested, but i would have loved to see the social hierarchies expanded on a little more. does the matriarchal nature of meridian rule value women and their labour? what about LGBT people on meridian? people with disabilities and neurodivergencies? is there any discrimination against the different species on meridian? in fact, i dont know if it was ever explicitly outlined to us the different species of peoples on meridian, in the cartoon or the comics. honestly id be happy to see a filler, AtLA Tales of Ba Sing Se-esque episode on meridian to cover all of these bases
one thing i loved from the comics that didnt translate as well in the cartoon were the girls’ passions and interests. will is obsessed with frogs, she rides her bike to her job at pet store, she swims, stresses over math homework. irma loves music and talking to her pet turtle, leafy; i could totally see her doing a stint at the college radio station or working part time at a record store. cornelia loves ice skating and has received tons of awards and accolades for her achievements on the ice. taranee is an avid photographer and dancer, but i could totally see her spending her spare time at rallies and protests too. hay lin is a proficient artist, making her own clothes and poring over paintings between shifts at the silver dragon. all of these things and more are what make these characters so well-rounded, relatable, likeable. their hobbies need to be weaved into the fabric of the show (not just brought up once for a silly plot device in cornelia’s case, or never brought up at all in taranee’s, as seen in the cartoon) in order for it to work
live action reboot thoughts:
this should go out without saying, but a live action w.i.t.c.h reboot should cast actors of colour to play characters of colour. hay lin, and by extension her family, need to be played by Chinese actors, while taranee needs to be played by a black actor, preferably one of east asian descent, etc. if they add a little more diversity to the cast i would be totally pleased. latina!irma is a popular headcanon that i ascribe to, and will has always been kinda ambiguously brown, so adding less ambiguous representation for poc to the cast would really be excellent
of course, age-appropriate casting is a must. more specifically, there should not be any 25-30 year olds playing characters in their mid-late teens, unless ofc they could actually pass for the age they are trying to play. shows like The OA and The End of the Fucking World really get this right (most other teen/YA dramas, not so much. less of the chiseled abs and rock hard pecs on teens, please)
this one might be tricky to get right, particularly with budget constraints, but i think a really good CGI/visual effects team is necessary for a w.i.t.c.h reboot to work. unless an adequate amount of the budget is spent on making sure the magic looks realistic, almost plausible, it will make everything else look cheap by comparison
also, this is more of a personal preference, but i’d love to see someone with a really beautiful visual aesthetic and scope of cinematography. i’m talking Sense8-esque levels of cinematographic beauty
i’m really rambling now but, similarly, it’d be so cool to see someone who could use lighting/colour theory in very particular ways. in Marvel’s Netflix Originals, each character has their own theme colour; in Jessica Jones, for example, all of the scenes are very blue and almost leeched of warmth, while in Luke Cage there seems to be a warm yellow filter over everything. how cool would it be if all Taranee-centric scenes had a slight gold hue? or if all of cornelia’s scenes were lit with green? maybe all of the colours could combine in the a subtle yet effective way when all of the guardians are together to show their unity and combined strength.
thoughts on an animated reboot:
i know very little about animation so these thoughts will be brief, but an art and animation style something like that of Into the Spiderverse would be really gorgeous. it is fluid, dynamic, beautiful to look at and, most importantly, reflects the comic format in a moving image perfectly. alternatively, the animation studio behind The Legend of Korra could also be wonderful. the visual effects used for magic would look absolutely incredible
one thing i have to praise the Jetix cartoon for is their choice of voice actors, which were, in many cases, spot on. while cornelia’s VA was annoying and shrill, the actors playing characters of colour were themselves people of colour. if an animated reboot was on the cards, i think it could be a great opportunity to once again include some diversity to the cast, namely hiring actors of colour to play characters of colour
please let no one who worked on voltron near a w.i.t.c.h animated reboot with a ten foot pole. no i will not elaborate
tl;dr at the risk of sounding like an entitled millennial, a w.i.t.c.h reboot should be less about creating something entirely new for a brand new audience, and more about building on what the longtime fans of w.i.t.c.h already love and bringing it forward for the older generation. all on all, we grew up with w.i.t.c.h, so it’s time for us to have our reboot. thanks for coming to my TED talk!

