That one post about great domestic policy and HORRIFIC foreign policy just does not stop being true
Domestic Policy Win: The American Museum of Natural History in NYC is closing down two entire exhibits of Native American belongings in order to comply with a federal order that requires museums to obtain the consent of indigenous nations in order to display artifacts of native origin. The linked ProPublica article specifies that the exhibits in question are the Eastern Woodlands and Great Plains Halls. To quote:
The new federal regulations, which went into effect this month, prohibit the display of items subject to NAGPRA without tribal consent and ban all research done without tribal consent. In addition, the regulations closed a loophole that had allowed museums such as the American Museum of Natural History to keep ancestral remains and burial items by claiming that they are “culturally unidentifiable” — meaning in their view they could not be connected to present-day Indigenous communities based on available evidence — and therefore could not readily be returned to tribes.
Foreign Policy Fail: The United States, the UK, and several other nations, in response to claims that several members of UNRWA were involved in the Oct. 7th attacks, have cut funding to the relief agency in question. The Al Jazeera article profiles the Palestinian response, and also specifies that this funding was pulled after the UNRWA launched an investigation in response to Israel's allegations that 12 members of the relief agency were involved.
Australia, Canada, Italy and the United States said they would halt funding to the agency, while European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the 27-member bloc would “assess further steps and draw lessons based on the result of the full and comprehensive investigation”. Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom then also joined the list of countries pausing financial aid to the UN agency, whose facilities where displaced Palestinians sought shelter have been repeatedly attacked in Israeli air raids. Ireland and Norway, however, expressed continued support for UNRWA, saying the agency does crucial work to help Palestinians displaced and in desperate need of assistance in Gaza. - Al Jazeera
"One million displaced people are currently taking refuge in and around UNRWA buildings. They are the ones who will suffer as a result of this decision," said Mr Gunness, adding: "The curtailing of UNRWA services will also destabilise the region at a time when Western governments are trying to contain a regional conflagration." [...] The US, Germany and the EU are among some of UNRWA's biggest donors. - BBC
Unfortunately, the WSJ article is paywalled, so I can't access the full thing for a quote.
Anyway. Call your reps. I'm not even talking to just the Americans this time, call your fucking reps. If they aren't donating to UNRWA, then make them do something. Is the organization possibly a security risk, and the concerns legitimate? Maybe! But you cannot cut the funding that is keeping 2.3mill people alive on an already shoestring budget and not immediately put a backup security net in place.
Until then, pick a charity with a good rating, donate and signal boost it, and politely harass your politicians.
Politely as in "don't shout at or cuss out the staffers that man the phone lines," because they are not your reps, but also because your number is going to get blocked and then you won't be able to pressure them in the future. Do be firm, though.
I'm personally picking the PCRF this time, since one of the three remaining hospitals in south Gaza has been evacuated and shut down, and the evacuees reportedly include women who just got C-sections, which means the evacuees also include newborns, and medical care is in high demand. They're also currently focused on providing clean drinking water to the people of Palestine. That said, so is food, and shelter, and winter clothing. Pick a need, find a charity, and toss them some money.

I tried to use search before asking, so apologies if this has already been covered, but I was wondering - what's the dynamic between humans and housepets in BB? The original books tend to frame housecat life as dull and stifling even in the eyes of housecats themselves, in line with the popular opinions among people who oppose the idea of keeping cats indoors. Is that maintained here, maybe in light of the fact that cats in this universe are highly intelligent animals whose needs are less likely to be met by the common pet owner, or are there housecats in BB who are happy with their housefolk? Are there housecats who see and bond with their housefolk as family? How well do humans meet their pets' needs, broadly speaking; does Albion hold similar perspectives and/or policies to the UK on cat care and stray management as far as indoor-outdoor?
This is where the logical conclusion of cats having been sapient all along kind of starts to clash with canon's... weird thoughts on what normal cats should be able to do
For the record: Unequivocally I advocate for keeping cats inside. Outdoor cats are bad, for the cat and for the environment. This goes for the UK too, your cat is not special, it is a killing machine, England did not evolve to accommodate millions of free predators.
