Physicists explore mysteries of strange metals
Physicists are learning more about the bizarre behavior of "strange metals," which operate outside the normal rules of electricity.
Theoretical physicist Yashar Komijani, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati, contributed to an international experiment using a strange metal made from an alloy of ytterbium, a rare earth metal. Physicists in a lab in Hyogo, Japan, fired gamma rays at the strange metal to observe its unusual electrical behavior.
Led by Hisao Kobayashi with the University of Hyogo and RIKEN, the study was published in the journal Science. The experiment revealed unusual fluctuations in the strange metal's electrical charge.
"The idea is that in a metal, you have a sea of electrons moving in the background on a lattice of ions," Komijani said. "But a marvelous thing happens with quantum mechanics. You can forget about the complications of the lattice of ions. Instead, they behave as if they are in a vacuum."

Hey how well does Tom Lehrer's elements song hold up today?
Well, I mean. It was written in 1959 when there were only 102 discovered elements as opposed to today's 118, so it's obviously no longer accurate to the modern periodic table.
But if you're asking about my opinions of it musically, then it's... fine. It's a parody of the Major General's Song. The melody is a bit of an earworm, but after a bit the lyrics just kinda blend into each other. Not much to say about it tbh.
I would say that it probably took him a while to put them in an order that fit the tune, but I feel like a lot of that work would get done simply by the fact that the vast majority of elements end in -ium so you don't have to think too hard to make everything rhyme. I kind of wish that there was a pattern to what he was grouping together, but it doesn't seem like there is one besides the occasional attempt at alliteration? If there is one, feel free to let me know, but I am, ironically enough, not a big science guy, so I wouldn't know.
I feel like at this point it's just a thing that people like to memorize as a party trick (not throwing shade btw I was infamous for memorizing digits of pi when I was in school).

Ytterbium is a rare earth metal with the atomic symbol Yb and atomic number 70. It has a silvery-white appearance and is relatively soft and ductile. Ytterbium is often used in laser technology, atomic clocks, and other high-tech applications due to its unique electronic and optical properties.
A sputtering target is a material that is bombarded with high-energy ions to release atoms or molecules that can be deposited onto a substrate to form a thin film. In PVD, the sputtering process takes place in a vacuum chamber, where a high-energy plasma is created by applying a high voltage to a gas (typically argon). The plasma ions then collide with the sputtering target, causing atoms or molecules to be ejected and deposited onto the substrate.
Ytterbium sputtering targets are typically made from high-purity ytterbium metal and come in various sizes and shapes depending on the specific application. They are often used in the production of thin films for optical coatings, magnetic storage media, and electronic devices. The use of ytterbium sputtering can result in high-quality thin films with excellent adhesion and uniformity.

Yb: YAG
Ytterbium-doped YAG (Yb: YAG) is a kind of energetic laser crystal with laser wavelength of 1030 nm, which is one of one of the most encouraging laser energetic materials. It has a large absorption band of 18 nm at 940 nm. It is one of one of the most beneficial crystals for high power diode-pumped solid-state lasers and also is better for diode-pumped than standard neodymium-doped crystals. It can pump 0.94 µm and produce 1.03 µm laser outcome. Contrasted to typically made use of Nd: YAG crystals, Yb: YAG crystals have a larger absorption data transfer to minimize thermal administration needs on diode lasers, a much longer upstate life time, and also a three to four times lower thermal tons each pump power. The concentration of the dopant ranges from 0 to 30% of the changed yttrium atom. Yb: YAG fractional home heating is really low, incline efficiency is very high, no ecstatic state absorption and also upconversion, high mechanical toughness, high thermal conductivity. Yb: YAG can be pumped by trustworthy InGaAs laser diodes at 940 or 970 nm. Yb: YAG crystals are expected to change Nd: YAG crystals for high-power diode-pumped lasers and other prospective applications, such as their doubling wavelength of 515 nm, which is extremely near to the doubling wavelength of Ar ion lasers (514 nm), making it a sensible alternative to big volume argon ion lasers.
Yb: YAG shows terrific potential as a high power laser material. Industrial lasers are being created for a variety of applications, such as steel cutting as well as welding. With top quality Yb: YAG now offered, a lot more locations as well as applications are being checked out.
The benefits of Yb: YAG are excellent pump data transfer as well as send cross section. It is perfect for diode pumping. The wide absorption band allows Yb: YAG to keep uninterrupted pumping performance during normal thermal shifts in the diode output. High efficiency indicates that Yb: YAG laser crystals of reasonably tiny size will produce high power result. Based on the YAG master crystal, Yb: YAG can be promptly incorporated into the laser style process. This combination of attributes allows for straightforward and sophisticated laser layouts and also makes it simpler to manufacture high-power lasers.

Researchers use rare-earth metals in alloy powders to produce green, eye-catching sparklers
Sparklers can be a lot of fun—glimmering, fizzing and spitting out arcs of light from handheld sticks or tubes on the ground. But the metals that they're usually made with limit what the sparks can look like. Now, researchers in ACS Omega report that rare-earth metals in alloy powders can produce flashes that shift from golden to green and continuously branch.
Around the world, sparklers are brought out for holidays and special events, providing celebratory pops of light. While their flames can span the colors of rainbow, the flares shooting out have been limited to dark red, gold or bright white light.
Recently, Eike Hübner and colleagues found that burning powdered erbium (Er), a rare-earth metal, produces a new color-changing spark, shifting from golden-white to bright green. However, the green phase occurred for just a blip in time and wasn't really noticeable.
Another entertaining aspect of sparkler fountains are their branching sparks that burst apart repeatedly into multiple, smaller particles that flash. Commercial sparklers typically contain iron-carbon powders for this effect, but metal-metal alloys can also do this. So, Hübner and the team wanted to test whether rare-earth metal-metal alloys could be used to create brand-new types of color-changing or branching sparks.

WHAT IS BLENDER EDITION?
Blender Edition is a special edition that has more texture space (usually 2048x2048) and can be used only in Blender due to different UV Mapping. This edition allows you to create renders with more quality and flexibility than models exported from the game itself.
Archive with this edition contains .blend file, diffuse textures, normal maps and tutorials on how to use it.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Blender Editions will be available to Platinum and Diamond members only. Early Access doesn't apply to Blender Edition since this edition weren't made for the game and is basically a separate 3D model.
