[Series column] 2.5D Director Yoshitani Koutarou introduces the charm of young actors #13:  Asato Yuya

When we first met, I thought that he was a man with an air of mystery surrounding him. His amicable nature made him good at closing the distance between people. This was not just towards fellow actors, but also towards staff. He gets closer to you with a carefree smile and a joke or two.

Although he may come across as ditzy in nature, but he could fully understand the atmosphere and the work just from the insight he gains from his surroundings. He gives relevant advice to fellow cast members, and even shares his suggestions with the director.

He is none other than Asato Yuya.

You will be able to produce an ideal work with Asato-kun around. Actors use their bodies and hearts to express themselves, which is why it is only natural that the innate nature of that person can be seen. His acting has this kindness that comes from the heart, which gives off a huge sense of security especially in the roles he plays. As for his singing and dancing, he is good with his vocals and physical balance, and has strong performance ability.

In addition to that, his special quality is being able to perform naturally without forcing it. There are no unpleasant lines or unsightly movements. With him, the range of expressions for the character expands further, and his expressions seem to be warmly welcoming the audience.

Even in the productions that I'm directing, there are times when I get see Asato-kun's acting. I like how he expresses that kindness through his lines and his songs.  I'm sure that his performance has a purifying effect on the heart. If you do a voiceprint analysis of his voice, you will surely get such a number. (Could a professional or someone please help check!)

Also, as shared earlier, he is good at observing his surroundings – which he makes use of in his talk shows. In the past, I've been on several talk shows with him, he was able to talk to the guest at the right timing while observing his surroundings. He is not someone who is assertive. Through his movements, you could feel that he is not impatient nor being chased by a sense of mission.

I think he makes full use of the cheerful disposition of Okinawan people. Perhaps his number one motto as an actor is to bring joy to the person in front of him. And, his biggest reward as an actor are the smiles of his co-stars and staff, and of his audience. Well within the stars or threads of fate, I’m sure that this is his destiny. (Could a professional or someone please help check!)

When I searched the internet, his favorite foods are sweet Japanese curry and cinnamon toast. His specialty is rolled egg and omelet rice. His tongue is sensitive to heat so he has to let his food cool down before he can eat it. He loves children and animals, and is bad with horror and insects. Now isn’t that a gentle image?

He is a kind man who would observe his surroundings and allows other actors and his work to take centerstage. An important characteristic as an actor for Asato-kun would be his depth of expression – it’s an indispensable part of him.  I do look forward to performances which exudes his personality from now on.

Update 2

Another update for everyone! 

The Great World’s subtitles are basically finished! However, there are about 20 or so especially tricky lines that I still have sitting around, which I have asked a friend for a second opinion about. Hopefully we can figure out what in the world is going on with those lines and once we do, I can finally put up the file for distribution.

In the meantime, I have started on the subtitles for In the New World, where I’m about 30% into the process. Once again, I can’t provide a solid timeframe for when I would be finished with the NW subtitles, but I hope to work on it more extensively once Sakuracon is over and I have a little less extracurricular things to do as a result.

In other news, around the end of next month, the Hetamyu Final Live Photobook ‘Blooming’ will be releasing which I have had a pre-order for since the holiday season!

The book will be A4 sized (think a standard 8.5″x11″ piece of paper) and 120 pages of full color images from the live shows alongside an in-depth conversation between Nagae Ryouki (Italy’s actor) and Yoshitani ‘Kou-chan’ Koutarou (Hetamyu’s producer), and interviews with all of the main cast. My focus will continue to be more towards the main shows, but if I’m able to find the time, I have also been entertaining the thought of posting translations of Blooming’s content (and possibly even scans of the photobook’s images?). If I do decide to do so, they will be posted onto this blog intermittently.

"Revolutionary Girl Utena" Musical Conquers the Stage in March

  As part of the on-going celebration of the 20th anniversary of ground-breaking TV anime Revolutionary Girl Utena, a new musical stage play based on the series will be performed in March of 2018. The play is entitled Shōjo Kakumei Utena ~Shiroki Bara no Tsubomi~ ("Revolutionary Girl Utena - Bud of the White Rose"), and it will run from March 08 - March 13, 2018.

    The Revolutionary Girl Utena TV anime was originally broadcast in 1997. It features direction by Kunihiko Ikuhara and animation by J.C. Staff. The series is distributed in North America by Nozomi Entertainment under their Lucky Penny imprint, and the describe the story of Revolutionary Girl Utena as follows:

  "Never lose that strength or nobility, even when you grow up." When Utena was just a child and in the depths of sorrow, she found salvation in those words. They were the words of a prince, who wrapped her in his rose-scented embrace and bestowed upon her both a ring and the promise that it would lead her to him again. She never forgot the encounter. In fact, she was so impressed that she aspired to be like the prince and also help those in need. Now a spirited teenager, Utena attends the prestigious Ohtori Academy. However, her strong sense of chivalry soon places her at odds with the school's student council and thrusts her into a series of mysterious and dangerous duels against its members. 

    Based on the original work by Be-Papas, the new musical is written and directed by Koutarou Yoshitani and supervised by Kunihiko Ikuhara. The venue for the play has not yet been revealed.

Regarding Isogai Ryuuko’s Name

It’s been a while since I last saw stalked Ryuuko’s twitter. His bio is this:

and I was like, what? wha? Oh, the kanji changed.

Previously Ryuuko’s kanji name is 龍虎. 龍 = ryuu (dragon) and 虎 = tora (tiger).

During the Hetamyu Line Live on 28 June 2021, Ryoki and Yuuta asked why Ryuuko changed his kanji name. He said it’s embarrassing for a 30-something-year-old to have a “dragon” and “tiger” in his name (probably thought it’s childish) and wants something that feels “smarter” (more adult, elegant feels).

His kanji name now becomes 龍乎. 龍 = ryuu (dragon) and 乎 = ko (Google says it means question mark).

Apparently he (or more like the staff) updated his blog on 11 March 2019.

Thank you for always supporting Isogai Ryuuko (磯貝龍虎).

This time, on his 32th birthday, Isogai Ryuuko (磯貝龍虎) has decided to change his stage name to Isogai Ryuuko (磯貝龍乎).

The kanji in the name changed by one character, but there is no change in reading.

Along with this name change, he wishes to do his best to share a new world with everyone again.