(An overpopulation of predators starves and kills the excess, and then prey populations rise in turn in a natural cycle. Domestic animals are fed by humans which keeps the population artificially high, interrupting this cycle)
But, the thing is:
REAL cats are not sapient. They're animals. BB cats have human intelligence.
(Even canon... that's not a cat. Cats don't form language, or make government, or have a concept of land stewardship.)
SO here's how things are different in Albion;
Only domestic cats are sapient. Something about domestication quirked cats, specifically.
This ONLY hit cats; probably because they domesticated themselves instead of on purpose by humans.
Lynxes, servals, lions, etc, exist but are nonsapient.
Probably because of their ancestry, cats don't naturally form large, structured society. The average clowder is a loosely connected group of friends and family.
It's normal and not damaging for cats to go several months living alone, unlike a human. They don't NEED to live in groups.
So culture can die pretty quickly if a clowder is interrupted in some way. They don't have a problem with taking their closest relatives and striking out.
SEE: The Nomadic Group that BB!Jake/Sparrow is part of, Wind Coalition homesteads, the cats that live in the various farms above Ravenpaw and the Barleys.
3 - 5 is the group average. Usually half of the members will be related and kittens leave at a certain age (usually 2 or 3)
15 cats is a large clowder. Clan cats are an anomaly with densely populated "Clans."
but Clan cats are absolutely put to shame by the tribe, which has 3 Wards which are practically cat cities of 50+
The most common types of romance closer resemble BloodClan's matriarchy or Smoky's polycule. Clan cat romance is also an anomaly.
The average size of a litter is 2, as opposed to canon which is 3, and opposed to reality which is 4 - 8
They are also very unlikely to ever birth more than 6 litters. Most reproductive cats will have 2.
Like humans, they also don't have a litter at the first onset of puberty. First litters tend to come around 2 years.
So to begin with, these cats aren't like real ones. A single pair of real cats can have over a hundred children in their lives.
They also have a more drawn-out adolescence. 6 months is the START of puberty; similar to being a 13-year-old human.
But anyway, onto HOUSECATS
Unequivocally the best way of life, even for these cats.
They do have a habit of jimmying open objects, more than real cats. There is a large market for "pet aware" design, like inlaid locks on windows, chains on fridges, and jams in drawers.
However. They are just as lazy.
Feline-specialist biologists have to come up with "tricky" trials to test their intelligence. Cats do not care about pleasing humans like dogs do.
Rural areas are best for keeping these cats. They do really well on farms.
People who keep cats in car-infested or dense areas are advised to keep their cats indoors. Not only are cars and crowds a danger, but ferals are often hostile towards so much crowding.
In some ways, you can compare these cats to monkeys more than cats, with their troop structures.
AND SPEAKING OF MONKEYS...
Like monkeys, problem clowders are subject to animal control raids. It is NOT unheard of that a clowder gets territorial or starts biting people.
Usually the individual cat is captured and dealt with. Sometimes the problem is so bad that there will be a roundup.
That's excessively rare though. These are very politically unpopular, people love cats.
And cats love people! There's really bad and awful people out there, and really bad and awful cats; but they're the exception, not the rule.
There's a sentiment in the universe that dogs are direct and cats are roundabout; cats are occupied with puzzle toys and novelty, dogs like to be commanded.
They respond to music like parrots. Jessy can change a record in her owner's victrola. Her owner is a himbo and just thinks it's a trick her previous owner taught her, not stopping to question how she had an old owner who also had a victrola and taught her how to change records. In 2012
Cats are still easy to keep, in spite of all the additions. A really smart cat can be entertained with toddler toys. Most are fine with a friend and 30 mins of playtime a day.
They do a lot of sleeping.
Most cats do get neutered and spayed at 6 months. Housecats don't usually see it as a big deal, or chalk it up to the price of a good home.
Clan cats find that SHOCKING and sickening. How can you think something like that is not a big deal??
But they just... don't. BloodClan too.
Clan cats are taught to fear lots of aspects of housecat life, which feeds into their xenophobia. It wasn't always THIS bad-- it really turned for the worst under Flystar of SkyClan.
