After receiving a letter from the boys of Hellas concerning a severe nervous breakdown of none other than Hans Giebenrath in class, it was only logical to Heilner, then, to make the trip down to the small town where his friend lived on the soonest holiday which luckily found itself only a few weeks away.

37. Is there a book that you think everyone should read??

yes I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

It’s a kids’ book. Target age range is ~8 years old. The first book is 500 pages. It’s a spy book for kids.

I read it for the first time when I was 8 and the fact that I remembered it at all speaks volumes to how good it is. But what really matters is what I remembered from it.

It shows that there are different kinds of intelligence. That as long as you get to the right place, you had a right answer.

It emphasizes found family, and that “unwanted” children are never unwanted, there’s always somebody.

It tells the reader that adults rarely listen to children, but that doesn’t mean that children’s thoughts and feelings aren’t real, it doesn’t mean that children are stupid or wrong, nor that adults are always right.

It shows that children can save the world. That children have power. That children are people.

It tells us that children can be heroes, and how horrible it is that they have to be.

As an adult, it holds up. I’ve talked to people twice my age - people who couldn’t have possibly read it before they were nearly 30 because it wasn’t out until then - who absolutely adore it.

The one thing I will say to adults who read it is to remember that this is a children’s book. It’s incredible - not despite being a children’s book, that isn’t a negative trait - and it is targeted towards children. So if it seems simple or predictable or boring to you, that’s because it wasn’t written for you. Judging children’s books by the same standards you use to judge adult books doesn’t work because they were written for brains that work differently. Please, remember it was written for children.