The Foster Voltron Au long post I can't get on my computer with my foot wrapped up and elevated
I see this whole thing as super atmospheric. I want to write. It I can't write now. Ugh. So. Lance's family is a foster home. Originally, his parents moved from Cuba to the western us and then to the west coast. They had one daughter of their own before the transition. They found out about foster care being a good option, both grew up in big families with "distant" relatives. So just people who lives in the same street who came and went throughout their lives. Lances mom was ecstatic, his dad wary about the challenges that comes with foster and yes adoption because they're talked about that possibility. Years later, say about ten. They've had kids come and go and have done a great job at helping them set up for the Rest of their lives. Particular guests are older kids, the ones who don't have a chance anymore but some of Mamas ™Love to help guide them and they get that chance. So officially, Lance has four siblings. The twins, and the oldest sister. And then there are like. Five foster kids two come and go because they are the oldest and getting ready to move out. So yes, nine siblings. The eldest sister lives nearby, she runs the community center that their dad founded. Lance is the "oldest son". He's trans, has ADHD and is fiercely devoted to family and helping people. The twins are both boys, and rowdy AF. But good kids because mama ain't raise no heathens we respect people and Faith no matter what and who they are. Katie and Matt are two of the five kids, parents died in a car wreck and Matt is the third oldest. The other two are the ones leaving right? One of them is Hunk and they other is a girl named Shay. (Yes indeed ) the lasts kid is probably gonna be like. Rolo or the girl whose name I forgot. Well along comes Keith, high key troubled. The foster care just can't do it anymore. His parents died young, and he's been in and out and thrown all around the place. The Foster care system from where he's from was terrible (look up Asian Foster cares systems, I know that's vague but real talk there's a large issue with Foster care just not being existent in some Asian countries.) and Keith got tossed out into the real world too young. Well, at some point he bonded with this older kid. Shiro. Who had been the kid of one Foster family. Well he caused problems at school, and the system isn't kind- so they took him away. Kicking and screaming and promising to be good if he can stay with shiro. And shiro promises to find him, Ofc he does because dammit he will. Well Keith winds up in lances hodge Podge family. And he's Troubled™ aka he is just a sad depressed and anxious boy who never got help. Could be autistic I'm no sure yet. Need me some more Keith head canons. Like these! -Keith has two bags he always takes. .one is clothes and some stuff of his parents (his mothers veil, his dad's hunting knife) .in both are various books he's collected and stolen .The other is an old canvas bag with paint inside. He picked this up young with one of the first good families he came across. And older couple... Good people who were too old and he was their last Foster child. He keeps in touch actually. (Lowkey they put him into their will. And they love him still and have always had an open home to him but the system wouldnt allow it. Could be a plot point later on) So. Keith has like. No good things to say. He is bitter AF. And he keeps his bags tucked close. So of course Lance is "assigned" to help him feel at home. They give him the top bedroom, it was hunks but hunk is moving out so Keith can have it. Lance is petty™ eve cause hunk is his best friend. Hunk promises to keep in touch. He is staying on the coasts because he feel in love with the community. Shay may just be staying because she feel in love with something else. Ok I'm running out of steam. Keith sets up his space, what thinks will be another temporary. He has a view of the ocean and uses that to paint on random pieces of paper and wood. Lance was bitter but then he realizes he wants to help the guy. So he tries. Lance sings and plays guitar. And he does some amateur photography And he really loves Keith's paintings. So he takes more Photos and leave a them for Keith because the guy is almost a shut in. They slowly become friends. And lodge becomes a friend. And Keith tells Lance about shiro and the families and Lance talks about being trans and adopted and then promises to help Keith find shiro and help Keith because Best Friends ™ because Keith never had one. There will be story lights, Keith will paint Lance. Lance will suffer a case of "Mamma I'm gay for the boy" "But Lance the bit of fragile don't be too gay. Also I'm proud of you but clean your damn room " Shiro will eventually come into play. Idk how.