But anyway forget them for a moment
There ARE a few downsides of being a housecat. There's a total lack of agency here, for one
Bumble and Turtle Heart couldn't control their owners adopting Tom. Twolegs often take kits at a certain age, and you may never know where they went.
A human can die and not have a home for you to go to. They can be abusive or neglectful. A new one can be brought in who hates or can't be around cats.
Problems, but, not INHERENT ones y'know? Most housecats do have good homes.
Anyway, TL;DR
BB!Cats are slightly different than real cats because I am leaning into the fact that they speak a real language, with the higher intelligence that implies.
In addition, I treat Housecats as a "Culture" to fix, on the same level as the other canon groups that get treated as inferior to Clan cats (Tribe, Guardians, etc). "Culture" because, obviously, Every Single Housecat Ever doesn't share a culture lmao. But I hope that makes sense.

only daughter to a rich guy anomaly. the watanabes own a multinational chemical company based in japan known for their polymer development and production
contrary to public opinion, her dad thinks being different is just another way to know god is on his side and that he’s one of “His Chosen Ones”
(if it isnt obvious already, the guy is fairly religious and this is the one (1) time where his traditional mindset ironically seems progressive in how accepting? it is when it comes to those w abilities)
otherwise, typical run of the mill man who uses piousness to his convenience and thinks 1950s-esque casual sexism can still fly in this day and age
instead of being discouraged by this, a creature of spite like urs truly is only driven to work harder better faster stronger wherever she can exert herself to prove her worth. it helps that there’s no one else lined up to take over the family business
also very helpful to discover at 13 you’re an anomaly too when you accidentally disintegrate your 2nd stepmom’s hand in a fit of teen rage
gets used to having to “integrate” into normal society once she’s sent overseas for an esteemed k-12 education in the uk. for a long while, the nullivi patch is a non issue, and any few inconsequential accidents were just that. inconsequential
by the time she’s applying for universities her dad’s on wife #4 and wants his only kid to be closer in spite of his flaws. off to sua she goes on the compromise that it’s close enough to him but it's also not right under his nose tfg
when undergrad is over and done with, dad brings up discussions of marriage like this is the 1800s or something, to which eri’s like “lemme finish my master’s first then i’ll think about it (:”
fast forward to the completion of her master’s: before dad can even think to bring up marriage prospects again eri says “wow a doctorate…imagine how cool and conveniently time consuming that would be…….”
so that’s how she’s still here, 7 years and counting!
contrary to her kind sunshine princess face eri’s ur textbook prissy too-serious-for-her-own-good ambitious go getter. its not that she’s mean persay but ms girl constantly gives off the vibes that she has bigger fish to fry with no time for trivial bullshit
the type where if it takes 10 minutes too long to make her latte she will head over to the other side of the counter and start making it herself
on the flip side, once she’s committed to anyone and anything she’s alll the way in. u can count on her for ride or die like loyalty if nothing else…..
stays well out of campus politics because she thinks she’s above it lol……the patch is kind of annoying though when she’s trying to conduct research (on developing durable polymer materials) so that’s one of the rare times it comes off
plot ideas (so bad at coming up w these on the fly omg so sorry 😭)
youre the barista who took too long to make her iced latte and was either humiliated on the spot when she made her way over to YOUR side of the shop to make it herself or u are grateful that’s one less order to deal with
she was a TA for one of ur classes and what u thought would be one of the easiest courses ever turned out to be an absolute nightmare
someone who decided it was worth pursuing her, lemme ask you this: Why would u put urself thru that
band of brothers aka other grad students who just get it
friends……. 🥹
if none of these work i’m chill with brainstorming too just hmu

I will never understand the blatant cruelty of some of these reviews, and coming from different people, not just one or two pricks. You read this and you go “whoah”, like it’s unbelievably unprofessional and cruel and any person with a bit of heart and brain would judge more whoever wrote this than the person he writes about. Plus noone with any taste in music can claim H is talented and charismatic - the man is a walking joke, even looks wise these days. I just do not understand, why spit in their own faces like that, putting their name next to such a piece of trash writing?
Harry aside, why do critics go out of their way to write about someone they consider beneath the attention of mainstream musicians and critics?
