Any other socially anxious ambiverts (and loud/chatty introverts) who just feel enormously validated by how open Joey Batey is about himself, and also just by the... willingness he is to show the different sides of himself to the world, even though he clearly finds some of it rather nervewracking? I just... he’s out there breaking any number of stereotypes about how people with anxiety problems do things. Being silly and chaotic and charming and ridiculous and loving and also vulnerable and honest and thoughtful and open. And, from what I can see, managing what he can and can’t handle on the internet wisely and well.

I mean, the main reason I crush on him is that he’s one of the best songwriters I’ve come across in recent years (one effect of which is that I am doing a hell of a lot more songwriting myself right now, not in imitation but because he just makes me want to fricking CREATE ALL THE SONGS). The fact that he’s ridiculously pretty and a breathtakingly good actor and amazing singer and instrumentalist is a glorious bonus.

But I’m enjoying being a “Witcher” and TAD fan as much as I am partly because of the man himself, or at least what I know of him. I don’t want to idolise him*, that would be grossly unfair, he’s bound to mess up eventually as we all do. But.. still feeling very encouraged by his words and how he does stuff.

I hope he can carry on enjoying his newfound fame as much and as smoothly as possible. Please let’s all be really lovely and considerate to/about him, and Madeleine too? They’re both deeply precious and oh goodness are we lucky to have their work and presence in these dark times. I feel like Joey especially has made himself... extremely vulnerable with his fans over the last few weeks. Let’s keep on being worthy of the trust he’s given us. <3

*Okay, except maybe as a songwriter, and as part of TAD with Madeleine Hyland. I just... the last time I was this excited about discovering a new musician it was I think another Northumbrian folk songer/songwriter who deals in dark fairytales (albeit very differently), the glorious Emily Portman. And that was, ooh, 10 years ago now? This is... aaaah. Probably life-changing; definitely life-sustaining.
