Anonymous inquired: i place an idea on the altar to Miranda: merfolk occasionally show affection to those they trust with headbutts. Now, when you're a several hundred pound lump of scale and muscle minding your bonus under the water, a light friend bonk is nothing since the water absorbs most impact as is. But for land folk it probably knocks them over and could be a bit dangerous if the merfolk doesn't watch their strength.

(( Funnily enough: you’ve hit the nail on the head here well enough that this is already canon!

The details are a little different — the water isn’t what softens the blows, but rather, it’s the fact that merfolk have good control on how softly or heavily they’re hitting something, and what they’re hitting is a lump of scales and muscles themselves. In fact, merfolk can and do kill prey by ramming it to death, being fully able to hit 35mph while swimming and having a hard, heavy skull to smash into things.

Headbutting specifically is also specifically a play behavior. Still friendly, of course, but it’s a bit comparable to lightly punching someone’s shoulder, or ruffling their hair. It’s an invitation to play, a gesture that opens up the receiving party to chase the initiator, or otherwise to get headbutted back in turn. It’s right up there with nipping, slapping, thumping, chasing, or other harmless gestures of roughhousing!

And lastly, headbutting is far from the only thing that a merfolk can do that’ll accidentally harm their non-merfolk friends. It goes back to the scales I mentioned before — the vast majority of merfolk have only ever interacted with other merfolk, and when they interact with someone else, they tend to default back to treating the other as a merfolk because they’re legitimately not used to anything else. They have large claws, and big jaws, and even just their large muscles and the way that they move around can be dangerous. They don’t mean to harm anyone, and they probably aren’t even thinking of that at all, but they’re not used to people having skin instead of scales, or having such wildly different bodyplans from theirs.

Miranda doesn’t have to worry about this as much, not anymore. She’s spent the most time on land as any merfolk in a long, long time, and she spends more of her time with landfolk than with merfolk. There’s a reason why her touch is constantly described as so delicate and careful, and it’s because of her claws, and hands, and having to constantly make sure she’s not about to hurt someone. She’s figured out how much is too much and how to interact with landfolk without accidentally tearing open their skin, so while mistakes still happen, Miranda’s much better about it compared to other merfolk who haven’t even seen a picture of a human before.

But most other characters have only ever seen one merfolk in their lives, and if they never begin to discuss the Merkingdom and get close to Miranda enough to possibly be invited back to her kingdom, then they’ll never truly understand how different Miranda is, even from her own peers.
