I tried so hard to play Zampanio, but I just got confused and frustrated. I just want my damn inventory.
Might be the North isn't for you. Have you tried going back and checking for other directions? One of the Easts might appeal to you. Or South is the least confusing, arguably. Or if you're the type of person who refuses to go back till you've run out of forward, given how personalized Zampanio is, you might want to try different player types on for size. Some might have an easier time with their inventory.

zampanio is a very good game, you should play it(or not idk it's probably not for everyone)
ok so i've fallen into an arg. and keeping notes on it. the creator of the arg, in the most roundabout and inefficient way possible, told me to post my notes somewhere public, like ao3 or tumblr. so here i am. to do that, and also to recommend that arg to you, because posting a notes doc without context would be weird.
so, uh, yeah. zampaniosim is an arg made by @jadedresearcher, who also made sburbsim and dollsim(a homestuck doll creator) and a bunch of other stuff, most of which was homestuck-related. zampaniosim also has homestuck references, but it's mostly due to references to jr's prior works, and zampaniosim is actually entirely original based on a weird video game creepypasta which has seemingly disappeared off the face of the internet. but yeah it has a lot of references. to a lot of things, not just homestuck.
anyways it's a really cool arg and it's still ongoing! and it feels like it has a pretty low barrier to entry, especially due to the fact that, since it's been ongoing for 3 years, there are plenty of(or maybe only the 2-3 i have found) guides(under a very loose definition of guide) and a wiki that is probably more helpful than not. i've decided to make limited use of the guides and wiki, which has lead to a very fun experience, especially knowing i can fall back on them(or ask for hints from other fans) whenever i want. still, this limited approach has meant that i've barely scratched the surface.
if you want to get into zampaniosim, then i recommend starting here, but here(should include link to the prior link, but doesn't include it today unless there's an exception for first visit) or here(includes link to the prior link, as well as a few other things i haven't looked into nearly as much) can also be places to start. or you can just look at the farragofiction website as a whole, or jr's tumblr blog, or just google zampanio. im not your boss.
orrrrrr you could watch me as i explore zampaniosim!!! by looking at my notes!!! which are primarily designed for me to not forget things so they may make very little sense if you don't do any of the things mentioned in the last paragraph!!! but things making very little sense is kinda the point of zampanio so it's as good of an entry point as any, i guess. though i will note that it contains a ton of spoilers, for obvious reasons
since my notes doc being public is ostensibly the point of this post, im gonna post the link again, this time not inline!
zampanio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the Future
Thousands of sweeps into the future, a seadweller with pierced fins steps into the brooding caverns to begin work. Rhivar Kondez knows, or strongly assumes, they were sent through the planet’s mysterious Timehole as a grub - if they cannot return to the time they were supposed to live in, as no adult has ever passed through the hole, they still have a goal: flush as many of the planet’s limited grubs down the hole as possible. If they’re unlucky, the grubs will simply be sent to a happier time and place, able to live somewhere other than a depopulated rock. But if they are lucky, they will be able to stop the future they now inhabit.
Rhivar finds almost no other Caretakers in the caverns, but the four they do know are just as miserable as them. They agree, together, to bend the rest of their efforts to the same goal: preventing the rise of the stifling Empress Kendri and the abandonment of Al Torenn. It’s not a goal any of them have much certainty about. But it’s an idea they can all agree on: that this empress has absolutely devastated their planet, and that she is at fault for the final exodus of the local population.
At one point, the Fuschia of the group would have challenged the current empress for power and restored the planet to order through direct politics. But the empress had made herself thoroughly inaccessible, and Trelyn was still recovering from her recent paralysis - even if she had made her way to the empress’s fortress, the fight would have been a gruesome joke. So they gambled together, the five of them, hoping against hope that somewhere in the past, something would change and their lives would never need to have happened in the first place.
There is no guarantee. But Rhivar refuses not to try. It’s all they have left to work with.