It’s literally an oxymoron, to spend five precious columns telling people they shouldn’t listen to this one ex-1D dude that isn’t on anyone’s radar anyway, according to them. “He’s worthless, his music is bad, he’s ugly, he’s crude, he can’t sing,” — but that’s true of millions of musicians out there.
Why do they care so much about this particular one, Louis Tomlinson?
Why do they all quote the same two bad UK reviews? Why rehash the tragedies that have caused him so much pain?
Why do they all pull out the comparisons to Harry and to Robbie Williams, whose music doesn’t even sound like Louis’? Is it because they were the “breakout guys” from their boy bands, and Solo Louis isn’t supposed to exist, because that upsets the law of the pop music universe?
Why do all the critics sound like industry bots spitting out soundbites? These “critics” care so much about originality, but ironically they all sound exactly the same.
Maybe Louis’ success proves that it’s neither talent nor critical acclaim nor manufactured awards that give “breakout stars” their success, but actual good music, hard work, and an honest connection to fans.
Louis has upset the laws of boyband trajectories. He was supposed to stay quiet and take his losses and go away. Dan Wootton wrote out Sony’s postband plans for them in 2015. These guys were supposed to hate each other and Harry would shoot ahead in his natural triumph, alone, with Niall being a distant but trusty sidekick. Everyone would fall in line, like it or not.
In 2015, Louis was made out to be a party boy, a dad, a reality show judge, an AR man, and a joke. Right?
So what happened to that plan? How did Louis make two albums, with the second an ebullient and joyful shout that gave us 21 songs? Surely his tour is just a consolation prize, right? Right? His career couldn’t possibly be thriving?!

(Disclaimer: I've mostly watched Whose Line is it Anyway UK from the 90s, but I've seen a fair number of the Drew Carey episodes and a few of the Aisha Tyler ones. And I do love this show unconditionally.)
I completely understand the point of view that a lot of Whose Line is homophobic, especially shows from the earlier days. But I want to explain something.
Yes, none of the main cast was queer irl (though some guests were), or at least not out at the time. Yes, basically they played being gay for laughs. There are a few reasons for this that I think aren't entirely invalid:
As a predominantly-male ensemble, there were inevitably scenarios where a guy would have to play a female character and/or the romantic interest of another guy, such is improv.
Even when there were female players in the show, the male players weren't as physically comfortable with them as they were with each other. There must have been dozens of times that two of the guys kissed (and also the Josie/Caroline boob grab is a classic!), but was there ever a M/F kiss at all? [Edit: Yes. Yes, there were several apparently. But it was definitely less common!]
As a live(ish) show, they reacted to audience response, and the audience always responded very enthusiastically to the "gay stuff" so they went there a lot, that's show biz.
So here's the thing. Although maybe not everything they did is unobjectionable by today's standards, I think it was an important step at the time toward queer representation. Even if none of the actors was queer, this show still played holy hell with gender roles in a way that hadn't really been done before on mainstream TV, at least in the US. And audiences were there. For. It.
This was a time when you hardly ever saw a same-sex kiss in a normal primetime TV show, but it would happen in this show, and the cheering would bring the house down. The "gay stuff" was funny, it was supposed to be, but it was more than that. People wanted to see it. People wanted it to be out there in mainstream media. The jokey, silly premise let it get past the censors, but once it was out there, it did something else. It normalized. I really think it helped pave the way for better representation.
(Which now lets us look back on those old shows and think how cringey they were. But that's one way to measure progress, is what I'm saying.)

I remember trying out the Whose Line rivival when it first aired. I watched the first 2-4 episodes. To me anyway, it lost its vibe. The performers were fine, but the host didn't really perform with them and it seemed like there was a barrier between them that the performers were unwilling ti cross. Also, the end of every episode was an advertisement for another WB/CW show.
Yeah I haven't checked out the new version of the show but that's more or less the vibe I got from it just from the clips and such I've seen online. I'm sure it's still funny but if you were a fan of the original, the vibe just doesn't seem the same.
This is probably how the UK felt about the American version of the show... (although I think the American version is a TON better than the original British version)
