Meet Lillian Boyer. She is just one of the many women who were the inspiration for Grace in Nothing But Sky. Like many women of her time (early 1920s), Lillian was seen as a novelty. Her feats of daring, swinging 500 feet above ground while dangling from the wing of a plane, were not deemed to be worth more than a few lines of ink on the page at the time. But Lillian was astounding in every right. She was the first woman to successfully jump from a speeding car onto a ladder hanging precariously from a low-flying plane. She was also the first woman to hang below the wing of plane by only a small wire clenched between her teeth. Like her other daredevil pals Ethel Dare and Mabel Cody, she would dance through the sky on the wing of a plane with only gravity and the force of the wind keeping her aloft. She almost never wore a parachute, saying they restricted her performances. During Women’s History Month we seem to always give kudos to the same names and faces (which are of course worth recognition), but brave and determined women like Lillian deserve notice as well. She tested the skies at every moment and still lived a long and fruitful life. About once a year I have the horrible and degrading job of searching the web for sites that have illegal downloads of my books. If you do not have the money to buy a book, this may seem like a great way to read something you can’t otherwise afford. I get it. Times are hard. But please do not think that what you are doing is NOT hurting authors. There have been countless posts by important writers about how their novels being downloaded illegally has kept them from either writing more books for a publisher or keeping them from finishing a series. The truth is that a lot of us authors make less money than you think from each purchased book - so when they are downloaded illegally it is a serious punch to our bottom line. Imagine poring your heart and soul into something you love for years. The road is hard but finally that thing you love is put out into the world. Now imagine people stealing that one precious thing from you. If you think about pirating books within this context, it is extremely heartbreaking. With these posts there are people who will comment about authors being petty, but the truth is if you really want to read that book you can request it from the library. If you don’t have access to a library, I’m sorry but that still does not make it okay to take money away from an author. Most of us want to keep writing and bringing stories to readers, but it’s hard to do that when we can barely make a living. Rest and rebirth. To me everything in publishing feels very cyclical. There are moments of joy and despair. I compare it to how flowers flourish in the spring and fall in Arizona. When the air is cool and has a hint of moisture every living thing flourishes. It’s like after the intense heat things that were once dormant are alive again. I too have been in that place of dormancy. Sitting back and quietly working. Now, there are new things on the horizon and I feel myself growing again. It’s important to remember that in any long career their are both low and high points. Writing Friends Challenge Day 29: An Author Moment I’d Like To Repeat For years I’d go to my local Barnes and Noble and walk through the YA section dreaming about the day my book would be on the shelf. In my debut year, I got that moment. This sign was placed prominently outside my local B&N on my signing day, and I burst into tears when I saw it. All those late night writing sessions, all those rejections, were suddenly worth it just to see my picture alongside some of my other local writing pals. I’ve been off for a couple of days and just catching up with this Writing Friends Challenge. Today’s question: First Draft or Revision? I hate drafting. I’m a pretty impatient person and I just want the story out of my head and on the page. I was also trained as a journalist so I draft with a pretty thin word count. Author Life Month 2021 Day 28: Dedication I think one of the coolest things about getting to do this job is interacting with readers. In several of the school visits I’ve done, I’ve had girls of varying age come up to me and say they really liked my dedication because it made them feel empowered. Author Life Month 2021 Day 25: Treat Yourself I’m a big believer in signs from the universe. When I’m working on a book and I see a T-shirt, or a piece of artwork, or a coffee cup with a saying that somehow touches on an element of my books, I buy it. For me it’s like a talisman. A good reminder that the book has purpose and meaning. When I was creating my office last year, I scoured the internet for artwork that I wanted to hang on the walls. I couldn’t find anything that spoke to me. Then one day I went into my local home store and this picture was up on the wall, beaming in a bright ray of light. I knew it was waiting for me to take it home. It was like a symbol, nudging at me, forcing me to remember that hard work and perseverance do indeed pay off! Now when I go into my office and I’m unmotivated to write I stare at this picture.