I'm new to Zampanio, but from what I've seen, if there is a "true Zampanio" it is not any piece of art made, but what it is in the minds of people who are interested in it, and that fits to me with the idea of it being "scarily personalised" Ppl have probably come to smilar conclusions before tho sfhjfsdjhdf

What is your main quest? You've forgotten, at this point. There's an abundance of things to uncover, but surely nothing is around here. It's deserted. You've gone looking in all the wrong places to find answers.
What are you doing here? Don't you think this is straying a little too far from the beaten path? You start to wonder whether or not you should turn back. This seems like a colossal waste of time.
Or maybe not, you realize, as you walk through the wrong door into exactly the right place.
All at once you are overwhelmed by the giant fucking mess covering the room. Art supplies and books are stashed in the corners, occasionally glitching halfway into the walls. Ink stains are smeared and spattered over everything, half-cleaned. The carpet is pitch black, but effort has obviously been put in to sanitize everything else— unsuccessfully, but you can appreciate it nonetheless.
Despite all the chaos, your eyes are drawn to the center of the room. Papers in various states of disarray are scattered around a figure hunched over a laptop. You think you know that music.
You think you know what they're doing.
They are so focused that they don't acknowledge you.
Intrusion unnoticed, you take some more time to adjust to the cluttered surroundings. Posters are tacked to the wall, colorful cartoon characters littering each one. Some are recognizable. Most aren't.
You find yourself fixated on one. You know this comic.
"Do you like that poster?"
Their voice crackles like radio static. They're smiling at you. You never even saw them move.
"That's my favorite. Can you tell?"
Upon further inspection, every poster in the room is the same. You must have imagined there being a difference.
They gesture to their shirt. Underneath all the inky grime, you see that the image is the same as the posters. "All these things, they keep me sane. I could never live without them." Out of the corner of your eye, you could swear you saw a different cartoon on the poster right beside you. There's no poster when you look.
"I could never leave them behind. They coexist, you know? In my brain. Always so hungry for my attention. We're playing the same game right now, so I hope you can relate." Oh. They're changing them. They keep changing them so fast you almost feel nauseous.
You sit down, suddenly dizzy. They don't seem to notice your discomfort.
Turning their body, the figure points to the poster you were looking at. You don't look back. Your eyes follow a drop of black ink as it lands on the void where a carpet ought to be.
"That's my all time favorite. It has such a rich, winding story. So many characters. So much fanlore."
You don't care. How is this relevant? You need to get back to exploring. The way that ilk keeps dripping from their hands is unsettling you and you don't even know why.
"It's just as relevant as anything!" They insist. "Without that comic I would have never found my latest, greatest obsession. Without it... I wouldn't be who I am. You can see it, right?"
They look at you. Their eyes are pure television static, but through the haze you see question marks that gaze into your soul, then down at their hands. "It's contagious, you know.
"You can't be scared now. You can't. It's all over you, too. Before you even walked in, so don't go blaming me for it."
Your alarm rises as they tilt the laptop towards you. First you notice the keyboard, completely covered in black ooze— What's on the screen is much more eye-catching. It's you. Not your face or your name, but every thought you have plays out on the screen. You just read that line as you thought it, and shifted nervously in your seat.
It's not even generating as you act. It's like it knows what you will do before you do it.

The figure clears its throat, and the static goes away. Hearing them speak clearly to you startles you out of your spiraling for now.
"Did I alone make this? Of course not."
You didn't ask, but you would have liked to if you could only have read that you did.
"I can't pull ideas out of thin air, silly! You made this. We made this. It changed the moment you walked into this room. Do you get it?"
You don't get it. You don't get anything. You thought you did until just now.
"You found me because you were looking. You were looking because you caught it. You are already covered in it."
You can't see the ink but you know it's there on your hands too. You didn't know that until you read it. But since you read it, it must be true, right?
"No, no, no. I mean, I guess that's one way to deal with it. Actually, I won't tell you how to live with it now. You've been doing just fine. Still, you can take most things with a grain of salt. You can make your own salt, even. It's all up to you, really. That's why I don't want a cure."
God, they talk a lot. You can't tell if they make perfect sense or no sense at all. The room is spinning. They giggle at the G force.
"Just know that you're somewhat in control! I mean, yeah, crazy wild shit is gonna happen to you the more you keep spreading it around and bumping into people like me, but that's the fun of it! Don't you see? It doesn't have to be a sickness. It can be a plague. A wonderful, elaborate plague of winding roads and learning new things. Do you understand?"
You don't. You do. You don't. You need to get out of this room. Your clothes are wet with invisible ink. The figure reaches out to grab your shoulder with a sudden excited zeal.
"Spread it! Be it! Live as a contagion, smear it all over everything you love. Maybe if you manage to clean it off for guests and special occasions you might avoid total obsession."
You'll spread it. What other choice do you have? You've been nothing but disoriented from the moment you stepped foot into this room. You need to get out.
You stand up to find yourself waist deep in ooze. The figure smiles at you from the surface.
"Ooh. Looks like you can go deeper than me. Come back and give me a hand sometime, eh?"
You watch their fingers type something. Yes, you say, of course, you say. They beam at you like a parent showing off their walletful of family photos.
"Oh, and don't worry," The static crackle returns to their voice as they turn back to the laptop. Staring.
"I'm just as confused as you are. Maybe more."
You dive into the inky depths and keep going. You have to keep going.
You have to spread.

Please Look At This Fucked Up Room To The East The Crafter Found
Tumblr media
Isn't it amazing?
Apparently the minecraft wiki had a procedural ad to Zampanio in it, which lead to my branch and the newest Unmarked, the Crafter of Zampanio, has been live blogging East for a while now and found THIS room which... I can only assume is Rage + Eye + ???????????????????????????? (what fucks with contrast???). It's amazing how much of my own mazes I've never seen and I love when people live blog so I can see more of them.

i forgot that "putting a post under specific tags" leads to "people looking at the specific tags will see your post". so uh, hi! im not great at writing or talking, but i hope those of you who followed will enjoy.
(very long ramble under the cut)
anyways, ive been exploring the east branch the past... week? i think? ive been absolutely enthralled by this area. im such a sucker for strange and nonsensical places. exploring the various random rooms feels like travelling in a dream. id love to get out some graph paper sometime and try recording my path like you would in an old-school dungeon crawler. i think itd be very funny seeing just how lost i can get.
the tape recordings in the vents are maybe my favorite part though. its always a joy clicking on a vent and having the brief russian-roulette moment of "will this be of relevance to what im seeing or will this be smash mouths all star?" ive been caught off guard by the louder version many, many times. it never fails to amuse me. i believe ive seen all of the logs, but with how much there is in this branch i wouldnt be surprised to find a new one.
the memories im still not done with. last i checked i believe i was at... 110 out of 294? im excited to find out if its possible to get all of them, and what happens if you do. it is very difficult to accomplish this im realizing, since the counter depletes seemingly at random. this might be an entirely fruitless endeavor, but im nothing if not always down for a good challenge :)
i think the most eyecatching piece of the east branch is the chatlogs between wodin and the intern. when i first read through the entire thing, and i was meant to descend into the coffin, i declined (there was a vent in the room and i wanted to get the popup out of the way to read the transcript) and was then unable to trigger that dialogue popup again... which left me stuck wandering the rooms until i refreshed. whoops. its alright though, just gave me another opportunity to collect some more memories.
on my most recent venture, the coffin was present in the center from the very beginning, and almost immediately after starting to explore, a window popped up with some messages to wodin from the closer. while i did very much enjoy reading the contents, it did take me... around twenty minutes to screenshot them all? it was slightly nauseating trying to scroll down, since it kept shooting me back up to the top of the log whenever i tried to read the bottom-most message :( i did manage to screenshot them all eventually though, so i was able to actually read them all. im still super curious what it mightve been that triggered those changes in that run! i dont think i did anything different, other than play on a friday. maybe that was it.
god, theres so so much more i could say, this might be my favorite branch thus far. despite how much ive seen, i still feel like i havent even come close to seeing it all!
oh whoof. i didnt realize how long this was, ill need to put all of this under a readmore. hm. tl;dr, ive been having a boatload of fun exploring the east branch. if you havent done so yet, i highly suggest venturing into it for yourself. its like exploring a kaleidoscope maze within a dream. 10/10 experience
